yebbut "But Seriously" had been number one for months on end before that, believe me - i'm sure i remember hearing Gary Davies announce those 1990 album charts for the first time. on Saturday the Daily Telegraph (which of course i didn't actually read) had a big thing on its front page about "the young people who disagree with their liberal parents" or something like that - i suspect this is what Bunged Out is referring to.

as for Keane, they're merely another example of the ongoing tendency - in the 60s, the vast bulk of British pop music came from the south-east and the West Coast Main Line corridor, whereas now it's become so central to the culture, and the Americosceptic heartlands of wariness of its influence (both Old Tory and Old Labour) have been so systematically eroded, that you get people like Keane, who in the post-war years would have been Young Conservative bank clerks, choosing pop music as just another career (the idea of a band from Battle, Sussex getting to number three in 1966 would have been completely unthinkable, Troggs and Dave Dee notwithstanding). pop music is just *there* now, so they don't think what they're doing is in any way *significant* (compare to, say, Reg Presley's "this kind of feeling could move a nation"; *he knew*) - the sound of "Somewhere Only We Know" is the sound of a cultural form completely immersed in the fabric in a way unthinkable even ten years ago, saying nothing and being nothing.

the tedium of bands like that i would call "Wienerisation", after the man who did most to encourage ideological loathing of the conservative middle classes' wariness of pop culture and thus allow pop music to slip further and further into the background and have less and less *drama* and *impact* to it. Keane are merely a sociological aftereffect; they mean nothing in themselves, and they wouldn't pretend to, but their existence and doubtless massive future success says a lot. born in the Thatcher years, they can't remember a time when conservatism - even in Sussex market towns - wasn't merely another flavour of the Coca-Cola culture / McCulture (whatever you want to say), and therefore they see it as perfectly natural for the most conservative dullards to make a career out of pop music. what Lostprophets are to the miners' strike, they are to the sackings of Lord Carrington, Francis Pym et al. can you imagine the sort of people who like "Somewhere Only We Know" thinking much for themselves? i can't. at least Chris Martin is politically dead right in most of his beliefs. Keane are *nothing*.

weird...one of the first things i thought of when the saville story broke was the dudes in bands from this (or closely related) scenes who used to sleep with my school friends when i was 16/17. at the time i didn't think much of it (some jealously i guess) but as i've got older i realised how creepy it was that these dudes in their mid-to-late 20s were sleeping with girls still in school. i always been unsure whether it was actually a case of being predatory or just being unable to grow up and relate to girls their own age. i think for many it was probably the latter but this lostprophets dude sounds like a real dirtbag.

jesus christ, some of the details in report are reminiscent of A Serbian Film

deX! (DJP), Tuesday, 26 November 2013 15:04 (twelve years ago)

c-man of Total Sci-Fi in a negative review took issue with the film-makers' statements that their movie says something about the politics of Serbia, writing, "if you want to learn about Serbia, chances are, you won't be watching a movie whose main claim to fame is that a man rapes a newborn baby", before concluding that "Srdjan Spasojevic will go to his grave being known as the guy who filmed a grown man having sex with a baby. And that's something that – despite all of the money, attention and champagne parties at Cannes – I would never want on my conscience. Good luck to him in regaining some humanity."[48]

Idk Nakh, protective custody is all very well and good but it tends to work best when none of the other inmates are actually certain what the vulnerable inmates are in for. No chance of that here, every Cat A and B prisoner in the country is going to be waiting to see where this excrescence shows up.

Obviously he'll be very heavily protected but this is just such a visceral case. Remains to be seen how much cover the prison staff will actually offer him.

Tbh the women are probably gonna have it as bad, if not worse. Can't be many worse places to be than a high Category prison if you're a mother who's allowed your baby to be used as a sex toy.

Mark G, Wednesday, 27 November 2013 08:57 (twelve years ago)

As Watkins faces a lengthy jail term:

His distraught family described how online porn turned a ‘happy normal lad from the Valleys’ into a paedophile who ‘will be remembered like Jimmy Savile’.

A Skanger Barkley (nakhchivan), Wednesday, 27 November 2013 10:23 (twelve years ago)

how could a paedophile ever come from the valleys, or any other rural area? i mean they are more honest places than london, their food products taste better and you can trust their internet more. it's just so shocking.

