New album All Kinds of You is pretty good

What do you think?

I can see some people saying it's pretty derivative, and offers nothing new, but I'm a huge fan of this type of sound, so ya.

, Wednesday, 30 April 2014 22:55 (eleven years ago)

He's on Spotify

, Wednesday, 30 April 2014 23:02 (eleven years ago)

We've discussed him some on this thread-
Revolt of the ILX Brigade: New Post-Fahey Folk For PPL that post in the Takoma & Tompkin's Square Threads

ian, Wednesday, 30 April 2014 23:08 (eleven years ago)

crap, sorry. when i searched i didn't include posts, just thread titles. you can delete or close this

, Wednesday, 30 April 2014 23:09 (eleven years ago)

well, i don't see the need for that! maybe people will enjoy him having a thread of his own. don't worry.

ian, Wednesday, 30 April 2014 23:14 (eleven years ago)

Awesome. I just read that he was touring with Cloud Nothings? Why do a lot of different bands and musicians I like end up playing with each other somehow even though they have different tastes. It happens a lot to me.

, Wednesday, 30 April 2014 23:18 (eleven years ago)

Different sounds*

, Wednesday, 30 April 2014 23:19 (eleven years ago)

he's good! easy to point out the influences, but i don't know, he does the style really well. and he's a hell of a guitarist.
i like that there's a less wispy approach to this genre, which is what most of the Nick Drake acolytes from the last decade or so have latched on to.

tylerw, Thursday, 1 May 2014 01:56 (eleven years ago)

one year passes...

the Tim Buckley influence here is enormous.

charlie h, Thursday, 7 May 2015 11:55 (ten years ago)

specifically, i'm referring to what i've heard of Primrose Green.

charlie h, Thursday, 7 May 2015 11:56 (ten years ago)

Kinda surprised more people aren't talking about this album. It's great. Definitely check him out live. His band is fantastic. Closest I can imagine to seeing Tim Buckley circa Happy Sad.

john. a resident of chicago., Thursday, 7 May 2015 12:36 (ten years ago)

The 1968 Buckleyisms were what put me off this record: it seemed so derivative it was almost pastiche.

Unsettled defender (ithappens), Thursday, 7 May 2015 13:37 (ten years ago)

I guess not being super familiar with Buckley helps, as that doesn't bother me at all. I absolutely love this record. More than anything else, I was picking up a John Martyn vibe.

soaring skrrrtpeggios (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Thursday, 7 May 2015 15:15 (ten years ago)

yeah i get more of a Martyn thing from the vocals (though Buckley is certainly in the mix). pastiche complaints are valid, but i just enjoy it regardless.

Agreed about this, I think it's a great record and that the backing band is hot shit. The Buckley vibe doesn't bother me in the least. I also hear a bit of Nick Drake in parts. I'm seeing him at Solid Sound this year. I sincerely hope he has his band with him, but I doubt it.

kwhitehead, Thursday, 7 May 2015 17:54 (ten years ago)

the hot shit drummer is my teacher!! he's awesome. apparently they only had one rehearsal the day before they recorded the album? i had no idea he was on it until for some reason i looked him up to see what he was up to and saw he was playing with RW and then i read this

I've already said it in two other threads but yeah I fucking love this album

moans and feedback (Dinsdale), Thursday, 7 May 2015 18:21 (ten years ago)

Yeah really like it, need to get a physical copy.
Do like the mix of influences.
Incidentally just noticed earlier this week that Terry Reid's River is in his Original Album series 5cd set. Think that lp would fit in with the Buckley, Martyn and Drake already mentioned. As would Van Morrison around Moondance/Veedon Fleece.

Stevolende, Thursday, 7 May 2015 18:27 (ten years ago)

overall, i'm really warming to this album. some of the arrangements are terrific, and i actually think that the spectrum of artists he is choosing to draw influence from is quite refreshing. in addition to the loose, windy Buckley-isms, i'm hearing Bert Jansch in the vocal delivery, which is appealing. and yeah, plenty of John Martyn, definitely.

charlie h, Friday, 8 May 2015 05:08 (ten years ago)

in fact, the first thing that the album title reminded me of -- before i'd heard a note of the music -- was Jansch's Rosemary Lane.

charlie h, Friday, 8 May 2015 05:19 (ten years ago)

also just realised that there's a p4k review for this album that completely misses the point.

for a moment i thought you meant they were ilx'ers

F♯ A♯ (∞), Friday, 8 May 2015 19:04 (ten years ago)

No, probably just that they're not quite as unsung as they were. Not sure how well known they would be still. Do know that there is a Riley Walker track on the Paul Weller chosen tracklisting for the current Mojo cd Beyond Saturn.
I'm still not sure how well known anything would be. I don't frequent coffee shops or anything so not sure how likely they would be to be onplaylists for things like that if taht would actually be widespread in itself. Also don't listen to radio.

