i'm surprised that nobody mentioned how incredibly appropriate the marlo line is for the LP title. (after being disappointed at the poor showing of this poll). like, of COURSE pusha idolizes marlo, maybe the most idiotically hardheaded tv character. pusha also shares marlo's self destructive streak. his bro basically shoving the "walk away with some dignity" in his face and push is like "nooooo but i wanna be faaamous"

some of the lines on the new mixtape along the lines of "i know i'm making all the wrong choices but can everyone just pretend i'm tony montana for a sec". "i am forgiven" is just so painful. it almost becomes compelling in the same way marlo was kind of my fav character on the wire... but even though i'm spending a lot of breath bitching about push here my appetite for trainwrecks has decreased significantly as of late. yeucch

Curren$y was all about "my name is my name" years ago

The Reverend, Thursday, 14 February 2013 08:03 (thirteen years ago)

i never really followed curren$y but from the limited amount i know of him he seems relatively normal and well adjusted? like i get how he might use that line cuz marlo was BA or whatever, but pusha invoking marlo in this case is actually a little spot on. push just exudes this awareness of how ridiculous he is and CONTINUES to run with it. he's a lil special in that way i think

Time for an ILX teaching moment: Can someone explain to me why Pusha is, it seems, generally thought of as a joke? I dug Hell Hath No Fury, paid zero attention since then, but am loving this new album pretty much top to bottom.

AS: It dates back, I think, to Clipse's national breakout as a blog favorite at their start and Pusha's monocular focus on drug sales

my boy was trying to tell me the kelly rowland track has pusha doing a "perfect 98 ma$e flow" which i guess is kinda true but is that really what you want people saying about your album?

adam, Tuesday, 5 November 2013 04:23 (twelve years ago)

the mase thing has been in every review i've read. dunno why he does it but it's fairly spot on. but yeah ... odd.

like all sane ppl, i despise Chris Brown but i like his hook on Sweet Serenade. the Rowland song is less successful.

there's no camera to capture that yelping moment! (forksclovetofu), Tuesday, 5 November 2013 06:36 (twelve years ago)

i think that if you want to truly understand the clipse narrative you have to listen to the singularly bleak we got it 4 cheap vol 3, especially the punishing despair in the 4 track stretch from "good morning" to "fuck you." i find it so fascinating how the same tribulations that turned both brothers numb caused malice to go christian and pusha to double down on his bullshit.

"desperate" mentioned upthread pretty much nails it for push i think. for yeeeeears he's squandered immense talent by devoting it all to his need for acceptance. he's spent a comical length of time whining about his lack of mainstream breakthrough. most reasonable human beings would reevaluate their priorities after two uber hyped albums arriving with consecutive thuds (i know consensus was that HHNF was nice, but i think it's boring). funny to think he might finally have it now at the age of like 40. kinda screams pyrrhic victory.

as i've said already i haven't examined his recent breakthrough anywhere near closely but if i did i bet i would see some herzog level irony in the narrative. from what i understand this could be his nic-cage-in-bad-lieutenant moment... grinding away looking increasingly pathetic for wayyyyy too long and all of a sudden the clouds miraculously break and he suddenly gets everything he ever wanted. i mean i guess i have to be happy for the guy but at the same time "euch"

fennel cartwright, Tuesday, 5 November 2013 09:05 (twelve years ago)

as soon as i began reading that post all i could hear in my head was Patrick Bateman's voice

Beatrix Kiddo (Raymond Cummings), Tuesday, 5 November 2013 11:41 (twelve years ago)

maybe i should just be happy to come to the record w/o a bunch of Clipse/Pusha baggage...i just enjoy the beats and most of the rapping. simple.

wish he would've ditched a feature or two, but oh well.

i know this isn't a thread for 'the wire', but this characterization of marlo stanfield bugs me, man! like...what show were you watching? is this a british person?

slam dunk, Tuesday, 18 March 2014 04:25 (twelve years ago)

came out of lurk to respond

um... wire spoilers ahead?

it was a bit much of me to call marlo an idiot. he was pretty savvy. i think i was just annoyed by his nihilism. like... what was his endgame? what did he hope to achieve? like, the other kingpin dudes seemed to enjoy being kingpins, even stringer. but marlo always looked like he hated it.

same deal with pusha. i've always found him to be extremely unconvincing when he's "having fun". when he does these tracks like "i'm good" i got a serious uncanny valley creeped outedness. even in that video. i'm sorry, i guess i just refuse to believe that him and tyler the creator are friends.

