first, V79 ran the poll: The Official ILM THE NEPTUNES Poll (#27 In Series) - Voting & Campaigning Thread (VOTING STILL OPEN)

then, he disappeared. what happened to that boy?

so, I picked up the baton: JAY-Z TRACKS / NEPTUNES TRACKS REDUX / I JUST WANNA POLL U (BALLOT 2 ME) voting closes June 16th

I received 19 ballots, with votes for 164 different tracks. will be counting down the top 40, with 10 each day today through Friday.

here's the Spotify playlist for the list, will be adding to it as we go: http://open.spotify.com/user/1219464571/playlist/7vtVv3KnqthVGnhnI81jOo

let's go!

#40. Slim Thug – “I Ain’t Heard Of That” (2005)
(99 points, 3 votes)

some dude, Tuesday, 25 June 2013 12:19 (twelve years ago)

fun fact: in early 2004, rumor mills were buzzing that Jay and Pharrell had gone into the studio to make a remix of "Change Clothes," but it never came out. then over a year later, the track they'd made ended up as Slim Thug's lead single, with Jay's vocals eventually leaking as a supposed remix of "I Ain't Heard Of That," not "Change Clothes."

some dude, Tuesday, 25 June 2013 12:22 (twelve years ago)

i didn't know people were really gassed off "i ain't heard of that"... i bought 'already platinum' on vinyl a while back for $5, i should listen to it soon

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 25 June 2013 13:24 (twelve years ago)

I never thought I'd see the day. Well done, some dude.

Ismael Klata, Tuesday, 25 June 2013 13:36 (twelve years ago)

Thanks for doing the roll-out some dude!

Tim F, Tuesday, 25 June 2013 13:40 (twelve years ago)

its a lucky thing that the deadline for this got blurred amirite

Lamp, Tuesday, 25 June 2013 14:36 (twelve years ago)

oh good, i was hoping some other people would be up after i took a nap! ok, next we've got the first of just a couple ties in the results...

some dude, Tuesday, 25 June 2013 14:50 (twelve years ago)

#38. (tie) Kelis – “Flashback)” (2001)
(107 points, 3 votes)

some dude, Tuesday, 25 June 2013 14:50 (twelve years ago)

Slim Thug track is pretty good, great hook. The (oh so necessary) Bun B remix is good too. The three-note descending synth is what holds the whole thing together. Simple-ass beat but I really like Neps at their most minimal.

Shock G Mo Collier (Spottie_Ottie_Dope), Tuesday, 25 June 2013 14:54 (twelve years ago)

i actually just put the Bun B remix in the playlist, because i realized i had a live version on there before and the regular Slim Thug solo version is not on Spotify at all.

some dude, Tuesday, 25 June 2013 14:57 (twelve years ago)

i was super disappointed to find i was starting the poll w/ something i'm as unimpressed with as "I Ain't Heard of That," was really hoping it would be the track that ended up at #41.

some dude, Tuesday, 25 June 2013 14:58 (twelve years ago)

Woo @ "Flashback". There was a lot of Kelis in my ballot (there was even more in the one I sent to V79) inc. this one. Having a whole album to play with did seem to bring out the best in the Neptunes.

Jeff W, Tuesday, 25 June 2013 14:59 (twelve years ago)

Def a minor song to start with. Interested to hear what 41 is!

Shock G Mo Collier (Spottie_Ottie_Dope), Tuesday, 25 June 2013 15:03 (twelve years ago)

I ended up with a crazy amount of Kelis on my ballot - solo tracks and guest spots. I agree she brought out the best in them, partly because of the freedom to experiment on albums without worrying about making every track a hit. And her voice was so versatile - she could sing songs as diverse as Suspended and Milkshake and Young, Fresh 'n' New, as well as hooks on hip hop tracks. All of the Kelis songs on my ballot sound very distinct from each other.

Deafening silence (DL), Tuesday, 25 June 2013 15:16 (twelve years ago)

Yeah, I voted for a fair few Kelis tracks, this one was the highest. Glad to see it place.

Gavin, Leeds, Tuesday, 25 June 2013 15:28 (twelve years ago)

great track, i'm not really that up on kelis unfortunately

i assume ilx brits will boost her a bit in this poll

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 25 June 2013 15:37 (twelve years ago)

Not a fan of most of the Kelis stuff tbf, hasn't dated too well for me. Not strong enough to put ahead of 35 other tracks anyway.

Shock G Mo Collier (Spottie_Ottie_Dope), Tuesday, 25 June 2013 15:43 (twelve years ago)

#38. (tie) Rosco P. Coldchain f/ Pharrell, Pusha T and Boo-Bonic – “Hot” (2003)
(107 points, 3 votes)

some dude, Tuesday, 25 June 2013 15:55 (twelve years ago)

can't even put this on the playlist because Spotify doesn't have all of the Clones compilation, but here's a YouTube:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LLq807gqE6Y

some dude, Tuesday, 25 June 2013 15:56 (twelve years ago)

YES! dylannn and I and one other voter got this in. Never thought this would place. Minimal a/f.

Shock G Mo Collier (Spottie_Ottie_Dope), Tuesday, 25 June 2013 15:58 (twelve years ago)

yay neptunes! i love the i ain't heard of that beat

From the home of the underground railway and stuff (symsymsym), Tuesday, 25 June 2013 16:04 (twelve years ago)

Pusha T verse on that is one of my favorites of his.

Shock G Mo Collier (Spottie_Ottie_Dope), Tuesday, 25 June 2013 16:07 (twelve years ago)

not being able to use spotify overseas is super lame

really surprised at the lack of jay voters, i assume everyone else is like me and is just procrastinating?

k3vin k., Tuesday, 25 June 2013 16:17 (twelve years ago)

roscoe track is pretty dope, that dude's flow was so quietly weird

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 25 June 2013 16:21 (twelve years ago)

where you at k3v?

i knew doing 2 polls at once was kind of a gamble, i'm not surprised the one i said would happen 2nd has been moving slowly. it'll pick up when i set a real end date.

some dude, Tuesday, 25 June 2013 16:27 (twelve years ago)

i'm in thailand. and yeah, i think not committing to a firm dadline for the jay poll is giving people like me a reason to put off voting

k3vin k., Tuesday, 25 June 2013 16:34 (twelve years ago)

deadline! fitting though

k3vin k., Tuesday, 25 June 2013 16:34 (twelve years ago)

Yeah I dont do anything til I know I HAVE to.

