Ballot: http://docs.google.com/forms/d/1IQ4ICRvEzhsG-xwd5T3hr8oqPMJI7UMFzNdTXMnGMeQ

The procedure is simple: enter your tracks and album ballots (up to 25 items on each), one item per line, in the appropriate fields below. You can choose one of three ballot types, which determine how points are allocated to each item you vote for:

(1) Weighted: The first item on your ballot receives 50 points, the second receives 48 points, and so on, until the 25th item receives 2 points.

(2) Unweighted: Each item on your ballot receives 26 points.

(3) Mixed: To submit a mixed ballot, you must divide your ballot in two with an extra blank line. The upper portion of the ballot will be treated as weighted, with the first item receiving 50 points, and so on. The lower portion will be treated as unweighted, in that all items will receive the same number of points. The score allocated to items in the unweighted portion is calculated as 26 minus the number of items in the weighted portion (this is so that any weighted, unweighted or mixed ballot consisting of 25 items will allocate a total of exactly 650 points).

2 Chainz - Feds Watching

Ok, I'm still finishing out the noms list but if there's stuff missing post it here and I'll check back in ~10 mins.

Melissa W, Monday, 6 January 2014 01:53 (eleven years ago)

YEAH

Bee OK, Monday, 6 January 2014 01:56 (eleven years ago)

Yeah. The lists are just for uniformity in voting. Any typos/capitalization/etc will be cleaned up for the top 77 rollouts.

Johnny Fever, Monday, 6 January 2014 01:59 (eleven years ago)

Okay, spreadsheets are updated, which means the txt pages linked above are updated. And those are easier to copy/paste from than the spreadsheets, so...yeah.

Johnny Fever, Monday, 6 January 2014 02:06 (eleven years ago)

Use this thread to ask questions about the voting procedure, announce to the world that you have exercised your franchise and remind/motivate/shame others who haven't voted yet. You won't get an automatic confirmation email when you submit your ballot but if you post here I'll double-check to make sure we've received your vote.

If you want to rustle up support for your favourite albums and tracks, you want the Campaigning Thread instead.

flopson, Monday, 6 January 2014 02:38 (eleven years ago)

yeah always ignored these and rolled my eyes at them in the past (i mean really by this point enough lists already) but then actually looking at last years it was more fun and useful than some other year end lists so why not

balls, Monday, 6 January 2014 02:41 (eleven years ago)

Over the past 2 years I'd say I discovered more music (and with more fun) with the 2011 and 2012 ilxor polls than anything in the press, friends or record shops. It's kind of a honor to be participating this year.

Van Horn Street, Monday, 6 January 2014 02:48 (eleven years ago)

The tracks poll is more work than I expected.

Van Horn Street, Monday, 6 January 2014 04:30 (eleven years ago)

That took way longer than I expected, because I had to cut so many of my favorite tracks, and I also listened to/liked way less albums this year than I thought. Anyway, I have V O T E D.

Murgatroid, Monday, 6 January 2014 04:30 (eleven years ago)

Not sure who chronochromie is on Spotify, but thanks for the heavy lifting on the tracks playlist right now.

yo i noticed that Imaginational Anthem 4 was nominated and that must have been a mistake, wasn't it released in 2010? maybe the nominator meant "Imaginational Anthem v 6 : Origins of American Primitive Guitar" or perhaps the imaginational anthem vol 1-5 compilation box set released this year?

why is this in the album nominations

From discogs: "This is an exclusive Record Store Day 2013 release limited to 1,000 copies.
Includes a disc of previously unreleased material and a 32 page booklet featuring lyrics, artwork, photos and notes by Jad & David Fair. "

Johnny Fever, Monday, 6 January 2014 06:46 (eleven years ago)

also the Yusef Lateef record wasn't rereleased this year afaik.

totally. 25 is perfect for albums, by then i'm pretty much deciding between various albums that are worthy of being heard and discussed but not top-tier by any means. 25 is nowhere near enough for trax but i'm grateful for that many, given how many publications habitually ask for top 10s, which is just a stupidly tiny amount to cut it down to

It's my own fault for not saying anything in the nominations thread but now I come to vote I'm saddened to see Moonface's 'Julia With Blue Jeans On' didn't make it in. A top 5 of 2013 for me.

Internet Alan, Monday, 6 January 2014 11:15 (eleven years ago)

my only big regret in the nominations is that I didn't nominate the Lee Ranaldo album, possibly because someone nominated a track that popped up when I Ctrl+F'd his name to see if the album was nominated. oh well, not like it was gonna place anyway.

some dude, Monday, 6 January 2014 12:48 (eleven years ago)

Poor Lee, just generally

I still haven't heard the record myself, somehow

Beatrix Kiddo (Raymond Cummings), Monday, 6 January 2014 12:50 (eleven years ago)

The Polvo album would make a pretty awesome substitute for Lee Ranaldo if you're looking for that sort of 70's classic rock with a Sonic Youth filter applied, well worth hearing if you haven't heard it yet.

tench and pike, scaup and snipe (NickB), Monday, 6 January 2014 12:59 (eleven years ago)

another possible duplicate?

