xp More on Scorpions, it's an underrated song from '78 album Taken By Force, was cool to see it nominated (I presume the one other voter was the one who did that?). I guess their rep was ruined by the bad stuff they put out in the late 80s but up through 1982's Blackout they were just a notch (and a half maybe) below Judas Priest as far as one of the key metal bands.

Actually, no. I nominated it and it was #89 on my ballot. HOWEVER, I didn't actually finish my ballot until I was at work and couldn't submit it. I ended up just sending the top 25 to AG via FB. I feel a little sad now that I see "Sails of Charon" came in at 420. I wonder if my vote would have pushed it over 400?

STUNNED by some of the crazy low placements of some tracks here (i think i had 'stay clean' in my top ten)(and 'jamie's cryin' already wow). happy to see some aor here though worried that probably means little non-boston aor is likely to show up from here on. 'roll with the changes' gets major play in the cabin in the woods. love that scorpions kicks things off, i think i gave them more love in my album votes than tracks.

I mean, I voted for TG, but I'm not going to be "pleased" it placed at this point. And I'm less likely to listen along to a whole four hundred and twenty tracks than I would be to one hundred.

"Barstool Blues" is one of my favorite Neil Young songs. I'm a little surprised to see it place so low, given the Neil Young love around here. I hope I voted for it.

emil.y, iirc the long rollout stems from the idea that the bottom-dwellers are possibly just obscure or neglected instead of awful. the brief spotlight gives voters an opportunity to introduce (or re-introduce) their fave trax/recs and turn other people on to cool shit. the "winning" is in the discovery of new music. (I'd actually talk about the TG and Black Flag and Cab Voltaire, but to the relief of many I'm at work atm and don't have time).

Hardly. The reason I've stopped going on plug.dj is that I've been becoming increasingly fed up with going to bed at stupid o'clock in the morning and not getting enough sleep - it was getting to the point where we were starting to finish at 7 in the morning, which is absolutely no good for me at all, especially when I then grab a couple of hours sleep and then spend all day feeling like a zombie (because life doesn't actually stop for some). AG did suggest that we go on plug earlier and finish earlier, but I would rather cut it out altogether, then the temptation to stay up all night isn't there. I also, I have to admit, was starting to get incredibly fed up with AG badgering me on last.fm night after night "do you wanna plug!? do you wanna plug!? do you wanna plug!?" when sometimes I just wanted to be chilling out and left to do my own thing, and sometimes I would say "no" but yet I'd still get messages from him trying to drag me in there, which was extremely irritating. Equally as irritating is the fact the AG seems to have become incredibly butthurt by my decision to not go on plug.dj anymore - making comments about it in other threads for zero reason and without prompt, sending me sarky private messages on last.fm, even going as far as saying "you'll lose all your friends!" when I told him I wasn't going to stay up all night and plug.dj anymore, which was a tragically funny and not at all bizarre thing to say. No, really.

Anyway, with all this in mind, I'm hardly going to then stay up and do completely the opposite and troll plug.dj, am I? That wouldn't make any sense whatsoever. I very much have time for a lot of plug.dj regulars on here, but I *do not* want to feel like I'm constantly being badgered into something - whether it to vote in a poll, or check something out, or go on plug... and I *do not* want to find myself in a situation where online activity is affecting my very real offline life.

Oh, and I *do not* want to feel like I'm the lead character in someone's paranoid episode either, because if I continue to feel like I'm being incriminated in something that I have absolutely nothing to do with, then it'll not be just plug that I'll be avoiding.

yeah in the us for much of the 70s (i'm not sure when the change comes but i know it's in place by disco really) fm belongs to rock from what i've read/heard. top 40 was still on am but rock still made inroads there - look at this old chart for the big top 40 station in new york for context: http://www.musicradio77.com/Surveys/1972/surveyfeb1572.html . in 2013 mind you contemporary rock has effectively vanished from many cities' airwaves, at least on commercial radio.

there was a year in the nineties when 'carry on wayward son' was the most played song on classic rock radio in america and maaay have been the most played song period. i'm sure it's still very high up there, though the classic rock format is not as strong as it once was (if not nearly as devastated as modern or active rock formats have been).

