http://www.revolvermag.com/news/whats-the-best-album-from-1994.html#pd_a_8062814

In the April/May 2014 issue of Revolver, we celebrate the 20th anniversary of the heaviest album to debut at No. 1, Pantera’s Far Beyond Driven. But many other landmark hard-rock and metal releases have turned or are turning 20 this year, including albums from Soundgarden, Slayer, Korn, Marilyn Manson, Megadeth, Machine Head, Cannibal Corpse, So we’re asking you, the fans: What do you think is the best album from 1994? Let us know.

We included the list (mostly) and added a few we thought were essential until we ran out of room. If something is missing - sorry!

ps Adrien removed NIN,Soundgarden and I removed AIC.

Kyuss for me.

۩, Wednesday, 21 May 2014 18:22 (twelve years ago)

Emperor gets my vote, but narrowly ahead of Tiamat, Amorphis, Bolt Thrower, Mayhem and Cannibal Corpse. What a crazily good year for metal.

Toss-up for me between The Obsessed and Godflesh (not their best album—that would be Pure—but their last great one).

Humorist (horse) (誤訳侮辱), Wednesday, 21 May 2014 18:31 (twelve years ago)

funnily enough I think Pure is their best too

۩, Wednesday, 21 May 2014 19:10 (twelve years ago)

hard to look at a list with vikingligr veldi on it and not vote for it

emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Wednesday, 21 May 2014 20:22 (twelve years ago)

and yet

emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Wednesday, 21 May 2014 20:22 (twelve years ago)

Since adrien removed the corny indie fuxxor choices im not sure what will win

۩, Wednesday, 21 May 2014 20:25 (twelve years ago)

I can imagine every album getting a vote

۩, Wednesday, 21 May 2014 20:25 (twelve years ago)

Prong seems to be winning the revolver vote just now which is surprising but I approve

۩, Wednesday, 21 May 2014 20:26 (twelve years ago)

plenty of ilxors like "corny indie" and Transilvanian Hunger iirc

sarahell, Wednesday, 21 May 2014 20:27 (twelve years ago)

Nine Inch Nails and Soundgarden are not metal. I'd even argue Marilyn Manson and Helmet, but I was feeling benevolent.

A. Begrand, Wednesday, 21 May 2014 20:30 (twelve years ago)

If badmotorfinger or the albums before had been in it i'd argue but I agree with Adrien that superunknown, as great as it is, isnt metal.

۩, Wednesday, 21 May 2014 20:31 (twelve years ago)

dammit I forgot Fudge Tunnel

۩, Wednesday, 21 May 2014 20:43 (twelve years ago)

tough one, but it's Mayhem for me. it was my real entry point to the non-symphonic black metal, and I still dig the shit out of it no matter how many times I played.

tho the Acid Bath was a close second

getting strange ass all around the globe (Neanderthal), Wednesday, 21 May 2014 20:47 (twelve years ago)

also that Slayer album is criminally underrated

getting strange ass all around the globe (Neanderthal), Wednesday, 21 May 2014 20:49 (twelve years ago)

I thought you would be a cannibal corpse voter for sure.

۩, Wednesday, 21 May 2014 21:18 (twelve years ago)

Hard not to vote Nightside. That and Prometheus were actually the first metal albums I ever owned, disregarding nü.

jmm, Wednesday, 21 May 2014 21:25 (twelve years ago)

I should have included Biohazard for rocky and Sean

۩, Wednesday, 21 May 2014 22:17 (twelve years ago)

So am I supposed to look at this list how I would have back in 94? Or how I see the albums now?
In 94 for me it would have been a toss up between CC, Pantera, or Slayer.

I came to love quite a few albums on this list later on, but was unaware of them back in 94.

Rocky (ku4u1u), Wednesday, 21 May 2014 22:50 (twelve years ago)

I only like maybe four of these. No wonder I ditched metal in that era.

Voted for The Obsessed.

EZ Snappin, Wednesday, 21 May 2014 22:51 (twelve years ago)

"snogging" is a pretty awful term. thankfully i've only ever heard it used in the UK and in movies featuring Hugh Grant

charlie h, Wednesday, 21 May 2014 22:53 (twelve years ago)

Also, Napalm Death - Fear, Emptiness, Despair is missing from this list. WTF?

Rocky (ku4u1u), Wednesday, 21 May 2014 22:53 (twelve years ago)

ignore the x-post. wrong thread. happens occasionally when i'm on here and should be engaged in work.

i'm going with Emperor

charlie h, Wednesday, 21 May 2014 22:58 (twelve years ago)

lol charlie

۩, Wednesday, 21 May 2014 22:59 (twelve years ago)

rocky you can go with 1994 you or 2014 you it doesnt matter

۩, Wednesday, 21 May 2014 22:59 (twelve years ago)

My favorite of these is Gorgoroth - Pentagram, but yeah, looks like for black metal anyway 1994 was a great year!