Rocko - UOENO (Black Hippy Remix)
Rocko ft. Rick Ross & Future - U.O.E.N.O.

i mean...i don't know what the ruling should be on this actually

lex pretend, Monday, 6 January 2014 13:28 (eleven years ago)

Yeah that should be handled cleanly by the system (I assume the first one is a remix of the second one?) but I'll keep an eye on it.

mario kart holy grail (seandalai), Monday, 6 January 2014 13:33 (eleven years ago)

just expressed my franchise

Mordy , Monday, 6 January 2014 13:42 (eleven years ago)

xp yeah it's a remix (in the rap sense) but rocko doesn't remain on it and i think it's credited to kendrick lamar or black hippy rather than rocko?

lex pretend, Monday, 6 January 2014 13:49 (eleven years ago)

That's confusing...what will happen by default is that votes for both will be counted together. If that shouldn't happen then we'll have to change something.

lex pretend, Tuesday, 7 January 2014 13:30 (eleven years ago)

I'm definitely gonna spend some time with the campaign list, already discovering cool stuff there.

MikoMcha, Tuesday, 7 January 2014 13:45 (eleven years ago)

xpost, yeah I did that a bunch of times. Here's to Get Lucky and Reflektor not placing at all.

a beef supreme (dog latin), Tuesday, 7 January 2014 13:57 (eleven years ago)

I was planning on voting at the last minute but then when I was listening to more of the tracks playlist last night, I thought: I already have too many tracks to vote for and what I haven't heard of the album list is made up almost completely of things I either am pretty sure I'm not interested or things I have no clue about (even regarding their genre). I don't feel like doing all that work. So I got voting over with last night. Maybe there will still be pleasant surprises for me to discover when the results come in, but I'm ready for 2014.

_Rudipherous_, Tuesday, 7 January 2014 14:58 (eleven years ago)

I think half the fun is just voting for the ones you know are your faves, have stuck with you or made an impression on you throughout the year etc. Going through all the critics lists and trying to cram for EOY like an exam seems a bit clinical. Just vote for who you like and then use the countdowns to fill in the gaps and see what everyone else was digging I reckon.

Rudipherous, your story about the dance performance reminds me of when I was a kid playing Secret of Monkey Island for hours and hours and then being surprised when words didn't appear above my parents' heads when they spoke.

a beef supreme (dog latin), Tuesday, 7 January 2014 15:38 (eleven years ago)

oh that was a different thread.

a beef supreme (dog latin), Tuesday, 7 January 2014 15:39 (eleven years ago)

whenever i do the whole last-minute listening thing to find new potential songs to vote for, they rarely end up on my ballot anyway b/c they haven't really had much time to actually sink in and become part of my life. like i listened to some of those spotify playlists a bit in december and definitely found some good worthwhile music that i'm glad i heard, but none of it ended up on my ballot when i started whittling it all down. i think maybe 2 years ago was the last time i found something thru that whole process that actually made my ballot.

(secret of monkey island r00lz)

dyl, Tuesday, 7 January 2014 16:53 (eleven years ago)

Hm, those are all good points. I've got my shortlist anyway that I made a couple of weeks back, and in the end will likely just fall back on it. Still enjoying the other thread regardless.

MikoMcha, Tuesday, 7 January 2014 16:55 (eleven years ago)

I added a couple albums at the last minute based on checking out an ILM electronic music playlist for the year, but I generally don't have a very length album list anyway.

_Rudipherous_, Tuesday, 7 January 2014 16:57 (eleven years ago)

Yeah, I'm always more interested in the tracks poll than the album one.

MikoMcha, Tuesday, 7 January 2014 19:21 (eleven years ago)

ciderpress, Tuesday, 7 January 2014 20:20 (eleven years ago)

Funny I've always been more interested in voting for albums. The tracks list generally feels like an aafterthought where I'm voting for my best tracks off the albums I like, a few one hit wonders (tracks I liked off albums I didn't like) and a few dance tracks that didn't appear on albums.

That said in retrospect I get a lot more out of the tracks countdowns because it's where I hear the most new stuff, so it's all good.

The tracks list generally feels like an aafterthought where I'm voting for my best tracks off the albums I like

aagh it's such a bugbear of mine when artists on the album poll also dominate the trax poll with multiple needless fanboy entries. my rule is, no artist should be on both of my ballots.

lex pretend, Wednesday, 8 January 2014 08:11 (eleven years ago)

I don't have any kind of rigid "can't be on both lists" rule, but I vote tracks with a totally different frame of reference than I do albums. Like, where I might throw some points at an album because I take into consideration the artist's entire history and have feelings/respect tied up in him/her/them, for tracks I concentrate my affection on the song and the song only. That's dumb and I can't explain it, but that seems to be how I vote in these things.

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 8 January 2014 08:21 (eleven years ago)

it's experience-as-album versus experience-as-standalone-entity for me (rather than just picking highlights from the former)

lex pretend, Wednesday, 8 January 2014 08:27 (eleven years ago)

yeah i only vote for album tracks if heard them primarily out of the context of the album (i.e. released months before the album was) and they took on a life of their own.

e.g. "adorn" last year

i try to limit the crossover mainly because there's so many artists i want to do well!

