also it's totally awesome, which i wasn't totally expecting since i'm still pretty dispirited by "now."

i mean i don't know much about what counts for "good sound" on rock records really but i think this is the best sounding rock record i've heard in years. every element is super crisp.

First thoughts after a few listens:
1. This is good.2. Tacky as it was, I kind of miss the canned heaviness of their previous records3. That being said, they actually sort of sound like a band now, not a bunch of studio effects4. Some of the shouty/glockenspiely punky songs have an early Los Campesinos! quality to them5. The acoustic-y Taylor Swift interludes are tacky6. "Crazy Girls" is an impressive song, right down to the Weezer-y guitar solo
Overall, a much more varied album than I expected from Paramore that still scratches my itch for a Paramore-style record. Not bad.
― Evan R, Tuesday, 2 April 2013 00:19 (twelve years ago)
That being said, they actually sort of sound like a band now, not a bunch of studio effects
eh, one of the things i liked about their original configuration was how they sounded as a band, especially on brand new eyes—farro was an awesome drummer, etc. but i agree despite being kind of an incomplete band they achieve that same sort of chemistry

also the interludes are way more ukulele-youtube-star than swiftian
Didn't Swift used to do the cutesy ukulele thing from time to time?

Precisely.
I think what I love about Paramore is that the emotional impact of each song seems so finely calibrated (though instinctively so), like they can unleash heaviness without smothering you, the emotions feel human-sized and relatable.

― MikoMcha, Friday, 5 April 2013 11:20 (twelve years ago)
I want to clarify that by stating that Brand New Eyes is still a regular go to album for me. Love it more and more over time.
― MikoMcha, Friday, 5 April 2013 11:31 (twelve years ago)
Evan R is otm as far as my first impressions of this album goes - I wanted some tunes with that 'canned heaviness' and the super sharp sound they had. Love BNE.. admittedly I did expect a departure since they specifically talked about some of my favorite songs as types this wouldn't include.
Getting over that there's a lot of enjoy and they still sound like Paramore frequently. Take away the interludes and I can't find too many weakness, really. It's good. Wouldn't mind if Hayley got a bit angry again for their next release, tho.
― abcfsk, Friday, 5 April 2013 12:25 (twelve years ago)
There's some truth to this. Also think it's her phrasing, too. She falls back on the same phrasing a lot, which can make even dissimilar songs bleed together
― Evan R, Friday, 5 April 2013 14:29 (twelve years ago)
Brand New Eyes is still my favorite, but the more time I spend with this one I'm glad it's not a straight reduxe. That album was so tight and focused, but I'm enjoying how loose and leisurely this one is.
― Evan R, Friday, 5 April 2013 14:31 (twelve years ago)
i was really disappointed with brand new eyes at the time bc after how sharp and individual "ignorance" sounded the rest seemed kind of uniform and dull
got over that eventually, but that's definitely not an issue with this record

I wonder if at least one point of distinction is that Lindsay, Ashlee etc. are stars - both in the literal sense of being celebrities but also in that their music is organised around their personalities which the songs present as exceptional, or at least exemplary - they feel the pain that we feel, but they feel it more intensely than we do, they feel it for us.
Whereas I feel with Hayley it's like, she kinda only exists as the personality of the song, I take away no particular interest in her as a fully functioning coherent identity distinct from what she brings to each song. And yet she fills each song completely and perfectly.

