fun fact: in early 2004, rumor mills were buzzing that Jay and Pharrell had gone into the studio to make a remix of "Change Clothes," but it never came out. then over a year later, the track they'd made ended up as Slim Thug's lead single, with Jay's vocals eventually leaking as a supposed remix of "I Ain't Heard Of That," not "Change Clothes."

i didn't know people were really gassed off "i ain't heard of that"... i bought 'already platinum' on vinyl a while back for $5, i should listen to it soon

Slim Thug track is pretty good, great hook. The (oh so necessary) Bun B remix is good too. The three-note descending synth is what holds the whole thing together. Simple-ass beat but I really like Neps at their most minimal.

i actually just put the Bun B remix in the playlist, because i realized i had a live version on there before and the regular Slim Thug solo version is not on Spotify at all.

i was super disappointed to find i was starting the poll w/ something i'm as unimpressed with as "I Ain't Heard of That," was really hoping it would be the track that ended up at #41.

Woo @ "Flashback". There was a lot of Kelis in my ballot (there was even more in the one I sent to V79) inc. this one. Having a whole album to play with did seem to bring out the best in the Neptunes.

Def a minor song to start with. Interested to hear what 41 is!

I ended up with a crazy amount of Kelis on my ballot - solo tracks and guest spots. I agree she brought out the best in them, partly because of the freedom to experiment on albums without worrying about making every track a hit. And her voice was so versatile - she could sing songs as diverse as Suspended and Milkshake and Young, Fresh 'n' New, as well as hooks on hip hop tracks. All of the Kelis songs on my ballot sound very distinct from each other.

Yeah, I voted for a fair few Kelis tracks, this one was the highest. Glad to see it place.

'Young, Fresh 'n' New' is another great Kelis track.

I like HHNF but yeah 'Trill' is one of the weaker songs.

"Work It Out" is amazing as, like, the debut solo single of someone everyone knew was becoming a gigantic star, produced by the biggest hitmakers in pop, attached to a blockbuster summer movie, and it was so bad that it just vanished instantly.

I remember when this first came out, my reaction was "holy shit, we are never going to hear from Beyonce again after this brick"

then "Crazy In Love" happened

next song is the only track on the list actually produced by a non-Neptune, with Chad and Pharrell only co-writing and playing on it

looking at wikipedia at least i don't remember any of her songs from that era that got zero pop radio play (work it out, fighting temptation, summertime)

The synth on La La La is very meaty. Didn't vote for that track but do have love for it.

yeah i have a post somewhere about how circa '02 their drums were getting kind of thin and plinky but with these fat bass synth lines that made the tracks feel like teetering top-heavy things, "La La La" and "N***a Please" being the classic examples

When they do drums right they have some of the snappiest snares in pop music. Them and like Rich Harrison.

"N***a Please" is an amaizng and underrated track IMO.

I will always have love for "Got Your Money" because it reminds me of stalking the streets of Sydney 10 years ago with my friend Natasha, looking for a good place to dance. We passed this club just as this started up and immediately knew we'd found what we were looking for, it was then followed straightaway by "Party Up (Up In Here)" and "Get Low" and it all felt like coming home.

That said I'm highly susceptible to the argument that their best straight disco-funk groove was actually their remix of Backstreet Boys' "The Call".

i didn't vote but had i "la la la" would've been top 5. i just have an immediate, woozy reaction to that bass synth

listening to the small amount of recorded rosco material, i can see why i was so bullish on rosco c.2003. he was such a nice lyricist, like combination of polished street rappers in roc-a-fella second string style and vocab list almost famous late 90s peripheral new york crew but with more insight and more humorless credibility. he had a good feel for how his voice sounded and what he could do with it.

Agree with j0rdan re corny but I think it sits just on the right side of corny. The call & response section is the cheese but it was also a blast on the dance floor because of it. I think the horn accents really pull everything together. This is filed under the awesome drum sound category too. There's some little percussive touches that really fill out the sound. Warm and snappy all at once.

i still think it's hilarious that there was an epic battle of wills between Clipse and Foxy Brown over who would get to use this stupid beat on a post-stardom flop single.