Yeah I know, I know, but it's just a different way of thinking and listening to things I guess. I try not to replicate artists on the two ballots if I can help it, but shit I'm also not going to go out of my way if there's a track I love off an album I also really like. Also the tracks poll allows me to vote for e.g. Get Lucky but not RAM.

queen bey backers (Stevie D(eux)), Wednesday, 8 January 2014 13:02 (eleven years ago)

i've historically been very "singles, not album tracks" about tracks polls, especially in stuff like Pazz & Jop, but increasingly in the last couple years of ILX polls i've put favorite album cuts in here and there, which is still kind of geared toward voting for stuff that might actually place since a Beyonce or Paramore deep cut is more likely to be in the top 77 than whatever mainstream country or alt-rock hit i had in that spot on my singles list.

v much looking forward to the rollout - it occurs to me that i have much less idea about what will place highly than in most years. seemed that critical consensus wasn't very ilxish last year (maybe this is wishful thinking though)

lex pretend, Thursday, 9 January 2014 08:08 (eleven years ago)

Yeah, in past years (at least the years that J0rdan, seandalai and myself have conducted the poll), I've always had a reasonable idea of what might be in the top 10 in both categories. For 2013, I'll be just as surprised to find out as everyone else will.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 9 January 2014 08:12 (eleven years ago)

Moka, Thursday, 9 January 2014 08:12 (eleven years ago)

Judging by ILM's opinion through the year I think Haim and Vampire Weekend are sure to walk with the top two places in the albums poll. No idea on the top singles poll though.

Moka, Thursday, 9 January 2014 08:13 (eleven years ago)

Remember when it was 15? If we'd held on to that practice from the musically-run polls, there would've been a violent revolt before now.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 9 January 2014 08:14 (eleven years ago)

why we can't we have the option to give things negative points? Like, everyone can get up to 5 items (weighted or no) that are things they are voting against. It would make it more interesting, and potentially more reflective of ilx collectively.

sarahell, Thursday, 9 January 2014 08:42 (eleven years ago)

Ok I managed to do 25 for each. The albums was easier since I already knew my top 20 beforehand but with the songs I still have no idea. Somehow I feel I ended up voting randomly and I'll regret excluding something in favor of less interesting songs.

I see there's an edit button in there. Can we just edit our ballot whenever we wish to? If so what's the deadline for a final edit?

Moka, Thursday, 9 January 2014 08:45 (eleven years ago)

tench and pike, scaup and snipe (NickB), Thursday, 9 January 2014 09:21 (eleven years ago)

Maybe we could make a top 10 hate poll... so, instead of deducting points from the existing ones everyone gets to pick only one song they hated and we run a mini poll for those.

Moka, Thursday, 9 January 2014 09:21 (eleven years ago)

This could be a year when the list looks--even more than usual?--like a collection of picks representing balkanized sub-communities on the board. I still think it's not hard to guess some of what will appear in the top ten, but I also think I'd rather wait at this point.

This could be a year when the list looks--even more than usual?--like a collection of picks representing balkanized sub-communities on the board.

Is there a consensus metal pick that will definitely make it this year? Do the rolling worlders have a representative? I said earlier that I don't think there's a consensus 'weirdo' pick, and I still think that's true, ill-defined as 'weirdo' may be. So I don't know if the sub-communities will just be rock vs pop or what? Or am I completely out of the loop and new sub-communities have formed?

emil.y, Thursday, 9 January 2014 15:54 (eleven years ago)

I suppose metal pick is Deafheaven, actually? I still haven't heard that.

emil.y, Thursday, 9 January 2014 15:56 (eleven years ago)

An embarrassing doorman and garbage man (dog latin), Thursday, 9 January 2014 15:56 (eleven years ago)

i've felt more distant than ever from the tastes of the sub-communities i frequent and even aside from that haven't noticed an incredible amount of consensus. a lot of the BIG albums this year, across many genres i like, were disappointing, so i think people have been devolving back to personal faves more than ever?

until BEYONCÉ happened, at least <3

lex pretend, Thursday, 9 January 2014 15:57 (eleven years ago)

VENIET IMBER (imago), Thursday, 9 January 2014 16:04 (eleven years ago)

I'm always totally surprised by the Tracks countdown. There'll rarely be anything in those that I know, but I'm not complaining cos I'd prefer to discover new things through polls than retread old ground. Sub-communities does make for a more muted impact when a big album comes out. If there's a big album in dance, metal, hip hop etc all the hype might end up centering around the dedicated board and then non-regulars could miss out. This is a perennial nu-ILM issue though and I really hope that in future there will be more remarkable genre albums with dedicated threads.

One reason I think I miss out on celebrated ILM tracks is cos I can't watch YouTubes at work where I do most of my ILM browsing, so when a thread with a long arcane title appears and I open it and there's a YouTube in the OP, I tend to close it and then I miss out.

I like polished studio HAIM, but have been mostly unimpressed with the live HAIM clips I've heard. I'm not big on rock style vocals in general though, one of the stumbling blocks for me w/r/t rock from 60s classic rock through current indie (not that the vocals are annoying in the same manner across the entire spectrum of rock). Of course, we are talking the album, so we are talking about studio HAIM, so I voted for it. I didn't bother to try to check out the new Beyonce because while I have no doubt she's a good singer, nothing by her has ever really done anything for me. But I probably should have listened to a few tracks from the new one at least.

dropped from 80 - 74 - 51 - 26 this year.

This year it will be well over 30, which is good going imo for a metal poll on a board where most people don't listen to metal and the main poll gets around 140 ballots.

