Serge Gainsbourg: Search and Destroy

Serge has a pretty massive discography...and I don't really know where to start. I think L'Histoire de Melody Nelson is brilliant...maybe one of my favorite records of all time...
I haven't heard anything else though. So what are some of his best records, and what should I avoid?

Melissa W, Monday, 14 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

My two personal favourites are 'Vu De L'Exterieur' (the one with all the monkeys on the sleeve) and 'L'Homme A Tete De Chou', both from his semi-retirement 70s phase (coasting on the royalties from 'Je T'Aime', bringing up Charlotte), when he sounded like Gilbert O'Sullivan making dirty phone calls to God.

Avoid: 'Rock Around The Bunker'. Mel Brooks did it better in 'The Producers'.

Momus, Monday, 14 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Bonny & clyde = killer music to cum to, as was most of what he did with BB.

Geoff, Monday, 14 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Historie of Melody is excellent - partly arab strap 20 30 years before but so much more. All of the stuff with Jane Birkin is ace too - did anyone see her on Graham Norton? Completely mad, but in and endearing way...

Destroy - nothing I've heard is bad, but I've been told that the later stuff is a bit ropey.

Robin, Monday, 14 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Most of the 80s music should be destroyed. I seem to vaguely remember some Reggae style song he did.
I really liked what he did with Vanessa Paradis (musically of course).
Of course everyone should search the show which starred him and Whitney Houston. Hilarious!
"Requiem Pour Un Con" is fantastic!

Stevie Nixed, Monday, 14 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Yep, I'd say "L'Homme A Tete De Chou" would be the one to go for next - particularly rude lyrics on this alb, so beware of easily offended French speakers when playing.

Andrew L, Monday, 14 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

search: histoire de melodie nelson. if isaac hayes were a white perverted frenchman, this is the album he would've made. great stuff, particularly the semi-title track. also search "bonnie and clyde," one of the finest singles of the 60s. there's a monkey on the track! or at least i like to think so.

destroy: oh, there's some stuff to destroy alright. but the names are all in french and thus i'm at a loss to recall them. i could sing them if you like.

fred solinger, Monday, 14 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Oh, the only thing I could really advocate destroying with a clean conscience is the bulk of the eighties stuff, it can be pretty dire. Especially "Love on the Beat". "Lemon Incest" is one of those songs that's held up as his most naughty and controversial, but musically it's just pretty lame. It doesn't hold up in the same way that "Je t'aime" does.

As for the rest, search everything. Honestly. I have managed to get nearly everything and it's mostly wonderful, from the jazz tinged early stuff to the straight out pop! of his collaboration with Bridgette Bardot.

Nicole, Monday, 14 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I think "Love On The Beat" is a riot. The words are impossibly dirty (or so it seemed to me at the time - I was 12) and it still got pop- radio airplay here. If I remember correctly, it was the first record to ever get the PRMC Parental Advisory thing in the US, even though the words are entirely in french.

Patrick, Monday, 14 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Which just goes to show how wrong-headed the PMRC was. Honestly, did they think 8 year olds were going to be listening to Serge, let alone being damaged by the lyrics somehow? Lame.

Love on the Beat has naughty lyrics, but then so does a lot of Serge. In terms of music, though, it struck me as particularly weak.

Nicole, Monday, 14 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I could've lived my entire life not knowing what someone's "music to cum to" was.

I'm with Nicole, pretty much destroy later stuff which I couldn't be bothered with. Search anything with a chick singer from the 60s. That's awesome stuff.

Ally, Tuesday, 15 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Search: 'Melody Nelson', 'Bonnie & Clyde', 'Initials B.B.', 'Qui Est "In", Qui est "Out"' etc. oh and also 'Poupee de Cire, Poupee de Son' which he wrote for France Gall to win the Eurovision. and many others.

Destroy:

1. 'Lemon Incest' - many condemn it for its controversial lyrics; I condemn it for its terrifyingly awful '80s production.

2. 'Love on the Beat' - did someone actually praise this? Jesus, it's awful, a musical abortion, again over sickening '80s production. The person who keeps yelping "oww!" like they're being pimp-slapped does not improve things.

3. 'Aux Armes Et Cetera' - again, controversial for the wrong reasons. This is Serge mumbling the lyrics of the French national anthem to a reggae accompaniment. Its opponents see it as an insult to French national honour. And I'm not surprised, the reggae accompaniment is embarrassingly bad.

