Tracks:

Bimbo ft Juliana - Con Solo Una Sonrisa

(Standard plinky plonk commercial bachata, but I like it; or perhaps, "therefore I like it" (but not really). Better than average vocals, especially some of the harmonies, but then I'm a fan of Dominican merengue diva Juliana. I've read this is actually a remake.)

_Rudipherous_, Thursday, 14 March 2013 18:50 (twelve years ago)

Also, this new Sakanaction song is pretty decent too.

Gabriel Bruce - Love In Arms

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 15 May 2013 06:41 (twelve years ago)

What the hell. This has grown on my quite a bit and the video helps:

Shiina Ringo - Ironhanihoheto

I do agree with those who say they wish she spent less time working within the straightjacket that TV/movie theme music tends to impose. But this is good, and I can see why she gets asked to compose theme music so much considering that she see has the hang.

_Rudipherous_, Saturday, 25 May 2013 01:31 (twelve years ago)

That Cash, Diamond Rings, Swimming Pools song is amazing, cheers.

I trust MikoMcha in everything so please tell me about:

Steve Summers - The Outermaze
Chance the Rapper - Acid Rap

Tim F, Thursday, 30 May 2013 11:02 (twelve years ago)

Man, most of the stuff from that list is straight from ILM anyway (and Lex's picks especially).

The Summer EP is my favorite thing from L.I.E.S. this year, along with the Dolo Percussion record. That said, I feel that some of the releases are really work better in a set, and am mostly into Ron Morelli's recent mixes, to be honest.

Chance the Rapper's Acid Rap had a lot written him, so I'm not sure what I could add. Experimental lyricism, I think of it in the wake of Kendrick Lamar and Black Hippy. West Coast sort of jazzy vibes. Not usually my sort of thing, but it's a consistent high quality tape, working well around the time I'm drinking my morning coffee.

MikoMcha, Thursday, 30 May 2013 16:39 (twelve years ago)

This track is really remarkable though: Bookworms & Steve Summers - Unknown Number

Forget who pointed it out on the techno bobbins thread, but would really like to hear the rest of that EP.

11. young galaxy - ultramarine
12. ashley monroe - like a rose
13. pantha du prince & the bell laboratory - elements of light
14. maxmillion dunbar - house of woo

*this is not an actual album. brandy clark is an incredible country singer-songwriter recommended to me by kacey musgraves (who she's written for). her only official release is a 3-track EP on itunes but a couple of months ago there was a downloadable 12-song set on her soundcloud (including the 3 songs on the ep). it's since been taken down but that 12-song set is absolutely brilliant and totally works as an album for me. it hasn't been a great year for albums imo - outside the top 6 we're already getting into "this is a very pleasant and enjoyable effort" rather than "omg my heart and mind and body have been blown away" - but b clark is certainly the latter. there's talk of her on the kacey musgraves thread if you're interested

I love the Brandy Clark 'album'.

It reminds me of Pistol Annies debut album, in the sense that its a series of character studies with lyrics that manage to be witty, heartbreaking, bleak and hopeful.

gregus, Friday, 31 May 2013 22:25 (twelve years ago)

o kacey musgraves is also def on my list, been a good 1/2 yr, theres more i cant rc right now

I know, its full of quotable lines:

'First he told her that her hair looked nice / Promised he was gonna leave his wife / Yeah, two more lies / She didn't care'
'There's no crime of fashion worth a crime of passion'
'What will keep me out of heaven / Will take me there tonight'

Just an amazing album lyrically
'

Just Like Him KILLS me

"They say love's like coming home / and I came from a broken one / so why am I surprised you're always leaving"
"I used to say that I'd be damned / 'fore I'd ever fall in love with a man / like the one / mama wasted her youth on"

And the way Hungover morphs from cycle of drudgery to personal blossoming

flamenco drop (lex pretend), Friday, 31 May 2013 23:01 (twelve years ago)

xpost

When I mentioned hopeful lyrics in an earlier post 'Hungover' was the song i was thinking of. I love the way it manages in three minutes to give a perfectly rounded description of the life of living with an addict and also manages to display how the character is able to grow and escape while their partner stagnates.