Shock G Mo Collier (Spottie_Ottie_Dope), Tuesday, 25 June 2013 16:36 (twelve years ago)

oh i know, i'm the same way. i'm gonna set a date for after the Motown poll has done its thing.

some dude, Tuesday, 25 June 2013 16:37 (twelve years ago)

I'm the other Hot voter. Virtually the only track from Clones that I still play.

Deafening silence (DL), Tuesday, 25 June 2013 16:58 (twelve years ago)

#37. Britney Spears f/ Pharrell – “Boys (The Co-Ed Remix)” (2002)
(133 points, 4 votes)

some dude, Tuesday, 25 June 2013 17:09 (twelve years ago)

never even heard of this, sounds pretty good if a bit pro forma

those breaths are pretty dope tho

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 25 June 2013 17:14 (twelve years ago)

it had a video, it was on TRL for like a week back in the day. so weird to see Pharrell dueting with Britney.

some dude, Tuesday, 25 June 2013 17:22 (twelve years ago)

i kinda assumed people will voting for the better known remix whether they specifically stated they were or not, but the album version has a completely different Neps beat, which is basically just a "Got Your Money" retread:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=17jGDyuVMv4

some dude, Tuesday, 25 June 2013 17:31 (twelve years ago)

that kinda neptunes beat hasn't really aged well to me, the flimsy funk sorta thing

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 25 June 2013 17:34 (twelve years ago)

yeah we can talk about "Got Your Money" later when it obviously places in the poll but man i hate that beat, overrated as shit

some dude, Tuesday, 25 June 2013 17:38 (twelve years ago)

i love that song but the beat is pretty minor either way to me

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 25 June 2013 17:42 (twelve years ago)

Hadnt even heard this Britney. Austin Powers in the vid huh

Shock G Mo Collier (Spottie_Ottie_Dope), Tuesday, 25 June 2013 17:46 (twelve years ago)

OTM J0rdan & some dude - I actually think "Boys" does this sort of thing better than "Got Your Money," but even though that sparse, chromatic funk beat was kinda their aural signature for a while, there were so many other things they did better.

robot-feels-sad-as-cocaine-wears-off (thewufs), Tuesday, 25 June 2013 17:51 (twelve years ago)

#36. Clipse – “Trill” (2006)
(138 points, 4 votes)

some dude, Tuesday, 25 June 2013 18:11 (twelve years ago)

fuck is this garbage-ass song

some dude, Tuesday, 25 June 2013 18:15 (twelve years ago)

man if there's even another song off HHNF

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 25 June 2013 18:17 (twelve years ago)

actually i voted for "mr. me too" i think, but that not withstanding

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 25 June 2013 18:17 (twelve years ago)

this next song is a stone classic, top 5 for me, i'm outraged it's this low

some dude, Tuesday, 25 June 2013 18:41 (twelve years ago)

#35. Usher – “U Don’t Have To Call” (2001)
(145 points, 5 votes)

some dude, Tuesday, 25 June 2013 18:43 (twelve years ago)

hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm. that song is great, i think the problem for me is that it's, like, outside the top 8 or 10 of even usher singles. always kinda gets overshadowed, even on 8701.

remix has A++++++++ classic of all classic ludacris verses, that's the one i always rock

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 25 June 2013 18:45 (twelve years ago)

no way, top 5 usher single too

some dude, Tuesday, 25 June 2013 18:46 (twelve years ago)

thank you for voting for it all though!

some dude, Tuesday, 25 June 2013 18:47 (twelve years ago)

i probably had it too low, looking at my ballot now

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 25 June 2013 18:48 (twelve years ago)

this was 36 on my list and I've no clue why I left it off.

Shock G Mo Collier (Spottie_Ottie_Dope), Tuesday, 25 June 2013 18:52 (twelve years ago)

Not a fan of Trill, one of my least favorite songs on that album.

Shock G Mo Collier (Spottie_Ottie_Dope), Tuesday, 25 June 2013 18:53 (twelve years ago)

The beat is a mess.

Shock G Mo Collier (Spottie_Ottie_Dope), Tuesday, 25 June 2013 18:54 (twelve years ago)

hook is too

some dude, Tuesday, 25 June 2013 18:54 (twelve years ago)

Usher does not age btw.

Shock G Mo Collier (Spottie_Ottie_Dope), Tuesday, 25 June 2013 18:57 (twelve years ago)

I think an Usher poll would be dope.

Shock G Mo Collier (Spottie_Ottie_Dope), Tuesday, 25 June 2013 18:57 (twelve years ago)

neither does pharrell, but "twisted" was still rotting garbage

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 25 June 2013 18:58 (twelve years ago)

ugh true

some dude, Tuesday, 25 June 2013 18:59 (twelve years ago)

up next is our first song in the countdown that got a #1 vote

some dude, Tuesday, 25 June 2013 19:12 (twelve years ago)

#34. Kelis – “Young, Fresh n' New” (2001)
(148 points, 5 votes, one #1 vote)

some dude, Tuesday, 25 June 2013 19:15 (twelve years ago)

not a huge fan of the song but Kelis's vid game always on point

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=--8Yzm3w_iU

some dude, Tuesday, 25 June 2013 19:24 (twelve years ago)

'U Don't Have to Call' is my favourite Usher song although I only really know 8701 and a few other singles here and there.

'Young, Fresh 'n' New' is another great Kelis track.

I like HHNF but yeah 'Trill' is one of the weaker songs.

Gavin, Leeds, Tuesday, 25 June 2013 19:28 (twelve years ago)

up next, the first half of the poll's other tie

some dude, Tuesday, 25 June 2013 19:40 (twelve years ago)

#32. (tie) Beyonce – “Work it Out” (2002)
(150 points, 5 votes)

some dude, Tuesday, 25 June 2013 19:46 (twelve years ago)

not on Spotify, so let's have yet another video featuring Austin Powers:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PQLySgRW6y8

some dude, Tuesday, 25 June 2013 19:46 (twelve years ago)

god, what an abject failure of a song

some dude, Tuesday, 25 June 2013 19:48 (twelve years ago)

haha I was waiting for that

DJP, Tuesday, 25 June 2013 19:48 (twelve years ago)

wtf song is this

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 25 June 2013 19:51 (twelve years ago)

it's the piece of hot garbage that was Beyonce's debut solo single

DJP, Tuesday, 25 June 2013 19:53 (twelve years ago)

find it extremely strange that j0rd wasn't familiar with the "boys" remix or this

then again i forget "work it out" immediately after every time i hear it, so

emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Tuesday, 25 June 2013 19:53 (twelve years ago)

j0rdan got popular music under the christmas tree in 2003, right?

some dude, Tuesday, 25 June 2013 20:09 (twelve years ago)

no... i just don't remember those songs

i mean they're very minor in the careers of britney, beyonce and the neptunes. i don't think it's weird.

