R&B 2014

considering the 2013 only got one Brainwasher post the whole year, i'll just go ahead and start this off with a list of artists maybe probably dropping albums this year, feel free to add to it:

Miguel, Frank Ocean, Mariah Carey, D'Angelo (????), Maxwell (?????), Jeremih, Chris Brown, Omarion, Elle Varner, Jennifer Hudson, Trey Songz, Melanie Fiona, Jazmine Sullivan

also presumably Sevyn Street, August Alsina, Bridget Kelly and Jhene Aiko will follow-up their 2013 EPs with albums, and all other new artists will be stuck in EP land

the Toni Braxton/Babyface album is out in Feb, shaping up to be pretty promising:

Also I guess this year we'll get lots of Tide Dolla $ign and other Mustard&B hits

some dude, Tuesday, 7 January 2014 15:57 (eleven years ago)

what is going on with KING, did anything come out after 'in the meantime'?

i'm really into this song. bieber sounds mostly whatever but future's vocals esp those super-high backing vocals in the chorus are amazing

shit, i was wondering what happened to jade alston last year after dropping her mixtape in jan - seems she spent a lot of it in hospital having been diagnosed with a "potentially fatal heart condition"

the good news is that she seems to be managing it and (while we weren't looking) set up a kickstarter to fund her proper album and smashed the target: http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1412324390/jade-alstons-first-album-we-will-live

yeah, that was her initial 'follow-up to "Bad"' a while back, never took off. i still have hopes for her but i dunno if her being signed to Rico Love's label while his solo record is taking off is a good or bad thing for her momentum.

feeling this singer i stumbled on, satin beretta: https://soundcloud.com/mhpr/got-me-satin-beretta

lex pretend, Thursday, 9 January 2014 20:42 (eleven years ago)

i was wondering what he had been up to. it seemed like he lost some momentum after "'til the end of time" and the other one that i don't really remember but glad to see he's putting a record out

dyl, Thursday, 9 January 2014 20:47 (eleven years ago)

Yeah, "End of Time" was a tough one to follow. He continued releasing really fantastic tracks with kind of a Raphael Saadiq, Stone Rollin' sort of feel, but they weren't enough to keep him on his label. The LP is great, though. Plays like a more concise, rocking Channel Orange at times. Hope it finds him an audience so he keeps recording on his own; he's too gifted to just keep writing songs for other people.

Evan R, Thursday, 9 January 2014 20:54 (eleven years ago)

That Satin track is nice. Good reminder that vibey music can still bump.

Evan R, Thursday, 9 January 2014 20:58 (eleven years ago)

Missed K. Michelle's headling W. DC area club gig the night before Thanksgiving, but not sure I want to see her open for Robin Thicke at the Patriot Center basketball arena in February though. She's doing a number of gigs opening for him that month.

Irv Gotti put his fist through a wall when he realized he hadn't already turned it into an R&B song himself

some dude, Tuesday, 14 January 2014 20:33 (eleven years ago)

lol. Yeah that track is all time. Too many R&B singers are beat-jacking '90s hip-hop, which annoys me on paper, but the results are usually pretty effective, so I understand why they do it even if it's lazy.

Evan R, Tuesday, 14 January 2014 20:35 (eleven years ago)

I won't embed it here, but there's a new-ish Eric Bellinger/Problem track that's just Kris Kross's "Jump." And I hate it, but I also kind of don't hate it.

Evan R, Tuesday, 14 January 2014 20:36 (eleven years ago)

it can be done well and it can be done poorly, i try to be case-by-case with it. love the Ariana Grande album, hated Tamar's "Juicy" jack.

some dude, Tuesday, 14 January 2014 20:39 (eleven years ago)

ariana grande album has all those trap snares tho, kinda takes it out of the 90s sound

Spottie, Tuesday, 14 January 2014 20:45 (eleven years ago)

well tinashe doesn't rap

le goon (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 15 January 2014 19:56 (eleven years ago)

The Mack Wilds album is pretty OK. It commits to the downtempo '90s hip-hop vibe admirably (its only features are Method Man and Raekwon) and Wilds is an agreeable enough presence, even if the songs aren't all that memorable or ambitious. I'm a sucker for this stuff, though.

Evan R, Wednesday, 15 January 2014 20:44 (eleven years ago)

heard a really good algebra blessett song called 'danger zone' on the radio - throwback vibe but with that ever-elusive unbeholden, self-possessed jazmine sullivan swag. preview clips of the lp (on bbe) sound v strong

r|t|c, Thursday, 16 January 2014 10:53 (eleven years ago)

first listen to the algebra album (on worst promo stream in the world) is very pleasing indeed

this tink mixtape on the other hand is tedious in the extreme, she's like a parody of thin-voiced cassie fan club fetishists. occasionally decent when she raps though

lex pretend, Thursday, 16 January 2014 20:58 (eleven years ago)

that mixtape sounds barely anything like cassie

lex pretend, Thursday, 16 January 2014 21:01 (eleven years ago)

lex pretend, Thursday, 16 January 2014 21:02 (eleven years ago)

oh as i type a beat that catches my ear hoves into view! it's the sub-2min outro

lex pretend, Thursday, 16 January 2014 21:03 (eleven years ago)

the sean paul interpolation in that tinashe song is so great

she's so right for dj mustard beats

lex pretend, Thursday, 16 January 2014 21:13 (eleven years ago)

shes a p great rapper tho, imho

rap steve gadd (D-40), Thursday, 16 January 2014 23:21 (eleven years ago)

what do we think of TAMAR Braxton's "All the Way Home"?

