I purchased this LP this weekend at the local record store and I was wondering if any of the folks on this site had heard it or even purchased it. Could you please post your opinion about the album? Reactions? Like/ Dislike, etc....

bobby, Monday, 7 October 2002 04:23 (twenty-three years ago)

i think shes great!

simon trife (simon_tr), Monday, 7 October 2002 04:26 (twenty-three years ago)

I saw her on David Letterman. Even though Avril doesn't look like a genuine anything, the guys on bass and guitar could pass for actual pop punkers. what sorry bitches. how do they sleep.

Aaron A., Monday, 7 October 2002 04:32 (twenty-three years ago)

Good stuff. I'm still surprised at just how much I like it, since at first it just fell into the category of "well, when MTV plays this I won't change the channel, I'll chill and wait to see what the next video is." But it grew on me, and it's a solid album. Juvenile and adolescent? Sure. But give me a dozen juvenile and adolescent Avril Lavignes, who are at least in their teens and have some claim to juvenalia, over any of the juvenile, adolescent, twentysomething and thirtysomething angsty bands who clogged up "alternative" radio for the better part of the 90s, and persist in not going away fast enough.

Besides, Classic Lyric Props have to go to her for having a song ("My World") with the lines "I never spend less than an hour washin my hair in the shower, it always takes five hours to make it straight," followed shortly by "in this head my thoughts are deep."

As far as the videos go ... chicks in white button-down shirts and ties are Classic.

Tep (ktepi), Monday, 7 October 2002 04:33 (twenty-three years ago)

I wish she was a bit of plankton.

Ashley Andel, Monday, 7 October 2002 04:44 (twenty-three years ago)

oh god. i saw some 14 year old wearing a tie under her drama club jacket today. make it stop.

hey aaron i don't think you'll have to worry about anyone's 'oh my god, MY CRED' sleeping habits -- search on 'april lavender'

btw: can we get a ruling on who lyric props go to when the person singing the song didn't write said lyrics? not to be a stickler here but the rules seem to shift on this point.

maura (maura), Monday, 7 October 2002 04:45 (twenty-three years ago)

I always liked the preppier girls more than the punk girls in high school, and Avril Lavigne is a good reminder why. "Complicated" blew; I gotta admit that Sk8ter Boi has some killer hooks but the lyrics, particularly the last verse, make me want to retch. Stuck-up little wannabe.

My name is Kenny (My name is Kenny), Monday, 7 October 2002 04:54 (twenty-three years ago)

maura those are the worst reasons to dislike avril ever, do you hate fun??

simon trife (simon_tr), Monday, 7 October 2002 04:55 (twenty-three years ago)

sk8er boi's pretty catchy up until she yodels at the end.

as for hot or not...yes, rather.

brian badword (badwords), Monday, 7 October 2002 05:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Am I missing something? She did write (or co-wrote) the "My World" lyrics -- and the rest of the album, as the "teen singer/songwriters are the new orange" marketing keeps reminding us.

Tep (ktepi), Monday, 7 October 2002 05:04 (twenty-three years ago)

so sk8er boi is catchy - the matrix are professional SONGWRITERS! "catchy" is nothing but a marketable skill! at some point it's not so much fun as it is CRASS!

And the "irony" of liking this shit is so transparent! All it takes is money to get your ILX props!

Aaron A., Monday, 7 October 2002 05:27 (twenty-three years ago)

Avril's songs are DAMN catchy, great great soaring whizbangtastic pop melodies, but everything else about her is pretty lame. And those lyrics... oy. I cringe every time I hear her sing "Can I make it any more obvious?" (no) and "What more can I say?" (a lot).

Jody Beth Rosen, Monday, 7 October 2002 05:35 (twenty-three years ago)

did you see on letterman her drummers bass drum said "the pixies rule" on it? man shes hot.

chaki (chaki), Monday, 7 October 2002 05:53 (twenty-three years ago)

My friend Emerson Dameron (name dropped for Mr. Trife's possible amusement) insisted her last name was "Legrange" when we were talking about her earlier tonight.

James Blount (James Blount), Monday, 7 October 2002 05:55 (twenty-three years ago)

omg check it out this dude is too smart to fall for record company machinations or their dirty money!

simon trife (simon_tr), Monday, 7 October 2002 05:56 (twenty-three years ago)

oh hi jb, i think i met this emerson dude once, anyway big ups lagrange, original bubba country!

simon trife (simon_tr), Monday, 7 October 2002 05:58 (twenty-three years ago)

anyway fuck you aaron a all it takes is PICTURES of money to get my props, i love my pen & pixel niggas

simon trife (simon_tr), Monday, 7 October 2002 06:00 (twenty-three years ago)

simon, I actually showed him your Eminem review and he said 'that's the best thing I've read on Pitchfork'.

