Amerie. Toxic just behind, but I expect it to garner maybe half the votes.

Pauper Management Improved (Sanpaku), Friday, 25 January 2013 01:05 (twelve years ago)

It's a tossup between the last three for me.

besides Sunny Real Estate (dog latin), Friday, 25 January 2013 01:06 (twelve years ago)

Kind of interesting how halfway through ILM departs from the rest of the world and sets course for its own planet in the cosmos.

questino (seandalai), Friday, 25 January 2013 01:08 (twelve years ago)

Any of the first four. After that I'd rather not hear any of them again.

Going "Work It" because it needs some love.

Missy Elliott, "Work It"
Todd Terje, "Inspector Norse"
Britney Spears, "Toxic"
Hercules and Love Affair, "Blind"
Rihanna, "Umbrella"

Gnarls Barkley, "Crazy"
Taylor Swift, "You Belong With Me"

Zero Dark 33⅓: The Final Insult (Eric H.), Friday, 25 January 2013 01:24 (twelve years ago)

"Umbrella" and "Crazy" my least favorite songs.

the little prince of inane false binary hype (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 25 January 2013 01:31 (twelve years ago)

The Frankie Knuckles remix of "Blind" has become one of my perennials, so I might vote for it over "212" and "Work It."

Blind
Work It
Inspector Norse
1 Thing
Toxic
You Belong With Me

the little prince of inane false binary hype (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 25 January 2013 01:32 (twelve years ago)

gtfo with taylor swift for once and for all i mean jesus

Zero Dark 33⅓: The Final Insult (Eric H.), Friday, 25 January 2013 01:37 (twelve years ago)

still love p much all these tracks

flopson, Friday, 25 January 2013 01:39 (twelve years ago)

1. Missy Elliott, "Work It" - easily #1
2. Britney Spears, "Toxic" - flawless production
3. Gnarls Barkley, "Crazy" - why not?
4. Amerie, "1 Thing" - almost forgot about this one...
4. Rihanna - Umbrella
6. Todd Terje, "Inspector Norse" - such good vibes
6. Hercules and Love Affair, "Blind" - great rhythm and bass section on this track
...
8. Taylor Swift, "You Belong With Me"
9. Girl Unit, "Wut" - wut. baffled.
10. Azealia Banks, "212" - ugh

Eggs and the marketing board behind them, Friday, 25 January 2013 01:49 (twelve years ago)

Like most of these. I didn't get "Wut" two years ago and still don't. And I've always thought "Toxic" was a mess. Have to go with "Work It" in the end.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 25 January 2013 02:01 (twelve years ago)

yeah wut definitely the worst of these, but still dope

flopson, Friday, 25 January 2013 02:04 (twelve years ago)

"work it" is the best for me

teledyldonix, Friday, 25 January 2013 02:43 (twelve years ago)

"Inspector Norse" at the moment, "1 Thing" or "Work It" normally. Don't like "Umbrella," really don't like "Crazy." Don't think I know three of these.

clemenza, Friday, 25 January 2013 06:21 (twelve years ago)

"Wut" winning was a travesty. I blame lex for momentarily throwing the ilm hivemind out of orbit by pop-stanning for a dirge.

"Umbrella" for me. "Work It" and "1 Thing" both very close behind.

Tim F, Friday, 25 January 2013 06:49 (twelve years ago)

I thought "Happy House" had won its year.
Anyway it's "Blind" for me, with "Work It" as runner up.

LeRooLeRoo, Friday, 25 January 2013 07:06 (twelve years ago)

"wut" beat "hard in da paint," which would look really bizarre in this group

d'eejban (J0rdan S.), Friday, 25 January 2013 07:12 (twelve years ago)

the wut/hard in da paint one-two might have been my favourite ilm result of all time - it made our list look so distinct without sacrificing the fact that they were populist classics of their genres. was that the year everyone was bemoaning the lack of decent chart pop to vote for? the travesty is "crazy" beating "what you know", what the fuck was everyone thinking.