The fact that the metal poll got 80 ballots in a year when the main poll got 121 is way more surprising. Metal didn't do better than usual on the main poll in 2010, so it seems like there was a distinct community of metal ppl. Who were those people? Have they left? I guess I have a theory that non-generalists might not stay around so long on ILM but I don't know if that's true.

how far did you get nick?

mile.y (wins), Thursday, 9 January 2014 20:29 (eleven years ago)

I promoted it a lot more those years but hardly bothered this year as I got fed up with complaints about thread always being top of SNA and ruining peoples experience of ILX or something..
but it shows if I dont promote we dont get votes. Lose/Lose either way innit.

We have got what? 2/3rds of votes since three days ago when I noticed we only had 12 albums ballots and about 5 tracks ballots and there was only a few days left to vote and started to promote it a bit more.
Seandalai I'd love to know where all the votes have gone. J3ff says a lot of ilm metal fans went to twitter and left ilm so maybe he's right? But I'm at a loss to explain it. Metal thread isn't as busy as it used to be and ,deafheaven aside , nothing seems to be crossing over. But that wasn't really a problem as a lot of the lurkers in previous years seemed to be into really obscure or extreme stuff even I hadn't heard them but who knows.

Anyway there's only a minimum of 5 albums needed for a ballot so if anyone likes the minimum of 5 album or indeed 5 tracks they should vote. This year with a lower turnout every ballot could make an impact (esp tracks) so have a look! Every ilxor is welcome, its still an ilx poll remember. It might just surprise people how much they like that has been nominated.

how far did you get nick?

oh man, four days i've been at it so far while i've been working and i'm still less than half the way in. it's been kind of a grind tbh and not really a good way of listening to unfamiliar music - it's exhausting to a point where it just exacerbates genre prejudices and more challenging or abrasive stuff just isn't getting a fair crack at all (ima go back for that later). having said that, trying to guess which ilxor nommed particular tracks has been mildly diverting, and, cos i've not really been paying much attention to things outside of my usual orbit, there's still been a whole bunch of new-to-me stuff that i've enjoyed to a greater or lesser extent eg:

Vanessa Paradis - Love Song
DJ Koze ft. Matthew Drear - My Plans
Kidnap Kid - Thin Lines
Magic System - Mamadou
DJ Q - Heaven
MIA - Come Walk With Me
Angel Haze - Echelon (It's My Way)
Toyboy & Robin - Jaded
Young Galaxy - Pretty Boy (Peaking Lights remix)
Drums of Death - True
Creep ft. Dark Sister - Jessica King
Miley Cyrus - FU
Shanell - Catch Me At The Light
Snuff Crew ft. Tyree Cooper - Work It Out

tench and pike, scaup and snipe (NickB), Thursday, 9 January 2014 23:22 (eleven years ago)

Oh, special mention to Peter Gordon & Factory Floor - Beachingcombing cos that was 15 minutes of unexpected spaced-out bliss

I see there's an edit button in there. Can we just edit our ballot whenever we wish to? If so what's the deadline for a final edit?

― Moka, Thursday, January 9, 2014 8:45 AM (14 hours ago) Bookmark Flag Post Permalink

I was hoping the Google-provided edit option would work but I think you can only use it immediately after you've voted. If you come back later it won't give you that option - or at least that's what happened when I tested it.

If people want to revise their ballot they can ILXmail me their changes or just submit a new ballot and post here so I know to delete the old one. You can do this any time up until the polls close.

I like all of those but I've decided Trumpet & Badman's (also DJ Q involved) "Love Keeps Changing" is better than "Heaven."

Haim suck and no way Beyonce isnt going to win in a landslide.
If I have to I'll vote Beyonce at #1 just to stop Haim :)

― pfunkboy (Algerian Goalkeeper)

See I'm happy as I love both these albums and will be fine if they do make up the top two. I'm with you though, Beyonce is going to take this in a bigger landslide than Miguel did last year.

Been going through the Spotify playlist for the last week just skipping the songs I already know. Found some real gems on there that I would have never known about otherwise. This is why I love this place.

I'm going to through some of the albums that are are lower down on my albums that I've probably only played once to see if they deserve a bump. I started doing this already and was pleased to find the Charli XCX album isn't just a 7/10 might be in my top 50 albums kind of an album and should actually be in my top 10. I just heard Superlove for the first time too, just wow!

Kitchen Person, Friday, 10 January 2014 02:47 (eleven years ago)

I hope mia and the knife win the albums poll. if Beyonce wins I will be truly sad. good songs there but it is not a great album.

marc iv, Friday, 10 January 2014 03:51 (eleven years ago)

i don't really care much what wins, but lord it'd be nice if it's not a 'ghost of ilx polls past' artist like mia or the knife

some dude, Friday, 10 January 2014 03:53 (eleven years ago)

well in fairness both MIA and The Knife released great albums last year, it's not like it would be a TRAVESTY if either won

OTOH if Vampire Weekend wins...

SHAUN (DJP), Friday, 10 January 2014 04:26 (eleven years ago)

but it's going to be Beyonce, isn't it?

