Blur or Gorrilaz?

damon might be a hottie but does that stupid "rap" fad work in such a wretched place like "england" which im sure this moron comes from. but that song from blur that was all like WOOHOO sure made me kill kids at school. roast me on a spit. SO who is the better band?

Arrow Core!, Wednesday, 9 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-five years ago)

Hm...is this Geordie Racer's cousin or Neuromancer's brother? I can't decide yet.

Blur, clearly -- for Blur actually have songs I like. Gorillaz don't even have a note I like.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 9 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-five years ago)

ned,did you like that song that went WOOHOO too? cause that ruled

Arrow Core!, Wednesday, 9 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-five years ago)

Remember the Starship Troopers trailer? I loved the way they synchronized the WOOHOOs to the exploding aliens. I was disappointed that the actual movie did not contain the song.

Chris H., Wednesday, 9 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-five years ago)

"Song 2," for so it is called, is shit-on-shingle. Some may disagree.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 9 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-five years ago)

This is the best question ever. "A wretched place like 'england'" - that's godawesome.

So anyhow, definitely Blur. Gorillaz are evil post modern ironists. Blur are also meant to be ironic but at least you can sing along and be happy when you hear Country House or Boys and Girls. Gorillaz, on the other hand, make me want to H-bomb London.

Ally, Wednesday, 9 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-five years ago)

As I say Damon could be among us...so, they are the two most important bands of the last decade. Gorillaz should have been a number one!

james e l, Wednesday, 9 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-five years ago)

I thought there was no more stupid division than Blur v. Oasis. I was wrong.

The Dirty Vicar, Wednesday, 9 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-five years ago)

Oh damnit, that's another important thread I could've started instead of my media one. Taking Sides: Blur or Oasis? Shit. I'm going on the side of Oasis because they smash things.

I hope Damon is among us so he can read all the awful things I say about him. Damon. Pff.

Ally, Wednesday, 9 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-five years ago)

if only we could combine them both into some sort of 'blurillaz'

ethan, Wednesday, 9 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-five years ago)

That would actually be a much better band name than either Blur or Gorillaz.

Ally, Wednesday, 9 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-five years ago)

one month passes...
I think Damon is a jocose man behind the voice of ..........

WENG, Tuesday, 26 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

OH MY GOD!!! Thank you for bringing this thread back into the new answers section - it gives me the explanation of BLURILLAZ, a concept that has been confounding several of us who forgot its origins! THANK YOU!

Ally, Tuesday, 26 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

BLURILLAZ!

DG, Tuesday, 26 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I think I hate them both equally.

flowersdie, Thursday, 28 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

people, accept it. Blur has a really hard time not sounding gay and maybe its just my mainstream brainwashing but with the exception of "song 2" and "cofee and tv" they sound like the fucking Bee-gees on heroin. I have three mp3s from the gorrilaz and one simply cannot define them as a band but as an experiment, hence my conclusion is that this is just damon putting out all of his not gay works. and regarding the anti rap statements, i accept that the rap scene sucks and has sucked for ever and that one can hardly find anything barely hearable, but am i alone in thinking that the genre is artistically promising? without hoes, dough, asses, cars and bank robberies that is.

DUDE, Thursday, 28 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

You must have access to both interesting Bee Gees records and interesting heroin then. Or you're insane.

DG, Thursday, 28 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

BEE GILLAZ!

Sterling Clover, Friday, 29 June 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I think both Gorrilaz and Blur, both have there own unique sound.

Tiger, Tuesday, 3 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I don't really follow either, I listen to what's good, politics aside. From an earlier comment: Oasis sucks, has sucked, and always will suck. From a more recent comment: Rap is definitely not all bad. Go listen to some Rahzel, or maybe a little Jurassic 5 if you need some persuasion.

Dante, Thursday, 5 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Anyone who doesn't think The Cure are the best band in the world are narrow minded fools who's opinion isn't worth squat anyway.

Thorak Spatuler, Wednesday, 11 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i was going to give my opinion here but, to be honest, i'm a narrow minded fool and my opinion isn't worth squat anyway.

gareth, Wednesday, 11 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

HAIR TRANSPLANTILLAZ!

