!!! Under New Management !!! It's The ILM NON-ELITIST METAL ALBUMS POLL 2012 NOMINATIONS THREAD

I WEB-mailed AG to see if he was still running the metal poll, and if not, could I take a crack at it. He agreed to hand over the reins, stating he wasn't interested on running it this year. Thanks to AG and the others for the previous polls and I am delighted to take an ILM institution over.
So here goes:

This will be an all-metal poll, anything metal is welcome. I will try to be less elitist and more inclusive than previous AG metal polls, so bring all your metal to the table. Swans are IN as will Alt-Metal be, if nominated of course.
I'm going to put a cap of 20 nominations per poster. Quality not quantity is the name of the game.
In the same spirit as the big poll, we are going to have a much shorter rollout. This poll is about the best of this year's metal, it is not some AG-style Scottish socialist experiment where every record gets a participation trophy! :-)
Suspense is important for rollouts IMO. Full results will be posted after the #1 is announced.
If need be the rules will be relaxed on the last day to allow further nominations of any important missed out albums.

Nominations will close at 7pm EST on Friday, December 21st 2012 (that's midnight for the Britishes and 4pm for our friends on the left coast of the US). So we can allow several weeks for the voting and discovery process. This polls results must roll out before the big poll. Voting must finish by January 11th and the rollout must finish before January 19th.

Thanks for doing this. I don't think, however, that limiting ballots to 20 somehow increases quality. It'll simply exclude more interesting choices from making the top 100, making the results more predictable. I'd like to think part of the point of our ILM polls is to show that there are definitely more than 20 quality metal albums every year. Just my HO, I am grateful that someone could step up and do this.

That is the way the big proper EOY poll works so I am following that successful template and also there will not be anywhere near a top 100 rollout. Quality not Quantity is my motto. I was thinking of having ballots with a max of 10 with no minimum which P&J uses. But I may change that to 15 or even 20 when time comes to vote.

DON'T START BITCHING ABOUT HOW THIS IS BEING DONE. All the complaints and crying is why others threw in the towel in the fist place. If you wanted done a certain way, you should've done it yourself. Let em do it how they want and be grateful its even being done at all..

I'm with SeanWayne - no complaints about rules, formats, etc. should be tolerated from anyone. They're all stated up top and they fucking stand. If you don't like them, don't participate - end of story.

FNB wasn't rude. Everyone can have their say; but they don't have the final say. AG's rules caused too many arguments. I feel his poll was too large and and too many rules and tbqh elitist and obsessed with cool and tried too hard to pimp underground metal which most people were not interested at the expense of 'popular metal'. Hence all the arguments. Afaiac its all metal and should be free to be nominated but smaller nominations also means only the best will be nominated not 3000 albums 1 person got sent by pr men.
The poll from now on is to simply highlight the crème de la crème of 2012 Metal releases. There are not 100 releases that match that. There is not 50 either. One could argue there's barely a handful of releases a year that are truly great. 20 votes is more than enough and I am seriously considering 10 votes like P&J as if its good enough for them (It shall not be more than 20). Voting should not be something you labor over trying to fulfill minimum quotas. More will vote if we have a smaller nominations pool and smaller ballot and the countdown will be much more exciting with a far smaller rollout. After all the full results will still be posted at the en for those who are inclined to check out lower reaches. There is a good reason albums don't get lots of votes so why waste time on them?
Many argued for this and its time to show how much better it will be.
Would be mucho healthier if albums were discussed than rules as the rules wont be changed.

Don't think any of these are duplicates, but I apologize if I missed any while searching. (Also, feel free to disqualify Devil's Blood if you want, but it came out in the U.S. in 2012. It's not like I really love it that much anyway, so no great loss if it doesn't make the cut.)

Are we doing reissues? Because I think that Coven record is one, as great as it is.

It sort of is, if super limited vinyl private pressings in 1987 count as initial issues. (Pagan Altar, which Mordy nominated above, is at least sort of one too, right? Recorded 1978.) Seems like a grey area to me, but disqualify if necessary.

