You realise we are going to have to look at that first post all year now? I propose switching it with a picture of something else entirely.

ah great, thanks for that one - figured it shouldn't have been too difficult but i don't know the artist or label

lyhqtu, Wednesday, 9 January 2013 17:07 (twelve years ago)

tho i see the label also has releases by kink, which makes kind of a sense because the track reminds me a lil of what kink did in his changes of life cover

lyhqtu, Wednesday, 9 January 2013 17:08 (twelve years ago)

I've made a mix including several tunes I discovered through bobbins threads of the last couple of years. The sound quality is a bit odd in places on the first track (due to me not totally understanding Ableton warp mode stuff) but it gets better after that. I'm not posting it on the DJ mixes thread because I'm far from being a DJ. Link here

A Yawning Chasm (Nasty, Brutish & Short), Wednesday, 9 January 2013 22:07 (twelve years ago)

I tend more towards vinyl than ableton for mixes but if you're using ableton what warp mode are you using?

personally I think i would go for repitch mode wherever possible (presuming your tracks are all reasonably close in terms of BPM). With this mode obviously if there are loads of transient markers everywhere you want rid of those as itll change pitch, so just set 1.0.0 at the first sound (or first kick if it doesnt work), then do warp as straight from there. it should get rid of all the transients, then look at 5.0.0 and if the kick isnt dead on 5 just drag it to 5, then do a loop between 1-5 and see if it sounds ok, then 33-37, 97-101, 193-197 or so and see if its kept things right the whole way thru

repitch mode, to me, is messing with the track the least and therefore is the way to go

downloading your mix now

damn that's james from twin peaks

nothing can doom this groove is a heavy line, might have to sample it

KitevsPill, Thursday, 10 January 2013 16:42 (twelve years ago)

what warp mode are you using?

Beats. My mate (who is hosting the mix for me) also suggested using repitch instead (but only aftered I'd made it). The thing is, the track where I notice oddness the most is the first track, which doesn't have any of those markers for irregular beats, and where the tempo was hardly shifted at all (from 123 down to 122) so I don't really understand why it sounds like that.

A Yawning Chasm (Nasty, Brutish & Short), Thursday, 10 January 2013 18:07 (twelve years ago)

To lyhqtu / suare (same person?) - I've remixed the whole thing now, using re-pitch where possible (and a few other bits of trickery I didn't previously know how to do), thanks for the tip. I won't derail this thread any further, but will post the new version on the dj mixes thread once it's online.

dan138zig (Durrr Durrr Durrrrrr), Monday, 21 January 2013 10:41 (twelve years ago)

boring. can't take the OTT sidechaining kick/bass anymore. nothing particularly 'raw' or 'code' like about it. if you'd told me it was 5 years old i wouldn't have been surprised. nice enough vibe, but it's not really doing anything for me.

Crackle Box, Monday, 21 January 2013 11:19 (twelve years ago)

Crackle Box, Monday, 21 January 2013 14:01 (twelve years ago)

yea, one could mistake you for a hater, hahah.

well, I've only been following this partisan stuff again these past few weeks so that might explain why the track sounds exciting to me.

Its a big pool Durr, have fun.

Josiah Alan, Monday, 21 January 2013 15:12 (twelve years ago)

I'm actually looking for tracks with specific sound, exactly like "raw code". Percussion-heavy, kinda techno leaning. Other artists that I can think of: Kowton, Joe, Pangaea. Anyone can direct me to the right places? Beside the obvious like Swamp81, Hessle, etc.

i don't hear that track as particularly sidechain-heavy? boring, yeah.

so is this where i'm supposed to post my random beat scene and outsider/deconstructionist 'dance music' links this year?

curious about how you guys keep up with stuff, especially through the internets. (i'm pretty isolated geographically and socially, irl clubbing here is not very exciting generally, though i have to do it every once in a while because i gotta dance [i m in the intermountain west in case u were wondering].)

so far i:

troll thru random juno dj charts
look at resident advisor and read things
ilx
look up stuff on youtube from that vince aletti disco chart book

becoming more interested in what's "current" / trying to find surprising things in the now and would like to expand my information seeking behavior beyond the above.

3 2013 releases I'm liking...

Anne Clark is on the new Kuniyuki record from Mule. In my opinion Mule has been pretty lacklustre in recent times but this one hits me. It's even got a Barnt remix.

Knox - Here (Tejada remix). Tejada remixes are flying out the door, I like this one. Sort of cheesy vocals.

Langenberg - Alto Seco, deep driving house on Two Birds. This builds really nicely.

Raudive - Traffic EP. Absolutely loving Oliver Ho in the last 12 months. This one sounds great next to Daniel Avery.

suare, Thursday, 28 February 2013 21:16 (twelve years ago)

New Superpitcher remix of Ada (http://www.kompakt.fm/releases/paws) is 13 minutes long and beatless, which is a little disappointing.