Obv contemporary rock is really poor just now (don't ever remember it being so poor commercially even if there was really bad shit around - it still sold hence nu metal,post grunge,mall punk etc) but it is weird that radio goes through phases of abandoning it. Don't hear much rap here now either (early mid 90s here was all rap or rock for a while on R1 til spice girls)

Alternative Rock stations still plays stuff from the 90s and the 00s. Only "mix" stations play stuff from like the 60s to today. They are the most popular stations that play at places of business.

in the 80s oldies radio was mainly 50s/60s/some 70s. by the late 90s the 80s was taking over but the 60s hung in there due to popularity of britpop. Now it definitely feels mostly 80s with some 70s and obv beatles/stones from the 60s.

xfm went nationwide on digital (and the same with BBC6 Music) so alternative rock radio I guess did finally happen but its dull as shit and full of nme music

there's a format in the us called "AM Gold" that plays the more mellow stuff from the 60s/70s/80s. The Alternative rock stations will also usually do "New Wave Flashback" blocks where they play 80s stuff.

yeah mtv2 initially to my understanding was amazing - like early mtv w/ randomness and integration but w/ the benefit of many many years of music video production (hence not every third video is rod stewart like in august 1981). the cable provider we had where i lived in the late 90s didn't carry it but the cable provider at the restaurant i was working in did and it really was pretty great - tons of contemporary (at the time) stuff you wouldn't see on mtv (which still was showing videos at this point, just to nowhere near the extent they did during the early 90s nevermind the 80s), plus random videos from pretty much any era, if they had it in their library you stood a shot at seeing it. by the time mtv2 expanded to enough carriers it had become what mtv of say 1991 or 1992 was - music videos yes but broken down into shows (i think this was where and when 120 minutes went to die). at this point there were several other mtv subsidiaries - mtv hits, vh1 classic - so i wasn't too devastated over missing what really was some kind of dream channel. i haven't had cable in many many years but the last time i did mtv2 had progressed to showing reruns of old mtv shows (though i think maybe wonder showzen premiered on mtv2?) w/ some videos here and there. no idea if mtv hits, etc still exist.

xpost - ac/dc catalog is crazy valuable, they're the second biggest selling band this century behind the beatles. you don't need to be on itunes to be on spotify but in general if you're the type of property where it's difficult for even itunes to get you then spotify almost certainly doesn't stand a shot. similar still big selling catalogs spotify can't get near as of yet: bob seger, the eagles, pink floyd, led zeppelin

Eruption is very cool, but VH's version of You Really Got Me is one of the few covers that stands toe to toe with the original.

was verklempt at 'eruption/you really got me' being so low until 'sweet leaf' popping up this early came along to blow my mind.

Funny, some of those FM MOR rock staples were carved into my brain from repeated hearings, but I didn't always connect who was who. For example, I always thought Argent's "Hold Your Head Up" sounded just like Boston, and "Jane" sounded like Aldo Nova, who of course came a couple years later. The Boston, Kansas, Foreigner and Styx songs evoke mixed feelings. I can recognize that they're good, well-crafted songs, but they were so overplayed when I was a kid, I grew to hate them for a long time. As soon as I accumulated enough music, I avoided commercial radio almost completely. Re-listening to them I waver between fuzzy nostalgia and brief flashes of revulsion, ha ha. But so far a nice job in picking the best of the MOR. Sabbath serves as an effective palate cleanser, nice to see them pop up once or twice every ten slots!

