new single: https://soundcloud.com/msmsmsm/sophie-lemonade

it is fine and maybe more instantly memorable than some of his others but idk i'm not that into it

dyl, Tuesday, 29 July 2014 04:26 (eleven years ago)

also it's not even 2 minutes wtf, i was hoping it was going to go somewhere @ the end

dyl, Tuesday, 29 July 2014 04:26 (eleven years ago)

Brief but good I'd say.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 29 July 2014 04:34 (eleven years ago)

Since bipp i haven't been impressed by his stuff, at all. however i can't get enough of bipp and i'm still anxiously waiting for the album to come out.

This is pretty hacky.

omg this is waaay better (than lemonade)

dyl, Wednesday, 6 August 2014 00:11 (eleven years ago)

when people say they really love "nothing more to say", do they actually mean the song "nothing more to say" or the youtube mashup of "nothing more to say / eeehhh" which i can't seem to find a purchasable mp3 of? (and which sounds different to the individual "nothing more to say" and "eeehhh" tracks?)

uxorious gazumping (monotony), Wednesday, 6 August 2014 01:26 (eleven years ago)

That mashup was by Sophie, and was meant to be put up for free download on Annie Mac's soundcloud page:
https://soundcloud.com/annie-mac-presents/free-music-monday-sophie
Personally I prefer it to either track on their own.

Now a nice repayment would be if someone happened to have a rip of the Just Jam set / "Hey QT" lying around. Apparently it's a collab with A.G. Cook and based on the obvious PC Music influence on these new Sophie tracks a teamup between the two of them should go heavenly.

Champiness, Wednesday, 6 August 2014 04:52 (eleven years ago)

Personally I prefer it to either track on their own.

So do I, which is why I'm wondering whether that's the track people are talking about when they profess their love for "Nothing More To Say".

It's not just a sandwiching together of the two songs - I think the frequency and bpm is slightly different too.

uxorious gazumping (monotony), Wednesday, 6 August 2014 06:05 (eleven years ago)

I'm pretty sure people mean the widely-available original rather than the hard-to-find mashup. The original Nothing More To Say is his best track IMO. Not heard any of the recent ones though.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 6 August 2014 09:03 (eleven years ago)

I'm pretty sure people mean the widely-available original rather than the hard-to-find mashup

The mashup has nearly 50k plays on youtube / 126k plays on soundcloud and was featured on Pitchfork. If anything I'd say it's the other way around.

uxorious gazumping (monotony), Wednesday, 6 August 2014 13:01 (eleven years ago)

both new tracks are horrible

lex pretend, Thursday, 7 August 2014 11:27 (eleven years ago)

Agreed. These will clear many dance floors.

dan138zig (Durrr Durrr Durrrrrr), Thursday, 7 August 2014 22:42 (eleven years ago)

Love the idea more than the execution. The whole thing is starting to remind me of Nadia Oh done joylessly.

boxedjoy, Friday, 8 August 2014 07:16 (eleven years ago)

So the Hey QT rollout has apparently begun officially:
https://soundcloud.com/pcmus/drinkqt/
Complete with a typical PC Music web 3.0 page accomapniment:
http://WWW.DRINKQT.COM/
...and a Boiler Room livestream at a party to celebrate the new Hudson Mohawke EP:
http://boilerroom.tv/session/ray-ban-005/
I'll be happy to finally get some officially-sanctioned set footage, regardless of any new material that's played.

belatedly listening to lemonade for the first time. it could actually be really good if it stuck to the hyper-sacharine-delirium-pop segment and got rid of the rest. but otherwise, its just a very weird throwaway. keep thinking there must be a better edit of it somewhere and that this is just a (terrible) teaser. hard is a tiny bit better though the vocals are still on a ting tings level of irritation and it just seems like someone is trying too hard/thinking theyre being hilariously challenging. reminds me a bit of raffertie.

nxd, Tuesday, 26 August 2014 16:19 (eleven years ago)

So for those of you who missed it the Boiler Room stream was a lot of fun (excluding the long gaps where setup for the next act took too long and we were stuck with a minimal dj / random shots of the club accompanied by downtempo music). The "Sophie" performance featured some muscular girl up at the decks playing new tunes while the genuine article flitted about dressed as a security guard; the new stuff was pretty great, generally really uptempo (though I suppose he wouldn't unveil the downtempo stuff at a club gig). Also none of them ran under 2 minutes. :)
I've excerpted a few of my faves:
http://www46.zippyshare.com/v/27521424/file.html
http://www46.zippyshare.com/v/69964662/file.html
http://www55.zippyshare.com/v/9516052/file.html

The QT segment of the show was basically an in-club ad for the "energy elixir" (played over the speakers while she sat on a couch reading a magazine) followed by "Hey QT" - interestingly she seemed to be singing along even though her mic wasn't turned on. I've got that audio too:
http://www46.zippyshare.com/v/31601250/file.html

Champiness, Wednesday, 27 August 2014 23:21 (eleven years ago)

Is the 'Get the the club at 2am / I'm gonna bang loads of men' track one of those? That was incredible.

Basically / I Don't Wanna Be / An mp3 / 3-2-0 kb / ps (Craigo Boingo), Wednesday, 27 August 2014 23:34 (eleven years ago)

No, that's a different one - a remix of GFOTY's "Friday Night", the original of which I absolutely love:

Managed to snag a video of her Teragram show before it got flagged on Youtube, and suffice to say if she has an album on the way t' the material is there for it to be a killer.
Also her live thing is coming to NYC in Februrary 2018, which will probably have even more new stuff on the setlist:
https://www.eventbrite.com/e/sophie-elsewhere-hall-tickets-41120273846?_eboga=112619228.1512754472

I saw her live on Friday night and it was pretty mediocre - a trance breakdown that went nowhere for a good ten mins and then some bouncing David Guetta nonsense that used interesting sound design to disguise a lack of innovation

as far as the 'heavier' tracks go i love the sound design on them but grooves they settle into don't do much for me? maybe I'd like them more with less of the vocals on Faceshopping and Ponyboy?