'Crazy Women' is another favorite. Primarily for the way in which it skewers the idea of a man portraying himself as an innocent victim refusing to take any responsibility for his actions. Also 'they hauled her off in high-heels and handcuffs' is a terrific line.

This Deafheaven album is like, incredible. By far the best metal album since Aesthetica (and yeah, I know, no need to bother discussing it)

Other than that I've loved stuff like Anxiety and Modern Vampires of the City and Fly Zone. It's been a really good year so far.

Frederik B, Tuesday, 4 June 2013 16:45 (twelve years ago)

An incredible year so far, but particularly for comebacks.

Shiina Ringo - Irohanihoheto
Katy B - What Love Is Made Of

There must be something else. Bunch of UK dance/dance pop stuff that I like more than not, but not quite enough to endorse.

*This could get annoying before the year is up.

_Rudipherous_, Tuesday, 4 June 2013 22:19 (twelve years ago)

there's a couple of the high profile comeback records I haven't heard, and a couple I have, but nothing feels better in 2013 than loving a new Clinic album (even if it's actually "new" ie a remix album)

Drugs A. Money, Saturday, 8 June 2013 08:16 (twelve years ago)

Between all the great UK dance pop (most of which apparently mostly hadn't quite hit me last time I posted to this thread, although it had my attention) and the emergence of Mohammed Assaf via Arab Idol, this year suddenly looks very good to me, musically. Plus there are a bunch of albums, released or forthcoming, that I want to hear.

Rudiphmental Remix (_Rudipherous_), Friday, 21 June 2013 15:10 (twelve years ago)

I've still yet to hear the Hacker Farm record. I'll have to track it down somehow.

It's well worth it. A good contender to the BoC album.

Wildlife! - Roxy Reboot

Just found this tonight. Short description from bandcamp: "[Wildlife!] tracked down legendary figures from the UK’s first punk rock movement to reinterpret their favourite reggae classics, while simlutaneously collaborating with the forefront of Jamaica's dancehall avant-garde, to reinterpret influential punk classics and forgotten gems."

The first 4 tracks are punk dudes working with Wildlife! on reggae tracks that had been covered by punk bands in the 70s. The second 4 tracks are covers of 70s punk originals with contemporary dancehall people. The version of "Oh Bondage Up Yours" in particular is crazy good.

There are really just too many to mention now, but most of them have probably already been mentioned by the dance crew. However, I have to just say:

Lulu James - Closer

Where did this come from? Where is all this stuff coming from?

Step by Step is great too/was great on first listen.

Did anybody tell you that your voice is like Abd Al Halim's? (_Rudipherous_), Monday, 24 June 2013 17:50 (twelve years ago)

I really can't be arsed to list 'em all yet. There's been a lot of stuff I've heard, and I'm still sifting through things and constantly re-arranging my lists and stuff.

Interesting. I find that album quite bland, fwiw.

I love it, except "Come Save Me" has a totally different feel and sort of stops the momentum right in the middle of the record. They should've left it off.

dschinghis kraan (NickB), Tuesday, 25 June 2013 09:28 (twelve years ago)

More people definitely need to get on board with that Secret Circuit album, could see it appealing to folks who were into the Blondes or Talabot albums from last year. Star-kissed balearica but with an acid edge to it, quite Gavin & Delia I suppose.

dschinghis kraan (NickB), Tuesday, 25 June 2013 09:34 (twelve years ago)

That Wildlife! Roxy Reboot thing JF posted upthread is great. The mechanised footwork version of Oh Bondage, Up Yours is especially cool. Everyone get a copy. NOW!

yeah parquet courts was reissued with a much wider release in 2013 so i think it's fair game, no one really heard it in 2012

i like that milk music album too. this is unfair but watching a video of them play live made me like them a little less, their singer has a doofy little ponytail. william tyler album is great, should maybe be on my list too.

I'll put together a more comprehensive list once I've gotten the chance to give second and third listens to some things I'm on the fence about, but for now Laura Marling's Once I Was an Eagle and Tegan and Sara's Heartthrob are looking like my half-year faves. FIDLAR's self-titled album is probably my favourite album of 2013 that nobody else is talking about.