Dominique, Wednesday, 21 May 2014 23:01 (twelve years ago)

Seems appropriate for this thread: http://www.laweekly.com/westcoastsound/2014/05/21/10-reasons-why-1994-was-the-best-year-for-music?showFullText=true

۩, Thursday, 22 May 2014 11:25 (twelve years ago)

fair number here i don't really know or have straight-up never heard, but as a true & dedicated, card-carrying, eyeball-tatted indie fuxxor, i support:

Acid Bath - When the Kite String Pops
Amorphis - Tales From the Thousand Lakes
Bolt Thrower - ...For Victory
nazi fuckhead sings
Darkthrone - Transilvanian Hunger
Emperor - In the Nightside Eclipse
Enslaved - Frost & Vikingligr veldi
Harvey Milk - My Love Is Higher Than Your Assessment of What My Love Could Be
Kyuss - Welcome to Sky Valley
Mayhem - De mysteriis dom Sathanas
Melvins - Stoner Witch
Slayer - Divine Intervention
The Obsessed - The Church Within

i certify that this is a professionally-vetted indie fuxxor list bearing official embossage with requisite watermarking. in accordance with the strictures of my guild, i must vote for darkthrone.

katsu kittens (contenderizer), Thursday, 22 May 2014 11:44 (twelve years ago)

Voted Emperor

My corny indie Top 5:

1. Darkthrone
2. Mayhem
3. Kyuss
4. Gorgoroth (only heard this one very recently)
5. Emperor

So many bands with their career best in this year.

Siegbran, Friday, 23 May 2014 12:08 (eleven years ago)

man i used to love that Amorphis album back in the day

charlie h, Friday, 23 May 2014 12:16 (eleven years ago)

who did you vote for?

۩, Friday, 23 May 2014 12:26 (eleven years ago)

Emperor!

charlie h, Friday, 23 May 2014 12:34 (eleven years ago)

i guess Darkthrone, Burzum, Harvey Milk, even Painkiller were in contention though.

charlie h, Friday, 23 May 2014 12:36 (eleven years ago)

my heart says Darkthrone, but the part of me that wants to distinguish itself from everybody else says Suicidal Tendencies (lol) or Cradle of Filth (jk)

endzone selfie (bernard snowy), Friday, 23 May 2014 12:42 (eleven years ago)

... factor in that I prefer Funeral Moon to Transilvanian Hunger, & I give up and walk away from thread

endzone selfie (bernard snowy), Friday, 23 May 2014 12:43 (eleven years ago)

I remember everyone who loved the first 3 Danzig albums was gutted with Danzig 4 but nowadays cuz everything after was so bad its now seen as one of his solo career highlights.

۩, Friday, 23 May 2014 12:45 (eleven years ago)

bernard you know you want to vote

۩, Friday, 23 May 2014 12:45 (eleven years ago)

ehh

endzone selfie (bernard snowy), Friday, 23 May 2014 12:47 (eleven years ago)

maybe I will download that Korn album and see if it's good enough to provide a basis for challops

endzone selfie (bernard snowy), Friday, 23 May 2014 12:48 (eleven years ago)

Darkthrone edging out Kyuss. Yes I'm corny too.

Angkor Waht (Neil S), Friday, 23 May 2014 12:49 (eleven years ago)

Its ILM, I expect Korn to win

۩, Friday, 23 May 2014 12:49 (eleven years ago)

loads of great records here though, if only I'd known about half of them at the time

Angkor Waht (Neil S), Friday, 23 May 2014 12:53 (eleven years ago)

NIN would have won this if adrien hadn't removed it, right?

۩, Friday, 23 May 2014 12:54 (eleven years ago)

HELL NO

katsu kittens (contenderizer), Friday, 23 May 2014 12:55 (eleven years ago)

I think it would have. Between it and Soundgarden anyway. The non-metal lurker vote often triumphs

۩, Friday, 23 May 2014 13:01 (eleven years ago)

who's going to vote for Dream Theater?

charlie h, Friday, 23 May 2014 13:04 (eleven years ago)

I heard Downward Spiral for the first time earlier this year, and got REALLY into it. like, listening-several-times-a-day-for-a-month, taking-walks-at-night-just-for-an-excuse-to-hear-it-again level obsession

endzone selfie (bernard snowy), Friday, 23 May 2014 13:06 (eleven years ago)

ha Downward Spiral was one of the few albums amongst these that i knew at the time.

charlie h, Friday, 23 May 2014 13:08 (eleven years ago)

I knew "Closer" from radio play... I was 7 in 1994 :|

endzone selfie (bernard snowy), Friday, 23 May 2014 13:09 (eleven years ago)

what a fucking ridiculously great list. some absolutely killer records get easily lost among the obvious highlights - solitude aeternus is great, tales from the thousand lakes is great, stream from the heavens is incredible. both those enslaved records are worth consideration imo. non serviam deserves love. fuckin', Time is a good Fate album, side 1 is especially great; probably the album I listen to most of anything here.

but transilvanian hunger though.