I SHOULD BE OVER ALL THE BUTTERFLIIIIIIIIIIES
― markers, Saturday, 6 April 2013 21:23 (twelve years ago)
i really have no idea of ashlee as a celebrity, when i first heard her all i knew was that she was the sister of another pop star i didn't care about much. still don't, really.
listening to paramore i always feel like the singer and personality are buried pretty deeply in the mix, to the songs' detriment
― flamenco drop (lex pretend), Saturday, 6 April 2013 21:34 (twelve years ago)
like she may well be selling the song but it's so indistinct that i almost can't hear her properly
― flamenco drop (lex pretend), Saturday, 6 April 2013 21:35 (twelve years ago)
xxpost YES that line is awesome.
Also abcfsk knows what's up w/r/t "Proof".
― Tim F, Saturday, 6 April 2013 21:35 (twelve years ago)
I'm not saying you care about Ashlee b/c she's literally a celebrity, I'm saying her music is designed to emphasise her personality. Whereas I think Paramore's music does something else - I'd cautiously agree with "the singer and personality are buried pretty deeply in the mix" except I don't think it's detrimental.
― Tim F, Saturday, 6 April 2013 21:36 (twelve years ago)
More like, Hayley's performance are just an extension of the song qua song, like a guitar solo or awesome drum attack.
― Tim F, Saturday, 6 April 2013 21:37 (twelve years ago)
performances even.
i suspect that it might take a proper big hit to make them click with me à la carly rae jepsen
― flamenco drop (lex pretend), Saturday, 6 April 2013 21:42 (twelve years ago)
(who also only exists as the personality of the song)
lots of thematic agreements amongst hayley's songs tho, espesh from brand new eyes on when half of them become about the band (but still tie in to pre-tumult obsessions like self-doubt and fear of being a bad person and faith or unfaith in people or god and her near-religious belief in the importance of being in a rock band). they aren't a Lyrics Band and hayley's not a great writer but if you know specifically what feelings she's overcoming by willing herself to be a rock star sometimes it's more thrilling.
"proof" is my favorite on here i think.
― the white queen and her caustic judgments (difficult listening hour), Saturday, 6 April 2013 21:43 (twelve years ago)
Yes Carly is a very good point of comparison for the distinction I was thinking of!
Did you ever hear "Misery Business" though? That was their big hit in the US (I think due to appearing in Twilight).
yes absolutely, but I think this almost heightens the effect I'm referring to? It's like she's spirit animal of the band's music.
― Tim F, Saturday, 6 April 2013 21:47 (twelve years ago)
i've heard "misery business" but can't remember anything about it, every paramore song i've heard i've had to actively go seeking out - they've never had any hit big enough for me to have heard in the wild

The lyrics may be better on this album but BNE was so.. interesting. The way it was pitched as a 'we're over our troubles' album but the lyrics were clearly full of anger and spite and conflict, which turned out to reflect the mood of the band. Add what dlh mentions about added conflict with her faith and you end up with an album where I was constantly listening to the lyrics when ipodding the album on my way to work.

― infirm neophytic child (zachlyon), Wednesday, 10 April 2013 21:50 (twelve years ago)
um. i didn't realize everyone was making taylor references?
los campesinos! are sonically pretty apt.
i brought up taylor because of the particular subject matter of this song, which is something that...i dunno. not many other people do?
there are lots of pop songs about seduction or breakups but songs about blissful uncomplicated love, new or old or otherwise seem slightly less present these days? maybe i'm being crazy. anyway other than this track and some taylor stuff and the delightful new ariana grande froth that flips a big pun sample i can't think of many recent happy love songs. cher lloyd had a few last year or the year before? mindless behaviour and one direction maybe? but boybands still seem walled off from the pop mainstream in north america in ways that paramore no longer do?
― twinkin' and drinkin' and ready to fly (Alex in Montreal), Wednesday, 10 April 2013 22:03 (twelve years ago)

While the 80s influences are obvious and present on Ain't It Fun, the timing makes me think that someone heard Haim last year and got an idea.
― how's life, Thursday, 11 April 2013 11:05 (twelve years ago)
i like this album bunches. in addition to blissful uncomplicated love there is blissful complicated faith (proof) and turbulent complicated love (crazy girls) and i think she has lots of presence on the ukelele goofs and as far as chiming ballads go i'm pretty into "daydreaming", if less into the one that's a sequel to whichever riot! song that was.

album is so awesome (at least so far, only halfway through first listen, a little daunted by the length). bums me out how clearly they're headed for a Folie a Deux situation of being in that no man's land between pop and rock radio where they end up supported by neither in spite of a great record.

Don't really get why the "Interlude" songs had to be labeled add such or why someone would think they were tacky or "youtube star". There have been plenty of albums that feature more raw, unrefined, or solo performances alongside the stuff thats been more worked up. well, they're short 'solo' sounding tracks amid an album where every other track is a big lavish production of a full length song, and also seem to be kind of thematically linked, so it makes sense that they were labeled that way.

