also a bit outside the realm of this thread but related: there's going to be a new waxahatchee record this year and apparently it's band-oriented (her last record american weekend is p much all acoustic and voice)

there's also been this resurgence over the past three or four years of hardcore kinsella bros/american football worshippers making that exact sound a hundred times over, lots of finger-tapping and time changes. it's unfortunately been called "twinkle." i kind of love everythign that's come out of it though; last year's dads record was great, and maura just sent me this town needs guns on spotify, their record is v nice

haha no it's fine...i was just thinking: rolling metal, rolling punk-non-indie, rolling drone/psych, rolling emo/pop punk, and that rolling non-indie dreamweaver stuff or w/e that is (some cool stuff on there but i guess it's for shit that's not macho enough to be punk/noise but not lame enough to be indie? or too weird to be indie?)...
― baby beluga (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Tuesday, 29 January 2013 22:02 (twelve years ago)
yeah i didn't really notice the rock overkill but i guess i think the tendency of those scenes is to shun emo and pop-punk and metalcore
― emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Tuesday, 29 January 2013 22:04 (twelve years ago)
Alright I am in on this. Been a while since I stayed on top of this kinda thing. That Cartel song you posted is cool. I listened to them a lil about 7-8 years ago, saw them live too.
― queef ka queef (Spottie_Ottie_Dope), Tuesday, 29 January 2013 22:07 (twelve years ago)

Yeah that Cartel album is fresh. Havent listened in a while now. My wife loves that Minstrels Prayer song but I always thought that was one of the worst on there.
Luckie St and Matter of Time are my jams, on top of what you posted.

"7-8 years ago" was a stretch, looks like 2006 is when that album came out :/
― queef ka queef (Spottie_Ottie_Dope), Tuesday, 29 January 2013 22:13 (twelve years ago)
"minstrel's prayer" is awful yeah but the whole section of "a" that reprises half the album makes me want to like the lesser songs more

I like that Dads song alright. Ill check that album out.

I am all in on this thread. Would this be the appropriate place to post about how much I love the new Paramore song? And how excited I am for the new Paramore album?
― Evan R, Friday, 1 February 2013 16:00 (twelve years ago)
I spent about two days binging on twinkle when I found out that was a genre last year. I enjoyed it, but didn't take any lasting favorites away from it. Lots of promising bands that could be really good in two or three years, but need some seasoning. Unfortunately, they'll all probably break up before they become decent songwriters.
― Evan R, Friday, 1 February 2013 16:02 (twelve years ago)
YEah I like them re paramore
― queef ka queef (Spottie_Ottie_Dope), Friday, 1 February 2013 16:02 (twelve years ago)
Saw them open for The Rocket Summer and Brandtson in 2005 or so. Had no clue who they were. Saw them at a Chile's after the gig and gave Hayley a high five and told her she rocked it.

Sounds like it's straight out of 2004, but it really works, because you can totally buy them just now discovering Liars or Pretty Girls Mark Graves or whatever and realizing "hey, this is pretty good."
― Evan R, Friday, 1 February 2013 16:08 (twelve years ago)
It's a good song
― queef ka queef (Spottie_Ottie_Dope), Friday, 1 February 2013 16:10 (twelve years ago)
I went to Warped Tour several years ago to see them. It was a humbling experience I wouldn't really recommend, and I can't say it was quite worth it. But I still return to Paramore's last two albums a lot. As one of the the very rare recent commercial alternative bands I've connected with, they'll probably always hold a weird, isolated place in my heart
― Evan R, Friday, 1 February 2013 16:13 (twelve years ago)

