I like the idea of this thread, but the problem with it is that, unlike pop, dance, metal and hip-hop, music like this is by nature unhappy being categorised and lumped in with other styles so it's gonna be a bit difficult. Still, I'll make a point of keeping up and posting :-)
― besides Sunny Real Estate (dog latin), Friday, 25 January 2013 14:30 (twelve years ago)
The music itself is unhappy? It'll do what I bloody say. Not like genre is being forced upon anything - this thread is designed as a loose convocation of as wide a variety as possible of interesting or challenging music. The irony is that only your post ascribes any uniformity of character to potential inclusions.

― emil.y, Friday, 25 January 2013 14:48 (twelve years ago)
haha, no it's more that dance music, for instance, thrives on being categorised under banners, whereas a lot of rock-based acts don't like to feel they're a part of any scene and I think fans themselves might feel uncomfortable with "ah this new band i just discovered is ripe for the rolling rock thread". maybe not, i dunno... it's where the rolling thread format breaks down for me. I miss outloud.fm.
― besides Sunny Real Estate (dog latin), Friday, 25 January 2013 14:50 (twelve years ago)
Is this called the rolling rock thread? Embrace everything and trust that it will respond in kind. Not that it has a choice.
hen I get home I will check out those links :)
― imago, Friday, 25 January 2013 14:54 (twelve years ago)
I think dog latin's mistake comes from the assumption that this thread is for 'weird rock' or something. Which, you know, would find a home here, but is not what this is about.

Some tracks I loved from last year that I would have been blasting you all with in Outloud (RIP) but few if any other people got excited about:
LA Vampires and Maria Minerva - A Lover and a Friend (hipster housey)Hiss Golden Messenger - Blue Country Mystic (folky, discovered from the EOY nominations)Yori Horikawa - Bubbles (bubbly)Discoverer - Personal Clone (bladerunnerwave)Starring - the best (psych/noise covers of MOR hits seemed to be a thing this year)Mark McGuire - Surrogate Channels ("Adrenochrome" was my Emeralds jam this year, but MMG's under-the-radar EP was also great)Tenniscoats - Hikoki (twee post-rock odyssey)Collarbones - Hypothermia (reminds me of that Autre Ne Veut song, not as catchy but still cool)Sexy Fi - Pequeno Dictionário das Ruas (RIYL Latin American hipster shit, most "indie rock" thing on this list)Philipp Matalla - Space Line (more of that space disco I feast on)Astral Social Club - FRWRKZ RMRK (with Katy Perry!)Thousand Foot Whale Claw - Phobos (deep space synths)

yeah I think this thread has some value for stuff that slips thru the cracks. like I've been wanting to talk about humanbeast for a while, but not sure where to put them? rolling noise/punk/indie/psych don't really fit what they're doing. they came out of the providence noise/experimental scene but like many have moved into more cold electronic beat stuff, I guess ppl call it fake techno now? dreamy/screamy. after doing a few tapes they've got a proper full length coming out this year, live show is great.

This seems like as good a thread as any for this...
Cool PR guy Howard Wuelfing got me into a show from a band Cinema Cinema this past week, which was super nice of him since I am pretty much retired from musical musing. But I wanted to give them a little hype because the group was pretty impressive. Playing a Monday night opening for a local and with only a handful of attendees, the Brooklyn duo - a bald, bearded, bad-ass guitarist/vocalist and a hyper-kinetic drummer (and they're cousins!) - acted like it was still a matter of life or death.
The group obviously digs Black Flag and it wasn't just the fact the singer/six stringer had a Flag tee on. Or that they apparently toured with Greg Ginn. Though those two factoids make me wish I could compare the band to someone else, it would be inaccurate given the frantic, riff-spazz-riff-spazz-spazz-riff style of the guitarist. To be sure, there are much worse bands to ape.
I picked up an EP and the last CD the band put out entitled "Manic Children & The Slow Aggression." You can stream the whole album on their website. The disc - produced by legendary DC producer Don Zientara at the legendary Inner Ear Studios and self-released - is not quite as good as the show was because Cinema Cinema stuck to the thrash-pop live. Frankly the slower, quieter stuff where he eschews screaming for singing pales in comparison to when the two guys just lose their collective shit. Fortunately they do that a lot more than not.
Here's the video from the album. Fortunately it's for an uptempo track (I think they know where their bread is toasted).
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mwQVFg3N3gY
Apparently the band will play anywhere they are allowed to plug in and they play out in NYC, Brooklyn and northern NJ relatively often. I recommend seeing Cinema Cinema if the description or recorded stuff is even a little appealing to you because they killed it live.

