this is t.i. vs. the juan maclean for me

prolego, Friday, 24 January 2014 16:33 (eleven years ago)

ilm really liked girls aloud huh

prolego, Friday, 24 January 2014 16:34 (eleven years ago)

This seems like a far better list than the winners to me, gonna throw in for "Call Me Maybe" though, with "What You Now", "No Good Advice", and "Beautiful" lagging a bit behind.

justfanoe (Greg Fanoe), Friday, 24 January 2014 16:34 (eleven years ago)

Hard in da Paint followed by Atlas (really? this came second? woah), then the rest...

he said, even sexilyer, (dog latin), Friday, 24 January 2014 16:34 (eleven years ago)

wow this is a pretty good selection apart from battles. instinct tells me "what you know" - which was probably the worst victim of INJUSTICE, too, didn't it lose to "crazy"? fuck "crazy".

"no good advice", "yeah", "happy house", "hard in da paint", "call me maybe" and "#beautiful" are all 10/10 flawless and important classics as well, obv, but "what you know" is a contender from one of my favourite songs of. all. time.

lex pretend, Friday, 24 January 2014 16:35 (eleven years ago)

Don't think I know the TI song. Thought it was the Big Krit track (which I like) at first.

he said, even sexilyer, (dog latin), Friday, 24 January 2014 16:35 (eleven years ago)

Call me Maybe almost certainly

this harmless group of nerds and the women that love them (forksclovetofu), Friday, 24 January 2014 16:38 (eleven years ago)

oh and then i see "what you know" and i get conflicted

this harmless group of nerds and the women that love them (forksclovetofu), Friday, 24 January 2014 16:39 (eleven years ago)

ok will probz regret this ordering

1. what you know
2. no good advice
3. hard in da paint
4. #beautiful
5. happy house
6. call me maybe
7. yeah
[insert million-song gap]
8. daniel
9. atlas

lex pretend, Friday, 24 January 2014 16:41 (eleven years ago)

Did you leave out Lana Del Rey on purpose? Because lol.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 24 January 2014 16:45 (eleven years ago)

oh fuck

prolego, Friday, 24 January 2014 16:45 (eleven years ago)

i knew i'd make some mistake. polls make me so anxious

prolego, Friday, 24 January 2014 16:46 (eleven years ago)

hopefully everyone's still caught up in the lana backlash so it won't affect anyone's decision

prolego, Friday, 24 January 2014 16:47 (eleven years ago)

"Yeah" is still my favorite LCD track by some margin, and probably in my top five of the 00s. Can't not vote for it here.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 24 January 2014 16:48 (eleven years ago)

So we're just going to try to forget that Lana Del Rey ever existed?

MarkoP, Friday, 24 January 2014 16:49 (eleven years ago)

LCD, then Carly Rae and Juan Maclean.

skip, Friday, 24 January 2014 16:49 (eleven years ago)

TI towers over the rest.

Spottie, Friday, 24 January 2014 16:52 (eleven years ago)

I voted "Atlas", maybe not the most defensible choice but it always brings a smile to my face

frogbs, Friday, 24 January 2014 16:55 (eleven years ago)

So we're just going to try to forget that Lana Del Rey ever existed?

plz plz let's do this

think I'm picking one of these:

T.I., "What You Know"
Battles, "Atlas"
Bat For Lashes, "Daniel"
Carly Rae Jepsen, "Call Me Maybe"

SHAUN (DJP), Friday, 24 January 2014 16:58 (eleven years ago)

Lex you left off Biology from your rankings. (Which would be my pick, btw. But I could go for pretty much any of these, save Battles, on any given day.)

pearly-dewdrops' bops (monotony), Friday, 24 January 2014 16:59 (eleven years ago)

well I have to vote Atlas don't I

pessimishaim (imago), Friday, 24 January 2014 17:00 (eleven years ago)

Happy House
#Beautiful
What You Know
Call Me Maybe
No Good Advice

Bryan Fairy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 24 January 2014 17:04 (eleven years ago)

voted biology

but never will not love what you know, call me maybe & yeah abt equally too

johnny crunch, Friday, 24 January 2014 17:07 (eleven years ago)

1. atlas
2. biology
3. daniel
4. call me maybe
5. hard in da paint

dyl, Friday, 24 January 2014 17:13 (eleven years ago)

I'm drawing a complete & total blank on what What You Know was?

