Wizard Rifle is a trippy band.. the drummer is a beast. I saw em live awhile back and was impressed by their energy.
― SeanWayne, Saturday, 12 January 2013 19:31 (twelve years ago)
sad that Koloss isn't a wee bit higher. I think I liked this one more than Obzen (which I liked a lot). I have tix to see them in Feb. I've seen them twice as an opener (once for Slayer in 1999, when they outright destroyed, and once in 2008 for Ministry, and they looked downright bored)...never as a headliner.
Animals as Leaders are opening, I'm kinda 'meh' about them as an opener for Meshuggah.

I might think that the effort to be kookie and/obscure kept that Deftones record from being higher.. Its really their best record since White Pony, and the production is fucking amazing.
― SeanWayne, Sunday, 13 January 2013 03:30 (twelve years ago)
Fwiw, Pagan Altar (and Coven too, if they make this countdown) would be higher if I had remembered to vote for them. (I had them listed under "reissues" in my word file of favorite 2012 albums, and that list slipped my mind until after I'd filed my ballot. Oh well.)

I loved the sound and sense of space on Container Ships. So this part of a recent lukewarm review was especially baffling:
In general, Container Ships is heavy, but often doesn't feel heavy enough. As these two longer songs highlight, they don't always make the most effective use of space, which for any band-- no matter how sprawling or how compact-- is crucial.

I burned a vote on Rise and Fall's Faith. Forgot to nominate it, but liked it too much to resist. And after a bit of searching, I think this is the Belgian band's first mention on ILM... ever. Really underrated album from the first half of the year that slipped under the radar. Wondering if anyone else heard/liked it.

I liked the Witchcraft album much more than the Graveyard one (though not as much as previous albums I've heard by them -- didn't like Graveyard's as much as their debut, either), and not enough to vote for either.
Very likely would have voted for Cauldron's album, had I heard it -- their previous one was my #1 of 2011, overall. Am waiting for the new one to come out in the States, sometime early this year allegedly.

― EZ Snappin, Monday, 14 January 2013 18:09 (twelve years ago)
As a fan of everything Torche did through Meanderthal, I agree with EZ. Post-that album they seemed to have abandoned a lot of their lovely sludgy rumble. That said, judging by the new single they released last month, they may have realized this and begun to correct.
― anonanon, Monday, 14 January 2013 18:14 (twelve years ago)
I still disagree. Play it loud enough on the right gear with some distortion and you've got your sludgy rumble. However, I suppose they could simulate the sludgy rumble of live shows that could come through on recordings at lower volume on computer speakers, but I think it would be unnecessary.
― Fastnbulbous, Monday, 14 January 2013 18:19 (twelve years ago)

So if I remix it through crap equipment I'd hear what I want? No thanks. Agree with anonanon that the new single is promising. And, as I said, I like these guys; they still can write good songs, but the live versions kick the studio versions in the balls and laugh.

Voted Witch Mountain and Torche--both killer records. Was hoping WM would br higher, kinda had a neat Sibrisa meets 70s Heart feel to it. As far as Harmonicraft, this feels about right. This I liked mor Ed than Meanderthal but there was a LOT of melodically effective stoner albums this year...

