http://thump.vice.com/words/techno-girl-problems-i-hate-explaining-my-taste-in-music-to-normal-people

this is painful.

errant flynn, Saturday, 11 January 2014 00:03 (twelve years ago)

I can be insufferably pretentious about house and techno, and returning home to the Bay Area

stopped there

a group of dadfucker types (Matt P), Saturday, 11 January 2014 00:06 (twelve years ago)

ok i skimmed it. too close to home. it could be worse, idk, i mean the western flyover u.s. rave scene is.. not great. when your roots are jam bands. electronic music is not for the hipsters out here. pretty shabby reason for an article though.

a group of dadfucker types (Matt P), Saturday, 11 January 2014 00:29 (twelve years ago)

pretty sure it's because we have no black people.

a group of dadfucker types (Matt P), Saturday, 11 January 2014 00:32 (twelve years ago)

there are no black people who live here. awful phrasing, sorry.

a group of dadfucker types (Matt P), Saturday, 11 January 2014 00:33 (twelve years ago)

more accurately there's just not much in the way of dancehall culture out here and never was (talking about the intermountain west not the bay area, obviously, but it's probably true for the bay area too, a lot more so than los angeles, which is a big exception i think.)

a group of dadfucker types (Matt P), Saturday, 11 January 2014 00:44 (twelve years ago)

the "scene" in the Bay is nowhere near LA or New York, but it isn't too shabby. Icee Hot, Honey Soundsystem, No Way Back, the Sunset parties...there's actually a pretty interesting and diverse scene, it's just that there aren't that many *producers* of house and techno out here that are well known elsewhere.

hilarious topless cookie chef (the table is the table), Saturday, 11 January 2014 02:50 (twelve years ago)

and i say this with a bias AGAINST the bay area, because i've lived here for more than a half a decade now, and really don't like it very much, in most ways.

hilarious topless cookie chef (the table is the table), Saturday, 11 January 2014 02:51 (twelve years ago)

that article is painful on so many levels... but i am mostly just empathizing with her future self that will want to shrivel up and die at the memory of having written it.

I heard people raving about how mr ties is an amazing dj so I'm listening to his boiler room daytime set and so far almost every transition is a trainwreck. is this to be expected from him? and no, I'm not one of those mixing fascists, I'm just curious. here's the set if you're interested: https://soundcloud.com/platform/mr-ties

Chewshabadoo, Friday, 7 February 2014 21:40 (twelve years ago)

Odd label - theres one particular one from 1999 i REALLY want, but its pretty much impossible to find

cog, Friday, 7 February 2014 21:54 (twelve years ago)

frak is very strange, but i like this track by them which is much tamer than most of their stuff i've heard:

Good stuff. I hadn’t ever noticed the label before but picked up the by Five O'Clock Traffic from 2013, some wonky gems on that.

Chewshabadoo, Saturday, 8 February 2014 00:34 (twelve years ago)

sometimes the noisy, abrasive techno just gives me a headache (full disclosure: i am o-l-d old). this, tho, i like

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dXgX0pPX7E8

some NSFW images here (semi-shrouded porn scenes, from the looks of it).

Daniel, Esq 2, Saturday, 8 February 2014 01:40 (twelve years ago)

Container records always have a track or two with that little extra special something.

Chewshabadoo, Saturday, 8 February 2014 02:44 (twelve years ago)

yeah, their LP from 2012 is their best, imo

karl...arlk...rlka...lkar..., Saturday, 8 February 2014 02:45 (twelve years ago)

They do seem to have gone further away from the dancefloor with each release.

Chewshabadoo, Saturday, 8 February 2014 02:58 (twelve years ago)

I like the almost Millsian takes on techno on these anonymous 12s http://www.tabernaclerecords.co.uk/hfp.html

Chewshabadoo, Sunday, 9 February 2014 00:20 (twelve years ago)

Is "Bobbins" a real genre now, or has one of you got a job at Fact?

http://www.factmag.com/2014/02/10/david-beckhams-done-a-chart-for-beatport-and-its-full-of-bobbins-tech-house/

"righteous indignation shit" (Branwell Bell), Monday, 10 February 2014 15:29 (twelve years ago)

what does "bobbins" mean?

Daniel, Esq 2, Monday, 10 February 2014 15:35 (twelve years ago)

Haha, I wonder who wrote the article.

From wikipedia: A bobbin is a spindle or cylinder, with or without flanges, on which wire, yarn, thread or film is wound"

In other words, it is for rolling thread

Fiddler on a hot tin roof (ed.b), Monday, 10 February 2014 16:28 (twelve years ago)

Very nice one from Pampa
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=APWRP4MB6QY

tarping, Monday, 10 February 2014 16:36 (twelve years ago)

Bobbins is a UK slang term for stuff that is not really that good http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=bobbins. I remember the first thread was Electro House Bobbins which I have always assumed was a little tongue-in-cheek comment about the brashness and non-pure nature of that genre.

