this popped up in the last few days and definitely deserves a thread: https://twitter.com/hateindierock
some of my favorite points:
Anti-intellectualism in this country is oppressive. Look at the modern band. Which of them are positing interesting ideas?
Questioning everything in your culture can only help make it better
Blogs like Pitchfork are written by and to children who were told they could be anything they wanted when they grew up
Really frustrating thing is that people think none of this matters, that their culture is just some incidental thing that has no consequence
But almost everyone has their culture mediated by the same three corporations now. That's the beginning of a dystopian sci fi novel
Not being into mediocre gibberish made by people with nothing to say shouldn't sound so radical.
Speaking from the heart is now so easily confused with satire that the moral universe is in danger of collapsing
Publicists and other parasitic ancillary enterprises are basically the only people making money in the so-called music business now
Kickstarter projects are a sad mixture of socialist grovelling and capitalist solipsism
Free culture advocates are fooling themselves
Rating records on a scale of 1 to 10 is for the sexually insecure
Vice magazine's success is predicated on the idea that you aren't very secure in our own identity
Jazz is a dead language because no one wants to address unspeakable feelings that we all have
Pitchfork is staffed by college students that don't know anything about life outside of what they read on the internet
The modern music press is governed by antidepressants and student loan debt
Let's instead discuss the ubiquity of so-called indie rock. It's used in every advertisement now, it's even invaded hip hop culture.
Rock and roll didn't use to pour out of every available media orifice. You had to look for it; when it did appear on TV it was clumsy
But decades of assimilation have created a culture with no real underground. This has happened because of "cross overs"
Twenty years ago, they convinced your band to sign to DGC, now they want you to sell your song so it can go in a Quizno's ad
This is the most insidious epidemic in youth culture today, or maybe tied for first with video games, which no adult should ever play.
thoughts? i'm really excited someone else feels this way.

i'm kinda sympathetic. american pop culture does seem to promise the availability of fame + financial success to anyone, and politically blames failures for inadequacies in competing in the meritocratic market. speaking of adults, tho, an adult understands that this promise is illusory - like the promise that anyone could win the lottery. if you want to play you buy a ticket and hope you're lucky, but when you lose it's nagl to go on twitter and complain about how the lottery industry only gives winning tickets to mediocre game players.
― Mordy, Sunday, 14 October 2012 06:16 (thirteen years ago)
our "youth culture" is a bunch of people buying things to build their personal brands while frantically guzzling entertainment to drown the nagging knowledge that they are no longer citizens, just like the rest of our culture; in the dictionary next to "myopic" is a picture of a person blaming this situation on grizzly bear

"Montreal's a place that's always losing its charm. It's a corrupt city in a corrupt province, where somehow the light rings loudly anyhow. So many crazy plans hatched in spite of, so many minor miracles. The dust of this place is caked into our scalps and beneath our nails – there would be no band if it weren't for this lovely rotten town."

― scott seward, Sunday, 14 October 2012 16:25 (thirteen years ago)
But now we all live in harder times, now a whole lot of bands react to the current heaviness by privileging the party times, like some weird Scientology will-to-power bullshit, hit that hi-hat with a square's fist until we all make it to heaven, until Sunday morning's bringdown. Self-conscious good vibes like love-handles poking through some 22-year-old's American Apparel T-shirt at some joint where you can only dance once you pay a $10 cover charge just to listen to some internet king's iPod.

We're all of us born beneath the weight of piss-poor governance. It's a miracle that so many of us make it through our teens. Politics is for politicians and all our politicians have the whiff of death to them, it's why they wear so much perfume and cologne, it's why they wear brightly coloured scarves and ties, just to distract from the pallor of their skin. So many of us just want to live away from that stench – we stagger towards the light awkwardly, astonished that so many of us are staggering together thusly, amen.

yo, op, if you are the author you should give ilx a shoutout for being capitalist-free haven for restless intellectuals
xp oh, too bad

maybe ppl are craving a more theoretical/critical grappling w/ current music culture and they aren't being satisfied elsewhere
(this is obv my most wishful thinking)

he doesn't have the self-respect to not post reactionary nonsense tweets
― Mordy, Sunday, 14 October 2012 23:01 (thirteen years ago)
"controversial" twitter people used to be safely locked inside record stores and video rental places where they could vent about the falseness of things. but they don't make those places anymore. now the twitter/facebook people are loose on the street! i mean when they had to re-shelve that copy of private benjamin it slowed them down a bit. now they are fast zombies.