anyway i think

1. WORK IT - missy is a legend of our time and this def falls into her (very long) imperial phase
2. UMBRELLA - jesus i played this so incessantly in 2007; the only one of these that actually has no rivals for the extent it dominated its year
3. 1 THING - crazy in love plus
4. YOU BELONG WITH ME - only about the 5th best song on its parent album, not even the best single, but still 10/10 classic because that's how great t-swift is. my favourite secret gay anthem of the past decade
5. TOXIC - only about the 6th best song on its parent album, not even the best single, i still maintain you can't dance to it, but still 10/10 headrush
6. WUT - pure beauty, still
7. 212 - shouldn't let azealia's inability to make another decent song make me forget how banging this is, how well it goes down at house parties etc
8. BLIND - it doesn't feel like a year-defining #1 but it's still excellent (we're still in 10/10 territory here), the bassline is one of the best of the past decade for sure
9. INSPECTOR NORSE - v pleased about it placing #1 this year but really there are several balearic anthems from the past few years i feel way more attached to. but like 9/10
10. CRAZY - incredibly boring then, incredibly boring now, the fact that it beat "what you know" only increases my contempt for it

lex pretend, Friday, 25 January 2013 07:35 (twelve years ago)

"Wut" still blows my mind every time I hear it

The Reverend, Friday, 25 January 2013 07:36 (twelve years ago)

the wut/hard in da paint one-two might have been my favourite ilm result of all time

srsly!

"wut" is very one trick to me. it's a nice trick but eh

d'eejban (J0rdan S.), Friday, 25 January 2013 07:37 (twelve years ago)

"toxic" is one of the best pop productions of the last 2 decades

d'eejban (J0rdan S.), Friday, 25 January 2013 07:38 (twelve years ago)

think I'm voting for Missy tho cause I was playing it a bunch the other day and it's still the most fun thing ever

songs on in the zone that are better than toxic: everytime, showdown, outrageous, brave new girl, early mornin, the answer, breathe on me, (i got that) boom boom

#deepbritneyalbumcuts

lex pretend, Friday, 25 January 2013 07:43 (twelve years ago)

"work it" is an amazing song but prob not even in my top 10 missy singles... in general i think this is a pretty underwhelming group of songs

all of them are pretty great in the grand scheme but there's only a few i'd still be excited to hear

d'eejban (J0rdan S.), Friday, 25 January 2013 07:43 (twelve years ago)

i should listen to that album

d'eejban (J0rdan S.), Friday, 25 January 2013 07:43 (twelve years ago)

as much as i love "212" and "video games" i definitely feel like last year got it the wrong way round putting them at 1 and 2, relegating "super bass" and "countdown" to 3 and 4

lex pretend, Friday, 25 January 2013 07:44 (twelve years ago)

definitely

The Reverend, Friday, 25 January 2013 07:45 (twelve years ago)

the #3 & #4 albums > the top two, too

The Reverend, Friday, 25 January 2013 07:45 (twelve years ago)

xp you definitely should. "(i got that) boom boom" features the ying yang twins, "outrageous" features r kelly, and "brave new girl" is like if daft punk ever wrote a pop song

"everytime" is britney's best ever song though. well apart from everything on blackout obv

lex pretend, Friday, 25 January 2013 07:45 (twelve years ago)

ugh i forgot about last year's album results, any of 2/3/4 should have beaten 1. most of the 77 should have beaten 1.

lex pretend, Friday, 25 January 2013 07:47 (twelve years ago)

if either "super bass" or "countdown" had won last year it would have had my vote here unhesitatingly

lex pretend, Friday, 25 January 2013 07:47 (twelve years ago)

I just revisited the whole 2011 tracks thread from beginning to end while listening to the playlist. I could be biased because I ran the thing that year, but it was the most quality eoy poll that's ever taken place on ilm. So many cool discoveries, lots of variety in the results, a fantastic top 10 (minus Kreayshawn, and maybe M83).

This year's was fun too (BRING IN THE KATZ!), but it seemed like there were fewer surprises.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 25 January 2013 07:51 (twelve years ago)

the top 2 last year was a travesty. i love "212"... i have no idea how "super bass" or "countdown" didn't win smh

d'eejban (J0rdan S.), Friday, 25 January 2013 07:52 (twelve years ago)

Several people admitted to leaving "Countdown" off their ballots because they voted for 4 in the album poll, which is o_O to me.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 25 January 2013 07:53 (twelve years ago)

adorn *snif*

O'Floyd rules! (Drugs A. Money), Friday, 25 January 2013 07:54 (twelve years ago)

Yeah, as much as I love the top 2 (songs I actually ranked on my mixed ballot), I suspect "Adorn" (which I left unranked) will be the track we look back on later and all lament not winning (many people already do).

