Do we have a thread for Chance the Rapper/Acid Rap ?

― Van Horn Street, Friday, September 6, 2013 11:43 AM Bookmark Flag Post Permalink

I've been meaning to start one cause it's my favorite album of the year by far.

― The Reverend, Friday, September 6, 2013 4:08 PM Bookmark

Yeah, so the thing that makes this album great is it's the sound of an exuberantly joyful character working through some hard shit, the production is colorful, and Chance brings a manic energy to whole thing, bouncing between off-the-wall raps and bluesy scat at will. Also "Pusha Man/Paranoia" is the best rap song this year. His first tape, 10 Day from a couple years back was good too, if not quite as fully formed.

I think "Chain Smoker" is my favorite deep cut no one talks about off of this.

Pusha Man/Paranoia, Acid Rap and Chain Smoker are my favorites. Hope Favorite Song will be a single. The whole thing is probably my hip-hop album this year.

Van Horn Street, Friday, 6 September 2013 23:40 (eleven years ago)

woah i was just listening to acid rap on grooveshark and "carnival" by natalie merchant on spotify at the same time and they synched up in this tripped out way

this album is essentially a legit classic to me

J0rdan S., Saturday, 7 September 2013 02:45 (eleven years ago)

The way he switches voices midsong is the source of his strength and weakness imo.

I need to revisit the tape, because when I think about it I feel more fond of it than I did when it was new and the quirks of his voice/delivery grated on me easily. And that new song with Lil Wayne is so good, I kinda hope that becomes his big single.

2 Steenz (some dude), Saturday, 7 September 2013 03:28 (eleven years ago)

Still cant knock the K'naan comparisons out of my head BUT I still really like him and this tape.

Me & Mahomies (Spottie_Ottie_Dope), Saturday, 7 September 2013 03:37 (eleven years ago)

Hadnt heard that song w Wayne, ty. Always good to hear wayne just straight-up rappy rapping.

Still listen to this regularly, and still marvel at how incredible it is. Can't list many recent rap albums that match this level of song craft while sustaining this level of energy while featuring rapping this consistently strong. Incredible.

Evan R, Saturday, 7 September 2013 04:07 (eleven years ago)

"Chain Smoker" is just glorious, but my favorite is still "Lost." The way he romanticizes an empty hookup, looking for meaning that's not there, is just so sad and pure. You rarely find that level of affection in rap songs about actual romance, let alone flings

Evan R, Saturday, 7 September 2013 04:10 (eleven years ago)

There is no duds on this album.

One of the tensions that makes this album work so is how it's got all these middle-class rap signifiers on the surface but also has all this heavy fucked up street shit lurking just off-camera and sometimes intruding.

Gonna see this dude tomorrow night.

MikoMcha, Tuesday, 17 September 2013 04:11 (eleven years ago)

I like this and I'm glad it exists but there's something about his voice, or one of the voices he using, that I find really unpleasant to listen to.

I barely even noticed the Childish Gambino verse on first listen, the Ab-Soul verse is the really egregious one here.

Matt DC, Tuesday, 17 September 2013 09:57 (eleven years ago)

I feel like a big part of rap fandom, especially these days, is kinda figuring out what unique or strange voices/rapping styles you actually want to get used to and not be annoyed or put off by. Like it took me a while to come around to Kendrick's voice, still slowly getting used to Chance's.

Ugh that Ab Soul verse though.

Yeah, his voice does grate a bit. I have to admit...

MikoMcha, Tuesday, 17 September 2013 13:41 (eleven years ago)

It did for me when I'd only heard "Juice" and that's prob why it took me a couple months to check it out until I saw so many people I trust talk about how good it was. But as soon as I put it on it was immediately taken with it. Total Albums that you know are going to be brilliant within the opening 20 seconds of the first track status.

The Reverend, Tuesday, 17 September 2013 18:26 (eleven years ago)

also agree with matt but i think ultimately i could probably power through the sound of his voice if i felt more compelled by what he was saying with it. just don't really feel like i need early yeezy told to me again by wyclef on ludes

The Reverend, Tuesday, 17 September 2013 19:53 (eleven years ago)

One of the problem with the voice it is that at its most grating on Juice, which is the first single. Once I powered through it, I was fine. I really hope he doesn't get buried because of the voice like Joanna Newsom did.

