I think at one point Geir was away from ILM for a year or two, then came back. I doubt we've seen the last of him, though he definitely isn't as active as he was 10 years ago.
― Tuomas, Friday, 4 October 2013 11:58 (twelve years ago)
I can't be the only one who thinks Geir's relentless trolldom ultimately makes ILM a better place.

I bet he hated Smurfs, though, unless he thought they were some symbol of European purity or something.
I miss Geir. No matter what was thrown at him he was always polite. Was frustrating when he refused to reply to people but ILM was livelier with him.

He genuinely believed everything he wrote. Which you would hope was the case as he repeated them on ILM for a decade + all those years before on a mailing list ned,djp etc were on.At the beginning of ILM Geir was the bogeyman and ppl were terrified that he would turn up on ILM.

I yhink I prefer 10cc. Both have strong melodies (which remains the most important thing anyway), but I prefer the polished and sophisticated 10cc approach to the more "raw and basic" Badfinger approach.
Anyway, two great bands, not very related to each other (except both made melodic pop)...

the ship on this has probably passed but sincerity has absolutely nothing to do with trolling
― smang culture (DJP), Friday, 4 October 2013 16:09 (twelve years ago)
Nowadays, everything is considered 'trolling.' Unpopular opinion? That's trolling. Making a declarative statement that might not be a comprehensive view on a complex subject? Trolling. Telling a joke? That's trolling. Being tongue in cheek? Trolling. Endearingly ribbing someone? Trolling. Trolling the bridge troll? You better believe that's trolling.
― Poliopolice, Friday, 4 October 2013 16:32 (twelve years ago)
He trolled me good when I first came in here. Once I realized it was part of his act I just ignored him, except for a couple of odd times when he was actually otm or made a comment so irrational it made me forget he was geir and I had to react. No point in schooling him. Him being polite about everything made him more endearing/annoying
― Moka, Friday, 4 October 2013 16:32 (twelve years ago)
"trolling" = "saying something intentionally provocative to get a reaction"
You can absolutely 100% mean the thing you're saying and still be trolling; the troll is the provocation, hence the initial fishing analogy that led to the term in the first place (you are intentionally throwing out bait and dragging it through the water to make it more enticing to the fish so that they'll bite).
― smang culture (DJP), Friday, 4 October 2013 16:38 (twelve years ago)
Pretty sure Geir sincerely enjoyed trolling
― Tommy McTommy (Tom D.), Friday, 4 October 2013 16:47 (twelve years ago)
Posting the literally the exact same sentiment over and over again in countless, pointless variations for well over a decade? Even that's trolling!
― sleepingbag, Friday, 4 October 2013 16:48 (twelve years ago)
I stumbled across Geir's profile on RateYourMusic, which is filled with lists of his favorite albums of each year and dude was definitely standing behind what he said. Those lists are just filled with decent to bland "melodic" stuff.
― JACK SQUAT about these Charlie Nobodies (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Friday, 4 October 2013 16:59 (twelve years ago)
i'm doubtful dude was self-aware enough to realize he was trolling, just a poor boring fuck who genuinely thought that "melody or rhythm" was the most interesting topic of conversation in the world

The are the only GREAT songs on the list:
1. Nirvana - Smells Like Teen Spirit 2. U2 - One 9. R.E.M. - Losing My Religion 22. Beck - Loser 31. Radiohead - Creep 35. Oasis - Wonderwall 41. Spin Doctors - Two Princes 51. Tupac (featuring Dr. Dre and Roger Troutman) - California Love * 58. Sophie B. Hawkins - Damn, I Wish I Was Your Lover 59. Weezer - Buddy Holly 61. Sheryl Crow - All I Wanna Do 90. New Radicals - You Get What You Give
* Only in its G-funk styled album version, but I believe that is the version used in the video too.
Out of those, "Wonderwall" would be the one and only obvious pick if I was to pick the best track. That song may be one of the ten best songs of the 90s, and few hitlist items were.

The one and only thing Geir is good for is painting really bizarre alternate worlds of music, where Badfinger are really raw and basic. But most of the time, he's at best boring and at worst wantonly destructive. The number of threads he's willingly derailed and left as abandoned wrecks! No, thank you. Though I do wish he were around for some of the recent ballot polls that have been right up his alley (Simon & Garfunkel, Elton John), he'd probably make a really weird and memorable ballot.

― Sir Lord Baltimora (Myonga Vön Bontee), Friday, 4 October 2013 23:29 (twelve years ago)
the thing i always thought was funny about geir was that he didn't actually have very good taste even within the bounds of his own weird theories. like even if you accept that consciously "melodic" music with interesting chord progressions blah blah is the only kind of music there can be, there's a huge gulf between mozart or bach or whoever and the kind of middlebrow pap geir seemed to love most.
― (The Other) J.D. (J.D.), Friday, 4 October 2013 23:43 (twelve years ago)
trolling is at its most fun when you actually believe what you're saying, but geir stuck to the character so well that it's hard to believe he was ever intentionally trolling, i.e. being antagonistic for the sake of being antagonistic.
did he ever reveal much biographical information about himself or was he more of a one-issue poster?

― scott seward, Saturday, 5 October 2013 01:05 (twelve years ago)
I appreciated Geir's Crowded House love (first album is a gem), but man, he was beyond wrongheaded on drumming (which I guess we all know).
The thing that stuck in my mind was "Ringo just played beats." Which, ok, does that mean the absence of drums would have vastly improved Beatles recordings? Is the lack of any rhythmic subdivision of any kind is preferable? And if that's the case, isn't a static sine wave the pinnacle of music?

Shut of Marcello. You have the right to ignore whatever I write if you don't like it. However, I am pissed off by the attacks on the music I like. How do you pronounce "Geir Hongro"?
Gair Hongru. with the "a" pronounced as in "jam" rather than as in "bar". And the "u" roughly as in "Blur" (really a nonexistant sound in the English language though). Also, the "r" is of course the Norwegian one - like in Spanish or Italian.

I too was fairly interested with the guy: a cursory look through the thread below reveals a norwegian who was essentially disinterested in anything outside his purview (empirically limited by any useful standard), who knew Varg Vikernes ( or his brother?), had no use whatsoever for live music/ exclusively interested in super-passively absorbing recorded music, visited the U.S. once many many years ago, …aw shit… there's a lot in here for them what are interested in this very peculiar fellow…or…I dunno…maybe there are a lot of Scandinavians with whom he has a lot in common, so in context, he's not peculiar? Beats me!

You mean, you guys want me to do another post? Have mostly gone over to Facebook these days, discussing music with Norwegians in Norwegian, that is unless I waste time discussing with crackpot conspiracy theorists and blatant racists. :)
