I hope you're not knocking Teqkilla, because that's one of the best aural evocations of being drunk I've heard.
― MatthewK, Wednesday, 3 July 2013 10:23 (twelve years ago)
Why would I knock the best song on the album?
― big black nemesis, Puya chilensis (DJP), Wednesday, 3 July 2013 13:04 (twelve years ago)
Teqkilla is great. It goes beyond evoking drunkenness. Those ultra-compressed analog synth stabs seem designed to induce hangovers.
Lovalot is where it all falls apart.
― Moodles, Wednesday, 3 July 2013 13:15 (twelve years ago)
The off-kilter Opal sample "Lovalot" is my favorite thing on the album
― The Reverend, Wednesday, 3 July 2013 13:26 (twelve years ago)
sample on*
yeah "Lovalot" rules too
"Story To Be Told" through "It Iz What It Iz" is straight up intolerable though
― big black nemesis, Puya chilensis (DJP), Wednesday, 3 July 2013 13:27 (twelve years ago)
naw those songs are cool as a mid-album respite. only track on Maya I don't fux with is the Sleigh Bells one
― The Reverend, Wednesday, 3 July 2013 13:38 (twelve years ago)
more like Sleigh Balls amirite
lovealot is rad.
― Treeship, Wednesday, 3 July 2013 13:42 (twelve years ago)
i disagree with DJP on this one. i love when it gets lazy and meandering between Lovalot and It iz what it iz. Just overall, I love the sounds she is working with, like retrofuturist 90s internet stuff, return of the very recently repressed. It sounds dystopian, but like M.I.A. has found a way to thrive in this anarchic digital future.
― Treeship, Wednesday, 3 July 2013 13:54 (twelve years ago)
i at least half like those watery midsection tracks too, though i've never associated them with yesterday's internet futurism. they're not great by any means, but pleasant enough, half catchy, and a welcome respite from the noize.
― Me and my pool noodle (contenderizer), Wednesday, 3 July 2013 14:35 (twelve years ago)
just because it's clangy and anarchic and the internet today is much smoother and more functional than, i think, people would have imagined just ten years ago.

http://www.theguardian.com/music/2013/oct/19/mia-interview-super-bowl-google
In August, I was sent an early copy of the album, but after a couple of days had it whipped away from me, "for minor tweaking". I didn't get it back until two months later, and it was noticeably different. There's a bit of everything, from Hindi punk rap to the self-referential Boom Skit about her time in America ("Brown girl, turn your shit down… Let you into Super Bowl, you try to steal Madonna's crown"), to the gorgeous lushness of Sexodus, a collaboration with The Weeknd. Then it was whipped away again.

― Matt DC, Monday, 4 November 2013 08:53 (eleven years ago)
Well the title track is almost identical to 'Boyz' so you're in luck there.
This album is kind of a mess but it's an enjoyable one, considerably more so than the last one which was just a drag. I was expecting The Weeknd collaboration to be the most obnoxious song ever written but it turned out to be pretty good.
― Matt DC, Monday, 4 November 2013 10:01 (eleven years ago)
wow this album is actually pretty good huh!
feel like the first half is a bit of a mess (apart from "warriors" which is excellent) and "come walk with me" was kind of awful, but it really takes off with "boom skit" - gets funnier, sharper, more self-aware, more scornful. beats sound as pissed off as she does.
lmao @ the shampoo interpolation! mdc you know one of the trax that never made the album actually sampled blur's "tender" (absolutely dreadful obv). reminding us all that she was in the SAME SCHOOL YEAR as justine frischmann

reminding us all that she was in the SAME SCHOOL YEAR as justine frischmann
actually wiki says justine is 44 and maya is 38, so not same school year. is this possible though? they were BFFs at college, a six years age gap seems a bit much for that?

