no biggie, I just think the suggestion that a pizza-themed velvet underground band is primarily aimed at bringing in major bank for a (former?) celebrity. I mean, selling out the Black Cat at $15/head isn't exactly a shitload of money for the guy who starred in the home alone movies.

signed, J.P. Morgan CEO (Hurting 2), Thursday, 23 January 2014 03:02 (eleven years ago)

Hurting 2, this is just a general follow-up, not looking to blow this up, but to be clear here, I think Culkin is the least blameworthy person involved, and I sincerely doubt he needs the money (though I do not know the ins and outs of his ability to cash in on his big hit movies from his childhood, my assumption is that turning 18 set Culkin up for life for the most part, but I could be wrong). Generally, that was not my point at all, I was just feeling like being a counter to all the "oh its just innocuous, folks are just having fun" nature of this as true as that may be for some.

Still, selling out the Black Cat at $15 a head is a shitload of money for most bands, and tons of folks I know balk at paying even $10-15 for a (good) band. Generally I got over this kind of thing a long time ago, and I certainly am not angry or losing sleep over it, but I do find it a bit rich that an 8-minute medley of half-assed rewrites based around pizza is not only selling out (in an extremely short timeframe) but also getting scalping action for serious cash. It is basically the public that is dissapointing me, the band is a sidebar (though I don't think they are funny/good enough to warrant much attention, but for some reason WFMU, ILM, and the public in general is not only giving them a free pass but eating it right up for the most part). Just my particular moment to be an aging curmudgeonly music fool, I get that the stakes are low but maybe I am pissed that they are just getting so damn low, if you know what I mean.

grandavis, Thursday, 23 January 2014 14:56 (eleven years ago)

grandavis kinda otm. I was gonna post yesterday after hearing the WFMU session, this is kind of like if Weird Al albums consisted entirely of the first draft of one of the polka medleys. I know the haphazard nature is a large part of the appeal, but some of the songs they are parodying they don't even really seem to have worked out the proper chords.

signed, J.P. Morgan CEO (Hurting 2), Thursday, 23 January 2014 15:50 (eleven years ago)

I kind of find the half-assedness of the band to be part of the fun. It's very much a one-off, not meant to last kind of thing. Honestly it was a project I only enjoyed for a few hours and then forgot about, and I think that's about what it deserves. I know they sold out the Black Cat and all, but I don't think this is going to have a very long life or catapult them to higher heights.

signed, J.P. Morgan CEO (Hurting 2), Thursday, 23 January 2014 15:53 (eleven years ago)

Now, would this thing even get this kind of traction if not for Macaulay Culkin's name attached (and his presumable connections etc.), almost certainly not. But I can't really be mad at him for that.

signed, J.P. Morgan CEO (Hurting 2), Thursday, 23 January 2014 15:56 (eleven years ago)

Yeah, people might be buying tickets because they think it would be fun to see a huge icon from their childhood play songs about pizza and not because he’s killing the novelty music game with his wit and sick chops. I’d pay 15 bucks to see Mac tbh.

circa1916, Thursday, 23 January 2014 15:58 (eleven years ago)

I will say I didn't realize the Black Cat still charges only $10 or $12 for so many shows. A lot of those bands would be pricier in NYC I think.

There are 5 people in the band, and equally dividing 15 minutes between them gives each person 3 minutes of effort. And these people will be getting free food, free drugs, free places to stay, free hugs, etc. Meanwhile there are people who have been freezing all winter who will be ignored, or likely, exploited for iPhone photos and authenticity stories.

That is one needlessly long piece about a not very interesting or cool story bro.

By that Friday, it felt like the entire Internet had turned against me. Hundreds of people, maybe thousands, maybe millions, thought I was a jerk. Hundreds told me so on Twitter, dozens on Facebook, a few over email, including a producer of The Drew Carey Show. - See more at: http://kernelmag.dailydot.com/issue-sections/features-issue-sections/15148/macaulay-culkin-pizza-underground-disaster/?fb=dd#sthash.UKGvC7qX.dpuf

This writer seems to have very little sense of scale when it comes to the internet.

missed that there was an "uproar" over her article ... and i'm still not sure i understand why anyone cared? what was the problem exactly? just that it was mean to mac?

tylerw, Wednesday, 2 December 2015 19:33 (nine years ago)

Both the reaction and her reaction to the reaction seem blown out of proportion. It was a mean article and not that funny. Culkin and the writer both escaped relatively unharmed and afaict few people noticed or remembered that it happened.

on entre O.K. on sort K.O. (man alive), Wednesday, 2 December 2015 19:36 (nine years ago)

she was an unknown freelance writer w no power and now all these famous people were outing her as a bully in front of a huge audience.

AdamVania (Adam Bruneau), Wednesday, 2 December 2015 19:36 (nine years ago)

the sum impact of the whole thing is probably the article itself and her nerves for a week. i don't think she is saying anything more really.

It only got worse. The next day, Patton Oswalt—comedian, professional troll, wildly outspoken opponent of Internet outrage—sent several tweets to his millions of followers criticizing my tone. “Way to topple the mighty,” one read.

I couldn’t help but think that if I was a comedian myself, Patton Oswalt—someone who pretends to mock oppressed people (like the transgendered) in service of proving that nothing in comedy should be out of bounds—wouldn’t have been so disapproving; that my blog post would have fallen under the welcoming umbrella of free speech in comedy. Instead, I was a journalist trying to be funny and therefore not allowed to hurt anyone’s feelings, even those of millionaire celebrities and their well-compensated publicists. I wasn’t part of the protected comedy class, and so I wholly deserved the scorn he heaped upon my feeble attempts at mean-spirited humor. Or so it seemed.

AdamVania (Adam Bruneau), Wednesday, 2 December 2015 19:37 (nine years ago)

Civilians, journalists, famous comedians like Nikki Glaser, comedy fans: all came out against me, saying I was bitter, a failure, jealous, fat, a terrible journalist, a terrible person, a bitch, an asshole, a cunt, that I would rot in hell

AdamVania (Adam Bruneau), Wednesday, 2 December 2015 19:39 (nine years ago)

In large part it's just too long in relation to the interest/significance of the story, lots of mundane detail that could be left out.
