THEY ONLY COME OUT AT NIGHT! It's the Grand ILM Disco Poll voting thread (voting ends on Sunday, December 1st)

The nominations are done, and now you can vote in the Grandest of Polls, the Official ILM Disco Poll!

Here's the list of nominated tunes:

DISCO TRACKS

And here are the voting rules:

1) You can vote for 50 tracks. If that's too much, you can also send a ballot with less than 50. You can only vote for tracks that are on the nomination list, write-in votes are not allowed.

2) When you vote, number the ballot so that the highest voted track is number 1, the second highest is number 2, and so on.

3) The points for the tracks in your ballot will be counted like this:

1) ARTIST A - TRACK B 60 points
2) ARTIST C - TRACK D 59 points
3) ARTIST E - TRACK F 58 points
.
.
.
49) ARTIST W - TRACK X 12 points
50) ARTIST Y - TRACK Z 11 points

So the highest ranked track gets 60 points and the lowest 11 points (if you vote for full 50 tracks).

4) If there's a draw, the track with most votes wins. If it's still draw, the one with most #1 votes wins.

5) Every track on the nomination list counts as an separate entry in the poll, I will not collate the votes for a tune and its remixes. So if you want to vote, say, for both the original "Love Is the Message" and for the later Tom Moulton remix of it, you need to include both in your ballot.

6) Send you ballots to tuomast {dot} alho {at} gmail {dot} com. (Yes, it's "tuomast", not "tuomas".) Put the words ILM Disco Poll in the email subject line. Please also include your ILX username in the message, so I know it's not a fake ballot.

7) Voting ends on Sunday, December 1st, at 12PM (GMT).

I hate myself for missing the nominations.

If you want to campaign for your favourite disco tunes, don't jam this thread with Youtube embeds, use this other for that instead:

Just realized nobody nominated Peter Brown's "Dance With Me".

jetfan, Sunday, 3 November 2013 22:26 (eleven years ago)

Also Bell & James's "Livin' It Up". Along with the Peter Brown would have made my Top 50.

A producer subpoll would be interesting, given how crutial production is to this genre

Lee626, Monday, 4 November 2013 00:51 (eleven years ago)

I added the missing Loose Joints tune to the list. Somehow I'd missed another of Sic's nominations, Carly Simon's "Why", that's on the list too now.

Tuomas, Monday, 4 November 2013 08:54 (eleven years ago)

Is this the place to point out where certain mixes on the Spotify playlist differ from the original or preferred mix of the song?

For example, the "After Dark" by Pattie Brooks on the Spotify playlist is a remix that's radically different from the original (the original is found on the Thank God It's Friday soundtrack).

The Spotify version of "Darling" by Baccara is a re-recording that has a somewhat different vibe from the original.

Josefa, Monday, 4 November 2013 17:26 (eleven years ago)

Is this the place to point out that I don't quite "get" voting for Baccara?

midnight outdoor nude frolic up north goes south (Eric H.), Monday, 4 November 2013 18:00 (eleven years ago)

xp I've corrected a couple of items in the playlist where the correct/original version was also on Spotify. If the correct version isn't there and you think it makes a difference, maybe post a YouTube link in the campaigning thread?

snoop dogey doge (seandalai), Monday, 4 November 2013 18:09 (eleven years ago)

Cool, thanks

Josefa, Monday, 4 November 2013 18:45 (eleven years ago)

The original "After Dark" is on Spotify - it's the one that's 3:54

The original "Darling" is on Spotify also - it's the one that's 5:27 on the album The Collection

Josefa, Monday, 4 November 2013 18:57 (eleven years ago)

Anyone can add to/delete from the playlist btw.

snoop dogey doge (seandalai), Monday, 4 November 2013 19:32 (eleven years ago)

I've counted three ballots already, hopefully I'll get plenty more.

