Obviously Hair Metal was a particular low point in music but the power ballad really took it even lower.

ohgod i really hate silent lucidity (and Queensryche) with a passion.

I wasn't aware there was any differences

Even the early 90s songs are not in the same style. Compared to Firehouse, Extreme and Queensryche were like art-rock bands who did concept albums. It's not 100% obvious from those two songs in isolation, maybe, but neither is a typical power ballad by any stretch, although they're both slow songs by hard rock bands. "More than Words" is a decent Everly Bros pastiche. "Silent Lucidity" is a decent Pink Floyd pastiche that's not even about a romantic/sexual relationship in any obvious sense. It's no more of a power ballad than "Comfortably Numb" is. If they came out in the past decade, they'd both probably be considered 'indie' (Plain White T's vs Muse?).

I don't really have the energy to listen to a tonne of songs by Firehouse, Warrant, Creed, etc to pick out the actual worst, though.

Sister Christian is retroactively redeemed by that scene in Boogie Nights.

That Tigertailz thing might be a real contender in that it doesn't even sound as competent as Firehouse.

The one time I saw Cheap Trick they introduced "The Flame" by saying how much they hated it, and that they were essentially forced to record it. It's unclear what or whom exactly was forcing them to play the song at that show.

Magnum were very popular in the late 80s for a few years. They used to play the SECC so despite not exactly having huge radio smashes there was a market for it. I guess AOR had its following. Raw/Kerrang certainly covered it. Noodle Vague or Pashmina could confirm this.
I suspect if the UK had a rock station A)it woulda been very popular and B) more of these bands woulda had hits.

No, I was just listing the UK #1s for 1987 because I thought it was a crazy mix of things.

Starship "Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now" 9 May 1987 4

this was bad but I got a horrid feeling the even worse piece of shit we built this city was #1

Cher had a big hit with a certain rock song too in the 80s.

Ha, I really like "Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now". I'm not sure I dislike the Airplane/Starship in any period!

EveningStar (Sund4r), Monday, 5 August 2013 23:42 (twelve years ago)

Commercial radio had its own singles chart and i think the Chart Show on ITV used it so a lot of the time songs i thought were #1 werent an official #1. (ie the one bbc use)

Spirit have another connection to power ballads - Mark Andes was a member of Heart right through their 80s period.

Whitesnake - Is It Love? was definitely a hit. I guess UK's hair metal bands did well here but maybe not as well as in north america.

I can't believe anyone would hate "The Flame". It's such a good song! I realized that at least one of the reasons I like Big Star's "For You" is because it has the same "yoooooooou" as "The Flame" (which I heard first when I was in middle school and not-dancing at the teen dance club).

free your spirit pig (La Lechera), Monday, 5 August 2013 23:45 (twelve years ago)

I mean the flame analogy is corny, but parts of the song redeem the ott corny parts. At least I think so.

free your spirit pig (La Lechera), Monday, 5 August 2013 23:46 (twelve years ago)

"The Flame" is better than the competition def.

Considered as the band's comeback album following the commercial failure of the 1986 album The Doctor, Lap of Luxury spawned three top 40 hit singles and one minor hit single. After "The Flame" topped the American Billboard Hot 100, a cover of Elvis Presley's "Don't Be Cruel" peaked at #4. The third single "Ghost Town" continued the commercial success, peaking at #33 whilst the fourth single "Never Had a Lot to Lose" peaked at #75. The album opener "Let Go" also peaked at #32 on the American Billboard Mainstream Rock chart. The success of "The Flame" brought the group out of a years-long commercial slump and back into music industry prominence. It was the band's only number one single in America.[4] It also became the band's first hit on the Billboard Adult Contemporary chart, reaching #29 there; "Don't Be Cruel" then hit #32 on the AC chart.

Reportedly, although the band disliked the song at first,[5] Rick Nielsen disliked the song so much on first hearing that he yanked it from the tape player and ground the cassette beneath his boot heel.

In an interview with Gerry Galipault, Cheap Trick drummer Bun E. Carlos stated: "Tom Petersson rejoined in 1988, and then the vice president at Epic Records told us he had these two songs and they're both gonna be #1. He goes, 'We got one for you and one for the group Chicago, but you can have first choice.' He said, 'I think the one 'The Flame' would be good for you guys.' The other one was 'Look Away,' and it sounded like some girl singing on the demo. We really didn't like that song anyway, so 'Sure, we'll do 'The Flame.' We're game.'"[6]

According to lead vocalist Robin Zander, "The band was very skeptical about performing this song live, because we only liked to perform songs written by us. However, a young man from, oh, I don't know, somewhere, confirmed to us after a show in Florida about a week after the song was released that the song was great and, get this, would be a #1 single. As we joked about the guy's prediction, we later realized whoa! This guy was right. I thank him for that."

Same notes played in the same succession, at the same tempo, and in the same key on what sounds like the same instrument.