4. I'm beginnging to think Serge's "What I said is 'I want to fuck you'" comment to Whitney Houston is not actually big and clever and in fact typifies the talentless, bloated boor he became in later life.

Dirty Vicar, Wednesday, 16 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

----- This is Serge mumbling the lyrics of the French national anthem to a reggae accompaniment. Its opponents see it as an insult to French national honour. -----

Whattaguy!! :)

So what about that "Gainsbourg & Birkin" album? Worth checking out? I downloaded '69 Annee Erotique'...liked what I heard.

Omar, Thursday, 17 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I forgot to say, I'm not actually a Sergespert, I just have one compilation album of his. It's chronologically sorted and it works on an Early Stuff Good, Late Stuff Bad basis.

The Dirty Vicar, Thursday, 17 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Gainsbourg has got to be one of my all time favorites (Momus is another, though he knows that already...) if you're a fan of his more pop/rock period, take Momus's suggestions, as well as the "Comic Strip" collection that was released by Mercury in the US... it's probably the easiest Serge to find in a generic record shop. it's got the whole "Initials BB" LP, "Requiem Por Un Con (probably my all time favorite Gainsbourg song) plus a few of his best Bardot and Birkin duets. LP tracks... 20 songs in all, worth it at any price.

if you're looking to delve deeper into Gainsbourg's history, pick up the "Gainsbourg Percussions" CD/LP. a great album of what's generally referred to as "exotica", ie. jungle drums, chants, and world music style rhythms... some of his best songs. the entire album save for one track is on Mercury US's "Couleur Cafe" compilation, wheich is to his exotica/latin phase as "Comic Strip" is to his pop phase. there's also "Du Jazz Dans Le Ravin" which is the bop-style jazz compilation. the 3 Mercury comps are all incredibly solid and well put together, and do serve as great introductions to the various phases in his career. unfortunately, they didn't do a reggae one. "Aux Armes De Atcetera" is the best of his reggae period. also worth mentioning id the "I Love Serge: Electronicagainsbourg" Comp that was just recently released by Mercury France... french and UK dance/electronic acts remix some of Serge's best songs, and it's actually pretty solid... the versions of the 80's songs hold up a lot better than the originals, and the mixes of the "classic" songs hold up well also. it may not be immediately satisfying, but it's enjoyable even for someone who's not familiar w/ his entire catalogue. sorry for such a long post, but as i said, he's one of my favorites, and i thought i'd pay my respects. happy hunting!

"Bonnie and Clyde" is definatly an all time favourite, I also like the 60s stuff most ("Initials B.B.", "L'herbe tendre", "Comic Strip" but also "Coleur Café") But I've only recently discovered "Aux arms et cetera" and his other reggae record from the late 70s. I have no idea why "Dirty Vicar (!?)" thinks it is that bad. There Gainsbourg worked with some of the best reggae musicians of all times, Sly and Robby, Peter Tosh etc. A friend of mine who hates reggae but loves Serge said that these are the only two reggae records he has ever enjoyed listening to in his life. On the "I love Serge"-Remix-Album which is better than you would expect is a nice version of "Lola Rastaquere" by Dzhian and Kamien - check it out!

Barbara, Thursday, 30 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Histoire de Melody Nelson is the only album of his I have and I can't imagine him having bettered it. it's also great for sample-spotting. De La Soul's "it ain't over til the fat lady..." from De La Soul is Dead nicks the crazy frenchfunkrock from track 2, and countless scoundrels have remixed and sampled the 1st and last tracks, none of whom have managed to improve it one jot. Actually, the David Holmes single "Don't die just yet" which features Mogwai and Arab Strap getting their claws into it is worth getting hold of. Also of interest are Mick Harvey's 2 albums of Serge covers (Intoxicated Man and Pink Elephants, both featuring Anita Lane as Mick's female foil), wherein the Bad Seed shows his sophisticated side by gorging on loungey versions of Gainsbourg songs. The translations are superb, (as a none-french speaker I realised I was only getting a fraction of the whole story). In fact , any succesful translation in song is a real achievement. Anyway, perhaps the best thing about Mick Harvey's Intoxicated Man collection is the way he's rescued Lemon Incest from it's awful 80's production and made into something rather beautiful, just piano and strings and mutterings. Unfortunately he looks rather like Angus Dayton on the cover.

