How many artists could drop a new album and get as much internet buzz as MBV is right now?

Radiohead? Neutral Milk Hotel? Perhaps the new Bowie?

If The Smiths dropped an album out of nowhere right this very moment the internet would just die.

Beck? Radiohead?

skip, Monday, 4 February 2013 22:02 (twelve years ago)

Neutral Milk Hotel.

Van Horn Street, Monday, 4 February 2013 22:03 (twelve years ago)

Yeah NMH was the only artist I could think of that could potentially generate that type of "holy shit" reaction among those who worshipped Aeroplane their whole lives. MBV was like a perfect storm of an incredibly long wait and a body of work that's actually held up quite well.

Radiohead could do it - the internet pretty much exploded when In Rainbows came out. TKoL was the same I guess but I wonder if that's sort of tapered expectations a bit.

Nine Inch Nails, maybe 5-6 years ago?

frogbs, Monday, 4 February 2013 22:06 (twelve years ago)

destroyer's followup to "kaputt" will probably crash many a site.

Maybe the Pixies?

Emperor Cos Dashit (Adam Bruneau), Monday, 4 February 2013 22:10 (twelve years ago)

slint are doing something, right? thought i read that. probably wouldn't be THAT huge though.

scott seward, Monday, 4 February 2013 22:10 (twelve years ago)

oh yes, if Pavement announces there is a release in 2-3 days. then yeah, i can see people getting really really hyped.

Van Horn Street, Monday, 4 February 2013 22:10 (twelve years ago)

i was talking to someone the other day about kate bush and i said if she ever decided to tour in the u.s. it would create riots in the streets. which is hyperbole but i bet she could sell out huge arenas here in minutes. so, she might be able to crash ticket sites anyway. that would be pretty major for millions of people.

scott seward, Monday, 4 February 2013 22:12 (twelve years ago)

The remaining members of Nirvana featuring Paul McCartney.

MarkoP, Monday, 4 February 2013 22:13 (twelve years ago)

Kate Bush has been releasing records tho. Touring would be another story.

Emperor Cos Dashit (Adam Bruneau), Monday, 4 February 2013 22:14 (twelve years ago)

pfunkboy (Algerian Goalkeeper), Monday, 4 February 2013 22:16 (twelve years ago)

which is hyperbole but i bet she could sell out huge arenas here in minutes.

I love Kate Bush too, but there is no fucking way she would sell out "arenas" at this point, come on.

Stone Roses are sort of unknown over here

Welcome to my world of proses (Shakey Mo Collier), Monday, 4 February 2013 22:19 (twelve years ago)

Considering how much was written about that awful Tron soundtrack I'm sure Daft Punk could break some things

frogbs, Monday, 4 February 2013 22:20 (twelve years ago)

it doesnt really matter as the roses big moment was those gigs. But i assure you it would be a massive deal over here

pfunkboy (Algerian Goalkeeper), Monday, 4 February 2013 22:20 (twelve years ago)

how about the KLF?

frogbs, Monday, 4 February 2013 22:24 (twelve years ago)

"I love Kate Bush too, but there is no fucking way she would sell out "arenas" at this point, come on."

do you have any idea how many people love her in the states? teenagers on up to oldies like me. LOTS of people who would never think they would ever live to see her live. probably the most popular "cult" artist in the states that i can think of. the only person i can compare her to is tom waits as far as having such a wide-range of fans. from people who have been fans for decades to teens.

scott seward, Monday, 4 February 2013 22:25 (twelve years ago)

you are high

Welcome to my world of proses (Shakey Mo Collier), Monday, 4 February 2013 22:26 (twelve years ago)

scott seward, Monday, 4 February 2013 22:27 (twelve years ago)

the postal service is playing the brooklyn nets' new arena; pretty sure kate could pull that off. maybe not in pittsburgh or wherever tho

mookieproof, Monday, 4 February 2013 22:28 (twelve years ago)

I mean maybe we're working with different definitions of "arenas" here but, fwiw, I don't think even Coldplay sold out all of the arenas they played on their latest tour.

HAPPY BDAY TOOTS (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Monday, 4 February 2013 22:28 (twelve years ago)

they also tour a lot.

scott seward, Monday, 4 February 2013 22:29 (twelve years ago)

you are underestimating the once in a lifetime angle. she has very devoted fans.

scott seward, Monday, 4 February 2013 22:30 (twelve years ago)

I am pretty sure no person that I know who is not ilx-related has ever heard of kate bush

iatee, Monday, 4 February 2013 22:30 (twelve years ago)

I think a new pink floyd with roger waters in the band or a new led zep album might break the internet

pfunkboy (Algerian Goalkeeper), Monday, 4 February 2013 22:31 (twelve years ago)

she has sold millions of records here. she continues to sell a ton of records in her back catalog. and she has never performed live here. you do the math!

scott seward, Monday, 4 February 2013 22:31 (twelve years ago)

is Big Boi on this theoretical tour with her that might sell some more tickets

Welcome to my world of proses (Shakey Mo Collier), Monday, 4 February 2013 22:32 (twelve years ago)

she could change her name to kate(y) (bush) perry and try and trick teen girls into going to her stadium concert

iatee, Monday, 4 February 2013 22:34 (twelve years ago)

when they arrive she will explain that she has sold millions of records and performs well on ILM polls

iatee, Monday, 4 February 2013 22:35 (twelve years ago)

mookie otm -- kate could sell out an arena in some places but probably not others. it's a good answer though. i would purchase all this kate bush tickets.