Really liking "Fall Back" by Factory Floor, after disliking all previous FF songs I've heard. Also Legowelt's "Wayfaring Stranger," "Beams" by Raudive, the Syclops album, and all three tracks on Secret Circuit's "Afterlife."

I love the promo blurb for Sog/Wolfgang Voigt's "For The Love Of God" (http://www.kompakt.fm/releases/for_the_love_of_god)

"In the beginning God created the bass drum. He made it beat 8,601 days. Then he left it away. God said: Death is the greatest work of art. And it's expensive. Finally infinite. That's politics and science and art. The art of omission. The art of refusal. Death is absolute. The bass drum is absolute. Do you want the absolute bass drum? If you manage to convince him, God will be happy to lend you his axe, because what happens is what he wants. Just like the people. They want it to happen, too. The most expensive work of art in the world is a skull encrusted with 8,601 diamonds."

Coda is insane, very "Desire". Plus the 1993 dreaminess of the mid-section. Hard to top the percussive Laurie Anderson vibes of the original but I think it just about equals it.

Lex did you ever hear the Ame/Dixon Boiler Room set.

Tim F, Wednesday, 13 March 2013 13:41 (twelve years ago)

no i keep hearing people talk about it but it's 4 hours long!!!!

flamenco drop (lex pretend), Wednesday, 13 March 2013 13:43 (twelve years ago)

lol I think this is the first thing you've described as being 4 hours long that actually nearly is.

It's kind of like the closest thing there is to an actual full-blown (quality-wise as well as stylistically) resumption (this feels like the best word for it) of Fabric 13 vibes.

Tim F, Wednesday, 13 March 2013 13:45 (twelve years ago)

But yeah it's a fair point to be a bit lairy of the length.

Tim F, Wednesday, 13 March 2013 13:48 (twelve years ago)

flamenco drop (lex pretend), Wednesday, 13 March 2013 13:52 (twelve years ago)

i'm already desperately trying and failing to find a 2hr block for the efdemin fact mix. can't deal with anything above that.

flamenco drop (lex pretend), Wednesday, 13 March 2013 13:54 (twelve years ago)

60-90 minutes is best length for a mix i think though recently I've had some very long flights and found some real gems towards the end of a couple 4 hour Cleymoore mixes

suare, Wednesday, 13 March 2013 17:11 (twelve years ago)

i find with 4 hr ones i can play from where i left off and it doesn't ruin it too much. and then yeah an occasional long journey or whatever and you get the whole lot.

Tioc Norris (LocalGarda), Wednesday, 13 March 2013 17:13 (twelve years ago)

With mixes longer than 2 hours I do sometimes chop them up, I don't think anything is lost by sectioning mixes that are otherwise too long to practically hear in one go.

suare, Wednesday, 13 March 2013 17:15 (twelve years ago)

As someone that made a 16 hour long mix last summer, let me say that the 45 minute mix is a most underrated artform.

sorta on-the-fence-but-not wrt ejeca / w&o, a whole set of it is kinda what's the point as charged but a little bit here and there is wicked effective and feels anything but redundant

in particular ejeca's best stuff has a vicious directness that is almost grimelike; would v much like to see royal-t have (more of a) dabble

yeah but in ejeca/w&o's tracks it (along with other 90's elements) feels mandatory. it's like they were thinking "we're making a 90's style house track here. make sure all the elements are in check." they do it self consciously instead of naturally. hence my soulless remark. but ultimately it's all so backward looking I can't help but wonder this is as pointless as it can get. as with all retro things it's fine when it first surfaced, but it's been going on for two years or so and has certainly wore out its welcome. even bicep on their latest EP branched out a bit.

"willie burns" posts on ILX as well. But I think only to the DJ playlists page, where he posts often less than informative playlists of his internet radio show. He may lurk elsewhere. He may even be reading this.

Jee Day's Sum of Love is my favorite song of this upcoming summer. I've DJ'd with DJ and he's a really nice guy. I've always liked his tracks but this one I love.

that track from the get perlonized vid is killing me, apparently he played it in Bucharest too so maybe it'll surface at some point

suare, Friday, 24 May 2013 10:55 (twelve years ago)

Someone on the Underlying Form group on Facebook has been trying to ID that.

Chewshabadoo, Friday, 24 May 2013 11:03 (twelve years ago)

A lot of people are after that one! (and the other zip at concrete vid which is horrendously rare and is never ever going to get ID'd) this one should soon enough though I think

suare, Friday, 24 May 2013 11:23 (twelve years ago)

Confession time, despite being a Perlon fan I’ve never heard Zip play, loads of people rave about his sets, but any recorded ones sound a little flat to me. I did catch and really enjoy Sammy Dee once and people have, possibly unfairly, called him the poor man’s Zip so perhaps as with a lot of DJs, actually being there is what matters?

Chewshabadoo, Friday, 24 May 2013 11:36 (twelve years ago)

For some reason there aren't many recorded Zip sets online, I can't think of any good ones offhand - definitely wouldn't say "being there is what matters", good music is good music! Seen him quite a few times, always been great and filled with what-on-earth-is-that moments but he's been different every time as well.