Isn't the instrument a guitar? There isn't really a succession of notes here: they're strumming an Asus2 chord in a similar (but not particularly unusual) rhythm. The similarity doesn't extend very much beyond that first chord. It's totally possible that Cheap Trick or the songwriters heard the Spirit song and were inspired by it. I'm just saying that this is far from any grounds to claim plagiarism (assuming that's what you meant by "rips off").

arctic mindbath (President of the People's Republic of Antarctica), Tuesday, 6 August 2013 00:11 (twelve years ago)

In an era of power ballads, "Right Here Waiting" distinguished itself by its understatement;[according to whom?] the track was arranged by Marx with Jeffery (C.J.) Vanston to feature none of the heavy drums and synth popular at the time, with Marx's vocal accompanied only by classical guitar (by Bruce Gaitsch) and keyboards (by Vanston). It is one of Marx's most frequently covered compositions.

I'm 80% sure it's a mandocello rather than a guitar -- Nielsen's dad owned a music store which had a number of odd stringed instruments, and he also played a mandocello on, oddly enough, "Mandocello."

I agree that the similarity doesn't extend beyond the intro, but it's like the Elastica/Wire skirmish: it's only a few seconds, but it's the exact same thing (or, alternately, it's the exactly same thing, but it's only a few seconds).

At least with Elastica/Wire, there's an actual similar melodic gesture. The Spirit/Cheap Trick thing really is a fairly common strumming pattern on one chord.

that richard marx song

Three music videos were filmed for the song, although two were deemed "too sexual" in nature, and were shunned and banned by lobbyist before the release ever hit the public's screens.[citation needed] Included in the first banned video was 42 second "softcore" sex scene, involving Marx and the love interest this song refers to.

The second video, was picked at with a fine-toothed comb. Complaints were made about every minor detail, including Marx briefly holding hands with a man, and the backup dancers clothing being "too tight".[citation needed]

After the criticism, Marx's producers denied any creative control to Marx, and ordered that he film a three minute sequence of him playing the piano, and became the music video for "Right Here Waiting".[citation needed]

all of my high school friends listened to the infamous 103.5 THE BLAZE in chicago, which between maybe '89 and '92 was playing nothing but "metal" such as this. along with some classic rock a la aerosmith, zep, kansas, rush, pink floyd, bad company, journey, etc. i think right around the time of trixter and 'adrenalize' the station plunged. they tried to keep up by putting nirvana and PJ in the playlist but Q101 was way ahead of them and basically stole half their audience.

honestly, I used to have a playlist of this shit for like when I was trying to get to sleep at night, cuz cheesy ballads don't require much concentration, are usually earwormy, won't sound awesome enough to keep me awake active listening, and send me to the arena of my dreams. Shit I used to have on my sleepytime mix tapes included:

Skid Row-Wasted Time
Def Leppard - Love Bites
W.A.S.P. - Hold On to My Heart
Chicago - Will You Still Love Me? (FP me if you must)
Peter Cetera - The Glory of Love
Symphony X - Candlelight Fantasia (seriously this is awesome!)

the thing about "I'll Be Over You" is just how wonderfully over the top it is, just imagining a bunch of well-to-do studio musicians rock stars laying out their 15 year old melodrama without any irony.

Some people live their dreams
Some people close their eyes
Some people's destiny
Passes by

lol 'destiny'

and then I like how Lukather sets it up in the pre-chorus to be like "but y'know, I'll be ok with the next line"

is "Hysteria" a power ballad? I hope so. That thing glistens.

I just looked at four undergrad textbooks on popular music or rock music. The only one that lists "power ballad" in its index is Covach's What's That Sound?. All he says is "[ i ]n a power ballad, the singer ... is given a chance to display his sensitive side, as the song often begins with a quiet expressive section, before the heavy guitars and drums enter to pump up the arrangement." He gives "Every Rose Has Its Thorn" as a representative example. This is pretty close to how I understand power ballads: the soft-loud contrast seems important to me. So in this sense, "Hysteria" wouldn't really be a power ballad in the way that "Love Bites" (or "Bringing On the Heartbreak") is. I don't know that there's any real hard-and-fast definition, though.

EveningStar (Sund4r), Tuesday, 6 August 2013 23:55 (twelve years ago)

textbooks that don't cite Home Sweet Home as the textbook-definition of a power ballad are suspect imo

'every rose' and 'silent lucidity' and 'when the children cry' and 'more than words' err too much on the side of sensitivity, you need to have less wimpy 'why is the world sad' proselytizing or james taylor begging and more 'momma let me tell you' type testifying.

Hush now, don't you cry
Wipe away the teardrop from your eye
You're lying safe in bed
It was all a bad dream
Spinning in your head
Your mind tricked you to feel the pain
Of someone close to you leaving the game of life
So here it is, another chance
Wide awake you face the day
Your dream is over... or has it just begun?