Dan S, Friday, 10 January 2014 06:53 (eleven years ago)

haim and yeezus were my top two iirc and either could take it, imo. yeezus did very well everywhere else but we may be inoculated to kanye hype

flopson, Friday, 10 January 2014 06:58 (eleven years ago)

re: beyoncé, i half-worry that the nature of its release means it won't pick up casual votes like a lot of other big-name releases will. not streamed anywhere, all but two of the songs being kept off youtube and spotify etc.

i liked both m.i.a. and knife albums and they'll surely place but the latter was divisive and it felt like not as many people were as interested in the former as in previous years. yeezus will probably be top 10 but ilx is pretty kanye-sceptical yeah. (or rather: i think what often makes ilx differ from ~critical consensus is that ilx is much less forgiving of missteps or moments of awfulness whereas lots of critics will be all like "ooh that's what makes it special")

haim winning would be o_0 to me but i don't mind them, it's vampire fucking weekend i fear.

I'd be delighted if the Knife won, but it's a real Marmite album so it probably won't.

Vampire Weekend convinced me this year, for the first time, that they're actually worthy of my attention. The high points on that album are VERY high, but they're yet to make a perfect album I think - next one maybe?

An embarrassing doorman and garbage man (dog latin), Friday, 10 January 2014 11:17 (eleven years ago)

MikoMcha, Friday, 10 January 2014 11:23 (eleven years ago)

it may be a great album but I didn't vote for Beyoncé because I've only been able to hear a couple tracks so far. It's possible that there are other folks on here who have had a similar experience. Still wouldn't surprise me if it won overall.

I think The Knife or Kanye could easily take it too. I'd be bummed if Vampire Weekend was our top choice. The new album is fine just like all their albums are fine, but none of them are great, outstanding, or exciting to me, just good.

I also think Daft Punk could be a dark horse contender here.

SHAUN (DJP), Friday, 10 January 2014 15:30 (eleven years ago)

I'd be disappointed if Kanye made number one, partly because he also represents done-to-death ILM royalty as much as DP, VW, Knife, MIA etc and also because, even though the rest of the album is cool in a deliberately ugly kind of way, Blood On The Leaves is quite possibly one of the worst songs I've heard in the last 5 years.

An embarrassing doorman and garbage man (dog latin), Friday, 10 January 2014 15:35 (eleven years ago)

I haven't been able to discern why Vampire Weekend is loved so much more here than the vast majority of indie rock bands. A one sentence explanation would be helpful (that's the extent of my interest).

_Rudipherous_, Friday, 10 January 2014 15:47 (eleven years ago)

Potential one sentence explanation: people are stupid?

emil.y, Friday, 10 January 2014 15:49 (eleven years ago)

I asked the same question on their thread a few months ago, and I was especially interested in why so many people who'd otherwise reject such bands love VW. I know Matt DC, Rev and Tim F are all fans, for example. I'll try and find the bit. I think the answer boils down very simply to songcraft - particularly melody and lyric-writing.

Thanks for singling out that part of the the VW thread, dog latin. I can't really even get past the sound of the vocals, so I am probably just being a simplistic hater. Lyrics are almost never enough to make me like a song, though I did appreciate the horchata/bachata rhyme.

Rudipherous, I guess tolerance for this kind of singing is definitely going to affect you. If you don't like Ezra's vox it's gonna be a barrier, but I think this was the song which (after asking my question over on the other thread) eventually cemented VW as a very good, rather than just okay, band :

I feel like Vampire Weekend internalized every unfair criticism and generalization made about them and their music and turned into self-fulfilling prophecy on the last album, or at least on the first half of the last album, which I found so anonymous and boring that it overwhelmed my memory of the second half (assuming I ever actually got around to playing it). I did recently hear a snippet of a song from it that sounded good/interesting but now I can't remember which song it was.

probably gonna retract what i said about voting for the paramore album cos if any record really falls off in the second half it's that one. first seven tracks or so are all smashers though, maybe i'll just vote for a bunch of their tracks

but after the first 7 songs there's last hope and still into you and anklebiters and crazy girls and above all PROOF! which needs to be a single so it can go #1 everywhere, bring about world peace and then top next year's poll.

prolego, Friday, 10 January 2014 23:53 (eleven years ago)

fyi I made it about halfway through "Hannah Hunt" before giving up

― SHAUN (DJP)

You probably turned it off just before the best bit then. No way that the album is close to album of the year but that song is really beautiful.

Kitchen Person, Saturday, 11 January 2014 01:21 (eleven years ago)

In the end, I'd be more happy w/ Paramore than VW for the album, if only for the sake of reinvention.

MikoMcha, Saturday, 11 January 2014 01:41 (eleven years ago)

the back half of the Paramore album is less exciting than the first for sure but it's full of great songs and interesting moves they wouldn't have been able to get away with on a shorter album so there's not really anything i'd gladly take off of it

some dude, Saturday, 11 January 2014 01:52 (eleven years ago)

Yeah, first time I heard it, really wasn't expecting a post-rock finale.

This is some bullshit, the only really weak track on the album is no. 2! And even leaving aside the songs prolego mentioned there is the majesty of "Be Alone".

Tim F, Saturday, 11 January 2014 10:04 (eleven years ago)

surprisingly not hating Paramore. in fact, could this be...enjoyment?