Sammy Dee i can take or leave, 'poor mans Zip' would probably be someone like Binh!

suare, Friday, 24 May 2013 12:01 (twelve years ago)

No criticism of Binh intended, he plays some great records!

not sure if i care for what he's done with it (kinda too much tss-tss for a hypnoloopjam?) but zhane's 'crush' is a lovely song and personal fave

This new Morphosis concept thing is interesting. I've only listened to the non-theme tracks so far (Dismantle/Tamrat Version) and they're much more in the, uh, opal tapes-esque noisy techno vein than his previous stuff

mh, Thursday, 27 June 2013 18:27 (twelve years ago)

Disconcerting, questing brilliance from Rabih Beaini: two sick, nervy techno killers (including an Ethio homage), stalking the corrosive perimeters of noise; and deep, long excerpts from his engrossing soundtrack to Dreyer's Vampyr, with contributions from the Upperground crew, and Sun Ra in its marrow, alternately driving and motorik, off-the-wall, lost in space.

i wasn't into the first two tracks, i guess the more immediate connection to prog is the pretentiousness

the late great, Thursday, 27 June 2013 18:35 (twelve years ago)

in the description from the label or the actual music? i'm not sure if i buy it as being _that_ pretentious

Brief interview I did with Move D up here:
http://crackmagazine.net/music/move-d-feature/

the Shearer of simulated snowsex etc. (Dwight Yorke), Tuesday, 2 July 2013 22:30 (twelve years ago)

I'm ambivalent about Move D these days, I feel like over the last 2-3 years he's got pretty lazy in his selections - which is odd because in your interview he seems to think the opposite (but then otoh he doesnt sound all that convinced!) but you listen to his sets and its the same records again and again

suare, Wednesday, 3 July 2013 12:00 (twelve years ago)

Which I think is shown by this

"Do you envy 18-year-olds who can listen to a mix online and then have the entire discography of every artist on it within minutes?" - which is only true if the records are predictable. Finding out what records are is one thing, getting hold of them is another - and the way discogs is going for both old and new records its getting harder not easier to get hold of records - its a weird paradox, digging has got simultaneously easier and harder

suare, Wednesday, 3 July 2013 12:12 (twelve years ago)

Oh and this new Floorplan album ('Paradise') is EXCELLENT

Just listening to this now and fuck, it goes in hard doesn't it?

Filk Hollins (NickB), Wednesday, 3 July 2013 14:06 (twelve years ago)

a huge amount's been cut out of the interview from the original transcript (obviously) - if memory serves me correctly, he said the fact that he does long stints on the road and only plays vinyl is the main reason why his sets can sound pretty similar. Not a watertight justification I know, but a valid point IMO.

the Shearer of simulated snowsex etc. (Dwight Yorke), Wednesday, 3 July 2013 15:54 (twelve years ago)

Yes I wasn't meaning to be a dick (tho pretty much everyone good is vinyl only so cant see that as a reason) its more that it seems he's been playing pretty much the same stuff for about 3 years and I kinda wonder if hes given up on digging for new or different records to play (at same time I guess he's playing to slightly different audiences now, something which he intimated in your interview eg "people expecting certain records")

suare, Wednesday, 3 July 2013 16:17 (twelve years ago)

Maybe lament is a too strong a word but I really miss the Move D of Kunststoff and the Deep Space Network music. I guess chill out rooms haven't been a fixture in clubs for many years and it's difficult to sell electronic music let alone downtempo stuff. He's clearly an awesome musician which, to me at least, doesn't show through his DJing as much. Kunststoff and some of those Source records; Reagenz, Headshop comp, Yoni etc. are still pretty amazing.

mmmm, Wednesday, 3 July 2013 16:34 (twelve years ago)

Kudos to the interviewer for mentioning the Namlook connection tho. His Source label was quite a lot more interesting to me in the late 90s'/00s than Source just because it was more varied.

mmmm, Wednesday, 3 July 2013 16:39 (twelve years ago)

tho pretty much everyone good is vinyl only

yeeeeah, no

mh, Wednesday, 3 July 2013 16:51 (twelve years ago)

I have no particular issue with digital DJing fwiw but I can't think of many good DJs that play digitally (this is not to say there are none)

suare, Wednesday, 3 July 2013 16:53 (twelve years ago)

Anyway the point I was trying to make isn't about that and I'm sure nobody particularly wants to have that discussion again. The point I was trying to make is that its an odd argument for Move D to say his sets are samey because he is vinyl only as though that makes him an anomaly, when a great deal of DJs play vinyl only

suare, Wednesday, 3 July 2013 16:55 (twelve years ago)

Format clearly is dependent on what music a DJ plays, where they play, where they are based amongst whole number of other preferences / factors.

