okay, I'm reloaded!
I received 21 ballots, 12 of which also included top 5 albums lists (there was zero consensus on the other subpoll to have any results).
― Some-D (some dude), Tuesday, 30 July 2013 11:04 (twelve years ago)

so no one had black album or AG in their top 5? awesome but weird
― k3vin k., Tuesday, 30 July 2013 11:59 (twelve years ago)
Sometimes I feel bad about being so down on The Black Album, but jesus the number of people I've met who think it was the point in time at which to start paying attention to jigga is just i don't know.
― Tim F, Tuesday, 30 July 2013 12:05 (twelve years ago)
i know, right!
the top 2 was pretty close, each was on every single voter's ballot

― Some-D (some dude), Tuesday, 30 July 2013 12:11 (twelve years ago)
hopefully will have the tracks counted in time to start that countdown sometime today, but it'll be at least a couple hours.
at the end of the poll i'll also have tracks point totals for each album, which i think will be interesting to compare with the albums poll results.
― Some-D (some dude), Tuesday, 30 July 2013 12:13 (twelve years ago)
Basically any of RD, Vol 1, Vol 2, Vol 3 or The Blueprint I listen to I think "this is my favourite" while it's playing, except that the tracks on Vol 3 I love seem so like the most amazing music in the world that it puts it over the edge for me slightly.
Although maybe what I want most of all is an entire album of "Where I'm From".
― Tim F, Tuesday, 30 July 2013 12:19 (twelve years ago)
Wow v surprised at zero votes for the Black Album!
― caek da killa (Spottie_Ottie_Dope), Tuesday, 30 July 2013 15:49 (twelve years ago)
yeah. i think that's a pretty good indication of how awesome the tracks results are going to be. hopefully i'll be done tallying in the next couple hours.
― Some-D (some dude), Tuesday, 30 July 2013 16:07 (twelve years ago)
ok, y'all ready? gonna do the top 40, with the first 10 today.
― Some-D (some dude), Tuesday, 30 July 2013 19:11 (twelve years ago)
A note about the results: in any situation where a song has a remix or sequel and both versions received votes, the votes were only counted together if each version of the song has the same beat and/or any of the same verses (Dead Presidents, Who You Wit, U Don’t Know, etc.). If the two versions do not share the same beat or any of the same verses, they are counted as two separate entries in the poll (Friend Or Foe/Friend Or Foe ’98, Can’t Knock The Hustle and remix, Coming Of Age and Da Sequel, Can I Live and Can I Live II, Excuse Me Miss and La La La, etc.).

― emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Tuesday, 30 July 2013 19:49 (twelve years ago)
hard to find anything interesting to say about it bc it's just a tight song
― emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Tuesday, 30 July 2013 19:50 (twelve years ago)
"Imaginary Player" always seemed to be one of the songs Jay most regretted not releasing as a single. An early Vol 2 tracklist had "Imaginary Player II" on it.

it's an interesting track to me because a Timbaland production should be really glaring in the context of the Blueprint sound/'concept' but it works in there so well, better than it probably would've on any of the other more Timbaland-heavy albums.

all of those beats get on my nerves
yay at STreets is Watching placing. that was one of mine.

yeah me too, and Politics
― HOOS next aka won't get steened again (Hurting 2), Tuesday, 30 July 2013 23:53 (twelve years ago)
I like Politics and there was no shortage of RD tracks I voted for, but left that one off.
I do love the way he says "yoo-zhoo-al" tho.
― Neanderthal, Tuesday, 30 July 2013 23:54 (twelve years ago)
I love that little syncopated bit of the sample every four bars that drops the one.
― HOOS next aka won't get steened again (Hurting 2), Tuesday, 30 July 2013 23:56 (twelve years ago)
Yeah that beat is kind of a tease. Perfectly sequenced.

ok, one more for tonight, and then we'll pick up in the morning. I should mention, 152 different songs received votes in this poll!