Tuomas, Monday, 4 November 2013 19:36 (eleven years ago)

I have a ballot ready to send but it feels premature when there's potentially a whole month of disco discovery ahead of me.

snoop dogey doge (seandalai), Monday, 4 November 2013 19:38 (eleven years ago)

I cast my ballot first so I'd have no temptation to vote strategically after having seen what others have voted for, but this also means there wasn't any new discoveries in my ballot... OTOH, my initial shortlist had 300 tunes, and cutting it down to 50 was already painful enough, I'm not sure if there'd been room for recent discoveries anyway.

Tuomas, Monday, 4 November 2013 19:45 (eleven years ago)

Bump!

Received a couple more ballots, already some tunes are starting to gain a lead.

Tuomas, Tuesday, 5 November 2013 18:27 (eleven years ago)

OTOH, my initial shortlist had 300 tunes, and cutting it down to 50 was already painful enough, I'm not sure if there'd been room for recent discoveries anyway.

Yeah, just made a playlist in iTunes based on what I've got from the nomination list on there, included a lot of tracks I couldn't quite recall but I think I'll end up filling my ballot just picking out the ones I already know I love.

flopson, Wednesday, 6 November 2013 19:26 (eleven years ago)

Voted! Cutting it down to just 50 was not easy, even after I arbitrarily decided to limit myself to one track per artist. Honestly have no idea what the results are going to look like...

snoop dogey doge (seandalai), Thursday, 7 November 2013 01:46 (eleven years ago)

I will probably not vote for 50 tracks. I suspect more like 25 killers. Unless people want to really bust it on the lobbying thread.

emil.y, Thursday, 7 November 2013 05:16 (eleven years ago)

Thanks for the ballot, Seandalai and everyone else who's already voted. Like I said, some tracks already seem to have gained a bit of a lead in the poll; a few of them are the usual suspects, but there's also more unexpected ones. Only 6 ballots have been cast so far, though, so obviously anything can still happen. Keep them ballots coming!

Tuomas, Thursday, 7 November 2013 09:19 (eleven years ago)

I'm working through the Spotify playlist, trying to give everything a fair shot. Have definitely heard for the first time some fantastic records that may get votes out of me. I used to think there were about 20 disco records that I REALLY loved, but apparently it's more like 200.

Josefa, Friday, 8 November 2013 16:49 (eleven years ago)

the version of fox the fox's "precious little diamond" on the spotify playlist is a terrible 00's remix, the only version of the original on spotify (in the US at least) is on a mix by LaRoux (with a few seconds of the previous track overlapping at the start):

chilli, Thursday, 14 November 2013 23:23 (eleven years ago)

I've got my ballot down to about 170 songs, and I feel like it's going to be nigh impossible to cut it even by half.

midnight outdoor nude frolic up north goes south (Eric H.), Friday, 15 November 2013 06:56 (eleven years ago)

"Be Thankful For What You Got" is one of the GOAT songs, but I'm just not voting for it in a disco poll, sorry about it.

If you didn't know it, there's also a disco version of the tune, released in 1980:

http://youtu.be/aIUpJWE76nM

I'm not sure if that if that was meant to be the version to be on the voting list, but whoever nominated it didn't specify any version, so I didn't do so either.

(The disco version isn't quite as good as the original, though, and I don't think the original is disco either, so I didn't vote for it.)

Tuomas, Friday, 15 November 2013 08:13 (eleven years ago)

but c'mon don't vote for that song-- its one of the best songs ever but doesn't belong on a disco poll

Note that version of "Precious Little Diamond" on the list is not the original (as heard on that LaRoux mix), but the Ben Liebrand remix, which is more disco (that's the reason I included it, and not the original):

Tuomas, Friday, 15 November 2013 08:27 (eleven years ago)

Have just made a playlist of all the songs I have on iTunes from the nominations list. That's 462 songs in total! Those Disco Discharge compilations have really come in handy.

Now the hard part of cutting them down to 50.

Kitchen Person, Saturday, 16 November 2013 23:13 (eleven years ago)

Oh dear, just made my first attempt at some kind of shortlist and it's 125 songs! There were at least 30 songs I was thinking had to be in my top 10. This is going to be hard.