Legitimate space tale (LocalGarda), Wednesday, 27 November 2013 10:26 (twelve years ago)

Still amazed that any paedophile would use the phrase 'Ifuckkids' to password protect their computer full of child porn. Wonder how long it took GCHQ to crack that one.

it does seem a bit hard to say whether the police are to blame. like the mail's line is basically "people have been saying he's a paedo for years". let's just use that to arrest people.

Legitimate space tale (LocalGarda), Wednesday, 27 November 2013 10:47 (twelve years ago)

there is probably some via media to be found between arresting everyone ever and doing due diligence on a public figure who left a trail of evidence all over the place

A Skanger Barkley (nakhchivan), Wednesday, 27 November 2013 10:49 (twelve years ago)

look forward to the exculpatory police complaints report anyway

A Skanger Barkley (nakhchivan), Wednesday, 27 November 2013 10:49 (twelve years ago)

tricky enough, like, in the case of the above woman, do they start actually investigating him based on someone saying that he "said" he was a paedophile. it's a pretty serious thing to start looking into. she could be lying. i mean, i dunno how many paedos there are who don't actively commit crimes either.

i mean i guess it comes down to the question of whether the police today are vigilant enough about paedophilia. don't know the answer to that.

Legitimate space tale (LocalGarda), Wednesday, 27 November 2013 10:53 (twelve years ago)

Thomas K Amphong (Tom D.), Wednesday, 27 November 2013 10:58 (twelve years ago)

i would have thought that reports from a girlfriend would count as reasonable suspicion on which to investigate him?

space bl00ps (NickB), Wednesday, 27 November 2013 11:00 (twelve years ago)

The police almost certainly didn't take his ex's claims seriously because we know they've waved aside multiple other cases in the past, but we don't know yet whether any of the victims reported him to the police or social services until last year. The climate has changed a lot post-Saville and I'd guess victims are more likely to come forward now even the perpetrator is famous and has exerted a lot of threatening aggression.

Watkins must have been deluding himself if he thought his status made him untouchable, he's a million miles away from being a dominant public figure like Saville was.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 27 November 2013 11:01 (twelve years ago)

the Shearer of simulated snowsex etc. (Dwight Yorke), Wednesday, 27 November 2013 12:09 (twelve years ago)

Well, there is an interview from 2010 with him here where he says

“I’ve taken down all the rules in my life. It’s hard to talk about this without sounding like a fucking wanker, but I had an epiphany, where I wanted to get a different mind-set for this album, because it needed to be different. Now I could hypothetically think about what it would be like to be in that mind-set or I could just be like ‘Fuck it’ and go nuts. But then I was like ‘Well, I can’t do that because I don’t do this and I don’t do that’… because I’m supposed to be straight-edge. With the whole straight-edge thing, I did everything when I was a kid, and it was wicked, but I just couldn’t really be bothered doing it. But at this point I realised my defences had become my own restrictions, like the cage you build around you to keep you safe became the cage that kept you in. I was the one that put those defences there, and they’re no longer relevant because I’ve grown up. it’s not like I’m a kid being restless. I’m just exploring stuff. The minute I thought I couldn’t do this because people know me as this straight-edge guy, that’s when I knew it had to change.”

and it probably seemed like he was talking about drugs at the time but turns out he meant fucking babies.

you could maybe debate whether the sexual attraction was towards the infants or towards the fact of deviancy itself but who gives a shit when the end result is the same? in the same way, his own rationale as to why he did it is irrelevant - the crimes occured, how he decides to distance himself from his own actions is of no interest to anybody else

http://www.metalhammer.co.uk/news/ian-watkins-talks-about-that-photo/

any speculated that the photo was either not Watkins or had been faked. Here’s what Ian told us…

Hammer: Have you done any interviews since your picture came out?
Ian: It’s good innit?
Hammer: It’s amazing, it’s our screensaver
Ian: if you’ve done that it must be really pixelated… or have you tiled it?
Hammer: we’re going to have it as an animated gif.
Ian: already been done.
Hammer: who did that?
Ian: I did it
Hammer: what’s the story behind it?
[Ian does the zipping his lip gesture]
Ian: I do have a first in graphic design which is essentially PhotoShop… (pause) yyyeeeeessss.
Hammer: is that all you’re saying?
Ian: that’s all I’m saying. I was happy with it. And ultimately if you trace everything back to the source, it’s gotta come from somewhere hasn’t it? I got my shit locked down like a master, so nothing’s getting leaked. It worked better than I ever could have imagined and the fact that Perez picked it up and stuff is amazing.