Nicole, Thursday, 12 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Ned? That you??

Josh, Thursday, 12 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

No, it's definitely the lovely Nicole, reacting to gossip about Allbran, who is said to be having plugz, erm, installed on his head as I write.

suzy, Thursday, 12 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Cf. "Cure".

Josh, Thursday, 12 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The truth is that gorillaz doesn't molest me, any ways everybody here will agree with the blur, gorillaz are cool but the blur is UNA CHIMBA.

mauricio gamba, Tuesday, 17 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Mauricio, that is an awesome way to put that: "[x] doesn't molest me." I must remember to use that.

Dan Perry, Tuesday, 17 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The question that you have asked must have been asked in ignorance! If you have ever seen an interview with Blur you would know that they hate being compared with other bands. The reason Blur made it was because they were original, not because they sound like another band. The same goes for the Gorrilaz also, they are making it because they are original. Do you really think Damon would have made another band just to compete with Limp(shit-rock)Bizkit. Blur made extrordinary music that is all it's own. The Gorrilaz have done a great job doing that themselves. So, to compare two bands that came together for the soul-purpose of being different, you are all idiots. Oh, and by the way if any of you own the Gorrilaz album, you would know there are only two songs with "rap."

Brad Campanella, Tuesday, 17 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Hey! good point! I never thought of that, but it makes sense. That the gorrilaz are a way to compete with Bizkit in the whole hip-hop/rock crossover dept. That durn trend-hopping Albern, always chasing after innovators like Korn.

Sterling Clover, Tuesday, 17 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

1) i invented Blurillaz and i can take them away from you if i want.

2) i heard half of the gorillaz album in the record store and it sounded really nice. the del track was murkily like pete rock, if i recall. another was dreamy drone-rock that all you hip folk seem to go mad for normally. possibly interesting side qn., while i understand the brits being tired of damon, him being the publically-accepted bearer of all that is Cool about Music or something, what's with you americans being all uptight? i mean, they're like madness or something. we're not exactly saturated with blur over here. the whole d(a)emonization of them sounds like anglophilia to me. and let it be said that if madness did an album with del and automator i would die.

ethan, Tuesday, 17 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I just think it's funny to pick on Damon Albarn.

(blurillaz)

Josh, Tuesday, 17 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Anglophilia is what it is for sure.

Honour the BLURILLAZ !

Patrick, Wednesday, 18 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

THE GORRILAZ ARE AN ANIMATED FICTOINAL ROCK BAND THEIR SONG "CLINT EASTWOOD" IS CURRENTLY NUMBER ONE REQUEST ON RHODE ISLANDS(WHERE IM FROM) ROCK STATOIN FNX THIER VIDEO IS ON MTV WHILE IM POSTING THIS IM AM WACTHING THAT VIDEO 2-D IS THE LEAD SINGER NOODLE IS ON GAUTIAR MURDOC ON BASS AND RUSSEL ON DRUMS GORRILAZ IS BETTER THEN BLUR.......

TRAPDINABOX, Friday, 20 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i want this guy to come up with the bio for blurillaz.

the tagline: 'EVEN MORE FICTOINAL THAN GORILLAZ'.

ethan, Friday, 20 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

also, note truth-in-typo: the video truly is a WACTHING.

ethan, Friday, 20 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Blurillaz is the best thing ive ever heard in a long time. Blur and Gorillaz are almost equal, its hard to distinguish the true gorillaz sound considering the have only premiered a couple songs. THE BLUR RULES. if you dub over any video of any sort with song 2 it kicks major ass peace -Kit