Anyone got the new Steven Tang album? love one track on it but not feeling the rest so much and trying to spend less money

suare, Wednesday, 3 July 2013 21:32 (twelve years ago)

Steven Tang is kind of 'yawn' detroit. I've really grown to hate those 'deep' pads which is a shame because play me an old Glenn underground track a couple of years ago and I'd wet myself.

mmmm, Wednesday, 3 July 2013 22:29 (twelve years ago)

Having said that give me an old school hiphop sample and I'm yours. Ivano Tetelepta, Roger Gerressen and Andy Kolwes have released awesome tunes...

mmmm, Wednesday, 3 July 2013 22:32 (twelve years ago)

Ivano played at Undersound recently and a friend put Roger Gerressen a weeks ago also. Isn't Andy Kolwes on All In? I avoided because that label seems to have no quality control at all but i'll check it out now

Think you're right about the tang, dont want to be buy for just the one track (ended up doing that with the tetelepta as well)

suare, Wednesday, 3 July 2013 22:42 (twelve years ago)

I think All Inn is a bit over the place. The Kolwes I've got excited over is the one he released on Anyway (own label?) which is has links to the Klickklack/ Gabriel Ananda Cologne scene. It's probably my favourite record of 2013.. so hypnotic and rich.

Also, on a house tip, I think Sonja Moonear has been on fire this year, the Adil Hiani is so jump up cool and the Agazzi mix is nice. She's playing in London at the weekend..

mmmm, Wednesday, 3 July 2013 22:56 (twelve years ago)

On a more mainstream tip, I'm not sure if Zed Bias & Paleman's Furrball has been mentioned? Does a post-dubstep wighnomy bros thing for me..

how about boxwork

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BtxMKm-qrEA

three months old or so

the late great, Wednesday, 3 July 2013 23:34 (twelve years ago)

I think, perhaps, it depends on where you here this music. I mean, I don't dislike DJ Haus it sounds like a lot of house I listened to with gay friends in the 90's. Muscle flexing, bouncing, floor house. Thematically too similar to the more mainstream local clubs, not really conducive to a good night out. Definitely too wearing on a couple of MDMA bumps. Such is the variability of house music.

mmmm, Wednesday, 3 July 2013 23:35 (twelve years ago)

here = hear.. obv

mmmm, Wednesday, 3 July 2013 23:40 (twelve years ago)

well i disagree that muscle-flexing, bouncing floor house makes for a bad night but i agree that a lot of the stuff you guys post sounds like the musical equivalent of an sad, limp, mdma-addled penis

robsoul's put out some good stuff this year

mmmm, Wednesday, 3 July 2013 23:49 (twelve years ago)

mmmm, Wednesday, 3 July 2013 23:52 (twelve years ago)

local "underground" clubs where they play tech house, stuff like shonky or pepe braddock or whatever mixed with old acid classics. honestly it's never quite tough / jacking enough for me, i tend to get bored.

the late great, Wednesday, 3 July 2013 23:54 (twelve years ago)

Also, I seem to recognise half the people in that video.

Chewshabadoo, Thursday, 4 July 2013 08:14 (twelve years ago)

I once killed, in a bad way, a house party in the very early hours by playing another Peekay tune “In The Air“ – I should have really took my queues from the other DJ playing italo and electr. Bad judgement call that one, but at another party it was the tune of the night.

Also check out the 10" with “Ain't Gonna”. Amen garage!

Chewshabadoo, Thursday, 4 July 2013 08:21 (twelve years ago)

I can only find a small clip of the latter online, it’s the second track on this clip http://www.dnrvinyl.co.uk/product_info.php?products_id=5414&osCsid=4e5a8ebcd5511e942493bf76543984e7

Either Zip or Ben UFO from a couple weekends ago, both played outside in the daytime then b2b inside after dark ...unbelievable on the b2b!

I saw someone else posting a vid from that. Wished I’d heard about it before.

Chewshabadoo, Thursday, 4 July 2013 09:59 (twelve years ago)

Neither were announced - both of them far too popular for a venue size of 250 or whatever it was

The Bobbin’s thread can include DJ sets right? Because the two times I’ve caught Leah Floyeurs this year have been right up there - best “new” DJ discovery for me at the moment. is there not a single digital release from trilogy tapes? so disappointing.

dan138zig (Durrr Durrr Durrrrrr), Thursday, 25 July 2013 02:43 (twelve years ago)

morphine: yeah, I love this label. forgot to mention this.
fifth wall: it's noisy techno alright, but not what I'd call avant. this is more similar to ancient methods or something.
bed of nails, clandestine records or astro:dynamics: sampled some of their records and what I heard was some ambient/drone/synthwave or something. maybe you could lead me to some specific releases?
moon b: I don't know, sounds like noisier version of deep house to me
mgun: pretty good
PPU: so diverse, I don't know where to look.
trilogy tapes: THIS. sucks that they don't release digital. I can't even find some illegal vinyl rips.
kyle hall: "Spoof" is the bomb

dan138zig (Durrr Durrr Durrrrrr), Thursday, 25 July 2013 06:16 (twelve years ago)

I'd say a lot of these labels are vinyl only. Have you been checking the Mr Saturday Night stuff?

Or WT Records too, from time to time, fits what you're looking for.

