grandavis, Wednesday, 4 December 2013 17:40 (eleven years ago)

looks ok but i'm uncomfortable going to an event like this unless a hoobastank-level group gets to headline

sweat pea (La Lechera), Wednesday, 4 December 2013 18:13 (eleven years ago)

Between this and Hopscotch probably about every musician I like will be performing in one of two cities.

grandavis, Wednesday, 4 December 2013 18:14 (eleven years ago)

did Hopscotch really have Boyzone and Merzbow playing the same venue within an hour of each other?

Tip from Tae Kwon Do: (crüt), Wednesday, 4 December 2013 18:19 (eleven years ago)

oh never mind, it was a different Boyzone.

Tip from Tae Kwon Do: (crüt), Wednesday, 4 December 2013 18:20 (eleven years ago)

lol yeah the other Boyzone is pretty Merzbow friendly

combination hair (underrated aerosmith bootlegs I have owned), Wednesday, 4 December 2013 18:20 (eleven years ago)

really wonder what Reich will be playing and with who

According to the article:

Legendary modern classical composer Steve Reich will be the centerpiece of the 2014 Big Ears Festival, which will be presented in downtown Knoxville March 28-30. Reich will be joined by a number of musicians, including Radiohead guitarist Jonny Greenwood, to perform original Reich pieces. Greenwood is expected to perform Reich’s “Electric Counterpoint,” marking the first time the guitarist has play the piece in the United States.

...Ensemble Signal will perform Reich’s “Music for 18 Musicians,” which is probably Reich’s most renowned work. And Reich’s “Radio Rewrite,” a work inspired by two Radiohead songs will also be presented. So Percussion, a quartet based in New York, will present Reich’s “Drumming,” augmented by members of the University of Tennessee Percussion Ensemble.

marc and vladislav imo

1 P.3. Eternal (roxymuzak), Thursday, 12 December 2013 22:31 (eleven years ago)

I started a Spotify playlist for this so I can investigate some of the artists I don't know anything about. Didn't include everything by all the listed artists -- Cale, Reich, Hecker et al would make it pretty unwieldy -- but it'll be a jumping off point for more digging.

http://open.spotify.com/user/wmcrump/playlist/6BIrEIZVJ2SEVGMeP3bA3k

Getting pretty stoked -- friends from London and Amsterdam are making "I might come to this" noises.

WilliamC, Saturday, 21 December 2013 17:47 (eleven years ago)

Dang, the London pal already booked flight and hotel, he's not kidding around.

millions now living will never kick out the jams (WilliamC), Saturday, 21 December 2013 21:57 (eleven years ago)

two weeks pass...

i am within inches of making a decision about this, but i have a question that may determine whether or not this is worthwhile for me --

are they going to save john cale for sunday night? do they put big headliners in the middle or at the end (like most festivals ime) of the weekend? if it's at the end, i would have to miss JC and that would be terrible.
if there is evidence that they may put him in the middle, i could live with missing jonny greenwood or w/e.

mambo jumbo (La Lechera), Sunday, 5 January 2014 16:32 (eleven years ago)

Wish I had any wisdom, but the festival is so new I can't see many trends in past scheduling.

oldbowie (WilliamC), Sunday, 5 January 2014 18:20 (eleven years ago)

Johnny Greenwood is playing a Steve Reich piece. I mean, I'm def in the LOL RADOIHEAD ATEASE camp too, but he's not gonna be bloppin out "fake plastic trees" or somethin

lisa 龜 (Whiney G. Weingarten), Sunday, 5 January 2014 19:47 (eleven years ago)

I figured as much, I just have a solo 8 hour drive to budget for and I'm wondering if I can live with missing Sunday night.

mambo jumbo (La Lechera), Sunday, 5 January 2014 20:11 (eleven years ago)

take monday off work

lisa 龜 (Whiney G. Weingarten), Sunday, 5 January 2014 20:43 (eleven years ago)

as tempting as reich-bloppin is, my job doesn't really let me take a day off whenever i want, plus i would have to be gone on friday as well. anyway, i'll figure it out. just wanted to see if someone had insight about the schedule.

mambo jumbo (La Lechera), Sunday, 5 January 2014 20:52 (eleven years ago)

when terry reilly was a headliner he played on more than one day iirc? vastly different sets tho, one was an organ concert

1 P.3. Eternal (roxymuzak), Monday, 6 January 2014 21:45 (eleven years ago)

but yeah little consistency from year to year

1 P.3. Eternal (roxymuzak), Monday, 6 January 2014 21:46 (eleven years ago)

also come to this and lets hang out!