At one time I might have said the New York Dolls, which shows you how easy it is to confuse your own sense of a band's place in history with the rest of the world's--they put out a new one (and then another) and nobody cared. Plus, again, too many dead people. I'd like to think a new Husker Du album would be a big deal, but that's probably a fantasy too.

scott seward, Tuesday, 5 February 2013 01:59 (twelve years ago)

I'm really glad they went that route. It fits the album. If there had been endless Pitchfork pieces building up for a month beforehand it would have inflated the hype bubble. It's a more personal approach. The only way you could get to it was through their website. The web traffic delayed things a bit and you had communities building up of people talking about it, like a digital version of an early morning record store line. I hope reviewers taken into account the way they released this because I'm sure it was heavily weighed upon.

Emperor Cos Dashit (Adam Bruneau), Tuesday, 5 February 2013 02:13 (twelve years ago)

u.s. soundscan numbers from 1991 to 2006. so, no sales numbers prior to 1991 or post 2006. around 1.2 million in that fifteen year period. so, you figure from the 70's until 1991 how many records? and from 2006 until now how many records?

The Kick Inside 74,000 (01/2006)
Lionheart 28,000 (01/2006)
Never for Ever 39,000 (01/2006)
The Dreaming 42,000 (01/2006)
Hounds of Love 206,000 (01/2006)
The Whole Story 195,000 (01/2006)
The Sensual World 242,000 (01/2006)
The Red Shoes 298,000 (01/2006)
Aerial 102,000 (08/2006)

probably at least another million or so in the times not documented. maybe more. plus, itunes and the like now. plus, secondary sales like my store. if i've sold 100 in four years in my tiny shop other stores must sell a ton more and i don't even sell used CDs much so if you count those sales she's sold at least 400,000,000 records in this country if my calculations are correct.

seriously though, people are hyped about this MBV record because, irrespective of how it sounds or how many years have lapsed, it's the followup to Loveless that people anticipated with bated breath before finally resigning themselves to never hearing. people were conceptualising the album in their heads before it was a product. it's to do with the journey and stigma of the album itself, which by this stage is actually a seperate entity from the actual aura of the band. MBV's live shows don't get anywhere near this level of attention; their show here in Sydney (which is hilariously going for $100) hasn't even sold out. i can't imagine people flipping out about a hypothetical "long-awaited follow-up to Strangeways" on anywhere near the same level. the Smiths actually reforming? now that would be a big deal, but people would get used to the idea pretty quickly.

there are literally millions of people who eagerly await new pearl jam albums! we just don't know who they are.

scott seward, Tuesday, 5 February 2013 03:45 (twelve years ago)

kate bush/pearljam vs lou reed/metallica

buzza, Tuesday, 5 February 2013 03:50 (twelve years ago)

i would be more interested in a bush/reed album tbrr

i guess i'd just rather listen to canned heat? (ian), Tuesday, 5 February 2013 03:51 (twelve years ago)

pearl jam's last album sold millions around the world and they put it out on their own label. and they have deals with tons of companies. and they tour forever. they are REALLY saving for their retirement. they are no slackers even if they speak to the slack. and yet so easily avoidable. kudos, PJ!

scott seward, Tuesday, 5 February 2013 03:53 (twelve years ago)

jesus no keep lou away from kate.

scott seward, Tuesday, 5 February 2013 03:53 (twelve years ago)

harry connick jr. and chris stamey also very pissed that they were upstaged like this:

scott seward, Tuesday, 5 February 2013 05:52 (twelve years ago)

boards of canada, as noted above, is a very reasonable answer. there's that distance of release, obviously, but i can't argue for groups like the smiths as i know *exactly* what their next release would roughly sound like. with BoC, you get that it'll retain their most classic elements and yet at the same time - especially considering the leap to acoustic-infusion with their last release - you have little idea of what to expect. the only bands that can stir this kind of momentum are ones that are self-consciosly progressive.

kelpolaris, Tuesday, 5 February 2013 05:54 (twelve years ago)

new matmos and bret michaels albums so synergistically close to each other though. good for both parties.

scott seward, Tuesday, 5 February 2013 05:55 (twelve years ago)

I'm thinking maybe A Tribe Called Quest

Leopard Skin POLL-Box Hat (James Redd and the Blecchs), Tuesday, 5 February 2013 06:00 (twelve years ago)

The correct answer is "none". No one could do this in the same way as MBV, because we haven't been promised the new full length for two decades from anyone else. The closest name already mentioned is Aphex, if only because he's dropped hints at having this vintage arsenal of tracks to unleash, you know, one of these days, they're just sitting there in the vaults. No one else has been slavishly working out the kinks for so long that they haven't put out an lp every once in a while, reformed, or just simply said "no" like MBV has.

