The voting procedure is the same as last year. You can vote for up to 25 albums and up to 25 tracks, one item per line in the appropriate box. Please copy each line directly from the nominations lists (linked below); do not number your ballot. You can choose one of three ballot types, which determine how points are allocated to each item you vote for:

(1) Weighted: The first item on your ballot receives 50 points, the second receives 48 points, and so on, until the 25th item receives 2 points.
(2) Unweighted: Each item on your ballot receives 26 points.
(3) Mixed: To submit a mixed ballot, you must divide your ballot in two with an extra blank line. The upper portion of the ballot will be treated as weighted, with the first item receiving 50 points, and so on. The lower portion will be treated as unweighted, in that all items will receive the same number of points. The score allocated to items in the unweighted portion is calculated as 26 minus the number of items in the weighted portion (this is so that any weighted, unweighted or mixed ballot consisting of 25 items will allocate a total of exactly 650 points).

@Moka: We're lenient on things that nobody heard first time round, "year of impact" etc. If you don't feel they're appropriate, don't vote for them (I tend not to).

Looks like about 70% of nominated tracks are on Spotify. If there's something that's not there and you're afraid might get ignored, post a Youtube or w/e on the campaigning thread.

My ballots might take a minute. On the whole, there was less I liked as much in 2012 as I liked in 2011, but perhaps there was a broader swath of music I enjoyed? Harder to cull when that's the case.

Thanks for warning us about Spotify, lex. I was under the impression it had every piece of music ever recorded.

Working on my ballot at the moment. Albums list was easy to do but the tracks list is a lot harder this year. I'm thinking of keeping it to just one track per artist but that's really hard when it comes to Miguel, Saint Etienne and Hot Chip.

Yeah there isn't any way to set up automatic confirmations on Google. I did get your ballot though.

Basically, if you see the "thank you for voting" screen after submitting your ballot (or whatever it says, I haven't voted yet), it means your ballot has been added to the spreadsheet. As always, it's not a bad idea to keep a copy of you ballot in a txt file or something on your own pc.

It's just a feeling I have, with no tangible evidence, but I think there was more talk about EOY polls and certain albums and on and on this year than in previous years and people may just be a little fatigued. Trying to narrow down the tracks almost wiped me out. I've spent the last few weeks going through the Spotify playlist. I found so many great songs I would have just never heard, a lot of great electronic music in particular.

Albums was a lot easier, all I had to do was make room for the Melody's Echo Chamber album which I hadn't heard until the nominations thread. Thanks to whoever nominated that album as it's become my latest obsession.

Let's Go Eat the Factory is not great but i like Class Clown Spots a UFO a lot and it would have made the bottom of my ballot - it does the best job of the 3 at recapturing some of the 'oldschool' GBV sound and feel i think. The Bears For Lunch is fine too and other people seem to like that one the most but i will rep for Class Clown.

So who did unweighted and why? I followed my pattern from last year of weighting my album picks but unweighted my tracks. mainly because my tracks ballot is generally always singles I've heard and liked during the course of the year but don't have enough emotional investment to rank them.

Also my albums were heavily dominated by rock, metal and indie folk stuff while the tracks were dominated by pop, electronic and top 40 stuff.

Huh, so when you upload a file with the same name as an existing one on Google, it doesn't automatically replace the old one.

Similar to pandemic, I weighted my top 4 in both categories and unweighted the rest. It just happened to be 4 for me in both, but it could've been 3 in one and 9 in the other. It felt like giving "bonus points" to my absolute favorites and then spreading the love equally among all the other things I liked.

Last year, we were in the 120~ range ballotwise, and I can't remember if the year before was slightly higher or lower. Enthusiasm seemed a little less this year, so hitting the 100 ballot threshold is a big deal imo.

also, for the first time, i submitted a mixed Albums list. could only come up with a Top 7 for 2013. last year and every year before that since about 12 i ranked all 25+.

the Carly Rae album did way better on Pazz & Jop than i would've expected (#40) so i wouldn't be surprised if it did that well or even better on ilx. never understood the point of nominating/voting for album tracks without any strong consensus, though.

I meant to nominate "Sing About Me..." during the last day when I uncapped noms limits, but forgot. No one else picked up my slack, though, so it probably wouldn't have done all that well in the end.

i know i pick this nit every year but seriously: that album is a lock for top 3, could even be #1, everyone knows all the songs on it are good/great, what's even the point of trying to get any one of them far up on the tracks poll?

Sometimes I think we should institute a "no more than three songs from one album" nominations limit or something so as to prevent vote splitting (the idea that any Carly track deserves to beat "Call Me Maybe" is ridic, even though some days I like "This Kiss" and/or "Curiosity" more), but OTOH maybe that vote-splitting helps prevent the tracks list just replicating the albums list as happens with so many non ILM polls.

I don't know if this has ever been raised, but it occurred to me that I might've preferred to have submitted ballots where some selections were on one unranked tier, and the rest were on another (lower) unranked tier. For my albums, I ranked my 1-10 only because I wanted to keep them separate from 11-25, but I didn't necessarily feel strongly about the order.

Kinda regret not nominating Frank Ocean's "Sweet Life," but probably no one loves it as much as I do.

(I remember dismissals having to do with it being too Stevie Wonder-ish. Damn, though.)

Re the deep cuts on popular albums thing, I agree it's a bit pointless voting for these if you're gonna vote for the album too. But this year there were a few such records that I genuinely thought were patchy so didn't want to vote for. The CRJ album is one - or at least the bonus tracks on the deluxe edition were generally the best ones, not counting "Call Me Maybe". I don't see a problem in nominating and voting for bonus tracks, especially if that draws ppl's attention to songs they may not have heard.