Everyone happy with just doing a maximum of 10 votes like with Pazz & Jop? Makes it far easier to knock up a list and everyone will only vote the very best rather than 50 albums they heard once.

I'd much rather list more -- like somebody else said above, more votes makes these polls more interesting, not less, and I've heard my favorite 30 albums this year way more than once -- but then again I'm not the one doing the tabulating. So I can live it.

15 or 20 then as anymore would dilute the quality imo. The poll is to decide this years favorite metal albums on ILM. I.e. voting for albums you already know and rate highly.

Not sure how I missed that one first time around.

Seandalai will be doing the counting up votes dealio (thank ye kindly) and has suggested, in his communications with the new management team, ending the voting period a week or so earlier in order to influence some late voters in the proper ILM poll into voting some metal from this list. One assumes that will be A-OK with the majority of y'all? It will mean voting will end on Friday January 4th 2013 with roll-out commencing on the Monday. With voting opening this weekend it will give everyone time before Christmas as well as a few days into the new year for the stragglers. With smaller ballots than the past I do not foresee any problems especially as your favorite albums will have formed over the year. I fail to see how an album heard in nominating period could be a favorite or best of the year like what AG insisted on in previous polls. As we stated earlier the point of the poll is to decide on the BEST hard rock/metal albums of 2012 not a list of every album released. A separate list thread could be started for that.
I couldn't start nominations earlier because I had not got a reply from AG initially as the web-mail went to his spam folder. Luckily he found it and got back to us. So thanks to AG for that.

Also anything that was released for the 1st time in the US in 2012 is eligible. So The Devil's Blood album xhuxx nominated is added and so will other US releases from 2012 if there are any, and of course get nominated.

I think the question in that case is – you're cool with something that placed on last year's poll placing in this one?

My answer would be if you don't want it in the poll then don't vote for it but those who do can. What if you didn't vote for something last year as it wasn't out in the US? Not everyone lives in Europe or illegally downloads. I don't know what won last year but its highly unlikely it falls under this category. xhuxx nominated an album and it's up to individuals whether they vote for it or other US 2012 releases or not.

xhuxx can always withdraw his nomination but someone else will probably just nominate it.

I'll leave it up to you guys. It won't make my Top 20 anyway, so whatever you decide is fine. But I'm not sure why placing in two separate years would be a problem, if it got released in two different places and people therefore heard it for the first time in both years. (That's happened numerous times in Pazz & Jop, where literal release dates haven't even been a mandate since 1979 or 1980.)

Trying to keep rules to a minimum really. Voting will sort out any issues and I strongly believe the previous system of vetoes led to too many problems.

How Scott Walker? unlikely to have guitar riffs I'd imagine. Mono and Gybe are as guitar heavy as anything on Kerrang list so that's fine especially as no-one has to vote for them if they feel it shouldn't count.

Remember this is a non-elitist poll compared to previous polls. Lets be more open-minded and unafraid of less hip more mainstream albums.

What about pop-punk? Green Day and other bands like them were on the Kerrang! list and made it into the nominations spreadsheet... where do we stand on that?

Liars, black bananas and hexvessel aren't metal. The new mono is basically a neoclassical CD, although I don't really care if you include it or not. It's not so much a matter of being elitist or mainstream, more a matter of having things on the list that just don't fit the genre.

And it isn't a matter of serious voters voting for those albums, and more that if there are things that trolls can vote for to screw up the poll, they will vote for them.

That's why I didn't nominate Goatpenis this year.

I got the Deiphago album through the post finally. Came as a rather splendid picture disc with brilliant artwork, an iron-on patch and a CD. Music sounds like someone yelling "SATAAAAAAAAAN" while throwing cutlery down the stairs.

Looking at previous polls now and they got between 80-90 ballots ,with the relaxation of rules this time I anticipate getting nearer 100. That would mean, along with shortening the roll-out from 125 ,trolls would be wasting their time plus trolls have never been a problem in any ILM 'email' Poll before. Any obvious troll ballots could be easily discounted as on the voting form they have to provide their ilx name.

I still think we should consider removing Green Day.