Kitchen Person, Saturday, 16 November 2013 23:39 (eleven years ago)

WHAT is this I missed the nomination process! sad to see there's no:

larry paul emmet - evita
sheryl lee ralph - in the evening

earlene bentley - living my own life
ivan - fotonovela
soccer - time out for love
Agnetha Fältskog – Wrap Your Arms Around Me

- I like the Bee Gees more than I thought I did
- I like Earth Wind & Fire less
- poll seems to have slightly too wide a range; I felt uneasy putting in anything after about 1981
- I like you italo; but I don't really know what to do with you, sorry

Time was running through a disco playlist would've been a source of shame. I did fire it up at work yesterday with my headphones on but not plugged in, and nobody pointed it out for a couple of minutes - which could've been a massive faux pas in my rather staid workplace, but it was The Joubert Singers so I think I'm in the clear there.

I'm having a lot of fun listening to the Spotify playlist and throwing my ballot together this weekend. i was busy when nominations were going on, assumed my favorites were all famous enough to get nommed, but man, "Pick Up The Pieces" got the shaft?

some dude, Saturday, 30 November 2013 18:30 (eleven years ago)

classic of course, but never considered it disco. i understand it was on the disco charts but it's pretty clearly funk to my ears.

yeah the disco/funk line is tricky, although obv lots of nominees here are dancing right on that line

on the same note, will vote for Edwin Starr's "Contact" but would much rather be able to vote for "H.A.P.P.Y. Radio"

that was in my top 5 iirc

flopson, Saturday, 30 November 2013 22:08 (eleven years ago)

I'm stuck on 53 songs, there is absolutely nothing I want to take out. I'm looking for any reason to take a song out now. Maybe some of the songs lower down in my list don't need any extra help? Would I not class certain songs as disco? ARRRRGH!

Kitchen Person, Saturday, 30 November 2013 22:22 (eleven years ago)

Which act has most tracks? Lose one of them.
Which song would you hear in a club more than in a discotheque? Lose it.
Which is an utter classic, yet leaves you slightly cold? Out it goes.

Ismael Klata, Saturday, 30 November 2013 22:26 (eleven years ago)

Done!

Thanks for the advice Ismael, I did apply some of that thinking to my final choices. This really was as hard as the Motown poll for me.

Can't wait for the results.

g simmel, Sunday, 1 December 2013 12:00 (eleven years ago)

Fourthed. Drum machines are the schism imo - a lot of the drumming on my favourite tracks is wonderfully fluid, but when every bass drum beat is like a punch to the solar plexus, it stops being disco.

Ismael Klata, Sunday, 1 December 2013 14:04 (eleven years ago)

yeah...anytime something with an obvious drum machine pops up on the spotify playlist, i usually skip it (or, if it sounds good, listen to it but don't consider voting for it). does "Funkytown" have a drum machine, though? if so I'm making an exception for that.

OK, so this was nominated but I only discovered it on a Disco Discharge compilation over the weekend and bloody hell now I wish I'd put it in my Top 20.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IyqkePY6FKY

Deafening silence (DL), Monday, 2 December 2013 10:04 (eleven years ago)

It's an awesome tune indeed. I think it might've suffered from the fact that it hasn't been easily available until recently, when Patrick Cowley remix first appeared on the Deep Disco Culture 2 compilation, and then the original version on that Disco Discharge comp. (Apparently there was a reissue single released by Unidisc in 1993 that had both the original version and the Cowley mix, but that one seems to have been a quite limited release.) Thankfully Harmless put out a 2CD comp this year which includes pretty much all the original Tantra releases, plus the best remixes. I highly recommend that one, Tantra had more cool tunes than just "Hills of Katmandu".

Tuomas, Monday, 2 December 2013 10:48 (eleven years ago)

I nominated Cher's "Take Me Home" but it didn't show up on either the spreadsheet or the Spotify playlist. Not disco enough, maybe....

All sorts of great stuff I realized I forgot to nominate as i was putting together my ballot.

40 ballots, wow! usually the broader polls that draw from some really huge genre or category of music get a smaller voter turnout because people are daunted by the task or something, so it's cool to hear this one is bucking that trend.