Was the timing of Cameron's ridiculously over the top internet filter announcement planned in advance to coincide with this?

His distraught family described how online porn turned a ‘happy normal lad from the Valleys’ into a paedophile

Which makes me think they want everyone to go: "If only there was a way for governments to protect the general public by blocking all kinds of online porn..."

Gary Glitter's second album is a different beast from the retro-oriented Glitter: this time the material is predominately original and many of the tunes have a harder, funkier edge to them (example: "Come on, Come in, Get On" has enough distortion on it to qualify as heavy metal). The album's best songs are the ones that became big pop-chart hits in England: "Do You Wanna Touch Me (Oh Yeah)" is a surprisingly lusty mid-tempo slice of glam that was later successfully covered by Joan Jett and "Hello, Hello, I'm Back Again" combines a double-time beat with call and response vocal performance to create a truly infectious single. The album also features one of Glitter's best non-single tracks in "Sidewalk Sinner," a cult favorite that speeds up Glitter's traditional glam beat and adds some surprisingly funky rhythms into the mix. The problem with Touch Me is that the remainder of the album tracks aren't quite as solid as these highlights.

Hello, Hello I'm Back Again! 3:20 $0.99
Sidewalk Sinner 2:32 $0.99
Didn't I Do It Right 3:21 $0.99
Lonely Boy 3:30 $0.99
Hold On to What You Got 3:16 $0.99
I.O.U. 3:08 $0.99
Do You Wanna Touch Me? (Oh Yeah!)3:18 $0.99
Come On, Come In, Get On 2:32 $0.99
Happy Birthday 2:58 $0.99
Hard On Me 2:17 $0.99
To Know You Is to Love You 2:51 $0.99
Money Honey 3:03 $0.99
I Would If I Could But I Can't 2:50 $0.99
Always Yours 3:25 $0.99
I'm Right, You're Wrong, I Win 2:40 $0.99

From NME.com

In February, the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) launched an investigation into whether South Wales Police acted quickly enough after being tipped off about Watkins. In a new statement issued to NME today (November 27), the IPCC has given more details about the nature of the investigation, revealing that the case is centred around the actions of one officer, who is also being investigated in another case where it is alleged that he failed to act on an allegation that a 15-year-old girl had been raped.

The statement reads: "The IPCC investigation into whether or not South Wales Police failed to take appropriate and timely action in relation to information they were in receipt of in advance of Mr Watkins' subsequent arrest is ongoing. We are considering matters dating back to 2008.

"At this stage the investigation is focused on the actions of one officer, a detective sergeant who is also being investigated in another case where it is alleged he failed to act on an allegation that a 15-year-old girl had been raped. That remains ongoing.

"The detective sergeant has been served with gross misconduct notices advising him that his conduct is subject to investigation."

HMV's decision reflects the gravity of Watkins' crimes. It is unusual for a major retailer to entirely remove an artist's catalogue, even after a major conviction: HMV continue to sell records by Gary Glitter, Burzum and Charles Manson.

suspect "HMV's decision reflects their interest in sidestepping flaming-torch Twitter campaigns for the sake of a band who no-one is going to buy albums by anyway" might be more accurate

Such was the level of vitriol aimed at Watkins that earlier this week, entirely accidentally, the hashtag ianwatkinsisinnocent started trending on Twitter. In fact, no one had been tweeting his innocence: the hashtag was coined by fans a year ago, when he was first charged. It began trending because people searching Twitter for Ian Watkins found it coming up in their searches, and leapt in to condemn the coinage. Even as I've been writing this paragraph, a new tweet has appeared: "Did I just see a hashtag #IanWatkinsIsInnocent WTFFFFFFFFFFF"

Mark G, Sunday, 1 December 2013 13:49 (twelve years ago)

Don't want to do too much amateur analysis as the case is so fucked up.