Johnny Fever, Friday, 25 January 2013 07:55 (twelve years ago)

Several people admitted to leaving "Countdown" off their ballots because they voted for 4 in the album poll, which is o_O to me.

tbh "countdown" placing as highly as it did considering the beyoncé vote-splitting that went on was a testament to its power. beyoncé only lost because lesser girls like azealia and lana couldn't back their big hits up ;_; not B's fault she's overflowing with genius ;_;

lex pretend, Friday, 25 January 2013 07:56 (twelve years ago)

it's my fault, it was only #3 on my ballot too ;_; (xp)

O'Floyd rules! (Drugs A. Money), Friday, 25 January 2013 07:57 (twelve years ago)

'toxic' and '1 thing' are both majestic. Could not choose btw them.

pandemic, Friday, 25 January 2013 11:24 (twelve years ago)

If I'd have voted last year, I would've made sure my ballot had every single from 4 on it except "Countdown."

Zero Dark 33⅓: The Final Insult (Eric H.), Friday, 25 January 2013 12:55 (twelve years ago)

Voted Rihanna (the only song of hers I've ever really loved) - otherwise it would have been "212"

Raymond Cummings, Friday, 25 January 2013 13:01 (twelve years ago)

"You Belong With Me" is my fav song of the decade, so that, over "Umbrella", my second fav song of the decade

Euler, Friday, 25 January 2013 14:21 (twelve years ago)

I only vote for Rihanna singles that start with the letter http://www.emoticonswallpapers.com/avatar/logos/Superman-Logo.jpg

Zero Dark 33⅓: The Final Insult (Eric H.), Friday, 25 January 2013 14:26 (twelve years ago)

Blind, ahead of 1 Thing - very possibly because I recently heard the source of the 1 Thing sample and it's thrown my critical faculties all out.

It is terrible, but unlike gr8080, I think I actually hate it more now than 2 years ago.

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 30 January 2013 02:51 (twelve years ago)

OK after one listen each on various YouTubes:

"Wut": trippy techno bonkers. groovy!
"212": THE WORST RAPPER EVER. She sounds like such a brat. Like M.I.A. but worse. Just awful.
"Inspector Norse": Started out with a groovy DFA dance thing going on, but the music video kept having the guy talk over it, so I didn't really get the full effect.

"Wut" > "Inspector Norse" > "212"

Mr. Snrub, Wednesday, 30 January 2013 02:57 (twelve years ago)

Out of the last 3, "212" is my favorite.

that doesn't change my opinion that dancing to "Wut" is not anything I would ever want to do, in fact the entire time I would be annoyed and wishing someone would change the song to something that wasn't bad

Bel-Air the Fresh Prince, sitting in a chair (DJP), Wednesday, 30 January 2013 03:20 (twelve years ago)

You'd have to be the greatest dancer in the world to make "Wut" work on a dance floor.

Bel-Air the Fresh Prince, sitting in a chair (DJP), Wednesday, 30 January 2013 03:49 (twelve years ago)

I don't hate "Wut" I just think it's silly that it won the poll.

Also I think I was predestined to be a bit eye-rolly at its entire conceit because it felt like it was taking this idea that grime had had just in passing (see Low Deep's "Straight Flush"; Skepta's "Serious Thugs") and then beating it with a bat until all its limbs fell off.

Tim F, Wednesday, 30 January 2013 03:56 (twelve years ago)

I also see that there's not that much distinction between "Wut" and the slower parts of Tropical 2 which was far and away my favourite album of 2011, but the former just seems so much more hamfisted to me.

hahahahaha that is like the ILM version of this

crüt, Wednesday, 30 January 2013 04:09 (twelve years ago)

"crazy" has a faster bpm than "1 thing"?!?!

"you belong with me" has the second fastest bpm of all of these?!

lex pretend, Wednesday, 30 January 2013 07:20 (twelve years ago)

"1 thing" for sure. sounds fresh and invigorating every time i hear it.

charlie h, Wednesday, 30 January 2013 07:33 (twelve years ago)

i like about half of these songs.

charlie h, Wednesday, 30 January 2013 07:34 (twelve years ago)

"1 Thing" and "Inspector Norse" are the only ones I would want to hear right now.

billstevejim, Wednesday, 30 January 2013 07:45 (twelve years ago)

yeah, i think the fact that i could still listen to "1 thing" on repeat is a reflection of how well it's held up. the stuff i don't care for on that list ranges from bland (Taylor) to offensive (Britney).

charlie h, Wednesday, 30 January 2013 07:52 (twelve years ago)

most of these kinda meh

inspector norse
work it
toxic
1 thing
212
blind (never heard this)
you belong with me (never heard this)
wut
crazy
umbrella

coal, Wednesday, 30 January 2013 07:57 (twelve years ago)