Bryan Fairy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 5 February 2014 14:59 (eleven years ago)

i'm a big fan, definitely one of the best tracks on a hit-and-miss album

scott c-word (some dude), Wednesday, 5 February 2014 15:00 (eleven years ago)

babyface/braxton just SOUNDS so good - just really natural and unforced and obv their voices are a perfect match. it sounds more like the 90s than any 90s throwback but not b/c they're making a point about the 90s but b/c they're old and those are clothes that suit them best. this carries even the 1-2 weaker songs but the other fantastic thing is how indelible some of the hooks are, like "roller coaster", that chorus, just wow. and then lyrically you get something like "i wish"!!!!!

lex pretend, Wednesday, 5 February 2014 16:25 (eleven years ago)

also that new ciara/future duet is just incredible, they sound even more besotted with each other

lex pretend, Wednesday, 5 February 2014 16:28 (eleven years ago)

predictably I'm loving this Braxton-Babyface record. "I Wish" has the most devastating lyric I've heard in months: "Please don't have a girl/
Cause you'll give that woman the world"!!!!! Talk about otm.

Bryan Fairy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 5 February 2014 23:28 (eleven years ago)

Not sure I love it yet--there sure is a lot more & Divorce than Love, Marriage--but the highs are pretty high: "I Wish," for sure, and "Where Did We Go Wrong" are both shattering.

Inside Lewellyn Sinclair (cryptosicko), Wednesday, 5 February 2014 23:54 (eleven years ago)

i don't necessarily think the album is gonna be a masterpiece but i don't think it's gonna all sound like that song -- he JUST did that Despicable Me soundtrack and had been working on this album for a while before "Happy" took off. i'm guessing it'll be a mix of styles as much as In My Mind or any of the NERD albums.

"As of right this second my main focus is my new album," he tells Billboard's The Juice of his upcoming full-length, due this summer. "It'll be out probably towards the summertime, predominately R&B this time. I had a little stint with the dance music and all of that, which I had a good time with-- and I love the audience, I love them for accepting me doing it --but I had to go home on this one. Had to take it back to my roots, and not to say that there won't be one, maybe two songs on there that the dance crowd can get into, but the majority, the girth of the album, will be R&B."

4. Gush
By now, the room is struck by how powerfully each song so far has crashed in on its vigorous and insatiable beats, demanding attention and fanning the flames of our un-self conscious sedentary dancing. We’re treated to a little throwback line with the song’s hook of “Light that ass on fire,” but the solitary and sombre strings that rise trembling through the song are a far cry from Busta Rhymes’ metallic bounce. The song falls back into its disco beat to fade out over a buoyant guitar solo.

Relieved this isn't the sex jam I assumed it would be from the title, but this almost sounds equally gross to me.

uhh…does jason derulo's "talk dirty" count as R&B? I know that I heard a tune by him a few years ago, but since before this song I couldn't distinguish him and Taio Cruz, that I heard it on the radio five times while driving around Hawaii last week is significant. the sax part that starts out sounding atonal but ends up with a middle eastern tonality does the trick. My wife dislikes current pop music, but she likes this tune.
'
and Danity Kane "bye bye baby"? do not remember their previous tunes, but methinks this one represents mainstream pop evoking Random Access Memories.

veronica moser, Friday, 21 February 2014 22:34 (eleven years ago)

Derulo has never gotten a drop of urban radio play in America, always been a pop radio darling even though the current hit has 2 Chainz on it and obviously SOME of his songs are pretty much R&B.

they've released about 3 pretty decent singles in the past year or two, iirc the last one gave me mis-teeq vibes? as with so many r&b/pop girl groups they deserve to be a lot more successful than they are (which is, not at all) but at the same time i can't really argue exactly what would make them stand out

it is called "All of Me." It sucks and it indeed has put him back to square one as a dude that does everything "correctly," like a male Alicia Keys: I remember reading Q/Mojo writers falling over themselves re: Legend, cuz he harkens back to Marvin Gaye and dudes they get, as opposed to, oh I don't know, T-Pain. Perhaps Monsieur Pretend knows of what/whom I speak here.

This after he did "ready to go right now" with Andre 3000, an effortless tune that did not seem laboriously respectful of tradition. and I'll say this: 2 years ago I moved away from the East Village. several times in the immediate months prior, I saw him, as he lived around there, and women who clearly knew who he was but also women I'm confident had no idea whatsoever who he was, without fail would check him out as he walked down the street, like I would if I saw a Lea Michelle-looking/PAWG chick.

even still (and contrary to the cb one obv) that song somehow finds a resolution as dazed duet that it didnt have as soliloquy. very nice indeed

Lots of up and comers dropping great stuff lately.

Mila J is Jhené Aiko's older sister, but you'd never guess it, since she sounds like an actual corporeal presence. I think I'm gonna hear this all over this summer:

The production on this RaVaughn single has a nice, Los-y bounce:

And I'm not usually into singer-afterthought-rapper combos, but Freddy Hefner is genuinely witty and her latest mixtape is a hoot:

Evan R, Friday, 16 May 2014 16:49 (eleven years ago)

the original song is perfect as is, don't really think it needs a guest rap, but if it's gonna have one i'd much rather YG than the awful Kid Ink video version

some dude, Friday, 16 May 2014 16:50 (eleven years ago)

The rap (the YG one, not the Kid Ink one obv) really works for me because the contrast highlights how unusually soft Sevyn's delivery is. Her verses are like one long sigh.