it was kinda an attempt at zoning in on the post-hipster zeitgeist, rolling off to the forest was an attempt at kinda head-nodding towards various emerging trends while also repping for big knut hamsun whos novels seemed to be part of the thing as well. thread didnt really turn out to be good for much although i think it was the first place that 'new for u' showed up on ilx, small distinctions i guess...
anyway david markson, spiritual poverty, early 80s wastelands, 'gaspard de le nuit' and roxy music playing in the background of parties, no one owns a laptop anymore, the do not touch them cassette on forced nostalgia, eugene ludins and disparate scando landlovers all went by unmemorialized, willing to start afresh with something less ambitious and less vague maybe the sound of icebergs melting idk
― future crimes (Lamp), Tuesday, 29 January 2013 23:47 (twelve years ago)
"Rolling..." was one of my favourite recent ILM threads because of the clear sense of an underlying curatorial vision. But because that vision felt so personal, I was never sure whether the stuff I posted really fit in.
Alternatively: my understanding is that this thread is a big tent and doesn't preclude more targeted explorations of any particular aesthetic.

love the diachronic/internoise/island-of-misfit-death-disco slant of the thread, so I’m gonna run w/that f/a minute and add Colin Newman’s new-to-me melted-genre nod Troisieme from lol ’80. could prob. go in this threadbut it’s such a sweet mess of proto-techno stomp, martial guitar + drums from the ghost of Swans future, rinky piano plonking, sax lost in reverb, Fripp-ish guitar, and pop vox w/ hints of Bowie damage that it snaps in here w/out effort, so w/e: http://youtu.be/fNEkicBxe2o

Profligate - Conditioning Trench (Outmode Remix): Not Not Fun recs should have their own corner office itt, and lately I’ve been digging Profligate’s techno-pop-alt-interzone-noise-bangers from last year’s Videotape EP. the straight toons are okay, but the remixes bring the broken wonder that nestles nicely w/ Mexican blood-sucking cheerleader anthems. Conditioning Trench in partic swings a manic, ominous bounce that attains the elusive toga party/suicide kiosk ratio alluded to by EIII: http://youtu.be/POr-dw5Bl7o
Profligate - Videotape (DJ mdmHEY Remix): starts off w/soothing factory churn, slides into atonal industrial techno, and then takes the last four minutes stumbling into melting-head ambient for all your dystopian needs. I’m sure there’s an electro-smog corner somewhere itt: http://youtu.be/SXMeZ_w4eFY

― Drugs A. Money, Thursday, 7 February 2013 06:22 (twelve years ago)
so yeah, speaking of space rock w/ black metal vocals, was pleased to hear pinkish black copping that feel on "tell her I'm dead". PB get a lotta comparisons to suicide for some reason which I guess is gonna happen when you play repetitive fuzzed out keyboard shit, but just cuz you use a whammy bar doesn't mean you need to mention van halen. if suicide were desaturated 1950s rock filtered thru urban future shock then pinkish black is hi-def 1850s baroque shot into the milky way. there's something playful/cartoonish in the music, which is nice compared to the usual blacker-than-thou nonsense, and tho I get their cred w/ the metal crowd, they're jammed sideways between genre cracks and straining towards the sky like some silver apples/rainbow/hawkwind mashup, yup def time travelers and btw check out this reet vid.

― unprepared guitar (Edward III), Thursday, 7 February 2013 17:32 (twelve years ago)
Pinkish Black are less Suicide now (not that it was ever huge, as Edward points out) or anything else in particular and more something entirely new. Definitely some heavier krautrock in the drumming but the keys and vocals are confidently carving out their own space and sound. If the live versions are anything to go by the new record is gonna be amazing, but I don't expect as warm a reception from the metal community. The vaguely metal bit of their mix of influences has been steadily disappearing over the past year, though they are still loud and intense as hell.
But take everything I say with a grain of salt. I've quickly lost any sense of proportion when it comes to these guys and am straight up cheerleading for them these days.