I still don't really know how recognised pretty much anything would be. Like is Jeff Buckley really widely known by the general public, not just people who actually seek out music. or how well known somebody like Nick Cave would be, or Paul Weller since its his mix on that cd I mentioned. I guess the Jam would be pretty well known but is that only by people of a certain age who still care about music and is that itself marginalised?

Anyway do like taht record.

I've been in the 'definitely hugely talented but needs to get some stuff out of his system' camp for a while. Good to hear him try some different things on the new album, but while Bert Jansch's lawyers can stand down, big Jim O'Rourke's lawyers' might be taking notice...

tylerw, Thursday, 18 August 2016 16:22 (nine years ago)

Digging these new Ryley tracks. Not hearing enough O'Rourke biting to be bothered by it, and anyway I like Ryley's new tracks better than O'Rourke's last album hah hah.

Sunn O))) Brother Where Art Thou? (Chinaski), Monday, 29 August 2016 19:37 (nine years ago)

Listening to "Golden Sings" now and I'm not familiar with any of the artist he's been compared to (aside from Nick Drake). I really like this new album, how it combines the feel of the folk singer-songwriter with some different sounds like the zither. It starts with a bang with "The Halfwit In Me" and grabs me by the collar with "The Roundabout", but the ending "Age Old Tale" has this Fairport Convention-meets-American Music Club vibe that's a total winner.

Gerald McBoing-Boing, Wednesday, 31 August 2016 19:56 (nine years ago)

seeing walker tonight tape a radio show in boulder -- wish it was a full set, but I'll take what i can get ... new one is definitely growing on me overall. fairport-meets-american music club is a good description ...

I haven't listened to the new one, but I like him a lot and he is great live. The last time I saw him prompted a little concern -- he sounded great but he looked pretty raw, red-rimmed eyes and a general sense of hard living. Some friends of mine ran into him on the street a few hours later and told him how much they liked the set; he said thanks and asked if they wanted to come "do some drugs" with him. (They declined.) So, hope he's keeping himself ok!

The newest one hasn't totally clicked for me but I assume it will in time, the last one was the best (Golden Sings.... So yeah, saw him Friday night with Trad Gras och Stenar and Endless Boogie (both very great) as openers. He's got an extremely good band together backing and each individual song performance was pretty sharp, understated but not inaudible singing, good sense of ensemble performances all around -- my friend Paul and I traded thoughts back and forth, he mentioned Prefab Sprout, John Martyn and Jeff Buckley, I was thinking of late 90s indie-goes-prog in turn. His loud and exuberant-but-verging-on-obnoxious between song stuff, well, maybe I need to be his age or something. (That said, as I told Paul, we're not talking 90s/00s Anton from Brian Jonestown Massacre here.)

Also he just announced a full cover album of Dave Matthews Band's The Lillywhite Sessions. Whatever works for ya.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 25 September 2018 17:25 (seven years ago)

i mean, I Was A Teenage DMB Fan. i've since realized most of the music is not very good at all! but something about the lillywhite sessions still fascinates, in that 1) matthews shelved it bc it was too dour and ended up recording a shitty happy album in like nine days with glen ballard and he put that out instead 2) its dourness means there's a lot less dumbassery than on your typical dmb album, and the melodies are for the most part really gorgeous. walker's rearrangements are both really radical and yet true to the original songs. it's very very very jazzy

princess of hell (BradNelson), Tuesday, 25 September 2018 17:42 (seven years ago)

i've never heard the DMB album he is covering (i hate the DMB, they are so bad and hated), but Ryley's version is pretty OK. a weird thing to do for sure, but oh well!

Glad to see he's in a much better place, I had no idea how dark of a place he had gotten too. Just goes to show you how insidious depressing and addition can be. You'd think opening for a guy like Richard Thompson would be a highlight for a guy like Ryley, but he was suffering so much.

There doesn't seem to be a lot of love for them on ilx, but his set with Garcia Peoples backing him up on the Rocks Off Concert Cruise was great.

he's really changed, i think there are things to recommend from every era, but yeah started out as extremely earnest Bert Jansch/Pentangle worship then gradually starts getting weirder and incorporating more mid 90s post rock type vibes and jazzy feels (john martyn influence maybe?)

Post Wook is really great. Have been dipping into his back catalog stuff I haven't heard and it's so diverse. He has a really creative and ambitious musical mind, that takes him in pretty different directions from a lot of his brethren in the post-Faheyverse. Going back to his older stylez search also SpiderBeetleBee w Bill MacKay