However, I am wondering if the women giving him their children to abuse has something to do with a certain kind of fandom specific to LPs genre?

I was explaining to someone yesterday how LP weren't a 'fuck fuck fuck kill everyone with a gun' type of rock band (who you might 'expect' to be real sickos, maybe, whatever) but rather a 'Sometimes I feel so insecuuuuuuuuuuuure' type of rock band (and maybe to find the real sicko over in this genre instead was 'surprising', maybe, whatever).

Watkins, like a lot of lead singers in this genre – 'emo' is probably inaccurate but covers similar types - is supposed to be a 'voice' or 'leader' for the depressed fans, someone who understands them. That's a different relationship to the one where fans just think of their favourite band as 'cool' or 'great', right?

If this specific type of fandom exists, and these women had that relationship to him, maybe that's how he was able to convince them. It seems like it would be a magnet for vulnerable people.

This also requires adults to still be fans in a very teenage way, of course. But 'emo' (again not an accurate genre label but it's the closest I know to whatever LP are) is a scene that people stick with in quite a frighteningly serious way, well into adulthood

cardamon, Sunday, 1 December 2013 20:33 (twelve years ago)

"Don't want to do too much amateur analysis as the case is so fucked up."

should've ended your post there.

tell it to my arse (jim in glasgow), Sunday, 1 December 2013 20:43 (twelve years ago)

The other element to consider is that whereas in LP's heyday (which was 00-05, IIRC) in provincial British youth music culture there were two definite 'sides'. Numetal/pop punk/emo/similar, VS garage/hardcore/r'n'b/hip hop.

But then the numetal type stuff was very quickly killed off by arrival of Strokes type indie and lots of bands whose names started with 'The'. So the rough aesthetic constellation that Lostprophets were part of suddenly shrunk to a footnote. British nu-metal being an offshoot of a big American trend, that just got chucked out in favour of a new one.

It's odd to notice that some people are still into nu-metal and emo in 2013: what if that scene's dwindled to a hard core of fans, who are the only people who would take LP/Watkins seriously? You've got the makings of a cult situation there – perhaps.

But like I said. Amateur analysis, and it all feels distasteful given the severity of the abuse. I'm leaving it here in case my ramblings about provincial British youth culture can get us any closer to working out how this kind of thing happens.

jim in glasgow, yeah you're right, but I wanted to say something more than just how terrible it all is. By all means point out idiocies in my posts – I don't offer the above with any kind of authority, just trying to make sense of it all.

cardamon, Sunday, 1 December 2013 20:45 (twelve years ago)

There are every year in Britain numerous cases of men persuading women to let them abuse their children. Most of them are not rock stars, or rich, or famous.

yeah but what about all of the landfill indie bands who don't try to rape babies, thus lending support to cardamon's theory

A Skanger Barkley (nakhchivan), Sunday, 1 December 2013 20:50 (twelve years ago)

But imagine being part of a scene even less valuable than landfill indie – that wd take some dedication and among these fans (besides a majority of totally healthy ppl who just really like a bygone genre of music increasingly cut off from current trends) one might expect to find some people who were so invested that it constitutes a vector for extremely abusive relationships with other, higher status, members of that scene

cardamon, Sunday, 1 December 2013 20:56 (twelve years ago)

There is a possible analogue with Polanski if you replace the world of one specific music fandom with the world of 'the film world': both men have positions of power and status, in a demi-monde isolated from the rest of society

cardamon, Sunday, 1 December 2013 21:05 (twelve years ago)

the codefendants in this place let him rape their children, why are you treating them like ingenues induced into transgressive behaviour rather than psychopaths in their own right?

