the positively glowing synths that at first mildly decorate and then outright overtake "grow up" my god

i mean i don't know much about what counts for "good sound" on rock records really but i think this is the best sounding rock record i've heard in years. every element is super crisp.

the only referents i have for "ain't it fun" are prince and paula abdul (which, aaaaaaahhhhh), pls advise

First thoughts after a few listens:

1. This is good.
2. Tacky as it was, I kind of miss the canned heaviness of their previous records
3. That being said, they actually sort of sound like a band now, not a bunch of studio effects
4. Some of the shouty/glockenspiely punky songs have an early Los Campesinos! quality to them
5. The acoustic-y Taylor Swift interludes are tacky
6. "Crazy Girls" is an impressive song, right down to the Weezer-y guitar solo

Overall, a much more varied album than I expected from Paramore that still scratches my itch for a Paramore-style record. Not bad.

That being said, they actually sort of sound like a band now, not a bunch of studio effects

eh, one of the things i liked about their original configuration was how they sounded as a band, especially on brand new eyes—farro was an awesome drummer, etc. but i agree despite being kind of an incomplete band they achieve that same sort of chemistry

Me too. It's meaty album that still works as fun, dumb summer entertainment. I can't ask for anything more.

I think what I love about Paramore is that the emotional impact of each song seems so finely calibrated (though instinctively so), like they can unleash heaviness without smothering you, the emotions feel human-sized and relatable.

"Still Into You" is so good at what it does -- appropriate criticism on a day when we honor Roger Ebert.

Yeah, I found I'm wasn't so enthusiastic about this first listen. Reminded of No Doubt at times in not a good way.

I want to clarify that by stating that Brand New Eyes is still a regular go to album for me. Love it more and more over time.

Evan R is otm as far as my first impressions of this album goes - I wanted some tunes with that 'canned heaviness' and the super sharp sound they had. Love BNE.. admittedly I did expect a departure since they specifically talked about some of my favorite songs as types this wouldn't include.

Getting over that there's a lot of enjoy and they still sound like Paramore frequently. Take away the interludes and I can't find too many weakness, really. It's good. Wouldn't mind if Hayley got a bit angry again for their next release, tho.

There's some truth to this. Also think it's her phrasing, too. She falls back on the same phrasing a lot, which can make even dissimilar songs bleed together

Brand New Eyes is still my favorite, but the more time I spend with this one I'm glad it's not a straight reduxe. That album was so tight and focused, but I'm enjoying how loose and leisurely this one is.

i was really disappointed with brand new eyes at the time bc after how sharp and individual "ignorance" sounded the rest seemed kind of uniform and dull

got over that eventually, but that's definitely not an issue with this record

I wonder if at least one point of distinction is that Lindsay, Ashlee etc. are stars - both in the literal sense of being celebrities but also in that their music is organised around their personalities which the songs present as exceptional, or at least exemplary - they feel the pain that we feel, but they feel it more intensely than we do, they feel it for us.

Whereas I feel with Hayley it's like, she kinda only exists as the personality of the song, I take away no particular interest in her as a fully functioning coherent identity distinct from what she brings to each song. And yet she fills each song completely and perfectly.

i really have no idea of ashlee as a celebrity, when i first heard her all i knew was that she was the sister of another pop star i didn't care about much. still don't, really.

The lyrics may be better on this album but BNE was so.. interesting. The way it was pitched as a 'we're over our troubles' album but the lyrics were clearly full of anger and spite and conflict, which turned out to reflect the mood of the band. Add what dlh mentions about added conflict with her faith and you end up with an album where I was constantly listening to the lyrics when ipodding the album on my way to work.

there are lots of pop songs about seduction or breakups but songs about blissful uncomplicated love, new or old or otherwise seem slightly less present these days? maybe i'm being crazy. anyway other than this track and some taylor stuff and the delightful new ariana grande froth that flips a big pun sample i can't think of many recent happy love songs. cher lloyd had a few last year or the year before? mindless behaviour and one direction maybe? but boybands still seem walled off from the pop mainstream in north america in ways that paramore no longer do?

anyway, this is great this album is great, the back half has opened up to me 'Proof' is wonderful, even the ballads are evoking feelings from me. wonderful stuff.

Just bought two songs from this because I've been trying to cut back on music purchases this year and there were a few new releases that I wanted to dig into. I feel like I'm going to havev to go back for the rest though when my paycheck comes in. Getting the feeling this may be the wrong year to quit buying music.