Kit Smith, Sunday, 22 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The story of Gorillaz is a characteristally messy one.Saturday Boy Stu-Pot,keyboard obsessive and nice kid dullard, is the star employee at Uncle Norm's Organ Emporium, on course to make regional manager. But then comes a Saturday to end all weeks (just like a Sunday, but with shopping). Murdoc, with his nasty bad boy crew, ramraids the shop in a tatty Vauxhall Astra. His plan: to seize the synths and form a chart topping band with the booty. He drives...SMASH!... through the shop window and... SMASH!... into Stu-Pot's head, fracturing his eyeball. Result: 30,000 hours of community service for Murdoc, plus 10 hours every week of caring for the vegetabilised Stu-Pot Soon, Murdoc's rotten driving skills again force life to take a different turn. While attempting a 360 doughnut spin in Nottingham's Tesco carpark, he catapults Stu-Pot through the windscreen and into a kerb. Stu-Pot's other eye is fractured, his mind is revived and he stands a young, black eyed god, with hedgehog hair and a vacant stare. Not only that, but his synth playing takes a serious turn for the weird.Perfect pop material. Stu- Pot is renamed 2D (because he's got two dents in his head). Now Murdoc needs a drummer. Rewind a few years. In New York State, Russel, a middle-class kid, is forced out of his posh private school due to his being possessed by a demon. He lies in a coma for four years, until an elaborate exorcism sets him free. Russel joins Brooklyn High, where he falls in with a group of talented street musicians, rappers and DJs. Hip-Hop saves his soul. For a time. A random drive-by shooting kills all of his friends and as Russel, the lone survivor, lies in a state of shock, the spirits of his chums invade his body, turning Russel's eyes a spooky white and giving him amazing drumming, rapping and general hip-hop skills. His parents move him to England, where they hope he'll have the chance of a quieter life. They hadn't reckoned on Murdoc, who tracks Russel down in a Soho Rap Record Store. Now, all the fledgling group need is a guitarist. They place an ad in the NME. The day the ad is published, a Fed-Ex'd freight container is delivered to their door. Out jumps a small Japanese person, carrying a Les Paul. She jabbers at them incomprehensibly, before launching into a riff to end all riffs, rounding it off with a hi- karate jump. The boys are speechless. Noodle has one word for them. It is Noodle. Gorillaz are born, and signed amidst the mayhem of their very first gig. Such is the way legends are created.

Kit Smith, Sunday, 22 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I dont mean to be a moronic "ooh heres something cool let me stick me head in" but from what I understand Gorrilaz is a fictitional band consisting of the members of the Blur who play the music to the video... I'm kinda confused. Who actually PLAYS the instruments?

Fizi, Monday, 23 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

automator makes the music.

ethan, Monday, 23 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Ethan, now you've unleashed BLURILLAZ on the world you can't take it back.

DG, Monday, 23 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

blurillaz!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ally, Monday, 23 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

regrettably 'grill-shill' seemed to not have as long a shelf life as my OTHER infamous word invention. i guess all i can say is that-

BLURILLAZ!

ethan, Monday, 23 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i find it amazing how this site is all about bashing Gorrilaz; all i can say is that its original and what the fuck do u sing.... SHIT ALL. When all of you come out with a record then talk.... You only see with your eyes, and dont percieve with your mind!!!! BRTISH MUSIC ALL THE WAY!!

Nick ......, Wednesday, 25 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

yeah, thank god the british came along and did that rap thing right. americans were just fucking it up anyway. he's right about everyone bashing gorillaz though, what the fuck?

ethan, Wednesday, 25 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Re: "Clint Eastwood" - I don't think Damon sounds bored enough. He needs to watch a few more Merchant-Ivory flicks to achieve a heightened state of complete ennui. And he's almost SINGING - oh, dear.

17 tracks + "super-group" + rack (rap/rock) merger + "ooo, look - we're CLEVER" gimmick = scarily alluring. If only Dan the Automator weren't involved - I'd feel much better about dismissing it.

David Raposa, Wednesday, 25 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

what the fuck do u sing

Well, I sing on this, this, and this, plus the Christmas CD, the Beethoven's 9th, and the Tour of East Asia CD here, the "Alleluia!" CD listed here, and four self-produced CDs by this ensemble. What do YOU do?