James Blount (James Blount), Monday, 7 October 2002 06:05 (twenty-three years ago)

beautiful!! hey isnt he the wuog dude, can you get me like a super late night show there?!? i promise ill radio bleep big tymers songs and everything

simon trife (simon_tr), Monday, 7 October 2002 06:09 (twenty-three years ago)

All it takes is money to get your ILX props!

hooks and teen girls get props from me all day.

brian badword (badwords), Monday, 7 October 2002 06:10 (twenty-three years ago)

no no it was the money admit it you fucking sheep! youre all sheep! baaaa!!

simon trife (simon_tr), Monday, 7 October 2002 06:12 (twenty-three years ago)

He is most definitely the WUOG dude. If you're a UGA student you can get in, otherwise the answer's no (although Jon Fernandez from Olivia Tremor Control / Wuxtry once signed up for a shift and it took them a few weeks to realize he wasn't a student, so who knows?)

James Blount (James Blount), Monday, 7 October 2002 06:17 (twenty-three years ago)

yeah i dont care if you really like her, 'making a music people like' is nothing more than a marketable skill!!

simon trife (simon_tr), Monday, 7 October 2002 06:18 (twenty-three years ago)

oh hi again jb, jons never told me that story but hmm maybe i should try, when i first moved here i tried to get a job at the gospel rnb station on w broad near the dairy queen but they told me the only dj they have is an mp3 randomizer on their server!!

simon trife (simon_tr), Monday, 7 October 2002 06:20 (twenty-three years ago)

Disillusioned! 880 AM off my pre-programmed dial! Wait, don't they have that guy who played on Brilliant Corners, etc. (ask Jon, and tell him 'hi' from me) doing a jazz show or something?

James Blount (James Blount), Monday, 7 October 2002 06:28 (twenty-three years ago)

oh yeah, i like her fangs too.

brian badword (badwords), Monday, 7 October 2002 06:34 (twenty-three years ago)

I listened to the LP on a listening post on Saturday. I think the singles are great (=> Avril L is grebt), but there was nothing else as good on the record. More uptempo stuff like Sk8er Boi please!

She was truly appalling on TOTP last Friday tho.

Jeff W (Jeff W), Monday, 7 October 2002 07:33 (twenty-three years ago)

avril rules!!

jel -- (jel), Monday, 7 October 2002 08:04 (twenty-three years ago)

My blog keeps getting referrals from people searching for "Avril Lavinge" and "Avril Lange." And especially "Avril Levine." Jeez... I realize the whole French-Canadian deal is difficult for some Americans to wrap their heads around, but her name's not THAT hard to spell, is it?

Jody Beth Rosen, Monday, 7 October 2002 08:27 (twenty-three years ago)

her real name IS April Levine tho i figure...

blueski, Monday, 7 October 2002 08:56 (twenty-three years ago)

I sort of assumed she'd be rubbish based on a giveaway track on some HMV sampler but "Complicated" sounded great on the charts! She has a really nice voice. Off to find a download...

Tom (Groke), Monday, 7 October 2002 09:07 (twenty-three years ago)

Fascinating things about Avril Lavigne:

1) If Kate Winslet and Leonardo di Caprio's characters in Titanic were to have a child, she is what it would look like (she is)

2) I'm just waiting for her nervous breakdown, then things'll get really interesting.

Mr Swygart (mrswygart), Monday, 7 October 2002 09:14 (twenty-three years ago)

Avril is Alanis M without the 69 mile long face. There's nothing in her music (or look) that I can relate to. Saw her on Top Of the Pop and her look and presentation was pretty bland, which, despite my dislike of her, surprised me.

nathalie (nathalie), Monday, 7 October 2002 09:21 (twenty-three years ago)

But her vowel sounds are SCRUMPTIOUS!

Tom (Groke), Monday, 7 October 2002 09:25 (twenty-three years ago)

Y'all don't know what it's like
Being female, middle class and white.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Monday, 7 October 2002 09:27 (twenty-three years ago)

Dom you're right I DONT!!!

Tom (Groke), Monday, 7 October 2002 09:28 (twenty-three years ago)

her real name IS April Levine tho i figure...