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 25 June 2013 20:10 (twelve years ago)

"Work It Out" is amazing as, like, the debut solo single of someone everyone knew was becoming a gigantic star, produced by the biggest hitmakers in pop, attached to a blockbuster summer movie, and it was so bad that it just vanished instantly.

some dude, Tuesday, 25 June 2013 20:12 (twelve years ago)

I remember when this first came out, my reaction was "holy shit, we are never going to hear from Beyonce again after this brick"

then "Crazy In Love" happened

DJP, Tuesday, 25 June 2013 20:14 (twelve years ago)

next song is the only track on the list actually produced by a non-Neptune, with Chad and Pharrell only co-writing and playing on it

some dude, Tuesday, 25 June 2013 20:15 (twelve years ago)

looking at wikipedia at least i don't remember any of her songs from that era that got zero pop radio play (work it out, fighting temptation, summertime)

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 25 June 2013 20:15 (twelve years ago)

haha okay maybe I wasn't quite that forceful: Beyonce - "Work It Out"

man it's valuable and embarrassing to have enough of a presence here that you can go back and look up what you said about things you now recognize as totally terrible

DJP, Tuesday, 25 June 2013 20:16 (twelve years ago)

#32. (tie) No Doubt – “Hella Good” (2001)
(150 points, 5 votes)

some dude, Tuesday, 25 June 2013 20:17 (twelve years ago)

haha i was just surprised is all, man. i was in canada when "work it out" came out and that video was on muchmusic all the time for some reason

hella xposts to j0rd

emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Tuesday, 25 June 2013 20:17 (twelve years ago)

The dirtiest funk to hit the charts since..."Bad Boy 4 Life"...

this is an amazing statement fo ra number of different reasons

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 25 June 2013 20:17 (twelve years ago)

"hella good" is a good radio jam but yeah in no way would i put it up with the best neps stuff

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 25 June 2013 20:18 (twelve years ago)

the Fighting Temptations singles were also weak-ass bricks but on some level not remotely as high profile as "Work It Out," video definitely was all over the place

some dude, Tuesday, 25 June 2013 20:18 (twelve years ago)

i can't believe at one point Beyonce was forced to make a record with Free from 106 & Park

some dude, Tuesday, 25 June 2013 20:21 (twelve years ago)

hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 25 June 2013 20:22 (twelve years ago)

"work it out" is pretty cool i think but i can't imagine it was the first solo single of her career, just seems like an obvious disaster

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 25 June 2013 20:28 (twelve years ago)

haha xxp

Shock G Mo Collier (Spottie_Ottie_Dope), Tuesday, 25 June 2013 20:28 (twelve years ago)

in this video goldmember dances over the fartiest tuba farts that ever farted and i can't tell if it's intentional

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 25 June 2013 20:30 (twelve years ago)

it would be intentional if it was Fat Bastard

some dude, Tuesday, 25 June 2013 20:31 (twelve years ago)

recording with Free, dancing with Dr. Evil, singing on 50 Cent's shelved first album...B really had to pay her dues

some dude, Tuesday, 25 June 2013 20:34 (twelve years ago)

some dude, Tuesday, 25 June 2013 20:38 (twelve years ago)

it was funny a while back when The-Dream tried to say in an interview that he was the first person to have Jay and B guest on the same album, and i was like nahh Usher did that, Missy did that...fucking AMIL DID THAT!

some dude, Tuesday, 25 June 2013 20:40 (twelve years ago)

hahah

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 25 June 2013 20:41 (twelve years ago)

alright, last song of the day comin' up

some dude, Tuesday, 25 June 2013 20:48 (twelve years ago)

funny ?uestlove story about this song; http://pitchfork.com/features/5-10-15-20/8474-5-10-15-20-uestlove/

some dude, Tuesday, 25 June 2013 20:48 (twelve years ago)

haha i love this one so much

emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Tuesday, 25 June 2013 20:52 (twelve years ago)

that song is really the last time Jay sounded like he was having a ton of fun just being an asshole

some dude, Tuesday, 25 June 2013 21:06 (twelve years ago)

that's an interesting idea

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 25 June 2013 21:07 (twelve years ago)

Questlove story is so great.

Shock G Mo Collier (Spottie_Ottie_Dope), Tuesday, 25 June 2013 21:18 (twelve years ago)

The synth on La La La is very meaty. Didn't vote for that track but do have love for it.

Shock G Mo Collier (Spottie_Ottie_Dope), Tuesday, 25 June 2013 22:24 (twelve years ago)

yeah i have a post somewhere about how circa '02 their drums were getting kind of thin and plinky but with these fat bass synth lines that made the tracks feel like teetering top-heavy things, "La La La" and "N***a Please" being the classic examples

some dude, Tuesday, 25 June 2013 22:26 (twelve years ago)

When they do drums right they have some of the snappiest snares in pop music. Them and like Rich Harrison.

Shock G Mo Collier (Spottie_Ottie_Dope), Tuesday, 25 June 2013 22:44 (twelve years ago)

yeah the shit just cuts through so beautifully

some dude, Tuesday, 25 June 2013 22:50 (twelve years ago)

"N***a Please" is an amaizng and underrated track IMO.

I will always have love for "Got Your Money" because it reminds me of stalking the streets of Sydney 10 years ago with my friend Natasha, looking for a good place to dance. We passed this club just as this started up and immediately knew we'd found what we were looking for, it was then followed straightaway by "Party Up (Up In Here)" and "Get Low" and it all felt like coming home.

That said I'm highly susceptible to the argument that their best straight disco-funk groove was actually their remix of Backstreet Boys' "The Call".

Tim F, Tuesday, 25 June 2013 23:46 (twelve years ago)

i didn't vote but had i "la la la" would've been top 5. i just have an immediate, woozy reaction to that bass synth

emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Tuesday, 25 June 2013 23:53 (twelve years ago)

maybe it's for the best bc i would've ended up voting for n.e.r.d songs

emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Tuesday, 25 June 2013 23:56 (twelve years ago)

no spoilers but tbh n.e.r.d. could've used a far greater presence here

some dude, Wednesday, 26 June 2013 00:00 (twelve years ago)

i would've voted for n.e.r.d songs from fly or die

emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Wednesday, 26 June 2013 00:15 (twelve years ago)

haha i think i probably voted for more n.e.r.d songs that kelis ones

Lamp, Wednesday, 26 June 2013 00:16 (twelve years ago)

the nostalgic part of me was tempted to vote for 'hella good' - it was one of the long list of trax i c+p'd from wikipedia - but then i listened to it again and was really underwhelmed.

