Interesting guy and article even if I don't like Rihanna's "Diamonds" that he co-wrote

Mikkel S. Eriksen, part of the songwriting team Stargate, said that Mr. Blanco, as a producer, always reaches for unexpected sounds. On “Diamonds,” the Rihanna hit he wrote with Stargate, he took a snippet of Mr. Eriksen’s singing, altered the sound electronically to make it dirtier, then used that timbre, manipulated with audio software, to create ghostly accompaniment lines. “His technique is somewhat unorthodox,” Mr. Eriksen said, “as he almost never plays the keyboards but throws in weird samples and alters them to the right pitch to go with the song.”

He's busy with Maroon 5 now. Guessing they won't be listening to those Sting and Police records that Bruno Mars is addicted to, but who knows.

curmudgeon, Monday, 7 January 2013 05:21 (thirteen years ago)

still the most telling benny blanco anecdote: http://web.archive.org/web/20100807001855/http://alexkazemi.com/2010/07/listensingle-review-teenage-dream-katy-perry/

katherine, Monday, 7 January 2013 07:27 (thirteen years ago)

(because this guy is the most reliable predictor of a song being not-great. which comes off awfully like a vendetta I realize but his discography is this rogues gallery of stuff that is _not good_. or if it is, he's either not the lead producer or being heavily, recognizably influenced by someone like rico love or [as much as it pains me to say it] fucking poser.)

katherine, Monday, 7 January 2013 07:36 (thirteen years ago)

...POSNER. although there are more inaccurate typos

katherine, Monday, 7 January 2013 07:37 (thirteen years ago)

Mr. Blanco, whose real surname is Levin, never expected to become a pop tunesmith. Growing up in Reston, Va., he fell in love with hip-hop, he said, when he bought a Nas cassette at the age of 5.

what kinda bullshit is this, dude was 6 when Illmatic came out and even that's still pretty implausible

Never cared much for Tegan and Sara, but The Line Of Best Fit's plug of the new single, deeming it "an epic Taylor Swift covering Kate Bush pop ballad", worked like a charm for me (even if I don't agree with the KB-part of that statement). Lovely song:

http://www.thelineofbestfit.com/new-music/blog/listen-tegan-and-sara-i-was-a-fool-116066

teledyldonix, Saturday, 23 February 2013 21:44 (thirteen years ago)

I kept waiting for Requiem Solution to get overtly "Kleerup-y" and it never did. Nice enough, but disappointing considering the collaborative partners involved.

that song is everywhere

i like to pretend that the line in the chorus is "ciara's got a plan for you"

teledyldonix, Wednesday, 27 March 2013 17:14 (thirteen years ago)

That's what I hear the line as, so it's easy to pretend, in the unlikely event I don't just turn the TV/radio off when it comes on.

boxedjoy, Wednesday, 27 March 2013 17:16 (thirteen years ago)

katherine, Thursday, 28 March 2013 00:03 (thirteen years ago)

This may be my favourite song of the year so far. The lyrics instantly reminded me of Ke$ha's "Tik Tok" (I wouldn't be surprised it it's an intentional reference), but once the chorus sets in it's clear this is about heartbreak, not fun. The whole think is incredibly sad and euphoric at the same time.

Just came across this site:
http://kworb.net/radio/

Lots of iTunes and U.S. radio airplay charts, courtesy some dude in the Netherlands. Anyone seen this before, or know where this guy is getting his info?

jaymc, Monday, 29 April 2013 16:49 (twelve years ago)

yeah. he knows what he's doing. i'm not as familiar with the radio lists on that site, but the itunes data comes from the 'popularity' measures that itunes spits out for songs. i believe his program at one point would actually calculate the relative lengths of the 'popularity bars' (since they were displayed graphically on the program if you had a certain option activated) then combine the ones that applied to different versions of the same song, then rank the results. even doing this and applying the projected sales of the highest seller, he'd be able to predict the sales of the top-selling songs each week surprisingly accurately. he then updated the program to take the exact numerical data directly from the itunes feed somehow, which made it even better. at some point i think itunes started reporting popularity to less precision than it used to, which significantly upset the predictive power of his program in terms of sales, but it can still usefully predict the relative ranks of digital songs, e.g. on billboard's hot digital songs chart.