Not impressed with the James Blake remix, and I usually really enjoy James Blake.

this talk about his weird grating voice is strange to me because it's so similar to lil wayne's? i mean not identical but certainly in the same lane, and it's made pretty obvious at the start of the tape when he says "please say the rapper"

i'm mostly with rtc in that i don't find what chance says particularly compelling, it's all a bit too backpackery for me though i don't hate it or anything

lex pretend, Wednesday, 18 September 2013 17:50 (eleven years ago)

what does 'too backpackery' mean in relation to what he's talking abt

rap steve gadd (D-40), Wednesday, 18 September 2013 17:50 (eleven years ago)

i def thought his earlier stuff was a little too much The Craft Of Song and not enough of him in it, but recent stuff is more fully fleshed out.

rap steve gadd (D-40), Wednesday, 18 September 2013 17:51 (eleven years ago)

Man...I can't at all understand anyone who says they don't find him compelling. "Paranoia" breaks my heart every time I hear it. I can't remember the last song that did the same.

The Reverend, Wednesday, 18 September 2013 18:02 (eleven years ago)

yeah i don't get that criticism at all

Yeah... it was okay.

Maybe chanting U.S.A. and running off stage at the end isn't an awesome move in Europe. In fact, there were more than a few amateurish moves, including cutting off tracks early and sort of criticizing the audience for not 'having fun', but I guess he's still finding his feet in front of different audiences.

show sold out. originally was 15$ ended up being way more expensive if you didn't get tickets in advance (we did).

high energy all the way through, crowd knew the words to most of the songs, chance was loving it. granted he wasn't opening for a big tour - it was a day off in between stops on the mac miller tour and he was the headliner at the hoxton which is small-ish but still, he definitely knows how to work a crowd.

twinkin' and drinkin' and ready to fly (Alex in Montreal), Thursday, 19 September 2013 04:03 (eleven years ago)

Actually, yeah, I thought DJ Oreo was great. The intro was amazing fun.

But don't get me wrong, the show was fine as a whole. I go to rap show often enough, but was surprised that they really took it in the direction of full blown party atmosphere. Sometimes the hype and vibe works to just enhance what's already there, sometimes it feels a bit forced. Maybe I just wasn't feeling for some reason.

Under the circumstances, for a Wednesday night in Amsterdam, they had to work hard and in the end it was pretty crazy.

MikoMcha, Thursday, 19 September 2013 09:25 (eleven years ago)

Men don’t comfort or love her in reality. They only have sex with her in her fantasies. In her dreams, he still deeply cares for her (at least sexually)

This guy that she likes doesn’t love her, or really take her seriously, or show her any real affection (sexual or not). And even in her dreams when he does show her “love” it’s only because of the sex. Which isn’t even love, it’s lust. So, either way, she’s not getting what she truly wants from him.

I thought the Life Round Here remix was jarring but I love both artists and I think that if Blake was writing with Chance instead of just plugging him into an existing song that could be interesting.

I like Matt, who wrote that, but I'm not sure I really 'get' that piece & the connections its trying to make. Or the strawman of white academic criticism that it's apparently an anecdote to? whenever i read academic criticism of rap it tends to be from people of color, because academia is one place where people of color have managed to make more significant inroads of influence

i also have issues w/ Rachel Kaadzi Ghansah's pieces but that's neither here nor there

it's also just kinda frustrating that Chance did a hook for the song that really feels like a very personal mission statement coming from him, and then he lets other people do the verses.

some dude, Wednesday, 8 July 2015 14:39 (nine years ago)

Chance always making himself adjacent to people who are ostensibly similar but not quite (Vic Mensa, Gambino, Kyle) really just serves to help me see what he gets right that other rappers in his lane get wrong.

Don't understand why they chose to make you slog all the way through this quite hazy, insubstantial sprawl before you get to Sunday Candy, which is great and catchy and infuriating all at the same time.

i do think he has sort of deemphasized his own rapping... this def shares a sort of structure or maybe ethos w/ the social experiment album where the guests are really foregrounded and he feels more like part of a tapestry than the center of attention. it's obv not as pronounced as surf but it feels more of a piece w/ that than acid rap. similarly there was a sociological perspective on acid rap that i found really illuminating & refreshing and that too has receded a bit prob because the circumstances of his own life have changed drastically.