OK, just finished this. On my ride in this morning, I got all wrapped up in the interludes, so when the buys dropped me off, I was listening to the beginning of Future, which reminded me a little ofv the mountain goats in terms of melody and phrasing. And I thought that was a great way to end the album, especially as I stepped or into the light spring rain down here in DC. But uh, I just picked up where I left off and what an ace fuckin coda! That threw me off a little. Have they ever taken it in that direction on any of their earlier releases? I was really only familiar with a few if their singles before this.

http://www.nytimes.com/2013/04/14/arts/music/hayley-williams-of-paramore-on-her-new-album.html?ref=music&_r=0
What do you listen to for inspiration?
I usually like a lot of older music. If I’m listening to a new hit band, it’s because of Taylor. I’m not really a Pitchfork [the music Web site] sort of gal. I was listening to the Shirelles and the Angels, who are my favorites, and even Blondie and the Ramones and that period of punk rock. They were writing pop songs, but they were played by punk bands. Every day in the car it was like, why can’t I play “Heart of Glass”? We finally wrote a song called “Daydreaming,” which is a total rip of “Dreaming” by Blondie, because I couldn’t think of a better title.

ken andrews of failure mixed the record. he's done an excellent job but it's also cool considering york's enthusiasm for the band. justin meldal-johnsen produced this record and is also in andrews' "digital noise academy" project.

Something that strikes me as very notable about both "Still Into You" and "Proof" is how they express uncomplicated joy in a relationship from a position of strength and independence (literally in the case of "Proof": "baby, if I'm half the man I say I am...") without coming across as hamfisted in the process.
― Tim F, Monday, 15 April 2013 22:27 (twelve years ago)
In the first verse of "I'm Not One Of Those Crazy Girls", the way Hayley's voice is deliberately honeyed but you can hear some of the crazed disbelief sneak through when she sings "what do you mean I've got it backwards?" before the suffocating sweetness reasserts itself.

LET'S DO THIS
I've only been all the way through the album a few times, but my initial reaction is that this is just what I want from an American rock band in 2013. And I'm surprised, because I had listened to past Paramore stuff and was always bored. But obv they're a different band now.
― something of an astrological coup (tipsy mothra), Friday, 19 April 2013 03:15 (twelve years ago)
Yeah, I've been listening to this a ton. It's a magnificent record. I've also gone back and listened to all the scattered older paramore tracks that I have and everything I've heard has been pretty unremarkable, barring misery business.
― how's life, Friday, 19 April 2013 09:22 (twelve years ago)
For the record (I had to go look them up) those other songs were Brick By Boring Brick, The Only Exception, and Decode.
― how's life, Friday, 19 April 2013 09:28 (twelve years ago)
"crushcrushcrush" is a favorite of mine. And "That's What You Get" has a magnificent riff/chorus clash.
― maura, Friday, 19 April 2013 09:33 (twelve years ago)
Riot is a pretty great album, but Paramore is definitely better.
― some dude, Friday, 19 April 2013 10:48 (twelve years ago)
I like all of Brand New Eyes but especially:
- both choruses in "Ignorance"- "I FEEL NO SYMPATHY"- "I've got a feeling if I sang this loud enough, you would sing it back to me"- every bit of "Misguided Ghosts"
― Tim F, Friday, 19 April 2013 11:38 (twelve years ago)
Brand New Eyes is cool but so totally the weak link of the three
― some dude, Friday, 19 April 2013 11:53 (twelve years ago)
nah the first record is extremely indistinct toward the end. riot is pretty uneven too. should be also noted that hayley's kind of an awful lyricist until brand new eyes
― emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Friday, 19 April 2013 12:00 (twelve years ago)

which doesn't even capture the full magic of that line, which is in the chorus-line multitracked defiance of "AHH-AHH and when it's dark OUT" like she's snarling at the naysayer in her own head.
― Tim F, Sunday, 21 April 2013 00:41 (twelve years ago)
I'm still trying, the No Doubt thing was the lead single. Best Coast on the interludes. Was also thinking of Karen O moments and Blondie so it was interested to see Haley namecheck them in interviews. There is a lot more stylistic variety than previous Paramore records, I guess I'm still getting accustomed to it.

