One of ILM's most loved bands.
I'm asking for your Top 40 New Order songs.
Ballot part one (mandatory): Your Top 40 New Order tracks. Usual scoring method (1:50, 2:46, 3:43, 4:40…) will be applied. Please order your list with your #1 at the top and your #40 at the bottom. No need to number them but remember one on top. You can vote for less songs if you would like with your number one still getting the 50 points.
Ballot part two (optional): Your Top New Order albums. If you only want to list the first five then that is fine or you can list all nine of them.
Ballot part three (optional): Your Top 5 New Order videos.
Send ballots to neworderpoll AT gmail dot com. please include your ILM user name.
Deadline for voting will be May 26, 2013 Pacific Time.

― Bee OK, Friday, 17 May 2013 02:10 (twelve years ago)
i hope 10 days is not too long, it seems about normal?
― Bee OK, Friday, 17 May 2013 02:35 (twelve years ago)
it's good. it will take a while to figure out exactly how i want to rank 40 songs, which is a lot.
― Treeship, Friday, 17 May 2013 02:36 (twelve years ago)
Looking forward to this one. Probably my favourite and most listened to band ever. 40 songs shouldn't be a problem at all, think the videos might be the hardest part of this poll.
― Kitchen Person, Friday, 17 May 2013 02:40 (twelve years ago)
i have been listening to a lot of New Order lately for my ballot. one song i had forgotten about is "Sunrise" so much power.

The album tracks from this periods are terrific. Love the growly bass-y ones on the first side of Brotherhood ("Broken Promise," "Weirdo").
― A deeper shade of lol (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 17 May 2013 21:23 (twelve years ago)
haha I was originally thinking "40? good god that's a lot" but it seems I won't have to resort to voting for "World In Motion" after all
― AMERICA IS ABOUT RESSLING (DJP), Friday, 17 May 2013 21:37 (twelve years ago)
also want to make me semi-regular plea to ppl to reconsider/relisten to the later albums because they are actually really, really good; I sort of feel like New Order as a band didn't really know what to do with an album until Technique, with Movement being something of a fluke occurrence
― AMERICA IS ABOUT RESSLING (DJP), Friday, 17 May 2013 21:40 (twelve years ago)
That kind of writes off PCL, which I still think is their best, DJP
― Dr X O'Skeleton, Friday, 17 May 2013 22:17 (twelve years ago)
i still don't like the ranking. why are we all forced to rank the tracks? i'd prefer to name 40 tracks in alphabetic order with each track getting the same number of points.
― it's the distortion, stupid! (alex in mainhattan), Friday, 17 May 2013 22:21 (twelve years ago)

― 乒乓, Friday, 17 May 2013 22:50 (twelve years ago)
Ballot sent.
Quickly found I couldn't stretch my ballot to 40 tracks, and very proudly didn't vote for anything past Republic.

haven't decided yet, we can talk about it for a day or so and then make it official. i was leaning towards counting it as one song but then breaking it down in the post as to what mix was actually voted on.

right, and i guess dub edits will be counted w/ the proper single
― 乒乓, Saturday, 18 May 2013 00:17 (twelve years ago)
I have to confess that I like tons of New Order songs -- maybe enough to fill out a 40-song ballot -- but most of them I can't tell by name. I have to hear them and say, "Oh right, that one."

In the polls I've run, I've accepted ballots from people who want to just split the points evenly among all the tracks they vote for. It's no biggie, but I've never listed it as an option because it's not what I/we are generally going for.