Flame Out at Jagbans (imago), Saturday, 11 January 2014 10:20 (eleven years ago)

Flame Out at Jagbans (imago), Saturday, 11 January 2014 11:24 (eleven years ago)

For what it's worth, it wasn't terrible by my chartpop-suspicious standards, and the song Part II may even have been rousing

Flame Out at Jagbans (imago), Saturday, 11 January 2014 11:25 (eleven years ago)

chartpop? it's a great rock album.

some dude, Saturday, 11 January 2014 11:55 (eleven years ago)

haha chartrock then, it definitely has a strongly commercial remit, but does quite a lot with it & keeps it varied. as I say, I wasn't once compelled to turn it off

Listen to the first six songs on the Haim album at least. If you don't get much out of them, the rest are unlikely to sway you.

Ramnaresh Samhain (ShariVari), Saturday, 11 January 2014 13:11 (eleven years ago)

haim was nice btw, I wish I felt the love/hate as strongly as ilx/imago but I will say that the duke dumont rmx of that one song is this year's the lindstrøm mix of that one song

mile.y (wins), Saturday, 11 January 2014 21:22 (eleven years ago)

I've found some big album discoveries from going through the nominations over the last week.

As previously mentioned listening to the Charli XCX album again was big revelation. After ignoring it for most of the year I'm now going to have to find room in my top five for it.

The Frankie Rose album is fantastic. I heard Interstellar last year but it didn't register with me at all. Fell in love with Sorrow when going through the Spotify playlist and it turns out the whole album is just as good. The second half in particular is really strong.

The other big one has been the Dom Kennedy album Get Home Safely. Brilliant production and really consistent. It might rival Prodigy & Alchemist for my favourite rap album of the year.

Kitchen Person, Saturday, 11 January 2014 23:54 (eleven years ago)

I love the Melt Banana album, it's at least top 15 for me

I love this so much. Looking through all the noms sent me down a YouTube rabbit hole and turned me on to tons of great stuff I missed or slept on last year. There's a respectable degree of diversity represented in the nom lists.

davey, Sunday, 12 January 2014 07:49 (eleven years ago)

Respectable? I meant to say it's a fucking awesome degree of diversity! It's seems really pretyy comprehensive of the music world imo

davey, Sunday, 12 January 2014 07:50 (eleven years ago)

but will the results be as diverse?

pfunkboy (Algerian Goalkeeper), Sunday, 12 January 2014 07:55 (eleven years ago)

Right now, the top ten tracks are all by or feature a guest vocal from Pharrell. Even that one by Merzbow.

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 12 January 2014 08:01 (eleven years ago)

Yeah, like 90% of the Spotify list is ace. Thought it would be a bit of a trial to list to, but totally enjoying it.

Goddam it. New Ricardo Gallo (jazz pianist from Colombia, sometimes kind of out) album on Spotify, and I think it has been there all along, so I could have nominated it had I heard it, which I'm only doing now. . . I mean, maybe I won't regret that once I hear the whole thing, but there's definitely a chance.

Think I saw that when it got linked to by someone else on the rolling eoy thread.
I thought it was quite cool a metal band achieving that. Do wish the indie critics would cover other metal though (amongst other genres of course).
It seemed as though Pitchfork gave it a good review so other critics had to join in(not spin, as i know whiney is not only a deafheaven fan but a metal fan too) but ignore everything else buy y'know its a start.

I wonder how it will do in this poll. And of course do follow metal poll to see if it places high!

and on that note I better go start todays countdown.

I think we will be finishing thursday btw as that's what was voted for on thread.

pfunkboy (Algerian Goalkeeper), Tuesday, 14 January 2014 15:06 (eleven years ago)

Do you also wish metal critics would cover indie? No, I thought not.

emil.y, Tuesday, 14 January 2014 15:08 (eleven years ago)

I do actually. Nothing beats getting out of yer comfort zone. and in recent years I think plenty of metal bands/fans/critics have been checking out indie rock!

pfunkboy (Algerian Goalkeeper), Tuesday, 14 January 2014 15:57 (eleven years ago)

dunno why you assumed I would say "no"

pfunkboy (Algerian Goalkeeper), Tuesday, 14 January 2014 15:58 (eleven years ago)

There is a large school of thought which chastises the indie press for a perceived lack of inclusiveness while simultaneously excusing gaps in knowledge by other people as a matter-of-fact byproduct of specialisation. While I realise it is at least partly the fault of the indie presses of yore for presenting themselves as generalist when they are not, the hypocrisy of this attitude is still something of a bugbear of mine.

emil.y, Tuesday, 14 January 2014 16:11 (eleven years ago)

That is why I thought you would say no.

emil.y, Tuesday, 14 January 2014 16:12 (eleven years ago)

emil.y OTM. The indie press gets loads of flack when it covers other genres while simultaneously copping shit for not doing it exactly as genre gatekeepers might like, and I've never really understood it either.

Voted. The albums list was easy for me, but tracks a lot harder...so many to choose from, and such a huge list, of which I've only heard a fraction. My vote feels like it could be missing my favorite tracks, if only I knew (or remembered) they existed! But I guess that is what the rollout is for, to see the huge variety of stuff that gets consensus

We have 82 album ballots and 74 track ballots. Still a fair number of regulars that haven't voted yet. It's still hard to say what the final results are going to look like - there is one point between the current #1 and #2 albums.

i mean i guess it's in there w/ ram and mbv where it not placing at all or placing outside the top twenty would register as a surprise but it hasn't been a factor like vampire weekend or yeezus. haim = 2013 chiefs essentially. vampire weekend and yeezus are weird consensus picks also - alot of ppl think that vw is their best yet but a considerable number also think they've lost the plot and i would guess a significant number of yeezus voters would agree it would work alot better as an ep.

