Goths have slightly better clothes, but hippies don't wear make-up. What drugs did goths do, if any? Whatever they were, they can't have been as bad as the ones hippies did. The running joke is that I look like a Phish fan (ahem), but the truth is if I could manage it every day would be spent wearing various combinations of lush black things, make-up and utterly teased hair. I do not for the simple reason that in Southern California it's too damn hot for that.

Besides which, my favorite all time groups including the Chameleons, Depeche, the Cure, Bauhaus, and Joy Division/New Order. What the hell else do you think I'm going to choose? :-)

OK, so I was looking for Goth web-pages last year while researching an angry letter denouncing Terry Eagleton — this is TRUE, if mad (sad also, seeing as I never actually finished or sent it) — and I found a site consisting of a list of the problems facing Goths that live in Florida.

My favourite: you spend most daytimes indoors, so your skin is v.pasty-pale. Florida is hot, so when you go out, you wear only one layer of clothing, a T-shirt, say. But ther T-shirt is black (obviously): so the material doesn't block ultra-violet.

Back in the day I would have said "Goth", no question, but after going to the farewell Cure concert (yeh, right) I decided that I actually find true goths pretty loathesome. And it's pretty telling that one of my favourite songs of last year was "Goth Girl" by John Wesley Harding. Not that I particularly have much time for true hippies, either, but at least with hippies there's some sense of idealism, that they can make the world a better place if they could only just stand up when this trip finishes.

A couple that I knew used to arrange a goth convention in town every year or so, and they've finally given up in disgust when they realized just how silly the whole thing was and how little they had in common with the participants. They had t-shirts that said something to the effect of "Vampires aren't real", which earned them little more than withering stares from many of the participants.

In my experience hippies often espouse idealism while usually practicing the opposite, which is one of the reason I find them so irritating.

Goth girls certainlly do win cuteness hands down. I can't really get along with either type (in pure form), but the whole goth-girl image always has a strange allure for me (like the sound of marching feet, no?). Also, there was a Furthur (misspelling intentional, right?) Festival at Berkely and the fucking hippies took all the parking spaces for a three mile radius. Then they never left when the concert ended. Instead they sat around all the sidewalks and got stoned and stayed stoned and just sat there like fucking dirty hippies. Goddamn hippies stole my parking space. I still haven't forgiven them for that.

I'm reading all this with amazement, and I'm embarassed my first post is in response to all this, but...

Ok, if by "hippies vs. goths" you mean late 60's/early 70's primarily Bay Area rock bands vs. bands like Bauhaus and Sisters of Mercy... come on. When the goth thing started it was an entertaining pose, but the music was always more about spooky production and posturing than real songwriting. Yes, I know there was some good music produced. Who is going to stand up, to name a random example, to Joni Mitchell (not really a hippie anyway) in terms of songwriting skill? I guess Robert Smith, if your tastes go that way, but as an overall genre?? I'm not even a big fan of what this thread is calling "hippie" music, but goth is a threadbare pose.

By the way, you certainly can smoke speed. This practice is probably not favored by either hippies OR goths, but somebody was asking.

Hippies or goths? Hmmmmm ... the choice is kinda like choosing between having your home infested with rats or with cockroaches. Don't really want either, but if someone put a gun to your head and you've gotta choose ...

I guess I'd pick hippies, because I can at least understand what they're about (or at least what they purport to be all about). Plus I've got a few Neil Young (the acoustic ones), Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin CDs lying around. And I like pot. On the other hand, nothing in this world is dumber than a dumb hippie. Hippies have too strong a tendency to do dumb things -- like go to Phish concerts, play David Peel records, serve soggy & bland vegetarian food, smoke & sell skunk weed (and burn disgusting incense to cover up the stench emanating therefrom) and vote for Ralph Nader. And while I've met cute hippie chicks, they always turn out to be psychos.

Goths I don't understand at all. I might understand it if it was a joke, but it isn't. I guess that's the crux of it with me. On the other hand, the Goths I have known have been much sweeter and nicer than the hippies I've known, and have more of a (self- deprecating) sense of humor than hippies do. The Goths also like that I have a few Christian Death and Sister of Mercy CDs around. And since they're always so mopey, they don't go out and do the stupid things hippies are wont to do. Plus, they like my name -- I guess they think anything European-sounding or ethnic is Goth or something.

Why do this goths vs hippies..

Hippies are dirty, lazy, jobless, pot smoking, losers. Hippies were about peace and love, not war. But now they seem to be about shitty music, not washing, and being stoned all the time.

Goths are annoying, self absorbed, pretentious, mopey, whiney, and generally pathetic. Goths have better music. but i must say this SISTERS OF MERCY ARE NOT GOTH, NEVER HAVE BEEN AND NEVER WILL, goths just seemed to have claimed them as being goth because they like them.

i was once a goth, but got tired of the patheticness of it all.

I was at Coney Island yesterday at the Mermaid Day Parade. Because the parade was started by the people who run the freak show, it's got a heavy greaser / rockabilly vibe - tattoos, classic Chryslers, shades, dark lipstick, sneering. It dawned on me that goths and greasers ("rockers") go together like peanut butter and chocolate - SAME fashion sense, different bands. So it made perfect sense when I finally saw an organic combination - 3 girls in sleeveless black tees (one reading "Motorhead"), blood-red lipstick, sunglasses, studded leather bracelets, and parasols to keep the sun off their alabaster cheeks.

So goths. Their natural allies are way more interesting.