While it still packs a diverse wallop, “Matangi” also revisits many of M.I.A.’s past sources. Its lyrics present her more as a party animal than a political one, and the tracks settle at times for the conventions of current pop.

ppl thinking "come walk with me" is a standout in any way are INSANE imo, it's about the only thing here i have zero use for. flat vocals that really show up her lack of a singing voice (in a way that the weeknd tracks don't), lumbering melody that belongs in a britpop-era indie disco, grafted-on noisy bits that sound far less jolting than they should because she's doing similar things but better all over the rest of the album
only other kinda-dud is "aTENTion" which is just a bit annoying (oh and "bad girls" is as whatevzzz as it always was) but the rest is really superb
― lex pretend, Monday, 4 November 2013 18:47 (eleven years ago)

it's funny listening to that Youtube stream, it'll go to an ad between songs and there's a 6/8-ish brostep beat that's a little corny but allllmost plausible as an M.I.A. intro.
― festival culture (Jordan), Monday, 4 November 2013 21:21 (eleven years ago)

I like "Bad Girls" and "Warriors" and parts of a few other songs.
― EZ Snappin, Tuesday, 5 November 2013 03:49 (eleven years ago)
"Bad Girls" is like "Applause" in that it just sounds like a generic example of that artist's work that's solid but offers no surprises. It was disappointing as a lead single but doesn't stick out in a bad way in the middle of an album.
― old homophobic boom bap rap traditionalist (The Reverend), Tuesday, 5 November 2013 04:24 (eleven years ago)
I agree it's pretty much M.I.A.-by-numbers, but on this album that makes it a standout track.

Rev - I trust your taste and discernment. What track should I revisit, and what should I be listening for? I'm not yanking your chain, but genuinely bummed that this isn't connecting at all when I've really enjoyed her work in the past. Maybe I need a new way in.

6.5
― Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 5 November 2013 06:17 (eleven years ago)
i don't hate it, it's just pretty boring and generic as rev says. more baffled by people freaking out over it than over worse mia songs that at least have character.
this would be...all of them i think? apart from the singles off maya that weren't "xxxo"
― lex pretend, Tuesday, 5 November 2013 07:14 (eleven years ago)
XXXO is worse than Bad Girls as well. Bad Girls isn't actually a bad song per se, but it just screams of an obvious lack of effort by everyone concerned.
― Matt DC, Tuesday, 5 November 2013 10:01 (eleven years ago)
mia singles, ranked:
galangbird fluy.a.l.a.bring the noizebucky done gunpaper planeshombresunshowersjimmyboyzxxxoteqkillabad girlsborn freeit takes a musclecome walk with metell me whyinternet connectionsteppin' up
- i had no idea there were so many singles from maya. i couldn't remember half of them, reminding myself was a SLOG - everything beneath "born free" is even worse than i remember- i prefer remixes to many of her originals - dj marlboro on "bucky done gun" would probably be my #1, the salt'n'pepa version of "sunshowers" would bump it up a few, same for the riton rerub of "xxxo", nicki minaj on "teqkilla" adds a small degree of much-needed focus- my actual favourite m.i.a. songs appear to be deep cuts anyway: "hussel", "10 dollar", "bamboo banga", "pull up the people", "uraqt", "hit that"- anyway the point is that "bad girls" is pretty mediocre
― lex pretend, Tuesday, 5 November 2013 10:50 (eleven years ago)
There's an enormous gulf in quality between the top half and bottom half of that list (everything from XXXO down). I don't even know what 'Internet Connection' actually is.
― Matt DC, Tuesday, 5 November 2013 11:20 (eleven years ago)
Boyz >>> most of her singles though (maybe everything except Galang and the other big Kala singles).
― Matt DC, Tuesday, 5 November 2013 11:21 (eleven years ago)
i never really got very excited about "boyz", it just made me want to go back to "bird flu" instead
― lex pretend, Tuesday, 5 November 2013 11:26 (eleven years ago)
the list makes mia seem way worse than she is but only because (so wikipedia told me) there were a zillion singles off her worst album and they really are as bad as you remember
Bamboo banga was the last MIA I got crazy hype about and couldn't stop listening to
― Beatrix Kiddo (Raymond Cummings), Tuesday, 5 November 2013 11:33 (eleven years ago)
listened to the first half of kala on the way to uni this morning - the appeal of "boyz" is chiefly in its monstrous and thrilling percussion
― monotony, Tuesday, 5 November 2013 12:08 (eleven years ago)
yeah, boyz has aged well - i actually like it more now. i love Mango Pickle Down River unreservedly (always have)
― Beatrix Kiddo (Raymond Cummings), Tuesday, 5 November 2013 13:47 (eleven years ago)
(i will say that after listening to Matangi again this morning i'm warming to it, rate it at least higher than MAYA)
― Beatrix Kiddo (Raymond Cummings), Tuesday, 5 November 2013 13:51 (eleven years ago)
I've always quite liked Bird Flu it's kind of walking pace and not quite danceable enough as her best tracks - Boyz is like a better version of the whole big-wall-of-drums thing, there's so much momentum and bounce to it.
― Matt DC, Tuesday, 5 November 2013 15:03 (eleven years ago)
Bird Flu rules because of all of the polyrhythms
― the doleful cant of a bigot blinded by fear and hate (DJP), Tuesday, 5 November 2013 15:07 (eleven years ago)
So on first pass, this seems really good. I'm not sure it does anything she hasn't before, but it's kind of like a classic 4th album that way: summing up what she can do, and doing it as well as she ever has. (Thinking Lifes Rich Pageant or even Zep IV, e.g.)
― something of an astrological coup (tipsy mothra), Tuesday, 5 November 2013 16:49 (eleven years ago)
"boyz" and "bird flu" are amazing. i will probably give this album a listen soon even tho "bring the noize" was not exactly thrilling and her last album was a mess.
― dyl, Tuesday, 5 November 2013 16:55 (eleven years ago)
I have twice this week talked to "industry types" who first castigated M.I.A. for putting out "bad music" and being "difficult to work with", then admitted that they haven't listened to anything since Kala and her reputation for "difficulty" is based on third/fourth/fifth-hand accounts >:(