Chewshabadoo, Monday, 10 February 2014 18:33 (twelve years ago)

That Soulphiction one could do with being a little less wacky but I think Pampa Records might be my favourite label right now.

boxedjoy, Monday, 10 February 2014 20:13 (twelve years ago)

I thought bobbins meant like as in bobbin your head to the beat.

dan138zig (Durrr Durrr Durrrrrr), Tuesday, 11 February 2014 01:28 (twelve years ago)

that was my guess, too.

dan138zig (Durrr Durrr Durrrrrr), Wednesday, 5 March 2014 08:48 (eleven years ago)

Yeah, I had it on in the background the other day and nothing really grabbed me. That said, I think it's probably something that would be great to have on vinyl and actually mix.

Had the same realization reading the Actress thread the other day, hadn't really considered how great those track would be to work with on different speeds with other records.

Holy shit @ that Terrence Parker album, just straight in there, no pissing about, banger after banger after banger. The final three tracks are just huge.

Think I actually prefer it to the new Moodymann which has loads of great moments but feels kinda diffuse and meandering as a whole.

yeah it's a vg album, feels nicely timed with the upcoming fantastic roy davis jr one (that got zero interest when i bumped his thread)

Terrence Parker album reminds me a lot of the Floorplan album, highly recommended.

Good grief! That Parker album is dynamite!

xelab, Wednesday, 26 March 2014 13:13 (eleven years ago)

agreed.

i just received hardcore traxx: dance mania and the my love is underground compilation. the former has been big-upped here a few times. the latter is consistently great, banging, classy 90s house.

mattresslessness, Wednesday, 26 March 2014 20:56 (eleven years ago)

i'm djing in a few weeks and i'm tempted to play like 90% of it, only leaving out the dark 80s chicago track (project democracy ft china - is this dream for real? (psychedub)) because that one belongs in a very dark basement.

Curious about your thoughts on Delroy Edwards, the late great. I feel similar, and I've really liked several tracks in last couple years. Diminishing returns? Needs someone to say no occasionally? Seems like he's got the attention at the moment so he's putting out every fried tape he ever hit the record button on. That said, kinda like a few of the things on that Slowed Down Funk "tape." But it's probably 15 tracks too many. And that right there's the problem I guess.

The answer code request album is fucking gorgeous. Hits all the right 90s ambient techno buttons, with the undercurrent of ostgut oomph. Very nice. (The kink album, on the other hand, not so much).

Oooh, I love contributing to this thread again, even if it means having to go on a month long record trip in Europe first.

Seen a lot of Life And Death acts this summer (esp. Tale of Us, Mind Against), seems weird that this is post-minimal generation dance music. It's tagged "Romantic", but seems like a lot of these guys were Emo or something before getting into dance music. I definitely appreciate the consistent style and vision, but wonder what other ILXORs think of the label?

Surprise, surprise - but this is because?

MikoMcha, Thursday, 14 August 2014 20:05 (eleven years ago)

'put a bird on it' dance. j/k. it seems appropriate in both description and dullness. i like some of it ok. more than the really dull sub-villalobos minimal-minimal on nick curly's label i tricked myself into buying over the weekend, because it was on a chart with this other minimal-minimal track i really vibed to, falko brocksieper - grindelwald xp

mattresslessness, Thursday, 14 August 2014 20:06 (eleven years ago)

Yeah, well, been listening to some of the mixes from the label and they have all the moves from "classic" minimal I love (some Eulberg-ish tracks, Pantha du Prince styles, some Luciano 'Octogonal', etc), but then you hear it all about hearing all boiled down.

MikoMcha, Thursday, 14 August 2014 20:10 (eleven years ago)

I think I've been caught by Life of Us playing this music in the sunset at the end of a big day, I did leave for another dancefloor, but the memory still sticks with me...

MikoMcha, Thursday, 14 August 2014 20:12 (eleven years ago)

meant to say there that the "romantic" tag is as obvious and insipid as some of songs and sounds, but i could probably be won over to it like anything w/ melody and pop structure because i am secretly a sap xp

this kind of thing is like catnip to me + i do think it's pretty good for what it is.

The Tale Of Us Renaissance mix was one of my favourites last year but I find all their own productions a bit anaemic and the actual sounds are too cheap and harsh for sense of epic they aim for.

boxedjoy, Thursday, 14 August 2014 20:25 (eleven years ago)

"Mind Against" does sound like it would have some kind of crabcore tracks up their sleeve, I dunno...

mattresslessness, Thursday, 14 August 2014 21:09 (eleven years ago)

agree with tlg in this case. everything can't be epically melancholy and transcendent all the time, it sounds stupid. some acts that i mostly like tend to slip into this sound at festivals at times, e.g. dixon. lots of loooong bass sounds and elongated vowel vocals.

tiresomely trippy

mattresslessness, Thursday, 14 August 2014 21:39 (eleven years ago)

dull and anemic are good descriptions. the truth is though that i just hate limp emo. as a vibe in general, but especially especially in dance music. i don't mind melancholy per se, but that strain of mopey euro dude vocal house that can track it's lineage back to slam's "this world" ... Ugh, destroy

2004, but it was a four track 12", i presume the other tracks were unreleased - been difficult/expensive to buy for ages, didnt realize it had had a digital release (Whats a Girl To Do is the track thats made it difficult to buy)

saer, Thursday, 4 December 2014 10:42 (eleven years ago)

D1 was a good label for a while, the bombjack 12" is a huge personal fav

saer, Thursday, 4 December 2014 10:43 (eleven years ago)

did breaker 1 2 get posted last year? i heard a clip of it around when it came out, forgot about it, and just came back to it again and am really digging it.