Anthony Naples and Steve Summers have loads of releases in this vein, lately.

Shamrock Shoe (LocalGarda), Thursday, 25 July 2013 07:05 (twelve years ago)

Oops I just see your video. Naples has about five 12s out lately, all pretty good. I'll do you a list of stuff when I'm near my records!

Shamrock Shoe (LocalGarda), Thursday, 25 July 2013 07:06 (twelve years ago)

anthony naples is better when less noisy, more detroit

the late great, Thursday, 25 July 2013 07:53 (twelve years ago)

guess i'm kinda après-garde

the late great, Thursday, 25 July 2013 07:55 (twelve years ago)

so what's avant iyo? like difficult beat structures?

the late great, Thursday, 25 July 2013 07:57 (twelve years ago)

or the ambient/drone bent that a lot of this stuff has

i'd second the sensate focus recommendation, imo they are the shit, real deal avant fart imo, but as noted upthread not noisy, more hyperclean actually

the late great, Thursday, 25 July 2013 08:00 (twelve years ago)

looking forward to your list, ronan!

dan138zig (Durrr Durrr Durrrrrr), Thursday, 25 July 2013 10:47 (twelve years ago)

i don't see anthony naples as avant in the slightest, nor wt records. and i don't think you can necessarily equate it with noisier or more abrasive versions of techno like container or bed of nails. the people i feel are making it are usually coming from an intimate knowledge of how house music works, and are using that knowledge to distort and undermine the usual rhythmic/tonal/dynamic structures of the genre. people like bandshell, mm & km, sensate focus as mentioned.

still love naples tho, don't get me wrong, his tracks bounce and shudder along awesomely.

ennui soundsystem (doobydoo), Thursday, 25 July 2013 13:48 (twelve years ago)

yeah i sort of figured that naples or wt-type stuff was what durr meant - regardless of the language used.

Shamrock Shoe (LocalGarda), Thursday, 25 July 2013 14:01 (twelve years ago)

With regards to Peoples Potential Unlimited, I think this Dwight Sikes guy may be the jam, judging from this weird youtube vid http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=DF6uQDAnRu8
Also, I can point you to some vinyl rips of Trilogy Tapes if you want.

what_have_you, Thursday, 25 July 2013 14:37 (twelve years ago)

tbh i really hate the term avant garde

the late great, Thursday, 25 July 2013 18:22 (twelve years ago)

"yeah i sort of figured that naples or wt-type stuff was what durr meant"

well, not really. I'm not too familiar with naples but I don't think he's made many tracks that sound like his work(s) for opal tapes. and WR, I like it, but it's not "avant", at least from what I've listened. quirky/weirdo, maybe. late great: I use the term loosely for the lack of better word.

"Also, I can point you to some vinyl rips of Trilogy Tapes if you want."

YES, PLEASE. it's not like I don't want to pay or anything but I don't even have a turntable and I live in Asia (shipping cost, hello). their loss for not providing digital releases, sorry to say.

Terekke's YYYYYYYYYY 12" is nice. Submerged retro tracks. Actually I'm finding the rise of L.I.E.S. interesting as a zeitgeisty label...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F1Qmi34ouCQ

MikoMcha, Sunday, 11 August 2013 14:50 (twelve years ago)

i must admit i don't really get the rise of l.i.e.s.

it's all so samey, not very danceable really, and kind of rudimentary

about one good track per three EPs imo

the late great, Sunday, 11 August 2013 16:58 (twelve years ago)

Yeah, in that respect it feels like as much a stylistic reaction or correction of some kind to the pristine production of European minimal.

MikoMcha, Sunday, 11 August 2013 17:03 (twelve years ago)

I don't totally get the LIES hype either. When I hear one of their releases at the record shop it's usually something pretty decent but not good enough for me to pay £9-10 for

I did grab the new one from Greg Beato though. Raw jacking house, sort of like Funkineven or Kyle Hall. That recent Terekke release is awesome too

paolo, Sunday, 11 August 2013 17:13 (twelve years ago)

yeah i'm not saying they don't put out good tracks, it's just that they're really doing the one trick (super overdriven jack track) to death

the late great, Sunday, 11 August 2013 17:21 (twelve years ago)

i agree in that i find myself wishing that more tracks would just go for it, but i'd probably give them a higher success rate than that just b/c i still like a decent amount of the stuff that isn't all that danceable. best l.i.e.s. tracks for me are probably still 'zero-point field' and '4 club use only', one of which doesn't even really fit the aesthetic.

karl...arlk...rlka...lkar..., Sunday, 11 August 2013 17:34 (twelve years ago)

The Marcos Cabral release in particular sort of made me sort of wonder about their style, especially the story behind these old tape recordings:

I knew nothing about "making" music at this time and was using this fairly primitive wav. looping program called Acid. I just started recording my crappy Roland MC-303 into my computer and would just mash loops together over and over. Listening to these tracks now, I have a really vague memory of making them, and feel that their naive nature and the happy accidents that happened here are pretty exciting to listen to.