Evan R, Friday, 16 May 2014 16:55 (eleven years ago)

the great thing about Sevyn's delivery though is it's so dreamy but she's basically doing a Meek Mill flow

some dude, Friday, 16 May 2014 19:35 (eleven years ago)

Ha, I don't hear that at all, but it's awesome to think about.

Man, J0rd's post has me going back and rereading this thread and it's crazy how much great stuff has been posted. Dearth of big albums aside, this is shaping up to be a really memorable year for R&B

Evan R, Friday, 16 May 2014 19:46 (eleven years ago)

yeah I heard them do this for Aloe Blacc and was like WTF?!

The Reverend, Friday, 16 May 2014 23:52 (eleven years ago)

that label-sponsored iheartradio on the verge artist promo has been pretty funny in the way it has successfully gotten, in addition to its share of artists who truly seemed "on the verge" (like aloe blacc, jhene aiko, sam smith, and sadly iggy azalea), some random no-names like katy tiz onto radio playlists

dyl, Saturday, 17 May 2014 00:03 (eleven years ago)

huh...

Under U.S. law, 47 U.S.C. § 317, a radio station can play a specific song in exchange for money, but this must be disclosed on the air as being sponsored airtime, and that play of the song should not be counted as a "regular airplay".

The Reverend, Saturday, 17 May 2014 00:26 (eleven years ago)

one of my local stations played the 50 Cent/Trey Songz single for a couple weeks with a drop of 50 introducing it, he didn't say anything about sponsoring or w/e but i assumed it was somehow paid for.

the Katy Tiz ordeal was really weird because it was a song that had already gotten a major label push 3-4 years ago by the act that wrote it, Rock Mafia (who got Miley to star in the video and VH1 played it to death for a minute), but i guess it failed badly enough that someone decided they could use it again with somebody else.

some dude, Saturday, 17 May 2014 00:58 (eleven years ago)

that 50 cent/trey songz track is kinda trash

Don't like mila j's fake timbo track (jhene's "the worst" is a jam though)

Not feeling the rhythm of a dancer lift ... P blatant attempt to recreate "show me" and between that and the new mase single I think we're finally reaching mustard saturation point critical

the mila j is derivative but just about has enough ragged vim to please. helps when the guitar licks get sloppier and it pushes the song away from tim and closer to organized noize

2. Adrian Marcel – “2 a.m.”
3. Timothy Bloom – “Stand in the Way (of My Love)”
4. Mila J – “Smoke, Drink, Break Up (Remix)”
5. Tink ft. Jeremih – “Don’t Tell Nobody”
6. Sevyn Streeter ft. YG “Next (Remix)”
7. Tinashe – “2 On”
8. Satin Beretta – “Got Me”
9. Trey Songz ft. Young Jeezy – “Ordinary”

since when has mustard actually having produced a mustard track actually mattered

rap steve gadd (D-40), Tuesday, 20 May 2014 21:36 (eleven years ago)

with the Mase record I mean: if it had come out 6 months ago it would have a shot at being something. But now it will never get played anywhere, coming out in the wake of "24 hours" etc.

rap steve gadd (D-40), Tuesday, 20 May 2014 21:37 (eleven years ago)

or is it because mase hasn't charted a single since 2004

le goon (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 20 May 2014 21:44 (eleven years ago)

a white australian just got her first no. 1 single with a "mustard" beat, as did complete personality vacuums like kid ink, i'm sure it was within his capabilities if he'd had better timing

rap steve gadd (D-40), Tuesday, 20 May 2014 21:48 (eleven years ago)

Zero people under the age of 25 give a fuck about Ma$e.

The Reverend, Tuesday, 20 May 2014 22:34 (eleven years ago)

i mean i'm not arguing that we *haven't* reached mustard critical mass, it would be basically impossible for him to be more dominant than he currently is. but i don't think he's "over" and there's plenty of better examples than mase ("fancy" is a good one)

le goon (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 20 May 2014 22:37 (eleven years ago)

zero people GAF about Sage the Gemini (or ... 4,000 that bought his album) but they like "red nose"

rap steve gadd (D-40), Tuesday, 20 May 2014 22:38 (eleven years ago)

i'm not saying he's over, just at the point where a mustard beat (or faux mustard beat" needs to do something genuinely novel to make room for itself now, while as recently as two months ago something fairly pro forma like "24 hours" could get traction

rap steve gadd (D-40), Tuesday, 20 May 2014 22:38 (eleven years ago)

yeah i dunno if that's necessarily true. he's more prone to derivatives now ("24 hours" and the jeremih single being obvious post-"paranoid"/"show me" examples) but songs like "2 on" and "who do you love" are pretty pro forma and still rising in popularity

le goon (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 20 May 2014 22:42 (eleven years ago)

anyway i'm still optimistic about his ability to have another wave

le goon (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 20 May 2014 22:43 (eleven years ago)

maura, Tuesday, 24 June 2014 15:29 (eleven years ago)

I'm enjoying the Joe album a lot too. Stronger songs than last year's Doubleback. A good deal of it feels like Joe's answer to R. Kelly's Love Letter/Write Me Back, but the genre homages feel a little more natural in Joe's hands than they did in Kelz's

jlo's argument:

“Mariah and I did what the kids are doing. We had the time when we would drop the thing and it’d go straight to number one and the album would go straight to number one. We did that two, three, four times over. She’s probably done it many more times than even I did. At a certain point in your career, there’s a reinvention that has to go on. But there’s also, you’re in it for a marathon, it’s not about a sprint. This is not a movie, this is not an opening weekend and it tanks. There’s singles that are gonna come out over the course of the next six months. So to me, the release of the album is a celebration because it’s the beginning of something new.”

