Dusted trades a hair of grit f/thicker dronescapes and a dark sense of melody that mines the rapture-into-dread of fading LSD. worth a listen:

xxp Gang of Four re-recorded the whole of "Entertainment!", for reasons best known to themselves. Is that the kind of thing you were thinking of?

Squeeze re-recorded their own songs recently, as close to the originals as possible, so they could make more money licensing them for ads/movies than they would off the original masters. i think a few other acts have done that. and lots of bands have done 'self-covers' albums.

The UK Subs did that about 10 years ago but I think the re-recordings came out on the same label that reissued all their early albums, so I don't think it was to do with licensing issues. Probably just to use up another letter of the alphabet without writing any new songs.

did you really piece together a quasi-weird love playlist? I appreciate the effort but I'd be derelict if I didn't point out that weird love wasn't a compilation but the band rerecording a set of their own songs. has anybody ever done this? I mean a whole album's worth.

yeah, I had already sifted extensively through these songs f/the track nominations, and b/c I liked a fair chunk of them, I decided to assemble an ersatz version of Weird Love. didn't realize that the rec was a re-recording, but w/e, Spotify doesn't have Weird Love. better than nothing, but if you think it's a terrible misrepresentation, I'll remove it.

nah no big deal, tho the weird love versions are more rocked out than the originals, which are more swampy than hot rod. I'll add it to my youtube list.

ha, I didn't even think of the licensing angle, makes sense. afaik weird love was the only scientists record to get a US release, the rest were imports.

their follow-up, the human jukebox, went in a birthday party direction, and iirc their aussie label refused to release it

yeah, ST share Ginn's love of hard rock bent into alien shapes, and Jack Brewer is an effective non-singer like Biafra or Mackaye, but also grates f/the same reason. I always thought ST were so much more interesting than the Meat Puppets, but they unfortunately never had the benefit of a celebrity champion.

I don't think the Meat Puppets exactly got rich/ got re-evaluated cos Nirvana covered a few of their songs.

maybe they're not rich, but whoever has songwriting credits on that nirvana unplugged album has been cashing some checks I can assure you

I rate pagan icons > surviving you always, but ST fans seem to gravitate towards the latter. sounds a little too much like discount black flag for my taste, and contains an inexplicable cover of "peace frog". pagan icons really doesn't sound like anything or anyone before or since except maybe a dentist's drill, as though a band of pleasure-hating marxist punks from eastern europe got transported to sunny so cal and were left to bake in the sun too long.

yeah i don't remember if i've ever seen any exact figures or quotes but i'm quite sure that Curt Kirkwood made better money having 3 songs on a 7x platinum album than the whole MPs discography, even if that's not "rich" per se. also kids definitely started buying their albums because of that, i was one of 'em.

sort of? my pre-teen musical evolution was glam->prog->metal, then I hit the punk and weird stuff that dominates my tastes. oddly enough, I have a very distinct memory at age 13 of navigating the snowy sidewalks of red bank NJ to purchase the first album in the poll, defenders of the faith, on its release date. that was the last metal album I remember being OMG super-psyched about. since then I've paid attention to metal with some residual fondness. the metallica/anthrax/megadeth period left me cold, with the blinding exception of reign in blood. definitely dug the spazzed out death metal of the 90s. tho most current metal doesn't do much for me, some of my favorite albums are metal, and there are about 6-8 metal albums on my ballot (depending on how broad yr definition of metal is).

Popping out of lurk-mode to say that calling Saccharine Trust ca. Surviving You Always "discount Black Flag" is well and truly bizarre. The two bands do overlap stylistically in some ways, but in every one of those areas, ST wins. ESPECIALLY when it comes to incorporating out-jazz weirdness into punk rock. I love a lot of Greg Ginn's playing, but he can't compete with Joe Baiza on that front.