J0rdan S., Friday, 13 May 2016 18:59 (nine years ago)

acid rap was p beats to rhymes trad this one is crazily songy p impressive im liking him more like that, didnt listen to surf

lag∞n, Friday, 13 May 2016 19:01 (nine years ago)

yeah i mean this one is obv crazy accomplished on a music & songwriting level and by comparison acid rap feels stripped down. but there was like an overarching aesthetic vision to acid rap that still felt preternatural to me & something like "good ass outro" was just crazy good on a musical level. i do miss that beats to rhymes thing tho, i really was savoring the second "blessings"

Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Friday, 13 May 2016 19:25 (nine years ago)

Listening to Sunday Candy on repeat, sooooo good. I liked it before, but not like this.

The way his singing is the rhythm track in Blessings is so good.

Frederik B, Friday, 13 May 2016 19:25 (nine years ago)

i will listen to surf i mean tbh i did at least .5 times already before

lag∞n, Friday, 13 May 2016 19:27 (nine years ago)

I love that 'Sunday Candy' is both a reference to the eucharist and oral sex.

Frederik B, Friday, 13 May 2016 19:29 (nine years ago)

I'm loving this so far. It's more immediate and song-oriented than Surf, but it takes the "party and everyone's invited" vibe that I loved about that project and combines it with the joyous and infectious personality of Acid Rap.

thom yorke state of mind (voodoo chili), Friday, 13 May 2016 19:36 (nine years ago)

I'm also glad that Somewhere in Paradise didn't make the tape. It's pretty lightweight when compared to some of the tracks that did make the cut.

I don't think they're trying to phase out downloads. I imagine the tape will be available for free download when it stops being exclusive and migrates onto other streaming platforms

Apple still makes a good deal of money on downloads, they won't phase them out until they're making more money off Apple Music than iTunes. That's definitely not happening yet

a poon shaped mule (voodoo chili), Saturday, 14 May 2016 14:45 (nine years ago)

longneck you should look for the aac rip on soulseek

ANU (sisilafami), Saturday, 14 May 2016 16:10 (nine years ago)

i think i read on billboard that putting it up as a stream first allows it to be counted as an official album release (i.e. soundscan will count the streams up) which, among other things, mean it can be entered from grammy consideration

Great album but good lord that first track sounds like complete shit, that low brass noise and the vocoders just crashing into everything else. Pretty sure I'm listening to the supposedly superior AAC version as well.

The rest is nearly uniformly fantastic.

Matt DC, Tuesday, 17 May 2016 16:21 (nine years ago)

Yeah the «aac» is slightly less abrasive but still sounds like shit, unfortunately. Why did Acid Rap and Surf both sound so much better than this?

human and working on getting beer (longneck), Tuesday, 17 May 2016 17:02 (nine years ago)

human and working on getting beer (longneck), Tuesday, 17 May 2016 18:59 (nine years ago)

I'll take it over Acid Rap, but Sunday Candy is the best thing he's ever done.

Frederik B, Tuesday, 17 May 2016 19:01 (nine years ago)

i have the exact opposite opinion of this post ^

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 17 May 2016 19:02 (nine years ago)

I agree that it could use more juke beats, but it still has a juke sensibility in parts. Angels, for instance. The interplay between the horns and beats in the chorus sounds quite jukish to me. The end of Summer Friends, after Jeremiah comes in, the beats begin changing, and it almost hints at a juke jam before it ends. In other places, I think the rhythmic interplay from juke is influencing the way Chance rides the beat. The way parts of the songs seem to flow in different tempi.

Frederik B, Tuesday, 17 May 2016 19:07 (nine years ago)

Anyone know why it's off datpiff? It says that a complaint has been filed against it from some lawyer firm. Is it downloadable some place else without a subscription?