She added: “So for me it’s not about the first day sales. We’re in a different time in our career. We are in a different status than the ones that need to prove themselves and come out and go, ‘My thing has to be number one right now!’ Ours doesn’t have to. We have a fanbase, we have years behind us, we have loyalty, we have people who are interested. And that’s a blessing to be in this spot. People always try to make you feel bad about that, but honestly I think it’s a badge of honour.”

mmmmmmmmmaybe but i'm not entirely sure that ain't whistling in the dark. on mariah's album at least, I don't hear a massive bust-out third/fourth(?) single... it's not as if the r. kelly collabo is gonna catch fire.

i think the Mary, Mariah and JLo albums are all pretty good (JLo might actually be my favorite of the bunch, although this isn't really the thread to talk about it i guess), they just don't really have the killer single or career narrative to pull off that over-40 comeback thing Pharrell's doing right now (also that kind of thing unfortunately just easier for men to do than women without age becoming a big factor).

at least as per the album sales of jlo and mariah

Look at this joke I've recognised, do you recognise it as well? (forksclovetofu), Wednesday, 25 June 2014 19:29 (eleven years ago)

why would you talk about the sales instead of the quality?

lex pretend, Wednesday, 25 June 2014 19:45 (eleven years ago)

it's a call back to the earlier question of if Pharrell is going to have the best selling R&B album of the year.

I like the Mariah album pretty well when everything's said and done; it sounds expensive and slick and is weak in places but is generally better than I had hoped. It's just lacking a huge single.

Look at this joke I've recognised, do you recognise it as well? (forksclovetofu), Wednesday, 25 June 2014 19:58 (eleven years ago)

it's hard to turn your audience over for two generations and not have some sort of dip, esp w/ the way R&B sells nowadays

ha i was just coming in here to say how underwhelmed i am by it. he's still a basic nonentity who occasionally lands on a hot single to me, like how many albums deep is he and i'm not interested in HIM at all. this had the usual couple of interestingly-produced highlights but overall ehhhhhh.

lex pretend, Tuesday, 1 July 2014 20:34 (eleven years ago)

trey's hardly a nonentity. he's a very established, distinctive voice and persona at this point. it's just a very annoying voice and persona for most of this record.

Herbie Handcock (Murgatroid), Wednesday, 2 July 2014 04:30 (eleven years ago)

he's still a basic nonentity who occasionally lands on a hot single to me, like how many albums deep is he and i'm not interested in HIM at all.

In fairness Trey Songz never really asks you to be vested in him or his persona. That's never been a prerequisite for him; he's not an Usher or a Mary J. type of figure where he updates you on what's happened in his personal life since his last album. He's always emphasized material over his persona, which is pretty generic, but on this album in particular I think it works really well for him.

Evan R, Wednesday, 2 July 2014 04:46 (eleven years ago)

Yeah I don't think Trey is interested in selling a narrative or persona that goes much deeper than "ladies' man that likes to party" and there's space for that. There are times where it works and it doesn't. It works most of the time on his latest album due to much better material than his last album.

Greer, Wednesday, 2 July 2014 05:37 (eleven years ago)

yeah i meant nonentity as in uninteresting rather than unrecognisable. i think the material is more consistent than on chapter v but doesn't have the highs, the real jams, which makes it a worse trey album because his use is more "hot individual jams" than "consistent, coherent album statement"

i have a lot more residual affection for jlo (better singles stretching back a longer time) but she's much the same kind of artist (though her new one is more "some hot jams, some stretches i don't care about at all because who is here for jlo trying to be emotional on ballads").

lex pretend, Wednesday, 2 July 2014 07:34 (eleven years ago)

Yeah I don't think Trey is interested in selling a narrative or persona that goes much deeper than "ladies' man that likes to party" and there's space for that.

yeah but six albums into his career and there's been barely any progression, it's not a bad album as such but it's just completely unsurprising and i'm a bit jaded about trey at this point i guess

lex pretend, Wednesday, 2 July 2014 07:36 (eleven years ago)

on a +ve note i can def cosign that faith evans/missy/sharaya j single, and j0rdan's right, missy sounds more relaxed on it than she has in YEARS anywhere (i grew to love her "without me" feature but it did seem a bit laboured initially)

thought this was just a low-key jam at first but i can't get enough of it now. something a bit early MJB about it - the song, not kalenna's voice - the way it bumps, the way it purports to be a straight-up declaration of love but her words and delivery suggest she's still working through things. ("promise you'll never leave" introduces that paranoia most explicitly because as we know, if you leave she'll crank wu-tang in her matte black truck.) but the chorus aaahhhhh you just want to surrender

lex pretend, Thursday, 24 July 2014 10:35 (eleven years ago)

"Dangerous"

breastcrawl, Sunday, 24 August 2014 12:54 (eleven years ago)