Not sure what this means: what does it mean for indie when a girl band gets hype? Like, I'm actually not sure what balls is referencing, or implying, or what?

emil.y, Wednesday, 15 January 2014 15:18 (eleven years ago)

i had no idea they were being promoted as 'indie' until the clutched pearl pieces came out (pfork hype doesn't necessarily signify that in 2013). vampire weekend production lends it some credibility but i think it's more just 'indie' is how that kind of pop sheen alt is 'indie' now (or 'indie' has become that pop sheen alt perhaps). i can't register them as indie at all though, i mean that one girl can actually sing.

balls, Wednesday, 15 January 2014 15:22 (eleven years ago)

OHHHHH this probably explains why i never got into haim then! that fussiness in the production, yup

i never saw any really dumb pro-haim writing, that's what usually sets the rage triggers off for me (vampire weekend!). the weird thing is i have no conception of what their real life fanbase is, i don't know anyone who's into them (apart from critics) and they're really easy to ignore for a band with such success

also i realised recently that i don't care about haim b/c i really never grew up listening to the stuff they draw on, and have never heard that much of it - so while i've been a sucker for last year's uk house revival b/c it sounds so much like the '90s commercial dance i did grow up loving (w/o being just a throwback) i don't get that flash of recognition with haim

o. nate, Wednesday, 15 January 2014 15:49 (eleven years ago)

their success seems so hypothetical to me still. i've seen them pop up on tv several times now and each time i'm surprised. the other day there was high school girl at the park listening to them on blast at the dog park and it befuddled me nearly as much as the realization that wearing big ass headphones in public or two strapping it are totally normal things now as well. i can totally get the 'dull' charge, during last year's poll i was consistently not getting the love over the singles, but i was pleasantly surprised at how thoroughly solid the album is, more and more so as i played it ie i liked it more the third time thru than the first time. not exceptional and god knows nothing new but it hits its mark repeatedly. cf tony gwynn, christine mcvie, the strokes, ncis. i'm a sucker for that fussy production though.

Oh, eurgh. I get annoyed by misclassification because I have that sort of (irritating) brain, but the accusation of 'co-opting' here is stupid, and yes, quite probably spurred by 'ew girls' wankery (I only have past history of rockcrit to go on for that assumption, but it's a pretty long history of that sort of shit). Reminds me of stumbling onto Amanda Palmer online hatefests, where the criticism is *very clearly* run by misogyny, almost enough to make me want to defend her.

emil.y, Wednesday, 15 January 2014 15:54 (eleven years ago)

See, I can't even remember any of their tunes. I don't think they are very catchy. Not as catchy as that Trollz song, which I would almost like as bubblegum pop if it wasn't so horribly misogynist in itself. Woo hair and shopping yay!

i think i like Haim and the VW albums for quite similar reasons really. I find both albums have a good 5-6 songs that are very catchy and enjoyable but not in an intolerable way. That's first and foremost why I like them. Not sure I understand what is meant by 'fussy' production but each to their own.
Haim do admittedly remind me of a lot of music I heard round the house when I was growing up and then maybe completely forgot about once I hit puberty, but I also don't think they're a total rip-off or tribute, it's just elements of things like 'Bad', 'Get Close', 'Tango In The Night' and all sorts of things off this one circa-86 pop compilation of my parents I used to play before I had the wherewithal to purchase my own music.
VW always ran hot and cold with me until now so I understand why people wouldn't like them. I think this is the first time I got attuned to how good they are at writing deceptively simple songs, so I think this is the first album where I even considered giving it a second listen. They've done a clever thing (IMO) of disregarding the critics who write them off as poshboy preps by turning the other cheek and sort of making it their whole schtick. Again that's going to rub a few backs up the wrong way but I think it's admirable that they aren't acting under the pretenses a lot of indie rock bands work under. As for lyrics, yeah they're fairly clever but I'm not a big lyric sheet reader.

An embarrassing doorman and garbage man (dog latin), Wednesday, 15 January 2014 16:28 (eleven years ago)

that said i don't think there's anything wrong with people enjoying a band if they think the lyrics are smart. what is the issue with that?

But that's exactly why I like Vampire Weekend. They just have catchy tunes. I'm not into them for their lyrics and I have no idea how smart they're supposed to be. I'm sure I'm not the only one who feels this way too. What's the point dismissing all their fans and making up reasons for people liking them. the new vw album has great lyrics. that was a large part of what made me come around to them this year; previously i was seriously put off by the preppy/clever schtick and would never have been able to love them on the strength of catchy tunes alone. i haven't spent a lot of time with the haim record but they seem way more retro and pop than vw (all of which is fine of course) and i don't really get the comparison.

seandalai, Michael Hurley's Land Of Lofi album is listed twice, under "Michael Hurley" and 'Hurley Michael". thanks for all your work.

I think I can send my ballot tonight, wanna troll through the tracks list at random once more in case I discover something as fun as that Droop-E song.