incase you're wondering
Dordeduh is a Romanian folk / black metal band from Timișoara. The band was formed after internal tensions developed in Negură Bunget which resulted in Hupogrammos and Sol Faur leaving to form Dordeduh in 2009, while drummer Negru continued Negură Bunget with a few new musicians. To start understanding the essence of the band is to first delineate the two Romanian words that its name is composed of: “dor” and “duh”. Having a deep, unique meaning in Romanian, “dor” is thought to be untranslatable in any other language using only one word, its sense being of “longing/yearning for something”, “missing something”. It can be something palpable, well-known and familiar (a place, a person, a taste) but it can also be a nostalgic feeling brought up by something vaguely known, dwelling in an old chamber of one’s soul. It is this vague and everlasting longing of the human being that this word is most associated with. It can be a personal life experience or a vague remembrance of the primordial and archetypal state of the human psyche, the origin of the human soul, as “dor” reminds of the human ability to sense the ethereal sphere. The word “duh” could be translated as “spirit” and it defines the immaterial part or state of every living being. It also represents an attribute for all types of supernatural beings, forces, events and often can describe a ghost’s or a phantom’s immaterial form. The word’s etymological roots are related with the air as an element and it suggests an aerie vibration; it characterizes lightness and insubstantiality, an impalpable or intangible state. It also suggests the subtle and spiritual part of every living consciousness and it can be taken as a synonym of the esoteric word of “consciousness”. It is the living glint of the universe, dwelling deep inside of every being.Being comprised of these two words, DorDeDuh means “yearning for the spirit”; it is the humanity endless search for the spirit, for the sacred, for the values of the soul. We aim to link these two words to the significant values that make us humans, melting together the soul and the spirit. The way one aligns one’s experiences with one’s own soul, the way one relates with the Universe, the way one perceives and integrates, through Intention, the perpetually flowing Transcendence, that is what defines different levels of humanity in a person, that is what makes one Human.Musically, Dordeduh will follow the path opened by Negura Bunget, but the musical act will be accorded to a new perspective as we will experiment a new way of approaching black metal as well as using traditional instruments. It is normal for musicians to evolve and develop with every album released, but our goal is to push forward this natural development and to make Dordeduh distinguishable from our musical past.Line-up:Official members:Hupogrammos - vocals/guitars/keyboards/traditional instruments;Sol Faur - guitars/keyboards/traditional instruments;Flavius Misarăș - bass;Ovidiu Mihăiță - percussion & drums;Guest members:Sergio Ponti - drums & percussion;Arioch - keyboards;Thelemnar - drums & percussion;Gallallin - traditional instruments;Official Website: http://www.dordeduh.com/

It might be close, Neurosis could take it. I don't see any other band being a candidate for #1, though I never would have guessed Gojira wouldn't make top 10. Since Enslaved was so low, maybe Nachtmystium won't make it, as it's been kind of ignored.

i keep thinking christian mistress is gonna be #1
― Mordy, Tuesday, 15 January 2013 15:34 (twelve years ago)
Feel like this is a very doom/stoner laden list (which is cool, that's mostly what I was listening to this past summer), but being that I've been largely into death metal lately, I can kinda see why I haven't heard a lot of these.
Pallbearer was on mine I believe tho, I did get that one earlier in the year. I didn't vote Hooded Menace, as I got the album after the poll but I love that album after 3 listens.
I kinda hope CC doesn't place in the top ten as someone suggested. It was a good, dutiful Cannibal Corpse album, but nothing special.
Wishing Ram to place in top ten but doubting it. Such a good album.
Krallice would be nice -- I'm not an expert on them but a girl I saw temporarily recommended them and I loved what I heard.
― NINO CARTER, Tuesday, 15 January 2013 15:35 (twelve years ago)
I loved the Christian Mistress disc as I was totally into the heavy metal revivalism of 2011 but #1 would be way high.

Hmmm... the number ones in previous years aren't all that inspiring. I like Electric Wizard as much as the next stonerdoomhead but Black Masses isn't exactly anything new is it?
― besides Sunny Real Estate (dog latin), Tuesday, 15 January 2013 16:06 (twelve years ago)
That Hammers of Misfortune album from last year is great, I still go back to it. Black Masses is a perfectly good Electric Wizard, therefore better than a lot of other bands, and a consensus pick I would think.

"Electric Wizard record"

9 Aluk Todolo- Occult Rock 195 Points, 16 Votes, One #1 http://www.hardmusic.cz/pr-img/125/1/max/3009d9e2-b0ee-4b2c-9e74-e91e8ef71478.jpghttp://open.spotify.com/album/4SyoYWUSnMVy3sHIx7tUishttp://www.last.fm/music/Aluk+Todolo?http://www.amortout.com/aluktodolo/img/thewire2012.jpg
With the goal to create a timeless, organic mix of krautrock’s strangeness and black metal’s coldness, combining Striborg with Faust, Burzum with This Heat, S.V.E.S.T. with Paul Chain, or Ildjarn with Can, Aluk Todolo conjures rabid obsessive rhythms and abyssal disharmonic guitars, subliminal spiritualist vibrations and bizarre, magick summonings. By reducing psychedelic improvisation to a bare, telluric instrumentation, and basking in the archaic rawness of lo-fi production, the trio elaborates on an audio ritual meant to be monolithic and stabbing, hypnotic but unpredictable, minimalist yet teeming. Aluk Todolo features members from the legendary, underground black metal acts, Diamatregon (tUMULt) & Vediog Svaor (Paragon International).