William Bennett’s latest performance-art project Cut Hands surfaces in at least four different threads (world music, noise, mutant techno and DJ mix), so I’m dragging his increasingly prestigious mongrel squall to squat w/its kindred freaks itt. musically, Bennett’s bolting together ambient, industrial, world music and post-techno into a suggestive but too-restrained clunk ‘n drone, but I’m willing to entertain the possibility of advanced-level prankster trolling via Merchant/Ivory-in-leather-trousers mockery. conceptually, Cut Hands seems to be an intentionally overloaded bag o’ signifiers w/ the interpretive Ouroboros expected from a white “racist” provocateur reverently presenting so-quantized-it’s-gonna-crack “trad” Afro-tribal music alternately sprinkled w/ both skronk and schlock and framed in 19th-century dark-continent tripe that’s juggled w/ post-colonial critique (Cut Hands, ffs) and performance-theory gloss. the joke is essentially so all-encompassing that it implodes into synthetic sincerity, but these three tunes are cool, so w/e:
Backlash: http://youtu.be/6pTA3UfS-YgShut Up and Bleed: http://youtu.be/wdakwL8cfNcBia Mintatu: http://youtu.be/1gZwk3ia7w0
I’ve been meaning to write about Portal f/ a while, so I’m gonna claim their new rec Vexovoid f/ the folk-atrocity gallery before it mistakenly finds its way to the rolling metal thread. all four Portal recs are great, and w/ Vexovoid Portal continue to furrow obsessively towards an elusive Jandek/Burzum/Merzbow continuum that drives them to vomit endless variations of lysergic sewer-metal. I think these kooks grokked a ruined map in Kerry King’s solos and used it to build a horribly misshapen template of groaning-collapse guitars, intermittent and asynchronous drums possibly from a Roland that's been smashed w/ a bat, and goddamn-the-sun vox that collectively power-ooze w/ meth urgency. Portal don’t “rock” so much as they lurch and sink and swell, concocting noise/psych/jazz/metal that’s arguably awful instead of avant-garde, but idgaf ‘cause this is the tr00 death-ambient shit-show that I need to spin f/hours to quiet multiple brain fevers.

Posted on one of the Dead C threads, showing it how its done yet again!
― xyzzzz__, Saturday, 23 February 2013 09:41 (twelve years ago)
iirc hand amputation was employed by (some) Euro colonists to discipline African workers for failing to meet production quotas during the 19th and early 20th century. "critique" is prob. too blunt f/Bennett's MO, and while "Cut Hands" foregrounds colonial violence, I think Bennett generally portrays violence as a conduit to truth, and in this particular context as an essential if problematic ingredient to 20th-century African musical contribution (perhaps pushing against Adorno's views on jazz). in any event, I think he's more interested in fostering difference than ideology, making him more trickster than activist. my only ish w/the project is the sketchbook quality of the tunes, which are both too short and oddly stiff (w/drums that sound sampled and sequenced rather than played). I also suspect that Black Mamba's turn towards new age gloop is the result of an intentional play against type f/ added frisson, which is interesting but academic. IMO the entire project should've been built w/Backlash as the cornerstone, but atm noize is critical to my mental health, so grain o' salt etc.

surprised to hear heavy influence of critically loathed breakcore/chiptune (names none dare speak) + liberal chunks of mutant techno, hipster house, Imminent Starvation/Converter, Space Streakings, Fuck Buttons, Mindflayer, Pan Sonic/Vladislav Delay, Shit 'n Shine, Brainiac/Six Finger Satellite, Not Not Fun, Heatsick, Dan Deacon, Black Dice, Dominick Fernow, Digital Hardcore, etc. (Harms inadvertently drags everything under the FT banner, but w/e.)
"fake techno" seems a bit #seapunk/#vaporwave f/shit that's been building f/ over thirty years, but at least won't give the purists a collective stroke like "hipster house" (not to badmouth stroke-gifting to purists). Mincemeat, Mutwawa & Humanbeast are entertaining enough tho & fit the thread.