I like the option of doing fourty — it won't be very hard for me to fill out that list.
And yes, 'Dream Attack' will be rather high on my ballot.
― Austin, Sunday, 19 May 2013 14:55 (twelve years ago)
Revisiting New Order, I'm always struck by how much of a guitar (and bass) band they were. I think of them as part of the whole synth-linndrum wave, and they were, but that was just part of the picture.
― something of an astrological coup (tipsy mothra), Sunday, 19 May 2013 16:20 (twelve years ago)

How will different versions of the same song be counted?
Temptation '82 vs. '87, 7-inch vs. 12-inch, etc.
― Millsner, Sunday, 19 May 2013 17:13 (twelve years ago)
I do think this is one of the most extraordinary pieces of music ever made. The bass sequencer always put me in mind of the musical spaceship at the end of Close Encounters; the melody is beautiful, insistent and mysterious; and then Martin Hannett added what sounds like a swarm of cyber insects descending at the close.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G9vY-rhes6o

Just working on my list. I made a playlist of my favourite songs, got it down to 45 songs now. I really don't want to leave any of these songs out.
Everyone Everywhere will be on my list. Actually surprised how many songs I love that came after Technique. On my playlist I have thirteen songs from the last three albums.
― Kitchen Person, Monday, 20 May 2013 02:02 (twelve years ago)
"Crystal" will certainly make mine.
― A deeper shade of lol (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 20 May 2013 02:05 (twelve years ago)
Yeah that will do well on mine.
I know a lot of people don't rate Republic that highly but I currently have five songs on my list from that album that I just don't want to cut.
Flicking through the last two albums I realised my favourite song is Waiting For The Siren's Call by quite a long way, really hope that has enough supporters to make it. The "How many times must I lose my way" bit is one of my favourite New Order moments.
The other big dilemma I'm having is if I'm going to include Blue Monday. It's hard to even rank that song against the others due to how many times I've heard it in my life. It's a great song but I barely ever play it put of choice anymore.
― Kitchen Person, Monday, 20 May 2013 02:13 (twelve years ago)
The post-(e)Electronic keyboards and muted Hooky bass are Republic's most crippling flaws. The tunes are ace.
― A deeper shade of lol (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 20 May 2013 02:17 (twelve years ago)
Happy to see people praising Movement. Always the dark horse from the catalogue - maligned by the band and critics alike - but I have always thought it a terrible special record. I can't think of another record that really sounds like this, but R.E.M.'s Murmur and Marianne Faithful's Broken English have a similar production feel... Very nocturnal-sounding.
I was discussing off-site the appeal of New Order's melodica songs. "Truth" ranks highly amongst my favourites.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ajtp7tPee1A
also "Hurt."
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FRu5CThEmcE
And "In A Lonely Place," "Turn The Heater On," "Your Silent Face," "Love Vigilantes," "Angel Dust" (listen during the guitar solo - more obvious in "Evil Dust"), "All The Way," "Run Wild," and possibly "Slow Jam" (sounds like it during the last 30 seconds or so). Can anyone spot more instances?
xpost - love "Waiting for the Sirens' Call."
― Kent Burt, Monday, 20 May 2013 02:17 (twelve years ago)
"Morning Night and Day" is my banger from that album.

