Nominations for a 70s 'Anti-Rolling Stone Canon ' style Albums Poll

Balls suggested a 70s equivalent of the surprisingly successful The ILM 1980s Anti-Rolling Stone Canon (FREE PUSSY RIOT) Rock Poll Results - ALBUMS! Top 20! ends today poll and there was a lot of support for it on the thread and on twitter so lets try it.

We need to work out what is allowed in the poll. Anything borderline has to have a good reason for being included 'i want to vote for it' just isn't enough.
Im inclined to not allow Springsteen/Talking Heads/Blondie type stuff but lets see what you all say.
If we cant agree I obviously have final say. But we do want to do a different type of poll and the 80s one worked amazingly well.

a 70s poll leaving out parliament,Sly stone, stevie wonder, marvin ,james brown, chic etc pains me but we can still have Funkadelic, Mandrill and other like-minded bands.

*IF* we do a tracks poll, then I will need at least one volunteer to help take charge of the thread keeping it bumped, keeping the nominations in order and of course right of veto/decision making. (trolls need not apply)

So what do you all think?

oh and go vote in this poll ! I'VE GOT THE POWER! This is the 1990s ELECTRONIC TRACKS AND ALBUMS voting thread! - Deadline on Monday, October 8th, at 12PM (GMT)

Algerian Goalkeeper, Friday, 5 October 2012 11:31 (twelve years ago)

Oh and I will do the 90s equivalent either after this or after EOY polls, I promise.

Algerian Goalkeeper, Friday, 5 October 2012 11:32 (twelve years ago)

Could you bold all nominations please. like the following

Funkadelic - Standing On The Verge Of Getting It On
Mandrill - Mandrill Is

It's unlimited but the more you nominate in one post the easier it is for us. But it doesn't really matter too much but it would help for your initial nominations. Obviously things do come to you later on.

Algerian Goalkeeper, Friday, 5 October 2012 11:43 (twelve years ago)

I know there's going to be obvious classics like led zep, sabbath, television, sex pistols etc but lets try nominate weirder/noisy stuff like we did in the 80s poll

Algerian Goalkeeper, Friday, 5 October 2012 11:49 (twelve years ago)

where's the multitude of blues rock and country rock stuff going to fall here? like, would some Neil Young albums be heavy enough for the poll and some wouldn't? I feel like as long as there's more electric guitars than acoustics something should have a shot. are the Rolling Stones themselves still on the outs?

some dude, Friday, 5 October 2012 11:50 (twelve years ago)

That is what we need to discuss but yeah the neil young rock albums are in but no eagles! ZZTop,Rush etc are in. As much as i love gram parsons i think he is out.

Algerian Goalkeeper, Friday, 5 October 2012 11:53 (twelve years ago)

Punk is in but not sure about new wave but we need to judge that album by album but probably not much new wave will get in (sorry)

Algerian Goalkeeper, Friday, 5 October 2012 11:55 (twelve years ago)

yeah Eagles definitely don't rock enough. i think Little Feat do, though.

imo the first two Elvis Costello albums rock as hard as anything but i can see the case for him being too new wave.

some dude, Friday, 5 October 2012 11:56 (twelve years ago)

as for krautrock - guitar albums by Can, amon duul ii are in but no cluster or tangerine dream

Algerian Goalkeeper, Friday, 5 October 2012 11:59 (twelve years ago)

The Stooges - Fun House

fuck the rest imo

DJ Mooncup (NickB), Friday, 5 October 2012 11:59 (twelve years ago)

I guess 1st 2 Kraftwerk are allowed but not the well known stuff.

xp

I know what you mean by elvis c but i think he has to e left out along with talking heads/blondie. its not a matter of taste, i love the last 2 and like early elvis c,but they just dont fit. neither do the police

Algerian Goalkeeper, Friday, 5 October 2012 12:00 (twelve years ago)

yeah, i understand that. can i put a little Frampton Comes Alive up in this bitch?

some dude, Friday, 5 October 2012 12:05 (twelve years ago)

Can - Tago Mago
Can - Ege Bamyasi

comedy is unnatural and abhorrent (Scik Mouthy), Friday, 5 October 2012 12:05 (twelve years ago)

I think frampton qualifies as hard rock so yeah why not. We have to remember how "heavy" a band was at the time and not judge it by how they sound now.
The Heart albums are more folky arent they? im not sure about them before someone asks.

Algerian Goalkeeper, Friday, 5 October 2012 12:08 (twelve years ago)

Crossing the Red Sea with the Adverts - The Adverts

Damo Suzuki's Parrot, Friday, 5 October 2012 12:12 (twelve years ago)

as much as i dislike yes and elp they are eligible. I think a compromise like u2/rem in 80s poll would be Pink Floyd - Animals would be ok but not the others? its a difficult one.