― Evan R, Thursday, 2 May 2013 18:45 (twelve years ago)
it's really hard for me to imagine liking another record in 2013 more than this. "crazy girls" is kinda fascinating - thematically it's really the only thing besides "misery business" that they've done that posits that she might be an unreliable (or at least unlikable) narrator, which is a hell of a plot twist imo
― scream blahula scream (govern yourself accordingly), Thursday, 2 May 2013 19:49 (twelve years ago)
I've always gotten the unreliable narrator vibe from her; almost half of her songs are blunt about the fact they're written through scorn lenses. That she's so upfront about it (and has an apparent sense of humor about it) is what makes the band so fun to me, and I'm glad she hasn't abandoned that even though this is her "growing up" album

― trick paddy pollars (some dude), Thursday, 16 May 2013 12:45 (twelve years ago)
The only date they have in the Netherlands is a festival called Pink Pop. The line up includes Green Day, Thirty Seconds to Mars, Kings of Leon and Fun. Even I have my limits.
― MikoMcha, Thursday, 16 May 2013 13:02 (twelve years ago)
I saw them at the Warped Tour a few years ago and it really wasn't that great. (Being an adult at the Warped Tour probably had something to do with that, of course, but the performance was kinda one-note.)
― Evan R, Thursday, 16 May 2013 14:18 (twelve years ago)
i saw them at a festival a year after Riot came out and i was right up by the stage, it was awesome!

hah agreed, if a warped tour performance isn't one note then maybe something is up
― 乒乓, Thursday, 16 May 2013 17:00 (twelve years ago)

yeah, it definitely felt like they're figuring out how to arrange the new stuff - i'd be interested to see what their show (and setlist) are like after a few months on the road

Though for a long time I thought the next line was "I left town with a dog and my name". Which made sense to me as the two things you'd take with you.

been a lot of indications that that is the next single ("Anklebiters" got an animated video but isn't a radio single or anything). i wanna believe it'll conquer the world but considering the total lack of airplay "Still Into You" got i'm cautiously optimistic.

was slightly disappointed when i found out after looping this album for a couple of months that the line in "(one of those) crazy girls" wasn't "i'm gonna go to your cousin just so i can smell your skin" but rather "go to your closet". i know in hindsight that didn't really make much sense but i quite liked the image of psycho-haley hunting down all this dude's blood relations to sniff out a close genetic match.

It's currently top 20 on itunes and and getting most of it's radio play from pop radio right now. Don't know why the sudden take off though. Video came out over a month ago, right? They performed it at the Teen Choice Awards this past Sunday and on Conan on Monday, but it was rising on the charts even before that.

the greatest thing about the handclaps is that they make the whole rhythm revolve on this slightly unusual axis, that almost makes it resemble a 7/8 beat even though the whole thing's in 4/4.

i feel like it is going to take a while for "ain't it fun" to make its way to american radio given that "still into you" took forever and has still not run its course... so hopefully the zedd song will not cannibalize it. granted, "clarity" took quite a long time to build on radio as well, so i guess we'll see.
― dyl, Wednesday, 4 September 2013 00:52 (eleven years ago)
actually obtained this whole album and listened to the whole thing -- v rare thing for me, i listen to like 3 full albums at most in a given year. it is so good so far! after 2 listens. literally only heard SIY and anklebiters before. in love with ain't it fun, HTSYHB, grow up. cannot believe "now" was the first single, maybe the worst song on the album and such a buzzkill as track 2. i'm a fan of the interludes cause i'm just 100% pro-hayley rn and you can tell how much she wanted to do them.
― fuck your movie theater yacht (zachlyon), Wednesday, 4 September 2013 02:55 (eleven years ago)
"Now" is good in context of the album but i feel like they've been self-consciously trying to retain rock radio support that has never really been there for them since "Misery Business" anyway -- "Ignorance" as the lead single for the last one kinda the same deal.
― 2 Steenz (some dude), Wednesday, 4 September 2013 02:57 (eleven years ago)
i was thinking the same thing. and i'm having trouble imagining ain't it fun getting any radio play.
― fuck your movie theater yacht (zachlyon), Wednesday, 4 September 2013 03:03 (eleven years ago)
it seems like they'll prob just go straight to pop radio with it like they did with "The Only Exception." "Still Into You" ultimately got moderate pop radio airplay and zero rock radio airplay.
― 2 Steenz (some dude), Wednesday, 4 September 2013 03:10 (eleven years ago)
was actually thinking the opposite, tho i don't listen to hard rock radio much lately. i can see it there if anywhere; hard to imagine a 5-minute track featuring a pop punk gospel breakdown making it on top 40 unless the "don't go cryin" line turns into a meme. which could happen. or it gets featured in an episode of girls.

