...and this is ultimately the reason I dislike Mick Hucknall. Not because of his music, not because of his appearance, just because the guy comes across as being painfully arrogant into himself a little too much. He's always quick to namedrop some vintage soul star or other who claims he has a great voice, or how many "total babes" he ploughed at the height of his fame.

Our colleagues at BBC News are live blogging the shock resignation of the Pope. In 2008 the Vatican, of course, forgave John Lennon for this interview "How does a Beatle live ?" with Evening Standard reporter ; Maureen Cleave. Later coverage of this piece gave rise to the "Bigger than Jesus" controversy. The Vatican in 2008 concluded that Lennon was "showing off".

Of course Stuart "I could bore for England" Maconie is there.http://pbs.twimg.com/media/BC0qOBhCEAE0cmk.jpgAlthough I thought this would have been too modern for him...

Old fart totally out of touch with what an early 21st century audience wants to hear, standing next to Stuart Maconie, etc..

I'd like to think that the Pope deliberately chose today to resign just to piss off Mick Hucknall.

I'm thinking back to when I first came across the Stereophonics... it was when I was listening to the Brit Awards 1997 on the radio, and during one of the breaks, the DJ (I forgot who it was - Jo Whiley sounds likely though) played 'A Thousand Trees'. Incredible to think that they got quite a deal of hype around the time of 'A Thousand Trees'/'Local Boy In The Photograph', but around the time of 'Mr Writer' it was clear that most folks were losing interest. Their commercial peak was undoubtedly Performance And Cocktails, but I remember hearing their first album and thinking "hmm... this is a bit samey/patchy".

I'm feeling that near-total American solidarity about having zero idea what Stereophonics sound like

I am so envious of you right now! I had to put up with listening to a lot of Stereophonics when I still lived at home thanks to my sister.

I would give anything to not know what 'A Thousand Trees', 'Local Boy in Photograph', and 'Mr Writer'* sound like.

Actually, there was a woman I was keen on once, until I found out she was a Stereophonics fan.

Meat and potatoes rock, where the meat is Burger King horseburgers and the potatoes are reconstituted starch.
― Ned Raggett, Monday, 11 February 2013 15:18 (twelve years ago)
Horseburgers? This isn't even dogburgers. And the mashed potatoes are day old wallpaper paste.

Kind of like a British Train.

Nah, that's almost praise on a sliding scale.

I'm not familiar with Train, so I just listened to one of their songs. The one with the grape/wine farm in the video. Teeth-grittingly awful.

I'm so sorry, I didn't intend for anyone to listen to Train!
― Ulna (Nicole), Monday, 11 February 2013 15:35 (twelve years ago)
An irl case of Train in vain

xp No, it's OK. Listening to shitty music now and then makes me appreciate good music more.

This is very much OTM. There's nothing wrong with "meat and potatoes rock" when the meat and the potatoes are of high quality.

according to my friend M Hucknall is now in the building to watch Kraftwerk do whatever album they're doing tonight