Animals does rock so its def in

Algerian Goalkeeper, Friday, 5 October 2012 12:18 (twelve years ago)

xps to AG: Try using the search function to search for any band name or album title in the wake of these types of polls. I have to scroll through pages and pages of each time you decide to update the nominations list. It would be good housekeeping for pollstarters to go back and delete everything except maybe only the last noms list. It's really annoying when searching for posts of substance about musical acts.

how's life, Friday, 5 October 2012 13:20 (twelve years ago)

I've brought this up on mod request board once and I think one of the mods even went back and deleted a bunch of the horrible noms list from a thread or two (God bless you, sir or ma'am), but I don't know if the people running these polls realize it.

how's life, Friday, 5 October 2012 13:22 (twelve years ago)

well im not a mod so cant do that

Algerian Goalkeeper, Friday, 5 October 2012 13:24 (twelve years ago)

ok it happened someone nominated rolling stones.
i assume most say no rolling stones in the poll?

Algerian Goalkeeper, Friday, 5 October 2012 13:25 (twelve years ago)

maybe we go for the one album only compromise?

Algerian Goalkeeper, Friday, 5 October 2012 13:31 (twelve years ago)

Also anyone volunteering to help with a tracks poll or does noone want a tracks poll?

Algerian Goalkeeper, Friday, 5 October 2012 13:32 (twelve years ago)

the endless reposts of nominee lists are ridiculous. AG posted the results of the OTHER 80s poll three times during the rollout for his own poll.

some dude, Friday, 5 October 2012 13:33 (twelve years ago)

well im not a mod so cant do that

Yeah, but you could take some responsibility for your shit and submit a humble mod request for someone to go back and delete posts that may repeat themselves too many times.

how's life, Friday, 5 October 2012 13:35 (twelve years ago)

seems daft to exclude exile on main st tbh

space dokken (Edward III), Friday, 5 October 2012 13:36 (twelve years ago)

yeah if that's not a rock album I don;t know what is.

Do the noms lists really mess up searching? I always search on thread titles or use Google...

This is more an issue with every poll thread ever than just some crazy thing that AG does. But anyway, if we maintain a Google Spreadsheet there shouldn't be any need to post nomination lists in the thread.

some dude, Friday, 5 October 2012 13:56 (twelve years ago)

so basically are we just using chuck eddy's definition of metal here?

da croupier, Friday, 5 October 2012 13:59 (twelve years ago)

if the issue is the Stones/ Floyd will dominate, I think the presence of Bowie/ Roxy/ Sabbath/ Zeppelin etc. etc. will ensure that no band could possibly dominate. let 'em in I say!

Van der Graaf Generator – Godbluff
Van der Graaf Generator – Still Life
Peter Hammill – Over

my father will guide me up the stairs to bed (anagram), Friday, 5 October 2012 14:02 (twelve years ago)

from the intro to stairway to hell:

"Basically, I include all (decent) loud-guitar squashing-ears-like-bugs brain-damamge that could conceivably (theoretically) appeal to a heavy metal audience, not just observers-of-arbitrary-dress-code already accepted by said crowd. Everybody else's definition changes annually, I decided, so the only sensible way to handle the predicament was to make eligible for Stairway To Hell all extant wax that would've been considered metal at any time in HM's elongated life span, whether said wax was considered metal at the time of releae or not. The only exception was the Rolling stones, who cannot be heavy metal because, well, they're the Rolling Stones. And so are the Clash."

some dude, Friday, 5 October 2012 14:06 (twelve years ago)

Gotta admit that so far this poll makes less intuitive sense to me than the 80s poll. I love Television but they were mostly basically jangle-rock with jams, not very heavy or noisy. In fact, I've always seen them as a precursor to REM and jangly indie. Have trouble seeing the rationale for including them but not Talking Heads or Blondie. Springsteen and the Stones probably rocked harder (although I like Television more than 70s Heads, Blondie, or Springsteen.) I'd say similar things about Loaded (except that I've never liked it much): it's a pretty mellow folk-rock-ish record imo. Why is there even a question about the Stones?