You probably wouldn't figure if you knew how common names like 'Levigne' are here. In fact it's 'Levine' that sounds more unusual to me.

My two cents - I'll admit that I've only heard her two hits so ths isn't a comment on any more than that, but I went to highschool in town next to Avril's and god, and practically everything about her reminds me of why I got the fuck out of there (ESPECIALLY those vowel sounds!!! I'm trying to ditcch mine). It's hard to explain perhaps, but there did seem to be a particularly shallow element to the juvenile social machinations out there - and she's showing her roots (can I say that or is it a hoary old cliche?). Radio oversaturation has destroyed the appeal that any of the hooks had in the beginning. The only redeeming bit I can still mention is that bit near the end of 'Sk8er Boi' (it physically HURTS to type that) where the song kind of ascends and really sounds good for about four whole seconds, but then the aforementiones "yodel" drops with all the welcome effect of a stinkbomb.

Kim (Kim), Monday, 7 October 2002 09:37 (twenty-three years ago)

pls excuse typos - apparently not awake yet.

Kim (Kim), Monday, 7 October 2002 09:38 (twenty-three years ago)

crap. lame. just very bad.

g-kit (g-kit), Monday, 7 October 2002 09:48 (twenty-three years ago)

I think the central theme of "complicated" is fairly easy to relate to, it's just about people rushing about and not taking it easy, I can relate to that.

It's a nice little song, that I will probably have forgotten in six months = the sign of a great pop song.

jel -- (jel), Monday, 7 October 2002 09:50 (twenty-three years ago)

Annoying melodramatic vocal style as bad as Alanis and 4 Non Blondes, the music/production is ghastly too - overbaked corporate rock. Avoid.

DJ Martian (djmartian), Monday, 7 October 2002 09:58 (twenty-three years ago)

Are y'all hearing a different song? My ears must be on a different wave length!

jel -- (jel), Monday, 7 October 2002 10:04 (twenty-three years ago)

(yes they are, jel. melodramatic? like alanis???? pfffft!)

zebedee, Monday, 7 October 2002 10:12 (twenty-three years ago)

prefer Pink, i think...

blueski, Monday, 7 October 2002 11:02 (twenty-three years ago)

Can someone fucking hate her please? I'm getting disturbed.

She's like Limp Bizkit for girls, Dom appears to be suggesting this also and he's otm. I keep hearing the Alanis comparisons but at least Alanis had the fucking decency to sing about a vaguely trendy buzzword, I mean a song about how your boyfriend is um....different with his friends is just fucking ridiculous whining a la nu metal.

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 7 October 2002 11:06 (twenty-three years ago)

oh but every girl singer who goes anywhere near a musical instrument gets compared to alanis!

jel -- (jel), Monday, 7 October 2002 11:12 (twenty-three years ago)

Limp Bizkit for girls = A GREAT IDEA, I think.

AL = Buffy x Fiona Apple x Dawson's Creek x Wheatus divided by Britney = the best new US (ok, she's Canadian) teenpop act this year.

(and I wuv the ties)

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Monday, 7 October 2002 11:14 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah I don't think she's anything like Alanis and as cute and all as she is I can't think of many things I think are worse, where's the twee motherfuckers emoticon gone.

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 7 October 2002 11:17 (twenty-three years ago)

Fupping horrible! Total DUD! If we find out that she uses her ties in kinki-choking sex, then I may change my mind.

She makes Veruca Salt look like The Fall, and now we must prepare ourselves for all the Avril copycats.

kinski (kinski), Monday, 7 October 2002 11:18 (twenty-three years ago)

I think there are similarities to Alanis - the pert but slightly tremulous vocalising for instance - but the outlook is daytime soap not daytime talkshow.

Tom (Groke), Monday, 7 October 2002 11:24 (twenty-three years ago)

Maybe I'm thinking of a different girl - this is the one who's being marketed as the anti-Britney right?

James Blount (James Blount), Monday, 7 October 2002 11:46 (twenty-three years ago)

no, I think that was Michelle Branch, who (co-)Writes Her Own Songs.

g.cannon (gcannon), Monday, 7 October 2002 12:25 (twenty-three years ago)

Well, she is 'one of' the 'anti-brtineys.' (Branch, Carlton, I guess Pink). I've seen her referred to as such multiple times in print -- once with helpful tale-of-tape style chart, too! USA TODAY and Chicago Sun-Times both come to mind as printing this. (Not DeRogatis on the latter, tho -- he'd say, 'b-b-but she's not punk! listen to Screeching Weasel.' Or something.)

scott pl. (scott pl.), Monday, 7 October 2002 12:29 (twenty-three years ago)

Pink seems to get lumped in with whatever's being marketed at the time -- her 2nd album is being marketed as the antidote to the teendancepop the label claimed her first album was. I'm sure if the big thing on campus when album #3 comes out is post-ironic electroswingpunk, the label will tell us that's what Pink is now.

