this isn't really accurate imo -- doing mixtapes of songs over industry beats was basically the way he built a buzz to get his first album released, he had a ton of those before anyone outside of D.C. knew who he was, before 'R&B mixtapes' were kind of a standard thing. he can be kind of all over the place and sometimes obvious w/ his aims/influences but "Text Messages" is probably the only time he seemed more cynical than the average R&B cat to me.

T. Evans tape is cool but feels kind of minor. I enjoyed it the couple times I played it but don't really remember any of it.

The King EP was my favorite thing that year and I've been fiending hard for new shit from them ever since but the Phonte/Glasper joints didn't really sate my appetite. Both felt too tied to someone else's aesthetic to really belong to King.

i would agree with the assessment of the EP as a whole as minor - not in a cutting way, there's nice stuff on there - but the title track and "u got a woman" pretty much blew my head off in completely opposite ways. if you don't jam "143" the song i don't even know what to say, like how can you not be massively impressed by what she's doing there? and actually her vocals were a huge surprise for me on it - she's SO poised

It led me to the question: is R&B's evolution comparable to that of, for example, rock? Or is rock not an appropriate comparison?

It just seems R&B has changed the most since it started than any other style, where R&B in 2013 can now have very little rhythm (steady beats instead) and blues on occasions, which sometimes include how a handsome stud cannot break off a lubricious dame.

The 90s used to throw up a lot of acts like that, where whoever it was who signed them did so after one gig when they were fucked. They'd realise their mistake but by then it'd be too late and the label would be stuck with them. The fact that this album is trickling out apparently only semi-officially suggests that XL have just given up.

not a lot of albums to really chew on (just Fantasia and Bilal and Dawn and the Tiffany Evans EP for me really), but radio's been GREAT, don't know what to tell you if you don't fuck with most/all of this year's hits by Tamar Braxton, Rihanna, Fantasia, Robin Thicke, Mariah, Sevyn Streeter, Ciara, Miguel, Kelly Rowland, T.Rone, Mindless Behavior, Eric Benet, Chrisette Michele, etc. then I dunno what to tell you. plus half the big rap songs on the radio are basically R&B songs (J. Cole, Wale, Future, Kendrick, etc.).

Thanks for the playlist. Yeah, I was definitely talking album-wise. The singles scene isn't nearly so bleak (though a lot of those singles, as much as I like them, are a little slight. Not that I'm trying to knock slight; I just don't know how many of them I'll remember at the end of the year).

Album wise Bilal is the crown jewel of the year so far. The Jade Alston and Tiffany Evans mixtapes are really good, too, but it doesn't really feel like we're in the Golden Age of The R&B Mixtape anymore, at least not right now.

would add om'mas keith to the albums list. more r&b artists tend to release in the second half of the year, too. and we're a week away from the ciara and kelly rowland albums dropping, both of which i'm excited about based on the singles.

as things stand r&b's given me me AOTY (still) in dawn, a couple of really strong mixtapes (tiffany evans (which inc. one of my singles of the year), jade alston) and a couple of really solid-to-great albums at different ends of the genre (fantasia, om'mas keith). i'm not as into the josé james album as some but i do like it a lot. i guess the really big names have all disappointed - timberlake and terius - though perhaps my biggest disappointment as such has been the fiasco of the beyoncé album campaign (love "grown woman" a lot though).

At the risk of being banned for life from this thread, I don't like "#Beautiful" at all. Obviously the beat is great and it sounded wonderful on the first listen or two, but it burned fast and bright for me, because there's nothing there underneath the syrupy chorus, just a thin, pandering sentiment. No hidden tricks, nothing to reveal itself, just that same, noxiously sweet chorus. It might as well be a Sugar Ray single, and I'm sort of sick at the thought of having to hear it again and again as often as I'm expecting to this summer.

i don't think it's an overly saccharine song -- it's kind of frank, like 'look, the physical stuff matters, i'm not going to give you a line about being beautiful on the inside'

I suppose I appreciate that frankness, but the way it pats itself on the back for its pro-superficiality stance grosses me out. It's like, if you're going to be shallow, just do it, don't pretend it's some rare, admirable stand.

appreciating physical beauty as well as a beautiful mind (both of which are specified) is not superficial

and i mean that's not even the half of it, as that very real and #beautiful line "the way you make me feel undressable" implies it's about how love can make you feel physically beautiful

evan at times like this i really struggle not to just post "BUT YOUUUUUU LIKE THE WEEKND YOU CAN'T TALK ABOUT SUPERFICIALITY"

and also that undressable line carried even more weight coming from MARIAH, a middle-aged woman in an industry where women's bodies are scrutinised more openly and grossly than ever, and where her own fluctuating weight has been the subject of way too many tabloid headlines