'Love on the Beat' is indeed painful, the whole late Gainsbarre phase made for some good interviews but the music.. je crois pas. Search Jane Birkin albums, too, since he wrote the songs & shows up now & then, partic on.. what is it called.. "Raccrochez c'est un horreur" which is nothing but SG making dirty prank calls to Birkin. plus "Apocalypstick" and "L'Aquoiboniste" (I think that's the title) are really top. Are any of those songs he wrote for Adjani good?

daria gray, Saturday, 20 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

In Couler de cafe the percussion, the marracas, congos, and all sorts of things i cannot identify and then his voice too smooth , counteracted by i think birkin is so pretty and sweet and all that.

I know a bit what he made. depending on what you like, none of you will enjoy of all his albums.

Histoire de Melody Nelson has a twin: "L'homme à tête de choux". alo very good but can not be compared to the master piece "Histoire de Melody Nelson".

he made jazz in the beginning: if you are interested listen one of this two very good albums "du jazz dans le ravin" or "Gainsbourg confidentiel"

pop music: he made a pop album around 66 "Initial BB" dedicated to Brigitte Bardot. 2 or 3 incredible songs, the rest is not that interesting.

african music: "Gainsbourg Percussions" is without any doubt one of his best albums, as original as melody nelson, he made there african songs with a lot of rythm and chors;

reggae: "Aux Armes" was made with the wailers (1981). They said after that it was the best reggae album they ever made. I agree with them. listen Lola Rastaquouère.

He made a lot of different things I did not mention. But I believe these are the most interesting albums he made.

I have a request for you please. I am looking for anything that has been written about Histoire de Melody Nelson. If you have anything, can you please contact me?

I must disagree, Rock Around The Bunker is a very enjoyable record.

Omar (Omar), Thursday, 14 August 2003 06:29 (twenty-one years ago)

The Adjani material is pretty cool, but to be compared to the other stuff he wrote for the ladeez and not to his own.
There is a great collection of singles by French actresses (between 1965-1985), most of which happen to be SG tunes (eg. 'Pull Marine', 'Dieu est un Fumeur de Havanes, the BB tunes, etc.)

Fabrice (Fabfunk), Thursday, 14 August 2003 07:32 (twenty-one years ago)

"Aux Armes Et Cetera", "Melody Nelson" are also absolutely genius.

I'm not convinced by 'Aux Armes Et Cetaera'. I've only heard the title track, but it sounds like novelty reggae.

Johnny Halliday is actually Belgian.

About the dubs, I think they're old dubs. Someone I know (and into dub) said they were really good. There's also some DJ-mixes on it (patchy, was the word). I'm thinking of buying the vinyl dubversion, although the 20-page cd booklet is supposed to be great.

Here's a dumb question: How do you pronounce his first name? I always assumed it rhymed with "urge," but I met someone at a party last weekend who pronounced it "Sir-gay," and I felt like an idiot for pronouncing it wrong. But I'm not convinced he was pronouncing it right either.

Salmon Pink (Salmon Pink), Sunday, 14 March 2004 23:28 (twenty-one years ago)

It rhymes with 'urge'. Sergei is a Russian name, and it's possible Gainsbourg's Russian-born parents would have called him Sergei... if they hadn't named him Lucien.

Serge didn't make any bad music. Mauvaises nouvelles des etoiles is his least good album but even that one's not bad. It's sad to see that a lot of people don't seem to understand his 80's albums at all.

R75, Thursday, 15 April 2004 15:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Kudos to Serge for drunkenly telling Whitney Houston that he wanted to fuck her. Compared to her antics these days, that was practically suave!

'Lemon Incest' - many condemn it for its controversial lyrics; I condemn it for its terrifyingly awful '80s production.

I heard a cover version of this song playing as background music on a TV program recently. Musically much better than the original, but with completely outrageous OTT female, erm, 'vocal'. Can anyone tell me who the artist might be? Definitely 90s/00s from the production - very minimal & electronic. It's not the Intoxicated Man version, and I doubt it's the Vive le Fete cover, which is the first one google turns up.

Love on the Beat has naughty lyrics, but then so does a lot of Serge. In terms of music, though, it struck me as particularly weak.

(x post) Yeah, I have the reggae version on one of his live records, c. 1980.

I just got the French 2x DVD set mentioned above and it's tanfastic. Had this on shitty 3rd Gen VHS for a few years and now it's so great to watch Serge shave on TV in full digital crispness.