― A deeper shade of lol (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn)
Yeah Hooky is barely on that album.
As for Siren's Call I think it loses it's way half way through. I can never really remember of the songs after I Told You So. Turn is the other song I think I'll end up voting for from that album, really surprised they didn't put that out as a single.
― Kitchen Person, Monday, 20 May 2013 02:41 (twelve years ago)
Dag, looking forward to this poll. May actually participate!
― Josh in Chicago, Monday, 20 May 2013 02:55 (twelve years ago)
By love "Waiting for the Sirens' Call" I meant the song... The album itself is OK, but loses steam midway as mentioned above.
Speaking of losing steam, I just listened to Republic for the first time in years. The first half sounds better than I remember, but the stretch of songs between "Young Offender" and "Avalanche" really draaaaags, though I like those two tracks themselves.
What I really love about early New Order is it seems like the songs are built around Steve's drums. This seems less apparent after PC&L.
― Kent Burt, Monday, 20 May 2013 03:25 (twelve years ago)
I really like Special from the second half of Republic, the strings at the end are a bit of an obvious Unfinished Sympathy rip off but it's a great tune.
― Kitchen Person, Monday, 20 May 2013 03:30 (twelve years ago)
this discography even has videos:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Order_discography
― Bee OK, Monday, 20 May 2013 03:38 (twelve years ago)
I relistened to PC&L at the weekend and the drumming really stood out, 'Age of Consent' in particular.
I'm a casual New Order fan compared to many but shortlisting my favourite tracks gave me 40-odd songs to work with.
― Gavin, Leeds, Monday, 20 May 2013 09:10 (twelve years ago)
Somehow I just realized that for a band that's been active (for the most part) for 30+ years, they don't have a very large catalogue.
― NoTimeBeforeTime, Monday, 20 May 2013 10:39 (twelve years ago)
5 albums in the 80s (plus Substance) then 3 since 1990 means their discography is a bit lopsided on that score.
― Neil S, Monday, 20 May 2013 10:41 (twelve years ago)
Five albums in the 80's but they all have just eight or nine songs on them.
― NoTimeBeforeTime, Monday, 20 May 2013 10:48 (twelve years ago)
my favourite band ages 13-16, formative experience etc. has been fun going back to songs i haven't listened to in 15+ years, early singles & first two albums still sound amazing, then things get v sporadic.vote Procession/Everything's Gone Green!
― ( X '____' )/ (zappi), Monday, 20 May 2013 11:37 (twelve years ago)
Yeh, Procession is a bit overlooked, coming between Ceremony and Blue Monday. I love the way a pop song suddenly bursts out of that wonky keyboard wash, and Steve does those crisp snare rolls at the end.

I thought the New Order poll thread would be very, very busy here on ILM.
― kraudive, Monday, 20 May 2013 21:44 (twelve years ago)
i got my 40 unranked songs together, there is one album i took every song of. besides that i think i enjoyed relistening to sonic youth more than relistening to new order. there were hardly any surprises here whereas i had forgotten about quite a lot of sonic youth stuff.
― it's the distortion, stupid! (alex in mainhattan), Monday, 20 May 2013 21:48 (twelve years ago)
Ballot sent, and I greatly enjoyed listening to some of the newer albums that I hadn't given much attention to. As for the old stuff, it's never off my playlist.
― Dr X O'Skeleton, Monday, 20 May 2013 22:18 (twelve years ago)
I'll vote because it's easy but I don't have much to say; we talk about this band a lot
the only struggle is figuring out how to find 40 songs to rank over "Blue Monday" because fuck that; or should I say, I will rock the shack
― Euler, Monday, 20 May 2013 22:21 (twelve years ago)
Yeah it feels like people do obviously love this band but a lot of it has been covered on the many threads about them.
― Kitchen Person, Monday, 20 May 2013 22:23 (twelve years ago)
Don't worry too much about 'poll fatigue', when I did the Fall one, about half the entries arrived on the final weekend
― Mark G, Monday, 20 May 2013 22:32 (twelve years ago)
I was totally planning to use this poll as an excuse to revisit the entire New Order discography in chronological order. However, my experience revisiting Movement was waaaaaay different than it was the better part of a decade ago. Always struck me as tentative juvenalia, but now the weird crossbreed of JD and NO elements was too interesting and unique to dismiss. If I stuck to a ballot of stuff that didn't require reassessment it'd basically be hits plus a bunch of Low-Life and Brotherhood, so I think I'm gonna sit this one out (my faves are sure to place high anyway) and use it as a tool for when I do reinvestigate the whole magilla

― Bee OK, Tuesday, 21 May 2013 02:01 (twelve years ago)
Think I have my list ready. The hardest part was deciding which album tracks I'd have from Low-Life and Power Corruption & Lies. All the other albums I knew exactly which songs would be on my list but these two are such solid albums I found it hard to pick out individual songs for some reason. My albums list was easy, now I've just got to figure out which videos to go for.
― Kitchen Person, Tuesday, 21 May 2013 02:03 (twelve years ago)
btw, i have received some unranked ballots. if you don't want to rank them that is OK as well, just tell me they are unranked.
― Bee OK, Tuesday, 21 May 2013 02:30 (twelve years ago)
Voted! Just realised I numbered my choices and it says not to at the top. Bee, let me know if you need to send it again without the numbers.
― Kitchen Person, Tuesday, 21 May 2013 03:26 (twelve years ago)
3 since 1990 means their discography is a bit lopsided on that score.
Well, 4 now haha. Not even the poll was enough to get me to check out Lost Sirens yet.
Surprised I could come up with 40 tracks I like. I think of them as a band with very high highs and a lot of mediocre tracks, not to mention many short albums. But nothing on my ballot is mediocre (maaaaybe #40), and my top 5 tracks are all-time jams.
― Vinnie, Tuesday, 21 May 2013 03:35 (twelve years ago)