Really, he's my favorite music writer working today. And his shit absolutely needs to get into next year's Da Capo Best Music Writing series. Nabisco's right, his essays use a really great personal narrative structure that runs through his work, and it's fantastic. I find that a lot of music crit runs together into one big formless uninteresting mass, but this guy has a VOICE. And not many people do. I like writers whose personal style I can recognize, follow, understand, and I like being able to reconcile the crit with the writer, and see the two as a piece. I can do that with (to name Pfork writers in conjunction with PFF talk) Breihan, Tim F, Jess, Mark R, Ewing, Drake, nabisco, Mike McG, Scott P. And much as I'm sure several of them would resent seeing their name next to the PRR fella, I'd put him in the same league at this point. He's as good as any Pfork writer working today. And that's incredible.

What's political music? All music is political, right? You either make music that pleases the king and his court, or you make music for the serfs outside the walls. It's what music (and culture) is for, right? To distract or confront, or both at the same time? So many of us know already that shit is fucked.
this seems reasonable but godspeed is certainly not making music for the serfs but for a very rarified, culturally elite listenership. i suspect the music they'd consider king-music, by contrast, has populist appeal

Montreal has a very dusty time at the end of winter, and sometimes during winter, when the snow melts and reveals all the sand and little rocks that the city uses instead of salt on the roads and sidewalks. The wind is dry, churns up the grit, the whole city feels dirty, is like that every year.

sadly mordy certain people who abuse you in public like twitter have one rule for themselves and one rules for others. They wont even let you fight back without playing the victim despite it being them who started it. You will find its happened to lots of former ilxors.
― Algerian Goalkeeper, Monday, 15 October 2012 16:41 (thirteen years ago)
Mordy, I have no idea what started this, or whether you're in the right or in the wrong, but the best way to handle it would be to walk away and stop posting about it.

Mordy, my apologies: I've had a fucking awful day and haven't behaved well here. I'm sorry. My Boomtown Rats post had nothing to do with anything outside of this thread, though.

it's fine. this hasn't been a shining moment for me either. i'm just going to let this whole thing drop and forget about it.

Agreed.

so which one of you is @hateindierock?

Lex.

I'm enjoying @hateindierock pretty well, if for nothing else than nostalgia for alt.rec.misc.sociology.music, or whereever it was where we did this stuff back before the web, but after college dorm-rooms. But I think this kind of thing almost always falls apart when it gets to specifics. And Link Wray doesn't count. I hate Grizzly Bear just as much as the next guy (even before I see the xpost), but I don't think they're making music for beer money or oil money or Quiznos or whatever, and I don't think we'll get anywhere useful by assuming their fans are defined by insecurity or insincerity or insolvency. At least no more than Link Wray's were and are.
In fact, turn it around: You'll only understand why people seem to put with music you despise if you can get inside those people and hear the music with their ears, from within their lives. And to do that you have to accept the humanity and earnestness of those lives, and once you do that, you'll understand how that music can be great, or even necessary. And once you do that, it's yet another effort to climb back into your own life, and understand with the same kind of perspective how the music you love can be great and necessary. And after a few such iterations, learning how to love new things, you realize that this is kind of the meaning of life.
But it's hard, and thus it shouldn't be very surprising that there's such an industry in selling people easy packaged facsimiles of this difficult and time-consuming experience. But is Chipotle bad because the little taqueria you like better is better, or good because anything is better than Taco Bell? A @hatechipotle blog might have the same sort of Pump Up the Volume charm, too, but if you bite into a great burrito and what you're thinking to yourself has anything at all to do with Chipotle, then I think you haven't quite got the point yet.

I read this from one of the tQ writers a few weeks back and didnt hate it, a much more lucid voicing of some of the same concerns

It's not directly related but I think Windy's farewell-to-live-shows piece I've been talking about today here and elsewhere parallels certain concerns:

fwiw, Mordy, w/o taking sides, because, again, I don't know the context, I don't really understand how one can "stalk" a twitter. Nonetheless, walk away.

I don't know that much but I know enough to know that the manifesto at the top of this thread is unreadable 6thformer gubbins. If the incumbent revolutionary Twitter Twat is over 30 years old like some have suggested, they seriously need to grow the fuck up.