Is this nostalgia? Retro-aesthetics? Or just about capturing a "raw" style?

There's another moment in Morelli's RA podcast interview. Imperfect cheap equipment, grungy home recordings and, of course, vinyl all the way:

I recorded it in Ménilmontant, Paris last month at my friend Alex's apartment. He kindly let me use a retired setup, pulling out from under his bed two off-brand turntables with drifting pitch, a Pioneer DJM-350 mixer, and one Coby speaker all going through a miniature home stereo system. The turntables were set up battle style, one on a kitchen table, the other on a smaller coffee table. I did it only with records, in a professional manner.

MikoMcha, Sunday, 11 August 2013 17:35 (twelve years ago)

yeah, i really have no interest in talking up the back to basics shit. it's fun using hardware, but i don't care how people get there if i like the track--god, even expressing an opinion about it is boring.

karl...arlk...rlka...lkar..., Sunday, 11 August 2013 17:40 (twelve years ago)

hardware vs software almost as boring as vinyl vs mp3

the late great, Sunday, 11 August 2013 17:49 (twelve years ago)

But it's not just the hardware thing, it's also a kind of punk influence of capturing intensity, rather than perfection.

MikoMcha, Sunday, 11 August 2013 17:54 (twelve years ago)

false binary!

the late great, Sunday, 11 August 2013 17:57 (twelve years ago)

also lots of lies stuff plays up the drone aspect of acid and shies away from groove or jacking in favor of a hazy sort of quality, lo-fi-ish but not intense

karl...arlk...rlka...lkar..., Sunday, 11 August 2013 18:05 (twelve years ago)

True, I'm probably not using the right words here. I'm just struck by how quickly their style has become quite popular, especially in Europe (although I am in Amsterdam, it could just be the proximity to Rush Hour). The hardware vs. software thing doesn't explain all of that in my opinion. It's also an atmosphere of doing things fast and cheap, trying to convey a sense of something like underground dance music.

MikoMcha, Sunday, 11 August 2013 18:27 (twelve years ago)

UDM?

the late great, Sunday, 11 August 2013 18:30 (twelve years ago)

I read like three reviews of the Gunnar Haslam release that go on about his minimal social media presence. Only 68 followers on Soundcloud, only one like on his Facebook! I guess this is also what it means to be underground in 2013.

MikoMcha, Sunday, 11 August 2013 18:35 (twelve years ago)

I think it'd be hard to listen to releases by (for example) Delroy Edwards, Xosar, Terekke, Jahiliyya Fields and Vepauteen and then describe them all as super overdriven jack tracks "doing one trick". The stuff isn't as 'buy on sight' for me as it was in the first two years, but that's sort of to be expected considering the label's putting out more releases than before.

...

The new Prins Thomas 12" w/ mixes by DJ Fett Burger and Kambo Super Sound is pretty great http://hardwax.com/68611/prins-thomas/bobletekno-and-flau-pappadans-versions/

My god. Pure ideology. (ey), Sunday, 11 August 2013 18:49 (twelve years ago)

since the american noise comp (which i bought and enjoyed) came out, they've released singles by delroy edwards, greg beato, marcos cabral, vereker, svangalisghost, steve summers, terekke, bookworms and gunnar haslam. by my count that's about 75% noisy overdriven jack tracks. i'm not sure what i'd call terrekke, bookworms or haslam (noisy overdriven balearic?) but believe it or not that stuff sounds kind of samey to me too ...

the late great, Sunday, 11 August 2013 19:15 (twelve years ago)

gunnar haslam's thing was actually pretty cool ... bookworms i'm much more skeptical of, totally in line w/ lots of lies stuff, we'll just make a basic minimal house track (low tempo in this case) and then just slather it in distortion

the late great, Sunday, 11 August 2013 19:19 (twelve years ago)

My god. Pure ideology. (ey), Sunday, 11 August 2013 19:41 (twelve years ago)

actually those all pretty much sound the same to me in that what leaps out at me first is the noisiness and distortion

the late great, Sunday, 11 August 2013 21:24 (twelve years ago)

the svengalisghost track is the only one that strikes me as particularly noisy. the florian kupfer is overdriven and lo-fi sounding, in kind of the default lies style. samantha's vacation is on some higher-tempo drexciyan vibe. the delroy edwards track is just really nice chunky deep house, i overlooked that track actually, i really dig it.

karl...arlk...rlka...lkar..., Sunday, 11 August 2013 22:11 (twelve years ago)

Actually haven't really listened to the Delroy Edwards releases, despite being some of the "hits" on the label. That track is dope though.

