was listening to the Blawan one today. haven't heard any others to compare it with, but it sounds like Blawan if you can imagine that.

Big fan of the Kassem Mosse one from a while back.

matt2, Thursday, 21 February 2013 16:35 (twelve years ago)

Nina Kravitz was banging out the acid trax last night....very nice. Any sign of a recording of Ben UFO's epic 4-hour set?

millmeister, Thursday, 21 February 2013 16:58 (twelve years ago)

so many. love seeing the l.a. ones with low end theory crew.

queeple qua queeple (Jordan), Thursday, 21 February 2013 17:06 (twelve years ago)

is it a club situation? or just a room with shit set up and 20 (or less often, looks like) people standing around?

andrew m., Thursday, 21 February 2013 17:29 (twelve years ago)

definitely the latter

queeple qua queeple (Jordan), Thursday, 21 February 2013 18:02 (twelve years ago)

It's more like one or two hundred (at least ime). I've been to a couple of boiler room parties but I never watch them bc I hate streaming.

The Reverend, Thursday, 21 February 2013 19:02 (twelve years ago)

But yeah, the ones I went to were just in some random loft, not a club.

The Reverend, Thursday, 21 February 2013 19:02 (twelve years ago)

my favorites are quite old now - actress, the hessle audio takeover (#47) and the rustie warp takeover one

the late great, Thursday, 21 February 2013 19:09 (twelve years ago)

the Sydney one was in a real club, but that club used to be the basement of a Spanish restaurant's kitchen, so

So is this a generic name that can be applied to shows all over the world? Kinda baffled by the concept but I really dug the SND set somebody posted on their thread:

SND. anyone like them?

sleeve, Thursday, 21 February 2013 21:50 (twelve years ago)

It's the people who run it that make it the Boiler Room, not the location.

The Reverend, Thursday, 21 February 2013 22:33 (twelve years ago)

Bicep from last summer. Similar tracklist to their Fader mix, which I also recommend to anyone who likes that kind of thing.

Plasmon, Thursday, 21 February 2013 23:06 (twelve years ago)

dixon and ame from last year.

yeah the Peanut Butter Wolf one was at his house! the 12-hour set on 12/12/12. I watched that one (well a couple hours of it). And the Optimo / Move D was cool (with the Barnt track that everyone freaked out over), linked in the Optimo thread I think.

dmr, Friday, 22 February 2013 02:43 (twelve years ago)

I've been to a couple of boiler room parties

how do they do the invites? just curious. on their website it's like DON'T EMAIL US FOR TICKETS YOU CAN'T COME.

dmr, Friday, 22 February 2013 02:45 (twelve years ago)

oh yeah and the Tim Sweeney one from November was good

dmr, Friday, 22 February 2013 02:49 (twelve years ago)

I've been to a couple as well. Invites were through the venue owner for me and my friends. Very limited though. Room seemed to be 1/4 full and they weren't letting anyone else in. Good vibe but awkward setup. DJ with back to the crowd, crowd all facing Djs back. Very strange.

brotherlovesdub, Friday, 22 February 2013 02:52 (twelve years ago)

my faves are:
nina kraviz from last year. slow burning techno which is just my kinda thing.
prosumer
craig richards
move d
optimo n move d

funny, it never really occurred to me how weird it would feel to be in the room and look at the backs of the performers.

queeple qua queeple (Jordan), Friday, 22 February 2013 15:01 (twelve years ago)

the dixon and ame is prob the best dj set of last year, imo.

Tioc Norris (LocalGarda), Friday, 22 February 2013 15:14 (twelve years ago)

I listen to the kassem mosse one all the time and marcel dettmann is very cool too.

kiubonaco (wolves lacan), Friday, 22 February 2013 15:16 (twelve years ago)

there was a tune on the ame & dixon one (at 35 mins) that i've been trying to id for a while. i heard it a few years ago and shazamed it and got this track:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kP18OuIazKA

but a set list for the ame & dixon boiler room id's it as this track:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=twDDBUi1w3c

but in the youtube comments there are ppl saying this sounds identical to this track;

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sVaAN6HImHU

ridiculous really...

tpp, Friday, 22 February 2013 15:28 (twelve years ago)

is this people ripping off each other's track or something? or just a dixon edit of one of the above?

Tioc Norris (LocalGarda), Friday, 22 February 2013 15:31 (twelve years ago)

yeah those 3 tracks sound extremely similar..some ripping off must have occurred. idk which one dixon played

tpp, Friday, 22 February 2013 15:34 (twelve years ago)

how do they do the invites? just curious. on their website it's like DON'T EMAIL US FOR TICKETS YOU CAN'T COME.

― dmr, Thursday, February 21, 2013 6:45 PM Bookmark

You have to be on their list. For me, it was just a matter of knowing the right people.

brotherlovesdub, were the ones you went to the ones run during decibel this fall? I guess those were a bit more crowded than your description, but if so, we missed each other.

The Reverend, Friday, 22 February 2013 23:29 (twelve years ago)

yes, I was there for those Boiler Room at Substantial events. I suppose maybe half full? Still seemed like they could have fit another 50-100 people in there without much of an issue.

brotherlovesdub, Saturday, 23 February 2013 00:11 (twelve years ago)

That three track soundalike thing is weird. And none of them sound quite like the one used in the Dixon/Ame set (which sounds amazing there).

Tim F, Saturday, 23 February 2013 00:43 (twelve years ago)

Dixon is really secretive about what he plays, I'd assume it's his edit or something. Years ago I remember he mailed me about a (negative) review and we had a good back and forth, and I was talking about some track I liked at the time and he said something about a dub version being better and was like "you will never hear it."