there are a few weird things about it -- for instance his 'worldwide' one (the one you reach by clicking the 'songs' tab -- applies an equal weight to all countries' itunes stores, even the ones that are barely used at all. but the ones for individual countries' itunes stores are a good reference if you want to look at a momentary snapshot of what is selling.

dyl, Monday, 29 April 2013 18:02 (twelve years ago)

Huh, interesting. I came upon it because I was trying to figure out whether "Get Lucky" was being played by U.S. radio stations.

jaymc, Monday, 29 April 2013 19:07 (twelve years ago)

And the most interesting thing I learned from copying today's list and sorting it is that Chubby Checker has a new song that's been getting radio play.

MarkoP, Monday, 29 April 2013 20:06 (twelve years ago)

So should I care about Chris Mann (adult contemporary pop I guess) who apparently was on "The Voice" in 2012 and whose press release says he's influenced by Pavarotti and vintage Sinatra and is doing this:

This month sees the premiere of “A Mann For All Seasons,” Chris’ very own PBS special. Helmed by award-winning producer Ken Ehrlich, the show features special guest appearances by multi-platinum artist Martina McBride and Mindi Abair and is a re-creation of the Elvis Presley ’69 Comeback Special with Chris performing in a boxing ring on a Sony soundstage.

yes i think the paramore - paramore thread is full of people freaking out over it

dyl, Friday, 17 May 2013 07:50 (twelve years ago)

yeah there's a station in D.C. that used to be strictly hip-hop/R&B that last year flipped to kind of a hybrid pop format where they play the same stuff as before but every 4th song is something an urban station would never play like Maroon 5 or whatever. but half the time they pick on random songs that aren't actually on US top 40 radio, like "Wings" by Little Mix, and lately they're playing the hell out of "Crickets." makes me sad that Jeremih doesn't seem to have any idea what the hell he's doing with all his career potential right now.

utilizing my famously feline agility to seek managerial succor (forksclovetofu), Saturday, 18 May 2013 07:37 (twelve years ago)

it's a shame that Paramore can have a #1 album and a single as great as "Still Into You" but because it's not compatible with current trends in rock or pop radio, it basically hasn't been played on U.S. radio at all (and has only charted a little bit off of downloads/streams). maybe it'll be a different story if they release "Ain't It Fun" as a single.

trick paddy pollars (some dude), Saturday, 18 May 2013 11:34 (twelve years ago)

Not exactly my usual thing, but I think it does a nice job of building tension and switching things up in the course of the track.

Her album Vybirat' Chudo is listed as (US Version, 2013) on Spotify, which is interesting. It seems to be exactly the same as the Russian version, though, just without a couple of remixes.

Yes, her album is very good. It's great to see her picking up an international audience while not really deviating too far from a 'classic' Russian pop template.

Ⓓⓡ. (Johnny Fever), Saturday, 27 July 2013 01:33 (twelve years ago)

some dude, Saturday, 27 July 2013 01:40 (twelve years ago)

Yeah, I didn't look at her whole body of work. Just took a glance at her #1s.

There's a lot of movement in American Girl melodically, though. I'm so sick of verse and chorus melodies that do NOTHING. It's the Fruity Loops effect...when you write in blocks, the songs become so modular that you can take a verse out of one song and put it in another and no one will even notice.

Ⓓⓡ. (Johnny Fever), Saturday, 27 July 2013 01:47 (twelve years ago)

I'm finding "american girl" more hilarious with each listen. the fact that she looks older in the video feels like part of the joke. its like halfway between spring breakers and josie and the pussycats and "born in the usa".

two weeks pass...

Popjustice wrote an article last week saying how amazing the new V V Brown album is. I Just got round to checking it and whilst I'm not about to say it's the masterpiece they claimed it to be it is a bit of a shock, especially considering how completely average everything else she's done has been. I'd guess she's been listening to plenty of Grace Jones, iamamiwhoami and maybe that Barbara Panther album.

The lead single is quite brilliant, great production.

Just came here to post the Little Mix single. Best thing they've done by a long way. I really cannot stop listening to it right now.