Last night I saw the doc about back-up singers, 20 Feet From Stardom on the big screen, with good sound--almost too good at times, when veterans and retirees demonstrated that they Still Got It, but melismatics unchained balanced by, for instance, what former back-up L. Vandross asks of new hire Lisa Fischer: "Now, put some air in it," and she does this---lets it over, almost subliminally, if need be---especially with, uh, Sting (working with quite a range of white stars, like from Spector to Springsteen, also Cocker at his Belushist, Young Americans Bowie, and Stop Making Sense T. Heads) is a whole thing in here (no Dylan alas).
Interviews and much music in different eras from Darlene Love, Mabel John, Tata Vega, David Lasley, the Waters Family (who even demonstrate their freaky flying creature sounds in Avatar), Merry Clayton, Claudia Lennear, Fischer (the last three esp. with the Stones, and awesome to finally hear Clayton's vocals from the original "Gimme Shelter" now lifted out to acappella, although that way we don't get the really spot-on way she takes the Yay yeah, yeah" bit back down into the groove, right before the harmonica shows up...
Also get a much younger singer, Jennifer Hill, who was rehearsing for the Michael Jackson comeback tour, then suddenly found herself acclaimed for singing at his funeral, and (like several others before her in this doc) is now trying to go solo. She sounds great, perfectly suited to Jackson's songs (thought she was him for a second when I first heard her). Still having to do some back-up money gigs (and discovering wigs don't work as a disguise, not on YouTube, boy). Anybody heard her own studio tracks?

2nyo and netta brielle are better tho

lex pretend, Tuesday, 2 September 2014 13:47 (eleven years ago)

can't quite recall what led me to netta but via that i found www.rnbass.com (and 2nyo therein) which would appear to be an effort by a bay dj impresario guy to corral and push new stuff with a turnt up vibe

i'm sure the very whisper of any fleeting new reframing subgenre will get the immediate kneejerk old man stuckist gasface but w/e tbh, if it allows new artists to feel disinhibited or unburdened at all and maybe even helps a lil culture coalesce everyone wins

it's not really that big of a deal, plenty of ty $ post drake etc swag to sift thru as you'd expect (saw mariah 'faded' on there tho so it's not necessarily all cool poochie stuff) but i what i did especially find encouraging is the fact it's got some dj mixes on there, good sign of budding life imo

the yemi mari is vg and hq but kinda perhaps too much so... the juxtaposition of classy chords and 808 boom feels slightly belaboured and effortful much in the manner of richcraft's productions for richgirl, that "accomplished producer gets his thinking cap on for the kids" vibe

The Aiko is some nice production, but I feel like she doesn't go outside of her already well-established wheelhouse at all on that album. That would be fine if she had a lot of tricks up her sleeve as a songwriter and singer, but she doesn't. She's kind of just got that one mode.

pretty impressed by the whole album actually. was a little surprised to hear "i want you" on it since the song is rather old but it was like seeing a good old friend for the first time in ages -- great song. have to assume the sam smith cover at the end is a bonus track or something... nice but not really necessary.

luke james album really is great, loving the harmonies. backing vox on "trouble"! "exit wounds" is kinda like his version of toni braxton's "i wish", pretty raw. actually, that album's not the worst comparison - like a non-middle aged take on it.

the jennifer hudson album is strong as well - disco suits her but it avoids being craven wedding disco bait (which probably means it'll get overlooked generally). love that she's getting her dance on in general, she's a highlight on the gorgon city album too. side-eye at her collaborators including iggy azalea AND r kelly tho. that sample on "walk it out" spelling out what a producer does is so redundant tho, was timbaland feeling particularly needy what he left it in.

my favorite songs are the 15 second mike's hard lemonade interludes

but really that's a really solid album. i know a lot of people will blanch at this but i feel like this is something close to the album frank ocean could've made if he kept following the path of 'nostalgia ultra' as opposed to more or less abandoning it

Listened to the Jennifer Hudson album last night and I really like it. For a disco album with a diva at its centre it feels quite muted and subtle.

the Hudson sounds good. The production and mix on 'Bring Back the Music' are particularly sharp.

and then he mentioned amel larrieux, who, i'm sorry, i only know b/c she was questlove's prom date.

jaymc, Sunday, 21 September 2014 04:27 (eleven years ago)

one thing i couldn't figure out about alfred's slate article is why does billboard's new methodology for genre single charts have any bearing on album sales? like, if marsha ambrosius sold so many copies of her last album, where are those same fans now? is it because r&b radio is no longer playing her? are you saying that radio programmers pay attention to the trade mags, and if the trade mags say that r&b = X, programmers will unthinkingly accept those definitions?

jaymc, Sunday, 21 September 2014 04:30 (eleven years ago)

(i might've skimmed a bit.)

jaymc, Sunday, 21 September 2014 04:32 (eleven years ago)

the cause and effect he suggests, as opposed to both the chart changes and the sales downturn being results of the same overall trend, definitely isn't right. and his claim in the beginning of the 3rd paragraph, that Billboard only started counting digital sales of albums in 2012, is blatantly false.

some dude, Sunday, 21 September 2014 15:45 (eleven years ago)

maybe he meant just singles in that sentence, though, isn't really clear.

some dude, Sunday, 21 September 2014 15:46 (eleven years ago)

marsha ambrosius's home on radio has mostly been the adult r&b/'urban ac' format. her last album had "far away" on it, which crossed over to get tons of play on mainstream r&b stations as well, which i think played no small role in giving that album enough exposure to make it the relative success it was.