also im canadian so kind of quasi british i guess. i even said i'm sorry there

fennel cartwright, Tuesday, 18 March 2014 07:27 (twelve years ago)

i think your overall gist is pretty close to how i feel. especially, like, "my name is my name"...that wasn't a hot line! that was him being foolish! and the other big line of his that people quote, "you want it to be one way, but it's the other way"...i kinda do think the writers wanted him to come off stupid.

thanks for responding FC.
marlo's nihilistic because american society has basically told him and everyone he knows to die in the gutter/prison. his world is really grim! he keeps relentlessly and joylessly gobbling up power because he can't help himself. it's a personality type that is rewarded here.

i basically imagine the 1% wealthiest people IRL to be as sociopathic and single-minded about power as marlo is, i mean how else could they live with themselves? i don't imagine they're any happier than marlo is, either. just read that article about mitt romney moping around the house after he lost the election.

marlo's basically a test case for what happens when capitalism is completely unregulated...you get some scary ppl running things.

slam dunk, Tuesday, 18 March 2014 22:03 (twelve years ago)

"you want it to be one way, but it's the other way"-the security guard is pleading with marlo for a small measure of dignity and respect for his fellow human being. marlo is saying no, that's not how society works. and i have more money and power than you do, so i'm right.

X: Is it weird that you see coke Rap becoming a type of popular mainstream thing?

Pusha T: Yeah. I was just talking to CNN about coke Rap. And I was like, “Man, that’s so funny, because I know who made that term up.” The person who made that term up was like a blogger who loves Pusha T and Malice for articulate Rap and metaphors and things like that. But to coin it “coke Rap”—to love me for what you love me for and coin it that—is annoying. But it is what it is. They make these subcultures and genres. They didn’t call it coke Rap when Melle Mel was rhyming about the streets and so on and so forth. So it’s whatever.

DX: Well the idea of cocaine went from moving weight to something people stuff in their makeup compact at dance parties…

Pusha T: Yeah, that’s reality. It’s not called, “coke EDM” either. They don’t do that at all.

yeah beanie i didn't recognize at first, i think he's had a hard decade

"Crutches, Crosses, Caskets" and Jill Scott's appearance on "Sunshine" = A+

The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 13 January 2016 02:52 (ten years ago)

Album is solid but I don't think it has real standouts, except "Keep Dealing." As far as Timbaland goes, "Untouchable" is good not great, poorly integrated chorus though. "Got Em Covered" is nails on chalkboard.

Idk any big negative reason to single dude out. He's a rapper that gets overpraised by a certain kind of fan and...that's mostly it.

nova, Wednesday, 13 January 2016 16:49 (ten years ago)

this is pretty good - is every track going to be on "king push" proper?

the late great, Friday, 15 January 2016 07:00 (ten years ago)

this seems quite good, and enjoyably surprising - the track with beanie (who sounds bizarre) sounds like it could have been produced by el-p (did he use this sample for someone else?). so i give him props for trying something a bit artier, but im not sure it really gels, and i dunno if i really want to hear pusha going arty. as a rapper, i think hes at the bottom of his barrel at this point and has nothing new to say, or no new way of repeating his usual content in a way we havent heard already.

StillAdvance, Monday, 18 January 2016 12:37 (ten years ago)

actually, its more a split between more trad stuff (MPA sounds like something from kanye's dark twisted fantasy) and the slightly outre stuff isnt it...

StillAdvance, Monday, 18 January 2016 12:51 (ten years ago)

beans might have had part of his lung removed cut him some slack. voice is still there but not the power. he sounded like this whenever he popped up in 2015.

dylannn, Monday, 18 January 2016 16:39 (ten years ago)

love the way he can sound conversational, quickfire lock a bunch of lines together with just the tempo or some internal rhyme or hitting the assonance riding the beat and closing with a couplet quotable. never get tired of coke dealing similes, monocle magazine eye for meaningful luxury reference.

morning wood truancy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 25 May 2018 15:38 (seven years ago)

i think you mean that as a diss but being the paul mccartney of cocaine sounds pretty awesome

The Desus & Mero Chain (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Friday, 25 May 2018 15:40 (seven years ago)

also i dig kanye's beats on this more than lots of stuff on tlop or yeezus

The Desus & Mero Chain (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Friday, 25 May 2018 15:41 (seven years ago)

I didn't! I should've followed the advice I give students and use semicolons as often as possible.

morning wood truancy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 25 May 2018 15:41 (seven years ago)

pusha seems pretty likeable to me, and i'm happy he's getting his moment. he deserves a thread with a better name than this one!

― alpine static, Monday, March 17, 2014 10:19 AM (four years ago)

i repeat: Pusha deserves a thread with a better name.