Yes is another one of my all-time favourite bands but much of what they did is pretty light/soft. Why is Pink Floyd borderline if Yes and ELP are in? Does Genesis count? Or would Nursery Cryme count but not The Lamb? Van der Graaf Generator? I get that King Crimson, Rush, and Queen should fit. Tull and Heep too.

these arent artist polls k3vin

I thought genre polls were covered in that thread too?

many xposts

'Anti-Rolling Stones Cannon' (Pillbox), Friday, 5 October 2012 14:29 (twelve years ago)

I don't think it's a big deal about noms - even if blondie is nominated they're likely to suffer the fate the pretenders did in the 80s poll

television's an interesting one, but they are way more guitar-focused than most of the folks they influenced, they were pretty clearly a rock band

I love fahey but don't see how he fits here

space dokken (Edward III), Friday, 5 October 2012 14:33 (twelve years ago)

what held together the last poll was extremity - the non-rock bands were pursuing some sort of extreme vision of wild abandon, it's why einsturzende neubauten or ministry made sense

anyway not everything is going to line up 100%, who cares

AG is just trying to avoid results littered with dylan and randy newman albums

space dokken (Edward III), Friday, 5 October 2012 14:44 (twelve years ago)

yeah i hate when things are "littered" with masterpieces

some dude, Friday, 5 October 2012 14:45 (twelve years ago)

one man's masterpiece is another man's fuck randy newman

space dokken (Edward III), Friday, 5 October 2012 14:47 (twelve years ago)

how's Warren Zevon looking for this? is any lyric-centered solo artist just off limits?

some dude, Friday, 5 October 2012 14:48 (twelve years ago)

One last question! Can you nom albums by bands like Crime and The Electric Eels who never released an album in their lifetime in the 70's but retrospective albums were put together 10-20 years later.

Damo Suzuki's Parrot, Friday, 5 October 2012 14:49 (twelve years ago)

Likewise the Pagans

DJ Mooncup (NickB), Friday, 5 October 2012 14:50 (twelve years ago)

The logic behind the distinctions just doesn't seem as clear to me as it did with the 80s poll, where it made sense right away. It could be me or it could be the poll.

(70s Springsteen does seem more rock to me than 80s Springsteen.)

EveningStar (Sund4r), Friday, 5 October 2012 14:51 (twelve years ago)

I'm guessing this is how Tim felt about the other poll.

EveningStar (Sund4r), Friday, 5 October 2012 14:51 (twelve years ago)

seems fair. static age by the misfits was recorded in '78, finalized for release, and then didn't get put out until '97. it's obv a 70s record tho.

in that case, would this be allowed?

Screamers ‎– In A Better World

stirmonster, Friday, 5 October 2012 14:57 (twelve years ago)

i'm not really gung ho about doing a tracks poll, but if we did that would probably be the best place to represent certain artist ("Adam Raised A Cain" for Springsteen etc.)

Lots of middling art-rock nominated so far... I love a lot of it, but this thread definitely needs more balls-out rock. More when I'm not on my phone's browser...

Clarke B., Friday, 5 October 2012 15:24 (twelve years ago)

I'll nominate some things though, so you know I'm not just trolling:

AC/DC - Jailbreak '74

Joy Division - Unknown Pleasures
Led Zeppelin - Physical Graffiti

Siouxsie and the Banshees - The Scream
Styx - Pieces of Eight
Styx - The Grand Illusion

I'm with sund4r a bit as well on having confusion over the parameters. I think almost no postpunk belongs here, but I can't really articulate why right now.

Clarke B., Friday, 5 October 2012 15:27 (twelve years ago)

Magma - MDK

seconding the VDGG ones. also would like to add H to He there

frogbs, Friday, 5 October 2012 15:29 (twelve years ago)

I wasn't around for the debates over the parameters (imagine in Robert Ashley's voice) of the last poll, but I just sort of assumed that in saying "music that rocks" you were using in a Chuck Eddy sort of sense, with an emphasis on rhythm/rhythmic drive, which is the only way it really makes much sense to me. All the stuff about extremity seems too broad and diffuse. On the other hand, the last poll ended up being so much fun that maybe the lesson is it doesn't matter what the theoretical underpinnings of the poll are. Maybe if "hard" and "heavy" were in the poll title. I don't know. Of course this time around "music that rocks" isn't even in the thread title.

space dokken (Edward III), Friday, 5 October 2012 15:34 (twelve years ago)

Not just any emphasis on rhythm, but an emphasis on rhythm along rock longs, but that could include some disco. Actually toying with suggesting something controversial along those lines.

_Rudipherous_, Friday, 5 October 2012 15:34 (twelve years ago)

if there's no post-punk can we have fela kuti to compensate?

stirmonster, Friday, 5 October 2012 15:36 (twelve years ago)

A Chuck Eddy poll of music that rocks would maybe have a fair amount of disco and country (and country disco), but not so much Krautrock or proto-indie. (Not that I idolize Mr. Eddy, I just find his slant on this actually makes a certain amount of sense to me, or more sense than the alternatives.)