Dan Perry, Wednesday, 25 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i like the 'if you haven't released a better album, you can't dismiss it' argument. which means that if you say that and haven't made any music, you must like EVERYTHING. anyway dave popshots is right, gorillaz is massively alluring.

ethan, Wednesday, 25 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Hey, Ethan - you wanna start a Daver Popshots fan-club? I could use the good press, after the "hot pants" scandal...

David Raposa, Wednesday, 25 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Everyone already knows I'm really Geri Spice anyhow, fuckfaces. I just like saying fuckfaces, sorry.

You know what I just noticed about this question that really amused me? They're all, "im sure this moron comes from [england]", but knew he was Damon. Way to blow your trolling, fuckface.

Ally, Thursday, 26 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

ally, i'd like to take this opportunity to clear up an error that i've noticed you making several times; DAMON does not RAP on 'clint eastwood'. that is DEL. del is a RAPPER. damon sings the CHORUS. thank you, that is all.

ethan, Thursday, 26 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'm well aware of that, ANNOYING GIT. it's just MUCH FUNNIER to say that DAMON is RAPPING because that makes it FUNNY. DAMON singing is NOT FUNNY because THAT'S WHAT HE DOES NORMALLY. thanks.

Ally, Thursday, 26 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

BLATANT LYING, WITH NO SUBSEQUENT COMMENTARY = FUNNY? about as funny as saying that bach wrote 'ode to joy'. because it's obvious bach didn't write that! funny! anyway you beat that 'joke' pretty far into the ground for one that wasn't funny to begin with so i figured it had to be a factual error.

ethan, Thursday, 26 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Damon Albarn sings "...I'm useless..." and you're all complaining. The Gorillaz are very good, BTW (actually one song's good and the other is boring).

Kris, Thursday, 26 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

BLURILLAZ (again)

DG, Thursday, 26 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

oh god, i'm going to hell for this, i know it.

ethan, Thursday, 26 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

You know, "Clint Eastwood" sounds MUCH better away from the video. "Vampire" was ehh. Gee, only FIFTEEN more tracks to listen to. Damn digitial technology crap.

David Raposa, Friday, 27 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Gorillaz = 'Springtime for Hitler'!

billboardillaz!

gareth, Sunday, 29 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

first off, you can't compare two bands with totally diferent sounds. remember apples and oranges? my point exaclty. if you don't know the name of the WOOHOO song, you're an idiot for calling it the WOOHOO song. and, if you don' know the name of the song, the band can't be all that great for you to not pay attention to the song titles. in conclusion, most of you are idiots (not all of you, mind you). personally, i like BOTH blur and gorrilaz. blur has got great metal influences, gorrilaz has nice, laid-back vibes, and the 'rap' fad isn't a fad. gorrilaz is the first band i've heard that is main-stream popular with rap that isn't about bling-bling and ice and bentleys and raping hoes with nine's, busting a cap yo ass. thank you for your time.

anarchy, Sunday, 29 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Mainstream rap isn't about raping hoes: it's about DATING hoes.

rebecca, Monday, 30 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

allright folks:

first of all: please don´t write any more stupid versions of blurillaz, that´s allready the best answer ever and it will be.....shouldn´t it actually be called bluRRilaz (goRRilaz) anyway...ethan(july 23): it´s not the automator who makes the rest of the music it´s other members of different bands(a list of names will follow in my next message) I will in future ignore all this morones squating... they will definitley not answer the question of which band is better. Actualy they are different bands!!! Kit Smith(July22): thank you for the nice story bout the beginning of gorrilaz.

In fact I like both bands equal. I love their music...excepted the rap parts ... thats not a generall disagree with rap!!!!!!

the best answer to a stupid comment was gareth(july11) to Thorak Spatuler(july11)!!!!! awesome I like ally´s comments too (their too much to date them)

nevertheless bless the blurrilaz and I realy don´t hope geri halliwell is in here. she´s even worth to mention here.

European music rules!!!!