Goths!!! I can say that goths have a way cooler fashion sense, they are way more imginative, creative, and all around smarter. Sure, they're self absorbed, but who isn't. Well, it depends. Hippies are pretty much all the same, there aren't really any sub-sub cultures as far as hippies go. But goths fit into all kinds of little sub-groups. If you're talking about the European- Victorian style goths, or "originals" well, I'll have to go with hippies. These goths are boring and pompous. They think they're gods of the world and are always going on about how goth they are or how un-goth "lesser" goth groups are. They write really lame poetry and wear the stupidest clothes (tight theater pants and big puffy shirts). Plus their slow, self absorbed music is like, what, a hundred years old? But if you're talking about punk goths, they win hands down. They're the ones you probably remember seeing: black clothes, lots of cool necklaces, jewelry, dark lipstick, black nail polish, military boots, wildly styled or colored hair, basically very spooky or vampiric looking: very cool. These goths are nice despite their looks, fun to be around, more artistic and creative than the former, who simply copy what history has already given them, and they like cool music (Marilyn Manson, Rammstein, Nine inch nails). Hippies, I think, only give out their peace preachings to avoid going to war. Basically, punk goths win over hippies, hippies over the victorians. but with such a diverse group as goths, it's really hard to judje.

Goths Vs. Hippies...hmm, tough one...

Hard to answer, because I don't know many honest-to-god hippies. But the ones I do know seem to be kinda insular and unfriendly, though I really like a lot of hippie music -- most of the 60s classics, and Phish, though the Phish ripoffs are HORRIBLE, sounding more like third-rate Spin Doctors clones.

Goths, on the other hand, are quite friendly and open, despite their sometimes alarming appearances. Their music is truly horrible, though. And for what it's worth, the goths I know are just as unemployed and narcotized as the hippies.

Goths listen to much more interesting music (Bauhaus, Sisters of Mercy) - but all the Goths I have known have been judgemental and pseudo-intellectual.

Hippies listen to a lot of shit (Dead, Phish) - although music that they don't listen to, but should (Blind Faith) is cool. But Hippies tend to be more accepting of other people and more willing to help someone. But I still hate all the fake hippies on Haight in San Francisco - They'll beg for money to eat, but they have plenty of money for MJ and patchouli.

Seattle has a Haight Street, too. Broadway on Capitol Hill. Except a lot of the folks there are certifiably insane, as opposed to pretending to be. And the worst offense of beggars hypocrisy I've seen there is a bad attempt at raver fashion.

Goths - so much. What have hippies got going for them othere than free love, premiscuous sex with many varied partners, often, and weed? Nothing - where as goths have - er - metal music - the whole life style - the clothes - the culture - marjuana - I give up - theres too much stuff to mention.

Well, I'm not one to judge goths since I've never associated with any, but as a part of the tour scene, I gotta say a lot (not all) of today's "hippies" just suck! Behind all this preaching of peace and love lies a sickening display of superficiality. Some of you are the most self- absorbed people I've ever met, you're disrespectful and destructive at shows (throwing shoes in the aisles), you drive like you're the only people on the road, and the only things you can talk about are drugs and getting fucked up. Kids, wake up! The music, the dancing, the road, it's all great, but there is a world outside of the clouds you've stuck your heads in. Again, this doesn't apply to everyone, but if this message hurts you at all, maybe you need to do a little self- analysis. I was into goth several years ago. My hair looks different now and I has left the scene, tired of stupid pale blackdressed people. But, anyway, there are wonderful and smart goth people too, and some gothic rock bands remains my favorites (Siouxsie, Bauhaus, L'Ame Immortelle, Attrition, Collection D'Arnell Andrea, Sunday Munich, Death In June, In The Nursery, etc.). I was just making a quick jab at your 'no exception' comment. I've met some intelligent, worthwhile hippies, and some real dingbat goth kids. And vice versa.

wow, i can't believe how steriotypical some people are, jeez(or if thats the point, then im sorry.)If you call goth a scene, then of course you're not gonna like it or you'll just end up dropping it if u took it up. Goth is all in your head, a fascination with some of the darker things of life. People who can find beauty in the dark, people who can find beauty from death, or pain. Too me, a lot of goth is a way of describing something, i have gothic interests and i enjoy a lot of dark art, but i don't call myself a goth. Too many people turn it into an image Ok, i could make this post longer but i think i'm gonna send it the way it is now, as i am not even sure if my post fits with the subject.

You know, I took that little quiz that was posted on Sept 26, 2001, and found out I was 70% goth, 30% alternative, and only 5% trendy. So wow, I'm apparently very, very, very goth. Here's what it said along with said results:

Conclusion: Angry *and* arrogant! What a combination. You have just enough knowledge of the world to really resent it properly.

Hurrah. In honor of these results, I'm now having a celebration tonight. A black celebration. ;)

I do try to get as little sun as I possibly can, and I do wear a lot of black or dark-colored clothes, and I did once go through a period in my life when I wrote horrible dark poetry, and I do prefer those darker shades of makeup, but wow, I don't look at myself and say, "Hey, there's a goth chick!" Even right now, I don't look particularly goth-ish -- a red blouse and dark blue jeans and I probably look quite "average Jane". But I did feel immensely happy about one side effect of my anemia period from a few years back, i.e. having a paler complexion. So, um, er, there you go.

the person who started this should have mentioned if she meant 60s style hippies, or contemporary hippies. back in the day hippies were mostly cool (every generation has annoying david crosby-esque types, but even he made good music in the early part of his career). modern day hippies are mostly trustfund kiddies, no? that type suxxxx.

goths are classic for being so ridiculous, but there is nothing sadder in this universe than a middle-aged goth.