me too, on both counts. I'm surprised people on FB are saying "bangers" because the mix sounds claustrophobic and small, but in a nice way
― flamboyant goon tie included, Tuesday, 5 November 2013 20:49 (eleven years ago)
Totally agreed there. Not huge at all.
― Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 5 November 2013 21:08 (eleven years ago)
is it possible that the extreme compression on Maya got dialed back a bit? There's a particular synth stab in "Teqkilla" that is pushed so hard in the mix that it instantly makes me feel like I'm hungover. And "Steppin' Up" feels like being assaulted with power tools.
I can't tell if this is a real change or just the result of listening to this on youtube.
― Moodles, Tuesday, 5 November 2013 21:17 (eleven years ago)
I think feeling like you were being assaulted by power tools was the point of "Steppin' Up" (not my fave song) and "Teqkilla" was supposed to make you feel queasy and hungover (fukkin love this song)
― the doleful cant of a bigot blinded by fear and hate (DJP), Tuesday, 5 November 2013 21:57 (eleven years ago)
well, that's certainly true. I think they achieved that by pushing the loudness to a certain extreme. It sounds like the overall signal levels on Matangi might not be pushed as hard. Perhaps a retreat in the loudness wars?
― Moodles, Tuesday, 5 November 2013 22:02 (eleven years ago)
That quest story is a+

Had this on in the car when I picked up the kids. My oldest is 9 now, and I have a video of him dancing to "Bird Flu" when he was 3 -- it was his favorite song then. At various points since, he's loved "Paper Planes," "$20" and "Bad Girls." His pick off the new one is the title track -- after about 30 seconds he said, "I want that one on my next mix CD."
― something of an astrological coup (tipsy mothra), Wednesday, 6 November 2013 04:00 (eleven years ago)
this sounds very stripped down and quiet to me compared to everything she's done, but especially MAYA. i like it, even though i love those albums too.
― Treeship, Wednesday, 6 November 2013 07:55 (eleven years ago)
i am not understanding any of the people saying this is small-sounding or quiet. it's cacophonous and huge, in a good way