Frederik B, Tuesday, 17 May 2016 19:11 (nine years ago)

Apple had it pulled, they have an exclusive

ulysses, Tuesday, 17 May 2016 19:12 (nine years ago)

Streaming site exclusives are going to become very tiresome very quickly for a lot of people. No one's going to keep two or three subscriptions going and presumably you can't keep signing up for free trials. So everyone will just end up stealing the thing anyway, especially as there's unlikely to be a physical product in these instances.

i agree with this in principle as well but it's annoying and dumb and occasionally slows down my tech to have to search various apps for the music I want to listen to

ulysses, Wednesday, 18 May 2016 17:57 (nine years ago)

in my world of young people update: i was talking with a pair of interns working with me last night and it became clear that they didn't know a music marketplace other than the streaming one. They became conscious consumers during the itunes era and have spent all their teens with spotify and youtube. one of them told me she remembered having a big book of cds that she took with her to elementary school.
i always kinda thought that a generation spoiled in this fashion would become dependent and it kinda worked?

marcos, Thursday, 19 May 2016 21:27 (nine years ago)

i think the wayne verse is amazing. honestly wonder if he's gotten off drugs or something cuz there's emotional & lyrical complexity in this verse that i feel like he hasn't shown in like 5 years.

Hold up, get too choked up when I think of old stuff
Move on, put my goons on, they kidnap newborns
In the streets my face a coupon
Her pussy too warm
All these bitches come to do harm
Just bought a new charm
Fuck the watch, I buy a new arm, you lukewarm
I'm Uncle Luke with the hoes
Pretty bitches, centerfolds
Tippy toes around my crib in their robes, just their robes
Half a milli' in the safe, another in the pillowcase
Codeine got me movin' slower than a caterpillar race

J0rdan S., Thursday, 19 May 2016 22:52 (nine years ago)

well i'd group that verse in w/ the 2 chainz collab album where he's also very lucid and creative

J0rdan S., Thursday, 19 May 2016 22:53 (nine years ago)

I like that verse a lot. There were a lot of the same shades of emotional vulnerability and openness on Sorry For The Wait 2, as well, but they were understandably overshadowed by the many, many stinkers on that tape. Underdog Wayne is kind of an interesting idea for him to explore; would love to see him run with it on Carter Whatever # He's On.

There's only a couple years where "Wayne fell off" talk felt 100% accurate to me. Didn't like any of last year's projects though, don't think I ever made it very far into the second No Ceilings where he rapped over a bunch of cut-rate versions of Drake/Future beats

nova, Thursday, 19 May 2016 23:42 (nine years ago)

not hearing the wayne verse as solid at all and while some of that is up to the mix some of it is certainly up to taste.

ulysses, Friday, 20 May 2016 14:29 (nine years ago)

Yeah, Wayne is mostly good again in 2016. Such a relief. 2015 was dark.

human and working on getting beer (longneck), Friday, 20 May 2016 15:13 (nine years ago)

I listened to this again and that first track is definitely Kanye's fault, to the extent that I wonder if it was actually 'finished' before his vocals were even recorded, and the whole mix was squashed to allow Kanye to trample all over them. That vocoder is so much louder than Everything else and so out of place that I can't think of another scenario.

saw chance last night in Phoenix, pretty good cathartic show after this week. only complaint is that, during the 4 acid rap tracks in the show, he barely rapped. Like he would only do the first third of each line (if even that) and let the audience finish the rest while he ran around the stage like a madman.

intheblanks, Saturday, 12 November 2016 16:39 (eight years ago)

Coloring Book is great but has too many slow songs esp in the front half, needs more stuff along the tempo of All Night and No Problems. i get the gospel theme but chance is so good at wholesome pump up jams should be more of those

flopson, Tuesday, 22 November 2016 16:32 (eight years ago)

I haven't returned to Coloring Book nearly as often as I have Acid Rap, possibly because "All We Got" is a clunker of an opener and starting off with that track makes me want to put on something else. The amazing songs on here are amazing, though, and "Mixtape" and both "Blessings" have grown on me a lot since seeing Chance live last month

Frederik B, Tuesday, 22 November 2016 20:11 (eight years ago)

love this album a lot but the new Tribe is untouchable

Οὖτις, Tuesday, 22 November 2016 20:20 (eight years ago)

I might actually like the Jamila Woods and Saba tapes more than CB but whatever the case, this scene/crew/not sure what to call it is amazingly fertile right now. I don't like the Noname tape as much as some others do--I find her to be dour to an extent that becomes dull--but that's also worth hearing.