idk how much radio programmers pay attn to trade journals, but they definitely research the shit out of the same metrics that billboard is compiling b/c their livelihood depends on nielsen ratings. r&b radio in general has been suffering in recent years -- it's not uncommon for cities to have no r&b radio stations, just rhythmic stations and maybe a 'rhythmic oldies' station playing jam+lewis kinda stuff from the 80s. and the ones that do persist have probably felt more pressure recently to occasionally add on any crossover song that even remotely fits the sound of their playlist from artists like lorde, katy perry and even disclosure to keep ratings up.

dyl, Sunday, 21 September 2014 16:10 (eleven years ago)

so yeah, it's been tough especially for women who would normally be getting their exposure from r&b radio (the format seems really male-dominated lately, tho i'm not sure if it's unusually so) esp since crossover has become so rare and the format is having trouble staying afloat

dyl, Sunday, 21 September 2014 16:14 (eleven years ago)

Well, I wrote that in 2012 Billboard started to count digital and streaming sales and airplay chartwide. Billboard started counting digital sales in 2005 but for reasons I don't entirely understand not for the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop chart, which remained until 2012 an airplay-reliant thing.

I'll admit that cause and effect is hard to show with 100 percent accuracy. It's bad for everyone at the moment, but worse for female R&B artists; whether this is a momentary phenomenon or a sign of deeper trouble I don't know. For me the essay was an excuse to write about some good records.

guess that bundt gettin eaten (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Sunday, 21 September 2014 17:12 (eleven years ago)

deej loaf (D-40), Sunday, 21 September 2014 21:33 (eleven years ago)

billboard/soundscan started tracking digital sales, for albums and tracks, in 2003, when itunes was still a wee baby. the hot 100 didn't start taking digital track sales into account until 2005, when the volume of the sales actually became significant and nielsen solved the problem of being able to quickly combine sales data for multiple different versions of the same song (e.g. clean radio edit w/ the unedited album version). (before then, they still had the 'hot digital tracks' chart tracking relative sales of all the different individual tracks rather than songs.) the reason digital sales were only added into the all-genre hot 100 rather than the genre charts was because, as chris mentioned in his articles, those charts track the tastes of specific audiences (catered to by the respective radio format) and billboard probably didn't want to get into the business of deciding whether a song was 'r&b' (or black) enough to qualify for that chart, and there was no reliable way to tell how many downloads of a certain song were coming from that r&b audience versus a larger crossover audience.

Another new MJB track, "Therapy" is out: http://www.thisisrnb.com/2014/09/new-music-mary-j-blige-whole-damn-year/ (it's there despite the URL)

The song's not as good as the first two that were released but it's making me think that it won't be as big of a run for the dance charts as I expected (a good thing IMO).

Herbie Handcock (Murgatroid), Monday, 22 September 2014 20:44 (eleven years ago)

The tricky thing re: Amel/Jhene is that "If you like this you should be listening to THIS instead" arguments never work in persuading people. They just seem pushy and dismissive.

Also I don't really know anybody who likes Jhene Aiko all that much, so the argument carries even less water. But yeah it would have been satisfying to see that Amel album find an audience. Very special record.

tentative thumbs up for the estelle track

it's kinda trying to have one foot in trendy retro fun 90s and the other on the noble and well-trod path from britsoul to soulful house (much of which is generally of far superior albeit more trad quality), and maybe inevitably gets a mite caught in a no mans land contrived vibe by the end

then again the former is somewhat ill-advised and the latter an effective public retirement unfortunately so the awk factor in this is probs worth the shot idk

I somehow missed that MJB released a totally solid album earlier this year cause it was billed as a movie soundtrack. Ironically given the discussion above, it's really disco-y. Definitely check it out if you like the JHUD album.

goon kabuki (The Reverend), Thursday, 2 October 2014 19:04 (eleven years ago)

imo Ne-Yo was always kind of square and old-fashioned, snuck a lot of smoothness and sentimentality into the era where R&B was moving away from those qualities most quickly. i always root for him but i'm not surprised he's getting slowly shrugged off to the place Babyface went before him.

some dude, Thursday, 2 October 2014 19:13 (eleven years ago)

i would never have described ne-yo as "forward-looking" per se, notwithstanding the pretty anomalous "closer"; what's disappointing, and more perplexing, is that his songwriting skills have all but disappeared.

lex pretend, Friday, 3 October 2014 08:48 (eleven years ago)

like, it really shouldn't matter whether ne-yo is ahead of, on, or behind trends b/c that was never what made him a special artist

Caramanica in the NY Times (in agreement with most here re Aiko)

In the mainstream, Tinashe isn’t alone in these ideas, strictly speaking. The underwhelming Ms. Aiko rarely sounds awake when she sings, and has found success that way. And over the last few years, Ciara has tried a version of what Tinashe is now doing. But Ciara has always been more preoccupied with the body than the heart. Her lack of vocal presence guarantees that it is easier to connect with her music physically than emotionally.

is there a reason beyond arbitrary cool kid internet politix that its ok to hate on jhene aiko for being a kinda weak vocalist heavily reliant on atmosphere and ok to dig tinashe for the same thing

deej loaf (D-40), Monday, 6 October 2014 17:53 (eleven years ago)

I think Tinashe is a stronger vocalist than Aiko, but the key difference is that Tinashe sounds engaged. Aiko seems checked out almost to the point of self-parody

Evan R, Monday, 6 October 2014 18:00 (eleven years ago)

But Ciara has always been more preoccupied with the body than the heart.

the jhene hate is weird i don't especially get it

sort of think there is an element of side chick slander (vis a vis drake) to the way people talk about her on twitter

snrub goin up on a tuesday (J0rdan S.), Monday, 6 October 2014 19:03 (eleven years ago)

i don't particularly like her music at all but people who act like she's destroying R&B will turn around a link to a banks single or whatever

snrub goin up on a tuesday (J0rdan S.), Monday, 6 October 2014 19:06 (eleven years ago)

I don't really care for Aiko's album (just find her boring), but I also don't really see what she has to do with Tinashe. I don't even really see them as doing the same thing aside from both being women and in R&B, but I mean I guess that's enough for those looking for the easy/lazy angle.