While the 80s influences are obvious and present on Ain't It Fun, the timing makes me think that someone heard Haim last year and got an idea.

i like this album bunches. in addition to blissful uncomplicated love there is blissful complicated faith (proof) and turbulent complicated love (crazy girls) and i think she has lots of presence on the ukelele goofs and as far as chiming ballads go i'm pretty into "daydreaming", if less into the one that's a sequel to whichever riot! song that was.

i guess daydreaming gets pretty fast lol i always get this wrong

well, they're short 'solo' sounding tracks amid an album where every other track is a big lavish production of a full length song, and also seem to be kind of thematically linked, so it makes sense that they were labeled that way.

OK, just finished this. On my ride in this morning, I got all wrapped up in the interludes, so when the buys dropped me off, I was listening to the beginning of Future, which reminded me a little ofv the mountain goats in terms of melody and phrasing. And I thought that was a great way to end the album, especially as I stepped or into the light spring rain down here in DC. But uh, I just picked up where I left off and what an ace fuckin coda! That threw me off a little. Have they ever taken it in that direction on any of their earlier releases? I was really only familiar with a few if their singles before this.

Absolutely. When the band split I was geeky enough to look at the credits and see which tracks departed Farro was NOT involved in writing, hoping they'd keep up the quality after the bros left, and All I Wanted was one of them (Hayley+York).

What do you listen to for inspiration?

I usually like a lot of older music. If I’m listening to a new hit band, it’s because of Taylor. I’m not really a Pitchfork [the music Web site] sort of gal. I was listening to the Shirelles and the Angels, who are my favorites, and even Blondie and the Ramones and that period of punk rock. They were writing pop songs, but they were played by punk bands. Every day in the car it was like, why can’t I play “Heart of Glass”? We finally wrote a song called “Daydreaming,” which is a total rip of “Dreaming” by Blondie, because I couldn’t think of a better title.

ken andrews of failure mixed the record. he's done an excellent job but it's also cool considering york's enthusiasm for the band. justin meldal-johnsen produced this record and is also in andrews' "digital noise academy" project.

Something that strikes me as very notable about both "Still Into You" and "Proof" is how they express uncomplicated joy in a relationship from a position of strength and independence (literally in the case of "Proof": "baby, if I'm half the man I say I am...") without coming across as hamfisted in the process.

In the first verse of "I'm Not One Of Those Crazy Girls", the way Hayley's voice is deliberately honeyed but you can hear some of the crazed disbelief sneak through when she sings "what do you mean I've got it backwards?" before the suffocating sweetness reasserts itself.

I've only been all the way through the album a few times, but my initial reaction is that this is just what I want from an American rock band in 2013. And I'm surprised, because I had listened to past Paramore stuff and was always bored. But obv they're a different band now.

Yeah, I've been listening to this a ton. It's a magnificent record. I've also gone back and listened to all the scattered older paramore tracks that I have and everything I've heard has been pretty unremarkable, barring misery business.

For the record (I had to go look them up) those other songs were Brick By Boring Brick, The Only Exception, and Decode.

"crushcrushcrush" is a favorite of mine. And "That's What You Get" has a magnificent riff/chorus clash.

Riot is a pretty great album, but Paramore is definitely better.

I like all of Brand New Eyes but especially:

- both choruses in "Ignorance"
- "I FEEL NO SYMPATHY"
- "I've got a feeling if I sang this loud enough, you would sing it back to me"
- every bit of "Misguided Ghosts"

Brand New Eyes is cool but so totally the weak link of the three

nah the first record is extremely indistinct toward the end. riot is pretty uneven too. should be also noted that hayley's kind of an awful lyricist until brand new eyes

I'm still trying, the No Doubt thing was the lead single. Best Coast on the interludes. Was also thinking of Karen O moments and Blondie so it was interested to see Haley namecheck them in interviews. There is a lot more stylistic variety than previous Paramore records, I guess I'm still getting accustomed to it.

This is another case where I simply can't get with people dissing her vocals, she sounds so ridiculously expressive in this really intuitive mind-to-mind sense, like I feel exactly what she's feeling as she delivers each line.

I love her voice and her delivery, always have. She knows how to command a stage as well.

it's really hard for me to imagine liking another record in 2013 more than this. "crazy girls" is kinda fascinating - thematically it's really the only thing besides "misery business" that they've done that posits that she might be an unreliable (or at least unlikable) narrator, which is a hell of a plot twist imo

I've always gotten the unreliable narrator vibe from her; almost half of her songs are blunt about the fact they're written through scorn lenses. That she's so upfront about it (and has an apparent sense of humor about it) is what makes the band so fun to me, and I'm glad she hasn't abandoned that even though this is her "growing up" album

The only date they have in the Netherlands is a festival called Pink Pop. The line up includes Green Day, Thirty Seconds to Mars, Kings of Leon and Fun. Even I have my limits.