i see it as sort of the other side of "ain't it fun"'s coin -- hayley is basically your older sister and she's gonna be so fucking snide and proud and SORT OF IRRITATING about it (AIF) and then she'll turn around and remind you exactly why older siblings were invented in the first place and she'll just be exactly what you need at that moment ("hate"). it is possibly the most sincere song ever written? and that is worth smth. like a million pop punk songs could not prepare me for that earnestness.

every song bleeding together and it just recedes to become pleasant background music so so easily for me, i have to really concentrate to pay attention and i can't sustain it. if i pay attention to one song at a time it works a lot better, esp on the stronger ones like "ain't it fun", but really not as an album. i really don't hear much personality in her voice at all. sad about that
― lex pretend, Sunday, 12 January 2014 18:47 (eleven years ago)
i mean maybe if i got on to a lyrics site and paid attention to the songcraft i'd find a way into it but the arrangements and her performances aren't conducive to that at all? aaargh i wish this was better. but i got my sullen teenage girl rock fix last year with sky ferreira i guess? i'm going to listen to that now
― lex pretend, Sunday, 12 January 2014 18:48 (eleven years ago)

lex on a tangential note do you like blondie? i was listening to PL the other day and was wondering if it was lex-approved
― k3vin k., Sunday, 12 January 2014 18:50 (eleven years ago)
yeah i like blondie a lot though more in a "cultural icon" kind of way than a "personal obsession" kind of way. parallel lines is a terrific album but i don't know much else by them
― lex pretend, Sunday, 12 January 2014 18:52 (eleven years ago)
i literally don't know what the songs are about - i don't feel like the lyrics or narratives exactly leap out at you? maybe i should go to a lyrics site. maybe i just want her to be more sullen. i don't know, it slides off my brain completely
― lex pretend, Sunday, 12 January 2014 18:54 (eleven years ago)
and they never did get that ubiquitous pop hit over here that might have been a way in for me. ugh i hate feeling like an album i want to be open to is closed off to me

grown men talking about how a grown woman doesn't fit to their perception of how a sullen teen girl should be
― Murgatroid, Sunday, 12 January 2014 18:56 (eleven years ago)
is it just me or is her voice TOTALLY buried in the mix though? i'm on "last hope" and she's this thin thing smothered underneath the arrangement. how on earth can you tell a word she's singing?
― lex pretend, Sunday, 12 January 2014 18:56 (eleven years ago)
xp i'm not doing that? i'm trying to work out why i don't love an album that on paper should be right in my wheelhouse
― lex pretend, Sunday, 12 January 2014 18:57 (eleven years ago)
i think there's a lot of personality in her voice! but i pin that more to performance more than any intrinsic quality. lots of tiny endearing fluctuations in her voice in "still into you," for instance, or the clipped phrasing in the bridge of "ain't it fun."
she does fall back on the same phrasing, yeah, which is kind of part of the emo pedigree
― emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Sunday, 12 January 2014 18:57 (eleven years ago)
i.... are you listening to a low bitrate version of this or?
― emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Sunday, 12 January 2014 18:59 (eleven years ago)
the album's strongest moments never seem to be about her - it's when they land on a massive chunky riff like "still into you", which i'm finding a lot more fun than "last hope" (which i've already forgotten) but again she may as well not be there! no lyrics coming through except the title phrase and it's all about the arrangement which is still smothering her voice
― lex pretend, Sunday, 12 January 2014 19:00 (eleven years ago)
xp nope, 320s
record is definitely not sullen though, the general attitude is more the euphoria of things locking into place against the odds. plus fuck off old bandmates/boyfriends
― emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Sunday, 12 January 2014 19:01 (eleven years ago)
idk man i've written about how i think one of the most invigorating things about "still into you" is how she works within the arrangement, sort of bouncing off all the instrumental elements
― emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Sunday, 12 January 2014 19:02 (eleven years ago)
down to the "mutha," which even sounds like a second guitar echoing the main riff.

i'm kinda realising i don't actually get any emotion from her voice at all, like literally listening to it and you could tell me she's happy or grumpy and i wouldn't be surprised either way. aaagh it's obviously me not the album but i cannot cannot get into this at all
― lex pretend, Sunday, 12 January 2014 19:05 (eleven years ago)

many xposts, agree w/ brad in that i don't get a sullen vibe from this at all, in fact i'd call it the antithesis of sullen. i hear the most personality in her vocal when she is singing about pure joy i.e. that bridge in "ain't it fun" where all the instruments disappear, or just like all of "still into you"
― pearly-dewdrops' bops (monotony), Sunday, 12 January 2014 19:39 (eleven years ago)