Also that Ciara line...someone please escort Caramanica out of the building.

Greer, Monday, 6 October 2014 19:19 (eleven years ago)

i dont think what they're doing is super comparable per se, jhene's thing is more of a budget badu knit hat vibe where tinashe is a lil more asap/fashion world goth R&B trendy i guess, but a lot of the criticisms applicable to jhene could as easily be lobbed her way regardless ... i mean '2 on' is better than any jhene song but it's basically just channelling teh spirit of cassie

deej loaf (D-40), Monday, 6 October 2014 19:28 (eleven years ago)

I like Cassie but I think Tinashe is much a better stylist. She does these coy little things with her voice... she pounces and pulls away, almost like a cat toying with a mouse. It's evasive but also engaging. Aiko, by comparison, is really flat. Her little doll voice doesn't change much; she lets the music stir the emotion for her, and while that works for her sometimes (especially on that one single that sounds just like that one Drake song only without Drake), the approach is one note.

Evan R, Monday, 6 October 2014 19:33 (eleven years ago)

one note is a pretty popular and effective approach these days

tinashe & jhene have the same sort of 'down chick' appeal even if their music is stylistically a bit different (i think it's fairly similar, at least tinashe's mixtapes)

the album is tons better than her boring mixtapes, though it's mostly about execution than any particularly amazing aesthetic shift

literally no idea what j0rdan thinks "side chick" or "down chick" mean. they're both art school girls through & through.

caramanica needs a punch in the face for saying that about cici

i love how this sums up what's dull about the tinashe album (as well as what makes it ultimately ok) and also what's ok about the jhené album (as well as what makes it inherently dull)

lex pretend, Tuesday, 7 October 2014 00:06 (eleven years ago)

deej loaf (D-40), Tuesday, 7 October 2014 01:06 (eleven years ago)

literally no idea what j0rdan thinks "side chick" or "down chick" mean

the jhene side chick stuff is just a theory as to why people on twitter -- critics and normals alike -- have always pretty much dismissed her out of hand. at least on twitter -- a central hub of critical discourse! -- she's always been treated more as a meme than an artist (people always talking about falling asleep listening to her). it kinda mirrors the way people talk about the idea of the "side chick" & i think because drake was her major cosign she's caught some of that. it's just a theory! i haven't quite worked it out but i think it's something there.

but they both have total down chick appeal i think that's pretty apparent. so much of jhene's music is about chilling & smoking weed and tinashe's style is pretty tomboyish. they both have "one of the guys" kinda thing going for them.

snrub goin up on a tuesday (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 7 October 2014 02:08 (eleven years ago)

yeah i don't see any connection between the way people talk about her music and some 'side chick' narrative with Drake. it's definitely part of her whole thing that she had all these songs with big stars before she had any solo hits but that's, like, how everyone gets big now, there's no stigma to that. people genuinely love or hate her aesthetic for musical reasons.

i'm actually pretty surprised by the extent of the antipathy towards jhené, for a good while it looked like she had the internet in the palm of her hand by being so bang on trend etc. i don't really trust "in my world of twitter people" as a data set tho! i actually don't find people are as forthcoming with their criticisms on twitter as they used to be. regardless, i get the "one of the guys" thing (though it's not a particularly edifying narrative) but not the side chick thing at all. didn't drake cosign tinashe as well?

i'm still amazed that katy b managed to transform one of tinashe's mixtape tracks into this incredible thing. i went back to the original afterwards to check it hadn't been secretly amazing all along and it was just as tedious as ever

the funny thing about that track is that it has such a Baltimore club vibe (and there was totally a club remix of "Take Away" back in the day) but then i looked up the producer and of course it's some biter from New Jersey

Raccoon Newsy Wewsies (some dude), Wednesday, 8 October 2014 16:44 (eleven years ago)

i'm only tangentially engaged with it but NJ house/trap is very much its own thing right now. this is an okay wrapup from some of the voices on that scene:

the other song about butts in the top 5 (forksclovetofu), Wednesday, 8 October 2014 16:57 (eleven years ago)

Lol, I honestly posted it in here simply because this is the thread where I first encountered Banji. Missy sounds transcendent when you try to insert her into the 2014 music scene. She was very much at home in the Timbo/Neptunes era, but now? The closest thing we have is Mustard's beats, many of which could be used for either r&b or hiphop. But Sharaya J's closeness to Missy, even with the added Jersey Club dimension, is mostly a problem to her right now. It's difficult to see where she would actually fit in commercially right now.

longneck, Wednesday, 5 November 2014 18:20 (eleven years ago)

into the teyana album - i love the raggedness of her voice, a lot less mannered than a lot of her peers, gonna have to live with it for a bit to see if the other songs rise to the level of "maybe" (which was a grower for me)

the lil mo album is pretty fun!

lex pretend, Thursday, 6 November 2014 14:06 (eleven years ago)

"mannered" is exactly what i'd call Teyana's vocals. sounds like a kid trying to pull of some femme fatale shit. a couple nice tracks but i can take or leave it.

k3vin k., Monday, 10 November 2014 16:49 (eleven years ago)

xp i'd agree with raw and direct; listened to it with a woman who was very immediately affected by the lyrics and she cut it off after the first chorus
the 'swimming pools' nod at the start is confusing to me?