7 Krallice- Years Past Matter 213 Points, 16 Votes One #1 http://f0.bcbits.com/z/16/96/1696978733-1.jpghttp://open.spotify.com/album/5pnUhJJEGMRlqxVZ0TiGMH
Krallice is a New York-based black metal project featuring the guitar work of notorious progressive/experimental metal musicians Colin Marston (Gorguts, Behold… the Arctopus, Byla, Indricothere and others) and Mick Barr (Crom-Tech, Orthrelm, Octis and others), along with Nick McMaster and Lev Weinstein of death metal band Astomatous. The musical style of Krallice could be described as fairly clean by black metal standards, with long, dynamic songs containing some distinctive progressive metal influences. They’ve been compared to Weakling in some ways, although their music focuses much more on progressive song structures and less on the dissonant droning of Weakling’s Dead as Dreams. They released a self-titled album in 2008 on Profound Lore Records and a follow-up, Dimensional Bleedthrough, on the same label the next year. Double vinyl releases of the two albums were put out by Gilead Media in 2009 and 2010, respectively. A third album, Diotima, followed in 2011, once again on Profound Lore; a vinyl edition, once again by Gilead Media, shipped around September 20, 2011. An EP entitled Orphan of Sickness was also released in 2011 (for free), as was a flexi-disc single entitled Traditional, which shipped with the September 2011 issue of Decibel Magazine. The band’s fourth album, Years Past Matter, was self-released in August 2012. A vinyl edition will be released by Gilead Media sometime around October 2012.
I'm lucky to still have a job. Abstract black metal is like crack candy to ILX metalheads! So anyone knows if Christian Mistress plan to tour this year? They did a brief Europe tour last spring and then nothing.

Frank Ocean is going to be number one.

Old Man Gloom (In Full: The Old Man Gloom Alien Simian Defence League) is a sludge band, with many ambient and soundscape elements. They originally formed in 1999 in Santa Fe, New Mexico, United States, but are now based in Massachusetts. The group was formed by Aaron Turner and Santos Montano. By the release of their first album (Meditations in B), Old Man Gloom expanded to include two new members, creating the following and current lineup:Aaron Turner (Isis, House of Low Culture): guitar, vocalsNate Newton (Converge, Doomriders): guitar, vocalsCaleb Scofield (Cave In, Zozobra): bass, vocalsSantos Montano (Zozobra): drumsIn 2001, a year after the release of Meditations in B, the band released two albums simultaneously: Seminar II: The Holy Rites of Primitivism Regressionism and Seminar III: Zozobra. For these records, Luke Scarola joined to use electronics. On Seminar II, Steven Brodsky of Cave In wrote the lyrics for one song, and Agnostic Blunt (aka Jay Randall of Agoraphobic Nosebleed) also contributed on electronics. On August 24, 2004, Christmas was released. After an eight year silence, Old Man Gloom returned with their most recent album, No.

Nice. Wonder if that means Gaza sneaks all the way into the top 5. Couldn't be...
― anonanon, Tuesday, 15 January 2013 17:14 (twelve years ago)
Funny cognitive distortion while reading this as I've been taking a break from metal (at least giving my long suffering wife a break) and am listening to a bunch of glossy/gothy post-punk, and new albums by old popsters Pet Shop Boys, The Fixx, Men Without Hats, Ultravox and neo-proggers Saga, ha ha.

Coincidentally, my friend Collin Jordan at Boiler Room mastered both #s 4 and 5. And the Royal Thunder.

― Mordy, Tuesday, 15 January 2013 18:19 (twelve years ago)
I like the Swans, but that's ridiculous. I didn't expect to see them in the top 3 any more than Rush, who at least have traditionally had a metalhead following.
― Fastnbulbous, Tuesday, 15 January 2013 18:25 (twelve years ago)