If you struggle finding out what the songs are about, what she is about, why she feels the way she does, I suggest checking out the band's "brand new eyes" record for reference - it's a lot more emo or 'genre' though so whether you like the music or not depends, I dig all the precice riffs and machine gun drums maybe even more than what's on the s/t.
It was a weird record thematically - originally pitched as "we had a fight and got over with" release but the songs were obviously soaked in bitterness, personal conflict, doubt (friendships, religion etc) and anger - really quite stirring stuff. Turned out the members were still screaming in frustration inside. Then two members ditched the gig and now THIS album is that triumphant, joyful thing. Together the two albums make for an interesting narrative. She's better at lyrics now than then but there were def more raw emotions on their previous album.
― abcfsk, Sunday, 12 January 2014 21:05 (eleven years ago)
Seems like a lot of the reason Lex isn't clicking with this in general is the emo remnants, which I guess I a pretty understandable deal breaker. What scans as "emotion" for some listeners scans as absolutely nothing to others

Kind of curious to hear Lex's take on Fall Out Boy. They've been lumped together as this inextricable joint package over the last year (and now quite literally one on this upcoming tour) that I sometimes feel like I'm the only one who passionately loves one of them while finding the other maybe the most insufferable rock group going right now

― abcfsk, Sunday, 12 January 2014 21:19 (eleven years ago)
yeah i'm personally not that interested in the band drama but it certainly gives some context and poignancy to the hard won wisdom and happiness of the new songs -- the throughline from early yay-being-a-band anthems like "Born For This" to the premature yay-we-almost-broke-up-but-didn't mid-period songs like "Looking Up" and all that. xp

i don't really think it's this, it's more like "having hardcore as a baseline for the genre you operate in means you tend to work within limited vocal phrasing" even though this is a billion years removed from hardcore
― emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Monday, 13 January 2014 13:49 (eleven years ago)
but i think that's one of the main points of interest about the band, is the tension between hayley's really impressive voice and her more hardcore instincts

― how's life, Friday, 2 May 2014 11:59 (eleven years ago)
xpost I really don't know how this stuff works, but when the fourth single from a year-old album is the biggest hit, does that mean that:
1) The band/label didn't think that was the best bet for a hit, and have been taken by surprise?2) The band/label had a hunch it could be a big hit, but knew it needed to prime the pump with three other singles first?3) The band/label just threw it out as an afterthought and neither had any idea it had hit potential?
Sort of reminds me of Def Leppard's "Hysteria," where "Pour Some Sugar" was the belated crossover big-hit fourth single.
― Josh in Chicago, Friday, 2 May 2014 12:02 (eleven years ago)
"Ain't It Fun" had been very clearly earmarked as a universal favorite and likely next single since pretty much the release of the album. in fact, they shot a video for the song back in August, 4 months after the album release. then 2 things happened: a) they didn't like the video, and decided to scrap it, and do a video for a UK single release of "Daydreaming" before redoing "Ain't It Fun," and b) "Still Into You" finally became a radio hit, almost 6 months after its initial release, and they let that run its course before launching "Ain't It Fun" with a new video in early 2014. 8 months is a really unusual gap between the release of 2 singles from the same album -- 3 months is the standard, 6 months if it's a really big song -- so it's pretty awesome that the label kept moving forward with promotion given those setbacks.
― some dude, Friday, 2 May 2014 12:17 (eleven years ago)
i'm leaning towards 2 - "now" was released to retain rock radio support and not alienate too much of their fanbase before the album dropped, "still into you" was the stand out hit on the album (and "ain't it fun" owes quite a bit of its success to it laying the groundwork on pop radio) and "daydreaming" was merely a stopgap while they sorted out the video they wanted for "ain't it fun".
― prolego, Friday, 2 May 2014 12:22 (eleven years ago)

― prolego, Friday, 2 May 2014 12:28 (eleven years ago)
yeah it's smart that they're just focusing on pop radio, it almost seemed perfunctory and half-hearted for them to keep releasing singles like "Now" and "Monster" after rock radio seemed over them. at the same time, it's kinda silly that rock radio turns their nose up at stuff like "Still Into You," given that most of alt-rock radio is pretty shamelessly glossy and poppy right now and they were fine with playing Fall Out Boy's lead single.
― some dude, Friday, 2 May 2014 12:38 (eleven years ago)

