Like this! She should release an alter ego album under the name Britney Bitch. She could call it "It's Britney Bitch." Every song could have bitch in the title.

surm, Sunday, 15 September 2013 22:16 (twelve years ago)

i actually liked some of her vocal inflections (go call the guh-vah-nah!) but i dunno the initial impression i had was that the backing was way too BEP in EDM mode for me

maybe i will come around.

Maybe a couple influences here - Nicki Minaj doing her silly Roman voice ("you've gone mahd!") and a mini-crop of actual British voices on the charts, most notably Cher Lloyd but also Jessie J a little bit.

Not sure I'm seeing the instant-classic qualities of this, it's passable but not earth-shaking. Feels empty, missing something.

That said this is more in line with the music Azealia should be making instead of whatever boring shit she's served up for the past 12 months

hope the whole album stays in manic batshit mode with no ballads, lotsa weird phrasing / cadence / put-on voices

she should collaborate with jay karan or something

oh come on, she is amongst other things telling you to work bitch, she is also being told to work bitch if she wants those things, also to work the bitch part of her etc etc. it's the reductive zero point of sex, money, music and the female image and it's f'ing great.

alright, sigh, mykki blanco

it's odd that he seems completely unaware that pop has pandered to or catered to a gay audience since forever. you could write entire books about why gay men are drawn to female pop stars but it's not news at this point. that britney has utilised some slang that possibly has gay origins is not an especially new development ("work" as a club exhortation that plays on the dual meaning of the word is another thing that has been around forever)

if anyone should be annoyed it's ciara who made a video called "work" in which she both twerked and stood on a wrecking ball nearly half a decade ago, on the same album that she talked about "swag" before any other mainstream pop star, and it all flopped

― dyl, Monday, September 16, 2013

There's one on the last album. Not bad, not British.

first I think it's time I kick a little verse! (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 18 September 2013 18:24 (twelve years ago)

why does anyone want Britney to sing ballads

WHAT DOES SAMANTHA FOX SAY (DJP), Wednesday, 18 September 2013 18:31 (twelve years ago)

aero jr heard this beat drop and immediately started dancing, like his body had told him "we have to do this" and then we had a proper kitchen dance so it gets an A from me

how anybody can hear that vocal and not feel embarrassed for Brit is beyond me though, that "English" accent is, like, worse than when Anglophiles try to adopt words like "daft" for daily use

combination hair (underrated aerosmith bootlegs I have owned), Wednesday, 18 September 2013 18:32 (twelve years ago)

This is okay to bleh; the EDM cliches are smothering, and she sounds like Britney imitating Madonna imitating Britney. But we had to endure "Hold It Against Me" before "Till The World Ends" so

first I think it's time I kick a little verse! (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 18 September 2013 18:34 (twelve years ago)

critiquing the accent on the vocal is sort of like complaining that the hoover in "Dominator" is too rough-edged

WHAT DOES SAMANTHA FOX SAY (DJP), Wednesday, 18 September 2013 18:35 (twelve years ago)

the accent is far more like nicki (knows it's a cartoon accent, sounds playful) than madonna (tries to be "proper", fails). it's funny.

"hold it against me" and "till the world ends" are in no way so far apart quality-wise that one had to be endured to get to the other

"everytime" is an incredible ballad and britney should not attempt any more if only because she can't match that ever

lex pretend, Wednesday, 18 September 2013 18:38 (twelve years ago)

lex otm about the accent. its funny. and fun. and it works in the song.

scott seward, Wednesday, 18 September 2013 18:40 (twelve years ago)

well, Femme Fatale had so many bangers that HIAM just sounds average next to TTWE, "Seal It with a Kiss," "I Wanna Go," etc.

first I think it's time I kick a little verse! (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 18 September 2013 18:40 (twelve years ago)

i wonder if this is sort of received wisdom now... like there was a genuine cultural element in the 80s or whatever in the link b/w gay culture and female pop stars but the most recent iteration feels less natural and more like "oh well this is how it's supposed to happen!" maybe i'm misreading gaga's whole fanbase though idk

either way this brit song feels more "real" to me in that sense

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 18 September 2013 20:49 (twelve years ago)

I don't remember such hamhanded appropriations of queer tropes in the eighties. Often we're the ones who read queer tropes in a hamhanded way.

after sitting with this for a few days on replay, it's really not very memorable. The initial novelty wears off pretty quickly and you're not left with much more than a decent instrumental and a series of hooks and vocal quirks not good enough to make up for the lack of an actual chorus. almost every single from Femme Fatale had more replay value than this to me.

Part of the reason this works is that it squares the circle from electroclash to EDM, and also because it reserves the huge EDM chords for the final minute like the good lord intended.

not feeling this. the instrumentation sounds stock. I think her producers found the backing track on Audio Jungle or something

Darin, Thursday, 19 September 2013 22:41 (twelve years ago)

i heard it on the radio and was anticipating something super edited but it aired all the bitches unchanged. meanwhile tho i am hearing kendrick lamar as "trick don't kill my vibe" lately so i guess i am still unsure about the status of the word "bitch" on terrestrial radio. (what happened w/ meredith brooks anyway?)

dyl, Friday, 20 September 2013 07:27 (twelve years ago)

There's a radio edit that replaces the 'bitch' with a second 'work', so it sounds like your station just didn't give a fuck about playing the radio edit.