Steve 'n' Seagulls and Flock of Van Dammes (forksclovetofu), Monday, 10 November 2014 17:29 (eleven years ago)

think mannered is maybe a bit harsh on the teyana (sin city mock-up cover art certainly not helping in fairness) but yeah patience and suspension of disbelief does wane the longer the moody samey sludge goes on

like tinashe is indubitably extra mannered but she keep it moving

it's a quality record, a ~considered effort~ that doesn't feel cheap, i slightly regret to have to meh it but hey life's a bitch kiddo

J0rdan S., Sunday, 30 November 2014 19:03 (eleven years ago)

"i don't mind" might be my #1 radio jam out there right now. i was really surprised to find out it was a dr. luke beat... between "i don't mind" and the little disco lilt of "time of our lives" it's a nice little moment for him right now (let's ignore "only"). i wonder if he's going for beats w/ a lighter touch on purpose or if the "i don't mind"/"time of our lives" one-two is a coincidence. speaking of usher, the "time of our lives" bridge is usher as hell.

anyway back to "i don't mind" -- i heard it on the radio in miami last week and i was pondering if someone had exposed luke to jook & a few moments later the DJ blended it into ball greezy - "shone" and it sounded perfect

J0rdan S., Sunday, 30 November 2014 19:09 (eleven years ago)

"new flame" is one of my least favorite songs of the year, shipley rating 5 songs worse than it is actually massively overrating it -- i can't stand how dinky that beat is and how the vocal melodies track exactly onto it. it's such a bad & unskillful imitation of jim jonsin. ross' verse is fun though.

J0rdan S., Sunday, 30 November 2014 19:12 (eleven years ago)

Thanks for all the otm mentions of Luke James, would have missed him otherwise. After latest listen to Deluxe Edition, I posted on Twitter:

Luke James, s/t Deluxe: pushes romantic distress toward distortion, sudden showers, headphones splendor, "constantly risking absurdity" amen

Luke James, s/t Deluxe cont. Didn't know, but figures he's from NOLA w bold range, also deep AfriBrit studies extending US R&B mainstream(?)

dow, Monday, 1 December 2014 03:01 (eleven years ago)

what's the afribrit thing mean?

he's awesome, i like luke james a lot, i think his next project will be better than this last one ... the album gave me the feeling of, and i think i may be accidentally stealing this idea from andy k, being just loaded with the best of a lot of songs he's recorded, but without much concern for cohesion etc

deej loaf (D-40), Monday, 1 December 2014 04:54 (eleven years ago)

that said, no bad songs on it

deej loaf (D-40), Monday, 1 December 2014 04:54 (eleven years ago)

"deep AfriBrit studies": seems like he knows a lot about, say, Massive Attack, trip-hop dub, other Caribbean-associated elements in UK popular music, and the Brit response to "normal" and more overtly out-there American R&B (some of Marvin Gaye's more adventurous sessions, Michael, Janet, R. Kelly, Bilal, Miguel---nothing too specific, just little flashes and jabs of association in my listening experience).

dow, Monday, 1 December 2014 05:18 (eleven years ago)

"trip-hop dub" missing a comma sorry

dow, Monday, 1 December 2014 05:19 (eleven years ago)

I think his style and sensibilty makes it cohesive *enough*, considering that he's into flashy, even dazzling effects (oh yeah, somewhere in the initial tracks, I was thinking of Erasure, or some other kind of Vince Clarke patterns, behind him: "Brit," but not "Afri," 'til James made use of 'em)

dow, Monday, 1 December 2014 05:26 (eleven years ago)

i don't think a single thing usher did this year inspired any thoughts or feelings in me

nice list shipz, albeit all my favourites off it are mostly the carry-overs from 2013 albums; i might have to go back to the usher, khaled, alsina ones to see if there was anything i missed in them the first time round

really expected sevyn streeter to happen a bit more in 2014 :(

i really liked that luke james album in the week i first heard it and then i never felt compelled to return to it and can't remember much of it now; it felt v ~serious. and now he's dating jessie j????

lex pretend, Monday, 1 December 2014 10:51 (eleven years ago)

uxorious gazumping (monotony), Monday, 1 December 2014 10:59 (eleven years ago)

gotta give it up to shipley for repping that khaled record, which I agree is great & fun but gets virtually no love because its 'commercial' or khaled's not serious enough or whatever stupid reason

deej loaf (D-40), Monday, 1 December 2014 12:55 (eleven years ago)

J0rdan S., Monday, 1 December 2014 16:58 (eleven years ago)

i heard it like 75 times on vacation and i still don't know who sings what parts -- jeremih has the chorus right? i really only recognize future's cooing + his repurposed "body party" ad libs

it also made me realize that i have zero idea what august alsina sounds like

J0rdan S., Monday, 1 December 2014 16:59 (eleven years ago)
