I think I am going to see them in Philly on Sunday. They sound pretty good.

Here they are at the Pitchfork CMJ Showcase:

nostormo, Friday, 6 December 2013 16:01 (twelve years ago)

The Philly show was essentially a house show, hosted by a row house attached to a corner bodega at a West Philly intersection that would have been far sketchier if it wasn't blanketed in snow. For reasons unknown to me, the publicist put me on a guest list, but seeing the family environment I coughed up the whopping $5 admission, keen to support the scene and all.

Despite the weather, the living room was adequately filled when Perfect Pussy played. It was a short show, only a handful of songs each played more briskly than the one before with vocals buried in the "mix" (which might be a feature not a bug, based on the tape I purchased.) But the band had an interesting sound, chaotic but held together by the skin of it's sharpened teeth, with synthesizer squeals adding a surprisingly important component. But the singer was the star, a ball of righteous fury whose conviction made me want to go to war for her if she asked, or maybe if she didn't but needed the help.

I purchased their cassette, the first tape I received in any form since a record label attempted to circumvent piracy by sending out advance tapes for the black metal band Dimmu Borgir some time ago. The last time I paid for a tape? I cannot even guess. And listening to it now, I can hear (like, literally) why I refuse to join in with the hipster black metal cassette trend. But this was all they had (and a white tee-shirt which I would have bought because while I have an affinity for profane articles of clothing, I never wear white shirts) and it's a tape hiss hot mess though I will eventually be convinced the background buzz is part of the audio experience.

There is a subtle subterfuge beneath the main narrative of Perfect Pussy, one that is even more profound than the blaring speed and volume, and this can be said not only of the disarmingly personal lyrics that are purposefully difficult to decipher but also of the Joy Division-like rhythms that snake beneath the carnage. But even if all you have time for is the fury, you can do a lot worse.

I want to like this as I like noise and pop and noisy pop, but I don't know...seems flat/kinda boring. And that's not backlash talking.

post here the name of a young noisy rock band that could/should be just as big as Perfect Pussy and I'll explain why PP is probably better.

Mark, Saturday, 15 March 2014 16:24 (eleven years ago)

"noisy rock" much like "experimental music" or is another dress-up box re-enactment society.
don't get it. you need a whipcrack tight drummer & better tunes to pull this off. all i hear is a rushed plod with shouting.

Hinklepicker, Saturday, 15 March 2014 18:56 (eleven years ago)

at the risk of stepping beyond anything I know about, I heard two hardcore-sounding tracks by this band and thought they sounded like Melt Banana, but less aggressive. Then I heard an indie-rock sounding song, and didn't like it. Am I missing something, or are there a ton of bands who sound like this, 99% of which are not and never will be famous?

Dominique, Monday, 17 March 2014 22:04 (eleven years ago)

I've tried really hard to like this record, especially in light of all the people insinuating that I'm a bad person and/or bad critic if I don't, and it still... doesn't do anything much for me. it's not awful, it just doesn't distinguish itself. it sounds like a thousand vague memories of bands I've seen at death by audio and started to check my phone ten minutes in, whose names even blur together at this point. speaking of, the band name still bugs me, the same way most cutesy-congratulatory-shocking names do.

How many tracks did they have on Spotify prior to the release of the new album? Looks like a grand total of one. So 500 followers (it's actually closer to 600 according to Spotify, but don't let that get in the way of whatever point is trying to be made here) sounds like a decent amount.

no war but glass war (Lamp), Tuesday, 18 March 2014 15:13 (eleven years ago)

Lampy, the idea that 285 Kent was "important" and not just "another totally fine DIY space in a country filled with 100 totally fine DIY spaces located in parts of the country where people don't have inflated senses of self-worth" was a narrative invented and put forward by Pitchfork. Once they established that narrative, Pitchfork used it constantly to wag the dog on bands they liked, and got places like Topshop and Doc Martens to put up $$$$$$ for an ostensibly DIY venue. All the people writing about 285 Kent bands for Pitchfork/Stereogum/et al are under 30 and probably wildly underpaid so no one says "Hey, this is just like X-Ray Spex/Harry Pussy/Melt Banana but shittier and lazier" and instead approaches this with the same youthful enthusiasm I had for, like, Rhymesayers when I was that age.

adam, Tuesday, 18 March 2014 15:39 (eleven years ago)

I would like to mention that the band live is a pretty good investment of your time if you're on the fence about the band. Even playing through amps in the living room of a floor show last year (I "reviewed" it above), the singer really is intense and captivating. "They're better live" is a cliche but it fits and not only because the way the vocals are recorded might be off-putting to some.

katherine, Tuesday, 18 March 2014 17:47 (eleven years ago)

it's not like this kind of music just disappeared once indie rock started to refer to 'olive garden commercial folk rock'

I love perfect pussy, but only because of the way the recordings are produced and mixed and stuff. If they were produced differently, like if the vocals were clearer, they'd (unfairly) just be another punk band to me, and I fucking hate punk

(which, I know, they're not even punk)

Do you enjoy writing about music?
Sort of. My favorite magazine has always been Maximum Rocknroll – I've been reading it since I was 12. But some of the people that review records for Maximum lived for that punk thing of, 'I know more about music than everybody else.' The only way you can review music is by saying it sounds like this band, then you get the fucking record and it doesn't sound anything like that. I want to hear, 'I listened to this record and it made me go out into my garage and eat half a box of ho hos and smash stuff.' That will get me to listen to a record. I think there needs to be a shift in music writing. Actually, no. I think everyone should be able to write about whatever they want, but I would like to see more people writing about music that write about it differently. I just want to hear about how the record made you feel.

would the ho-ho part really distinguish one record from another, all critics considered, is the question

Sounds cool, but also sounds like any punk rock band you could see anywhere ever in the last 20 years, only w the lead vocals mixed low. Lead singer is super attractive so that probably helps.