Greer, Friday, 20 September 2013 08:15 (twelve years ago)

i mean the thing about this song is that like

it just needs more bass, the beat sounds tinny and -

if Brit were to appear on a song like I'ma Read, it would be great

but this is schlocky. the intro - "u wanna" - it's good. it's a lot of things. but this should have been more Violently Happy and less BEP.

surm, Friday, 20 September 2013 14:19 (twelve years ago)

"trick" sounds more offensive than "bitch" to be perfectly honest

TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Friday, 20 September 2013 14:20 (twelve years ago)

the best thing BEP did was co-opt Hawtin/+8-style techno and turn it into mainstream pop music so I wholly reject surm's thesis

otoh "Violently Happy" does rule so I get what he's saying but IMO if this song should have swung in another direction, it should have been even more towards F.U.S.E.

You are kind, I am jerkface (DJP), Friday, 20 September 2013 14:23 (twelve years ago)

"the best thing BEP did" is a reallllllllllll landslide of a conversation there

surm, Friday, 20 September 2013 14:29 (twelve years ago)

ha I should really clarify that because I don't think "The Time (Dirty Bit)" is their best song at all; I think it's their best idea because they wholesale stole the style for the verse music from the Hawtinverse, which is what I've wanted pop music to do for the past 20 years

You are kind, I am jerkface (DJP), Friday, 20 September 2013 14:33 (twelve years ago)

the hacky laziness of the worst and best known will.i.am productions really obscure the fact that he's done some pretty weird and exciting stuff in his time, and is certainly capable of it when he puts his back into it a bit

can't believe i'm about to earnestly respond to a cousin slappy post BUT it's because the song directly addresses women right? (even tho it panders to a gay male fanbase)

monotony, Sunday, 3 November 2013 23:48 (eleven years ago)

Wait 'til it's used to sell gift sets for the holidays.

It's way better than "Work Bitch." I find it fascinating how much Sia's guide vocals lead these singers, too—like that first verse sounds beamed in from another galaxy where Britney can belt.

maura, Sunday, 3 November 2013 23:53 (eleven years ago)

oh wow! i feel like it's been a long time since brit's had a performance this emotive. i love robo-britney and i think 'work bitch' is great, but this is exciting

Murgatroid, Tuesday, 26 November 2013 00:06 (eleven years ago)

yeah i mean strange as in...where are the hits

basically some BEP knockoffs and some katy perry demos thrown together

mums go off when i enter the building (monotony), Tuesday, 26 November 2013 00:10 (eleven years ago)

yikes, what was the last song she put out that was as boringly empty as "alien"? plodding musically, bland + unevocative lyrics, vocals not engaged with the message at all? and that's the track you start things off with??

certified skeleton fucker (reddening), Tuesday, 26 November 2013 00:45 (eleven years ago)

The dance tracks are very by the numbers and typical of will.i.am, the midtempos are largely forgettable and clearly not being song by her. This is an album of 5s and 6s waiting for a couple 8s and 9s to come in and redeem the whole thing but it never happens.

Greer, Tuesday, 26 November 2013 02:02 (eleven years ago)

wow what a disappointing and boring album :///

lex pretend, Tuesday, 26 November 2013 13:38 (eleven years ago)

It's hard to believe this album came from the same person that made something as thrilling as Blackout.

mums go off when i enter the building (monotony), Tuesday, 26 November 2013 13:44 (eleven years ago)

Britney was about as present for Blackout as Bowie was for Station to Station.

Popture, Tuesday, 26 November 2013 13:59 (eleven years ago)

well at least jamie lynn has a new single out right

dyl, Tuesday, 26 November 2013 15:45 (eleven years ago)

Never liked anything by Britney Spears (first single excepted, sort of). Especially "Toxic"--hated that. But "Scream and Shout" and "Work Bitch" are two of my favourite singles this year. I'm clearly on the wrong page when it comes to her.

clemenza, Thursday, 28 November 2013 18:15 (eleven years ago)

who decided that 10 mostly mid-tempo songs could comprise a successful album, smh. i still love 'work bitch' and 'perfume' and i think they do well paired back to back, but the rest of the album is such a disappointing slog. i enjoyed her song from the smurfs 2 movie more than most of these.

'chillin' with you' is one of the more soulless of brit's family-related songs in recent memory. like, i rarely listen to 'my baby' off of circus, but i appreciate it as a seemingly earnest expression of her love for her kids. this has no heart or soul or even familiarity at all. also the decision to have brit and jamie pronounce "with you" as "witchu" gets more embarrassing the longer the song goes on.

reddening, Wednesday, 4 December 2013 09:51 (eleven years ago)

the thing is, this is the album that by rights britney should have made 5-6 years ago. i think the fact that she kept churning out decent-to-brilliant pop despite being on drugs, incapable, heavily medicated and/or clearly disinterested made people think she could do that forever. i guess this time the disinterest finally showed.

lex pretend, Wednesday, 4 December 2013 10:45 (eleven years ago)

More the disinterest of everyone around here really. Think everyone just decided the game was up when Femme Fatale failed to shift even a million copies. Whereas before Blackout she was still defineably A Big Deal and they were going to get that record out AND make it good even if they had to physically push her into the studio and get someone else to record most of it.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 4 December 2013 10:52 (eleven years ago)

Everyone around HER, I mean.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 4 December 2013 10:52 (eleven years ago)

boring and disappointingly faceless

But it's supposedly her most personal record to date! Oh, wait.

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 4 December 2013 14:34 (eleven years ago)

i didn't even like femme fatale that much but it seemed like a huge success compared to this