I haven't listened to All We Got more than once

rob, Tuesday, 22 November 2016 20:35 (eight years ago)

ATCQ It's awesome, but I feel like I've somewhat heard it before. Coloring Book is unique. The Jamila Woods tape is probably also in my top five or something. Haven't heard Saba or Noname, but the OddCouple tape was cool as well.

Frederik B, Tuesday, 22 November 2016 20:41 (eight years ago)

i haven't listened to this anywhere near as much as acid rap, tho much more than the social experiment album. i think he deviated from his core sound a little too much... i think "mixtape" is just awful, and idk if "smoke break" really works well at all.

but as far as making a single aimed at radio "no problem" is probably as good as anyone could have hoped for in terms of working on commercial and artistic terms, and "summer friends" is one of his best ever songs. i've been listening to the "blessings" reprise ever since he performed it on TV, and "angels" and "juke jam" are great too. i don't think this in my top 10 which i wouldn't have expected prior to its release but it still has its uses to me.

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 22 November 2016 21:05 (eight years ago)

Jordan mostly otm, but this is probably top ten material to me based on the high points alone.

the notes the loon doesn't play (ulysses), Tuesday, 22 November 2016 21:15 (eight years ago)

One of my fav things about Chance is those tiny little moments of vulnerability or sentimentality that he slips into nearly every song. I love the Noname album because it's loaded with even more of those. She has all these casual lines that just gut me.

Typically I don't listen to rap to feel bummed out, but she summons those feelings more effectively than any other rapper right now—the injustice of being dismissed or talked over or not having the love you give reciprocated. So her album isn't the joy bomb that Chance's is but it's a triumph of expression in its own right.

Evan R, Tuesday, 22 November 2016 21:17 (eight years ago)

summer friends is one of the great songs of the year in any case

the notes the loon doesn't play (ulysses), Tuesday, 22 November 2016 21:29 (eight years ago)

Summer Friends is great but I can't stand the fake Bon Iver bot. It's the album's worst recycled Kanye West trope.

despite thinking acid rap is best i think he has grown as an artist and have full belief he will best it soon. my main problem w colouring book is tempo and pacing; i love chance's giddy ecstatic overwhelming embrace the world energy and while doing a gospel album could've channeled that, instead lots of the tracks dragged

LOL, apparently there was a 5-foot alligator (!) sighted in one of Chicago's park lagoons (where I just went paddle boating a couple of weeks ago). Inevitably, it has been dubbed Chance the Snapper, and it has a twitter account.

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 11 July 2019 19:00 (five years ago)

Ugh I hated that. It’s so corny and doesn’t even make sense. Snappers are fish or turtles. Chance is from Chatham not humboldt park. I feel like the motivation for the name was some weird bourgie anxiety abt a “rough area” projected onto the rapper who soothes those anxieties for ppl

ILX’s bad boy (D-40), Thursday, 11 July 2019 19:44 (five years ago)

Huh. I thought it was just something that rhymed with "Rapper." I was a big fan of "Romancing the Stone" when I was a kid, and the bad guy in that movie has an alligator pit, and he's aways saying "look at those snappers!"

Simon H., Saturday, 27 July 2019 16:56 (five years ago)

It’s definitely not bad, but the first two tracks leave a bad taste that lingered. I’m definitely not allergic to his sentimental stuff (Same Drugs was either my fav or second fav CB track), and I think the album as a whole will make more sense in a live setting, but I definitely think it’s a step down.

lion king 2: the gift and the curse (voodoo chili), Saturday, 27 July 2019 18:20 (five years ago)

It's backloaded, yeah, but it's a step down. Nothing as good as Same Drugs, Summertime Friends or Sunday Candy. The productions are too boring.