― some dude, Friday, 2 May 2014 14:04 (eleven years ago)
"Still Into You" took so long to take off that they realized they'd be better served letting "Aint It Fun" have its moment in early-mid 2014 and it worked. The song has started taking off right in time for it to become an early summer hit. This'll probably land somewhere in the top 10 by next week or the week after.

the funny thing about that post is that it doesn't even mention that it's not just the vaguely similar cover art but that Bieber's song is called "We Were Born For This" and the Paramore album his cover resembles has a song called "Born For This" (with the refrain "we were born for this").

now that i've kinda gotten used to the abridged pre-chorus, what really bums me out about the single mix is that they throw the lead guitar line over the first chorus, i always loved on the album version how the first chorus let that melody just ring out on the dinky xylophone keyboard sound
― some dude, Sunday, 4 May 2014 01:18 (eleven years ago)
i only just noticed that when listening to the album again yesterday and now it's gonna bug me forever (or until it's not on the radio anymore)

Someone should send this song back in time to 1989 to play over the end credits of some awesome movie.
Love Urban, J. Lo and Harry just dancing away in place. If they stop moving, do they get a shock?

It's okay and his singing is good, but mostly it just reminded me to upload some Pinback to my ipod.
― how's life, Tuesday, 3 June 2014 09:31 (eleven years ago)
yeah it's not highly original or anything. but I always liked his drumming a lot, good to hear him do something that kinda goes against the conventional wisdom that the Farros left to go make 'real punk' or w/e.

I heard 'Ain't in Fun' in a strip club and it's become my song of the early summer

I heard 'Ain't in Fun' in a strip club
This is a very meta and perhaps even depressing song to play in a strip club

― r|t|c, Wednesday, 11 June 2014 23:24 (ten years ago)
xp yeah, 'You're not the big fish in the pond no more. You are what they're feeding on' is a bit much for a strip club
― Sufjan Grafton, Wednesday, 11 June 2014 23:30 (ten years ago)
this band has some fuckin' longevity. seems like they are weathering vicissitudes better than, say, Fall Out Boy, the leading lights of the mid 00s pop-punk scene? or do I have this wrong as I am a dabbler?
― veronica moser, Thursday, 26 June 2014 00:53 (ten years ago)
and "Ain't It Fun" hasn't dropped out of the top thirty.
― guess that bundt gettin eaten (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 26 June 2014 00:57 (ten years ago)
last Fall Out Boy album debuted at #1 the same month as the Paramore album (and has sold slightly more overall, although Paramore had the biggest single of either album), FOB has been around longer and is closing the shows on their current joint tour so...pretty close to a draw but FOB has the edge.
― some dude, Thursday, 26 June 2014 01:08 (ten years ago)
Correct me if I'm wrong but I feel like Paramore are bigger internationally.
― abcfsk, Thursday, 26 June 2014 07:38 (ten years ago)
Paramore are headlining Reading festival this year...Fall Out Boy were 2nd on the bill before Linkin Park at Download a few weeks back... so I'd maybe say Paramore have the edge in the UK right now

Trapt OFFICIAL16 hrs · Edited ·The fact that Paramore won an award for Best Rock Song and Beck won for Best Rock Album shows you that there's gotta be a conspiracy going around to destroy the essence of what rock music is all about. The establishment doesn't want anything too threatening or in your face to rile you up, they just want you to nod to adult pop punk;) or indie folk electronica and think it's "rock."

Jeremy Davis is out. I'll be honest - my first thought was "more motivation and inspiration for new material". In a way I can't wait to see what sort of creative sparks fly in the aftermath... but anyway, he was not central to the songwriting, that's Williams and York.
― abcfsk, Tuesday, 15 December 2015 17:39 (nine years ago)
^ Even better:
Paramore and former bassist Jeremy Davis are locked in a legal dispute over whether Davis was an employee for the Nashville pop-rock band or a partner in the underlying business entitled to a share of royalties and touring revenue.
Varoom Whoa, the business entity that operates Paramore, preemptively sued Davis in Nashville Chancery Court in February. According to the lawsuit, Varoom Whoa is fully owned by frontwoman Hayley Williams.
Williams is the one signed to a record contract with Atlantic Records, and she pays her band members as employees.

also, the Harris campaign should figure out how to use that track for that coveted youth vote.