― HOOS next aka won't get steened again (Hurting 2), Wednesday, 31 July 2013 00:06 (twelve years ago)
"I Do" is one of the songs that i considered for the 'great song where Jay is the weak link' ballot
― Some-D (some dude), Wednesday, 31 July 2013 00:08 (twelve years ago)
btw here's a depressing list: http://www.billboard.com/articles/list/1568783/jay-z-20-biggest-billboard-hits
less than half of those songs got a single vote in this poll
― Some-D (some dude), Wednesday, 31 July 2013 00:09 (twelve years ago)
Unhhh gwb top 3 for me.
― Hooks on Phoenix worked for me (Spottie_Ottie_Dope), Wednesday, 31 July 2013 00:10 (twelve years ago)
not surprising at all. A lot of those are solid party songs, just not what comes to mind when I think about why I listen to Jay-Z. I guess that's to his credit that he can make so many earworm hits and still has amassed a fatter folio of nerd-approved lyrics than most.

Damn straight, though in retrospect I put "Streets Is Watching" too low on my ballot.
Also I rated it high but "Politics As Usual" is too low here.
Ski wins everything, basically.

― emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Wednesday, 31 July 2013 02:06 (twelve years ago)
yeah non-album stuff really did not do well in this poll in general, could easily be a whole separate runoff poll of just features.
― Some-D (some dude), Wednesday, 31 July 2013 02:12 (twelve years ago)
I did vote for "Stop" in the lower reaches of my ballot. Although it's not the latest tune I voted for it was probably the end point of my Jay obsession.
― Tim F, Wednesday, 31 July 2013 02:12 (twelve years ago)
wtf at that billboard list. lots of r&b singles where he has a really tiny guest spot at best.
i mean that said i think i tilted my ballot towards album cuts too much. would almost be happy with a separate guest spot poll. (and one for luda too!)
― stefon taylor swiftboat (s.clover), Wednesday, 31 July 2013 02:16 (twelve years ago)
oh i voted for stop low too, and its also the chronologically last track i voted for. after we get through the main 40 i'm curious about the outliers.
― stefon taylor swiftboat (s.clover), Wednesday, 31 July 2013 02:19 (twelve years ago)
i paid no attention at all during the american gangster era, so rediscovering Roc Boys is v. pleasant, even though like all the work is in the production and the lyrics don't seem v. "there"
when it's all said and done i'll post at least the top 60, maybe top 80 or something

― HOOS next aka won't get steened again (Hurting 2), Wednesday, 31 July 2013 04:44 (twelve years ago)
in the late '90s even some of the biggest rap hits still weren't really getting that high on the Hot 100 -- "Hard Knock Life" didn't get into the top 10, neither did "Can I Get A." that was already changing by early 2000, when "Big Pimpin'" did go top 10, though.
― Some-D (some dude), Wednesday, 31 July 2013 08:52 (twelve years ago)

i remember talking to a friend who lived in NYC who had also been a fan of RD/Vol. 1 and he was telling me about this Jay-Z/Jermaine Dupri song Hot 97 was playing super heavy, but back then you couldn't really just listen to it on the internet, so i was all primed for "Money Ain't A Thang" way before i heard it, such a jam.

i always think about the time on Making The Band 2 that Ness went to see his newborn child in the hospital, and the MTV producers put "Song Cry" in the background with Jay yelling "most incredible baby!" like Jay-Z was actually talking about Ness's most incredible baby.

Yeah, I probably first heard like half the Jay-Z songs I know on Hot 97, mostly in the car. It brought a certain excitement to things that the internet lacks, especially when Funkmaster Flex is like "THIS IS SO TOUGH!" and runs it back to the beginning like 18 times in a row.

I had mixed feelings about voting for Brooklyn's Finest because I think Biggie kind of crushes Jay on it. But Jay is still kind of essential to the track because of the back-and-forth, plus he has "Squeezed off on him/ left them paramedics breathing soft on him"
― HOOS next aka won't get steened again (Hurting 2), Wednesday, 31 July 2013 15:26 (twelve years ago)
yeah Biggie shines brighter but they're both so great going back and forth every few bars. it's such a shame that Jay and Big didn't get to do like 30 songs together.