I lied about the punk band thing too, it sounds more like cool stuff form early 2000s, house show stuff that you don't get to hear much anymore because everything is heavily stylized. The production is raw and loud!

The Philly show was essentially a house show, hosted by a row house attached to a corner bodega at a West Philly intersection that would have been far sketchier if it wasn't blanketed in snow. For reasons unknown to me, the publicist put me on a guest list, but seeing the family environment I coughed up the whopping $5 admission, keen to support the scene and all.

brimstead, Friday, 21 March 2014 22:51 (eleven years ago)

Yes the schoolyards are now clear of blood. All that can be heard is the sound of puns, obscure cutting references, well considered snark, elaborate asides and general glorious eloquence piled upon eloquence deciding who is top dog. I also note that the Ukraine situation has been thus far free of fists. Action movies are no longer relevant and boxing has lost it's former prestige. Even Mike Tyson prefers Twitter. Tis a golden age to be sure.

Hype is fun bc makes me feel part of something in distanced age of internet

sonic thedgehod (albvivertine), Saturday, 22 March 2014 00:18 (eleven years ago)

Yes. And what is meant by hype in this case? Seems to me it just means that 'Pitchfork likes it' + a couple.of other articles in supposedly influential publications. It's not like there are billboards everywhere, viral campaigns and well managed appearances on Ellen. This is pretty small scale hype I would say - 99.99 percent of the population has no idea this band exists. But I welcome a bit of excitement and hyperbole...if that's how it makes you feel then why not? I don't want to always feel jaded and cynical about new music despite that fact that age and experience are inevitably wearying. Remember how it used to feel?

Hinklepicker, Saturday, 22 March 2014 00:43 (eleven years ago)

four months pass...

Just saw them but her mic wasn't working for the entire set. Like, you couldn't hear her at all for the entire thing. It was a bit weird, you'd think they'd stop the set and give her another mic. People kept glaring at the soundman but he just kept shrugging like he couldn't do anything about it. The soundman sent someone onstage to check the mics after they'd finished, and they worked OK for the headline band, so I dunno wtf that was about.

Just noise and screaming and no musical value at all. (Colonel Poo), Saturday, 2 August 2014 22:11 (eleven years ago)

john wahey (NickB), Saturday, 2 August 2014 22:56 (eleven years ago)

Not at all? I've heard reports from shows on this (UK) tour that the vocals were way too low. I'm sceptical about some of those reports 'cause the vocals aren't necessarily that discernable on initial listens on the recorded material, and when I saw them last week in Brighton the levels seemed more or less similar to the records. They went down a storm in any case.

Basically / I Don't Wanna Be / An mp3 / 3-2-0 kb / ps (Craigo Boingo), Sunday, 3 August 2014 00:41 (eleven years ago)

A few years ago I saw a Shoppers show in a basement where the bassist's amp wasn't working at all, but rather than wait until she figured it out they played a solid third of the set without her while she messed around with it helplessly. Meredith Graves really doesn't seem like she sweats the details

Evan R, Sunday, 3 August 2014 01:17 (eleven years ago)

tbh I haven't heard anything by Perfect Pussy before, so maybe they are an instrumental band with a miming Bez dancing around in front, I did wonder.

Just noise and screaming and no musical value at all. (Colonel Poo), Sunday, 3 August 2014 09:00 (eleven years ago)

This was how they were in Brighton

http://youtu.be/5t6sqV9ooXw

One of the things with the records is gradually hearing more of the lyrics I guess, it makes sense having the lyrics swimming in the middle of the mix. I've seen other clips of them live where the lyrics were more clearly audible though.

Basically / I Don't Wanna Be / An mp3 / 3-2-0 kb / ps (Craigo Boingo), Sunday, 3 August 2014 12:48 (eleven years ago)

That's what I kept thinking I suppose, she was obviously putting a lot into singing or shouting or whatever she does, it was quite unsettling that there was no sound coming out, and most of the music seemed pretty interchangeable noise guitars so the lyrics must be part of the appeal I assume. Maybe the people at the front could hear her through proximity but the gig was in the back room of a pub so I wasn't that far away.

I started wondering if it was some kind of art statement about the female voice being drowned out by males or something.

Just noise and screaming and no musical value at all. (Colonel Poo), Sunday, 3 August 2014 12:58 (eleven years ago)

The venue manager just posted on FB - She had her hand totally covering the mic (Sound tech and I were listening through the headphones on the desk, nae vocals)

So yeah, dunno what that was about, but it was a bit shit.
