ah great, thanks for that one - figured it shouldn't have been too difficult but i don't know the artist or label

tho i see the label also has releases by kink, which makes kind of a sense because the track reminds me a lil of what kink did in his changes of life cover

I've made a mix including several tunes I discovered through bobbins threads of the last couple of years. The sound quality is a bit odd in places on the first track (due to me not totally understanding Ableton warp mode stuff) but it gets better after that. I'm not posting it on the DJ mixes thread because I'm far from being a DJ. Link here

I tend more towards vinyl than ableton for mixes but if you're using ableton what warp mode are you using?

personally I think i would go for repitch mode wherever possible (presuming your tracks are all reasonably close in terms of BPM). With this mode obviously if there are loads of transient markers everywhere you want rid of those as itll change pitch, so just set 1.0.0 at the first sound (or first kick if it doesnt work), then do warp as straight from there. it should get rid of all the transients, then look at 5.0.0 and if the kick isnt dead on 5 just drag it to 5, then do a loop between 1-5 and see if it sounds ok, then 33-37, 97-101, 193-197 or so and see if its kept things right the whole way thru

repitch mode, to me, is messing with the track the least and therefore is the way to go

Beats. My mate (who is hosting the mix for me) also suggested using repitch instead (but only aftered I'd made it). The thing is, the track where I notice oddness the most is the first track, which doesn't have any of those markers for irregular beats, and where the tempo was hardly shifted at all (from 123 down to 122) so I don't really understand why it sounds like that.

I'm still looking for the best way, too. I do the same things as you but always feel left behind.

If you can find a dj or person who has a very similar taste to yours, it can be really helpful. Than you can follow their recommendations/dj sets/charts.

follow djs and labels on soundcloud, look at what people put on mixes as they come up on various sites and look up the labels for tracks you like on discogs, etc. and then various blogs and RA

Anne Clark is on the new Kuniyuki record from Mule. In my opinion Mule has been pretty lacklustre in recent times but this one hits me. It's even got a Barnt remix.

Knox - Here (Tejada remix). Tejada remixes are flying out the door, I like this one. Sort of cheesy vocals.

Langenberg - Alto Seco, deep driving house on Two Birds. This builds really nicely.

Raudive - Traffic EP. Absolutely loving Oliver Ho in the last 12 months. This one sounds great next to Daniel Avery.

Considering how much Chris from there hates Blawan and loves Surgeon, I LOLed IRL when their collab project was announced. mnmls ssgs was a great blog (worth it for those Terre Thaemlitz pieces alone) and Chris is a good writer (and this mix is sick: http://secretthirteen.org/secret-thirteen-mix-047-chris-mnml-ssgs/) - I look forward to his new site, but he can get annoying with the challops.

It's kind of like the closest thing there is to an actual full-blown (quality-wise as well as stylistically) resumption (this feels like the best word for it) of Fabric 13 vibes.

60-90 minutes is best length for a mix i think though recently I've had some very long flights and found some real gems towards the end of a couple 4 hour Cleymoore mixes

i find with 4 hr ones i can play from where i left off and it doesn't ruin it too much. and then yeah an occasional long journey or whatever and you get the whole lot.

With mixes longer than 2 hours I do sometimes chop them up, I don't think anything is lost by sectioning mixes that are otherwise too long to practically hear in one go.

As someone that made a 16 hour long mix last summer, let me say that the 45 minute mix is a most underrated artform.

yeah but in ejeca/w&o's tracks it (along with other 90's elements) feels mandatory. it's like they were thinking "we're making a 90's style house track here. make sure all the elements are in check." they do it self consciously instead of naturally. hence my soulless remark. but ultimately it's all so backward looking I can't help but wonder this is as pointless as it can get. as with all retro things it's fine when it first surfaced, but it's been going on for two years or so and has certainly wore out its welcome. even bicep on their latest EP branched out a bit.

Confession time, despite being a Perlon fan I’ve never heard Zip play, loads of people rave about his sets, but any recorded ones sound a little flat to me. I did catch and really enjoy Sammy Dee once and people have, possibly unfairly, called him the poor man’s Zip so perhaps as with a lot of DJs, actually being there is what matters?