1 P.3. Eternal (roxymuzak), Monday, 6 January 2014 21:46 (eleven years ago)

i really want to! maybe if i just buy the ticket, everything else will slowly come together.

mambo jumbo (La Lechera), Monday, 6 January 2014 22:10 (eleven years ago)

Yeah, Riley played 4 different concerts over the 3 days.

oldbowie (WilliamC), Monday, 6 January 2014 23:07 (eleven years ago)

ok, ticket has been purchased. when should i start worrying about arranging lodging?

mambo jumbo (La Lechera), Monday, 6 January 2014 23:40 (eleven years ago)

yay!

I still need to book a hotel room too :/

Mmm yes hello (crüt), Monday, 6 January 2014 23:42 (eleven years ago)

Fwiw we have an upstairs bedroom with its own bathroom that a couple ppl can crash in if you want. There's a bed and air mattress. Email if you want -- jmaysh4rk AT gee mail. (That 4 shd be an a, obv.) We're just outside downtown.

something of an astrological coup (tipsy mothra), Monday, 6 January 2014 23:53 (eleven years ago)

iiiiiinteresting!! is downtown where we want to be staying?
last time i was in knoxville we stayed in a cabin near the park (what a bummer to go all the way there and not go hiking but i doubt there will be time for that, unless there is!)

mambo jumbo (La Lechera), Tuesday, 7 January 2014 00:42 (eleven years ago)

to clarify -- last time i went there specifically to go hiking; this time, no (or maybe?)

mambo jumbo (La Lechera), Tuesday, 7 January 2014 00:43 (eleven years ago)

All the Big Ears stuff is downtown. Hiking stuff not so much, though there are some nice trails not far across the river.

something of an astrological coup (tipsy mothra), Tuesday, 7 January 2014 00:46 (eleven years ago)

dammit I am gonna be ready the next year this thing happens, I had a different vacation scheduled in VA for the week before and there is just no way I can swing it this time

TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Friday, 10 January 2014 17:55 (eleven years ago)

this fest is like one act from getting me to go. Like, if they announce Matana Roberts or Ben Frost or Laurel Halo or something, I'll take it as a sign than I can spare the $150. But that's a lotta money esp when you factor in travel, accommodations, food, etc

Jimmywine Dyspeptic, Friday, 10 January 2014 23:05 (eleven years ago)

i'd have somewhere to stay, but I can't take off work. :(

★feminist parties i have attended (amateurist), Friday, 10 January 2014 23:16 (eleven years ago)

Esa-Pekka Merkerson (get bent), Saturday, 11 January 2014 06:16 (eleven years ago)

and jimmywine otm, if i hadn't already seen some of these acts i'd be there in a heartbeat.

Esa-Pekka Merkerson (get bent), Saturday, 11 January 2014 06:18 (eleven years ago)

plus the money thing, but ya know

Esa-Pekka Merkerson (get bent), Saturday, 11 January 2014 06:19 (eleven years ago)

Checked the website last night and there are still some $150 passes left before they move up to the $175 passes. Nowhere near selling out completely, unless they're only selling a half dozen $175 passes.

I often fantasize about helping organize one for New York. I think the two biggest problems are
A) New Yorkers are generally spoiled fucking babies and go "ennngh I can see [band] any time" whenever someone brings an amazing festival to their doorstep (ie, see ATP's troubles in NYC)
B) The cost of putting up, say, Merzbow or Neubauten or Dead C or whoever in a hotel is way more cost prohibitive in NYC than, say, Knoxville or Hopscotch's North Carolina

lisa 龜 (Whiney G. Weingarten), Thursday, 16 January 2014 21:51 (eleven years ago)

Has there ever been an American festival that has pulled off an avant thing of this scale?

Maybe the old New Music America festivals in the 80s/early 90s (if they lasted that long)? That tended to be more classical avant-garde focused, but not exclusively.

_Rudipherous_, Saturday, 1 February 2014 17:25 (eleven years ago)

Weirdly underdocumented online. I'm sure most of the shows were videotaped, but there's hardly anything on youtube. Not finding pdfs of programs either. The only one I went to was the Philadelphia festival, in 1987.