Def Chance’s New Jersey but still good

Hannah GAPDY (Whiney G. Weingarten), Saturday, 27 July 2019 18:41 (five years ago)

this is pretty underwhelming, i like chance's sound so it's still generally pleasant and the production is very lush but the hooks aren't there compared to his previous work and it's pretty forgettable overall. absolutely does not need to be nearly 80 minutes either, but barely anything does. maybe there's a good album in it with half the tracks removed idk

ufo, Monday, 29 July 2019 07:53 (five years ago)

the backlash to it is somewhat understandable especially since chance is kinda corny in general and that grates with me sometimes even though i'm generally a fan, but still seems quite excessive - it's not a bad terrible album just bloated and a bit underwhelming. after listening to it more there's definitely a pretty good album hidden in there, like "all day long", "found a good one", and "zanies and fools" are all excellent among others and it's generally a pleasant listen just too long

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Tuesday, 30 July 2019 03:30 (five years ago)

i haven't had the opportunity to really dig into this album yet but in listening to it a few times i feel like the memes have really led the conversation here. everyone loved the ol happy ass tweet and now every review basically just says "ol happy ass." (this raises the question of music criticism's function when it makes the same point as a meme but in 1,500 more words, but that's a discussion for another thread.) i guess you could say that the ol happy ass tweet (to be general obv) crystalized feelings about chance instead of drove them but my problem w/ the discussion around this album is that it feels like it's just picked up from where it left off without actually engaging much w/ the album. it's hard for me to imagine the theoretical album that would've shifted the conversation on him... so i also don't think this album, which sounds kinda dope to me, is getting a fair shake

it's true it is great

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 30 July 2019 03:56 (five years ago)

there's def some stuff on here that doesn't really work -- the song that sounds like vampire weekend for instance -- but in the context of the scale and ambition of the album (the thread of musical omnivorousness as whiney points out) i don't really mind them so much

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 30 July 2019 04:05 (five years ago)

Thanks guys!

The omniverousness works for me in a way that it doesn’t with, say, Cudi because there’s still this Chance way of rapping that basically stays the same from track-to-track. It’s not like “this is my rock song” (yells) it’s mostly like “what if I was Chance over a rock song”

Anyway, the title track has been in and out of my head all day...

Hannah GAPDY (Whiney G. Weingarten), Tuesday, 30 July 2019 04:24 (five years ago)

Not sure there’s anything as bad here as childish gambino or action Bronson guest verses

ILX’s bad boy (D-40), Tuesday, 30 July 2019 05:42 (five years ago)

The album this most resembles is “surf” imo

ILX’s bad boy (D-40), Tuesday, 30 July 2019 06:12 (five years ago)

Surf had Sunday Candy, there's nothing here even 0,01% as good as Sunday Candy.

Frederik B, Tuesday, 30 July 2019 16:33 (five years ago)

I disagree but I always found Sunday candy a musically grating —way closer to the “happy ass” meme & jokes about him sounding like a youth minister than anything here. It presaged coloring book way more than the rest of surf presaged this. “Sunday candy”’s saving grace for me was his writing on it rather than anything musical tbh

ILX’s bad boy (D-40), Tuesday, 30 July 2019 17:30 (five years ago)

Anyway the surf comparison is more about the world building & patchwork unpredictability, the way the songs seem to spill out from the central concept rather than following some linear narrative

ILX’s bad boy (D-40), Tuesday, 30 July 2019 17:31 (five years ago)

Ran through this doing stuff around the house....seems okay? I'm a mild Chance fan, and there were definitely some moments that felt a little too canned or whatever (Ben Gibbard's voice just naturally grates on me)...but overall it didn't seem out of character for Chance. The online reaction is weird I was expecting a real drastic change in tone or direction.

Also, he's a really good rapper, both technically and flow-wise, I like his flow so he's usually enjoyable to me on that level even if I don't necessarily love the song.

think i'm w/ulysses though i don't see myself going back a lot, but the vitriol is odd to me...

Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Tuesday, 30 July 2019 17:39 (five years ago)

The greatness of Sunday Candy is the way it goes through a thousand different ideas and sounds in four minutes. Also, 'take and eat my body like it's holy' is a terrific line in a gospel-rap song. It's half about the eucharist, half about oral sex. The Pitchfork review is not that good, but the line about how Coloring Book made piety seem like an acid trip was good. Chance's faith seemed so alive, so thrilling, so fleshy and personal and sublime. Now he just sounds like any believer everywhere. This album is so musically backwards looking, and so lyrically staid, it's such a massive disappointment.