this is due on the 26th? new order is so great, but i def prefer the guitar side to the rubbery dance music side and i'm not ashamed to admit it. that's just how my instrument is tuned, i guess. anyway, i have no idea what ilx consensus is so i have to ask - age of consent is well liked, yes? (i hope the answer is yes)
like i need another assignment in life but hey, it shouldn't be that hard. i know my favorites as well as i know any songs i know.
― free your spirit pig (La Lechera), Tuesday, 21 May 2013 18:48 (twelve years ago)
actually, that's not true -- i like both sides of new order, i just have a preference for movement-era sound over technique-era soundbrotherhood is somewhere in the middle, low life is at the top.
i think demographic info is interesting with new order too-- i wasn't friends with a single girl in high school (89-93) who didn't like at least one new order song. i had a tshirt with a rainbow usa flag on it. i wore it to my cousin's graduation party. we lived in ohio, usa. that's basically what new order reminds me of: adolescence.
― free your spirit pig (La Lechera), Tuesday, 21 May 2013 19:09 (twelve years ago)
ha well my favorite NO albums are Movement and Technique so
― they are either militarists (ugh) or kangaroos (?) (DJP), Tuesday, 21 May 2013 19:14 (twelve years ago)
i don't know about ilm but i don't like age of consent at all. it is a stinking ballad. new order have so many great tunes but age of consent isn't one of them. that song goes absolutely nowhere. the singing is terrible as well. for me it belongs into the bottom 10% of the new order catalogue. but i am sure there are defenders...
― it's the distortion, stupid! (alex in mainhattan), Tuesday, 21 May 2013 19:15 (twelve years ago)
xp - i'm not arguing or saying what's best, just what i personally prefer -- it's pretty clear (to me at least) that my feelings about new order songs were decided when i was an intellectual and emotional tadpole.
haha! you don't really hate age of consent, do you? are you pulling my leg?!
― free your spirit pig (La Lechera), Tuesday, 21 May 2013 19:17 (twelve years ago)
I love "Age of Consent", & wtf at it being a ballad?
― Euler, Tuesday, 21 May 2013 19:22 (twelve years ago)
i've been listening to it and am unable to locate the ballad

"thieves like us" -- that could be a balladlove lovelovelovelove
― free your spirit pig (La Lechera), Tuesday, 21 May 2013 19:26 (twelve years ago)
xp see, i knew there would be lovers. i don't hate it but i'd rather never listen to it again. pcl isn't my fave album by them neither. for me a ballad is a song without a distinctive melody but with a kind of solemnity. not sure if that always nails it but in 90% of the cases it does, i reckon. thieves like us is great btw. it is a song with a great hook and lots of dancing potential. but maybe i am pretty off the money concerning ballads. am i?
― it's the distortion, stupid! (alex in mainhattan), Tuesday, 21 May 2013 19:34 (twelve years ago)
the problem is that the word "ballad" actually has a real definition and when you use it with your made up definition, no one will understand what you are talking about
― they are either militarists (ugh) or kangaroos (?) (DJP), Tuesday, 21 May 2013 19:37 (twelve years ago)
most things people call "ballads" aren't even ballads they're just slow love songs
― ḉrut (crüt), Tuesday, 21 May 2013 19:43 (twelve years ago)
i am a lover! and that song is not a ballad. i know what a ballad is.
― free your spirit pig (La Lechera), Tuesday, 21 May 2013 19:45 (twelve years ago)
Movement was the last album I got, sometime in fall '92 when it was reissued. I fell for "Senses" and "Dreams Never End" before the latter got overplayed in the mid nineties. I recoiled from the JD-isms while at the same time reveling in how well they replicated the sound. Now I think it's excellent in its own right – a sound captured at the moment of its decadence.
― A deeper shade of lol (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 21 May 2013 19:45 (twelve years ago)
I bought Movement in 1989 on cassette and remember vividly putting myself into a trance at journalism camp listening to "The Him" on my Walkman in a dorm room with no air conditioning