EZ guess:
"fake techno" a kind of fuck-off notion analogous w/ the vehement olde tyme punk-rock disavowal of playing/enjoying/aesthetically taking part in rock 'n roll to psychologically demolish its accreted/ponderous traditions and clear the maximum amount of cultural space f /new endeavors (negativespacecore).
tl;dr:
my toxic-distillation-cartoon-takeaway from "fake techno": techno has an obsessive next-level/futurist narrative that's "progressive" but also a fucking drag b/c it's so conservatively maintained. this DNA-level code is an engine of sonic innovation, but also breeds cultish trainspotting fuckwad frenzy, curdles techno production into joyless, cold-war creepcraft, and at its very worst plays out like a perpetual-motion-Fleshlight-lubed-w/-Axe-dialectic-to-doucheville. you might say, then, that fake-techno-as-wave-manque is willing to pass on the fruits of techno's cultural capital for a license to royally fuck shit up, accepting the inevitability of general mockery, accusations of ineptitude and lack of recognition from the lol gatekeepers of techno proper (whoever the fuck they are, idk this is myth/#artdrone/making-shit-up-as-I-go). (EIII as we speak getting ready to disavow any mention of negativespacecore and wave manque.)
ps: I really like techno, but I'm an old way off the demographic chart f/ Mincemeat, so w/e. they're prob. just blowing shit up f/ laffs and good f/ them.

Fake Techno's a term I used to describe my music starting back a couple years ago. I was working with a lot of effects and feedback loops trying to approximate the structure and sounds of techno, and it sounded good but without drum machines, synths, music making stuff, it didn't really work. It wasn't noise but it wasn't techno so I decided it was the fake version of techno.
Dude no just keep workin at it or go back to yr feedback fx and loops (blaugh)

Oh, are Nought not still going or is the "timetravelly" in reference to the thread title?
I assumed they would keep on gigging only in London and never releasing anything forever. I prefer to imagine that the one album that does exist doesn't exist as it was such a pale shadow of their live selves, so I guess that was a good decision in a way.
Please get a time machine and see their late 90s trio lineup live, before the first drummer broke his arm and the bassist/double-bassist was replaced by a hardcore dude and the album was sat on for years; must've seen them ten times in two years, counting the ever-growing length of Ignatius, longer longer every gig before the drill came in...
(At that point they were quite tightly intertwined with Camp Blackfoot, who I believe imago is aware of. Suspect there was some bad blood at some point though. I'm not who I was then either. And, sorry to wander in. I'm not really sure what musical essence this thread is a quest for, so it's been on my to-do list to spend a spare hour or two listening to all the youtubes until I work it out, but here I am just babbling away anyway.)

Nought are very much still going, possibly better than ever - saw a fantastic gig just the other week, with Alex Ward (ex Camp Blackfoot) and his new project Dead Days Beyond Help. Timetravelly was the fact that Redrag is from some time ago, as you say. Don't think there was any bad blood as such, and the former Camp Blackfoot core have put together an excellent and vv strange CD of Camp Blackfoot-y new material to be released later this year.

Like many of my contributions itt, I have no idea whether or not this belongs here or on psych/drone, but this is kind of alright cool; Mexican band puts their demo on bandcamp, calls themselves experimental-drone-noise-psychedelic, but mostly just sounds like loud earnest instrumental garage rock, though this has a pleasing high pitched noise over top which kind of gives it a bit of a weird vibe:

LA Vampires + Ital – A Woman is a Woman: http://youtu.be/XwTgxTWpBUQLA Vampires + Ital – Tons of Love: http://youtu.be/PgrtnZvbRXk (always thought Mr. Ital was pushing a PCP-based Dr. Moreau gambit to see how much funk and gospel he could rip out of house’s core in the same fashion as no-wave musicians attempting to strip the blues out of their rock [quite a bit, as it turns out, but to the predictably diminishing returns of all self-amputation sprees]).
while we're here, another mutant almost-post-house pick (sry f/old):
Doldrums – I'm Lost in My Head: http://youtu.be/frEQqPK5Gks
(prefer to think of this as veiled/mutant drum ‘n bass tbh, needs a Paradox remix stat).
have also been meaning to post a couple of the musicbox-kissed-with-a-hammer hymns warbling away in Maria Minerva’s last rec:
Maria Minerva – The Star: http://youtu.be/t87xcEu451EMaria Minerva – Coming of Age: http://youtu.be/cDKYT6ZNl2E
(A+ f/ The Star, which glorps a handful of Residents over tweaked pop.)