Ally, Thursday, 2 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Did You Know That Ice Cube was the rapper singing on "Clint Eastwood"? Oh Yeah that woohoo song by blur is called "Song No.5"

TRAPDINABOX, Saturday, 4 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I don't mean to imply stupidity on any of you... but don't you get it? Cartoons were NOT made because they're fictional. They're made because Hampsters can't act! The creator of 'Tank Girl' (I LOVE Tank Girl) didn't create the animation for the 'band'... his Hampster did, just like his Hampster created Tank Girl. I'm warning you now... the Hampsters are going to take over the world... actually, there are two other powers standing in their way; toddlers (BeWaRe_UY7!!), and Martha Stewart and her army of Chimpanze monsters. So next time you look your Hampster in the eye... just IMAGINE... all that animation thoughts reeling through it's micro-brain. Just THINK about it.

Boompas! You have been blessed!

lewis, Tuesday, 14 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

look, blur have been a very sucessful group in britain since 1990, they have relesed 22 singles of what some would say pure musical brillance. they were the inventers of brit pop blar blar blar. damon has set off in a new direction and started up a group called the gorillaz, ok these are a sideline for him to keep him occupied and making lots of additional music whilst blur are not in the studio. Gorillaz have had two singles released which are again of a high standard, and things only look to get better for them. it is stupid to try and even compaire these two groups the one thing they have in common is the both have the sam front man Damon Albarn aka d-2. so come on guys and girls stop squabeling over a musical idol!!!!!!!!!! any responces please title jamie.

I don't know who the divine Elsie is, but I'm sure if I did I'd be aware that she wouldn't want you to have a terrible, terrible accident. Especially as you're involving people you don't know in this bout of hoping people don't have accidents.

Am I the only person who thinks that "19/2000" is a FAR SUPERIOR song to "Clint Eastwood"?

Dan Perry, Monday, 10 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Dan - No you're not, even though 'tis undoubtedly not a very good record, sounds like Albarn has remembered he can write a good pop song if he needs to. Shame he couldn't do it with Blur again, then.

Bill, Monday, 10 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I think "19/2000" is FAR INFERIOR to "Clint Eastwood". And "CE" is already rather dreadful, but we've covered that.

Mitch Lastnamewithheld, Monday, 10 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'm with you, Mitch. 19/2000 is far worse. It's by far the worst single of the year, possibly the worst song of the last 20 years. But I know Damon Albarn is capable of worse. I have a theory that he is on an quest to write the WORST SONG EVER. Look at the pattern of his singles:

No Distance Left To Run (really really really bad) Music Is My Radar (really fucking dreadful) Clint Eastwood (ear-bleedingly horrendous) 19/2000 (get the cool shoe-shine? the lyrics are better than the music, but only because the music is SO UTTERLY SHIT)

Judging by this steady progress, Damon will probably have written the WORST SONG EVER by next year.

EdwardO, Tuesday, 11 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

good music from blur...maybe gorrilaz....I just like the video clips..they play like blur

hafxal, Thursday, 13 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

"Judging by this steady progress, Damon will probably have written the WORST SONG EVER by next year"
Too late! Starsailor have beaten him to it. I mean, have you heard 'Alcoholic'?

DG, Monday, 17 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

As bad as Starsailor are, Damon Albarn is some kind of anti-genius, not just incompetent, but possessing the magic gift of being supremely atrocious. Which is sad because I like early Blur. Still, Starsailor are the sort of band that only whipped-up wankshafts who spontaneously ejaculate when any English art-student tosser strums a guitar (cf Coldplay) will ever (pretend to) like them, so nobody outside the UK has to endure them. Gorillaz however are insidious. 19/2000 is Number 1 in New Zealand... poor NZ..

EdwardO, Sunday, 23 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

"whipped-up wankshafts"
This is brilliant.

"Blurlay" or "Blurlae", I think.

You know, the counterpart to Blurillaz is... GOR.