Thinspo Merkin Life (Spectrist), Tuesday, 5 February 2013 06:06 (twelve years ago)

they haven't put out an lp every once in a while (Kate Bush), reformed (Pavement), or just simply said "no" (Smiths, ABBA)

The level of devotion from the Loveless follow-up is a horse of a different colour from Chinese Democracy or Smile, but despite the comically heavy interest for these I wonder why? Why didn't they break the internet?

Thinspo Merkin Life (Spectrist), Tuesday, 5 February 2013 06:14 (twelve years ago)

Because they weren't released on the Internet?

jaymc, Tuesday, 5 February 2013 06:29 (twelve years ago)

lol. jay-z had more buzz off an album when he was retired for like 4 years.

Yeah, completely off the map in the public eye, with only the occasional cryptic interview, and leaving Shields to low profile collab releases w Linkin Park and R Kelly in the interim.

Thinspo Merkin Life (Spectrist), Tuesday, 5 February 2013 06:52 (twelve years ago)

yeah MBV has been completely out of the public eye, what with people elevating them to god status and then writing tomes about their album

d'eejban (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 5 February 2013 06:55 (twelve years ago)

Dude, to be fair, I'm only nominally interested in MBV's music (and Jay-Z's) but the crosstalk both online and irl is sorta deafening, and it's honestly pretty weird cos I've heard chatter from the shoegaze camp amongst my friends at a level equiv to duck farts across a lake for years re mbv's amazing new long awaited tuneage

Thinspo Merkin Life (Spectrist), Tuesday, 5 February 2013 06:59 (twelve years ago)

right. well in my neck of the woods, this album is getting as much burn as any old album that drops with a 24-hour lead time.

d'eejban (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 5 February 2013 07:00 (twelve years ago)

and anyway, only in rock music can a band peace out for 2 decades and still come back as if they walk on water. a rapper or pop artist couldn't pull a stunt like this because people would cease to give a shit after a certain point way, way before 20 years.

xp Good points. Artists in the future are going to have a far slimmer era of interest to fall off the radar then phoenix again, since the important peeps prob won't have full blossom careers that extend so long, regardless of genre (rock is fucking dead i've heard)

d'eejban (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 5 February 2013 07:34 (twelve years ago)

when lauryn announced a tour, not even new material, it got this much buzz, which = a hell of a lot among people who already care about her, but outside that you could happily ignore it. what a weird thread. j0rdan otm about how any given band with a passionate fanbase could do this.

lex pretend, Tuesday, 5 February 2013 07:42 (twelve years ago)

also are people really bringing up kate bush's sales to make the point that she's not as big a deal as...MY BLOODY VALENTINE? smh

lex pretend, Tuesday, 5 February 2013 07:43 (twelve years ago)

Outside of indie music circles, nobody gives a fuck. This is not like the Bowie thing the other week, or anywhere near close to In Rainbows dropping, which was all over breakfast TV in the UK.

they all are afflicted with a sickness of existence (Scik Mouthy), Tuesday, 5 February 2013 08:04 (twelve years ago)

seems bigger than the Bowie thing from the other week...?

somebody mentioned SNL earlier itt: think they got a shot at appearing this season?

Drugs A. Money, Tuesday, 5 February 2013 09:23 (twelve years ago)

The Bowie thing was all over mainstream media; this is very much saturation in a certain demographic's sphere, but little beyond that. There's also an amount of instant criticism here - because we can actually listen to the full record - that wasn't there with the Bowie thing, because that was only a single.

I was bringing it up to refute Scott's point that Kate Bush could sell out arenas across the U.S.

But I'm guessing she's still better-known here than MBV is, since she's at least had a couple of minor hits.

jaymc, Tuesday, 5 February 2013 18:23 (twelve years ago)

Reformed Husker Du with all original members would attract some interest.

Based on the love the limited semi-reunion dates received, I would think a new Faith No More album would garner some buzz. Even more if Jim Martin was involved.

Maybe a Guns N' Roses reunion with the real line-up and not just fat Axl.

Talking Heads, for sure.

Loud guitars shit all over "Bette Davis Eyes" (NYCNative), Tuesday, 5 February 2013 18:35 (twelve years ago)

I'll cede that it's rare for an act to disappear for as long as MBV did and have a new release be treated by most of its fans as a serious artistic statement in continuation with its legacy, rather than just a greed- or nostalgia-motivated attempt to recapture something of the past. But that doesn't mean those other attempts wouldn't get way more people excited.

Just listened to this album for the first time... I liked it! The tracks are a little repetitive, but they're cool and sound great. It's not really what I was expecting, from the band's rep.