Lamp, Wednesday, 26 June 2013 00:21 (twelve years ago)

yeah i had 4 N.E.R.D. tracks to 1 Kelis on my ballot.

some dude, Wednesday, 26 June 2013 00:39 (twelve years ago)

wtf the Beyonce and Britney picks... good god. If "Girlfriend" doesn't make the cut over these then I just fucking give up.

"La La La" is one of my favorites for that whole decade.

billstevejim, Wednesday, 26 June 2013 02:24 (twelve years ago)

this poll is fun, wish i had bad time to make a ballot.
cool to see boys coed remix place, so so funky.

brimstead, Wednesday, 26 June 2013 02:34 (twelve years ago)

had had, not had bad.

brimstead, Wednesday, 26 June 2013 02:35 (twelve years ago)

Pretty sure Girlfriend will place pretty high xxp

Shock G Mo Collier (Spottie_Ottie_Dope), Wednesday, 26 June 2013 02:38 (twelve years ago)

tbf, the songs today only got 3-5 votes, which is why i contemplated only doing a top 30. but i thought it'd be fun to start with some of these quirkier choices in the 30s, as it'll be nothing but wall to wall smash hits soon enough.

some dude, Wednesday, 26 June 2013 02:43 (twelve years ago)

That's what I figured. Pretty strange group of minor tracks today, really.

"hot" sounds like scraping your finger across a record player needle
pusha, rosco and boo bonic are all greasy on this
all three of them approach the beat with at a slightly different tempo, ride or don't ride the beat in a unique way

there's a post on ilm from ten fuckin years ago where i predict that rosco is going to drop a classic and outsell the first clipse lp.

FREE ROSCO P. COLDCHAIN

dylannn, Wednesday, 26 June 2013 06:35 (twelve years ago)

listening to the small amount of recorded rosco material, i can see why i was so bullish on rosco c.2003. he was such a nice lyricist, like combination of polished street rappers in roc-a-fella second string style and vocab list almost famous late 90s peripheral new york crew but with more insight and more humorless credibility. he had a good feel for how his voice sounded and what he could do with it.

i did! sorry, just forgot to note it in the poll entry. HOWEVER, in re-examining its point total, I did notice that I actually had it 1 point lower than it should be, which means it is now no longer tied for #38 with "Flashback." here is the corrected entry, with recap of all of yesterday's entries:

#31. Jay-Z – “La-La-La (Excuse Me Again)” (2003)
(160 points, 5 votes)
#32. (tie) No Doubt – “Hella Good” (2001)
(150 points, 5 votes)
#32. (tie) Beyonce – “Work it Out” (2002)
(150 points, 5 votes)
#34. Kelis – “Young, Fresh & New” (2001)
(148 points, 5 votes, one #1 vote)
#35. Usher – “U Don’t Have To Call” (2001)
(145 points, 5 votes)
#36. Clipse – “Trill” (2006)

#37. Rosco P. Coldchain f/ Pharrell, Pusha T and Boo-Bonic – “Hot” (2003)

#30. Clipse f/ Pharrell – “Mr. Me Too” (2006)
(167 points, 6 votes)

some dude, Wednesday, 26 June 2013 10:56 (twelve years ago)

(174 points, 6 votes)

some dude, Wednesday, 26 June 2013 11:43 (twelve years ago)

looking at wikipedia at least i don't remember any of her songs from that era that got zero pop radio play (work it out, fighting temptation, summertime)

― J0rdan S., Tuesday, 25 June 2013

u should check the ghostface remix of "summertime", it's very sweet. his verse has a real personal feel, like he jacked it for a mixtape cut "i keep hearing this song in my head over & over, it's crazy"

zvookster, Wednesday, 26 June 2013 12:04 (twelve years ago)

"boys" was really big in the uk & ireland, i think it's great

zvookster, Wednesday, 26 June 2013 12:06 (twelve years ago)

the video was on constant rotation & u still see it today on the reg

zvookster, Wednesday, 26 June 2013 12:07 (twelve years ago)

I have this grave fear that "Cross The Border" won't make it. I won't be able to sleep tonight, gnawing my fingernails in worry.

Tim F, Wednesday, 26 June 2013 12:25 (twelve years ago)

the next entry is another song that annoyingly is not on Spotify...

some dude, Wednesday, 26 June 2013 12:37 (twelve years ago)

#28. Kelis f/ Pusha T – “Popular Thug” (2001)
(183 points, 6 votes)

AND i can only find the Nas version on YouTube!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F15hVKrSAZk

some dude, Wednesday, 26 June 2013 12:39 (twelve years ago)

excellent song!

Tim F, Wednesday, 26 June 2013 12:40 (twelve years ago)

is Nas the only rapper that ever namedropped Alexander McQueen while he was alive?

some dude, Wednesday, 26 June 2013 12:40 (twelve years ago)

i've always loved "mr. me too"... i think the buzziness is a great little flip of the minimal neptunes aesthetic and all the lyrics are truly sneering

and really the only catchy chorus on HHNF besides "wamp wamp" which is so dumb

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 26 June 2013 13:00 (twelve years ago)

"senorita" is cool but also really kinda corny

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 26 June 2013 13:01 (twelve years ago)

looks like the pusha version of "popular thug" isn't on youtube or spotify

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 26 June 2013 13:02 (twelve years ago)

Ha, I love Wamp Wamp. It's dumb but brilliantly so.

Deafening silence (DL), Wednesday, 26 June 2013 14:09 (twelve years ago)

#27. Busta Rhymes f/ P. Diddy and Pharrell – “Pass The Courvoisier” (2002)
(197 points, 7 votes, one #1 vote)

some dude, Wednesday, 26 June 2013 14:55 (twelve years ago)

i've always adored this song

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 26 June 2013 14:59 (twelve years ago)

it has so many fantastic and entertaining elements to it, but for some reason it's always felt like less than the sum of its parts to me

some dude, Wednesday, 26 June 2013 15:04 (twelve years ago)

yeah... i think this is a good place for it. it's a great party song but not nearly as mindblowing as their best stuff

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 26 June 2013 15:10 (twelve years ago)

yeah exactly. next song is MY #1...

some dude, Wednesday, 26 June 2013 15:14 (twelve years ago)

#26. Kelis – “Get Along With You” (1999)
(203 points, 6 votes, one #1 vote)

some dude, Wednesday, 26 June 2013 15:15 (twelve years ago)

REALLY??

this is a good song though

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 26 June 2013 15:19 (twelve years ago)

yes really!

some dude, Wednesday, 26 June 2013 15:27 (twelve years ago)

i have vivid memories of seeing that weird haunting "Get Along With You" video on MTV late at night a few times during my senior year of high school, having no idea who Kelis or the Neptunes were (somehow i totally missed "Caught Out There" at the time) and being completely entranced.

some dude, Wednesday, 26 June 2013 15:34 (twelve years ago)

#25. Clipse f/ Slim Thug – “Wamp Wamp (What It Do)” (2006)
(212 points, 8 votes)

some dude, Wednesday, 26 June 2013 15:35 (twelve years ago)

#30. Clipse f/ Pharrell – “Mr. Me Too” (2006)
My favorite thing about this beat is that fuzz that pans back and forth for the whole song.