I can't stop listening to Sea, Sex & Sun. I think it's because summer is so definitely over and anything that reminds me of hot weather is good. My other favourite is L'Anamour, which I first heard through a tape tree several years ago. God bless tape trees.

Madchen (Madchen), Thursday, 16 September 2004 11:18 (twenty years ago)

Sea Sex & Sun is a great lost single. The English version makes me wish Serge did more English tracks. I think I might be better off learning French though.

My other favorite Serge single from the reggae period is "My Lady Heroine" - which is a groovy doo wop/rock number that would've fit well on "Rock Around The Bunker".

Okay, so I just went on vacation to France. I thought I'd buy some "French music" at the Virgin Megastore..I got:

Francoise Hardy - La Question (great)
Magma - Mekanik Destrucksdfsdkomandod (whatever you know what i'm talking abotu - bananas!)

AND:

Serge Gainsbourg - Le Zenith de Gainsbourg

HOLY SHIT THIS ALBUM SUCKS! Almost in a funny Lou Reed "Take No Prisoners Live" way but not quite...it's like from 89 and the band sounds like a Phil Collins touring band from the period.....All the songs, arrangements are butchered (at least based on the vers. of Bonnie and Clyde the only other song by him I've heard in its original version)....

The first song, "You're Under Arrest" features these old-school style rappers going "You're under arrest, cuz YOUR THE BEST...Slippidy slam a bo bim bam GAINSBOURG!" over and over and over and over for like 5 minutes....

It's pretty boring overall, but the song "Harley David Son of a Bitch" has the most bonkers DRUM SOLO! At first it's all super noise gate/hybrid electronic 80s kit stuff...boom boom crackity CRACK! type stuff...but then the drummer starts using a drum pad to trigger women orgasm sounds and working that into the solo (kinda like Me So Horny type deal)...Gainsbourg is kind of muttering (what sound to my non-French speaking ears) as lewd comments..."That's what SHE said" kinda stuff...the crowd is reacting to what he's saying...

Anyway, I though Le Zenith de Gainsbourg was French for "The Best of Gainsbourg" and it was "Nice Price" so I figured it must be like the standard cheapie greatest hits, good intro to his work, blah blah....I should'a got the one with the young chick and the teddy bear I guess....

Anyone else heard this?

I used to have the video of "Zenith". He hadn't played live for more than 20 years, I believe, and had had some big hit albums, so he did this populist live show with session musicians, and it was indeed awful. He's so drunk that he can't even light a cigarette without burning his fingers.

Momus (Momus), Friday, 23 September 2005 05:42 (nineteen years ago)

No, he started playing live again after "Aux Armes Et Cetera" (excepting a couple of one-off appearances in the mid-70's, IIRC), and continued to perform regularly during the 80's. At the time of "Zenith" (which I haven't heard) he was simply drunk all of the time.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Friday, 23 September 2005 06:05 (nineteen years ago)

And are there english translations of his lyrics anywhere?

You might want to try Mick Harvey's English-language Gainsbourg cover albums, Intoxicated Man and Pink Elephants. Not quite as revelatory as, say, Scott Walker's English Jacques Brel covers, maybe due to Gainsbourg's higher profile and the fact that he's equally known as a performer, not just a songwriter, but still worth listening to.

Oh, and the new Monsieur Gainsbourg Revisited comp put out by Les Inrockuptibles. Haven't had a chance to listen to it yet (still on my slsk wishlist), but there are some promising names (Jarvis Cocker, Portishead, Franz Ferdinand, Marc Almond) in with the crap (Michael Goddamn Stipe, Placebo, The Kills, another with Brian Molko). And the Cat Power & Karen Elson version of "Je t'aime (Moi non Plus)" is good enough.

It's excellent - I was really fascinated, watching him turn from scared, trembling poet to cultural terrorist. The early footage before he started chainsmoking is really nice. And there's lots of interviews too. He struck me as a really miserable guy.

oscar, Wednesday, 13 February 2008 22:42 (seventeen years ago)

OK, now that you've had a week with it, how accurate is this Aquarius review?

