this is a weird album to poll but "turn on the lights" obv

J0rdan S., Monday, 10 December 2012 13:39 (twelve years ago)

you think? idk i didnt think it had an obvious winner + there was no dedicated future thread

just sayin, Monday, 10 December 2012 13:39 (twelve years ago)

neva end

tpp, Monday, 10 December 2012 13:41 (twelve years ago)

i had been thinking of doing some kind of future singles/features type poll just because it doesn't feel fair to stack the hits up against the deep cuts here but obv it's all good

some dude, Monday, 10 December 2012 13:42 (twelve years ago)

1. neva end
2. turn on the lights
3. same damn time
4. you deserve it
5. long live the pimp

classic album. only thing worth keeping from the re-release is diddy's A+ shit-talking on the remix of 'same damn time'

tpp, Monday, 10 December 2012 13:45 (twelve years ago)

"Turn On the Lights."

"Same Damn Time" did a terrific job scaring students from my desk last Tuesday.

the little prince of inane false binary hype (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 10 December 2012 13:46 (twelve years ago)

actually i've been thinking for a while i would love some dude to do us a best 2 chainz verse of the year poll

tpp, Monday, 10 December 2012 13:46 (twelve years ago)

we don't need a poll, it's "mercy"

J0rdan S., Monday, 10 December 2012 13:48 (twelve years ago)

ha i dunno man, there's sooo many, and few real competitors for the "Mercy" verse

ha xpost

some dude, Monday, 10 December 2012 13:49 (twelve years ago)

'parachute' isn't v well liked from what i remember on the rolling thread? It's either that or 'truth gonna..' for me. My favourite and most played album of the year by a distance.

pandemic, Monday, 10 December 2012 13:51 (twelve years ago)

lex is trolling so hard really

tpp, Monday, 10 December 2012 13:56 (twelve years ago)

surprised he can like those 3 songs + then not like the rest

just sayin, Monday, 10 December 2012 13:58 (twelve years ago)

how? i just don't like future much and i def can't take an album's worth. i don't like much goon consensus music atm

#YOLO ONO (lex pretend), Monday, 10 December 2012 13:58 (twelve years ago)

surprised he can like those 3 songs + then not like the rest

because the rest are all the same but in a bad way not in a good waka way

#YOLO ONO (lex pretend), Monday, 10 December 2012 13:58 (twelve years ago)

the whole album except those 3 tracks sounds the same to you? realllly

tpp, Monday, 10 December 2012 14:00 (twelve years ago)

i had to review it and after sitting through the whole thing multiple times i wanted to kill him

#YOLO ONO (lex pretend), Monday, 10 December 2012 14:01 (twelve years ago)

can't even listen to the songs i like any more tbh the experience scarred me

#YOLO ONO (lex pretend), Monday, 10 December 2012 14:02 (twelve years ago)

my fav future verse of the year is prob from 'brick fair'

tpp, Monday, 10 December 2012 14:08 (twelve years ago)

"goon consensus music" should be the title of future's next mixtape

some dude, Monday, 10 December 2012 14:12 (twelve years ago)

yall will have read this post already but to be fair to lex for me personally it wasnt until i got a little back into us radio and stuff hearing him in situ that future really clicked w/ me - like it's not just the question of his having zero profile here but the fundamental sensibility is imo simply not uk-compatible without making the mental adjustment. guys like teeps and idk the martorialist or whoever are a lot more outliery than americans probably can realise or even maybe conceive

(that said lex specifically is obv more about a lexbubble logic than being plugged into any uk habitus)

voted 'turn on the lights' anyway despite not feeling partic qualified really and truly

r|t|c, Monday, 10 December 2012 14:14 (twelve years ago)

it's so obnoxious that after Pluto 3D dropped only the clean version of the original Pluto is on Spotify

some dude, Monday, 10 December 2012 14:24 (twelve years ago)

i was shocked to discover the martorialist was british. i swear he used pretend to be from NY but that might have just been one of his online characters idk

tpp, Monday, 10 December 2012 14:40 (twelve years ago)

dude wtf he's reffed mundane brit stuff since forever!

he can probably come explain for himself actually judging by a suspicious sudden appearance of "mansplaining" recently

One of his ballads, obviously. Turn On The Lights probably takes it.

i think 'you deserve it' is overrated, 'paradise' underrated

cant vote for anything other than 'turn on the lights' tho

i've probably said it before but this song >>> you deserve it

1. Turn on the Lights
2. Straight Up
3. Neva End
4. Same Damn Time

Love love love love love this album.