#29. Justin Timberlake – “Senorita” (2002)
Agree with j0rdan re corny but I think it sits just on the right side of corny. The call & response section is the cheese but it was also a blast on the dance floor because of it. I think the horn accents really pull everything together. This is filed under the awesome drum sound category too. There's some little percussive touches that really fill out the sound. Warm and snappy all at once.

Shock G Mo Collier (Spottie_Ottie_Dope), Wednesday, 26 June 2013 15:37 (twelve years ago)

i still think it's hilarious that there was an epic battle of wills between Clipse and Foxy Brown over who would get to use this stupid beat on a post-stardom flop single.

some dude, Wednesday, 26 June 2013 15:38 (twelve years ago)

xpost obv

some dude, Wednesday, 26 June 2013 15:38 (twelve years ago)

"wamp wamp" is a good club song but a really unmemorable beat and i'm embarrassed to even recite the chorus in my head

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 26 June 2013 15:38 (twelve years ago)

i know slim thug says "wamp wamp" and then he says "what it do what it do" but i can't quite recall the parts that aren't in the title

some dude, Wednesday, 26 June 2013 15:44 (twelve years ago)

has it ever even been played in a club? maybe some indie karaoke nights?

some dude, Wednesday, 26 June 2013 15:44 (twelve years ago)

that's the entire chorus xp

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 26 June 2013 15:44 (twelve years ago)

haha wait i forgot about the entire slim thug part before that. that part is actually okay!

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 26 June 2013 15:45 (twelve years ago)

#24. Snoop Dogg f/ Pharrell – “Beautiful” (2002)

yessssss

emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Wednesday, 26 June 2013 16:04 (twelve years ago)

i like that "Blurred Lines" brought back the 'loop of Pharrell saying some goofy phrase is part of the beat' thing of "Beautiful"

some dude, Wednesday, 26 June 2013 16:05 (twelve years ago)

#23. Mystikal f/ Nivea – “Danger (Been So Long)” (2000)

some dude, Wednesday, 26 June 2013 16:41 (twelve years ago)

#22. Gwen Stefani – “Hollaback Girl” (2004)
(227 points, 7 votes, one #1 vote)

some dude, Wednesday, 26 June 2013 16:41 (twelve years ago)

ah both of those were top 10 for me. "danger" is my fav mystikal/neps track for sure, that's one that sorta more than the sum to me. mystikal's flow on that entire song is crazy... the groove is very understated by the neps standards (even a lot of their "minimal" stuff is pretty showy) and mystikal kinda just scribbles all over it. but he still stays in the pocket? idk, that track is just crazy to me.

"beautiful" is just so amazing, that song is like a cool shower or something. also that video, man, what a classic. i still yearn to go to rio simply because of this video. also snoop in that chiefs jersey looked so raw.

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 26 June 2013 16:43 (twelve years ago)

My no.1, I lllove it

Ismael Klata, Wednesday, 26 June 2013 16:44 (twelve years ago)

"hollaback girl" is cool for what it is. that's not something that hits me when i think about the neps tho.

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 26 June 2013 16:44 (twelve years ago)

my jaw dropped in horror the first time i heard it on the radio

some dude, Wednesday, 26 June 2013 16:49 (twelve years ago)

there are few gwen stefani songs i ever need to hear again and that's probably not one of them

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 26 June 2013 16:49 (twelve years ago)

but yeah rapping-wise "Danger" is amazing. prob the best song i left off my ballot.

some dude, Wednesday, 26 June 2013 16:50 (twelve years ago)

ok, doing one more song for today before i go off to work

some dude, Wednesday, 26 June 2013 16:59 (twelve years ago)

#21. N.O.R.E. f/ Pharrell – “Nothin’” (2002)
(231 points, 8 votes)

some dude, Wednesday, 26 June 2013 17:00 (twelve years ago)

this was the track that made me go "ok, pharrell, you're officially putting too many words in your chorus, 'she's a haggler naw i'm not taggin' her' is not catchy."

some dude, Wednesday, 26 June 2013 17:01 (twelve years ago)

yeah that line is kinda :-|

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 26 June 2013 17:02 (twelve years ago)

it's pretty awesome tho that the cosmos aligned so that weirdos like nore and mystikal could work with the neptunes

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 26 June 2013 17:04 (twelve years ago)

'pass the courvoisier part II' was my no.1 vote not really interested in deep-thinking why its soundtrack throw-off hedonism works so well but its just straight up one of my favorite songs, the sort of thing that makes me happier just for having heard it, also i really like video

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JAYXRtNxsGA

Lamp, Wednesday, 26 June 2013 18:03 (twelve years ago)

damn so many good tracks here

the late great, Wednesday, 26 June 2013 18:11 (twelve years ago)

damn! Pass the Courvoisier is beautiful

g simmel, Wednesday, 26 June 2013 19:48 (twelve years ago)

This stretch has been awesome: "Pass The Courvoisier", "Get Along With You", "Beautiful", "Danger" and "Nothin" are all cold classics in my book.

Tim F, Wednesday, 26 June 2013 20:13 (twelve years ago)

#27. Busta Rhymes f/ P. Diddy and Pharrell – “Pass The Courvoisier” (2002)
Totally failed to vote for this. Duh. Busta had a run of incredible videos, I think they need a poll.

#26. Kelis – “Get Along With You” (1999)
Hadnt ever paid attention to this but this sounds really gorgeous and haunting, rise and fall. Perfect drums.

#25. Clipse f/ Slim Thug – “Wamp Wamp (What It Do)” (2006)
Spoon on a trash can lid? Ping pong ball? All kinds of weird stuff thrown together in there. Bagpipes, steel drums. Slim is perfect for the hook.