MikoMcha, Monday, 12 August 2013 07:45 (twelve years ago)

re: l.i.e.s. i kinda agree with late great. tho i love some of their tracks (i.e. 'deep into memory', 'african rhythms' or 'frigia' for example) their whole aesthethic feels too contrived and self-centered. i mean, it's not like mathematics or (to some extent) echovolt haven't been releasing some similar-ish stuff without getting due recognition. also, the whole morelli "fuck you" attitude and "we're true to the underground" speech is off putting.

with that said, the gunnar haslam record might be my fav thing they've put out so far. the terekke one is also really good.

rusty_allen, Wednesday, 14 August 2013 12:46 (twelve years ago)

Morelli strikes me as being fairly down to earth in interviews though, a lot of the records he's putting out are from people he's worked with for years, who are friends or he's known for a while personally. He doesn't really seem that arrogant either. I guess it depends on what you mean by "Fuck You" attitude.

Damn this Nick Hoppner Ep IS good. I'm more than happy with him occasionally releasing an excellent ep every so often, but his consistency as a producer is such that I wouldn't be surprised if he were to put out a really exceptional album (as his Panoramabar mix of last year was).

Indeed, when I saw him DJ I half-jokingly dubbed him the Orson Welles of house (both are/were huge and physically imposing grey-bearded dudes that are exceptionally adept at the many different aspects of their respective fields).

cheeseburger, Wednesday, 16 October 2013 09:07 (eleven years ago)

I subscribe to that RA Spotify playlist but I dunno, listen to it always feels like kind of a chore. Maybe that's the preponderance of drab Hot Creations/Crosstown Rebels stuff.

Also a largely fruitless search for Omar Souleyman stuff the other day did lead to the discovery that the Acid Arab EP is now on Spotify and that is so so good.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 16 October 2013 09:17 (eleven years ago)

yes, noted mnml techno label hot cray have a lot to answer for

r|t|c, Wednesday, 16 October 2013 10:48 (eleven years ago)

I like the first few releases up until the Miguel Campbell one, with a few others that were good like HNQO's Point of View or Benoit & Sergio. But they seem to have really dropped off after that. I've stopped even paying attention. The actual Hot Natured album is, like, kind of terrible, right? Almost comically bad.

MikoMcha, Wednesday, 16 October 2013 11:55 (eleven years ago)

Granted I'm willing to be convinced otherwise re: Different Sides Of The Sun.

MikoMcha, Wednesday, 16 October 2013 11:58 (eleven years ago)

yeah there's been a definite hot creations drop-off (the album is just boring rather than terrible imo) but i rebuke any long-standing hatred of them

lex pretend, Wednesday, 16 October 2013 12:15 (eleven years ago)

based on the reactions itt i expected something a bit more exciting from rezzett

that acid arab ep though >>>>>>>>>>>

lex pretend, Wednesday, 16 October 2013 12:15 (eleven years ago)

Yeah I don't hate Hot Creations really, the early Jones/Foss tracks are pretty great, and certainly don't have an ideological opposition to it, but a lot of it is just a bit dull - it tends to occupy a middle-ground that's neither hooky and discofied nor druggy enough for my tastes. If it leaned in either direction I'd probably get a lot more out of it.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 16 October 2013 12:34 (eleven years ago)

the album like hc itself is kinda shit, kinda fun... idk i wouldnt hasten anyone towards it but otoh if you can't have a singalong to 'take you there' or 'operate' or 'tightrope' then ur opinion is of no value tbh

but really though , their vein of stuff is what makes the ra lists choresome matt?? point out the trax to me cos all i'm seeing is like, 'bigger than prince' hot since 82 remix spoiling your marcel dettmann fun parade

r|t|c, Wednesday, 16 October 2013 12:56 (eleven years ago)

It changes every month though, not listened this month, maybe there's less of it. There always seems to be loads of Crosstown Rebels in there though.

The Daniel Avery album has its moments (chiefly the last two tracks) but it feels like a really rudimentary take on 90s album techno. He's not very good at beats at all, and for all the talk about him privileging melody over rhythm, there's not very much to get yr teeth into in that regard either.

unfortunately the records are super hard to get hold off IME

bass, Wednesday, 23 October 2013 20:52 (eleven years ago)

i think the artwork for the rezzett EP has a vintage IDM look to it

http://www.last.fm/music/Rezzett/+images/91632393

tell me that's not like something straight out of the skam or rephlex playbook

the late great, Wednesday, 23 October 2013 20:59 (eleven years ago)

? @ Rezzett being 'IDM'. it's techno.

My god. Pure ideology. (ey), Wednesday, 23 October 2013 21:05 (eleven years ago)

too arrhythmic to be proper techno, too detached from the floor. i guess it approaches detroit techno, particularly something like carl craig's 69 work. but between the emphasis on setting melody against noise and the electro / broken beat influence in the beats it sounds like IDM to me.

the late great, Wednesday, 23 October 2013 21:15 (eleven years ago)

i'm not really trying to be techno police here, i'm just saying it makes a lot more sense to me if i listen to it with my IDM hat on

the late great, Wednesday, 23 October 2013 21:17 (eleven years ago)

well Fire Bomb & Yayla both are essentially 4/4, no? obviously there's little weird bits of percussion thrown in, but I don't think its arrhythmic. also Fire Bomb has a big breakdown halfway through. I think both would work well in a set, maybe even the 2nd track in certain contexts. I gave my record to a friend and asked him to play it out soon, so I'm curious to see how that goes.

tbh I think something like the recent AMUS releases, while not straight techno either, work really well in a club if used right.

also someone like Jamal Moss is still said to make house & techno, right? and his stuff is perhaps even more unorthodox.