Immaterial is my favourite thing she's done since Bipp and the whole sequence from Is It Cold In The Water? to it is fantastic.

I basically agree with ufo here, those two tracks outstay their welcome a bit, the rest of the album is really great though and I say that as a PC Music non-fan (this is the first thing I've liked by SOPHIE since 'Nothing More to Say').

OIL OF EVERY PEARL'S UN-INSIDES is everything i've ever wanted from an electronic record, personally. it feels utilitarian, purposeful but maintains fun and danceable. it's SOPHIE's eyes of the world; sonically it's genderfluid, dysphoric, but encapsulates more -- transhumanism, intrapersonal technology and sexuality... and it remains succinct throughout, never self-indulgent... SOPHIE is the pop star we needed!

love how Infatuation takes the vocals from Is It Cold in the Water and backwards masks them into infinity - beautiful pair of songs, the latter builds and never really takes off and the former drops in beats but still feels like it never really drops - a master class in ratcheting up tension

I wasn't intimately familiar with her work, but "Faceshopping" (song/video) was one of the most provocative things I'd encountered in pop in a long time. Seems like an important artist, terribly young to go.

eatandoph (Neue Jesse Schule), Saturday, 30 January 2021 16:24 (four years ago)

I knew BIPP from our own poll a few years ago, but that's really the extent of it. This put the loss in a greater context for me.

If you don’t know the music and need a comparison Sophie had a Dilla like impact on that scene which will be felt for decades

I came across this spotify playlist entitled "every SOPHIE produced song on this damn site'

Fetchboy, Saturday, 30 January 2021 17:43 (four years ago)

This is so sad. Pretty much my favourite producer of the 10s, and a genuinely exceptional performer.

The show at Heaven from just before the album (of which there are excerpts on Youtube) was thrilling. Not just the spectacle and fierce performance, but the atmosphere in the room was one of sheer joy. What SOPHIE represented for everyone there, in terms of owning their identity, made it such a celebratory night and the mixture of ecstatic pogoing and vogueing triggered by 'Immaterial' was something I'll always remember.

Outside of the playlist Fetchboy just linked, there's an incredible amount of unreleased and leaked material floating around. These are some of my favourites:

Ooh - this pre-dates or is of the same era as Bipp, you can hear the echoes throughout:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tKiX91tZv50

Psalms (with fka Twigs) - this was leaked this year though must date from earlier, it was nommed in this year's tracks poll but as it isn't on Spotify I guess most people missed it:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0sGu4yb_R_o

Banoffee - Count On You - not a leak or unreleased, but I don't think it's widely known that this is a SOPHIE co-production, just a really pretty song and the one I've been listening to most today:

Astonishing sounds and delicious melodies, what a bright streak in the heavens, what a beacon. I’m sad for her and sad for us that we missed what’s next, and what’s ten steps down the road. She made pop new for me again.

Oh! It’s THIS SOPHIE. :( I overheard some girls earlier in the supermarket talking about how an artist called Sophie died in an accident and I didn’t connect who they were talking about. This sucks.

she should've seen the day she would be talked about in all of the supermarkets.

here's a bunch of unreleased tracks & rarities

ufo, Sunday, 31 January 2021 07:57 (four years ago)

I had never really understood her music-- just felt like it wasn't my thing. Yesterday I listened to a bunch of her songs, and felt profound grief that I'd somehow missed something before, and that I wouldn't be able to enjoy more in the future. Then, last night, I had a lucid dream where I was a helper to a neuroatypical adult who was trying to communicate with their friend, another neuroatypical adult, through a Plexiglas screen, and the both of them were crying because they couldn't communicate properly, then 'Its Okay to Cry' started playing in the dream and I woke up sobbing.

Something in the air. Horrible news.

Truly horrible news. She was in my dreams last night too.

Those Vince Staples anecdotes were a help. Thanks for the heads up.

Great thoughts Ned, and loved the quote you singled out, the desire "to make the brightest, most intense, engaging thing." It started me thinking who else was doing that and the most obvious answer (apart from AG Cook of course) was Yasutaka Nakata (Perfume, Capsule, Kyary Pamyu Pamyu etc.). Does anyone know if SOPHIE and Nakata interacted? I was thrilled when Autechre did the first ever SOPHIE remix.
Also apologies for my use of "her" to refer to the artist upthread, I learned from Philip Sherburne's brilliant p4k piece that SOPHIE disliked both gendered and nonbinary pronouns. https://pitchfork.com/thepitch/remembering-sophies-radical-futurism/

wow, that pic! i was living in Nagoya in 2010 and made to see Capsule play a live show in Osaka back then. so glad i did. i never imagined a SOPHIE - Capsule connection. and i wondered what the hell happened to Capsule... now i know.

thank u Ned for that writing. i'd never seen the video, it made me cry and that's ok :)))

posthumous album coming 27/9, it's supposed to be an album she was almost finished with at the time of her death. i don't really love this track - it doesn't quite hit the way it needs to? - but i'm looking forward to the rest of it. i think a lot of that material is already floating around online from her live sets but i haven't listened to it in ages

(applies to pretty much everything with Kim Petras)

Murgatroid, Tuesday, 25 June 2024 02:21 (one year ago)

the track on brat about SOPHIE is really touching and human. this line in particular:

Your sounds, your words live on, endless
When I make songs, I remember
Things you'd suggest, "Make it faster"
Would you like this one? (Maybe just a little bit?)