Dan Perry, Thursday, 4 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Okay...first off....how can you even think of comparing Blur and Gorillaz? They're both completely opposites. Just because they both have Damon in them. Blur has been around for over 10 years. And is the best band around. Gorillaz has one single...oh wait...sorry, two. Sure, they're good. but there is no basis on comparing the two. Plus, it's not even like Blur is over with or anything. BLUR WILL ALWAYS RULE

ethan wrote: "interesting side qn., while i understand the brits being tired of damon, him being the publically-accepted bearer of all that is Cool about Music or something, what's with you americans being all uptight? i mean, they're like madness or something. we're not exactly saturated with blur over here. the whole d(a)emonization of them sounds like anglophilia to me. and let it be said that if madness did an album with del and automator i would die."

off-topic side question to your (amusingly self- appointed 'interesting') side question: didn't Tricky do a cover of "Ghost Town" with Terry Hall of the Specials? It was on a single somewhere. I sought for that mp3 for quite a while, never found it. If anyone hear has heard it, let me know if it's worthwhile.

I was waiting for my girl at some hip clothing store in Iceland last spring when I first saw the Blurillaz video -- on a massive, wall- spanning screen. good video. They were piping in some crap British R&B, so I couldn't hear the music, and not knowing the artist behind the video tormented me for months ... I think I eventually saw it on MTV.

Max Headroom strikes me as the first 'animated' fictional TV corporate avatar ... though the whole idea also makes me think of William Gibson's "Idoru" ...

Gorillaz is an experimental band, I think of it as 13.5 (if you have to ask what 13 is then please leave) It is Damon + co experimenting with something new, not all of it works but at least it is trying something different, it isn't stagnating in one style. I believe they are going in the same direction as the Beatles, not in style or content, but in different styles, pushing new bounds, trying new things, without inovation we may as well be dead.

Geezus, not that anyone gives a fuxor about awards shows or gorillaz- hatin' anymore, but watching the MTVE awards and seeing a clip of albarn talking about injecting some intelligence into this mainstream culture 'we have to put up with' while 'get the cool shoeshine!' plays in the background makes me see red. What are they doing in the company of "Romeo"? And then a snarkily bemused albarn takes home best 'dance' act! I hate awards shows. I might just be warming to "can't get you outta my head", though. And there were a *lot* of girls on stage for 'Girls,Girls,Girls".

If any of you were smart enough to look on the booklet thingie in their album the rapper or Murdoc is Del Tha Funkee Homosapien. Neat huh? well he is the cousin of ice cube and he doesnt rap aboput violence and hoes and stuff. he raps about public transportation and other things. some of his raps are pretty cool and funny. you can see more info on cdnow.com but i suggest downloading some of his songs like if you must. Dan the automator does the song with him ItS HILARIOUS. i have to say that the rock the house video is REALLY MESSED UP. I like the 19-2000 video. Play the simulation on their webpage! their album is the best 16 bucks i spent.

OFF COURSE BLUR!!!!!!!!!! gorillaz is shite!!!!!!!!!!!!!! How can you prefer an animated band who's concerts are behind the curtains and who's music is crappy, shit-eating, son of tricky dicky rap. Shame on you Damon........you were a fine lad on blur. Also I heard they're going to release a colaboration with slim shitty and D-12. That's awful. Blur's the best. Songs like this is a low, beetlebum, on your own, the universal, the swamp song are BETTER than any gorillaz song like 19-2000. What a fucking crap, sounds like kindergarden music. I miss Graham's guitar, Alex's bass, David's drums............and Damon's natural way of behaving. I'm waiting for their next album. Well this is for Gorillaz fans: If you like so much animated things why don't you go to hell and wait for the Sezame Street or Teletubbies soundtrack to enjoy. In the emantime let us, the fine ear, enjoy good music!!!!! Long live BLUR.

Damon's natural way of behaving

'Namely like a headless chicken that still thinks its head is attached to its body?'

Ned, that is sheer genius.

dave q, Saturday, 29 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I think what Simon Price said about them in the 'Independent' year- end round-up was a bit much. 'Casual racism'!?

I think the "casual racism" thing is all down to the fact that they thought "Um, we have a Japanese character, what shall we call him? How about NOODLES!"

(I'm not sure if I quite agree with Mr Price here but he did tip Riviera for next year so I feel like I've got to defend him, even if he is only seeking vindication for ROMO)

jamesmichaelward, Sunday, 30 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Ned, that is sheer genius.

