Not sure if Cymande counts as "r+b" or not.

But they are one of my favorite bands of all time, in any case. So I, of course, love to bring them up whenever possible.

five years pass...

re-visitied Brian Mcknight's album Anytime, prob been about 15 years since i heard it last. not really random since it's double platinum but dont really hear anything about it any more. holds up really well. 'Anytime', 'The Only one For Me' and 'Hold Me' were great singles (altho i guess Anytime wasnt officially a single? despite being everywhere for a while)

'I belong to you' sounds like something ty$ could release today
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pyn8vpcG0XU

'you got the bomb' - some nice wah and slap bass - great intro
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3SNE-I_RKWM

'til i get over you' is probably my favorite album cut on here tho

lol apparently a new yfn lucci song w/ trey songz samples that ^^^. maybe that's why i randomly heard it again on a quiet storm hour around the time of making that post

the new one is lyrically clunky and generally undistinguished... but the smoldering production, even lifted wholesale from "missing you" like that, makes it stand out somehow

yvette michele — "let's stay together"

the whole album is fantastic. i was a huge fan back then and have fond memories of buying the album on its release date. it came out the week before i started my sophomore year in high school, so it's pretty much peak nostalgia at this point. album still holds up, too. very much "fake mary j", but killer production and i love her voice, so i was okay with it. and plus, it taught me the invaluable lesson of being nice to short people.

so andy just reminded me of something that i had completely forgotten. . .
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cKEn47RKU4E

(song is the "oh honey" remix of "kissin' you" by total)

i had this on a cassette single that had the original (raphael saadiq produced!) mix and this remix on both sides of the tape. and i had an auto-reverse player, so i often played just those two mixes over and over again, but the remix was my preferred version. i picked it up at sam goody one day when they were having a rare promotion where they would put cassette singles on sale; certain titles would be three for $7 (+sales tax, of course). you had to buy three to get the deal, otherwise it was just regular price and most cassette singles were $2.99, so it was kind of buy two get one free. anyway, i had two other tapes i wanted (probably hiphop titles; there's some debate as to what they were) and just bought the total one so i could get the deal. it ended up being my favorite, or at least the one i played the most.

I was loving Lovecraft Country for the old stuff tehy were p[laying and wishing they'd avoid newer sounds.
Do love that stuff from jumnp blues in teh 40s through to the point when it evolves into something more recognisable as soul and protofunk and things.

Have had bits of Bobby Bland running through my head and want to pick up that Solomon Burke set soon.
Not going to get to browse places like FOPP, Honest Jon's and various other places in London this Xmas which is a shame.
BUt assume they may not be open for things like that at the moment anyway.

Would like to go back to something for a moment. And if you know Golden Age era hiphop and have pressed play on the above link, you probably have already recognized one of the most absolutely infectious and carefree moments in recorded music. The song that channeled that moment is 'Evil Vibrations' by The Mighty Ryeders. It's a song that has been compiled many times because of its hiphop notoriety and we have subsequently heard it a lot. It's a song that Andy knows well enough to of course know all of the words, but also all of those little one-off inflections and imperfections that make it such an absolutely classic track. The way the sax solo is constantly up and down in the mix throughout its duration, as if the player couldn't stay near the mic for more than two seconds, when the initial verse harmony hits when the second vocalist come in there's this funny little vocalization — too many things that Andy has noticed, because I have listened to it a lot.

The band that created that masterpiece only ever released one poorly distributed album in 1978 and seems to have promptly disappeared — though Andy can't remember reading about them in Wax Poetics, that does seem like the kind of place where one may have read about them in the 21st century. We had never heard the album until very recently. It was reissued in the early 90s by the great Luv`n`Haight label and has stayed in print via vinyl reissues in recent years, which is terrific. We finally decided it was time to seek out the album after 'Evil Vibrations' recently showed up in an unpredictable way. And wow, am very glad we did. Not so much in actual music, but in the vibe of the magnitude of this hidden masterpiece, Andy would absolutely liken it to Shuggie Otis, 24 Carat Black, or maybe even David Axelrod in terms of how its greatness is only matched by its obscurity. As for actual sonics, it would seem like the group was probably big fans of Earth, Wind, + Fire (and it would have been amazing to see them get a larger budget and chase this sound a little more seriously) and some of the more mid-tempo numbers are reminiscent of the Come Into Knowledge album by RAMP (if you know that one, which you should). For the most part, it's just that kind of mid-70s funk that is so recognizable and likeable — but there's some ballads in there and they're just as great. It's been one of the only things we've been listening to lately and it's one of Andy's favorite things to have come along in quite a while.

Feeling a bit mellower this Saturday evening. My favorite D'Angelo song because I am, in fact, made of cheese:

"I Found My Smile Again" (1996)

Great track. 1996 ruled

I don’t think I had ever heard “My Boo (Hitman's Club Mix)” until today – what a glorious track

Update: I’ve since heard “My Boo” several times in the wild; my wife said it was playing in The Gap the other day. Clearly part of a broader ’90s renaissance… (my wife and others also insist that I’ve heard the song in the past; I’m sure they’re right!)

xp I note that Wikipedia sez “My Boo” saw a revival in interest in 2016 "through the Running Man Challenge,” a dance which “went viral on Vine”… so apparently I’m behind the times even with respect to the revival.