― alpine static, Tuesday, January 12, 2016 3:18 PM (two years ago)

this is still true!

alpine static, Wednesday, 30 May 2018 00:37 (seven years ago)

The verse is one thing but the fact that he unearthed this in the process is just... wow

tsrobodo, Wednesday, 30 May 2018 12:16 (seven years ago)

been enjoying the "nardwuar helped" jokes on twitter, though of course he would never strike against a fellow canuck

Simon H., Wednesday, 30 May 2018 12:20 (seven years ago)

Yeah a lot of that shit was personal but not "Nardwuar" random and obscure personal

tsrobodo, Wednesday, 30 May 2018 12:43 (seven years ago)

lost in the madness is the fact that "Adidon" is a terrible name for a shoe line and even worse coming from someone who supposedly uses wordplay for a living.

808s & Deep States (voodoo chili), Wednesday, 30 May 2018 13:10 (seven years ago)

It's magnitudes worse if the bar about him using the line reveal to go public about his son has any truth to it.

tsrobodo, Wednesday, 30 May 2018 14:12 (seven years ago)

I'm all in for this ridiculous moment except for dissing a dude for having multiple sclerosis, but maybe my priorities are fucked up

(ノಠ益ಠ)ノ彡┻━┻ (mh), Wednesday, 30 May 2018 16:40 (seven years ago)

No I believe it's a healthy reaction, multiple sclerosis sucks.

Van Horn Street, Wednesday, 30 May 2018 16:51 (seven years ago)

I'm all in for this ridiculous moment except for dissing a dude for having multiple sclerosis, but maybe my priorities are fucked up

yeah that was below the belt. leave producers out of it!

Simon H., Wednesday, 30 May 2018 16:56 (seven years ago)

Is it problematic to post a black face out of context just to draw the ire of someone?

Van Horn Street, Wednesday, 30 May 2018 20:11 (seven years ago)

I got the impression that the photos that Drake apparently commissioned himself (!) in blackface never had a very good context to begin with so they're fair game

mh, Wednesday, 30 May 2018 20:39 (seven years ago)

receipts

lowercase (eric), Wednesday, 30 May 2018 20:51 (seven years ago)

So um I have no idea how Drake will respond to this one

josh az (2011nostalgia), Thursday, 31 May 2018 05:56 (seven years ago)

the only thing drake can do now is drop a track to make pusha feel bad about hurting his feelings. "you found my blackface pics, man that really scars / i guess the T in Pusha T stands for 'took it too far'"

awesome interview, whiney. particularly loled at this part:

What was Wyoming like for you?
I didn't know what to expect, but I knew we were going to work and we were going to get all the work done. Absolutely, positively nothing but focus in a place like that. Totally not a outdoors person, I'm not into it. I'm not into wildlife. I'm not into moose. I'm not into mountain lions. I'm not into foxes, coyotes. I'm not into birds with long wingspans, snakes, hate it all. Hate it all.

Hiking?
Hate it. Not my thing.

How many times have you been camping in your lifetime?
Never. Never camping, never going. What you do is you camp out in these amazing mountain mansions.

808s & Deep States (voodoo chili), Monday, 4 June 2018 18:38 (seven years ago)

pusha sounds like he's got Stockholm Syndrome in all these interviews. i'm kinda surprised Daytona is as good as it is.

alpine static, Monday, 4 June 2018 23:14 (seven years ago)

“I’m not into birds with long wing spans” killed me lmfao

Is the sample on "What Would Meek Do?" from "Heart of the Sunrise"?

Mario Meatwagon (Moodles), Saturday, 7 July 2018 17:00 (seven years ago)

Just listened and yes, definitely! From the very beginning, in the little break following the introduction of the main bass riff.

saw push tonight, not bad live!

we’ve got to save him from this good music executive role, though, because there were too many musical montages of his guest spots in the middle of the show instead of full tracks of his own material. at the least his dj could have done more interpolation, maybe lyrics over diff beats

The new Pusha T single with Lauryn Hill and production from Kanye West is such a great track !
(this thread's title is not really appropriate for my post but I didn't find another one about Pusha T...).

Really ? It's certainly one of my favourite Kanye related tracks of the last decade (that doesn't say much though).
And following the Pusha Vs Drake clash, it's kinda funny that Drake had a hit with a L. Hill sample... and now Pusha has L. Hill for real on this !

AlXTC from Paris, Tuesday, 10 September 2019 13:00 (six years ago)

does it really count as an appearance if everyone's phoning it in?

the variety review is getting dragged, but there's nothing wrong with being sick of pusha's particular thing. where the reviewer went wrong, i guess, is that you shouldn't wish that pusha were a different artist (he clearly will never change), it's that you should listen to somebody else.