Also, that cover of "Peace Frog" is great!

technically it was a reissue of material they released in the 70s, but since the widowspeak release contains a controversial remix by jim thirwell I guess that counts. the original mixes were eventually reissued sometime in the oughties?

yeah, we had this discussion during the nomination period re: the Avengers and Pagans. if a compilation was released in the eighties, contained out-of-print material, and was considered a definitive rec in and of itself, then it was allowed in the poll (see also: Auto-Da-Fe).

in retrospect, there's actually a strong case to be made for Black Flag's The First Four Years, even though the material was still available. it's definitely considered a classic.

just to expand on a brief comment above, this guys are really fantastic. this collects their first 4 singles (I had the cassette version titled 4 from the bottom), but the best career overview is '91's music for insect minds, a goliath cornucopia of fleet-footed fried-out rock riffage. I characterized them at the time as the sound of "soused going-nowhere manhood", akin to bands like the flesheaters and mule, but affinities with their amphetamine reptile brethren were based more on sensibilities than ability - tom hazelmyer was one of the best guitarists of the era, and his rhythm section's precog-like propensity for following his trail of stinking wah lava is a wonder to behold. similar to how 70s punk bands amped up 50s rock n roll, halo of flies sound like folks who internalized hendrix experience dynamics and then drug them through the dirt. it took me a while to fully appreciate them, as the tightly-compressed sonic forward motion can sound like a big mess at first draught. these guys would have been huge except haze stinks as a singer, and their commitment to lo-fi recording equals paper-thin sound. I guess if you're gonna sample one tune from this, go with "thoughts in a booth".

Pretty damn sure those big 90s albums put people off Soul Asylum and they wont even check out the good 80s stuff which is a shame as this is a classic.

there were several iterations of the flesheaters, a minute to pray a second to die featured the best lineup with dave alvin, john doe, dj bonebrake, steve berlin. desjardins' vocals can be an acquired taste but the entire b-side is killer. if you can't get down with "cyrano de berger's back" rock n roll just ain't for you kid. "divine horsemen" is primitive tribal ass-shake taken to epic lengths, and heights.

drugs a money, I can't imagine you not liking halo of flies. "headburn" is prolly their most accomplished recording sound-wise, though "tired & cold" sums up their appeal pretty handily.

It's amazing that F/i has been putting out all that crazy space-rock psych since the 80s without many of us noticing. I didn't dig into them until last year, so nothing has been ingrained enough to vote for, but glad to see 'em appear. I found my list, looks like Comsat Angels' Sleep No More was my #8.

Violet Art Of Improvisation stands as the man’s most experimental release. This long passage through the (deranged) mind of Paul Chain starts with the monstrously long “Tetri Teschi In Luce Viola”, or when translated into English “Sad Skulls in Violet Light”. As one would expect from the title, there is a large amount of psychedelic influence in that particular track. It centers solely around the same rhythm that is repeated on guitar and drum every five seconds. Being a thirty one minute track, this must be excruciatingly boring, right? Not at all. Plenty of keyboards, synthesizers, electronic sounds, and lively guitar riffs sprinkle this half hour experimentation. It takes away focus from the rhythm. The rest of the album is very much the same way, with different styles thrown in.

Awesome album from the genius that is Paul Chain. Note that this is not one of his doom metal releases.

aw man, you should definitely hunt down their last album, release. closest to the firewater sensibility and it was on interscope so copies aren't too hard to come by (nb: I have not searched for this album in years but supply def outstripped demand). the early records are great but heavily foetus/swans damaged affairs. then they entered a mid-career phase of growing pains as their experimental and pop instincts acted out some neurotic battle. release is the spoils of that war. if you dig that, working your way backwards is a sensible approach.

White Noise is probably the furthest a casual observer should go with Cop Shoot Cop. Beyond that it does descend into Swans/Foetus madness. David Ouimet was in the live Foetus band around this point - he's on Male, certainly.

Yeah I like consumer revolt, but it is def not for everyone. But white noise is awesome - judas/Jesus is all time great.