Failing that being something awesome I've forgotten, it's got to be Happy House bcz iTunes tells me I've listened to it 200 times now , but every time I think it might be played out & I'm over it, it comes on random & I'm totally just all "launch me into spaaaaaaace!!!!" again.

I'd rather be the swallow than a dick (Branwell Bell), Friday, 24 January 2014 17:18 (eleven years ago)

Waka, by miles and miles and miles

I actually probably would have voted for "Video Games"

justfanoe (Greg Fanoe), Friday, 24 January 2014 18:16 (eleven years ago)

Biology. I still love that song.

xelab, Friday, 24 January 2014 18:25 (eleven years ago)

T.I., "What You Know"

then

Waka Flocka Flame, "Hard in da Paint"
Carly Rae Jepsen, "Call Me Maybe"
Mariah Carey ft. Miguel, "#Beautiful"
LCD Soundsystem, "Yeah"

don't know the rest

Euler, Friday, 24 January 2014 18:28 (eleven years ago)

battles by a country-mile over the other songs.

Daniel, Esq 2, Friday, 24 January 2014 18:31 (eleven years ago)

Atlas is the only one of these I even remotely want to vote for, which I'm afraid gives off the wrong impression.

Alfre, Lord Woodard (Eric H.), Friday, 24 January 2014 18:31 (eleven years ago)

Bat For Lashes for totally personal, non-musical reasons

voodoo chili, Friday, 24 January 2014 18:35 (eleven years ago)

I would have voted for "What You Know" if I were born with a different first name

voodoo chili, Friday, 24 January 2014 18:35 (eleven years ago)

yeah right, Lashes

pessimishaim (imago), Friday, 24 January 2014 18:38 (eleven years ago)

chekhprivan (wins), Friday, 24 January 2014 18:40 (eleven years ago)

i feel guilty voting for What You Know bcz it was clearly the winner that year and 'crazy' only won for weird probably gerrymandering or corruption related reasons, not fair for the rest of them

my whole family is catholic so look at the pickle i'm in (zachlyon), Saturday, 25 January 2014 01:07 (eleven years ago)

oh wait of course i know the TI song. I like it loads.

'what you know'
'yeah'
'happy house'
'biology'
'call me maybe'
'#beautiful'
'atlas'
'no good advice'
'hard in da paint'
'daniel'

but call me maybe has lasting appeal too

this harmless group of nerds and the women that love them (forksclovetofu), Monday, 27 January 2014 07:12 (eleven years ago)

Hhahah would have voted for Video Games if it had been included -- Atlas was such a fun song about sandwiches.

^ enlightening post (sarahell), Monday, 27 January 2014 07:46 (eleven years ago)

Have you guys listened to "Atlas" lately? Shit has not aged well at all. That being said, "Biology" all the way.

Murgatroid, Monday, 27 January 2014 07:50 (eleven years ago)

Was Atlas really as far back as 2007? Jeeeezus....

he said, smarmily (dog latin), Monday, 27 January 2014 09:18 (eleven years ago)

Lex you left off Biology from your rankings. (Which would be my pick, btw. But I could go for pretty much any of these, save Battles, on any given day.)

so i did. never been that keen on "biology" - something quite graceless and clumsy about how it lurches from section to section, though after eight years i don't hate it or anything. it would be ninth, after "video games" in eighth

lex pretend, Monday, 27 January 2014 09:35 (eleven years ago)

tbh the presence of "no good advice" which is one of the hardest, no-fucks-given nihilist female working class pop manifestos ever really doesn't show "biology" (which is basically a load of nonsense) in a good light

lex pretend, Monday, 27 January 2014 09:36 (eleven years ago)

SHUT YOUR MOUTH BECAUSE YOUR SHIT MIGHT SHOW vs xenomania randomiser burbles, seriously

lex pretend, Monday, 27 January 2014 09:37 (eleven years ago)

"no good advice" and "hard in da paint" are basically the same song actually. what are GA doing but going hard in the muthafucking paint, what is waka doing but rejecting society's good advice

lex pretend, Monday, 27 January 2014 09:38 (eleven years ago)

'No Good Advice' was only the 2nd GA single and I don't think they ever bettered it.

This is a really strong list but 'Happy House' is one of my favourite things ever, so that.

hard in the paint

flopson, Monday, 27 January 2014 17:56 (eleven years ago)

didn't read hard in the paint the first time. so probably a coin toss between that and what you know

Spottie, Monday, 27 January 2014 18:10 (eleven years ago)

"Happy House" is prob my second favorite song of the past decade after "Adorn".