I've only listened to the song with En Vogue, and all I have to say is that it's beautiful to hear En Vogue in 2019.

yeah that was good one!

Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Tuesday, 30 July 2019 18:12 (five years ago)

Now he just sounds like any believer everywhere. This album is so musically backwards looking, and so lyrically staid, it's such a massive disappointment.

I feel like we’re listening to two totally different albums. I’m being gaslit by the exact same people who, let’s be honest, overhyped his earlier work

ILX’s bad boy (D-40), Tuesday, 30 July 2019 18:22 (five years ago)

i think the production on this album is really beautiful and spacious and very patiently crafted, and the people who think it's bland are kinda telling on themselves, like they can't deal with chance if he's not overwhelming them with thirty ideas at once. breihan calling it "bright and flat and weightless" smh, shit is dimensional

american bradass (BradNelson), Tuesday, 30 July 2019 18:32 (five years ago)

just kinda love hanging out in this particular backyard

american bradass (BradNelson), Tuesday, 30 July 2019 18:34 (five years ago)

also the shawn mendes track goes

american bradass (BradNelson), Tuesday, 30 July 2019 18:35 (five years ago)

^^ agreed, that's def one of the highlights.

i don't know about gaslighting but this def feels like he went from overrated to underrated

Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Tuesday, 30 July 2019 19:26 (five years ago)

Coloring Book was my favorite album of 2016, but I never really liked Acid Rap either. I guess he is very hit and miss for me, lol.

Frederik B, Tuesday, 30 July 2019 21:08 (five years ago)

Acid Rap and 10 Day were both better than Coloring book imo. Still haven't listened to this one yet though.

human and working on getting beer (longneck), Tuesday, 30 July 2019 21:10 (five years ago)

this album is great and i love listening to it. “five year plan” is AMAZING

american bradass (BradNelson), Tuesday, 30 July 2019 23:22 (five years ago)

i'm pretty sure "get a bag" is better than "sunday candy"

american bradass (BradNelson), Tuesday, 30 July 2019 23:25 (five years ago)

i feel that way also ... calboy sounds good on it too

ILX’s bad boy (D-40), Tuesday, 30 July 2019 23:41 (five years ago)

I really like this album? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Tim F, Wednesday, 31 July 2019 04:16 (five years ago)

ok this is really growing on me now, the production's so gorgeous and there are plenty of hooks they're just a different vibe to the sort of bigness of a lot of colouring book so that + the length made it hard to really get into at first

latest favourite is "ballin flossin"

ufo, Wednesday, 31 July 2019 05:11 (five years ago)

Ballin flossin is a highlight for me too. Also big fish — gucci sounds great on that

ILX’s bad boy (D-40), Wednesday, 31 July 2019 05:33 (five years ago)

I do want to apologize to Fred who complained that this album wasn’t corny enough which suggests tho we have v different aesthetic criteria he did listen to this album more than 99% of reviewers — this is def his least corny album at least possibly barring the dark parts of acid rap

ILX’s bad boy (D-40), Wednesday, 31 July 2019 05:59 (five years ago)

I haven't read the reviews but I was pleased that Chance has toned things down a bit? I remember enjoying Coloring Book but also finding it exhausting and I didn't return to it after a few run-throughs.

Also the dark parts of Acid Rap are probably my favourite things he's done.

Tim F, Wednesday, 31 July 2019 06:11 (five years ago)

most of the complaints i've seen have been "this is waaay too corny why does he love his wife so much lol" and i don't get that at all when colouring book went full on "god is great!" for a few tracks and this one is generally chiller and a little more low-key musically too

ufo, Wednesday, 31 July 2019 06:16 (five years ago)

only a few tracks in and his verses are really good but the choruses are mostly deflating

flopson, Wednesday, 31 July 2019 06:25 (five years ago)

arent the first two hooks just john legend and ben gibbard

ILX’s bad boy (D-40), Wednesday, 31 July 2019 06:49 (five years ago)