Just coming to the realisation that I love the These New Puritans album after having difficulty with their previous one. It feels like this is another piece to a wider puzzle of a stylistic continuum that seems to be forming over the las few years - it sits happily on my shelf in among these other grand, dark, sweeping, large-scale ever-so-slightly proggy albums like The Seer, Shaking The Habitual, Bish Bosch, Heartland and a number of other unclassifiable records I've enjoyed in recent(ish) times.

There's a link to that feature elsewhere on the site that calls it a "rolling list" that's been "updated for the fall." So maybe it's a work in progress that was started a while ago to generate pageviews from searches for "best albums of 2013."

Shit, I've had Drake - 'hold on we're going home' stuck on my head for the past three days. Not sure if it makes it one of my favorite tracks of the year but it's a hard to ignore it.

Moka, Tuesday, 29 October 2013 19:02 (eleven years ago)

i heard that drake song on an adult contemporary station earlier today and it fit in kinda perfectly. kinda psyched for 2 years from now when they give it some spins at the grocery store.

kaputtinabox (imago), Wednesday, 6 November 2013 01:00 (eleven years ago)

Jandek's THE SONG OF MORGAN is my favorite album of the year. It's a nine-CD boxset of hour-long solo piano "nocturnes" and it is the true followup to Gonzales' SOLO PIANO album for all of us who were underwhelmed by SOLO PIANO II.

Mr. Snrub, Wednesday, 6 November 2013 01:05 (eleven years ago)

Really digging this Perfect Pussy EP. Unhinged rock vibes with heavily fuzzed out female vocals. Really good stuff.

Is it a legitimate list if the top 10 are all Rough Trade exclusives?

jmm, Tuesday, 19 November 2013 00:28 (eleven years ago)

Real thread for this now: Year-End Critics' Polls 2013

"RT exclusives" seem to involve tacking a CD of live cuts/B-sides on to the main release - unclear whether a group/label that didn't play ball would get bumped out of the top 10.

famous for hits! (seandalai), Tuesday, 19 November 2013 00:36 (eleven years ago)

hey I just realized no one seems to be mentioning "Colonized" by Paula Temple, which bangs pretty fucking hard IMO

I've kind of known for a while that my top album of the year is going to be "Images Du Futur" by Suuns. Surprised that a knock-off band (coughCliniccough) could come up with something so great, but there you go. Takes the Clinic/Radiohead overlap thing and then nails the hooks and the production. Been playing it regularly all year and still finding neat little details.

anyone has some recommendations of this year's "indie-friendly"/accessible songs for the dancefloor? something like john talabot, osborne, todd terje, or maybe a remix of a well known indie song. thanks in advance.

classixx - "hanging gardens" (samples fleetwood mac)

subaltern 8 (Michael B), Friday, 29 November 2013 01:03 (eleven years ago)

I think noise and broad-minded electronic music fans should try Matthew Shipp/Guillermo Brown's Telephone Popcorn, though I'm not sure how all the non-acoustic sounds are actually being produced.

Lusine is spans the indie / dancefloor divide as well.

I quite liked this Chvrches remix by the reliable Moon Boots.

not dancefloor friendly i'm afraid. i was asked to spin some songs in this high school party, so yeah

Had completely forgotten about that Burial release this year.

MikoMcha, Saturday, 30 November 2013 06:12 (eleven years ago)

it was released just before Christmas last year..

braunld (Lowell N. Behold'n), Saturday, 30 November 2013 14:58 (eleven years ago)

i think that's technically true, but the ep should be eligible in one or the other year-end polls. ilx's year-end roundup of polls is pretty comprehensive, and it shows truant/rough sleeper was in none of them (other burial releases from 2012 -- e.g., the kindred ep; the collaborations with four tet -- were in many of the polls). and i'm pretty sure it's omission from 2012 polls wasn't because critics disliked it (metacritic has it at 88 on 17 reviews. also, it's brilliant and a real step forward.

Daniel, Esq 2, Saturday, 30 November 2013 15:57 (eleven years ago)

so i mean it's fair game for inclusion in 2013 lists, i think.