xp I wrote a long, thinky piece about it I won't link to, but it's depressing how fast punk can leave you behind. I grew up with punk, and identified with it, and in my head still like to think it's a major part of me. And then you go to the Warped Tour and realize you are a dinosaur and punk is for kids
― Evan R, Friday, 1 February 2013 16:17 (twelve years ago)
Oh yah totally. I went in 2004 in boise and was only 23 at that point. Def felt old even then. Went again like two years ago O__o. I get the same feeling when I go to the mall.
― queef ka queef (Spottie_Ottie_Dope), Friday, 1 February 2013 16:24 (twelve years ago)
I still look like I'm 15 so it's all cool for me
― 乒乓, Friday, 1 February 2013 16:26 (twelve years ago)
That's the worst thing, though. You can look young and fit in well enough, but even so the music you're exposed to—and the revulsion you can't help but feel toward it, even if you try to be open-minded about new forms of music—will make you feel like a withered curmudgeon from the inside
― Evan R, Friday, 1 February 2013 16:30 (twelve years ago)
but I still love all forms of poppunk
― 乒乓, Friday, 1 February 2013 16:31 (twelve years ago)
Ha; I have much to learn from you. This is a great thread.
― Evan R, Friday, 1 February 2013 16:40 (twelve years ago)
i covered warped tour for two years for the voice; last year they were catering to some kind of nostalgia circuit (taking back sunday headlined) but the year before it was all metalcore and unseemly metalcore hybrids (paramore officially headlined that thing but they weren't at the nassau coliseum date, so our headliner was a day to remember (guh))
― emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Friday, 1 February 2013 17:07 (twelve years ago)
anyway, so many kids in asking alexandria shirts, i wasn't sure what to do with myself
also i guess i'm the only dude who dislikes the new paramore; it's exhausting, it totally sounds like three people trying to make up losing a primary songwriter and an excellent drummer by just incorporating every idea they have (albeit said former-primary songwriter and excellent drummer are also complete turds)
― emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Friday, 1 February 2013 17:10 (twelve years ago)
"ignorance" feels so effortless by comparison
― emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Friday, 1 February 2013 17:11 (twelve years ago)
I dunno. "Now" is jumpy, but it doesn't strike me as overworked (at least not more so than any other Paramore single). It's busy, but it all comes together pretty well
― Evan R, Friday, 1 February 2013 17:59 (twelve years ago)
I've been listening to the latest Cheap Girls record on repeat alot lately. Does that count as pop-punk? (They toured with the Mezingers (a band I have tried to get into but just don't get)) so one would assume...)

I love the backing tracks on a lot of these songs but the vocals just don't work.
― skip, Friday, 1 February 2013 20:02 (twelve years ago)
i do not at all understand the love for the mezingers from the absolutepunk crowd. band is boring as hell
― emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Friday, 1 February 2013 20:48 (twelve years ago)
imo the band that should've gotten all that mezingers momentum from last year is driver friendly, who i think are going to rerelease their 2012 album bury a dream through hopeless records this year. it's front-to-back excellent and has one of the most gorgeous guitar tones i've ever heard
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1UN_ybPyt_E
i'm also enjoying this cheap girls record, thanks for the tip irrational!
― emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Friday, 1 February 2013 20:54 (twelve years ago)
Oh that Driver Friendly is super good. Know if there's a place to stream it? Album isn't on Spotify
― Evan R, Friday, 1 February 2013 21:36 (twelve years ago)
yeah the album was yanked off of spotify/itunes/bandcamp after they signed to hopeless records so there's no place to stream it now. i'm guessing it'll be rereleased soon. this is the "new" single:

Foo Fighters-y. With shades of Of Monsters and Mens horns and peppiness. Seems like alt radio would devour that. Probably a smart signing.
― Evan R, Friday, 1 February 2013 21:46 (twelve years ago)
haha 'hopeless records' is a name I haven't read in a looooong time
― 乒乓, Friday, 1 February 2013 21:49 (twelve years ago)
i kind of think it'd be awesome if alt radio devoured driver friendly. it's such a good record, deserves whatever attention it gets

I came on too strong; didn't mean to shame you for liking it. Years of crap British buzz bands have just given me a reflex distaste for re-purposed Clash/Jam/2 Tone/etc influences. Like, in that video, one of the bandmembers literally flips through some records and stops to check out the first Specials LP, lest we miss the fact that these guys like the same music that every British buzz band likes.
― Evan R, Tuesday, 5 February 2013 16:34 (twelve years ago)
Ha no worries. Shame away. I am a US dude and have no feelers in on UK buzz bands.