ok goodthat's more like it
― free your spirit pig (La Lechera), Tuesday, 21 May 2013 19:52 (twelve years ago)
definitely in my top 10. Like Blue Monday, its not a conventional song by anyone's yardstick, although I guess there's more of a hook. A song like True Faith would stand up on an acoustic guitar; you can't really separate Age of Consent from its instrumental components. That's one of the qualities that made NO unique.
― Dr X O'Skeleton, Tuesday, 21 May 2013 19:57 (twelve years ago)
I vehemently disagree about "Age of Consent" not being separable from its arrangement
― they are either militarists (ugh) or kangaroos (?) (DJP), Tuesday, 21 May 2013 19:59 (twelve years ago)
xp movement is such a weird album. it is made by a different band. in between joy div and new order. the same people as new order but still on the joy division trip. it is my favourite album by new order. there is not one weak song, it all falls into place. ian is hanging in his room and they just continue making music. i really admire them for having continued.

i totally agree what you wrote about true faith dr x, it is a song which can stand on its own, it can be played on acoustic guitar without losing its qualities. but additionally it is a new order song i love because it has a great hummable melody and deep inside it is very melancholic, especially when bernard sings it in his quite flat voice. like all great new order songs. blue monda like age of consent on the other side do nothing for me at all. to me they seem soulless dance robot numbers.

And fwiw: I don't, and never have, seen Joy Division and New Order as two different things. I think if you ignore the differences in singer/lyricist and play the Joy Division catalogue in order, followed by the New Order catalogue, there is a definite natural progression there. Movement of course sounds the way that it does because Martin Hannett was involved, as he had been for the two Joy Division albums, and of course Bernard Sumner (and Peter Hook) hadn't found their own vocal style yet, but listen to the backing tracks of Movement and I genuinely believe that this was the way that Joy Division were headed anyway musically. 'Love Will Tear Us Apart' and 'Ceremony' musically were far more lighter than anything on Closer, and they obviously followed this slighter lighter direction for the Movement tracks. I really do believe that if Joy Division followed up Closer, it would have been a musically (note: not necessarily lyrically), lighter record. And I don't think Power, Corruption & Lies was a clean break from Movement either... if 'Age Of Consent' had been produced and recorded by Hannett, it would have sounded like pretty much anything else they'd done with Hannett. Musically, they were the same as they ever were, just the rawness that they had is shown through because of the way that its produced. The keyboard hook to 'Age Of Consent' is quite blatantly written by the same person who wrote the hook to 'Love Will Tear Us Apart'... it's the same kind of melodic sense. So yeah, natural progression in my eyes and no clean break 'tween the two - at any point.

Well, yeah: Bernard Sumner wrote'em. He and the other two wrote the Joy Division music, so it'd make sense that Movement would sound like more of the same.

Well yes, it's a transitional album (most albums between a first album and a last album are), but I wouldn't say it was a different animal. That implies something radically different, and it's pretty clear from listening to the record who was involved in making it.

Lies! Technique is one of the five best albums ever released. What about Vanishing Point? Round & Round? Fine Time is probably my least favourite song on there just because it doesn't really fit with the other songs that well, on it's own it's still a 9/10 though.