_Rudipherous_, Friday, 5 October 2012 15:36 (twelve years ago)

That's disrespectful to Reich and to rock; ditto Fela's inclusion

Clarke B., Friday, 5 October 2012 17:02 (twelve years ago)

I promise to stop being a grumpy old man and to actually vote in this one, but I do fear this poll's slow descent into cleverness...

Clarke B., Friday, 5 October 2012 17:06 (twelve years ago)

there's lots of stoopidity included too. i will think of some more dumb favourites.

stirmonster, Friday, 5 October 2012 17:12 (twelve years ago)

Umm Guilty. But I think you are taking it too seriously Clarke, and if it is an offensive faux pas it is more out of dumbness than trying to be clever!

Damo Suzuki's Parrot, Friday, 5 October 2012 17:13 (twelve years ago)

i like these attempts to broaden the poll's boundaries to the point of meaningless. maybe the whole thing will be called off, or turned into another 'alternate' poll where nothing that made the first 2 polls is eligible.

I feel like the 'anti-rolling stone' thing is kind of a misnomer - these polls to me have been about 'music that rocks' in a kind of Joe Carducci-via-Chuck Eddy kind of way, in opposition to stuff that doesn't really rock although it might feature guitars or other signifiers of rock music (Rudipherous explained all this better upthread iirc).

Sock Puppets II (Mr Andy M), Friday, 5 October 2012 17:41 (twelve years ago)

Third World War - II

farte blanche (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Friday, 5 October 2012 18:13 (twelve years ago)

alot of miles should totally make the cut but alot of stuff here is rock but nowhere near RAWKS enough imo to fit spirit of 80s poll, carducci-eddy aesthetic good guidepost (though obv chuck eddy hates alot of stuff on 80s poll eg big black, slayer, maiden). my guiding question would be is most of the entire album (not just one or two cuts like after the gold rush) composed of tracks that you could imagine flying down the road in yr t-top firebird screaming 'OMG THIS FUCKING RAWKS'? could you bring it to a friend and go 'dude you like stooges/sabbath/early funkadelic/pere ubu/alice cooper/zz top/boston? you should check this out'? does it rock harder than springsteen? some neil young yes, some neil young no. i love elvis costello but no, blood and chocolate is probably his most rawking album and it would've been out of place between candlemass and skinny puppy. i also suggested loosing anti rolling stone canonicity but heavily restricting the aesthetic parameters. stones imo the only ones i'd admit are sticky fingers, exile, and some girls. the others don't rawk enough or aren't pure enough rawk imo. only bowie i'd admit is man who sold the world, ziggy, and aladdin sane. no dylan qualifies imo. nor any beatles related stuff, even though 'jet' does rawk. there's already been an ilx 70s poll and million other 70s polls elsewhere, this doesn't need to be this. totally trusting ag to make the judgments here and would hope errs on the side of strictness, esp since there is so much to choose from in the 70s. no turds in the punch bowl.

Algerian Goalkeeper, Friday, 5 October 2012 19:35 (twelve years ago)

fwiw would love if some ilxor started a 70s hippie folk & singer songwriter poll. walking dogs just now thought that a 70s tracks poll of artists that belong nowhere near this poll but have a couple of tracks that totally would fit eg 'all the girls love alice' by elton john, maybe doesn't have to be a poll but just a thread, but on that basis those first two eno albums would have like at least 60% of their tracks on there so they totally qualify i think, at least as much as siren for sure

balls, Friday, 5 October 2012 19:38 (twelve years ago)

The weakness is that you widen or contract your claws on what is 'rock' when it suits you. Need more wider minds.

I was serious about the Wilie Colon nomination, but I have to admit, I could make a better case if every track were as driving as Pirana, Timbalero, or Aguanile (or even as acidic as the slower Sonando Despierto), so I give up. (Go listen to it anyway.)

(What would Will Hermes do? Library copy of Love Goes to Buildings on Fire now sitting in my to read pile.)

_Rudipherous_, Friday, 5 October 2012 21:10 (twelve years ago)

(Maybe we should have a pole of 70s music Will Hermes mentions in his book, or that relates to music he mentions.)

_Rudipherous_, Friday, 5 October 2012 21:10 (twelve years ago)

We need to work out what is allowed in the poll. Anything borderline has to have a good reason for being included 'i want to vote for it' just isn't enough.
Im inclined to not allow Springsteen/Talking Heads/Blondie type stuff but lets see what you all say.
If we cant agree I obviously have final say. But we do want to do a different type of poll and the 80s one worked amazingly well.

a 70s poll leaving out parliament,Sly stone, stevie wonder, marvin ,james brown, chic etc pains me but we can still have Funkadelic, Mandrill and other like-minded bands.

poll requires negative votes obv