i love the wanton waste of starpower on that chorus, which kind of feels like it anticipated Kanye's whole check-out-all-these-unbilled-stars-deep-in-the-mix method these days. would've been nice to hear Slick Rick or Q-Tip actually rap on a track with Jay-Z, but they sound so great on that hook.
― some dude, Wednesday, 31 July 2013 16:12 (twelve years ago)
now that i think of it, i'd be comfortable calling Jay/Tip/Rick my top 3 MCs. no disrespect to Biz.

this is a great poll sh1p.
― where he eats the gunk off of Ronald's rocket. (a hoy hoy), Wednesday, 31 July 2013 17:47 (twelve years ago)
man all 3 of those songs on one single, that's great. i love the story about how the "I Just Wanna Love U" video has all those cars in it because it was supposed to be a shoot for "Parking Lot Pimpin'," but at the last minute changed his mind about the single because he released he had a monster record on his hand. "Parking Lot Pimpin'" is nice but it being a single woulda been too "Big Pimpin'" sequel-ish.
after the Roc dropped Amil, they kept performing "You Me Him & Her" in concert but with the chorus changed to "Amil-lion GONE!" lol
― some dude, Wednesday, 31 July 2013 17:52 (twelve years ago)
I like Amil's album (because I like her voice). Not sure I can muster up anything more persuasive than that, but IIRC there's a few strong tracks on it. Amil appeared 3 or 4 times on my ballot.

― emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Thursday, 1 August 2013 05:07 (twelve years ago)
Definitely top 5 for me.
I feel like "Come & Get Me" is a bit of an oddity - an experimental, even ~arty~ track from a big name rapper that:
(a) is, if anything, underrated; and
(b) goes as hard as anything in his discography ever
One thing that I feel was particularly fantastic about the Tim/Jay pairing in this period is the way subtle shifts in the groove mirror and counterpoint the shifts in flow and narrative, these very carefully controlled gradations of murderous intensity the perfect complement to the ever-increasing relentlessness of Jay's flow (this could describe "It's Hot" and "Snoopy Track" as well but it's particularly true of "Come and Get Me").
It's something that I don't think either of them ever really did in quite the same way with anyone else (whether producer for Jay-Z or singer/rapper for Timbaland), which makes these tracks all the more fascinating to me.
― Tim F, Thursday, 1 August 2013 08:38 (twelve years ago)
yeah "Come And Get Me" was actually on the list of underrated tracks deej and i worked on recently: http://www.complex.com/music/2013/07/underrated-jay-z-songs/
it's always been a favorite of mine and it did way better than i expected here. i was comparing how Jay/Timbaland collaborations ranked on this poll vs. the Timbo poll, and they ended up in slightly different order, and without giving too much away, "Come And Get Me" is one of the songs that kinda jumped up in the pecking order here.

I feel like some dude is correct here but (or maybe not "but" since it looks like he probably agrees with the following) my favourite seven or so Vol. 3 tracks (basically Timbaland + Premier + Rockwilder) feel stronger as a whole than my equivalent favourites from Vol. 1 - like, I love "It's Hot" a little bit more than "Where I'm From", "Come & Get Me" a little bit more than "Friend or Foe '98", and so on down the line. This is enough to push it to top spot for me regardless of the quality of the second-rung tracks.
Vol. 2 is probably the least patchy of the first three volumes (i.e. least variations in quality from track to track) but it's also the one of those I listen to least, overall the highs don't feel as high.

― Hooks on Phoenix worked for me (Spottie_Ottie_Dope), Friday, 2 August 2013 00:27 (twelve years ago)
I remember I got em all years after the fact, but all within weeks of each other (there's posts of mine on here under my earliest terrible incarnation where I was asking for opinions on which was best).
I remember not liking Vol 3 much when I first heard it, but on revisiting it two years ago, loved most of it. Vol 1, I always liked a lot, but I just had a problem with those really OTT commercial tracks like "I Know What Boys Like". but the rest of the album is ace, outside of those 2-3.
Vol 2 tho, it's weird at first hearing Jay-Z over Ruff-Ryder-esque beats, but I grew to love it. his lyricism is great on it too - "A Week Ago"'s final verse is so ice cold ("You'll always be in jail, son/minus the bars"), "Coming of Age Part 2", "Nigga What, Nigga Who". when I saw Jay-Z and Kanye on the WTT tour, it was a 4-hour drive, so I was playin nothing but old Jay-Z joints, and Vol 2 probably entered my player the most on that trip.
― Neanderthal, Friday, 2 August 2013 00:35 (twelve years ago)
Vol 2 was my first Jay purchase, love it to death. So many memories tied to it. I was always mad at him for not getting Redman to guest on Reservoir Dogs tho.