putting this in time travel because this band totally made me feel like 1988i went to see bitchitronics friday night, and the 2nd opening band was radar eyes, which is tagged all wrong in the link below -- not psychedelic at all by my standards, somewhat frosty/noisy cerebral rock might be a little more accurate?it was my first time seeing them -- to me they kind of sounded like a hybrid of the church and the verlaines? i dunno. maybe someone else. definitely late 80s vocals. they're not new around here or anything, i just never saw them before. regretting that! anyway iirc they played this song and i enjoyed it http://radareyes.bandcamp.com/track/dreaming-of-giants

Been listening to Justin Walter's new album (Lullabies & Nightmares), which has just come out on Kranky. Lots of super-nice synth loops and trumpety sounds, good ambient music to work to imo.

No idea where to put this because blues control has been ALL over the place, but I just picked up valley tangents today and it's all over the place in a good way. At least IMO. I found it in the "experimental" section ?! Pretty straight ahead jams to me. Recommended!

Blues Control are such a genuinely odd band. I'd probably say that my favorite release from them that I've heard was A Full Tank but I'm not even sure I've listened to that the whole way through. My favorite track:

yeah abrasion is part of the equation there but when she jumps around I start jumping around in sympathetic response and that always gets the party going... and not to get all muso about it but she's not just screeching randomly, there's a v strong & real adherence of the vocals to the krazy rhythms and that's harder to do than it looks, which is maybe akin to saying you simply MUST admire the delicate form of the person gently tapping a ten penny nail into yr ear
so yeah they're def not for everybody, maybe just me + sarahel

they play philly fairly often due to profligate affiliation, think they were trying to squeeze out dates in order to make it to the west coast, but it does impair the ilxor-to-show ratio for this tour

If anyone's after some sinister heavy drone music, the new Kwaidan album is really amazing. It's one of the guys from Locrian and one of the guys from Zelienople plus some other Chicago bloke. Really abyssal sounds, like peering into the deepest of wells and feeling like the darkness down there simply has no end. Album is called Make All The Hell Of Dark Metal Bright. Sorry if that image is a bit big, but it's got a really lovely cover too imo.

There's a pretty good album of punky improvised music right here on this Bandcamp page by this Argentinian band called Ricarda Cometa that's free to download and worth giving a whirl if you like that sort of thing (amazing cover art too, I should really post that on that other thread). There's a bit of wonky kumbia going on, lots of scratchy guitar & drum kineticism like they've been listening to the Ex or the Dog Faced Hermans or someone, some of the whole Beefheartian jazzified guitar scrabble makes me think of Joe Baiza or Eugene Chadbourne. All kind of low-key, but plenty of fun nonetheless.

Torn Hawk aka Luke Wyatt has f/ the past year been grinding away at the parameters of lo-fi bedroom-psych, releasing roughly 900 tracks that gyrate between v-wave, outsider/hipster house, noise, instrumental hip-hip and ramshackle krautrock contraptions for L.I.E.S., Beer on the Rug and I'll put 90% odds on Not Not Fun w/in six months. his best work atm is opiate-laced motorik rambling heavily scented w/ v-wave’s urban anomie (+ occasional psych guitar thrown in f/ full genre demolition):

not to derail this thread or to ignore the fine work that Hellhouse/E3/everyone is doing in here, but bumping this thread seems to be a good way to get imago's attention so
have you ended up listening to Micachu's album from last year, Never? What did you think of it? Because I'm listening through it for the first time (both artist and album) and I am p enthralled. I will probably listen to it again right away. Lots of looney tunes weirdness and crazy left turns but, like, less precious then that implies...

have been slogging thru the Jute Gyte archives looking f/ more oblique guitar blasts outside of Discontinuities. Senescence, Isolation and Impermanence all deliver, Verstiegenheit and Young Eagle are v. good but more conventional (poss. transitional) ~black metal~, but his “first” guitar rec Old Ways (2008) is a notable shot at max saturation through the timeless thug-craft of brutally compressed Vitamix guitars smothering a sputtering drumbox + default yelling at listeners (a delight f/ meth buffs who slam Filosofem as tepid pop confectionery). Kalmbach’s IDM recs from the same period are relatively polished + polite and I’d like to think that his My-War-era-BF-mangling-Contrary-Motion-in-the-Port-Authority-men’s-room production is an entirely deliberate noize/metal venture but ymmv:

take some drugs, think you're the goddamn velvet underground, toss off that abomination. hey it got its reaction though! it WORKED!
just got to this. must admit I don't hear it like that. it's definitely a continuation of the country teasers schtick of using the reductive/vicious inane to create cold disgust, holding the listener up to the morally repellent. that makes it sound more virtuous than it is - there's nothing virtuous here, which I always assume is the point. how acceptable it is as a method is a different matter, and saying "if you're saying there's nothing virtuous here, in what sense can it be called good?" opens up areas of aesthetics/moral responsibility of art that I tend to fudge, and which is probably getting a bit abstract or academic anyway for something which could probably rightly be termed puerile.
think the music generally sounds great tho (including on that track). sparse, bleak, hard.
― Fizzles, Wednesday, 23 October 2013 05:36 (eleven years ago)
it's also now in my head you bastard, which regardless of the rights and wrongs of the track, isn't exactly what I need, especially as when songs get in my head I tend to murmur the lyrics to myself in places like the supermarket, rising to low-level bawling when cycling into work.
― Fizzles, Wednesday, 23 October 2013 05:40 (eleven years ago)
actual lol @ s.e.e hipton's outsider house, whats realer than reel-to-reel?
theres lots of good stuff itt though, thanx bros. contributions for time and space: danse noir EPs, that (old-ish?) pete swanson record on type which seems kind of completely rad and 'club of no regrets' on forced nostalgia.
― Lamp, Wednesday, 23 October 2013 05:59 (eleven years ago)
Something like Kreibabe by Foetus achieves brilliance by placing its horrifying moral perversions in the mouth of a narrator who is thus able to give them vulnerability - to psychologise them. This track is the sexual equivalent of a Hitler rally recording and is too much for me. I guess it's impressively, gnostically unpleasant.

Been really kicking off on the goats for the last couple of days to this track by Forebrace. Feels slightly like a demented version of the Taking of Pelham 123 theme.

E3 I know u have heard gabber + its sundry ultra-bpm hyperkore krokodil-shooting-anthem progeny b/c I recall blessing u w/ said festering musical misery via magnetic tape approx 70 years ago. which aspects of 2013's arrested ultraviolent nihilistic never-employed pornogore-fanatic jugend hatchlings are giving u pause? splittercore is magic we can all share.

L.I.E.S. gets clowned on ILX due the ~hype phactor~ but I have never had to mingle irl w/ any of the other quite probably horrible ppl who listen to this music so I will agree w/ you on the Shadowlust.

i thought ilx loved l.i.e.s? or do u mean like lex (lol)? some of the techno stuff is too boring for me but im not super into techno anyways
― flopson, Monday, 2 December 2013 01:48 (eleven years ago)
eh, it’s standard low-level bobbins cru carping about the elevation of noise and its corollary ~the degradation of groove~ together purportedly making the material sound like shit on sound systems + difficult to mix w/ standard techno fair. also, annoyance w/ the hype factor/crossover appeal that grants the artists greater coverage than veterans who don’t have a novel noise angle, which I’m sure is true but IDGAF. tbf I enjoy the label’s tunes more as lo-fi psych jams + I don’t have to mix this racket into crowd-moving sets.

i'm familiar with BBB, but I hadn't heard any new stuff from them since they kinda updated their production value. i'm into it though.

well gabber was v well-defined w/ a geographical ground zero (rotterdam) + (in)famous practitioners of the art + labels and such, whereas based on its brief wikipedia entry and approx 1000 mp3 compilations on archive.org for all I know splittercore is a genre hoax perpetrated by a single overcaffeinated 4chan manboy
don't even get me started on extratone

way back in the dark ages of gabber there were already 1000-bpm cornball fux vying f/ the prestigious wet merkin prize f/ crippling onanism, so this particular strain of teen stupor has been around f/ a while. also, we may have shot past the point where ephemeral microgenres require anything more than self-referential authentication (p. sure no one glomming onto "splittercore" is waiting by the phone f/ Wenner's approval). idk, yr right in some old-media sense, but the youths on Bandcamp are cranking out new tags by the crate and it's less hoax than wager (the ghost of shit future will see you now).