I saw them at the Warped Tour a few years ago and it really wasn't that great. (Being an adult at the Warped Tour probably had something to do with that, of course, but the performance was kinda one-note.)

i saw them at a festival a year after Riot came out and i was right up by the stage, it was awesome!

i mean i'm pretty sure the best performances in Warped Tour history could prob be described as "one note"

was slightly disappointed when i found out after looping this album for a couple of months that the line in "(one of those) crazy girls" wasn't "i'm gonna go to your cousin just so i can smell your skin" but rather "go to your closet". i know in hindsight that didn't really make much sense but i quite liked the image of psycho-haley hunting down all this dude's blood relations to sniff out a close genetic match.

I think I sort of hate "Still Into You." The perkiness just cuts through me. Rest of the album is gold though.

saw the video early Sat morning for the first time; perfect cure for a quasi hangover.

If anything I feel that they tend to slightly overplay the "fun" angle in the video / live performances I've seen. Of course it is fun, but what I love about the song is that it's equal parts unwavering unaffected intensity, she really really is still into you.

It's currently top 20 on itunes and and getting most of it's radio play from pop radio right now. Don't know why the sudden take off though. Video came out over a month ago, right? They performed it at the Teen Choice Awards this past Sunday and on Conan on Monday, but it was rising on the charts even before that.

In the middle of a major world tour, aggressive social media presence, and word of mouth from people who have been listening to it for a while and telling people that they haven't put it down.

"Be Alone" is my latest song that I've finally picked up on from this record. A quintessential "second-to-last song on an emo album" kinda song.

Like, a sort of positive, melancholy, nostalgic thing before the closing statement. The pairing I'm thinking of is "So Strange I Remember You" and "The Beltsville Crucible" from Illusion of Safety.

"Still Into You" is very crucial to me like Beyonce's "Countdown" was, just capturing how it feels to maintain the elation of new love over years and years and never give up on it

the greatest thing about the handclaps is that they make the whole rhythm revolve on this slightly unusual axis, that almost makes it resemble a 7/8 beat even though the whole thing's in 4/4.

i feel like it is going to take a while for "ain't it fun" to make its way to american radio given that "still into you" took forever and has still not run its course... so hopefully the zedd song will not cannibalize it. granted, "clarity" took quite a long time to build on radio as well, so i guess we'll see.

actually obtained this whole album and listened to the whole thing -- v rare thing for me, i listen to like 3 full albums at most in a given year. it is so good so far! after 2 listens. literally only heard SIY and anklebiters before. in love with ain't it fun, HTSYHB, grow up. cannot believe "now" was the first single, maybe the worst song on the album and such a buzzkill as track 2. i'm a fan of the interludes cause i'm just 100% pro-hayley rn and you can tell how much she wanted to do them.

"Now" is good in context of the album but i feel like they've been self-consciously trying to retain rock radio support that has never really been there for them since "Misery Business" anyway -- "Ignorance" as the lead single for the last one kinda the same deal.

Literally the only time I heard "Still Into You" on the radio was when I was on vacation in New Mexico in May. And I heard it multiple times. As I recall, it was one of those truly cross-genre Top 40 stations that are in short supply in most urban markets.

every song bleeding together and it just recedes to become pleasant background music so so easily for me, i have to really concentrate to pay attention and i can't sustain it. if i pay attention to one song at a time it works a lot better, esp on the stronger ones like "ain't it fun", but really not as an album. i really don't hear much personality in her voice at all. sad about that

If you struggle finding out what the songs are about, what she is about, why she feels the way she does, I suggest checking out the band's "brand new eyes" record for reference - it's a lot more emo or 'genre' though so whether you like the music or not depends, I dig all the precice riffs and machine gun drums maybe even more than what's on the s/t.

It was a weird record thematically - originally pitched as "we had a fight and got over with" release but the songs were obviously soaked in bitterness, personal conflict, doubt (friendships, religion etc) and anger - really quite stirring stuff. Turned out the members were still screaming in frustration inside. Then two members ditched the gig and now THIS album is that triumphant, joyful thing. Together the two albums make for an interesting narrative. She's better at lyrics now than then but there were def more raw emotions on their previous album.

Seems like a lot of the reason Lex isn't clicking with this in general is the emo remnants, which I guess I a pretty understandable deal breaker. What scans as "emotion" for some listeners scans as absolutely nothing to others

but i think that's one of the main points of interest about the band, is the tension between hayley's really impressive voice and her more hardcore instincts

are Paramore's roots really hardcore, though? even All We Know Is Falling was pretty slick and melodic.

i get that idea from how most pop-punk/emo musicians i've encountered were at one point or another hardcore kids, it's possible for paramore it was inherited in a more secondhand way

but there's like a refused reference on their second album so i'm sticking with my idea

Nah the gospel choir sounds like it's still in there, just less of it and no "Don't Go Cryin" asides.