After that, Waka > T.I. > Mariah > Battles > Carly Rae > LCD > Lana > Bat for Lashes

Dunno Girls Aloud.

i think it won mostly because that's the only "rock" choice, while the other "pop" choices split the vote amongst themselves. not that i'm discounting its victory but these kind of polls often boil down to the politics of different ilm voting blocs

Atlas is great but annoying at the same time. I used to like mixing bits of 'Sailing on the Seven Seas' by OMD when I played it out. I was DJing a small viking themed quasi illegal outdoor rave and seeing this ancient hippie with a full on massive beard and a viking helmet go berserk to that bit will always stay with me.

But I voted for Waka. I mean that song is so big it dwarves Atlas.

There is only one Dan on ILX, that's quite enough, I can't handle 7 of them.

I could actually get up and take the record down off the shelf and play it, that would be simpler than moaning about it on the interweb, but it really has got to the point where I am so lazy I will look a song up on the internet before I get a CD down off the shelf.

What is my life. I suppose it is the same life where ILM has actually forgotten Girls Aloud.

Snow White and the 7 Dans. I can't cope.

And Bat For Lashes, oddly, is right next to Battles in my CD collection, so I'm going to listen to that, and try not to imagine seven Dans.

Huntingdonshire has not been a county in quite some time!

It just seems like such an Essex shore thing to do. Actually, it sounds more like a totally Norfolk thing to do (complete with burning boat pyre) but Essex is inherently funnier than East Anglia.

doglato dozzy (dog latin), Saturday, 1 February 2014 10:17 (eleven years ago)

I was going to say 80s, but Huntingdonshire was absorbed into Cambridgeshire in, like 1974!

(And how can you forget Viking themed. That's the best part of it. Actually I thought the Viking Rave scene was centred mostly down on the Isle of Wight, but what do I know.)

Another derivative, mainstream-sounding girl made of beards (Branwell Bell), Saturday, 1 February 2014 10:17 (eleven years ago)

But yeah def haven't been to a small quasi legal viking themed outdoor rave for a few months now so it's not like they happen all the time or anything.

xp - oh duh, you are right, Atlas just has that shuffle bit, it's the first track on the album that leads into it that has the nice polyrhythms

bills mar honoring da silver and black (sarahell), Saturday, 1 February 2014 10:18 (eleven years ago)

(Hertfordshire is totally the best shire*.)

((*I may be slightly biased on this))

I am really not enjoying this Bat For Lashes record, though. I loved the first one and played it to death, but i think I played this one twice and put it away.

And yeah, the track before and the track after were polyrhythmic so I could see where you were coming from, Sarahel, but Atlas is pure Schaffel.

Another derivative, mainstream-sounding girl made of beards (Branwell Bell), Saturday, 1 February 2014 10:20 (eleven years ago)

After the failure of Huntingdonshire to become a unitary authority, a Huntingdonshire Society was set up to promote awareness of Huntingdonshire as a historic county, and to campaign for its reinstatement as an administrative and ceremonial entity. In 2002 it established an annual "Huntingdonshire Day" on 25 April, the birthday of Oliver Cromwell.

Fuck Huntingdonshire, basically.

Actually, Two Suns has picked up and it's better than I remember it. Just Daniel and the other single that was on after it were terrible. (Destroy any song that has a chorus that goes "My name is (my songwriting alter ego) and I...") Why do I never give second albums enough of a chance? Seems like something lots of us do, given the album results.

The best thing about Battles was watching Ty and not-Ty fingertap guitar while simultaneously playing melodies on synths, that was the best. Aside from that posi memory, I can't remember why I didn't dig that show/their record. Vaguely remember feeling like it was a novelty cartoon version of Laddio Bolocko for the jock crowd? yeah if anything "biology" was in hindsight when girls aloud jumped the shark - when they they started to put too much emphasis on ~wacky~ song structures and lyrical non-sequiturs over and above good songwriting (or at least xenomania becoming too self-aware that was their main draw and running it to the ground with increasingly diminishing returns - basically tangled up onwards). they did the whole crazy song structure shtick much better elsewhere too ("the show", "wake me up") - maybe "biology" got the love because it was so front and centre and obvious with it and by that point british critics were willing to get on board and start taking them seriously? idk but it seems so stitched together. that being said the "WE GIVE IT UP AND THEN THEY TAKE IT AWAY..." section is still such an amazing pop rush.