The Alanis comparisons seem to come up for every female singer to premiere after "You Oughta Know." When a singer is disliked, apparently she's always either Britney or Alanis. I'm okay with that as long as, from now on, disliked male singers must be either David Cassidy or Everlast.

Tep (ktepi), Monday, 7 October 2002 12:59 (twenty-three years ago)

jel, you are going straight to heaven someday

Josh (Josh), Monday, 7 October 2002 13:29 (twenty-three years ago)

The anti-Britney?!? Eep. She may be wearing (pseudo)-grunge clobber, she's also marketed. No, I don't hate her for that reason. I could care less whether someone's marketed. Actually, I would (almost) say I am in favour of it: that way I am aware of the existence of the music(ian). But she's a copy of a copy of a copy. There's no message in her music, or certainly nothing (positive) I can learn from it. As much as I dislike, say, Patti Smith, she at least had something worthwhile to say. Avril just makes throwaway pop music that won't last beyond the next month.

nathalie (nathalie), Monday, 7 October 2002 14:20 (twenty-three years ago)

I think the message of "Complicated", i.e. "stop acting one way with your friends and another with me", is a pretty positive one.

Tom (Groke), Monday, 7 October 2002 14:23 (twenty-three years ago)

I may be in the minority, but I've never cared about messages in music, as long as -- if one was present -- it wasn't shoved down my throat (i.e., Consolidated at their worst/best). Even then I can usually put up with it if the song's solid in other respects.

Then again, friends mock me for hardly ever paying attention to lyrics -- even my favorite artists, I won't generally recognize a lyric if it's quoted at me without being sung.

Tep (ktepi), Monday, 7 October 2002 14:28 (twenty-three years ago)

"Complicated" sucked major rocks through the world's tiniest straw. The video was even stupider. But that one stupidly titled new single was in fact perfect dinner music at my local fave taco place, especially when you can't hear much of anything beyond the melody and a bit of the singing. Therefore she gets a pass.

Fear not about following lyrics in general, Tep. I sure don't! :-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 7 October 2002 14:29 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh I don't particularly care about 'messages' in music, but the criticism that pop songs don't have them is generally unfounded.

Tom (Groke), Monday, 7 October 2002 14:37 (twenty-three years ago)

I think pop songs have too many if anything....

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 7 October 2002 14:40 (twenty-three years ago)

Ha! - I was totally thinking of Michelle Branch! (she's the one with the rolling piano, right?)

James Blount (James Blount), Monday, 7 October 2002 15:49 (twenty-three years ago)

simon i didn't mention any of the reasons i disliked her in my post! there are so many, too.

maura (maura), Monday, 7 October 2002 16:00 (twenty-three years ago)

haha, that's vanessa carlton!

dave k, Monday, 7 October 2002 16:05 (twenty-three years ago)

yep 'complicated' has been growing on me, i think. i was station-surfing yesterday (not a difficult task when you've got like 8 stations) and i stopped on the one playing it, so that must mean something. as for her attractivity, someone I know (haha actually it was an 8yr old) pointed out that she's got scary vampire teeth and now it's kind hard not to see them. not that that's a de-hotifier really. she's hot enough to be called "hot", i'd say. and i like "just like a pill" too now! urgent and key: i am qualified to attend slumber parties and have pillow fights in my underwear yet?

Mitch Lastnamewithheld (mitchlnw), Monday, 7 October 2002 16:06 (twenty-three years ago)

I've not seen a picture of her yet. I still don't like "Just Like A Pill"...well OK maybe a bit.

Tom (Groke), Monday, 7 October 2002 16:08 (twenty-three years ago)

"Sk8er Boi" is my favourite single of the year so far.

sundar subramanian, Monday, 7 October 2002 16:09 (twenty-three years ago)

her album is £10 in HMV! I'm gonna buy it!

(oh and thanks josh!)

jel -- (jel), Monday, 7 October 2002 16:17 (twenty-three years ago)

She gives good Sheryl Crow Chorus.