'Age Of Consent' is what, two chords, a vocal melody and a keyboard hook? There's a lot you could do with those three elements.
― The Jupiter 8 (Turrican), Tuesday, 21 May 2013 22:21 (twelve years ago)

― Euler, Tuesday, 21 May 2013 22:22 (twelve years ago)
La Lechera mentioned above that she couldn't locate the ballad in 'Age Of Consent'... on a similar tack, I'm struggling to locate the logic and reasoning in much of what alex in mainhattan is posting here :/
― The Jupiter 8 (Turrican), Tuesday, 21 May 2013 22:30 (twelve years ago)
Fwiw, Technique is hands down my favourite New Order album... to me it's their absolute peak and their best beginning-to-end full length. Stacks up very well against any "classic album" you could possibly name, too, in my very humble opinion.
― The Jupiter 8 (Turrican), Tuesday, 21 May 2013 22:33 (twelve years ago)
Fine Time is probably my least favourite song on there just because it doesn't really fit with the other songs that well
"Fine Time" is awesome and they should have made an entire album of songs like that.
― NoTimeBeforeTime, Tuesday, 21 May 2013 22:33 (twelve years ago)
I think 'Fine Time' is a brilliant opening statement, tbh... maybe if it was placed in the middle of the album it would stick out like a sore thumb, but because it's at the beginning its not as noticeable, I think.
― The Jupiter 8 (Turrican), Tuesday, 21 May 2013 22:36 (twelve years ago)
was Technique always loved? Depends where you're from. When I discovered New Order in '91 it was immediately my favorite album, the likes of Rolling Stone championed Low Life, a consensus that stood for years. Meanwhile reading English mags in the early nineties the album was already canonized.

Technique and Low-Life both appeared in NME's best albums of all time list in 93. A few years later Melody Maker did an albums list that placed both those albums in similar positions. I always thought these were their two most popular albums but these days it feels like Power, Corruption & Lies has edged out Low-Life.

Substance is not an album. Singles is not an album. The Best of is not an album. 81/82 EP is the best single disc they've every released but it's not an album.
― brotherlovesdub, Tuesday, 21 May 2013 23:30 (twelve years ago)
I love the sound of Brotherhood, what Andrew Harrison in a '93 Select reassessment called "the bass of Hook, hungover" over something.
― A deeper shade of lol (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 21 May 2013 23:35 (twelve years ago)
Brotherhood is a good album but Low-Life and Technique are so perfect, it just doesn't compare. Along with Bizarre Love Triangle and All Day Long, Paradise is my other favourite on there. I do have a soft spot for Every Second Counts, more for the comedy value though.
― Kitchen Person, Tuesday, 21 May 2013 23:41 (twelve years ago)

Brotherhood really does work best on vinyl. The sides are sequenced well and the CDs all sound extra harsh to me. I've grown to love Brotherhood over the years but it still only placed 4th on my list.
― brotherlovesdub, Tuesday, 21 May 2013 23:46 (twelve years ago)
I voted for ten albums Substance and then the eight studio albums plus Lost Sirens (spoiler alert that was not at the higher end of my list) I just figured Bee could decide what was allowed to be included.
― Kitchen Person, Tuesday, 21 May 2013 23:52 (twelve years ago)
My New Order ballot will probably look like my Fall ballot: Little to nothing released after 1990. They just lost me after Technique. I tried to listen to Get Ready while working on my ballot and nothing is really sticking. Are there any standout tracks on the last three or so albums?

While I had heard Substance before, Technique was the first NO album I owned (after watching the video for Fine Time on 120 Minutes several times and was finally won over) and I was a huge Joy Division fan at the time!
― righteousmaelstrom, Wednesday, 22 May 2013 00:45 (twelve years ago)
new order have so many great tunes but age of consent isn't one of them. that song goes absolutely nowhere.
Wow, I feel sorry for you. That song takes me everywhere... A perfect blend of all of the elements that makes New Order a great band. Top 5 for sure.
another pointless exercise in programming
Programming takes actual talent - you don't just press a button and a machine spits out a song. Considering Stephen Morris wanted to sound like a drum machine, I'm not sure what it is exactly you get out of a band like New Order. Rockist nonsense.
This should automatically invalidate anyone's ballot.
And fwiw: I don't, and never have, seen Joy Division and New Order as two different things. I think if you ignore the differences in singer/lyricist and play the Joy Division catalogue in order, followed by the New Order catalogue, there is a definite natural progression there.