His tracks on the Streets Is Watching OST are all worthy of this poll too. I put Only A Customer in my top 15 but no way does it place here. Sounds kinda like a DJ Quik beat is prolly why I love it tbf.

― Attractive Humas 2013 (a not-necessarily WS thread) (J0rdan S.), Friday, 2 August 2013 00:52 (twelve years ago)
honestly that song is what made me realize I'd underrated him so badly as a rapper. Blueprint was the second album of his I owned (years after the fact) and I heard that line about overcharging niggas for what they did to the cold crush, "poof, vamoosh son of a bitch", "show them how to move in a room full of vultures", "I seen hoop dreams deflate like a true fiend's weight/To try and to fail, the two things I hate/Succeed in this rap game, the two things that's great"....so many good lines.
think it was lost on many of the casual rap fans who really just liked the chantable chorus, but man, it's full of quotables.

I've kept out of the thread out of embarrassment from not participating, but the results are terrific.

vol 3. is the jay album that actually feels that it has the most conceptual unity to me. it takes the rap game / crack game analogy and mixes it up with the trial motif and he spins this elaborate justification for his career and success that spans the whole thing. his flow is also at its most inventive and reinventive (and Things That U Do is the height of this for me).
i was just remembering when blueprint came out and i feel like lots of us were collectively floored by the luxuriousness of its beats (which have nothing on e.g. watch the throne or really anything that came after). now it doesn't feel nearly as impressive, but at the time there was this feeling of "wait, rap can do that?" and i feel like it was when kanye and just blaze both really broke big. jay's verses are less rhythmically inventive and syncopated, but there are also these tracks where he just keeps going like he's speaking in perfect rhyming iambic couplets or something, on and on. stuff like breathe easy. its just this lyrical monster truck crushing everything in its path. but now it feels overwhelming to me, like aesthetically unified by not sufficiently _fun_, and thematically too "important" and dispersed at once. it probably changed up the next few years of rap more than anything else jay did though, and in terms of casting that shadow its maybe in the top 20 albums of all time?
but now i go back to jay and i really want bangers and sick verses, and for those two things, the earlier stuff is generally way better.

"around here"? dude, it's an interlude with no chorus that people love so much that he plays it at every concert and put it on his fucking greatest hits album. i think we actually kinda rated it low relative to its popularity by leaving it outside the top 10.
do you guys know the remix/alt version with a different Just Blaze beat and slightly different verses? also incredible:

intro/one in a million/rhyme no more was in my top5 i believe. that aaliyah flip is so incredible... as much as i love that entire track i'll still be forever salty that jay didn't rock over that beat for 3 verses
― Attractive Humas 2013 (a not-necessarily WS thread) (J0rdan S.), Friday, 2 August 2013 14:05 (twelve years ago)
agreed that "snoopy track" is a bit overrated... he should've let juvie kick a verse
does jay get enough credit for throwing dudes like too short and juvie etc on his albums? or is it not as unusual as it seems to me

bummed about Can't Get Wit That not placing (its always the track I play people when they somehow dismiss jay as commercial and boring and invariably it changes up how they think about him), and Things That U Do and Do It Again placing so low. I thought the latter two were universally loved.

lol "Time To Build"
lotta pre-RD tracks are impressive but the only one i really love enough that i'd've considered voting for is probably "Only A Customer"
― some dude, Friday, 2 August 2013 18:31 (twelve years ago)
Yeah I burned a high vote on that one. Only A Customer, though, would place it even higher today.

lol, knew it would. I don't even hate the song (actually love it tons, even the homage to UGK in the last verse), but I hate that it was a gimmicky tune that non-Jay fans still throw out whenever you say you like Jay-Z. "Oh, it's the 99 Problems guy". fuck that.