It looks like a bunch of folks really need to hear Windhand and Dragged Into Sunlight! I really thought they'd go 3-4.
― Fastnbulbous, Tuesday, 15 January 2013 18:31 (twelve years ago)
Forgot to vote for Royal Thunder – my bad. I don't think Dragged into Sunlight are going to place. A little too abrasive for most people, I'd guess. Number one will probably be Converge.
Anyway, I've been posting less because I feel like there's too much nonmetal on here, but I don't want to be That Guy (although I guess I just became him).
― Bound by Habitrails (J3ff T.), Tuesday, 15 January 2013 18:33 (twelve years ago)
too much nonmetal? There's like two records out of 40 - Swans and Goat.
I've just been quiet because I have nothing to say about most of the list; I either didn't hear it or wasn't much into it. Though I should say, listening to the Agalloch after hearing it live opened it up for me. Probably should have had it on my ballot.
― EZ Snappin, Tuesday, 15 January 2013 18:39 (twelve years ago)

Maybe people forgot the Van Halen came out this year..
I was the only one that voted for it, and it was my #1. Long live Wolfie!!! lol
― SeanWayne, Tuesday, 15 January 2013 19:14 (twelve years ago)
Yeah I'm mystified how so many people thought Goat fit in here. They're psychedelic afro-cuban pop. I do love that album, but didn't vote for it here.
I successfully predicted 7 of the top 10, and the exact placings of 5 of them. The ones that didn't make it:
59 Royal Thunder (under Rush at 57, ha ha ha ha)61 Windhand95 Dragged Into Sunlight
The last two weren't necessarily high in my ballot, I just thought they were really up many ILXers' alleys. Overall a good poll, thanks.
― Fastnbulbous, Tuesday, 15 January 2013 19:15 (twelve years ago)
Hey sean could you send me my ballot via ILXmail when you get the chance?
― Drugs A. Money, Tuesday, 15 January 2013 19:19 (twelve years ago)
If folks were gonna vote for an obscure doom reissue, why didn't they vote for Pagan Altar's Judgement of the Dead instead? It's their first actual album rather than crappy sounding demos. Is it because it came out a bit later in October and for some reason got less hype?
― Fastnbulbous, Tuesday, 15 January 2013 19:19 (twelve years ago)
there is A LOT of non metal on here.. Mars Volta? Smashing Pumpkins? METZ?!?! Swans pass maybe, but Goat and these others? But maybe the same can be said for Van Halen or Rush? idk..
― SeanWayne, Tuesday, 15 January 2013 19:20 (twelve years ago)

My Ballot - in hindsight, I wish I put Converge lower - they're hardcore (but they don't sully Metal's name - make sense?) ...
1. Christian Mistress - Possession2. Dawnbringer - Into The Lair Of The Sun God3. Pallbearer-Sorrow and Extinction4. Killing Joke - MMXII (I know - probably not tru-metal - but dang it rocked hard - SWANS rocked hard too, but yet I didn't put them down - I'm as puzzled ... )5. Satan's Wrath- Galloping Blasphemy (seriously, I was only vote?)6. Gojira - L'Enfant Sauvage7. Grand Magus - The Hunt8. High On Fire- De Vermis Mysteriis9. Golden Void - Golden Void10. Pig Destroyer- Book Burner11. Nachtmystium- Silencing Machine 12. Enslaved- Riitiir13. Converge- All We Love We Leave Behind14. Baroness- Yellow&Green15. Agalloch - Faustian Echoes EP16. Graveyard - Lights Out17. Witchcraft- Legend18. Kadavar - Kadavar19. Testament- Dark Roots Of Earth20. Motorpsycho & Ståle Storløkken - The Death Defying Unicorn
Bubbling under were Venomous Maximus, UFOMAMMUT, Meshuggah, Royal Thunder, Rush, Yakuza, Van Halen - The Devil's Blood may have legitimately made my list, but man that's 2011 ...
― BlackIronPrison, Tuesday, 15 January 2013 20:26 (twelve years ago)
sort of making my way through the whole list: the prospect of a new hour-long enslaved record seemed exhausting at first because i can't even remember a note of of axioma ethica odini, but so far riitiir is... really awesome? heavy, jazzy, katatonia-y in all the right places

Christian Mistress/Witch Mountain supports give Castle a listen. Swans voters might like Liars, X-TG, Fontanelle and a ton of other non-metal shit.