One tries. Meanwhile, Riviera then. I'm waiting for a band to call itself Miami Vice or Eldorado.

Ned Raggett, Sunday, 30 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Well I think that both bands are excellent, just in different ways. Gorillaz has a sound that is really creative and different which I find pleasing to the ear. Blur has amazing lyrics and has this really cool sound which I even begin to describe. Even though the groups are clearly very different they both contribute much to the musical world. I would highly recomend both groups to anyone who would want something to listen to in the car , dance to, or just sit and listen to.

I think the reason people hate Blur is because Damon is an unsalvageable prick. Shame he's in such a great band.

dog latin (dog latin), Monday, 3 January 2005 09:18 (twenty-one years ago)

There was a point when I cared about these bands. That point, i'm afraid, has passed us. That said, I'd sooner throw my Gorillaz discs on the fire than my Blur one, if only because I spent some much goddamn, inexplicable time hunting down those Blur CD singles.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 3 January 2005 14:28 (twenty-one years ago)

my Blur ONES, I should say. I still play their stuff on occaission. Can't remember the last time I played the Gorillaz discs.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 3 January 2005 14:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Alex I find it hard to imagine you as a fan of either of these bands for some reason.

I think Blur will sadly be remembered for their more horrible moments (Song 2, Girls & Boys, Parklife) than their better (This Is A Low, Coffee & TV, Chemical World, On Your Own, Best Days etc). God I want to hear some stuff of theirs RIGHT NOW!

dog latin (dog latin), Monday, 3 January 2005 14:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Alex I find it hard to imagine you as a fan of either of these bands for some reason.

That's because you fail to heed Flavor Flav's advice, and you BELIEVE THE HYPE!

I was a huge Blur fan for a while, hunting down their most elusive tracks by hook or by crook (this was pre-internet). However, unlike their more ardent supporters, I tend to prefer their earlier stuff (the rot set in circa Parklife). I'd sooner play Leisure than any of their last three albums.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 3 January 2005 14:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Well see Leisure was a fine album but to me it was only mildly better than any of the other Baggy/Indie Rock/Shoegaze stuff that was coming out at the time. It's good but it's not exactly original whereas by "Modern Life" they'd become themselves (songs about cups of tea and eccentric Englishmen and hating America; experimenting with different musical styles etc). I think Parklife will always be my favourite as it was my first "proper" rock album, first CD and my first foray into ahem-alternative music.

dog latin (dog latin), Monday, 3 January 2005 15:33 (twenty-one years ago)

the new gorillaz album was completed in Dec, produced by Dangermouse, it'll be out next year.

chaki in charge (chaki), Monday, 3 January 2005 18:10 (twenty-one years ago)

The choice is obvious: Blur. Although they have ceased to be relevant for me for about 3 years. Probably wouldn't be so bad if they packed it in about now, but then I hear rumours Graham might come back, so perhaps I should be fair and not pass judgement just yet. Not that I necessarily believe he could single-handedly pull them out of a rut, but I'm not sure.

Alex OTM re: singles

Some of the best b-sides ever were by Blur, IMHO. "I'm Fine", "Mace", "Day Upon Day", "Mr. Briggs"...

Although I too would not have expected this sort of thing from Alex. Well, thirty lashes on the gallows for me, I suppose.

The three good things Damon Albarn ever managed to do:

1) played keyboard on some Elastica tunes (Norman Balda and Dan Abnormal)

2) lost his hair (in 1992 he was sporting pudding-bowl haircut)

3)wrote some decent tunes (from Parklife, and Blur)

dan abnormal was a (very good) blur song, off the (very good) great escape. his hair is practically irrelevant. by 'decent tunes' you clearly mean 'six very very good albums and one good one'.

my own bias aside, though, the amount of BS on this thread, mostly from americans who'd only heard about 3 blur songs (including song 2, which although a brilliantly successful pop song isn't very representative musically of what blur were capable), is astonishing.

And now Gorillaz is over, and it's all about the Blur and the band that has no actual name, supposedly.
