nvm now it's "payphone"
Halestorm is an American rock band from Red Lion, Pennsylvania.[1] The group's self-titled debut album was released on April 28, 2009 through Atlantic Records. Their second album The Strange Case Of... was released on April 10, 2012. The song "Love Bites (And So Do I)" from that album won a Grammy Award for Best Hard Rock/Metal Performance on Feb. 10, 2013.
They announce the inferior group of awards beforehand now?

Since a certain ILK poster asked me on my FB, I shall repeat it here:
Actually Halestorm are from not far from here, about 90 miles into central Pennsylvania, the area that Obama said clings to their guns and religion but that also loves them some hair metal still (it's the region that birthed Poison into existence). As such, they have got a lot of love from the local rock stations for some time now. And I *like* Halestorm! They sound like Skid Row with a chick singer. I'm okay with that, really. They do it quite well.
They're on their second release. I liked this song off their debut quite a bit for the lyrical surprise and killer riff:

http://www.nytimes.com/2013/02/12/arts/music/grammy-voters-reward-sounds-of-the-past.html?_r=0
What’s more, there remains a serious misalignment between the shape, scale and range of what popular music is and what the Grammys capture. It remains reliably boneheaded about hip-hop, R&B and country, a point it proved this year with its showering of riches upon the full spectrum of vanguard-free rock bands. The garage-rock revivalists Black Keys won three awards, for best rock performance, best rock song and best rock album, and group member Dan Auerbach won for producer of the year, nonclassical. The Queen imitators Fun. won best new artist and song of the year, and Peter Gabriel-manqué Gotye won record of the year, best pop duo/group performance, and best alternative music album. Dustbowl fetishists Mumford & Sons won album of the year, the night’s top prize. It was the award ceremony equivalent of spreading bets on a roulette table or giving out participation ribbons at a summer camp track meet.
― flopson, Monday, 11 February 2013 17:10 (twelve years ago)
Adele won best pop solo performance for the second year running, for a live version of a song released a year earlier, beating out Kelly Clarkson, Katy Perry, Rihanna and Carly Rae Jepsen in what was either pure travesty or the richest parody in Grammy history. Do Grammy voters receive a shock every time they vote for someone other than Adele?
this would be more of a travesty if 21 weren't the best selling album of 2012

the Caramanica thing kind of overlooks that Gotye and fun.'s singles and Mumford and fun.'s albums racked up more sales and spins than pretty much any R&B or hip-hop record. in a lot of recent years, you could paint the Grammys as leaning more toward rock than the rest of popular music, but not so much for 2012-2013.

kinda think everyone on fb who was complaining about the frank ocean performance is prob not familiar with the frank ocean album
― call all destroyer, Monday, 11 February 2013 17:28 (twelve years ago)
like it SHOULD be shocking that Kelly Clarkson hadn't heard of Miguel before last night, even though he's had the biggest song on R&B radio two years in a row, but it really isn't.

I can see why frank wanted to do Forrest gump. If bad religion on Fallon was his big breakout tv moment, why not do the other same-sex song and look brave in front of an industry audience? Prob is, the song is not great, and he sounded terrible. I don't like to play frank against Miguel. Both albums were among my favorites of 2012, and I might've even liked frank's better. But last night, Miguel's perf was much more impressive.
― jaymc, Tuesday, 12 February 2013 01:38 (twelve years ago)
I watched this show, btw, with my mom and stepdad. Their thoughts:
Taylor Swift: Performance doesn't match the sentiment of the song. Song too overproduced, anyway.Fun: Do they realize they're being rained on?Maroon 5/Alicia Keys: Both Keys and Levine are incredibly talented. Love the chorus of Girl on Fire. Best perf of night, probably.Rihanna: Song is slow and boring. Very pretty tho.Black Keys: What a story. Saw them on 60 Minutes, apparently no one knew about the band for years and years and now suddenly they're famous. Just a couple guys from Ohio. Who is that guy with the weird costume playing keyboard, tho?Kelly Clarkson: So talented. What a great voice. Tennessee Waltz! She definitely deserves to win something.Bruno Mars: Young guy, has so much energy. I'd like to hear more from him.Jack White: How famous is he, exactly? Like, does he play arenas? [NB: I'm still not sure what was behind this question.]Neil Patrick Harris: What a phony. So smug. Does anyone actually like him?The-Dream: Who is this guy? What's up with the hat and the chains? Not classy.