Yes and they’re the reason I had a bad taste in my mouth the first time through

jakey mo collier (voodoo chili), Wednesday, 31 July 2019 12:26 (five years ago)

idgi the hook on "all day long" is tight and gibbard really works on "do you remember"

american bradass (BradNelson), Wednesday, 31 July 2019 12:30 (five years ago)

this is a very me thing to post but the gibbard hook is like something green gartside would sing

american bradass (BradNelson), Wednesday, 31 July 2019 12:32 (five years ago)

I’m finally listening to this album now, and... I don’t really understand why so many people are so mad at it? Sure, there are moments that are a bit off, like the white dude screaming on the title track. But for the most part it sounds pretty good.

human and working on getting beer (longneck), Wednesday, 31 July 2019 17:08 (five years ago)

It reminds me of Three feet high and rising in a way that very few modern rap albums do, lol.

human and working on getting beer (longneck), Wednesday, 31 July 2019 17:11 (five years ago)

man, i dunno what you're hearing there! i hear a lotta different approaches but none of them sound particularly good to me. More power to you for finding something you like though!

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Wednesday, 31 July 2019 17:31 (five years ago)

Chance really walked into "wife guy" meme territory, huh

I'm DJing a friend's wedding in a few weeks, what song from this do I play?

change display name (Jordan), Wednesday, 31 July 2019 17:46 (five years ago)

Probably several tracks but “get a bag”

ILX’s bad boy (D-40), Wednesday, 31 July 2019 17:50 (five years ago)

I was going to listen to this but then I saw the name "CocoRosie"

brigadier pudding (DJP), Wednesday, 31 July 2019 19:28 (five years ago)

One of the funniest ways in which chance ended up at this point, where some of his best material is treated as the worst shit in the world, is that there’s no singular cause... instead it’s like a laundry list of little things, down to him putting cocorosie on his album, a self own so specific that explaining it to someone off ilx requires linking to fifteen year old articles about long forgotten hipster parties ... it really has been career death by a thousand paper cuts

ILX’s bad boy (D-40), Wednesday, 31 July 2019 23:44 (five years ago)

cocorosie only show up for a few seconds too lol

had never thought about comparing gibbard to gartside but their voices do have a similar weird quality to them and i can hear what brad means

ufo, Thursday, 1 August 2019 00:25 (five years ago)

it also might explain a reason why i don't really connect with either singer

jakey mo collier (voodoo chili), Thursday, 1 August 2019 00:32 (five years ago)

Timing-wise, he sure walked headfirst into 'wife guy' meme territory

change display name (Jordan), Friday, 2 August 2019 14:49 (five years ago)

Jordan I'd stick to his bigger/older hits for a wedding gig but that's just me

Papa Triste (Thee Macallan 18 Year), Friday, 2 August 2019 16:40 (five years ago)

two weeks pass...

he should have rolled into the 'i love my wife, iigh' stuff tbh, sold shirts or whatever

ILX’s bad boy (D-40), Thursday, 22 August 2019 08:30 (five years ago)

still, a great album

ILX’s bad boy (D-40), Thursday, 22 August 2019 08:30 (five years ago)

if it has a weak point to me its that he's pulled back somewhat from certain kinds of vulnerable specifics, which i understand on a level of what fame does to a person, but its unfortunate it happened on an album that is so defined by personal relationships ... nonetheless, great songs

ILX’s bad boy (D-40), Thursday, 22 August 2019 08:31 (five years ago)

the stuff that doesn't really work for me on this is down to "hot shower" (which is fun and goofy i guess but his voice is really grating on it), the part on the title track where francis yells a bunch, and "5 year plan" (which isn't really bad just relatively dull and saccharine?)

in addition to all the wife complaints i keep seeing people complain about the production being bland and lifeless which is even more baffling, i really don't know what people are listening to.

I never even got around to the last one but find the ott blowback kinda sad.

drake toosie slide has had the “salmon gucci slides” song from this album stuck in my head and it still cracks me up that chance and nicki got together for the first time as a voltron of once beloved celebs who suddenly became twitter villains

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 7 April 2020 17:06 (five years ago)

ha otm. honestly this is my favorite project of his at this point.

With most celebrities, if I see them trending my first thoughts are "Oh no, did they die?" or "Oh no, are they racist/sexist/homophobic?"

With Chance, it's "Oh no, did he say something dumb about Kanye?"