I've been posting to ILM for years, but I still don't know the etiquette for stuff like this: Would it be PC to start a thread for Waxahatchee? That new album is really great, and it inspired a ton of excellent music writing, so it might be fun to have a place to discuss it

owel released a really pretty video for the song "snowglobe" http://www.baeblemusic.com/musicblog/4-11-2013/Owel-Offer-Orchestral-Rock-at-Its-Finest.html
their record is probably my favorite non-fall out boy/paramore emo release this year; parts of it (particularly "slowglobe") travel a little too post-rocky but i also like how they articulate that style, with emo embedded in the skeleton. feels a lot less like aimless but bombastic prettiness, feels more elaborately constructed

it has been the biggest grower this year. idk man. i went through a nervous breakdown last year and the lyrics seem particularly pointed toward a lot of the things i was going through. i dig the production okay

My 16-yr-old self can't believe I didn't know there was a new jimmy album out. I'm writing this having not listened to it yet, but after a few years away and my dislike for 'invented' tempered by a firm appreciated of 'chase this light', I feel ready to listen w/a near-enough open heart.... I will keep you posted on my thoughts. hi, by the way.
― liannasaur, Tuesday, 16 July 2013 22:19 (twelve years ago)
i encourage everyone to revisit invented, it's a gorgeous, cinematic record; all of those songs sound gigantic. probably my favorite jimmy eat world record after clarity.
bonus points for it basically being a concept album about cindy sherman photos and for having deliberate shifts in gender perspective
― emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Wednesday, 17 July 2013 20:33 (twelve years ago)
Listened again today in the car and it sounded better. I'll stick with it.
― caek da killa (Spottie_Ottie_Dope), Thursday, 18 July 2013 05:55 (twelve years ago)
i'm not sure what i make of 'damaged' yet. i think it was nice to hear about it here, through some thoughtful & vague comments rather than any kind of mass hype, and also after quite a long break, because both those things gave me a bit of distance from it - the distance maybe explains why my response has been slow to form, though. i've listened to it a few times and all i have so far is that it felt comfortable to listen to/that i felt comfortable listening to it.
on another note: i started making a 'pop punk' playlist the other day that led to discussions w/my bf about what constitutes 'pop punk'. feel like 'pop punk' is such a diluted non-genre that i can totally include elliott's 'drive on to me' or a static lullaby's 'the collision' in the playlist but he went down the 'pop punk = skate punk = tony hawk's' soundtracks' route and was unconvinced. i realise this whole comment is kind of stupid and contrived, i guess i just wondered if anyone here had any thoughts on where you, personally, draw the line there.
― liannasaur, Saturday, 27 July 2013 22:13 (twelve years ago)
pop punk == warped tour punk == tony hawk punk == hot topic punk?

Don't mean this to be a loaded question (asking for listening purposes, not assault purposes), but has the emo revival yielded a truly great album yet?
― Evan R, Wednesday, 2 October 2013 15:50 (twelve years ago)
from the bands there, the owel record. dads' american radass also truly great imo
― emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Wednesday, 2 October 2013 15:53 (twelve years ago)
Lol at dayo posting the "Check Yes Juliet" clip above, that always plays on the TV at my gym and it always bothers me that Juliet is breaking all her father's rules for a guy with such terrible hair.
― Tim F, Wednesday, 2 October 2013 15:57 (twelve years ago)
American Radass is a hoot. That album has an energy and impulsiveness that a lot of these other ones don't imo.
I'll have to revisit that Owel album. I remember really, really being smitten with it for a minute, but now I don't remember much about it (which is the case with a lot of these albums).
― Evan R, Wednesday, 2 October 2013 16:00 (twelve years ago)
driver friendly deserves a place on the stereogum list
what happened to the re-release of their album from last year? seems like that new EP maybe took its place
― anonanon, Wednesday, 2 October 2013 16:02 (twelve years ago)
mostly what i've found lacking in the whole "emo revival" thing is both energy and quality songs. a lot of bands are just really smart references stitched together, which can be exciting in a moment but doesn't leave much to return to
― emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Wednesday, 2 October 2013 16:03 (twelve years ago)
no idea what hopeless is doing with driver friendly but yeah bury a dream if it can be characterized as "emo revival" (it doesn't seem as in conversation with american football as all those other bands) would definitely be my favorite of the past few years
― emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Wednesday, 2 October 2013 16:04 (twelve years ago)
Yeah, it's the songwriting that's really lacking. I think that's why I find a lot of the emo revival less exciting than the mini twinkle boom from a year or two back. That stuff was never more than the sum of its influences, either, but at least the influences could be kind of cool and surprising sometimes
― Evan R, Wednesday, 2 October 2013 16:09 (twelve years ago)