1 Thing.

Taylor is shit. Sorry for the cheap shot. That is all.

azaera, Wednesday, 30 January 2013 08:31 (twelve years ago)

70bpm = 140bpm, just saying

dog latin, Wednesday, 30 January 2013 08:42 (twelve years ago)

1-10:

Amerie, "1 Thing"
Girl Unit, "Wut"
Todd Terje, "Inspector Norse"
Azealia Banks, "212"
Rihanna, "Umbrella"
Missy Elliott, "Work It"
Britney Spears, "Toxic"
Taylor Swift, "You Belong With Me"
Gnarls Barkley, "Crazy"
Hercules and Love Affair, "Blind"

A couple of these have definitely suffered from overexposure but the only one I don't particularly like is 'Blind', just can't deal with Antony's voice.

Gavin, Leeds, Wednesday, 30 January 2013 08:48 (twelve years ago)

People who don't like Wut need to get new ears

dog latin, Wednesday, 30 January 2013 09:02 (twelve years ago)

equal 1st:
Missy Elliott, "Work It"
Britney Spears, "Toxic"
Amerie, "1 Thing"
Hercules and Love Affair, "Blind"
Azealia Banks, "212"

6: Todd Terje, "Inspector Norse"

7: Girl Unit, "Wut"

equal 8:
Rihanna, "Umbrella"
Gnarls Barkley, "Crazy"

You Belong To Me I guess 10 but Taylor doesn't rly work for me

( ͡° ͜ʖ͡°) (sic), Wednesday, 30 January 2013 10:52 (twelve years ago)

Work It
1 Thing
Wut (it's just like dancing to Stay Fly or whatever)
Norse
212
...
Blind (for the Club and FK mixes not so much the tepid original)
Toxic
Crazy
Umbrella
...
...
...
You Belong With Squee

nashwan, Wednesday, 30 January 2013 10:52 (twelve years ago)

Kind of interesting how halfway through ILM departs from the rest of the world and sets course for its own planet in the cosmos

This stands out for me too. The first half up to Umbrella are boxes of tricks, but to my mind from then on we've settled for tracks that do one thing really well. Blind's somewhere in the middle

What's happened, is it fragmentation?

Ismael Klata, Wednesday, 30 January 2013 11:02 (twelve years ago)

- ilm changing and becoming larger - more posters who don't subscribe to the poptimism of early days
- pop changing for the worse circa 2008 - between then and now, what even were the ubiquitous equivalents of the 2002-07 winners? in 2010 the poll thread was full of people bemoaning the state of chart pop
- bit of luck - "call me maybe" was second this year, only takes a few voters who forgot/remembered to change that. ditto "super bass" last year, but "212" and "video games" were actually big hits, bigger than eg the beyoncé song that came 4th
- would argue that t-swift has more in common with the 2002-07 winners really

lex pretend, Wednesday, 30 January 2013 11:10 (twelve years ago)

Things like 212 manage to consolidate and crossover genre and taste gaps while still sounding "new", that's why it was popular.

dog latin, Wednesday, 30 January 2013 11:31 (twelve years ago)

inspector norse easy, it's the one furthest into the realm of music i listen to without ilm context/coloring

'blind' is a really weird winner in retrospect

ciderpress, Wednesday, 30 January 2013 14:46 (twelve years ago)

I love everything about "Blind" and I can't think of another song Antony sings on that I haven't detested

Bel-Air the Fresh Prince, sitting in a chair (DJP), Wednesday, 30 January 2013 14:47 (twelve years ago)

yeah i don't HATE antony's voice but i usually cannot get with it, but it works amazingly on "blind"

how is this possible

"you belong with me" wasn't very big in the uk

i know for a fact that coal has heard both it and "blind" though

lex pretend, Wednesday, 30 January 2013 16:57 (twelve years ago)

Bel-Air the Fresh Prince, sitting in a chair (DJP), Wednesday, 30 January 2013 17:06 (twelve years ago)

Bel-Air the Fresh Prince, sitting in a chair (DJP), Wednesday, 30 January 2013 17:11 (twelve years ago)

isn't it about time to end the pretend taylor swift is a genius era of ilm

that song is still better than 'wut' tho, which seems like it only would have value for torturing prisoners or something

iatee, Wednesday, 30 January 2013 17:14 (twelve years ago)

You Belong With Me is the only one I don't know too well.