Tim F, Monday, 10 December 2012 20:16 (twelve years ago)

i believe like pluto 3d makes a grievous error in moving "you deserve it" to track two instead of what closes the regular edition of the original pluto. it functions so well as a closer, or at least after being set up by 14 other tracks...

bish (bosch), don't kill my vibe (rennavate), Monday, 10 December 2012 20:57 (twelve years ago)

yeah the whole idea of Pluto 3D is annoying, messing up the running order and replacing dope songs w/ remixes, instead of just doing a deluxe version w/ extra tracks at the end. the new songs are good, though, especially "First Class Flights."

some dude, Tuesday, 11 December 2012 21:10 (twelve years ago)

All the new songs are great. My is probably my favorite. The Diddy verse on Same Damn Time is good enough reason for its inclusion, and an early You Deserve It works for me. The Neva End remix is weaker than the og though and not jumping directly from the solemn intro to the silly parachute sex makes for a less adventurous album. 3D also feels a bit too long. I'm happy we got both of them, though, since they're so different. Probably my #1 and #2 albums this year.

dyslectic Christ Brown (longneck), Tuesday, 11 December 2012 21:50 (twelve years ago)

his voice on "My" is so crazy

Diddy on "Same" is fun but taking the orig off the album entirely is unacceptable

some dude, Tuesday, 11 December 2012 21:51 (twelve years ago)

Yeah, kinda. But that's the thing. You Deserve It works at the beginning because I already have Pluto and know how it ends. So it takes off where the first one leaves off. You've got to have both.

dyslectic Christ Brown (longneck), Tuesday, 11 December 2012 21:56 (twelve years ago)

So it takes off where the first one leaves off.

― dyslectic Christ Brown (longneck), Tuesday, December 11, 2012 2:56 PM (58 seconds ago) Bookmark Flag Post Permalink

that makes sense, but only if we're getting a majorly different album, and i suppose with all the remixes one could maybe argue that

bish (bosch), don't kill my vibe (rennavate), Tuesday, 11 December 2012 21:59 (twelve years ago)

they should've put the original Future solo tracks in place of the songs that had remixes on the original album ("Magic" and "Tony Montana")

some dude, Tuesday, 11 December 2012 22:00 (twelve years ago)

I think it is a majorly different album, in a Borgesian kind of way. Not saying it could not have been improved on though.

dyslectic Christ Brown (longneck), Tuesday, 11 December 2012 22:03 (twelve years ago)

it's interesting to me that it exists, just that a major label would do this kind of thing for a popular but not hugely selling rap album just cause its singles have legs. will be interesting to see if they really keep pushing him hard in 2013, definitely feels like he could just get bigger and bigger from here.

some dude, Tuesday, 11 December 2012 22:05 (twelve years ago)

Astronaut Status might make my top 5 too. Top 10 at the very least.

dyslectic Christ Brown (longneck), Tuesday, 11 December 2012 22:13 (twelve years ago)

yeah astronaut status is underrated

bish (bosch), don't kill my vibe (rennavate), Tuesday, 11 December 2012 22:16 (twelve years ago)

i feel like the absence of a discernable personality or persona is holding him back somewhat

D-40, Tuesday, 11 December 2012 22:21 (twelve years ago)

yeah i'm not saying he's going to be a superstar, just that things look good for him having at least 2 good years of mainstream presence (as opposed to, say, Waka's one good year)

some dude, Tuesday, 11 December 2012 22:23 (twelve years ago)

I don't think you can write a song like Turn On The Lights without a discernible persona. It just doesn't fit right in with your typical rap persona. It will all become clearer in time.

dyslectic Christ Brown (longneck), Tuesday, 11 December 2012 22:24 (twelve years ago)

i cant discern a personality from that song, it's excellently written and performed, but i get zero sense of who Future is from it.

this doesn't make the song bad, it's just harder to truly crossover, i think, when people aren't invested in your persona, at least for rappers