Daniel, Esq 2, Saturday, 30 November 2013 15:59 (eleven years ago)

yeah, i love it. i'd include it in a 'best of 2012' list, however. Seems hasty to be making a definitive/final list, even in December... there are a number of under-the-radar releases we've yet to hear and digest.

braunld (Lowell N. Behold'n), Saturday, 30 November 2013 16:08 (eleven years ago)

I hope these guys can pull together for a second album, as half the band from their debut has already split. "Home", "Friend Crush", and "I'm His Girl" are all great ideas for pop songs, fourth-wave feminism meets updated disco beat (or something like that) set in some future time and place we all wish were happening now. The single is promising, but I want more!

Lee626, Monday, 2 December 2013 17:50 (eleven years ago)

This is all I have for albums and I'm going to save my tracks for the ILM poll. I might delete a couple of these albums when I vote, out of political spite, depending on how angry I'm feeling:

Matthew Shipp – Piano Sutras
HAIM – Days Are Gone
Yamantaka//Sonic Titan – UZU
Ayelet Rose Gottlieb – Roadsides
Grupo Niche – Tocando el Cielo con las Manos

Decided I really didn't like the Oneohtrix Point Never.

_Rudipherous_, Monday, 2 December 2013 17:55 (eleven years ago)

laurel halo - chance of rain
chance the rapper - acid rap
the underachievers - indigoism
dedalus_beuger_frey (on potlatch)
cornford/rodgers - boring embroidery
michael pisaro - the punishment of the tribe...
lambkin/lescalleet - photographs (?) (still deliberating)
oneohtrix point never - r + 7 (novelty shit, sounds like GTA V)
eva-marie houben: piano music
autechre - exai/l-event

Bad Sports - Bras [not easy to google these guys, on Dirtnap Records]

I'm kind of weirded out that this doesn't seem to be on *any* year end lists. Punky Texas band having their Replacements breakthrough moment where the songwriting palette suddenly expands in all sorts of interesting ways. Lead singer has traces of David Johansen in his voice, which start to come out more and more on the album's superior 2nd half. Online reviews are mostly by well-meaning punk fans who can't write well, which probably isn't helping. This is a shoo-in for my top ten.

I feel like I've missed so much. Probably had less chance to keep up with everything this year than any in my adult life.

Bachar Mar-Khalifé - Who's Gonna Get the Ball from Behind the Wall of the Garden Today?

I didn't know he had anything out this year. I love his father Marcel Khalife's 80s album At the Border (as well as some other things here and there).

_Rudipherous_, Wednesday, 4 December 2013 19:34 (eleven years ago)

Mar-Khalife's Oil Spill had some good passages, but didn't hold up for me as an album.

_Rudipherous_, Wednesday, 4 December 2013 19:39 (eleven years ago)

Meanwhile lots of other stuff on lists posted to this thread that I have no idea about.

If there's no order, why did you number them?

SHAUN (DJP), Wednesday, 4 December 2013 20:10 (eleven years ago)

Just to know how many albums I've got. I cut and pasted the list.

Not listening to him but I suddenly am being bombarded with ads for Jake Owen. Whatever happened to stage names?

i'd forgotten about that bad sports album but will check it out again now

same. but then again i often fall in love with random singles by vaguely interchangeable personality-free male country singers (him, billy currington, hell even joe nichols).

dyl, Saturday, 7 December 2013 01:46 (eleven years ago)

lol i'm a huge fan of those two as well!

i don't think either of them are wholly interchangeable tho

o. nate, Monday, 16 December 2013 16:22 (eleven years ago)

So what's the difference between New World and World?

MikoMcha, Monday, 16 December 2013 16:41 (eleven years ago)

Oh wait, World are reissues?

MikoMcha, Monday, 16 December 2013 16:42 (eleven years ago)

"New World" as in new mostly non-English language international music releases, "world reissues" as in 2013 issued releases of old mostly-non-English music. But maybe you figured that out and are just messing with Mordy

curmudgeon, Monday, 16 December 2013 17:59 (eleven years ago)

the late great, Wednesday, 18 December 2013 05:57 (eleven years ago)

I spent some time with Old this year, but it isn't one of my favorite records this year. Think in the end I like watching interviews with Danny Brown more than listening to his music, seems like he'd be fun to hang out with.

MikoMcha, Wednesday, 18 December 2013 11:08 (eleven years ago)

Ah, wrong thread!