"danger" is my fav mystikal/neps track for sure, that's one that sorta more than the sum to me. mystikal's flow on that entire song is crazy... the groove is very understated by the neps standards (even a lot of their "minimal" stuff is pretty showy) and mystikal kinda just scribbles all over it. but he still stays in the pocket? idk, that track is just crazy to me.

"beautiful" is just so amazing, that song is like a cool shower or something. also that video, man, what a classic. i still yearn to go to rio simply because of this video. also snoop in that chiefs jersey looked so raw.

what doesn't make sense about "shake ya ass but watch yourself"? 2000 era Mystikal was all about caution. danger! danger!

Its all about Pharrell's smooth pre-chorus work that balances the track out perfectly. just a great use of tension and release

i remember that video was the first time i was like "who the hell is this guy with the trucker hat and the high voice? this is crazy." i don't think it even registered for a while that it was the same guy as on Jay-Z's new single because he wasn't in the "I Just Wanna Love U" video.

as embarrassing as Pitchfork's jokey early 00s treatment of rap was, it still cracks me up to remember the headline "Mystikal announces tourdates" with the subheader "stop your cryin', heifer"

yeah...that kind of thing is funny to think about because, sometimes female singers did the melodic hooks he wrote, but almost never guys (other than, like, whoever the hell Marc Dorsey was that did "Luv U Better") because, i mean, who the hell else would sing like Pharrell? barely anyone else was doing any falsetto at all when he first started making hits.

Wow. It's a mark of how strong their catalogue is that it is even possible for these amazing songs to place so low.

First time I heard this was at a Foot Locker by the Santa Monica pier. Was about to walk out when the song kicked in. I remember one of the employees walking over and turning it way up. Listened to the whole thing standing by the the exit then asked what it was then promptly walked across the street to a random music shop and bought Lord Willin.

"Hot in herre" remains the song that has delivered me more dancefloor joy than just about any other. It was a staple at my house parties well into 2003.

Kinda wanted to hate Hot In Here when it got big cos I was entering a short-stinted REAL HIP-HOP phase, but I could never throw salt at it.

word. i didn't even vote for this. to this day it's a great peak of the night club record, when you're drunk enough to be into anything but hearing that slightly ominous intro gives you a good euphoric rush and being able to move into the girl you think might be feeling you, sing along with why you are the bar if you ain't poppin the bottles / what good is all the fame if you ain't fuckin the models.

Not so much a particular phrase, but I've had a problem with it in particular since one day...
I was at my friend Stephen's house. He was flipping through channels and the song came on. His daughter started singing along; she's 4. She ran out of the room, and we were like "what?". She came running back in the room totally buck-naked.

Actually, I can't quite put my finger on why I dislike the lyrics so much; it's a mix of not-liking-the-women-as-objects-ness of it and the amazement-at-how-juvenile it is. But that's just my opinion, and my opinions are 99% of the time totally retarded wrong.

i kinda go back and forth on how i feel about "i just wanna luv u" (another kinda weird hook) but some of jay's best rapping is on that

"superthug" is just wild, i can't believe a song like that was even conceived

on "bouncin back" there are points where mystikal is barely even rapping, i don't know how they ever played that on the radio let alone let it become a smash

"I Just Wanna Love U" chorus is the BEST

kinda regret not voting in this, stunned 'grindin' (which would've probably been my #1) and 'hot in herre' and to a lesser extent 'when the last time' didn't make top ten though i guess when the peaks are this high some ridiculously great stuff will miss out. strong ditto to 'hot in herre's club context being necessary to fully getting it, i was actually kinda underwhelmed by it initially and then i heard it in a club and all was revealed (grandmaster flash was djing weirdly enough). when ppl debated neptunes vs timbaland at the time i leaned strongly timbaland but the neptunes stuff actually sounds fresher to me now, maybe it's nostalgia for what was a really good time for pop and hip-hop radio (and the time when there was a ton of crossover between the two) and maybe it's colored by post-peak sub-par neptunes and pharell stuff being so much easier to ignore and write off than w/ timbaland (though 'blurred lines' being so much better than anything on 20/20 experience - and i like 20/20 experience - feels like one hell of a late goal).