D-40, Tuesday, 11 December 2012 22:28 (twelve years ago)

i agree w al but there's def a difference between sustaining or slightly raising your presence in the rap/r&b world (esp radio) and truly crossing over. i don't think future is gonna do the latter but the former seems possible at this point... i would be surprised if he fell off like waka

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 11 December 2012 22:31 (twelve years ago)

xpost. Well, who else could perform it? If not many people could make it work, I think that testifies to a persona being in place.

dyslectic Christ Brown (longneck), Tuesday, 11 December 2012 22:32 (twelve years ago)

yeah i deliberately said nothing about 'crossover' because being on a rihanna album cut is probably the ceiling for him as far as that's concerned, i'm just curious whether his 2nd album will have 3 or more solid hits

some dude, Tuesday, 11 December 2012 22:32 (twelve years ago)

i like to think "You Deserve It" is about Future deciding to cheat on his diet

epic album: the pluto (Whiney G. Weingarten), Tuesday, 11 December 2012 22:33 (twelve years ago)

― dyslectic Christ Brown (longneck), Tuesday, December 11, 2012 4:32 PM (3 minutes ago) Bookmark Flag Post Permalink

no, it has to do w/ a performance style being in place

D-40, Tuesday, 11 December 2012 22:36 (twelve years ago)

Well, the style is the man. Eccentric and sensitive but not nerdy or introvert, ignorant but not macho, etc.

dyslectic Christ Brown (longneck), Tuesday, 11 December 2012 22:38 (twelve years ago)

"turn on the lights" has gradually become very heartfelt in my mind, really makes me feel what future's feeling in that way good love songs do even there's nothing 'specific' about their 'persona' per se in the lyrics

some dude, Tuesday, 11 December 2012 22:38 (twelve years ago)

*even though there's

some dude, Tuesday, 11 December 2012 22:39 (twelve years ago)

"turn on the lights" is incredible heartfelt. if not heartfelt what is that song?

bish (bosch), don't kill my vibe (rennavate), Tuesday, 11 December 2012 22:41 (twelve years ago)

not saying it ain't, just that it took the radio saturation for that to sink in for me

some dude, Tuesday, 11 December 2012 22:42 (twelve years ago)

yeah i mean i agree w/ that-- future operates, to me at least, in a way similar to Luther Vandross where he's at once hitting on something very real and true while not actually being a person, i think kelefa w/r/t vandross described him as a disembodied voice or something, a narrator rather than a person

D-40, Tuesday, 11 December 2012 22:54 (twelve years ago)

D-40, Tuesday, 11 December 2012 22:57 (twelve years ago)

I agree that he is difficult to pin down and that his persona is built on contradiction and perhaps some sort of affirmative irony. But that's real and relatable to me.

dyslectic Christ Brown (longneck), Tuesday, 11 December 2012 23:00 (twelve years ago)

hes 'relateable' to me in that hes obv a studio rat / music nerd who spends a lot of time working on music & generally improving at his craft & i greatly appreciate that, but i don't see it as the relatable kind of of Capital-Letter-P Persona that most ppl think of when they think of rappers, but then he's not really a rapper anyway

it doesn't bother me, i'm glad music critics are sticking up for him, but i think it explains why his struggle, despite all the hits, has taken a bit longer, and why people might not ever really LOVE him except as an auteur.

i mean, i saw him live a week or two ago, and he was basically a black hole of stage presence & personality. It doesn't make like his music any less, or anything. i'm sure he has a personality, as a human being, he just doesn't have a performative one

Well I guess you are right that he's not naturally very charismatic, even if that's not what I mean when I speak about personality or persona. I get the impression that he pours all his personality/intelligence/sensitivity/silliness into the music instead, which is why it's so affecting to me. But I can see it not working as well outside of a studio setting. On the other hand I guess Waka is the most charismatic rapper we have right now, and it isn't helping his career much.

Still don't have the same love for this album that most of the regulars here do—loving it means excusing a lot of clumsiness—but it has grown on me a lot over the year. It's been funny seeing how influential it's been, hearing rappers try to imitate the un-imitable. That makes me like the album even more, in a way, since it seems to be setting the stage for a really weird 2013

'hands on u' actually might be my favorite from this year, forgot about it for a second.