Frank Ocean killed it if you don't actually want your musical performances to be musical

Sorry people but I am so baffled by anyone not realizing that the frank ocean thing was terrible, like this is not an opinion thing. It's still ok to like him! You don't need to pretend that performance wasn't horseshit to do so.

the frank performance was the kind of thing i can see fans of his thinking was fine and defending, but i doubt it won him any new fans. he definitely didn't nail it or anything. and the whistling definitely sucked

the frank ocean perf didn't sound that off from what's on the album, and I thought it was really heartwarming to see how sort of nervous but also into it he was. there have been way worse televised taylor performances from the early part of her career than what frank sang
― 乒乓, Tuesday, 12 February 2013 03:49 (twelve years ago)
Yeah I dont think its the travesty its being made out to be. The running thing was kinda weird/distracting but I still thought it was way more intriguing than the Carrie Underwood dress gimmick.
― skeet-skeet-gate (Spottie_Ottie_Dope), Tuesday, 12 February 2013 03:53 (twelve years ago)
it was just kinda awkward i think. like even the camera angle. sometimes i think people can never look okay while they are pivoting their head backwards to look at someone, like it's just such an awkward pose to have turned your neck 120 degrees, be trying to maintaining eye contact while straining your muscles. & last night the camera was just always a little above him, so he was having to look up under a furrowed brow while he was probably concentrating on piano keys. it felt like he was throwing in some of the prettier oohs to take the edge off the notes he was hitting/missing singing (i figured he probably just couldn't really hear himself?, idk). he always seems very purposefully collected & still & last night he seemed a lil crumpled.
― schlump, Tuesday, 12 February 2013 03:57 (twelve years ago)
Just seems like that's his schtick though kinda.
― skeet-skeet-gate (Spottie_Ottie_Dope), Tuesday, 12 February 2013 03:59 (twelve years ago)

Yes but at least she did sing a couple of notes on key. I'm sorry I sound like a hater cause I'm not, but there's just no defending FB's singing in that performance. I too thought maybe he couldn't hear himself or his keyboard or something. And I thought how confusing it must've been for all those people that heard so much praise about him, but had never actually heard him. Definitely a missed opportunity.
― LeRooLeRoo, Tuesday, 12 February 2013 06:27 (twelve years ago)

― Alice 2 Chainz - "I Luv Dem Bones" (zachlyon), Tuesday, 12 February 2013 06:46 (twelve years ago)
i think it's cause his rise has been from non-r&b fans who don't expect the conventional vocal chops. frank ocean's appeal is his lyrics and some of his song-writing / production choices, not his singing. i think "sweet life" or "sweet life" would have been better grammy songs. "forrest gump" is good but maybe too half-baked of a song idea for a grammy performance.

― Eggs and the marketing board behind them, Tuesday, 12 February 2013 07:54 (twelve years ago)
i heard several folks talking positively ("he is hot and wow can he sing") about Miguel today who i wouldn't have expected (a) to watch the Grammys, and (b) to even be paying enough attention to process his name and short performance. what i am trying to say is: he made the most of it.
― alpine static, Tuesday, 12 February 2013 08:26 (twelve years ago)
I'm not sure that dude has given enough consideration to writing songs with the limitations of his voice in mind. A lot of his songs operate towards the bottom of his register and while that's perfectly workable in the studio, he inevitably ends up flat when projecting live.
― tsrobodo, Tuesday, 12 February 2013 08:27 (twelve years ago)
Also I wouldn't put too much emphasis on the importance of conventional vocal chops. It's easy enough to feign with the right histrionic inflections.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qykeDey6Oxwsee also: Ne/Yo, Keri Hilson, Trey Songz etc.