Miami Bass and related styles sound really good right now, for whatever reason.

the entire hearsay album is so classic <3

Miami Bass and related styles sound really good right now, for whatever reason

they always do! but yeah the sound is seeing a bit of a mini-revival, tho nothing tremendous yet. it wasn't a huge hit, but i loved summer walker's "ex for a reason" last year. now megan/dua "sweetest pie" has been launched very obviously with the intention of being big and hm, i'm not sure it entirely works so well. i'm surprised i'm not compelled to return to it often given that i am a total sucker for just about anything that executes the style well

i have heard "my boo" in public a number of times in recent years, though i don't recall where right now other than that once was somebody singing it at a karaoke bar

dyl, Friday, 25 March 2022 03:20 (two years ago) link

Have always loved "My Boo" just heard it everywhere for about two summers straight and turned into a musical grouch in the meantime. I'm sure I've heard it in some store recently and thought "Oh yeah, this is a good song!" and then promptly forgotten about it upon leaving the store.

I guess this is on the "old" side of random old - but Doris Troy's early stuff was really great. "Just One Look" is an absolutely all-time recording – I don't care how many times it's been covered, the Pepsi commercials, etc. – the original still knocks me out when I listen to it. (TIL it was recorded in 10 minutes, as a demo, and then released as-is!!)

Lot of other strong material on that first album, too – I love the sound and the songs. I haven't listened closely to her Apple Records album or later stuff.

Classic jam is classic. No arguments here. I know nothing besides the big hit. Queued up the Apple album, will check back in.

Let's disco dance, Hammurabi! (Austin), Thursday, 14 April 2022 19:20 (two years ago) link

Well, hrmph. The Apple album turned into a skimmer for me. I'm still in the middle of it, but it's mostly just chuggy horn rock. Maybe a more rock-oriented early Stax kind of sound. She wrote or co-wrote most of the songs and the band is full of all-stars, so there's plenty to appreciate— for someone who's a bigger fan than I am because this . . . isn't really my thing. But it's not awful.

Yeah! I didn't know about that Basement Jaxx song, but I immediately recognized the groove because I'm positive "Red Alert" was used in some commercial at some point in the past. Just super random where some of these sampled grooves end up and a reminder that I'm in the right place because dammit, I LOVE MUSIC.

Vivian Green — "Music" (2002)

All it's missing is a rap feature and it would've been a 12" single I would've gladly sought out. And I never did check her out at the time because I was a snob. So we're listening to the whole album for the first time. Beats are across the board excellent. Her voice and the lyrics are just okay. Feels very much like the kind of music you hear/?would have heard? in shopping mall clothing stores with very bright lights and shiny tile floors. I am going to check out her more recent album from 2020 soon, as it was completely not on my radar at the time.

Let's disco dance, Hammurabi! (Austin), Sunday, 1 May 2022 23:40 (two years ago) link

Upon listening to the rest of the album, the lyrics got worse.

Here's the biggest offender:

[Chorus x2]
I'm fanatically addicted, see
The way that he be loving me
It's like a drug
Or some bad habit
Since it's mine
I got to have it

Yeah. She sounds super depressed throughout the whole thing.

I'm not lying though — the beats are all really good.

Zhane` — "Just Like That" (1997)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tXC5ITpA4OU

whole album is great. when you think 'what did r+b sound like in 1997?' it's probably similar to something on this album. very cliche and zeitgeist-y, complete with a 1 9 9 7 M E N T A L I T Y ™ "BECAUSE WE CAN!" cover of "good times" and a 70 minute running time. and hey, about that: idk maybe don't banish all of the slow jams to the second half honestly i hate the sequence on this album☺ — but anyway some stuff should definitely have been cut. even so, the best songs hang with the best of the hits of their contemporaries. why have i never listened to it before now? it's not quite considered a proper "classic album", so maybe not quite xpost to what was the last 'classic album' you got and were knocked out by? though i can say for certain if i had actually bothered to listen to it back then i would have loved it as much as i do right now. damn good. 4 mics.

one of the more niche things that stones throw ever did was the soul cal label, which was reissues of disco obscutities from southern california. i paid attention to the first couple releases, but it eventually got lost in the shuffle. revisiting now; highly recommend across the board. a more disco-fied eccentric soul kind of vibe. really hitting the spot.

jenevieve - "deep in the shallow end" (2022)

i love her, btw. first found her thanks to ya'll + this ep is still her most recent thing. this song closes it out + i am at a stage with it where i'm deep diving into the lyrics. but what a bop! the mildly peter hook-y part, the chorus that's ripping off something i can't place rn, the whole 'underneath the wave' coda... this jam is an entire meal.