But yeah I'm not sure I like it as much as the album version that I'm so used to.

i was reading a recent issue of Tape Op where they interviewed Justin Meldal-Johnsen while he was working on this album... didn't shed a ton of light on the recording process but it was pretty interesting to get his background and how he ended up working with them and other acts.

They've been playing the hell out of "Ain't It Fun," which is great, because I don't think I've ever heard Paramore before and it's really good (at least on the radio), and if this is the fourth (!) single I look forward to exploring what else the album has to offer. At the least, I'm happy to pass it down to my daughter.

first time listening to the album after rinsing out still into you since last year. i must say it's a solid 8. never thought this was possible from freakin paramore. i remember getting annoyed every time my lil sis played misery businees or something years ago.

That's actually my current favorite. One of those "secret heart of the album" things.

xpost I really don't know how this stuff works, but when the fourth single from a year-old album is the biggest hit, does that mean that:

1) The band/label didn't think that was the best bet for a hit, and have been taken by surprise?
2) The band/label had a hunch it could be a big hit, but knew it needed to prime the pump with three other singles first?
3) The band/label just threw it out as an afterthought and neither had any idea it had hit potential?

Sort of reminds me of Def Leppard's "Hysteria," where "Pour Some Sugar" was the belated crossover big-hit fourth single.

"Ain't It Fun" had been very clearly earmarked as a universal favorite and likely next single since pretty much the release of the album. in fact, they shot a video for the song back in August, 4 months after the album release. then 2 things happened: a) they didn't like the video, and decided to scrap it, and do a video for a UK single release of "Daydreaming" before redoing "Ain't It Fun," and b) "Still Into You" finally became a radio hit, almost 6 months after its initial release, and they let that run its course before launching "Ain't It Fun" with a new video in early 2014. 8 months is a really unusual gap between the release of 2 singles from the same album -- 3 months is the standard, 6 months if it's a really big song -- so it's pretty awesome that the label kept moving forward with promotion given those setbacks.

i'm leaning towards 2 - "now" was released to retain rock radio support and not alienate too much of their fanbase before the album dropped, "still into you" was the stand out hit on the album (and "ain't it fun" owes quite a bit of its success to it laying the groundwork on pop radio) and "daydreaming" was merely a stopgap while they sorted out the video they wanted for "ain't it fun".

also it's peaking perfectly in time for graduations

yeah it's smart that they're just focusing on pop radio, it almost seemed perfunctory and half-hearted for them to keep releasing singles like "Now" and "Monster" after rock radio seemed over them. at the same time, it's kinda silly that rock radio turns their nose up at stuff like "Still Into You," given that most of alt-rock radio is pretty shamelessly glossy and poppy right now and they were fine with playing Fall Out Boy's lead single.

"Now" is a fine track imo, just not a super inspiring into to the project

"Still Into You" took so long to take off that they realized they'd be better served letting "Aint It Fun" have its moment in early-mid 2014 and it worked. The song has started taking off right in time for it to become an early summer hit. This'll probably land somewhere in the top 10 by next week or the week after.

the funny thing about that post is that it doesn't even mention that it's not just the vaguely similar cover art but that Bieber's song is called "We Were Born For This" and the Paramore album his cover resembles has a song called "Born For This" (with the refrain "we were born for this").

now that i've kinda gotten used to the abridged pre-chorus, what really bums me out about the single mix is that they throw the lead guitar line over the first chorus, i always loved on the album version how the first chorus let that melody just ring out on the dinky xylophone keyboard sound

last Fall Out Boy album debuted at #1 the same month as the Paramore album (and has sold slightly more overall, although Paramore had the biggest single of either album), FOB has been around longer and is closing the shows on their current joint tour so...pretty close to a draw but FOB has the edge.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I feel like Paramore are bigger internationally.

Paramore are headlining Reading festival this year...Fall Out Boy were 2nd on the bill before Linkin Park at Download a few weeks back... so I'd maybe say Paramore have the edge in the UK right now

The fact that Paramore won an award for Best Rock Song and Beck won for Best Rock Album shows you that there's gotta be a conspiracy going around to destroy the essence of what rock music is all about. The establishment doesn't want anything too threatening or in your face to rile you up, they just want you to nod to adult pop punk;) or indie folk electronica and think it's "rock."

Jeremy Davis is out. I'll be honest - my first thought was "more motivation and inspiration for new material". In a way I can't wait to see what sort of creative sparks fly in the aftermath... but anyway, he was not central to the songwriting, that's Williams and York.

Somethings just, somethings just make sense and one of those is that this is the best album ever

was on a 6+ hour car ride with my kids and my 7-year old kept requesting "Now". then we were cleaning up after dinner and i could hear her softly singing it to herself!

also, the Harris campaign should figure out how to use that track for that coveted youth vote.