❏❐❑❒ (gr8080), Wednesday, 30 January 2013 17:20 (twelve years ago)

Wut is the one that I think really didn't deserve to win its poll, I don't like Gnarls Barkley or Taylor Swift very much but at least they were massive pop hits that lots of people evidently liked.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 30 January 2013 17:26 (twelve years ago)

Man Wut is super cool, easily top 3

every dog latin has his day (Drugs A. Money), Wednesday, 30 January 2013 17:28 (twelve years ago)

"blind" and "inspector norse" aren't exactly massive pop hits

xp

lex pretend, Wednesday, 30 January 2013 17:28 (twelve years ago)

No, but they at least act like they are.

Zero Dark 33⅓: The Final Insult (Eric H.), Wednesday, 30 January 2013 17:29 (twelve years ago)

Blind and Inspector Norse are way better though.

If we'd done this in 2003 then Hey Ya would definitely have won, with Milkshake in 2nd place maybe.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 30 January 2013 17:42 (twelve years ago)

I think that's true.

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 30 January 2013 17:44 (twelve years ago)

interesting that the two instrumental winners are also the only two non-american winners

nashwan, Wednesday, 30 January 2013 22:14 (twelve years ago)

wonder (but not that much tbh) what is most likely to win in future out of

- vocal hit from outside US
- instrumental dance track from US
- any rock or guitar-led song at all

nashwan, Wednesday, 30 January 2013 22:20 (twelve years ago)

i still maintain you can't dance to it,

crazy, i have totally successfully danced to "toxic," many times

edit: except for crazy

monotony, Thursday, 31 January 2013 00:09 (twelve years ago)

Man, I don't think I'll ever get ''1 Thing''...I sort of missed it when it was a hit, caught up later, it's definitely COOL, I like the 'gobble gobble gobble' sounds and the general feeling of instability, but better than 'Toxic' and 'Umbrella'...? What am I missing exactly? It's just kind of, you know, a song.

Doctor Casino, Thursday, 31 January 2013 20:02 (twelve years ago)

I never heard the whole album

lol these results, I guess "Toxic" has not aged well for ppl

Ima R.A.E.D. (DJP), Thursday, 31 January 2013 21:12 (twelve years ago)

sad for "toxic" but it really had to be "1 Thing". The original is wonderfully commanding but I love the chillaxed siik remix too. real sad for amerie's career which seems to be forever in the doldrums. Am giving up hope of ever seeing the release of Cymatika Vol. 1

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 31 January 2013 21:30 (twelve years ago)

i think i actually like "take control" more than "1 thing" these days? i go back to it a lot more

and "1 thing" was never that much better than "why don't we fall in love"

lex pretend, Thursday, 31 January 2013 21:31 (twelve years ago)

pretty much any track on Because I Love It > 1 Thing. And 1 Thing is superamazing.

danzig, Thursday, 31 January 2013 21:34 (twelve years ago)

y'all realize I said that ppl latched onto "1 Thing" so hard that they didn't give her subsequent music a chance, not that she never released anything as good as "1 Thing" after that, right

I never heard the whole album

you should! he's not in full-on Blind disco diva mode on the other songs*, but does use the same kind of song-sensitive approach, not warbling in Johnsons mode. and the album is a big warm nostalgic house/disco hug.

* he's lead on three or four, BV on one or two

nashwan, Friday, 1 February 2013 10:31 (twelve years ago)

Hahaha I remember that poll. Hey Ya and Kid A won their respective polls and made the whole exercise kind of hilarious.

Matt DC, Friday, 1 February 2013 10:35 (twelve years ago)

Srsly though if you replaced 'Good Luck' with 'Romeo' and the !!! song with 'House of Jealous Lovers' that would be a pretty good summation of the first half of the 00s for me.

Matt DC, Friday, 1 February 2013 10:36 (twelve years ago)

haha i really like that 2003 top ten :/

nathey, Friday, 1 February 2013 10:43 (twelve years ago)

order should've been

1. never leave you
2. i luv u
3. milkshake
4. crazy in love
5. no good advice
6. in da club
7. good luck
[all above are 10/10 classics; massive gap now]
8. ignition remix [so weak]
9. hey ya [still never want to hear this again though it's not strictly awful i guess]
10. me and giuliani [who cares]

lex pretend, Friday, 1 February 2013 10:46 (twelve years ago)

ignition (remix) isn't just the best out of that 10 - its better than all the other poll winners too
