Yeah that Cartel album is fresh. Havent listened in a while now. My wife loves that Minstrels Prayer song but I always thought that was one of the worst on there.

I am all in on this thread. Would this be the appropriate place to post about how much I love the new Paramore song? And how excited I am for the new Paramore album?

I spent about two days binging on twinkle when I found out that was a genre last year. I enjoyed it, but didn't take any lasting favorites away from it. Lots of promising bands that could be really good in two or three years, but need some seasoning. Unfortunately, they'll all probably break up before they become decent songwriters.

Sounds like it's straight out of 2004, but it really works, because you can totally buy them just now discovering Liars or Pretty Girls Mark Graves or whatever and realizing "hey, this is pretty good."

I went to Warped Tour several years ago to see them. It was a humbling experience I wouldn't really recommend, and I can't say it was quite worth it. But I still return to Paramore's last two albums a lot. As one of the the very rare recent commercial alternative bands I've connected with, they'll probably always hold a weird, isolated place in my heart

I grew up with punk, and identified with it, and in my head still like to think it's a major part of me. And then you go to the Warped Tour and realize you are a dinosaur and punk is for kids

i covered warped tour for two years for the voice; last year they were catering to some kind of nostalgia circuit (taking back sunday headlined) but the year before it was all metalcore and unseemly metalcore hybrids (paramore officially headlined that thing but they weren't at the nassau coliseum date, so our headliner was a day to remember (guh))

anyway, so many kids in asking alexandria shirts, i wasn't sure what to do with myself

also i guess i'm the only dude who dislikes the new paramore; it's exhausting, it totally sounds like three people trying to make up losing a primary songwriter and an excellent drummer by just incorporating every idea they have (albeit said former-primary songwriter and excellent drummer are also complete turds)

"ignorance" feels so effortless by comparison

I dunno. "Now" is jumpy, but it doesn't strike me as overworked (at least not more so than any other Paramore single). It's busy, but it all comes together pretty well

I've been listening to the latest Cheap Girls record on repeat alot lately. Does that count as pop-punk? (They toured with the Mezingers (a band I have tried to get into but just don't get)) so one would assume...)

I love the backing tracks on a lot of these songs but the vocals just don't work.

i do not at all understand the love for the mezingers from the absolutepunk crowd. band is boring as hell

imo the band that should've gotten all that mezingers momentum from last year is driver friendly, who i think are going to rerelease their 2012 album bury a dream through hopeless records this year. it's front-to-back excellent and has one of the most gorgeous guitar tones i've ever heard

I came on too strong; didn't mean to shame you for liking it. Years of crap British buzz bands have just given me a reflex distaste for re-purposed Clash/Jam/2 Tone/etc influences. Like, in that video, one of the bandmembers literally flips through some records and stops to check out the first Specials LP, lest we miss the fact that these guys like the same music that every British buzz band likes.

their record is probably my favorite non-fall out boy/paramore emo release this year; parts of it (particularly "slowglobe") travel a little too post-rocky but i also like how they articulate that style, with emo embedded in the skeleton. feels a lot less like aimless but bombastic prettiness, feels more elaborately constructed

My 16-yr-old self can't believe I didn't know there was a new jimmy album out. I'm writing this having not listened to it yet, but after a few years away and my dislike for 'invented' tempered by a firm appreciated of 'chase this light', I feel ready to listen w/a near-enough open heart.... i encourage everyone to revisit invented, it's a gorgeous, cinematic record; all of those songs sound gigantic. probably my favorite jimmy eat world record after clarity.

bonus points for it basically being a concept album about cindy sherman photos and for having deliberate shifts in gender perspective

i'm not sure what i make of 'damaged' yet. i think it was nice to hear about it here, through some thoughtful & vague comments rather than any kind of mass hype, and also after quite a long break, because both those things gave me a bit of distance from it - the distance maybe explains why my response has been slow to form, though. i've listened to it a few times and all i have so far is that it felt comfortable to listen to/that i felt comfortable listening to it.

on another note: i started making a 'pop punk' playlist the other day that led to discussions w/my bf about what constitutes 'pop punk'. feel like 'pop punk' is such a diluted non-genre that i can totally include elliott's 'drive on to me' or a static lullaby's 'the collision' in the playlist but he went down the 'pop punk = skate punk = tony hawk's' soundtracks' route and was unconvinced. i realise this whole comment is kind of stupid and contrived, i guess i just wondered if anyone here had any thoughts on where you, personally, draw the line there.

Lol at dayo posting the "Check Yes Juliet" clip above, that always plays on the TV at my gym and it always bothers me that Juliet is breaking all her father's rules for a guy with such terrible hair.

American Radass is a hoot. That album has an energy and impulsiveness that a lot of these other ones don't imo.

I'll have to revisit that Owel album. I remember really, really being smitten with it for a minute, but now I don't remember much about it (which is the case with a lot of these albums).

what happened to the re-release of their album from last year? seems like that new EP maybe took its place

mostly what i've found lacking in the whole "emo revival" thing is both energy and quality songs. a lot of bands are just really smart references stitched together, which can be exciting in a moment but doesn't leave much to return to

no idea what hopeless is doing with driver friendly but yeah bury a dream if it can be characterized as "emo revival" (it doesn't seem as in conversation with american football as all those other bands) would definitely be my favorite of the past few years

Yeah, it's the songwriting that's really lacking. I think that's why I find a lot of the emo revival less exciting than the mini twinkle boom from a year or two back. That stuff was never more than the sum of its influences, either, but at least the influences could be kind of cool and surprising sometimes

owel definitely seems both the most polished and the most fully formed of the bunch

this is only tangentially related to emo or pop-punk (it's more power pop) but the new jesse lacey-produced kevin devine record, bubblegum is awesome