For some reason there aren't many recorded Zip sets online, I can't think of any good ones offhand - definitely wouldn't say "being there is what matters", good music is good music! Seen him quite a few times, always been great and filled with what-on-earth-is-that moments but he's been different every time as well.

Sammy Dee i can take or leave, 'poor mans Zip' would probably be someone like Binh!

i've got an interview with dj sprinkles coming out very soon...interesting stuff from TT as ever.

This new Morphosis concept thing is interesting. I've only listened to the non-theme tracks so far (Dismantle/Tamrat Version) and they're much more in the, uh, opal tapes-esque noisy techno vein than his previous stuff

Disconcerting, questing brilliance from Rabih Beaini: two sick, nervy techno killers (including an Ethio homage), stalking the corrosive perimeters of noise; and deep, long excerpts from his engrossing soundtrack to Dreyer's Vampyr, with contributions from the Upperground crew, and Sun Ra in its marrow, alternately driving and motorik, off-the-wall, lost in space.

I'm ambivalent about Move D these days, I feel like over the last 2-3 years he's got pretty lazy in his selections - which is odd because in your interview he seems to think the opposite (but then otoh he doesnt sound all that convinced!) but you listen to his sets and its the same records again and again

Which I think is shown by this

Finding out what records are is one thing, getting hold of them is another - and the way discogs is going for both old and new records its getting harder not easier to get hold of records - its a weird paradox, digging has got simultaneously easier and harder

a huge amount's been cut out of the interview from the original transcript (obviously) - if memory serves me correctly, he said the fact that he does long stints on the road and only plays vinyl is the main reason why his sets can sound pretty similar. Not a watertight justification I know, but a valid point IMO.

Yes I wasn't meaning to be a dick (tho pretty much everyone good is vinyl only so cant see that as a reason) its more that it seems he's been playing pretty much the same stuff for about 3 years and I kinda wonder if hes given up on digging for new or different records to play (at same time I guess he's playing to slightly different audiences now, something which he intimated in your interview eg "people expecting certain records")

Maybe lament is a too strong a word but I really miss the Move D of Kunststoff and the Deep Space Network music. I guess chill out rooms haven't been a fixture in clubs for many years and it's difficult to sell electronic music let alone downtempo stuff. He's clearly an awesome musician which, to me at least, doesn't show through his DJing as much. Kunststoff and some of those Source records; Reagenz, Headshop comp, Yoni etc. are still pretty amazing.

Kudos to the interviewer for mentioning the Namlook connection tho. His Source label was quite a lot more interesting to me in the late 90s'/00s than Source just because it was more varied.

Anyway the point I was trying to make isn't about that and I'm sure nobody particularly wants to have that discussion again. The point I was trying to make is that its an odd argument for Move D to say his sets are samey because he is vinyl only as though that makes him an anomaly, when a great deal of DJs play vinyl only

Format clearly is dependent on what music a DJ plays, where they play, where they are based amongst whole number of other preferences / factors.

Steven Tang is kind of 'yawn' detroit. I've really grown to hate those 'deep' pads which is a shame because play me an old Glenn underground track a couple of years ago and I'd wet myself.

Having said that give me an old school hiphop sample and I'm yours. Ivano Tetelepta, Roger Gerressen and Andy Kolwes have released awesome tunes...

I think All Inn is a bit over the place. The Kolwes I've got excited over is the one he released on Anyway (own label?) which is has links to the Klickklack/ Gabriel Ananda Cologne scene. It's probably my favourite record of 2013.. so hypnotic and rich.

Also, on a house tip, I think Sonja Moonear has been on fire this year, the Adil Hiani is so jump up cool and the Agazzi mix is nice. She's playing in London at the weekend..

On a more mainstream tip, I'm not sure if Zed Bias & Paleman's Furrball has been mentioned? Does a post-dubstep wighnomy bros thing for me..

I think, perhaps, it depends on where you here this music. I mean, I don't dislike DJ Haus it sounds like a lot of house I listened to with gay friends in the 90's. Muscle flexing, bouncing, floor house. Thematically too similar to the more mainstream local clubs, not really conducive to a good night out. Definitely too wearing on a couple of MDMA bumps. Such is the variability of house music.