There's a place I like to hide
A doorway that I run through in the night
Relax child, you were there
But only didn't realize and you were scared
It's a place where you will learn
To face your fears, retrace the years
And ride the whims of your mind
Commanding in another world
Suddenly you hear and see
This magic new dimension

I- will be watching over you
I- am gonna help you see it through
I- will protect you in the night
I- am smiling next to you, in Silent Lucidity

[spoken during solo]
(Visualize your dream)
(Record it in the present tense)
(Put it into a permanent form)
(If you persist in your efforts)
(You can achieve dream control)
(Dream control)
(How are we feeling today, better??)
(Dream control, dream control)
(Help me)

If you open your mind for me
You won't rely on open eyes to see
The walls you built within
Come tumbling down, and a new world will begin
Living twice at once you learn
You're safe from pain in the dream domain
A soul set free to fly
A round trip journey in your head
Master of illusion, can you realize
Your dream's alive, you can be the guide but...

I- will be watching over you
I- am gonna help to see it through
I- will protect you in the night
I- am smiling next to you....

I still refuse to consider that song any sort of power ballad, unless you're also going to call "Comfortably Numb" and "Hey You" power ballads.

Like, those are not power ballad lyrics, you get that? These are power ballad lyrics:

I never needed love like I need you
And I never lived for nobody, but I live for you
Oooh, babe, lost in love is what I feel when I'm with you

Maybe it's the way you touch me with the warmth of a sun
Maybe it's the way you smile, I come all undone
Oooh, babe, lost in love is that I feel when I'm with you

Baby, oh I get chills when I'm with you
Baby, my world stands still when I'm with you
When I'm with you

I never cared for nobody like I care for you
And I never wanted to share the things I want to share with you
Oooh, babe, lost in love is what I feel when I'm with you

Baby, oh I get chills when I'm with you
Baby, my world stands still when I'm with you
When I'm with you

Baby, oh I get chills when I'm with you
Baby, my world stands still when I'm with you
When I'm with you
When I'm with you
When I'm with you...

Yeah, but somebody called it a power ballad.

And a few people were attacking it on grounds of not being a good power ballad or not as good as "Heaven" when I think it's going for something completely different.

I have no problem with calling "Jet City Woman" a power ballad.

"we were all here just playing our classy brand of innocent poofyhaircore and Warrant just comes out with these strip club guitar riffs, and starts swingin' these wild, ribald double entendres around carelessly and....I don't know, suddenly, I had to ask myself if I could be a part of this new regime. if this was where glam metal was going...I wanted out"

when i was a kid, I didn't really listen to lyrics much, but from the bum warming his hands by the trash can fire in the video, I figured "where the down boys go" was to a homeless camp. like on some open letter to a landlord ish.

I did an air band to Bon Jovi's deep cut "Blood on Blood" in Gr 5, when I was 10. (Do they still do those in elementary schools??) I honestly had no idea when I was mouthing the words what "Danny knew this white trash girl/We each threw in a 10/She took us to this cheap motel/And turned us into men" was describing.

I have such a soft spot for the 80's ballads because they show and bring out the feminine side of these supposed hard guys who make womanizing an art form. They truly inside do feel mor for and about females than just the physical. And that is where the inspiration comes for alot of this romantic stuff. Yes some of it is contrived to make money at the time, but alot is also sincere and that is admirable. Guys need to start representing our gender better and showing females how special they are.

Silent Lucidity sounds to me more like a Pink Floyd The Wall rip than a true 80s power ballad.

Ha, I kept trying to make that point on this thread.

fuck the NRA (Neanderthal), Friday, 13 July 2018 00:25 (seven years ago)

strangely i kinda think Steven Tyler's entire power ballad style during their 1987-1993 comeback period was a straight rip from Easy Like Sunday Morning.

omar little, Friday, 13 July 2018 00:45 (seven years ago)

Crying by Aerosmith is the worst offender.

Dinsdale, Saturday, 14 July 2018 05:59 (seven years ago)

Journey "Open Arms"
Michael Bolton "That's What Love Is All About"
Survivor "The Search Is Over"
Five For Fighting "Superman"
Bob Segar "Mainstreet"
Kid Rock "Only God Knows Why"
Hinder "Better Than Me"
Nickleback "If Everyone Cared"

billstevejim, Saturday, 14 July 2018 06:30 (seven years ago)

so that's a list of bad songs.

the following are good songs:
Silent Lucidity
Love Song
Love Bites
The Flame
I Want To Know What Love Is
Heaven

billstevejim, Saturday, 14 July 2018 06:35 (seven years ago)

The best Aerosmith power ballad besides "Dream On" is either "Angel" or "What It Takes" (not counting "I Don't Want To Miss A Thing" since they didn't write it).

billstevejim, Saturday, 14 July 2018 06:37 (seven years ago)

What It Takes, sure.

Angel.....naaaaw

"Angel" is the definition of garbaggio.

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 14 July 2018 16:51 (seven years ago)

i enjoy its cheesy bombast but the strings veer towards dentist-drill levels of shrill

Squeaky Fromage (VegemiteGrrl), Saturday, 14 July 2018 17:11 (seven years ago)

I'm pretty partial to "Amazing" tbrr