I thought Technique was their weakest album until I heard Republic. It's still not my favourite, but I like it more now. I really love "Love Less" and "All The Way" so some of the nasty talk above is not cool.
"Here To Stay" makes me think of how great New Order could be again with a production team with the group's best interest at heart. More work with the Chemical Brothers would be nice - or James Murphy.

there are certain newer NO songs that (I think?) have bad reputations that are incredibly fun to sing along with (esp. "Rock the Shack" and "Jetstream")
― they are either militarists (ugh) or kangaroos (?) (DJP), Thursday, 23 May 2013 14:53 (twelve years ago)
Haha "Jetstream" did not make my ballot, but dang it's a fun chorus to sing with someone else.
― Vinnie, Thursday, 23 May 2013 14:55 (twelve years ago)
some of my fondest early 2000s memories include dancing to "Crystal."
― A deeper shade of lol (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 23 May 2013 14:56 (twelve years ago)
ooh, that's a good one. i never went anywhere that it was played and dancing was appropriate. people are so boring!!
imo new order is great for dancing because you can attach to so many different parts of the song -- it also allows a variety of people to find something to grab ontothe lol depressive teen dance club i used to go in high school to would blow up when they played "true faith" and to this day i feel like the lyrics are floating on top of the music because i remember really ~feeling~ them one shitty friday night.
<3 dancing to new order!!!!

The singles from Republic are all pretty great (I even like Spooky in the album's sequence) but Everyone Everywhere and final three tracks (Times Change/Special/Avalanche) are also great. The whole album is drenched with that 90s flirtation with the end of days as party aesthetic that really works for me, Times Change particularly with it's menacing keyboard line and silly vocals. The videos really underscore this, too. Especially the Baywatch Regret one!
― the girl from spirea x (f. hazel), Thursday, 23 May 2013 15:32 (twelve years ago)
the "Times Change" oboe would be my favorite thing were it not for the existence of the "Some Distant Memory" oboe solo.
― A deeper shade of lol (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 23 May 2013 15:40 (twelve years ago)
Top three for dancing:1. Crystal (so hedonistic)2. Thieves Like Us (used to request this when I lived in Houston, it was good for dancing and drinking at the same time)3. Bizarre Love Triangle because everyone would mob the floor when it came on
― the girl from spirea x (f. hazel), Thursday, 23 May 2013 15:41 (twelve years ago)
possibly the most underappreciated New Order single is "Guilt Is A Useless Emotion"

what do we think of Lost Sirens? "Californian Grass" ain't bad.
― A deeper shade of lol (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 23 May 2013 17:02 (twelve years ago)
It didn't excite me like I expected it to. I've heard rumors they were in the studio with the Chemical Brothers again and Bernard must have a cache of work he did with Stuart Price, so i'm really hoping the stuff they're working on now is more electronic than their post Republic work.

What about the Bad Lieutenant album? Was anybody still paying attention at that point?
(I liked it, by the way)

it was a good album, much better than i thought it would have been. not sure if any tracks will make it into the Top 40 however.
Well, Bee, you've seen my ballot, so you already know which tracks I recommend and how fond I am of that album.
I think it's a really good one. Tack on 'Here to Stay' and you have one of their best.

My overpowering memory of "Someone Like You" is being out of my gourd in fall '02 in Chicago's Metro after a Sleater Kinney show, dancing with a lovely boy I picked up just before a busload of Koreans invaded the club.
― A deeper shade of lol (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 24 May 2013 02:48 (twelve years ago)
How could you name Slow Jam, very easily the worst song in the New Order catalog, and not mention Primitive Notion, one of the best songs they've ever done.