Just seem this at top of thread, yeah I like this a lot - I havent bought many 2014 releases, only liked about 15 records this year, but this was one of them

saer, Thursday, 4 December 2014 11:13 (eleven years ago)

Yeah it's not been a great year on the house/techno front but there has been some decent stuff. I've really liked the Joey Anderson, Gesloten Cirkel, Kassem Mosse and Objekt albums. The Livity Sound remix tracks were sick. Omar S put out some quality material. All Caps and Dixon Avenue Basement Jams did Glsgow proud

paolo, Thursday, 4 December 2014 19:36 (eleven years ago)

you know it hasn't been the best year but i still think we're in a minor golden age for proper house / techno!

and i agree wholeheartedly w paolo on the good stuff

the late great, Thursday, 4 December 2014 19:54 (eleven years ago)

that fatima yamaha web release with all those tracks actually came out in 2012, and yeah it's amazing. idk why it isn't listed on discogs but here's the bandcamp link: http://d1recordings.bandcamp.com/album/fatima-yamaha-done061

karl...arlk...rlka...lkar..., Thursday, 4 December 2014 20:01 (eleven years ago)

i think there's overall less bobbins i like lately, but the ones i do like i really like a lot, and idk if i've changed or house and techno has changed, but it doesn't feel as tied to any particular trends, there seems to be a lot of different bubbles existing simultaneously that mix in nice and unexpected ways. me and house/techno are in a good place right now

karl...arlk...rlka...lkar..., Thursday, 4 December 2014 20:05 (eleven years ago)

digging that general ludd track

karl...arlk...rlka...lkar..., Thursday, 4 December 2014 20:23 (eleven years ago)

I didnt mean to do a state-of-the-nation post, I think things are always changing, and experiences are not the same anyhow. Ive heard a huge amount of great music this year, as usual no idea what most of it is or when its from, but the records i have bought have just mostly ended up not being 2014 releases, but some of them were. Theres so many great records out there, i dont mind when they are from

saer, Thursday, 4 December 2014 20:29 (eleven years ago)

it's probably a sign that I'm out of the loop since it feels like this has been a great year.

ed.b, Friday, 5 December 2014 00:37 (eleven years ago)

um there's a new steffi album ??!??!?!?!!

emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Friday, 5 December 2014 06:07 (eleven years ago)

the steffi album was a slight letdown for me. the first track is like detroit electro and i was hoping for more in that style, but the rest is straightforward classic techno. still pretty nice though.

one time gaffled 'em up (one time), Friday, 5 December 2014 07:59 (eleven years ago)

so if anyone could recommend some recent electro that sounds like this, i'd be grateful.

How recent is recent? I buy a lot of records, dont always pay attention to the year!

saer, Friday, 5 December 2014 09:34 (eleven years ago)

that fatima yamaha album is amazing, thanks! guess "What's A Girl To Do" is on that Workshop Boiler Room mix, should have investigated earlier based on that.

toby, Friday, 5 December 2014 14:05 (eleven years ago)

Not sure I can dismiss this year yet, there's been some great LPs Leon Vynehall, Tin Man, Herbert, Moodymann and plenty of good singles

beatgeneration, Friday, 5 December 2014 16:02 (eleven years ago)

This year's been like a enjoyable midset roller in between peaks.

Re: lnrdcroy, that's really good.

1080p similarly wasn't really on my radar until the EOY lists and have enjoyed a couple of the label mixes I've listened to. Artwork is wtf tho!

MikoMcha, Thursday, 11 December 2014 09:57 (eleven years ago)

yeah that lnrdcroy is rad!!

the late great, Thursday, 11 December 2014 18:54 (eleven years ago)

didn't really think much of lnrdcroy up to now because i had only heard him on a split with this boreal track, which kinda blew his track away

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G31P9AMYIEM

one of my top tracks of the year

the late great, Thursday, 11 December 2014 18:55 (eleven years ago)

i'm struggling to articulate what i don't like about that floating points track, i have similar feelings about it as i do the leon vynehall stuff i've heard lately

xelab, Friday, 12 December 2014 12:32 (eleven years ago)

i posted the lnrdcroy lp on the doing it wrong thread months ago to crickets, smh

karl...arlk...rlka...lkar..., Monday, 15 December 2014 02:03 (eleven years ago)

perhaps it should have gone here on the doing it right thread instead

saer, Monday, 15 December 2014 02:08 (eleven years ago)

it could've gone here, but i thought it'd more likely be appreciated there b/c my impression was there are people who browse that thread and not this one b/c they're more into the ambient and idm stuff, and i assumed all the bobbins peeps look at that thread too

karl...arlk...rlka...lkar..., Monday, 15 December 2014 02:19 (eleven years ago)

maybe the world just wasn't read for lnrdcroy yet, keep up ppl