Arthur (Arthur), Monday, 7 October 2002 16:19 (twenty-three years ago)

piX0r of avril just for tom
http://www.80snostalgia.com/classictv/flumps/characters/posie.jpg

zebedee, Monday, 7 October 2002 16:20 (twenty-three years ago)

boo!

zebedee, Monday, 7 October 2002 16:20 (twenty-three years ago)

Vanessa Carlton! Are any of these people in Sheryl Crow's league (Sheryl has at least four songs I love - "My Favorite Mistake", "Everyday is a Winding Road", "Anything but Down", and "Polyester Bride")

James Blount (James Blount), Monday, 7 October 2002 16:21 (twenty-three years ago)

polyester bride is a liz phair song, but it does sound like s.crow.

scott pl. (scott pl.), Monday, 7 October 2002 16:24 (twenty-three years ago)

Vanessa Carlton! Are any of these people in Sheryl Crow's league

More than you know.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 7 October 2002 16:27 (twenty-three years ago)

I thought I liked Avril until I heard "Skater Bois" or whatever that song is called. Then I frowned.

Mandee, Monday, 7 October 2002 16:28 (twenty-three years ago)

Avril proves the great dictum: bands that make music videos based in shopping malls suck dogs.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Monday, 7 October 2002 16:28 (twenty-three years ago)

gregg alexander to thread!

scott pl. (scott pl.), Monday, 7 October 2002 16:30 (twenty-three years ago)

Gregg is the axiomatic point on which the dictum rests.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 7 October 2002 16:32 (twenty-three years ago)

"bands that make music videos based in shopping malls suck dogs" - isn't part of the "Makes No Sense At All" video in a shopping mall?

James Blount (James Blount), Monday, 7 October 2002 16:49 (twenty-three years ago)

Dammit further proof.

Tom (Groke), Monday, 7 October 2002 16:54 (twenty-three years ago)

I knew you'd say that!

James Blount (James Blount), Monday, 7 October 2002 16:58 (twenty-three years ago)

Bah. "Makes No Sense at All" is GR8E!

Jody Beth Rosen, Monday, 7 October 2002 17:32 (twenty-three years ago)

Who would have guessed five years ago that Fiona Apple would be so influential? Vanessa Carlton has adopted her sound, Avril Lavigne's adopted her persona...

My name is Kenny (My name is Kenny), Monday, 7 October 2002 17:38 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm not sure Fiona Apple would ever have referred to herself as a "rock chick," though, or confessed to having fun.

Tep (ktepi), Monday, 7 October 2002 18:48 (twenty-three years ago)

Rubbish.

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Monday, 7 October 2002 19:07 (twenty-three years ago)

Fiona Apple sounded nothing like any of these people.

Melissa W (Melissa W), Monday, 7 October 2002 19:19 (twenty-three years ago)

admit it. you all dress like avril.

dyson (dyson), Monday, 7 October 2002 19:54 (twenty-three years ago)

Ties are classic, BTW

sundar subramanian, Monday, 7 October 2002 19:59 (twenty-three years ago)

I dress like Gwen Stefani. I'm a Gwennabe.

Tep (ktepi), Monday, 7 October 2002 19:59 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh God, I'm hearing "Sk8er Boi" for the first time... PLEASE MOMMY MAKE THE HURTING STOP. (And what is this "yodelling" section people are talking about? That's about the only thing that could put entertainment this song and I've completely missed it. Or are you talking about the horrific "YEAH YEAH YEAH!" part?) Ned, you will be deeply embarrassed for saying good things about song the next time you hear it. It's a female version of Andrew WK without keyboards!

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 7 October 2002 20:15 (twenty-three years ago)

admit it. you all dress like avril.

I dress like Anvil.

Jody Beth Rosen, Monday, 7 October 2002 20:15 (twenty-three years ago)

Ned, you will be deeply embarrassed for saying good things about song the next time you hear it. It's a female version
of Andrew WK without keyboards!