What about Run Wild? That's always been one of my favourites on that album. Vicious Streak is one I don't think I rated that much at the time but love it now.
― Kitchen Person, Friday, 24 May 2013 02:59 (twelve years ago)
Run Wild is good but the alternate mix by Steve Osborne is better than the version on the album.
― brotherlovesdub, Friday, 24 May 2013 03:15 (twelve years ago)
Primitive Notion, one of the best songs they've ever done.
Yes.
Seriously, anybody who loves Joy Division and not New Order (or vice versa) is made a fool by that song.
On the other hand, I sometimes feel like I'm the only person who hates 'Run Wild' with a passion.

― The Jupiter 8 (Turrican), Friday, 24 May 2013 11:24 (twelve years ago)
I'm glad we got to vote for 40 - Regret is the only post-80s song in my top 20 but I had room to get into the later stuff further down the ballot. The title track of Waiting for the Sirens' Call is their best reunion song imo.
― Deafening silence (DL), Friday, 24 May 2013 11:45 (twelve years ago)
The title track of Waiting for the Sirens' Call is their best reunion song imo.
― Deafening silence (DL)
I agree with this. I was kind of surprised how high I ended up putting it on my list but it's one of their most moving songs.

1963 is high on my ballot, mostly for the '95 version on the Best Of. I didn't vote specifically for any remixes, but I think it blows the original out of the water.

I still vividly remember being in London as a teenager and finding out Substance there was a 2 cassette deal with all of the b-sides on it and how overjoyed I was to discover all of those songs
― they are either militarists (ugh) or kangaroos (?) (DJP), Friday, 24 May 2013 14:47 (twelve years ago)
i bought a used cassette of the hits part of Substance in middle school and had no idea there was a 2nd disc for years
― da croupier, Friday, 24 May 2013 14:48 (twelve years ago)
Substance on double vinyl was one of the first records I bought when I went to university 17 years ago, for the princely sum of £3. I still play it now.
― Neil S, Friday, 24 May 2013 14:58 (twelve years ago)
My brother had/has the double CD, which I borrowed off him to tape the b-sides.
― Neil S, Friday, 24 May 2013 14:59 (twelve years ago)
I can blame The Cure, New Order, Prince and Pet Shop Boys for causing me to gravitate towards bands' b-sides when I start really following them

― piscesx, Friday, 24 May 2013 22:13 (twelve years ago)
One of the things that put me off about NO initially but I now love about them is the extent to which productions like "Face Up" have this glossy futurism as well as a flimsy, low budget quality -- often within the same song. When I hear Movement (which I am really liking), it makes me think that a big piece of the reason for that dynamic is their roots in Martin Hannett's thin, clangy productions, which a record like Low Life builds on with drum machines and synths that sound like they'd never even plugged in until the engineer pushed record in the studio.
Btw, where is Dan Selzer in this poll? I almost can't imagine ILM polling NO without him.

Asking for help
Need someone's help to help with the art-work.
I was planing on running this poll during US hours from Tuesday thru Friday, since Monday is a holiday.
Now things have changed. Need to give the Doors some room, also work is going to get in the way a bit.
I'm going to start rolling out the poll Wednesday night but don't have enough time to make the picture's fun.
Asking for help: Would someone who has some time like to take over the picture aspect of this poll. Whatever you want to do i'll post with the results of the tracks poll.

As I've been thinking abt NO it strikes me how arbitrary my line is for lyrics that are too trite/corny/bad. Love Less is ok/Every Little Counts is not ok.

Yeah!! Ballot sent!! I just couldn't rank the 40 songs. Dreams Never End is my #1 followed by 1963 and Dream Attack. After that it would have taken me forever to rank the rest. Could I put Leave Me Alone before Sunrise? Where's Weirdo place? Temptation vs Touched by the Hand of God? Sleeper track is Mr. Disco. Hope it places high!! Most New Order video by long shot - Round and Round.

i am digging that album. just listening to it on spotify. there is nothing brilliant like eg bizarre love triangle of course but even the leftovers of their last album are pretty solid and mostly quite lovely. are they ever going to reform? hooky doing joy division and early new order albums live is really sad, recycling and reviving the past, what a waste of time.

I must be the only one who thinks "Hooky had a point" and that he's O.K. Really.