#24. Snoop Dogg f/ Pharrell – “Beautiful” (2002)
I thought this would place much higher so put it kinda far down on my ballot.

#23. Mystikal f/ Nivea – “Danger (Been So Long)” (2000)
Beat is cool n all but this is Mystikals show like EVERYONE my first year would yell DAAANGER at any given time. Even still when I hear the word I blurt it out in my head.

#22. Gwen Stefani – “Hollaback Girl” (2004)
Uh that little acoustic riff fffuuuuuuu. not a fan. waste of good horns

#21. N.O.R.E. f/ Pharrell – “Nothin’” (2002)
top 10 for me, I dream of that pulsing bass. nore is a weird rapper

I feel like some serious heat is gonna miss the top 40

some dude, Thursday, 27 June 2013 10:05 (twelve years ago)

The small number of voters actually makes this more entertainingly unpredictable because there's not enough for a strong consensus to emerge. I'm sure many of my favourites don't have much support elsewhere and some of the Top 20 will surprise me.

Deafening silence (DL), Thursday, 27 June 2013 10:09 (twelve years ago)

#21. N.O.R.E. f/ Pharrell – “Nothin’” (2002)
(231 points, 8 votes)

i was sloppy about noting which songs had #1 votes earlier, have now given "I Ain't Heard of That" and "Senorita" credit for their #1 votes, which i did not initially.

ok, onto the top 20!

some dude, Thursday, 27 June 2013 10:31 (twelve years ago)

#20. Britney Spears – “I’m A Slave 4 U” (2001)
(233 points, 8 votes)

some dude, Thursday, 27 June 2013 10:32 (twelve years ago)

Half of voters is pretty much a consensus pick, we got there pretty quickly

Ismael Klata, Thursday, 27 June 2013 11:19 (twelve years ago)

Can I get a TOO LOW?

Jeff W, Thursday, 27 June 2013 11:21 (twelve years ago)

well, we ended up with 19 voters, but we'll be at more than half of that in a few entries.

my eyes have always kinda glazed over when "I'm A Slave 4 U" comes on, but i like how it feels like it has a different rhythmic engine from almost all their other stuff up to that point, unique groove. xp

some dude, Thursday, 27 June 2013 11:23 (twelve years ago)

#19. Snoop Dogg f/ Justin Timberlake and Charlie Wilson – “Signs” (2004)
(237 points, 7 votes)

some dude, Thursday, 27 June 2013 11:23 (twelve years ago)

"signs" is pretty good but i don't think i voted for it, always paled in comparison to "beautiful" for me

"slave 4 u" is dope tho

J0rdan S., Thursday, 27 June 2013 12:46 (twelve years ago)

see i always felt like "Signs" was by far the best of the Snoop/Neptunes singles, and that it was a tragedy that it kinda flopped after "Let's Get Blown" undeservingly took the "Drop It Like It's Hot" follow-up spot and there was maybe some post-Super Bowl JT backlash on urban radio.

some dude, Thursday, 27 June 2013 12:56 (twelve years ago)

OK, gonna do one more this morning and then go to band practice, will resume the countdown in the afternoon...

J0rdan S., Thursday, 27 June 2013 17:57 (twelve years ago)

what doesn't make sense about "shake ya ass but watch yourself"? 2000 era Mystikal was all about caution. danger! danger!

some dude, Thursday, 27 June 2013 18:02 (twelve years ago)

Its all about Pharrell's smooth pre-chorus work that balances the track out perfectly. just a great use of tension and release

Shock G Mo Collier (Spottie_Ottie_Dope), Thursday, 27 June 2013 18:05 (twelve years ago)

i remember that video was the first time i was like "who the hell is this guy with the trucker hat and the high voice? this is crazy." i don't think it even registered for a while that it was the same guy as on Jay-Z's new single because he wasn't in the "I Just Wanna Love U" video.

some dude, Thursday, 27 June 2013 18:07 (twelve years ago)

as embarrassing as Pitchfork's jokey early 00s treatment of rap was, it still cracks me up to remember the headline "Mystikal announces tourdates" with the subheader "stop your cryin', heifer"

some dude, Thursday, 27 June 2013 18:17 (twelve years ago)

heading into a stretch of songs i fucking adore right now:

some dude, Thursday, 27 June 2013 18:17 (twelve years ago)

I should note that 5 ballots specified the remix featuring Nelly. i've never really dug it that much, personally, though, feel like the song was perfect to begin with and Nelly didn't quite have the right vibe for it.

some dude, Thursday, 27 June 2013 18:22 (twelve years ago)

Such a tune

Shock G Mo Collier (Spottie_Ottie_Dope), Thursday, 27 June 2013 18:27 (twelve years ago)

that song is so fucking good

J0rdan S., Thursday, 27 June 2013 18:28 (twelve years ago)

i think pharrell mentioned specifically in nabisco's nymag piece that "shake ya ass" was one of the songs where he thought he was just laying reference vocals for the chorus but then the artist ended up keeping them on

J0rdan S., Thursday, 27 June 2013 18:29 (twelve years ago)

yeah...that kind of thing is funny to think about because, sometimes female singers did the melodic hooks he wrote, but almost never guys (other than, like, whoever the hell Marc Dorsey was that did "Luv U Better") because, i mean, who the hell else would sing like Pharrell? barely anyone else was doing any falsetto at all when he first started making hits.

some dude, Thursday, 27 June 2013 18:34 (twelve years ago)

i think he said they initially wanted charlie wilson on that

J0rdan S., Thursday, 27 June 2013 18:36 (twelve years ago)

J0rdan S., Thursday, 27 June 2013 19:17 (twelve years ago)

I've been dipping in and out of this thread without commenting much but I gotta say I love the last three and "Frontin'" made me dislike Pharrell's falsetto.

A deeper shade of lol (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 27 June 2013 19:20 (twelve years ago)

'Frontin'' is great but the Jamie Cullum version kind of sullied it a bit for me.

haha I was going to post the Jamie Cullum version but I waited too long to pull the trigger

DJP, Thursday, 27 June 2013 19:40 (twelve years ago)

oh lord yeah i think i managed to successfully avoid that after hearing it for 30 seconds once, so it hasn't tarnished the song at all for me

some dude, Thursday, 27 June 2013 19:42 (twelve years ago)

next song surprised me by hanging in the top 10 for much of the early voting, until it finally got crowded out toward the end.

some dude, Thursday, 27 June 2013 19:48 (twelve years ago)

#14. Beenie Man f/ Mya – “Girls Dem Sugar” (2000)
(336 points, 9 votes, one #1 vote)

some dude, Thursday, 27 June 2013 19:48 (twelve years ago)

my #1

J0rdan S., Thursday, 27 June 2013 20:01 (twelve years ago)

what an utterly perfect song

J0rdan S., Thursday, 27 June 2013 20:04 (twelve years ago)

Dem Sugar is a pretty perfect song. Bought that album on the strength of that song and never was able to get through much of the rest of it. Everything else was such a let down.