Heh. Well, no wonder Tom likes it, then. ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 7 October 2002 20:28 (twenty-three years ago)

sk8r boi passes the ned test but the no doubt singles dont?!

chaki (chaki), Monday, 7 October 2002 20:31 (twenty-three years ago)

the Kerrang Direktory gives Anvil's "metal on metal" 5 out of 5!

jel -- (jel), Monday, 7 October 2002 20:31 (twenty-three years ago)

Hearing the No Doubt singles at the same particular taco place just made me hate them more.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 7 October 2002 20:35 (twenty-three years ago)

I thought there are keyboards or at least synths in "Sk8er Boi"? The Andrew WK comparison makes me happy.

sundar subramanian, Monday, 7 October 2002 21:09 (twenty-three years ago)

Anvil videos ruled, BTW.

sundar subramanian, Monday, 7 October 2002 21:18 (twenty-three years ago)

I hear lots of guitar and overdubbed voices, but no keyboard/synth. Oh, and an annoying scratch effect over the whole track at one point.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 7 October 2002 21:27 (twenty-three years ago)

what is this "yodelling" section people are talking about?

the yodel = that "rock each others' werr-EE-AWWllld" sudden frog-in-the-throat caterwaul.

brian badword (badwords), Monday, 7 October 2002 21:45 (twenty-three years ago)

Avril is Pink for rockists.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Tuesday, 8 October 2002 03:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Pink is for rockists.

Jody Beth Rosen, Tuesday, 8 October 2002 03:06 (twenty-three years ago)

i thought pink was pink for rockists?

there is a v. funny exchange in the new issue of ym (!) where a.l. disclaims all knowledge of her being known as 'punk' and the writer's like, wait, no, you said right here in our magazine two months ago that you are, what are you talking about? and avril gets all evasive. i love when writers have balls (because i have none when i get into interview mode, i'll admit it) and i think we have christina kelly to thank for that little bit.

a.l. lineage traces more back to liz phair -- who's working with her songwriters -- than to fiona apple, no? and maybe a little bit of old-school gwen stefani?

does anyone else think it's odd that us rock radio won't touch 'sk8er boi'? it's got that whole metal edge pinup thing going on, much like the poppier (boy-fronted) rock bands out there ...

maura (maura), Tuesday, 8 October 2002 03:11 (twenty-three years ago)

Are there ANY women on US rock radio? Besides the brave DJs fending off dopey morning show hosts and their casual mysogyny, that is.

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 8 October 2002 03:58 (twenty-three years ago)

worse than awful. she gave a free show at my work on my last day there but i chose to go watch the new star wars instead. i guess that's more faint praise for star wars than anything else, though...

mbosa, Tuesday, 8 October 2002 08:01 (twenty-three years ago)

it is 58 years since john otway had a hit and he is back to destroy packaged pop: it said so on the news!!

mark s (mark s), Tuesday, 8 October 2002 08:25 (twenty-three years ago)

yeah, destroy packaged pop...by sounding like packaged pop?!!

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Tuesday, 8 October 2002 08:49 (twenty-three years ago)

I like Avril - her songs, her voice & her image.

Most of the anti-Avril stuff on the 'net seems to be rooted in envy. So she might not be a very good guitarist, so she might not be a genuine 70's Brit punk - who cares! She sounds good and her image is a welcome alternative.

Crikey, I'd rather girls imitate her by wearing neckties than imitate Xtina by wearing whatever it was that Xtina was wearing (does something that small have a name?) - not meaning to bring up an issue that's already been done to death.

toraneko (toraneko), Tuesday, 8 October 2002 10:33 (twenty-three years ago)

hahaha that's always the reason why people slate someone else (more famous/successful): they are just jealous. as original as avril's music. ;-)

nathalie (nathalie), Tuesday, 8 October 2002 10:55 (twenty-three years ago)

Are there ANY women [in the music] on US rock radio?

today? not unless you count older smashing pumpkins records where d'arcy plays bass. and maybe the odd no doubt song will get spun once in a while.

maura (maura), Tuesday, 8 October 2002 11:35 (twenty-three years ago)

Toraneko, I can honestly say that my distaste for Avril has nothing to do with jealousy and everything to do with her music getting on my last nerve.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 8 October 2002 11:37 (twenty-three years ago)

I didn't mean you guys, I meant the people who have devoted hours of blogging to dissing her and have gone as far as making "I hate Avril" sites.

toraneko (toraneko), Tuesday, 8 October 2002 13:14 (twenty-three years ago)

"I Hate [XXXXX]" sites are often due to boredom and a desire to be funny as much as anything else. Take, for example, Bitchy Spice's Spice Rack.

I do agree that sites of unrelenting hate with no shred of humor or wit are a resounding dud, though. Bile is best served with a smile.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 8 October 2002 14:57 (twenty-three years ago)

I've been holding off really moaning about this shit because I was worried that how crap I think it is was unhealthy and slightly odd.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 8 October 2002 15:12 (twenty-three years ago)

I have no particular problem with this stuff, but "Complicated" sounds like it was written by a 40 year old. "Take off all your preppy clothes" sounds like the plot from an old Silver Spoons episode. I'm having an impossible time imagining to whom she would be singing this song.