Two days left to vote in the ILM EOY Poll! (seandalai), Thursday, 16 January 2014 15:54 (eleven years ago)

This is maybe another weird DJPism but I feel like it's cheating to look through the nomination list for stuff new to you; part of it is the feeling that there's inflated enthusiasm for new stuff that wouldn't necessarily have sustained and part of it is feeling that the poll should as accurately as possible reflect the stuff each individual voter listened to over the year rather than the stuff everyone rallies around once it's all put together in a big pile (that's what the poll rollout is for).

OTOH I wonder how many people would vote for, say, the Wax Idols album or Frankie Rose if they had been heard in a timely manner

SHAUN (DJP), Thursday, 16 January 2014 16:24 (eleven years ago)

I think I enjoyed the Wax Idols song on the playlist! but now you've said that...

haha pwned

SHAUN (DJP), Thursday, 16 January 2014 16:26 (eleven years ago)

People can vote how they want imo. Everyone has different ideas about what ballots should be, like some people think you shouldn't vote for three tracks off an album and also for the album itself and some other people will say "those were my three favourite songs this year, it wouldn't be honest to leave them off".

Two days left to vote in the ILM EOY Poll! (seandalai), Thursday, 16 January 2014 16:29 (eleven years ago)

Yeah my ballot won't have anything I didn't hear in 2013, although it may contain things I heard very late in 2013 so it's maybe an arbitrary distinction

beef in the new era (wins), Thursday, 16 January 2014 16:30 (eleven years ago)

IMO some other people OTM

but obv everyone can vote how they want; I also recognize that my kneejerk dislike of "strategic voting" is hypocritical

this is an interesting & valid way to approach it imo, but not really applicable when (like me) your album shortlist was 52 and your tracks short list was... 20 at best. I'm not gonna pad out the bottom with five more Kurt Vile songs, even though I listened to that record a lot in 2013. I'd rather throw votes to cool tracks I discovered from the noms playlist, even if it's late in the game and doesn't represent my regular listening habits.

sleeve, Thursday, 16 January 2014 16:37 (eleven years ago)

Same as wins here - no albums heard January this year will make it, some albums only heard for the first time in December will. Songs I treat a bit differently, there are a few I only heard at the turn of the year that I feel like I can make a reasonable judgement about, but it's still pretty rare for me to include anything new at this late stage. I guess it's the difference between "my favourites of 2013" and "best thing released in 2013", but I think there's room for a bit of slippage.

emil.y, Thursday, 16 January 2014 16:40 (eleven years ago)

yeah that makes sense; I had to trim my album list down from 50 and my track list down from over 100 (much like every year) so the notion of having open spots is foreign to me

(also I'd be tempted to leave those spots blank if I really couldn't think of anything else to vote for, but again that's me)

OTOH I did stick 3 tracks by one artist on my tracks ballot so I guess the real takeaway is "lol DJP"

i used to be quite against voting for multiple tracks from an album + the album itself but actually found myself doing that for two different albums this time around. those particular tracks i played the hell out of and was wowed by *as* single tracks and i do feel it would be dishonest to leave them off.

however i do still frown on ppl simply including a track that they didn't really love that much from an album that they DID love just because it's the album's putative 'single'

Well, I just like to have a reasonably accurate record of what I liked in a year, but I'm fine with subbing in a song I like almost as much (which is, very very much indeed) by the same band if it's a hassle. And I may have assumed wrongly. And also I nominate barely anything for tracks so that ballot is always a little more haphazard anyway.

yeah same. maybe there might only be 5-6 records i'm blown away by but there are always a ton of albums, maybe 20-30, that i know are flawed for whatever reason, or of limited general interest, or interesting but not outstanding, but that i think are still worthy of being repped for and heard.

Guys, SAVE YOUR BALLOTS SOMEWHERE. (Obv not so easy if you're swapping computers, but then there's always The Cloud.)

emil.y, Friday, 17 January 2014 18:07 (eleven years ago)

1) copy the ballot into a file before submitting it
2) save file

SHAUN (DJP), Friday, 17 January 2014 18:07 (eleven years ago)

seandalai, I emailed you my correction

crüt, Friday, 17 January 2014 18:08 (eleven years ago)

i've got my ballot saved at home. I just demand access to all information at all places at all times because I'm spoiled.

crüt, Friday, 17 January 2014 18:09 (eleven years ago)

1. put saved file in Dropbox or Google Drive
2. access it from anywhere

SHAUN (DJP), Friday, 17 January 2014 18:10 (eleven years ago)

just submitted my rather half-arsed ballot

Pre-Madonna (Nasty, Brutish & Short), Friday, 17 January 2014 18:18 (eleven years ago)

the legend of rapper chance (Drugs A. Money), Friday, 17 January 2014 18:44 (eleven years ago)

There's a page after you submit that says "thanks" or something, but other than that there's no confirmation. If you see that page, we got it.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 17 January 2014 18:52 (eleven years ago)

hmm can't remember if I saw that, did y'all receive mine?

seandalai is the only one with access to all the individual ballot data, so I'll leave him to answer that.

seandalai - dunno if it'll cause problems and maybe you know this already, but i did notice that the title the last album on my ballot was so long that it ran on to the next line. cos it's a full ballot you'll obviously just ignore the last line anyway, but if anyone else has voted for that mid-ballot and it gets split into two lines, maybe it might push something else off the bottom of their ballot?