Probably sounds bad but if DJing is your trade it's pretty wise, same way he generally doesn't allow his mixes to be given away for free either, at least relative to others.

Tioc Norris (LocalGarda), Saturday, 23 February 2013 00:47 (twelve years ago)

Ronan did you hear the Loopsize EP with "Retrospective" (the relentless guitar hook house tune in the second half of the Boiler Room set on it)??? I love it so much.

Tim F, Saturday, 23 February 2013 00:49 (twelve years ago)

Which one is that? I'll definitely know it as I listened to that mix a lot. I really like the Dixon edit of Jimpster, like Fleetwood Mac house but trancey enough to avoid the increasingly irritating "everyone here is too drunk" Terje party vibes.

I don't know if it's just me but I feel like Dixon and Michael Mayer have almost swapped in the last year, Innervisions and specfically Dixon's music feels more strict and really close to what Superpitcher or other Kompakt people would do whereas Mayer is more house than before .It's kind of an interesting flip.

Tioc Norris (LocalGarda), Saturday, 23 February 2013 01:06 (twelve years ago)

I posted all the youtubes on the unsurprisingly unpopular LOOPSIZE thread I started:

LOOPSIZE

The track from the Boiler Room set is the first youtube.

Tim F, Saturday, 23 February 2013 03:02 (twelve years ago)

Definitely agree that the Dixon/Ame set is like an amazing epic Mayer or Superpitcher set circa 2004.

It actually has a very specific late 2004 vibe for me, that moment when things were very house and trippy and warm and crunchy but before minimal coalesced into a full-blown thing and not as fetishistic w/r/t deepness or the 90s as 2007 was.

Tim F, Saturday, 23 February 2013 03:04 (twelve years ago)

I am mildly sympathetic to Dixon's POV vs the deluge of edit 12s. I think it's good to encourage the production of one's own edits.

It's a big fuck you from her. Thom Yorke's one is also shocking. It's amazing how a seasoned musician like him seemed to not have a single clue about flow and sequencing. And I haven't even talked about the mixing yet.

OK that Dixon & Ame set is amazing. Obsessed with this now: https://soundcloud.com/sixthfloydrecords/konstantin-sibold-unreleased . I can see the comparison to Superpitcher, track sounds a lot like Mushroom or the Carsten Jost remix on Immer.

not sure how a locked-off camera pointed at a 2-hr DJ set is comparable to smug techno-utopianism?

i really like how they put the DJ in the center of the crowd too, although you do get absolute twats crowding the decks and practically piggy backing on the DJs, i don't know how patience is kept

TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Saturday, 14 February 2015 17:05 (ten years ago)

only seen a couple of these, lutz and koolt in uruguay was an enjoyable set, some good hawaiian shirts to go along the genial sounds

saer, Saturday, 14 February 2015 17:11 (ten years ago)

what is smug techno utopianism? i have no idea what that strawman even is. i just don't want to be on a webcam and i don't want to deal with other idiots who love to be on a webcam, which is like 50% of the crowd at a local spin-off of the boiler room concept called ... "c0ntrol room". barf

mattresslessness, Saturday, 14 February 2015 18:31 (ten years ago)

i mean i'm glad i get to see all these cool sets but at the same time it can be hard on the being-here-now energy that makes a party worthwhile ime (is that smug techno utopianism?) to turn it into a worldwide vlogging event.

oh ok, that makes sense

mattresslessness, Saturday, 14 February 2015 18:52 (ten years ago)

i think the comparison to ted talks is otm in the sense that the aura of performing professionalism has overshadowed the premise of free-flowing idea exchange. i don't know if there was ever a similar utopian element to the boiler room concept internally but when it became a thing i remember being excited by the feeling that the floodgates of dance music, deejaying and party knowledge were about to be opened. now it is obviously just another brand riding on the social media model of participants doing the work for its benefit, not that it ever pretended to be anything else. anyway, not the kind of work i'm excited about doing at a party. just my .02.

mattresslessness, Saturday, 14 February 2015 19:14 (ten years ago)

idk techno but i found the snd one of this on youtube and it looked rather odd with those two in the middle of a room in laptop glare, especially given mark fell's prior quotes

I'm far more comfortable with an audience reacting negatively to what I do, than reacting positively. Like if I’m DJing and people start to nod their heads or move about a bit, I really find it quite unpleasant.

Thomalla
Dakim

There are so many online mix places and great online radio stations where you can search for mixes that I don't see how any of these places will really be able to preserve their online brand or whatever. There was an interview w/ the ppl who started it that some online publication put up recently and they were talking abt focusing more on classical and jazz shows so maybe there will be more ted for other genres in the future

I saw it getting passed around on Twitter, apparently enough for Riz La Teef to delete his account, then a lot of djs coming to his defense:

I feel sorry for Riz La Teef. He publicly apologised to Sherelle for the wheel up on Boiler Room & she accepted. He got caught in the moment and twitter cancelled him. Over what he thought was paying a compliment. At FWD people used to lean in from the crowd & do that every week.

I never really paid any attention to Boiler Room (perhaps because there are just so many of them) but I could see how a disinterested crowd might bug someone. Theres a super theatrical crowd guy that appears on some of the Belfast Boiler Rooms and is now something of a celebrity because of it, but I don't know who's sets he appeared on. I saw a clip but he made me a little anxious!

saer, Tuesday, 16 July 2019 04:33 (five years ago)

Do people actually and actively watch Boiler Room crowds? I tend to just open the video, then leave it playing while I tidy up etc and treat it like a mix I've downloaded. Watching a bunch of 20-year-olds attempt to go viral in the background doesn't really seem fun.