Not attempting to downplay the latter part. But do we know what the balance was, between him and them, i.e, do we know yet to what extent he induced them? And again, say they needed no inducement and they are just that type of psychopath, how did they end up interacting with Watkins specifically, instead of the abuse happening in some other context

cardamon, Sunday, 1 December 2013 21:08 (twelve years ago)

if you analogize it with something as nebulous and wide as 'the film world' you lose whatever tendentious argument you had with respect to the specific dynamics of the provincial british emo-metal-trash scene

A Skanger Barkley (nakhchivan), Sunday, 1 December 2013 21:09 (twelve years ago)

Michael B, point me in the direction of some good studies of abusers and I will read them. I was under the impression that there's a fairly common pattern where, as I said, abusers 'have positions of power and status, in a demi-monde isolated from the rest of society'.

cardamon, Sunday, 1 December 2013 21:15 (twelve years ago)

seeking the cause of something that happens across all barriers of age, class, gender and sexuality in a specific socio-cultural milieu looks like a fool's errand. as to why people commit these crimes - it may have some interest to us if it could provide useful evidence in the search for means to prevent future crimes. beyond that, i think it's irrelevant why somebody chooses to abuse a child. it's not an act that admits of mitigation.

Noodle Vague, Sunday, 1 December 2013 21:18 (twelve years ago)

Do you see my posts itt as arguing for mitigation?

cardamon, Sunday, 1 December 2013 21:19 (twelve years ago)

I think that when we are confronted by the extreme fringes of human depravity (the subject of evil) it is natural to try and understand said events however clumsy, even if it helps no one but our own psychological relief. Cardamon: mine and our Arendt.

Mordy , Sunday, 1 December 2013 21:22 (twelve years ago)

yes, up to a point - trying to identify a milieu that makes abuse more likely to happen means saying some people have lower odds of not becoming abusers - but as i say, i don't think statistics bears that out at all.

Noodle Vague, Sunday, 1 December 2013 21:23 (twelve years ago)

i mean obviously if you want to help your own psychological relief go for it but i don't think causal accounts of criminality are v. fruitful in a broad sense

Noodle Vague, Sunday, 1 December 2013 21:34 (twelve years ago)

yes, up to a point - trying to identify a milieu

Well, fwiw, what my posts were trying to look at was not the milieu so much as the power relationships

that makes abuse more likely to happen means saying some people have lower odds of not becoming abusers - but as i say, i don't think statistics bears that out at all.

Not what I intended to say, although if it looked like I was saying that, fair enough, glad ppl are calling it out.

Although if, again, we were talking about Charles Manson, I don't think identifying what parts of the world he moved in helped him to commit his crimes, would 'mean saying' that such crimes could only happen within the part of the hippy culture he inhabited. Likewise with Polanski, who had his enablers and powerful defenders in the film world, I don't think that would mean saying that only in the film world could such crimes have been committed. Or if we're talking about abusers operating in the military, or children's homes, or any other site of abuse. There's nothing there, in the specific location of a crime, that should make us comfortable or complacent because we move in a different world

cardamon, Sunday, 1 December 2013 21:36 (twelve years ago)

He denied being a paedophile and told the caller he only pleaded guilty to avoid a trial.

The musician held more computer data than the police force who investigated his evil crimes, it was claimed.

Detective Chief Inspector Peter Doyle, who led the investigation, said: "Watkins' data storage size was 27 terabytes - which is five times the size of South Wales Police systems in storage capacity.

"Not all of it was illegal material, but if you need 27 terabytes then you're clearly into that kind of world."

Uncompressed 24-bit 96KHz stereo audio takes up 2GB per hour, which means he could store 13,500 hours of it on his 27 terabyte drives.

Even allowing for using 100 stereo tracks of audio per song (haha) and assuming each song was five minutes long, that means he still would've had space for 1,620 songs - about three times as many as Dylan's ever written.

Don't think he's gonna be releasing any of those tracks anytime soon though.

He was emphatic as he was growing up through his teenage years that he would never drink, never do drugs. That’s what he told us.

‘Whether that was to reassure us as parents, I don’t know. But obviously something went wrong in later years. I think it coincided with being in the American scene.

‘He started giving interviews and there were concerns that perhaps he was just trying to shock, or create an impression or trying to push boundaries to reinvent himself and the band.’

Watkins’ younger brother Daniel, 24, added: ‘They were all teetotal. We have no idea what happened. That was when they decided to base themselves in LA, which is obviously a totally different culture to the South Wales valleys.’

i wd imagine that there will still be the possibility of some kind of contact, at some point, with their birth parents

also i think there are ethical questions about deliberately withholding that kind of information from people as they become adults

the five people you meet in Hedon (Noodle Vague), Thursday, 19 December 2013 01:19 (twelve years ago)

xxxpost - so it's America's fault?