Kris (aqueduct), Tuesday, 8 October 2002 17:57 (twenty-three years ago)

Unless she's singing this to her manager, in which case classic.

Kris (aqueduct), Tuesday, 8 October 2002 17:59 (twenty-three years ago)

"Take off all your preppy clothes" sounds like the plot from an old Silver Spoons episode.

You're right. Who cares about preppies anymore?

Jody Beth Rosen, Tuesday, 8 October 2002 18:02 (twenty-three years ago)

...she's got scary vampire teeth and now it's kind hard not to see them. not that that's a de-hotifier really...

She can turn goth when she's in her 20s.

nickn (nickn), Tuesday, 8 October 2002 19:58 (twenty-three years ago)

Kris and Jody - see my post way up there. In eastern Ontario they DO still care because they're all still living in some crazy John Hughes-land. Frighteningly, I don't doubt her sincerity for a second.

Kim (Kim), Tuesday, 8 October 2002 21:30 (twenty-three years ago)

When Sharif's dad in Menace tells Sharif "not to be bringing home none of them devils", he probably had Avril's teeth in mind.

Doug, Wednesday, 9 October 2002 01:45 (twenty-three years ago)

i hate avril. i'm not jealous of her. i just think her music sucks shite. and i hate her boy-identified-but-just-feminine-enough image bullshit.

di smith (lucylurex), Wednesday, 9 October 2002 02:19 (twenty-three years ago)

Who cares about preppies anymore?

LFO.

scott pl. (scott pl.), Wednesday, 9 October 2002 04:23 (twenty-three years ago)

surely it's all about imagining the poor girl naked? i haven't herd anything she's done

bob snoom, Wednesday, 9 October 2002 09:30 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't mind her image - she dresses like quite a lot of the 16 - 25 year old girls I know (which is more than I can say for Xtine & Britney but then they are probably going for a younger audience anyway).

toraneko (toraneko), Wednesday, 9 October 2002 15:32 (twenty-three years ago)

Actually, at this point I'd say that Britney, Xtina, Avril, Pink, Vanessa and Michelle are all aiming at the same 13 - 25 age range, with Xtina really wanting to appeal to 25+ men.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 9 October 2002 17:15 (twenty-three years ago)

doesn't britney as well though (want to appeal to 25+ men)? i mean her first video she was in a school uniform!

di smith (lucylurex), Wednesday, 9 October 2002 22:20 (twenty-three years ago)

"Complicated" is on heavy rotation on drivetime radio 1, which means I get to hear it twice a day. It's not *that* bad, I suppose, but I find the way she does the "chill out/it's all been done before" bit, she sounds quite horribly condescending, and it gets on my wick a bit. There was some mention ov all young female singers being compared to Alanis Morrisette, which may be true, but I do think "Complicated" sounds very Alanis-lite-ish. Her act, which appears to me to be the kind of young-but-wise-beyond-her-years, but also kooky hippie chick thing that would have got thee late Philip K Dick hot, well, I find that a bit nauseating as well. Puddle of Mudd (also on heavy rotation) are far, far worse though.

N0RM4N PH4Y, Wednesday, 9 October 2002 23:03 (twenty-three years ago)

Di: Very valid point, although I think there's an aura of innocence around early Britney that really is aimed at younger teens.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 10 October 2002 01:23 (twenty-three years ago)

I keep seeing this thread at the top of new answers, so I just want to say I have no idea who Avril Lavigne is.

Sean (Sean), Thursday, 10 October 2002 01:44 (twenty-three years ago)

i just realized that 'sk8er boi' is pretty much a wholesale remake of pretty boy floyd's 'rock and roll is gonna set the night on fire.' plus ca change ...

maura (maura), Thursday, 10 October 2002 02:27 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't like "Complicated" nearly as much.

sundar subramanian, Thursday, 10 October 2002 22:09 (twenty-three years ago)

She's the worst thing to happen to the world this year.

man, Tuesday, 19 November 2002 00:14 (twenty-three years ago)

Hey man,
a few years ago my friend Mike suggested via email to Henry Rollins that in order to combat the current trends in music and popular culture Henry and he should organize "MANFEST", a day long festival concert featuring a Black Flag reunion and any metal band with a name ending in -ion or -ary.
Anyhoo, if they ever pull that off you could probably sue for copyright infringement.