Shock G Mo Collier (Spottie_Ottie_Dope), Thursday, 27 June 2013 20:25 (twelve years ago)

the "sim-simma!" voice is another one where it's funny to realize in retrospect that it was Pharrell and not Beenie Man or some other dancehall guy

some dude, Thursday, 27 June 2013 20:31 (twelve years ago)

#13. Clipse – “When The Last Time” (2002)
(340 points, 10 votes, one #1 vote)

some dude, Thursday, 27 June 2013 20:33 (twelve years ago)

pusha t's rapping on that song is unnecessarily good for being the token club song

J0rdan S., Thursday, 27 June 2013 20:37 (twelve years ago)

One of the best drops ever in all of music

Shock G Mo Collier (Spottie_Ottie_Dope), Thursday, 27 June 2013 20:38 (twelve years ago)

yeah Pusha was Fabolous-level great at lyrical radio songs for a minute (which i'm in the minority of thinking was pretty much his ceiling)

some dude, Thursday, 27 June 2013 20:40 (twelve years ago)

inadvertently memorized "when the last time" bc i put it on a mix once and it was always the first thing i wanted to hear when i got in my car

emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Thursday, 27 June 2013 21:01 (twelve years ago)

next one kinda surprised me with how low it is, before the poll started I assumed it a lock for the top 10 and a possible #1...

some dude, Thursday, 27 June 2013 21:09 (twelve years ago)

#12. Clipse – “Grindin’” (2002)
(343 points, 11 votes)

Wow way too low

Shock G Mo Collier (Spottie_Ottie_Dope), Thursday, 27 June 2013 21:12 (twelve years ago)

ikr

some dude, Thursday, 27 June 2013 21:12 (twelve years ago)

Love how the hook is more or less just a new noise introduced and one word repeated a few times and a sigh.

Shock G Mo Collier (Spottie_Ottie_Dope), Thursday, 27 June 2013 21:16 (twelve years ago)

damn

emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Thursday, 27 June 2013 21:17 (twelve years ago)

yeah I should have voted in this

DJP, Thursday, 27 June 2013 21:17 (twelve years ago)

i remember the first time i saw the video on Rap City, i was in a hotel room the only time i traveled for spring break -- i was like 'wow the Neptunes are really pushing their luck with willfully weird beats, these guys are not going to get on the radio with this shit.' by the time summer rolled around it was already starting to feel like a classic.

some dude, Thursday, 27 June 2013 21:18 (twelve years ago)

ha, first time I saw the video I went "OMG THIS IS THE GREATEST FUCKING THING EVER MORE MORE MORE OF THIS"

DJP, Thursday, 27 June 2013 21:19 (twelve years ago)

sooo many kids in school would hammer this beat out on desks or tables just trying to pass the time. it was omnipresent.

J0rdan S., Thursday, 27 June 2013 21:23 (twelve years ago)

great song, amazing raps

the remixes are awesome too

it's impossible not to sound amazing on this beat

J0rdan S., Thursday, 27 June 2013 21:23 (twelve years ago)

lol yes crooked i had a great freestyle over this on the wake up show one time

zvookster, Thursday, 27 June 2013 21:29 (twelve years ago)

the 89 Ford Taurus i was driving in 2002 had these really loud automatic locks that i would click up and down in time to the drums when "Grindin'" came on the radio and i was, like, bored at a red light or something. JUD-JUD, JUD-JUD.

some dude, Thursday, 27 June 2013 21:30 (twelve years ago)

OK, one more for today, and then we'll be back in the morning to finish out the top 10...

some dude, Thursday, 27 June 2013 21:45 (twelve years ago)

(357 points, 10 votes, one #1 vote)

some dude, Thursday, 27 June 2013 21:46 (twelve years ago)

Wow. It's a mark of how strong their catalogue is that it is even possible for these amazing songs to place so low.

Tim F, Thursday, 27 June 2013 21:49 (twelve years ago)

First time I heard this was at a Foot Locker by the Santa Monica pier. Was about to walk out when the song kicked in. I remember one of the employees walking over and turning it way up. Listened to the whole thing standing by the the exit then asked what it was then promptly walked across the street to a random music shop and bought Lord Willin.

Shock G Mo Collier (Spottie_Ottie_Dope), Thursday, 27 June 2013 21:58 (twelve years ago)

"Hot in herre" remains the song that has delivered me more dancefloor joy than just about any other. It was a staple at my house parties well into 2003.

Tim F, Thursday, 27 June 2013 22:03 (twelve years ago)

Kinda wanted to hate Hot In Here when it got big cos I was entering a short-stinted REAL HIP-HOP phase, but I could never throw salt at it.

Shock G Mo Collier (Spottie_Ottie_Dope), Thursday, 27 June 2013 22:04 (twelve years ago)

xp Yes it was def a dancefloor staple for a long time, well into 2004 ime

Shock G Mo Collier (Spottie_Ottie_Dope), Thursday, 27 June 2013 22:05 (twelve years ago)

for some reason i was never a huge "hot in herre" person

J0rdan S., Thursday, 27 June 2013 22:08 (twelve years ago)

really good groove though, and it doesn't sound as rinky-dink as some of their other stuff

J0rdan S., Thursday, 27 June 2013 22:09 (twelve years ago)

Aged well for sure.

Shock G Mo Collier (Spottie_Ottie_Dope), Thursday, 27 June 2013 22:11 (twelve years ago)

i have fond memories of the time i saw Ray Lewis rap the entirety of "Hot In Herre" at a Ravens event at a local club

some dude, Thursday, 27 June 2013 22:33 (twelve years ago)

ha cool

Shock G Mo Collier (Spottie_Ottie_Dope), Thursday, 27 June 2013 22:36 (twelve years ago)

― Tim F, Thursday, June 27, 2013 10:03 PM (Yesterday)

word. i didn't even vote for this. to this day it's a great peak of the night club record, when you're drunk enough to be into anything but hearing that slightly ominous intro gives you a good euphoric rush and being able to move into the girl you think might be feeling you, sing along with why you are the bar if you ain't poppin the bottles / what good is all the fame if you ain't fuckin the models.

dylannn, Friday, 28 June 2013 06:26 (twelve years ago)

Not so much a particular phrase, but I've had a problem with it in particular since one day...
I was at my friend Stephen's house. He was flipping through channels and the song came on. His daughter started singing along; she's 4. She ran out of the room, and we were like "what?". She came running back in the room totally buck-naked.