Dunno why deej is so down on that track. The weird flows of "Karate Chop" + the histrionics of "Same Damn Time", what's not to love?

The Reverend, Tuesday, 24 September 2013 03:48 (eleven years ago)

i like that he's experimenting with unique flows like "Karate Chop" and "Sh!t" in theory but i don't really dig those songs at all.

Jean-Claude Brand Ambassador (some dude), Tuesday, 24 September 2013 03:55 (eleven years ago)

Yeah his delivery is a little too jarring on the hook, verses are nice tho.

Me & Mahomies (Spottie_Ottie_Dope), Tuesday, 24 September 2013 04:09 (eleven years ago)

The jarring delivery is what makes it work tho

The Reverend, Tuesday, 24 September 2013 04:27 (eleven years ago)

I guess, just need to listen a few more times. I'm sure it will grow on me.

druhilla (k3vin k.), Tuesday, 24 September 2013 05:12 (eleven years ago)

"Honest" is definitely a grower. think my favorite of his recent solo tracks is "How It Was" from the GTAV soundtrack though.

"honest" + "substitute everything" + "how it was" is a pretty strong run of tracks imo

first ever uk gig was pretty banging. area near the front was an immense heaving mass of people for the first 20 minutes or so. the nest is such a weird venue to debut him, i guess that speaks to how they're gonna position him or something? big sean sold out shepherd's bush empire last year so i can't imagine future couldn't have filled a venue of that size rather than a tiny dalston basement. future didn't really bother with crowd engagement, left it all to his dj lol

lex pretend, Thursday, 27 February 2014 09:39 (eleven years ago)

pluto has faded for me over time... has some bangers but a lot of filler imo

his more recent stuff has been a lot better

le goon (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 27 February 2014 16:19 (eleven years ago)

im just bein onions

lag∞n, Thursday, 27 February 2014 16:56 (eleven years ago)

i love pluto but also the stuff since and the stuff before

lag∞n, Thursday, 27 February 2014 16:58 (eleven years ago)

im listening to too confused rn and its a cool style of bouncy casual song like he had on his old tapes eg watch this that pluto didnt really have its one if his coolest styles imo

lag∞n, Thursday, 27 February 2014 17:00 (eleven years ago)

the only song on pluto i dont really like is u deserve it and the production on permanent scar is more like a mixtape and is kinda jarring next to the super polished expensive sound of the rest of the album

lag∞n, Thursday, 27 February 2014 17:10 (eleven years ago)

his voice saying woke up in a new bugatti so perfectly embodies the meaning of the lyric its kinda crazy

live bloggin my future 2013 playlist

lag∞n, Thursday, 27 February 2014 17:15 (eleven years ago)

Pluto holds up well for me compared to the more recent stuff, mostly because Pluto has Future verses and the majority of the songs he's been on since then he just does hooks.

MISTERSNRUB (some dude), Thursday, 27 February 2014 17:24 (eleven years ago)

"You Deserve It" is great, one of the top songs on there for sure

nova, Thursday, 27 February 2014 17:28 (eleven years ago)

I felt really bad panning this album after single after single just grew on me like crazy. But a lot of the filler is so clumsy that I still can hardly listen to it from start to finish.

Evan R, Thursday, 27 February 2014 17:33 (eleven years ago)

you deserve it just like the lyrics are so embarrassing

lag∞n, Thursday, 27 February 2014 17:37 (eleven years ago)

my cousin told me im cool

lag∞n, Thursday, 27 February 2014 17:37 (eleven years ago)

i panned it at the time too, i also think that's because the album is too long/too much/fillery and there was a lot of off-putting feelings talk about sad future and his sad autotune. have really come round on him as an artist since, did not hesitate to go last night

lex pretend, Thursday, 27 February 2014 17:40 (eleven years ago)

the album tracks r really cool u guys r crazy #nofiller #allkiller

lag∞n, Thursday, 27 February 2014 17:41 (eleven years ago)

sad future is cool, all the futures are cool (except u deserve it future) #futuresuperfan

lag∞n, Thursday, 27 February 2014 17:45 (eleven years ago)

ftr the only bad part of Pluto is Snoop. I forget who posted that "You Deserve It" is about Future giving himself permission to stray from his diet but that has perversely made me like that song a lot