My god. Pure ideology. (ey), Wednesday, 23 October 2013 21:42 (eleven years ago)

i think of jamal moss as a keyboard jammer, more of an ambient dude even though he has beats

the late great, Wednesday, 23 October 2013 21:46 (eleven years ago)

he's much more rhythmically straight-ahead though so it sounds more like house/techno to my ears than rezzett

AMUS i thought was notorious for not working in clubs? i have a hard time with everything he's done since "take the plunge"

the late great, Wednesday, 23 October 2013 21:50 (eleven years ago)

tlg otm re: rezzett. i enjoyed it more when i listened to it to zone out than when i was vetting it for mixing.

karl...arlk...rlka...lkar..., Wednesday, 23 October 2013 21:54 (eleven years ago)

I think "dance-floor clearer" is used tongue in cheek by Huismann himself, but that's why I said "if used right" - including the place/time/crowd mood, etc. they're often not immediate IME - i missed out on Take The Plunge b/c it took like a month of listening to the samples for it to click, but I think that's what makes his recent tracks exciting/fun - once you lock into their groove, they make a lot of sense and are fun to dance to.

I had a similar experience with this Theo P record http://www.discogs.com/Theo-Parrish-Any-Other-Styles/release/3712285 - thankfully lots of people seem to hate it so it was easy to find a copy :)

btw Archive II on Clone Basement was 2 (relatively) straightforward bangers imo.

My god. Pure ideology. (ey), Wednesday, 23 October 2013 22:12 (eleven years ago)

yeah archive ii was good, especially "hang up"

Doesn't really have anything to do with techno/house in 2013 either.

Serious question though, isn't that all just Belgian new beat/electro? I looked up some of the original tracks, which were usually < 150bpm, and don't seem to resemble the much faster Dutch hard-house style gabba I normally associate with the genre. Lord help me, have I been leading a life mislead as to what proper gabba is?

Fiddler on a hot tin roof (ed.b), Thursday, 14 November 2013 22:04 (eleven years ago)

Yeah, its more New Beat / Belgium Techno - basically the FACT intern needs schooling -_^

Really feeling the new Recondite album. Between this, the new John Roberts/Pantha Du Prince/Lawrence albums, and everything on Pampa Records of late, there seems to be a renaissance of soft sad techno.

dan138zig (Durrr Durrr Durrrrrr), Friday, 22 November 2013 13:19 (eleven years ago)

the press release doesn't lead me to expect a particularly enjoyable experience

“i'm a regular guy, enjoy a good steak, drinking beer, and occasionally a game of pro basketball, republican talk radio... you know... all the good stuff. the music on this record is about immediacy, pressure, monotony, and stress. a great deal of the feelings conveyed within come from the fear and repulsion of basic human interaction, like if someone sitting behind you on the plane sneezes on you or being forced to shake the clammy hand of a stranger and the intimate paranoia of the mind and dealing with it or not.

not to make some deep intellectual fuck show of this, as it is not, it's just stress music jammed out quick and recorded. last year, i was staying in an area where all the hookers did their work. all they would do is smoke cigarettes, read the paper, talk on their cell phones, and spit. they would spit a lot. i would step in that hooker spit on the way home, often tracking it into the apartment building as i entered. this is where the title of the record comes from.”

karl...arlk...rlka...lkar..., Friday, 22 November 2013 18:27 (eleven years ago)

Yeah, I wasn't too blown away or anything by that record. Maybe some of the tracks might be interesting in a DJ set, but there's not a lot to recommend on its own.

Hieroglyphic Being was definitely one of my favourite times out dancing this year, but it’s been a great year for me. Intergalactic Gary and Traxx probably both better sets. On that list Surgeon still does it for me, loved his 'Ambient' set at Freerotation this year, and Ben UFO good if not great when I’ve seen him - the clubs and crowd were mediocre, so I’m sure he can play much better. Leah Floyeurs my discovery of the year easily. I missed DJ Sprinkles; seriously, on first at a night in Berlin and finished by 2am - who would expect that?

Friends: Thats enough music submissions, today will be the final day. This has a been very interesting exchange with people, and a truly modern experience.

There is some really great music here. I have gained this secret window of what is coming. If you wonder wether there is a future for our movement, if you sometimes think "is this frivolous?" or "I can't make it" I can tell you now you have a very bright future and there is some very deep thought happening with the next musical generation. Things are incredibly optimistic for our community.

I want to state that I am astounded by these demos. You shine bright with new life and energy. I am deeply impressed by your style, your skills and especially your technical prowess. So many of these demos just SOUND great. It is not physically possible to respond by hand to every submission so I hope you see these words here and know that I am grateful and very proud of our movement. READ MY WORDS: We are unstoppable!