Actually, I can't quite put my finger on why I dislike the lyrics so much; it's a mix of not-liking-the-women-as-objects-ness of it and the amazement-at-how-juvenile it is. But that's just my opinion, and my opinions are 99% of the time totally retarded wrong.

― nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, March 4, 2003 6:56 PM (10 years ago)

sums up why i love it

#10. Jay-Z f/ Pharrell – “I Just Wanna Love U (Give It 2 Me)” (2000)
(359 points, 12 votes)

some dude, Friday, 28 June 2013 10:36 (twelve years ago)

tiga's cover of 'hot in herre' too, esp w/ the video. tho this is prob not the place to post it.

expected 'i just wanna love u' to be top 5.

So: The Answers (or something), Friday, 28 June 2013 11:14 (twelve years ago)

yeah that's the song i was the most worried for the whole time, but by the end i was just happy it was in the top 10 :/

^^ yessss

k3vin k., Friday, 28 June 2013 11:34 (twelve years ago)

the fact that they added a female R&B singer sensually crooning "what what, what what" in the background will never not be hilarious

some dude, Friday, 28 June 2013 12:08 (twelve years ago)

#8. Mystikal – “Bouncin’ Back (Bumpin’ Me Against The Wall)” (2002)
(366 points, 10 votes, one #1 vote)

some dude, Friday, 28 June 2013 12:28 (twelve years ago)

gonna be working and posting the rest of the top 10 for most of the day, so i won't update the Spotify playlist anymore until tonight.

some dude, Friday, 28 June 2013 12:35 (twelve years ago)

i kinda go back and forth on how i feel about "i just wanna luv u" (another kinda weird hook) but some of jay's best rapping is on that

J0rdan S., Friday, 28 June 2013 12:36 (twelve years ago)

"superthug" is just wild, i can't believe a song like that was even conceived

on "bouncin back" there are points where mystikal is barely even rapping, i don't know how they ever played that on the radio let alone let it become a smash

J0rdan S., Friday, 28 June 2013 12:37 (twelve years ago)

"I Just Wanna Love U" chorus is the BEST

some dude, Friday, 28 June 2013 12:42 (twelve years ago)

kinda regret not voting in this, stunned 'grindin' (which would've probably been my #1) and 'hot in herre' and to a lesser extent 'when the last time' didn't make top ten though i guess when the peaks are this high some ridiculously great stuff will miss out. strong ditto to 'hot in herre's club context being necessary to fully getting it, i was actually kinda underwhelmed by it initially and then i heard it in a club and all was revealed (grandmaster flash was djing weirdly enough). when ppl debated neptunes vs timbaland at the time i leaned strongly timbaland but the neptunes stuff actually sounds fresher to me now, maybe it's nostalgia for what was a really good time for pop and hip-hop radio (and the time when there was a ton of crossover between the two) and maybe it's colored by post-peak sub-par neptunes and pharell stuff being so much easier to ignore and write off than w/ timbaland (though 'blurred lines' being so much better than anything on 20/20 experience - and i like 20/20 experience - feels like one hell of a late goal).

xpost Guessing the final 3 are "Rock Your Body", "Got Your Money" and "Like I Love You", in some order.

Yay for "Southern Hospitality", amazing tune. Boo for all my favourite tunes that didn't make it, like "The Call (Neptunes Remix)", "Cross The Border", "Roller Rink" and "Ego".

man i've probably said this a million times by now but my favorite thing about "i just wanna love u" is how bc of the video i had like five or six conversations in middle school that centered around the question "omg jay can sing?!?!?!"

i love "Am I High" so much that i wish i'd given it a vote to get it, or any N.E.R.D. at all, into the top 40. great backing vox by John from Spymob on that song, too.

some dude, Friday, 28 June 2013 17:52 (twelve years ago)

Thanks to Al (and to our absent friend, V79). I think this is the closest I've ever been to the hivemind on any of these artist polls.

Trill defense:
1. It's catchy
2. Synth!
3. Lyrics = hilarious ftb http://www.petsathome.com/wcsstore/ConsumerDirectStorefrontAssetStore/images/products/large/1202.jpg

J0rdan S., Saturday, 29 June 2013 01:27 (twelve years ago)

the way the bass & drums play off each other on "wait a minute" is so dope

J0rdan S., Saturday, 29 June 2013 01:28 (twelve years ago)

as any rapper been used as a punchline in other rap songs in a funny but non-derogatory way than bow wow?

J0rdan S., Saturday, 29 June 2013 01:29 (twelve years ago)

some dude, Saturday, 29 June 2013 01:52 (twelve years ago)

i love "Am I High" so much that i wish i'd given it a vote to get it, or any N.E.R.D. at all, into the top 40.

top 60 isn't bad. i never hear anyone rep for this song or even acknowledge it, so just that in itself is a pleasure.

billstevejim, Saturday, 29 June 2013 05:35 (twelve years ago)

just curious if anyone else vote for Justin "Nothin' Else"? (similarly rarely acknowledged even on ILM)

billstevejim, Saturday, 29 June 2013 05:44 (twelve years ago)

real answer prob Hammer

J0rdan S., Saturday, 29 June 2013 05:48 (twelve years ago)

Am I High is one of the few nerd tracks I like, and it's lush.

Shock G Mo Collier (Spottie_Ottie_Dope), Saturday, 29 June 2013 06:08 (twelve years ago)

malice's verse on WHTTB is like the greatest thing ever. utterly sinister, almost evil

k3vin k., Saturday, 29 June 2013 06:12 (twelve years ago)

one other person voted for "Nothin' Else," in the low 20s.

some dude, Saturday, 29 June 2013 10:00 (twelve years ago)

how about "Take It from Here"?

g simmel, Saturday, 29 June 2013 11:18 (twelve years ago)

u were the only voter for that.

i mean, about half of the 160 songs that received a vote got only 1 vote, so if you don't see it in the top 60, you were probably on your own.

some dude, Saturday, 29 June 2013 11:53 (twelve years ago)

ok

a great list anyway. thank you for doing this some dude

g simmel, Saturday, 29 June 2013 12:32 (twelve years ago)

five years pass...

this was the track that made me go "ok, pharrell, you're officially putting too many words in your chorus, 'she's a haggler naw i'm not taggin' her' is not catchy."