I'm a little bummed that the Sunday Reich hoedown is going to be reserved seating (I assume everybody got that email). Maybe some seat swapping can happen.

a duiving caTCH, a stuolllen bayeeeess (jamescobo), Thursday, 27 March 2014 07:17 (eleven years ago)

I'm gonna defer on barbecue to people who eat meat, but places in general worth a look for lunch or dinner: Tomato Head, Knox Mason, Shuck, the Bistro (right next to the Bijou, where lots of the shows are), the French Market (speaking of crepes...). Best beer selection is at Suttree's, conveniently located next to the liquor store.

How about an ILX-fast on Saturday morning? Like 10:30 or 11 at the Bistro? They have good brunches and bloody marys.

is there a lot of bag checking at this festival? asking on account of my backpack, which may be unwieldy to bring if it's going to be searched every time i go into a venue. at pitchfork they made everyone relinquish their umbrellas, of all things, and it rained every single night. i realize it probably won't be like that, but i don't want to lose my nail clippers because someone thinks i'm gonna go apeshit on laraaji.

I totally went to Wild Honey; the guy and his wife were like the nicest people on the planet. Kept the store open late to chat about records & let me browse, gave me a thousand awesome recommendations, even gave me a lift back to my hotel. To be fair I did spend more than I've ever spent in one record store before (including both the Mayuzumi & Walker records mentioned upthread) but I got the feeling that they would have offered anyway; they were solid folks.

They were also totally flattered to learn that people are talking about their shop on the internet; they were both like aww

I like this town.

When Dave and I picked up our stuff at the ticket office we pretty much had our choice of seats for sunday's Reich finale , and we could pick a seat for The friend who's not getting in until late this afternoon. espring (amateurist), Friday, 28 March 2014 17:49 (eleven years ago)

It's really cool how everyone gets into the big ears spirit. I just saw that the First Christian Church downtown is having a John Cage piece for prepared piano as their service music on Sunday!?

1 P.3. Eternal (roxymuzak), Friday, 28 March 2014 18:02 (eleven years ago)

Xpost I definitely left them a glowing yelp review; they earned it big time. The mayuzumi stays with me, though, sorry. To anyone else reading this thread, you're doing yourself a disservice if you don't go; I bought a stupid amount of records (my receipt is two pages long) but there were dozens of albums I had to force myself to put back on the shelf.

Last night I went to some pub down on Market Street and saw a series of bar bands cover the greatest hits of the mid-90s. Then I got so drunk that it took me three hours to walk back to my hotel (a 15-minute walk away).

That was prob the preservation pub, they are literally Satan

1 P.3. Eternal (roxymuzak), Friday, 28 March 2014 19:10 (eleven years ago)

the other places to go for vinyl:

1) hot horse in old city: pretty decent collection of vinyl, some surprises, hard to predict what they'll have at any given day. downsides are that much of the vinyl that's not in one of the "new arrivals" bins is beat up pretty bad. but it's worth a trek. it's also a second-hand store, they got clothes in back and some instruments, guitar pedals, etc. up front. folks working there are pretty cool. i've found some weird electronic and new age LPs here, and once they were selling someone's impressive collection of sublime frequencies CDs which I gobbled up.

2) raven records: maybe the best all-around place in Knoxville. tons of LPs, wide variety of genres, maybe not much of the sort of "out there" stuff wild honey always has, and doesn't have that personally-curated-by-awesome-people feel. but tons of stuff, and good prices. also has the best vintage poster collection in... probably in the state, maybe in all Appalachia, not that I've been everywhere. raven also has some stuff for sale at a nearby antique mall but I forget the name. fun place to shop, honestly. i usually end up buying a few LPs and far too many posters.

3) lost and found: lots of people like this place. the couple who run it are very nice and they have a great store dog. they also have tons of fairly inexpensive bluegrass vinyl. the rest of it though is way too much familiar dad-rock for my tastes.

4) basement records. under new management, now much better organized and more new-used stuff coming in. but it's still (mostly) 70s/80s dadrock, and almost ALL of the jazz is lite/smooth jazz. i would only go here if you're starving for something to do or driving out that way.

5) disc exchange. vinyl section horrifyingly overpriced for new vinyl, used vinyl is almost all in horrible shape and overpriced. don't bother.

6) mckay's. giant 2nd-hand book shop, with music upstairs. DO. NOT. BOTHER. seriously.

espring (amateurist), Friday, 28 March 2014 19:45 (eleven years ago)

Yep, preservation pub. Like three different people urged me to go there too. Plus the hand stamp they gave me on entry looks like some white power group's symbol.

I am definitely down for brunch tomorrow.

The main thing I learned from the opening reception is that I've been mispronouncing Steve Reich's name for years - I've been saying 'Ryke' rather than 'Ryshe.'