yeah i think i'd blanch at a list of all kansas/foreigner/styx as much as i definitely would a list of all standard punk canon choices (well probably not, kansas/foreigner/styx dominating a poll on ilm would be pretty lolworthy) but now that i almost never actually hear that stuff i can appreciate it for the complete abandon, the chops + utter lack of cool, the true goofiness married to such slickness. the mediocre rock of today - coldplay, nickelback, whatever - never even dreams of the cheap thrills something like 'carry on wayward son' delivers out of a sense of professional duty. plus, and this was one reason i wanted to do a 70s poll cuz rock was such a dominant status quo in a way it wasn't really in the 60s or 80s and certainly isn't now that even the safe crap rocked out (the downside of this i guess is that the zombies end up becoming argent). kinda love the heavy presence of queen this low, gives them their due but let's not get carried away. ditto to sabbath as palate cleanser, foreboding/foreshadowing - there's heavy shit on the horizon.

Who rocks more Kansas or The Fall?

OK caught up with everything so far.
Chicago - 25 or 6 to 4 is about 100 times better than I remember it being. Of the stuff that I hadn't heard before, the Todd Rundgren & Ray Russell tracks are both pretty nuts in their own ways.

Think Master Of Sparks might be my favorite ZZ Top tune.

Carry On... by Kansas is one of those ones where the main hook is obv all-time classic but the song overall feels like kind of a mess, like the different sections don't really gel together (IMO anyway).

I agree with Andy M about "Wayward Son". Kansas is still the one AOR/bubbleprog band I can't really get into (sorry D.A.M.!). I'd take just about any band over the Fall though.

Is anyone here really thinking about "looking cool" when they make these ballots?? Also, the reason why AOR stuff isn't 'cool' in North America is because it's so thoroughly mainstream, right? If it never really got radio play in the UK and isn't that much better known than e.g. T. Rex or Roxy in the first place, then I would think that it has to mean something different. It's interesting to think about what would make it 'uncool' in the UK.

Kerrang covered AOR in the 80s (as did RAW) So that probably helped these bands to play the arenas and sell albums. It was never cool though.

Obv the Fall rock more than Kansas, but real Kansas heads know that while Carry On is decent enough, The Wall and Icarus (Born on Wings of Steel) are really where its at.

'I Wanna Destroy You' is totally rocking. And also contains some of the best venomous sentiment in music. However, I didn't check its release date, so I'm sorry for voting for something from 1980.

Also sorry for cutting 'Jailbreak' from my ballot. It was the very last thing I cut, I think. I'm not a big Thin Lizzy fan but I have danced often to that song, it's great.

The Queen song 'Sheer Heart Attack' came out in 1977, not 1974. It was released on the album News Of The World and not, as you would think, on the album Sheer Heart Attack which did come out in 1974. The song was written around the time of Sheer Heart Attack but didn't make the cut for the album, but they dug the song out later on to include on News Of The World. Same applies for 'We Are The Champions', which was also written in 1974 but wasn't recorded/released until 1977.

I love "Sheer Heart Attack." That was my favorite Queen album growing up. I should have nominated "It's Late."

I think I wouldn't have had issues with many of those AOR songs if the radio just had some more variety. Instead of playing a handful of cuts into the ground, it wouldn't have killed them to have included some Sabbath, AC/DC, Cheap Trick, ZZ Top, etc. in the 70s. Hell, the corporate radio I heard never even played much Queen until 1980.

I'm not really heartbroken about Yes and Rush songs placing this low. (And, actually, I see now that I DID vote for "South Side of the Sky" after all.) I just thought it was kind of funny to say that prog is doing very well because many famous tracks are placing in the 300s.

This is a weird one cause the guy's whole discog seems to be on spotify except for whatever this track was released on. Which is a reminder as well that the spotify playlist, as epic as it will be, will not contain a good many awesome tracks.

Magma is another band I need to investigate further. I like Ruins.

Not counting Zeppelin and the Who, I only ranked one other prog track in my top 25 ftr.

Although it's probably cheating to not count Zeppelin.