Now I Am Become Dracula (underrated aerosmith bootlegs I have owned), Friday, 23 May 2014 13:14 (eleven years ago)

i was 12. not too young for NIN, Pantera, Helmet, and Slayer apparently.

charlie h, Friday, 23 May 2014 13:14 (eleven years ago)

mortal throne of nazarene is also tops

Now I Am Become Dracula (underrated aerosmith bootlegs I have owned), Friday, 23 May 2014 13:15 (eleven years ago)

listened to the dogshit outta melvins & kyuss - prong, helmet & slayer less so. the rest crept in later.

not saying the downward spiral isn't a good album...

katsu kittens (contenderizer), Friday, 23 May 2014 13:16 (eleven years ago)

comes down to Vikingligr veldi, transilvanian hunger, stream from the heavens, and time I think and I don't know if I can really vote, this list slays

Now I Am Become Dracula (underrated aerosmith bootlegs I have owned), Friday, 23 May 2014 13:18 (eleven years ago)

but yeah, keep noticing incredible albums on there. the Grief is probably the most recent thing i got into.

listening to the Incantation album now and am reminded of how great it is

charlie h, Friday, 23 May 2014 13:23 (eleven years ago)

I added the Incantation thinking Smithy would want to vote for it actually. Was 1994 a bad year for death metal after the glory years?

۩, Friday, 23 May 2014 13:29 (eleven years ago)

It was an awesome year for death metal, with the albums on that list, but also Altar, Asphyx, Fester, Hypocrisy (career best), Morgoth, Morpheus Descends, Phlebotomized, Septic Flesh, Edge Of Sanity, Brutal Truth, Molested, Brutality, At The Gates, Luciferion, Sadistik Exekution, Cenotaph, Eternal Solstice, Sarcofago...

Siegbran, Friday, 23 May 2014 14:01 (eleven years ago)

Also of course: Gorement.

Siegbran, Friday, 23 May 2014 14:04 (eleven years ago)

RYM lists by genre for 1994
Death Metal
Black Metal
Doom Metal

۩, Friday, 23 May 2014 14:23 (eleven years ago)

Looking at the Black Metal one I've got the same six records on top (slightly different order), seems my taste is boringly average?

Siegbran, Friday, 23 May 2014 14:25 (eleven years ago)

you classicist!

۩, Friday, 23 May 2014 14:34 (eleven years ago)

rym does skew European though however that doesn't disprove your point. You're European Canon Fodder!

۩, Friday, 23 May 2014 14:37 (eleven years ago)

Here is the 1994 rym metal by only United States users
http://tinyurl.com/pabnfsz

vs

everyone
http://tinyurl.com/puh6hjg

not much difference but I think some death metal does slightly better

۩, Friday, 23 May 2014 14:42 (eleven years ago)

But how was black metal received IN 1994 in North America?
Even in early 2000 when I got online most Americans I encountered either hated it or was unaware of it and they all liked death metal or pantera type metal.

۩, Friday, 23 May 2014 14:51 (eleven years ago)

Cant speak for all Americans, but from my experience on Usenet and tape trading, BM only started getting decent traction around 1997, when Century Black started, records like the Emperor reunion album got heavily promoted and the first Euro BM bands started doing overseas tours.

Siegbran, Friday, 23 May 2014 15:04 (eleven years ago)

Also of course: Gorement.

oh man good catch

Now I Am Become Dracula (underrated aerosmith bootlegs I have owned), Friday, 23 May 2014 15:06 (eleven years ago)

BM only started getting decent traction around 1997,

whatever else one thinks of him, Prozak was on top of black metal from the jump even though his radio show had previously been mainly DM/grind e.g. early Carcass etc

Now I Am Become Dracula (underrated aerosmith bootlegs I have owned), Friday, 23 May 2014 15:07 (eleven years ago)

lol I read the above as BM only started getting decent around 1997

۩, Friday, 23 May 2014 15:27 (eleven years ago)

smithy who is Prozak?

۩, Friday, 23 May 2014 15:27 (eleven years ago)

Spinoza Ray Prozak, the guy behind anus.com, KCUF Radio, etc.

Siegbran, Friday, 23 May 2014 15:52 (eleven years ago)

god I hated that guy. besides the obvious national socialist crap, anybody who uses "populist touches" to say that Sepultura's 'Arise' sounded more commercial can suck it.

getting strange ass all around the globe (Neanderthal), Friday, 23 May 2014 16:03 (eleven years ago)

cant say I've heard of him at all. I assume he was a big metal personality over there?