Just got back from So Percussion w/ Glen Kotchke & some other act I've never heard of before. Glen & So did an AWESOME version of a Reich drum piece. Now I'm at Scruffy City Hall to see Colin Stetson; this place is super tiny. Mega stoked for this.

a duiving caTCH, a stuolllen bayeeeess (jamescobo), Saturday, 29 March 2014 02:16 (eleven years ago)

sund4r this festival is so goddamned good. I went to Lollapalooza once back in the 90s and then a couple of Coachellae, but one day in this one beats the shit out of both of them. W those festivals there's always a few bands you're always psyched for and then a bunch of other ones where you're just like okay whatever I guess I could see them but it's not like I can't see them some other time. This one, every other act is someone where it's like holy shit, I actually get to see this happen live!!!! And then they close the whole thing out on Sunday with like seven solid hours of Steve Reich ffs. I can't imagine how much the ones where Glass and Riley were the artists in residence; I probably would have passed out from the sheer owningness of it all.

I am drunker than a shitting bitch and dead center five rows back from the stage for John fucking Cale. I can't believe how much I don't hate my life right now.

Laughter workshop was (IMO) equal parts genuinely pleasant and unsettling. We had to make prolonged eye contact with our neighbor and say mantras. We were encouraged to consider our bodies as 'water bodies'. I also enjoyed some genuine larfs. The guy I was eye contacting turned out to be Crüt's friend.

Glenn Kotche's drum kit was bazonkers. Crazy stuff with keys and roto-tiller blades. Currently chilling at the coffee shop in the sq waiting for Jenny Hval.

Ribot/The Kid was great, Oneohtrix also great (I was unfamiliar w/ prior). Caught about 10 minutes of Helen Money, was not really impressed. Thinking Laraaji, Orcutt, Television, Nazoranai, but dinner first. Great to see everybody at the bistro this morning.

WmC, Saturday, 29 March 2014 21:18 (eleven years ago)

Nope I've just been lone-wolfing it all day. Oneohtrix has the set of the weekend so far - I didn't even think about getting up & going to Jonny Greenwood (who was incredible) until that whole thing wrapped up.

a duiving caTCH, a stuolllen bayeeeess (jamescobo), Sunday, 30 March 2014 01:39 (eleven years ago)

Hours later and I still haven't recovered from Drumming; I may not ever fully recover. Television were a good way to end the night though! Then again I'd probably watch an ass shit for two hours if I got to watch it in the Tennessee Theater; what a magnificent venue.

SERIOUSLY THOUGH DRUMMING.

I feel like this festival is blowing my mind from thousands of miles away. I wish I were there.

obliquity of the ecliptic (rrrobyn), Sunday, 30 March 2014 04:37 (eleven years ago)

Also kinda surprised I didn't know to catch Nils Fram's whole set; I have infinite love for that type of expansive composition, plus I would have put another hour of my day to good use rather than waiting around the Bijou's lobby for Laraaji to get the fuck on with it (assuming he actually did at some point; I was starting to wonder if the whole thing was just some elaborate piece about patience or whatever. Good thing I love so much of his music.)

a duiving caTCH, a stuolllen bayeeeess (jamescobo), Sunday, 30 March 2014 04:42 (eleven years ago)

Yeah So Percussion was straight-up transcendent. I loved the giant standing ovation for them and Reich too. Rock-show level of enthusiasm.

Susanna was good. Tom Verlaine was great. Ribot Cubano show was too packed for me, so now I'm waiting for Nazaronai to go on at 1. Don't know how long I'll last -- long day. But determined to see at least some of it.

something of an astrological coup (tipsy mothra), Sunday, 30 March 2014 04:54 (eleven years ago)

Also, had funny experience coming out of the Susanna show. I was exiting with three equally middle-aged friends, and I heard a beardy 20-something say to his friend, "Well, there's the Susanna demographic."