I usually latch on to one or two metal albums in a given year. This year it's Christian Mistress. Love the poll, though I didn't vote.
― o. nate, Wednesday, 16 January 2013 21:13 (twelve years ago)

the former is awesome, latter hasn't arrived. also irrationally sad that "Fuck I'm Dead" seems to not have physical copies of their cds, just mp3s (unless I'm missing something).
Lotsa moaning about what is and isn't metal. I thought I saw even xhuxk complaining about it somewhere (maybe not above) which is ironic. All of it amuses me... I used to joke that whatever I liked had to be metal but I am going to just start believing it.

finished basically listening to the records i was interesting in and:
- hey, goat's world music is pretty great, isn't it? think i can fold weird groovy hard rock into my metal this year
- i've been meaning to listen to the black breath record all year and holy shit i've been missing out
- i also sorted through a few individual list and i got to say it is totally exhilarating to experience grave doing their thing for album no. 10293840
- leave it to the blackened death bands to totally surprise me: weapon's embers and revelations is really good and i don't feel like i'm done listening to it at all
- my opinion of death/doom is mostly "gtfo doom"; this especially applies to the asphyx record, which is pretty good but the doom sections are a slog imo. weird that i'm not experiencing that crushing boredom with the ahedonist record right now but maybe that's because it's a bunch of excellent death metal riffs stacked hypnotically

I thought there were more writers here who'd have voted in Pazz & Jop. With fewer people voting overall, it could have been a great opportunity to bring more attention to some metal. Maybe next year. Hope you all voted in the big ILX poll.
This poll was the first one that I saw Les Discrets, let alone seeing it nearly overtake Alcest. I'm enjoying it, even slipped it in on my ballot in the poll that ends today.

Whoever told me last year's Incantation was awesome...was totally right. So good to hear raw death metal like this still, and their craft is still as tight as ever.
I'll never forget the time I saw them open for Nile in 2000. So dope, and people were throwing chairs during their cover of Death's "Scream Bloody Gore".

also I've now acquired the Dawnbringer...I love how this is a 'neo-heavy metal' album that doesn't do what some of the others did and wear its influences strictly on its sleeve, but rather made something of their own. I love teh vocal harmonies too, has a real 70's rock vibe to it.

this was maybe the year I listened to the least metal ever (and just about none of it from 2012), so that's why I didn't vote. but I'm catching up a bit and am loving the pallbearer record so far. it's almost like a new asunder lp!
thanks for your work on this poll, guys!

that was 2011 for me (the not listening to a lot of metal). every time I go 4-5 months without listening to metal, it winds up creating more of a glut when I return to the fold, so NEVER AGAIN.

yeah but you do that with hip hop too, right?

I missed the Pazz & Jop deadline. Also don't feel like my vote over there means much...

Well, just 5 more people giving Christian Mistress another 40 points would have moved it from #251 to 119, a very respectable position tied with Torche. If just one other person put, say, Witch Mountain at the top of their ballot it would have gone from 527 to 291. So yeah, it makes some sort of diff!

What the Quietus said about Aluk Todolo
An hour and a half of technically adept instrumental near-black metal with the metonymically beating heart of krautrock; Occult Rock has the potential to upset a lot of people – not in the way that Liturgy put people's corpse paint so continually and hilariously out of joint ("Wah! They're just soulless hipsters, they're not black metal at all, they're just play acting at it. Waaaah!!" like it's a fucking secret) but they too do seem primarily concerned with the transcendental nature of the black metal beast. The difference is that not only have this French trio served significant time in traditional black metal circles (playing in the likes of Diamatregon and Vediog Svaor) and spent years honing their craft, Occult Rock still carries that intangible undercurrent of nihilism and despair; 'I' might be ten minutes of blast-beat black metal channelled through Hawkwind's third eye, yet 'VII' sounds like early Can haunting a deserted, plague struck village, and it totally fucking works.

According to EM review-scores (fed through my secret math), the album of the year was actually Cattle Decapitation's Monolith of Inhumanity.

I keep forgetting to check out that CAttle Decap...
― SeanWayne, Wednesday, 23 January 2013 18:53 (twelve years ago)
It isn't my thing, necessarily, but I recognize that it's really good – a couple decibel writers I was chatting with at the show on Saturday were saying that it was their pick.

162 Early Graves - Red Horse - 10 points, 1 vote

yes!!.. and that one vote was mine I believe. i wish the production was a bit better, things get a little too washed together, but the songs are ripping! They crush live too. they're about to go out with Nails here pretty soon