۩, Friday, 23 May 2014 16:36 (eleven years ago)

the Emperor reunion album got heavily promoted

Was that Anthems? That was considered a reunion album?

jmm, Friday, 23 May 2014 16:53 (eleven years ago)

Between 1993 and 1996 Emperor was just Ihsahn, the other three members were in jail. When Samoth got out they got two new guys to replace Tchort and Faust, and recorded Anthems. So it was their big 'comeback' record.

Siegbran, Friday, 23 May 2014 17:06 (eleven years ago)

Are you excited about their new comeback?

۩, Friday, 23 May 2014 21:16 (eleven years ago)

Burn My Eyes

Toni Braxton-Hicks (Turrican), Friday, 23 May 2014 21:40 (eleven years ago)

really? each to their own and all but that record never lived up to the large amounts of hype it received IMO

Angkor Waht (Neil S), Friday, 23 May 2014 21:45 (eleven years ago)

really great year for metal...my favs

Acid Bath - When the Kite String Pops (love both Acid bath albums)
Amorphis - Tales From the Thousand Lakes (got into this one late but it's so damn ear wormy)
Bolt Thrower - ...For Victory
Cannibal Corpse - The Bleeding (hafta admit, I think this is overrated in their ouevre)
Cryptopsy - Blasphemy Made Flesh (other than the weird channel-usage in production, some of their best stuff's on here)
Darkthrone - Transilvanian Hunger
Emperor - In the Nightside Eclipse (one of my first black metal albums - used to love playing this on my 7:00 am commute to school)
Incantation - Mortal Throne of Nazarene (my first Incantation album! it's no Onward to Golgotha but it's still awesome)
Mayhem - De mysteriis dom Sathanas (my fav black metal album)
Nailbomb - Point Blank (just got into this and looooooooove it)
Pantera - Far Beyond Driven (i'll ride for this)
Slayer - Divine Intervention (underrated)

getting strange ass all around the globe (Neanderthal), Friday, 23 May 2014 21:48 (eleven years ago)

Considering I'm p much BM ignorant, I imagine aero's posts itt are prob a good way to get in. That said this is likely Sky Valley vs. Deliverance for me though I suspect World of Demise merits another listen before this partic lever gets pulled...

when I was in the 3rd grade I thought I was Geir (Drugs A. Money), Saturday, 24 May 2014 02:11 (eleven years ago)

great call on the Gorement. one of the greatest death metal albums to come out of Sweden.

charlie h, Saturday, 24 May 2014 02:43 (eleven years ago)

I thought you guys would dig that Prong album more

۩, Saturday, 24 May 2014 14:49 (eleven years ago)

anybody else itt think Testament's "Low" is a much better version of what Machine Head ultimately tried to do?

"Low" isn't in my top 3 (or arguably, even my top 5) of Testament albums but damn if it doesn't have some fantastic tracks. The first three are pretty sizzling.

also that Bolt Thrower is pretty great but I didn't vote for it as I only just got into it last year.

I've always felt CoC's Deliverance was bested by Wiseblood, but don't listen to either much anymore.

getting strange ass all around the globe (Neanderthal), Saturday, 24 May 2014 14:52 (eleven years ago)

I've heard precisely six of these albums, so keep on posting your personal favorites, I'm just picking up recommendations for later.

nah no way, thats the album where i jumped off the bus. saw them in 1996 when that album was out when they supported metallica at the barrowlands (capacity 1900)
Pepper, who i never cared for, was really annoying that night but the band were tight.

۩, Tuesday, 27 May 2014 16:36 (eleven years ago)

I might give it a listen again though

۩, Tuesday, 27 May 2014 18:16 (eleven years ago)

Harvey Milk. No question. Despite this being an amazing list, that HM album still knocks me out every time I ever listen to it, it somehow stays surprising and smart and packed with soul and heart and riffffffffs.

Everyone is awful except you. Wait, no, you are also awful. (jjjusten), Tuesday, 27 May 2014 18:35 (eleven years ago)

By the way, it's also a great record to beat up "meh you just want to believe vinyl sounds better" jerks with because it's great on cd/mpwhatever because the tunes yo, but on vinyl it's O_O spacious and crushing, it seriously brings out all of the best arguments against limiting etc.

Everyone is awful except you. Wait, no, you are also awful. (jjjusten), Tuesday, 27 May 2014 18:38 (eleven years ago)

For me it came down to Nightside Eclipse and Dream Theater, so I guess I literally held the deciding vote for the tied 1st. Now I definitely want to hear that Harvey Milk album.

Tom Violence, Wednesday, 28 May 2014 00:26 (eleven years ago)

man I can think of 5,000 1994 albums I'd vote for prior to Dream Theater. and that includes the album Guy Mann-Dude did with Miloš Dodo Doležal