I'm thinking of ordering bowling shirts for all if us with that on it.

continually topping myself (flamboyant goon tie included), Sunday, 30 March 2014 05:49 (eleven years ago)

So far I would rank what I've seen as follows:

1. DRUMMING SERIOUSLY.
2. Oneohtrix Point Never (I feel so bad for my neighbors because I am gonna go through the Rifts box set disc by disc as soon as I get back to LA
3. Jonny Greenwood (he played Scelsi! And Xiannakis! And some weird piece where the audience got to play along on their mobile phones which was much less ugh than it sounds like; I am like a major-league black-hole introvert [as evidenced by my failure to meet anyone other than Crut] who recoils in horror at the idea of participating in things but the way this played out was really cute. Really hoping someone recorded this - Big Ears people, if you're listening, put together a vinyl box set of performances from this weekend and just name your price.)
4. Nils Fram (I am basically going to buy ever record he's ever put out as soon as I get home)
5. The Tennessee Theater as a whole; it deserves it's own entry here
6. Colin Stetson at scruffys town hall (dudes a force of nature, plus his crotchety stage banter w the sound guy was v amusing)
7. Hecker at the Bijou (monster set; I loved it all so much)
8. Dawn of MIDI (they were new to me but sure dropped some awesome heavy psyche on everyone; it was a nice palate-cleanser for the Oneohtrix/Jonny/Nils Fram/DRUMMING pandemonium)
9. The Kid with Ribot's accompaniment - such a gentle and quaint way to start the day, although I seem to be way less into Ribot than a lot of folks here; he's nice and all but I'm more in the mood for big sweeping psychedelic statement shows and his stuff just ain't that)
11. This truly amazing Brie sandwich I got at Tomato Head - that place makes some good ass food.
12. Television (they had some sick solos, clearly had a whole ton of fun exploring the studio space and acting like a bunch of anti-try-hards, and they absolutely crushed Marquee Moon which is all you could really hope for given the circumstances)
13. John Cale (meh, although I did get a copy of Paris 1919 from Wild Honey so it wasn't a total letdown)
14. So Percussion w/ Glen Kotchke & Buke and Case (just meh, although one big thing I learned this weekend is that watching So Percussion do anything is totally and unequivalently worth seeing in any context. the Kotchke stuff was WAY more fun than the part with the band though.)
15. All the mortifying buttrock i heard that night i went to the preservation pub

Wish I'd caught:
- Mark McGuire (his solo stuff is hit or miss with me and I'd seen him play with Emeralds when they were opening for someone a few years ago)
- Julia Holter (I love her stuff but as described above I was in the mood for uncompromising rigorous music so I passed. She plays a bunch in LA so hopefully I can finally make it happen)
- Dean Wareham coulda been fun, also another opportunity to bask in the splendor of the Tennessee Theater
- I missed all the Earth & Keiji Haino stuff; i know absolutely fuck-all about that stuff so i figured I'd kick it at the Tennessee and not take up space a super diehard fan deserved more than i did
- Would have loved to have seen the Kotchke set at the Square Room but OPN.

ANYWAY. Stupendous festival all around - i made friends with those nice folks at wild honey and bought a ruinously huge box of records, i saw four consecutive performances each of which resulted in me setting a new record for "fastest i ever jumped out of my seat to give the performers a literal standing o, and i got to see so much of it in a venue as truly splendid as the Tennessee Theater. A+++++++ would definitely go again in a heartbeat.

SORRY FOR POSTING A MILLION POSTS; THANK YOU FOR YOUR CONTINUED PATIENCE. Also sorry if I was being an antisocial non-joiner to any ilxors; I mean well, I just don't want to be an imposition. Can we go get lunch tomorrow before like 1 or 2? Preferably barbecue since i haven't had any cue since i got into town but i know some of y'all are non-carnivores and I DESPERATELY don't want to be a bother. I haven't had a bad meal in this city yet so I'm all ears (no pun intended). Plus this'll give me a chance to regale y'all with misadventures i got myself into which i shouldn't post about on google-indexable forums. Plus its the least I can do after being such a standoffish twit; if we can talk about T*mb13r in any capacity i think i can expense our whole meal. WHADDYA SAY GANG

Scott and I were talking about who AC might shoot for as artist in residence next year. He's gotten the big 3 of minimalism so I figure he may have to go in a different direction. I suggested a John Adams vs. John Luther Adams cage match -- two men enter the city, only one gets to keep the name.

Or maybe Laurie Anderson.

The only way to get me to buy a ticket faster than having Steve Reich as the artist in residence would be to announce Brian Eno as the artist in residence. Lord, to hear Music for Airports in the Tennessee Theater. Adams, Anderson, and/or Sanders would be amazing too.