If you have any way to listen to vinyl, you should definitely buy this, like right now! Very few items in our store require such minimal convincing that they are absolutely essential, as we've seen this flying off of our shelves as soon as we got them. What more could you want to know: Serge Gainsbourg! Psychedelic Years! Double vinyl! Totally Affordable!
Ok, Ok, some of you need some further convincing. Probably some of you have some Serge in your collections and want to know what exactly is on here, and it's good to know because it's not really that obvious. The title says "Psychedelic Years", but this isn't a greatest hits collection, and probably only a couple of songs will be familiar to casual Gainsbourg fans ("Bonnie and Clyde" and "En Melody" from Melody Nelson). The bulk of the tracks are from French films and TV soundtracks between 1966-1971 and are arranged by either Jean-Claude Vannier (Histoire de Melody Nelson) or Michel Columbier (Initials B.B.), two of Gainsbourg's greatest collaborators. Each providing smoky and stony grooves, some with sexy femme backing vocals, for such films as Cannabis, Anna, Le Pacha, Vidocq, Manon 70, Ce Sacre Grand-Pere, La Horse, Mister Feedom and Si J'etasi Un Espion. Three tracks even contain bonus beats for you record heads. There is not one bad cut on here. So don't miss out as we're not sure how long this will be available. Did we say that THIS IS ABSOLUTELY ESSENTIAL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm tempted to pick it up, as I don't actually own any Serge (I just have loads of mp3s), and the 2xLP vinyl is attractive.

Z S, Tuesday, 26 February 2008 04:46 (seventeen years ago)

Aquarius reviews are rarely accurate. That being said, the replay value on these LP's ultimately has to do with your taste. If the idea of Serge in a more stoned-out cinematic mode, loads of Franco instrumental breaks, weird quirky sound collages and brilliant arrangements ala Vannier is your thing, you should pick this up immediately. Also, the price is hard to beat. I thought many of the tracks I would have already heard before, but many of these are pretty hard to find. Also, the production on many if not all the tracks is crisp, and well honed, perfectly built for vinyl imo.

oscar, Tuesday, 26 February 2008 05:02 (seventeen years ago)

stoned-out cinematic mode, loads of Franco instrumental breaks, weird quirky sound collages and brilliant arrangements ala Vannier

Sold! ;)

If I had to choose, I'd say my favorite Serge tracks are probably "Initials B.B.", "69 Annee Erotique", tracks that roughly fit your description above. Thanks for the advice.

A few questions:

Does anyone know if it's still possible to find the Annees Psychedeliques comp on cd anywhere? It looks like a really well-selected tracklisting, with a lot of stuff unavailable digitally outside of huge box sets stuffed with material I already have.

Also a couple of questions about the Melody Nelson reissue that Pitchfork's review didn't really address: Light in the Attic apparently remastered it from the original tapes; does it sound any better? And are the new liner notes (by Andy Votel if I remember correctly) any good? He seems like someone who'd have some interesting takes on the material, historical info, etc- after all, he's one of the guys responsible for the stellar Vannier release on Finders Keepers- but I have no idea if he does so here. My French copy is pretty beat up, and I'm a sucker for a nicely done reissue, but Pitchfork didn't exactly help.

Not that it was a terrible review or anything (though it may be the easiest rating ever), but it didn't really talk about the reissue aspect at all beyond "hooray, this classic album is available again."

Telephone thing, Thursday, 26 March 2009 16:18 (sixteen years ago)

Oh, and it's kind of sad LitA couldn't put it out with a dvd of the videos, but I wouldn't be surprised I'd there were additional rights issues there.

Telephone thing, Thursday, 26 March 2009 16:21 (sixteen years ago)

wrt Annees Psychedeliques: seems most of the stuff on this are soundtrack pieces, no? You could get the complete Gainsbourg in films box for pretty cheap I think.

baaderonixx, Thursday, 26 March 2009 16:39 (sixteen years ago)

Yeah I was a bit disappointed with Annees Psychedeliques because there were so many soundtrack instrumentals and very little groovy French perving.

I got the new Histoire de Melody Nelson LP in the mail today. Very high quality all around. It was a little expensive - I think it was $18 + $8 shipping (!!) - for a 27-28 minute record, but the packaging is nice, there's a nice little essay by Andy Beta, the vinyl is thick and it sounds good even on my mediocre speakers, and you get a Light in the Attic Zine which is actually pretty good!

Also, it was interesting to read through the lyrics, which are presented in both French and English. I've never read a translation of his lyrics before. I always assumed his lyrics would be match his horndog voice, but a surprisingly small portion of it deals with actually doing it.

Though as gr8080 points out the (two? iirc) reggae albums are also essential.