Why does the public crave this kind of shallow reassurance every time? It's some stranger's fault, he wasn't one of us, the rest of us are still normal, we're all safe again, all of which are just not true, but still have to be repeated constantly.

StanM, Thursday, 19 December 2013 01:24 (twelve years ago)

i don't know what's recommended in cases such as this, but i would say let the birth mothers live the rest of their lives not knowing where their children are and withhold the info. that may not be "ethical" i guess but i'm not sure what good can come from the other option.

christmas candy bar (al leong), Thursday, 19 December 2013 01:25 (twelve years ago)

that's the only ethical option in these circumstances

A Skanger Barkley (nakhchivan), Thursday, 19 December 2013 01:26 (twelve years ago)

it's not even from the perspective of the birth mother's rights as far as i understand it. people have a legal right to be made aware that they're adopted iirc. i don't think this means automatically telling them the circumstances in which they were removed from their parent tho.

the five people you meet in Hedon (Noodle Vague), Thursday, 19 December 2013 01:30 (twelve years ago)

altho since people who discover they've been adopted often want to try and contact their birth parents i wd imagine some explanation might have to be offered at that point

A Skanger Barkley (nakhchivan), Thursday, 19 December 2013 01:34 (twelve years ago)

i think the right to know where you come from outweighs any attempt by well-meaning authorities to protect you from that information. fully accept that this is a really difficult call.

the five people you meet in Hedon (Noodle Vague), Thursday, 19 December 2013 01:35 (twelve years ago)

the children's right to know that footage exists of them being subjected to an attempted rape with their birth parents as accomplices

A Skanger Barkley (nakhchivan), Thursday, 19 December 2013 01:38 (twelve years ago)

i think there's the right to know and there's the fact that this information would be life-destroying. i mean at a certain age yes they would ask (if they know.) and at what age would one be legally obligated to tell them if they ask?

christmas candy bar (al leong), Thursday, 19 December 2013 01:39 (twelve years ago)

A Skanger Barkley (nakhchivan), Thursday, 19 December 2013 01:40 (twelve years ago)

al i think in the UK adoptees are legally informed at 18 if they haven't already been told.

nakh yeah the truth may be horrible but faced with a choice between 2 unknowables, i.e. how damaging it wd be to find out about the horrible shit that's been done to you in infancy vs how damaging it wd be to have the facts of your birth obscured and hidden from you, my instinct is to go with the choice that doesn't involve systematic deception.

the five people you meet in Hedon (Noodle Vague), Thursday, 19 December 2013 01:44 (twelve years ago)

especially since the systematic deception route would entail the very real possibility that at some point not only would the victim find out about the abuse, but would find out in a context that potentially alienated them from adoptive parents with whom they'd had a loving and nurturing relationship

the five people you meet in Hedon (Noodle Vague), Thursday, 19 December 2013 01:46 (twelve years ago)

al i think in the UK adoptees are legally informed at 18 if they haven't already been told

not strictly true - adoptees have the right to access their birth certificates at 18 but aren't automatically informed. obv at some point in adulthood tho people usually need their birth documents.

read a bunch of interesting stuff about open and closed adoption systems. still believe that the system we have is the best of some terrible choices.

the five people you meet in Hedon (Noodle Vague), Thursday, 19 December 2013 02:30 (twelve years ago)

There's also the issue of where the children's fathers are in this and how much they know. I'm assuming totally absent, but if they even know these children exist then it's potentially another complication in keeping it all totally secret.

A photocopy from a magazine of child pornography was used as the cover of issue #2 of Pure which led to Sotos pleading guilty to possession of child pornography, receiving a suspended sentence.