Other artists I'd love to see on next year's billing (although idk if they've played before): Harold Budd, Gavin Bryars (JUST DO THE SINKING OF THE TITANIC W/ PHILIP JECK AND ALTER EGO), Emeralds, Rene Hell

Not that it really matters; I'll be back next year regardless of the lineup. I had about as much fun as I think I'm capable of having.

did you guys take the survey? you get to suggest three artists for next year's festival and you might win passes...(that's why i did it)

you have til 4/11 i think

we slowly invented brains (La Lechera), Wednesday, 2 April 2014 18:40 (eleven years ago)

It would be cool to win those passes. I suggested Eno, Laurie Anderson and John Adams vs. John Luther Adams cage match. (Also Zorn in the last comment box.)

WilliamC, Wednesday, 2 April 2014 18:42 (eleven years ago)

I suggested Black Music Disaster, Faust, and Circle.

coops all on coops tbh (crüt), Wednesday, 2 April 2014 18:49 (eleven years ago)

Oooh Circle-- that would be cool, esp if they played Pharoah Overlord stuff too. I suggested Pharaoh Sanders, Daniel Fichelscher, and my drum teacher because I want him to be famous and also because he deserves it.

Pharaoh Sanders/Pharaoh Overlord collab

they could have held a festival with that lineup inside a literal ass and I would have been there with bells on. also as it turns out Knoxville owns quite a lot

WilliamC, Thursday, 3 April 2014 02:09 (eleven years ago)

I have nothing against Tennessee except for the fact that it's a few hundred miles away. And I don't really think of myself as being into "avant-garde" stuff.

i'm just waiting for the moment he's like

"no, really, i have a lot of respect for thomas kinkade"

and a bunch of beardos' mouths drop open and then he's like

"nah, pysch, i'm gonna act moody again and start screeching."

beardos: nod.

chatanooga is a much more bourgie (sp?) town than knoxville. but there's no denying it's downtown is a lot prettier. knoxville kind of fucked up their downtown a long time ago.

last time i was in chattanooga it seemed kinda desolate???

coops all on coops tbh (crüt), Friday, 4 April 2014 19:01 (eleven years ago)

hmm, that wasn't my experience. but knoxville fucked up their riverfront, built highways and onramps etc. all over their downtown, and knocked down too many old buildings only to replace them with concrete monstrosities. chatanooga did a better job retaining the (archiectural, if nothing else) character of their downtown and walking over the lit-up bridges in the evening is really pleasant. i admit all the shops catering to yuppies (you know, cupcake store, etc.) is pretty deadening and i prefer knoxville to that, but you can't get around the fact that a lot of central knoxville is just ugly. i like it tho.

espring (amateurist), Friday, 4 April 2014 19:05 (eleven years ago)

chatanooga has an unexpected contingent of hipsters and like vegan/green lifestyle folks and a good farmers market etc. knoxville does too but they never seem present all in the same place the way it feels w/ chattanooga sometimes.

espring (amateurist), Friday, 4 April 2014 19:06 (eleven years ago)

i've never been to chattanooga but i looooooooved knoxville

Mayor Manuel (La Lechera), Friday, 4 April 2014 19:13 (eleven years ago)

yeah, i like knoxville, it's just that 2/3 of their downtown is a big "what could have been"

espring (amateurist), Friday, 4 April 2014 20:24 (eleven years ago)

chattanooga >>> knoxville w/r/t waterfront

we really intelligently built a highway directly adjacent to it and put a sewage treatment plant there, lol

xp - LL, Orcutt was great! He ran through a short set and said "uh wow, I still have nine minutes in this slot, anybody have any ideas?" Some guy called for "Rocky Top" (twice) and he said "well, that gives me a little idea..." and attacked "Camptown Races" for about a minute and a half, then played one more short piece then out.

GAAAAAHHHH -- from the most recent mass email:

During Big Ears, we were fortunate enough to hear master musicians Wordless Music Orchestra perform composer John Adams’ monumental “Shaker Loops.” Now, on the heels of his recent Pulitzer Prize win, the composer himself will be visiting Knoxville for an Earth Day celebration and performance presented by UT Percussion Studies and Nief-Norf. We're thrilled to see this event being hosted in our own fair city, and we'll certainly be in attendance next Tuesday! Read all about the event here.

I'm sure this isn't the first or last time somebody's mixed up JA and JLA, but dog dammit somebody done fucked up. At least the press release itself doesn't repeat the error (URL notwithstanding) -- http://www.bigearsfestival.com/ut-percussion-studies-nief-norf-host-composer-john-adams/

I wouldn't be skeptical of Thurston's curatorial choices — I think he's more than capable of putting together a fantastic Big Ears lineup — but I think using him as an anchor would be a little... off-message I guess? Also I'm still mad at him and his recent music has been boring.