Helltime Producto (Pavlik), Tuesday, 19 November 2002 00:33 (twenty-three years ago)

I met Henry Rollins once, in a gym. I didn't meet him per se, I just saw him. He kind of freaked me out, being so stereotypical Henry Rollins like, so I just wandered away.

Ally (mlescaut), Tuesday, 19 November 2002 02:34 (twenty-three years ago)

Aight, so ppl down on her for "falling into the evil record label's hands". Its what she wanted. Everyone has a different way of thinking. I mean, I want to be rich & famous, & u gotta do what u gotta do. As for lyrics, well...lets see...she was like 16 or 17 when she started...so yeah, they'll definately be juvenile. Since when did teenagers have to have songs that adults think have substance. I mean, I'm a teenager, maybe teenagers know what she's talking about. As for the whole punk/skater thing. She can be who she wants to be, fake or not. I mean, at least she's not prancing around in a freaking thong and bra. Gross. As for the ties. MAYBE SHE LIKES/LIKED TIES! Its like, some ppl are downing her for wearing ties, cauz she's going by what other ppl think is cool...hmmm....well, if she stopped wearing the ties because some ppl said to, she'd be going by what they think is cool. So either way its...stupid. I might not make much sense, and no, I don't wear ties, although I would if I thought it was cute because its what I want and not what ppl want or what ppl think is fake or whatnot...anywayz, if u need me to explain more....in depth...cauz I know I prolly make no sense at all. I jaberr, I rant, that's me. Plz don't personally attack me, I'm not personally attacking anyone....at least I don't think I am...and if I am, sorry, lol. I try to stay on everyone's good side while still vocalizing my opinion.

avril sucks. simple as that.

rayna, Sunday, 25 May 2003 03:36 (twenty-two years ago)

I didn't want to like her, and I resisted it mightily for a long time, then realized that everytime her songs came on the radio, I was singing along, downloaded a few more than decided fuck it, I declare my Avril love to the WORLD!

luna (luna.c), Sunday, 25 May 2003 19:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Who gives a shit about the album? I mean, it's probably shit but Avril? Pwoar! Lovely pouting lips! And nice everything else! She'll do me!

P.S. If I met Henry Rollins in a gym I'd try and assassinate him. The man would look better under the wheels of a big bus.

Calz (Calz), Sunday, 25 May 2003 19:49 (twenty-two years ago)

luna, you disturb me more and more each day.

oops (Oops), Sunday, 25 May 2003 19:54 (twenty-two years ago)

I can live with that.

i saw the newest video yesterday and my jaw dropped. Avril lavigne can be the most beutiful girl when she isnt acting like a skater punk. infact when she is in her underwear she is down right mesmerizing.

thoreau, Sunday, 11 April 2004 00:17 (twenty-two years ago)

oh no shes in her underwear?!?! omg im gunna die boing boing. i love avril seriously.

I'd hit it. Or wait, tap it.

Which is the good one?

David Allen (David Allen), Sunday, 11 April 2004 04:33 (twenty-two years ago)

"Don't Tell Me" has been the most played song in my iTunes for weeks. I'm distressingly excited about this record--though the underwear in the video does nothing for me. Too indie.

adam (adam), Sunday, 11 April 2004 12:35 (twenty-two years ago)

OK, I seriously hope Avril has a long and productive career.

ModJ (ModJ), Sunday, 11 April 2004 15:25 (twenty-two years ago)

well arista's kind of falling apart/being assimilated into BMG right now, right? It will be interesting to see if marketing can maintain their focus.

teeny (teeny), Sunday, 11 April 2004 16:27 (twenty-two years ago)

am I the only person who think her songs are all really pop-country sounding? They tend to have more story-based lyrics, that weird Canadian twang in her voice...is it just me?

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Sunday, 11 April 2004 16:28 (twenty-two years ago)

No. A Shania Twain/Avril Lavigne tour wouldn't be completely nonsensical.

m.e.a. (m.e.a.), Sunday, 11 April 2004 16:34 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah she's way more Shania than Alanis, style-wise (even if she has that post-Morrissette shameless eccentricity, i.e. those "yeah-yeah"'s on "I'm With You" - which is easily my fave Avril song)

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Sunday, 11 April 2004 16:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Uuh did someone actually compare avrils shit to my beloved Andrew WK???? I hope not. Avril sucks, im not jealous, she actually does suck, get over it, there im done. Have a super day. :^)

No, that can't be cleavage ... you must be hallucinating because Avril has repeatedly said that she would not use her body to portray a sexy image and sell records.