Anyway, ancient history aside, saying they could get an album out of this is hardly the same as saying they glorified child abuse, is it?

i believe in clemency & forgiveness in 90% of cases where the law does not, especially where drugs and/or peer pressure are involved

this scumfuck deserves neither & the world may do unto him as it chooses imo. seems something of a scandal and a shame that it has been denied such a direct crack at him. obv ideally he would go to prison, face his own monstrosity and fall into the sort of torturous psychological mania that corporate entitlement and occultist rite aim to protect their progeny from as they go about their acts of brutal & repugnant supremacy

halber mensch halber keks (imago), Tuesday, 1 April 2014 00:19 (eleven years ago)

american criminal justice is a sewer though, some countries (although not the uk which has an unequal extradition treaty in favour of america) have refused to extradite crims there because of the likelihood of human rights violations, goole is correct in that judges should be more willing to query what happens to the people they imprison even if it's usually a privilege afforded only to the white & moneyed

Liquidators were unable to pay a small number of creditors, who were owed several thousand pounds.

A final creditors' meeting for Goonies Touring Ltd was held on the 17 December 2014 and the company was formally dissolved.

Watkins, 37, is still entitled to receive royalties and publishing fees for recordings, but cannot benefit from any earnings in prison.

The singer was also the sole director of dormant company Made in Hell Ltd, which has also been recently wound up.

The other former members of Lostprophets have been touring with their new band No Devotion after joining forces with American lead singer Geoff Rickly last year.

Joanne Mjadzelics: Ian Watkins' ex cleared over abuse images

Speaking through tears after the not guilty verdicts she said: "I shouldn't have even been here - just for doing the police's job that they couldn't be arsed to do."

Ms Mjadzelics reported Watkins to police and social services in 2008, 2009, 2011 and 2012 to raise the alarm over his child sex crimes.

But a court heard police refused to collect the phone and computer of Mjadzelics after she told them he had sent her indecent images of a "very young girl being raped".

Solomon Radley – Contributor

Well I’m loathe to do this – but the answer to this one comes from the philosophy of aesthetics. When someone asks “What does a work of art mean?” the least problematic answer is “Whatever the artist intended it to mean.” That’s why Duchamp’s ‘Fountain’ isn’t just a urinal, and it’s why John Cage’s ‘4’33”’ is a piece of music, rather than a pretentious four-minute exercise in pointlessness.

It follows that if an artist intends something to be part of a piece of art, it becomes part of that piece of art. What’s more, in some cases you’ll find that the personal lives of a band’s members are part of the art in an even more direct way – for example, The Wonder Years took Soupy’s most personal thoughts and anxieties and made it the subject matter of their last three albums.

If something’s not actually part of an artwork, it shouldn’t really colour your opinion of that art. So if an artist didn’t intend their personal life to be part of the music, you shouldn’t really judge the music by their life ‘off record/stage’.

But that’s the problem – what Ian Watkins allegedly did shouldn’t affect what you think of their songs, but it does. So you can’t help but feel sorry for the rest of Lostprophets now they’ve been forced to call it a day because the charges against him dragged the band’s name through the mud.

I routinely find I enjoy the personalities behind my favourite music as much as the music itself. That’s why I love Fat Mike, Tyler, The Creator and Ke$ha. And why shouldn’t I? Maybe a better definition of the meaning of a piece of art would be “Whatever the listener derives from it”.

To hell with all the complicated philosophical implications – that best-describes the meaning I grasp when listening to music, so I’m sticking with it. It also explains why I can’t listen to ‘Shinobi Vs. Dragon Ninja’ anymore without feeling a shade guilty.

had to check to see if these guys ever played the Warped tour, because I'm pretty sure that's a phrase they make bands practice repeating before playing that now

Recommendations?

'Other bands are available'

Mark G, Tuesday, 25 April 2017 05:54 (eight years ago)

Ultimately, the Lostprophets produced The Betrayed by themselves at the Los Angeles home of the band's bassist, Stuart Richardson, between 2008 and 2009. Over the course of this multi-year recording process, they scrapped a lot of material, ultimately selecting a dozen songs for the 45-minute album. The first half of the album is uniformly excellent, in particular the full-throttle rockers "Dstryr/Dstryr," "It's Not the End of the World, But I Can See It from Here," and "Next Stop, Atro City." Though less invigorating and perhaps too pop-oriented for some fans, the U2-esque "Where We Belong" and the ska lilt of "For He's a Jolly Good Felon" are also first-rate.

This didn't age well!
