Was there ever a 'precover x in the style of x' rule? I've only ever heard one NIN track to my knowledge, so I'd be totally making it up if that was the case here.

There's been no 'in the style of' rule, and AFAIK the track length restriction was only for the Loutallica album. These pre-cover albums have been pretty much 'do whatever you feel like' otherwise.

i think i came up with the original idea for the precovers albums and it was basically just about taking a song title and being inspired by it. you aren't necessarily supposed to sound like the band, the time limit thing was just for LULU (though i thought it added a fun wrinkle) - it's just about using the song title as a jumping-off point and seeing what you end up with.

Ok, done! One hitch - I've mixed down two versions. One of the two versions is generally approved of, but the other has some crazy atonal keyboard work over the top of the verse. I am a great fan of this version, but my creative partner is not - so much so that she refuses to even hear it.

Shall I just send both? Or should I hide my light under a bushel, accept my Lot and prevent her from turning salty, bitter or sour?

I'm happy with what I sent but happier with the weirdo bleepy version which for reasons of marital diplomacy has been reduced to 'remix' status. Think of that as my final vision if it ever gets released. I claim precedent as Right Where It Belongs was remixed as a bonus track on With Teeth :p