― flamboyant goon tie included, Wednesday, 6 November 2013 11:40 (eleven years ago)
I think you DO care when there isn't any space in a beat, but also it sort of doesn't matter whether this is overcompressed or not, it's supposed to be a barrage of sound.
― Matt DC, Wednesday, 6 November 2013 12:32 (eleven years ago)
Her sound, or soundscape, is so distinct -- no matter which producers she's working with, she has this instantly identifiable sonic voice. A silky clatter. Even when it's stripped down, it's always bright and colorful. She could do an instrumental album and it would still sound like M.I.A.
― something of an astrological coup (tipsy mothra), Wednesday, 6 November 2013 14:44 (eleven years ago)

I think a lot of critics penalize her over her lyrics
― Moodles, Wednesday, 6 November 2013 20:27 (eleven years ago)
her lyrics have been simple and repetitive since day 1; they function for me as impressionistic padding for the beats that evoke imagery rather than specific storytelling (which make instances of specific storytelling like "Sunshowers" stand out and hit harder IMO)
― the doleful cant of a bigot blinded by fear and hate (DJP), Wednesday, 6 November 2013 20:29 (eleven years ago)

"Sexodus" is kinda beautiful.
― the objections to Drake from non-REAL HIPHOP people (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 21 November 2013 15:31 (eleven years ago)
i like the quietus review of this a lot particularly w/r/t authenticity/being a 2nd generation immigrant (even if it bashes assange which is just way too easy these days), but not sure about sexodus - it seems to position MIA in a very sexual way which i dont think shes really done before, i always thought she was interesting for having resisted the usual route female artists have to go down. it also sounds way too much like a weeknd song on an MIA album. i find the album brilliant, esp sonically, but also hard work to really get to grips with - its pretty slippery and seems to lack hooks to really sink your teeth into.
― StillAdvance, Tuesday, 26 November 2013 09:00 (eleven years ago)
I tend to skip Sexadus for the reason you mention AND because it's so corny and weird (and ineffective), like that song on Kala with timbaland
― Beatrix Kiddo (Raymond Cummings), Tuesday, 26 November 2013 11:58 (eleven years ago)
its really silly (not in a fun way either, its just a groaner). not really surprised madonna passed on it.
― StillAdvance, Tuesday, 26 November 2013 12:04 (eleven years ago)
Interesting, for I've barely heard the lyrics after a month with this thing.
― the objections to Drake from non-REAL HIPHOP people (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 26 November 2013 12:07 (eleven years ago)
i dont think the record is cluttered or anything but yeah theres something very 'busy' about it that i think means it seems quite dazzling but also means it doesnt achieve much in the way of 'clarity of purpose' or whatever (though maybe i just need to spend more time with it, i just remember every time i heard it, its been pretty overwhelming)
― StillAdvance, Tuesday, 26 November 2013 12:37 (eleven years ago)
thx stilladvance
i'm pretty surprised i like "sexodus" myself, on paper it really shouldn't work. reprising "exodus" actually works well in terms of the album's sequencing. sort of interesting how little is actually changed, if she wanted to make some sort of point about the political vs the erotic she could have really laid it on thick, but she restrains herself from doing that - the strength of the music carries it.
don't think i'd have ever guessed the weeknd's involvement if he hadn't been credited.
― lex pretend, Tuesday, 26 November 2013 12:46 (eleven years ago)
the album's full of hooks imo, it's pretty messy and overwhelming but they're there. it definitely coheres in the second half - the first three proper songs are amazing but probably as difficult as the album gets, then you get two absolutely dreadful clunkers, then "exodus" as a much-needed breathing space that's still completely unexpected, then "bad girls" which really doesn't need to be on this album in any way, and THEN it kicks into gear and doesn't let up
― lex pretend, Tuesday, 26 November 2013 12:49 (eleven years ago)
(i don't think i'll ever stop hating on "come walk with me", it's just a wretched wretched song)
yeah when The Singles Jukebox reviewed it I gave it a middling score without quite figuring out what irritated me. Now I realize: it all comes down to the "fucks with me" part.
