Emperor gets my vote, but narrowly ahead of Tiamat, Amorphis, Bolt Thrower, Mayhem and Cannibal Corpse. What a crazily good year for metal.

Toss-up for me between The Obsessed and Godflesh (not their best album—that would be Pure—but their last great one).

Nine Inch Nails and Soundgarden are not metal. I'd even argue Marilyn Manson and Helmet, but I was feeling benevolent.

If badmotorfinger or the albums before had been in it i'd argue but I agree with Adrien that superunknown, as great as it is, isnt metal.

tough one, but it's Mayhem for me. it was my real entry point to the non-symphonic black metal, and I still dig the shit out of it no matter how many times I played.

tho the Acid Bath was a close second

also that Slayer album is criminally underrated

In 94 for me it would have been a toss up between CC, Pantera, or Slayer.

I came to love quite a few albums on this list later on, but was unaware of them back in 94.

I only like maybe four of these. No wonder I ditched metal in that era.

I remember everyone who loved the first 3 Danzig albums was gutted with Danzig 4 but nowadays cuz everything after was so bad its now seen as one of his solo career highlights.

I heard Downward Spiral for the first time earlier this year, and got REALLY into it. like, listening-several-times-a-day-for-a-month, taking-walks-at-night-just-for-an-excuse-to-hear-it-again level obsession

ha Downward Spiral was one of the few albums amongst these that i knew at the time.

I knew "Closer" from radio play... I was 7 in 1994 :|

what a fucking ridiculously great list. some absolutely killer records get easily lost among the obvious highlights - solitude aeternus is great, tales from the thousand lakes is great, stream from the heavens is incredible. both those enslaved records are worth consideration imo. non serviam deserves love. fuckin', Time is a good Fate album, side 1 is especially great; probably the album I listen to most of anything here.

but transilvanian hunger though.

i was 12. not too young for NIN, Pantera, Helmet, and Slayer apparently.

listened to the dogshit outta melvins & kyuss - prong, helmet & slayer less so. the rest crept in later.

not saying the downward spiral isn't a good album...

but yeah, keep noticing incredible albums on there. the Grief is probably the most recent thing i got into.

It was an awesome year for death metal, with the albums on that list, but also Altar, Asphyx, Fester, Hypocrisy (career best), Morgoth, Morpheus Descends, Phlebotomized, Septic Flesh, Edge Of Sanity, Brutal Truth, Molested, Brutality, At The Gates, Luciferion, Sadistik Exekution, Cenotaph, Eternal Solstice, Sarcofago...

But how was black metal received IN 1994 in North America?
Even in early 2000 when I got online most Americans I encountered either hated it or was unaware of it and they all liked death metal or pantera type metal.

Cant speak for all Americans, but from my experience on Usenet and tape trading, BM only started getting decent traction around 1997, when Century Black started, records like the Emperor reunion album got heavily promoted and the first Euro BM bands started doing overseas tours.

Between 1993 and 1996 Emperor was just Ihsahn, the other three members were in jail. When Samoth got out they got two new guys to replace Tchort and Faust, and recorded Anthems. So it was their big 'comeback' record.

Considering I'm p much BM ignorant, I imagine aero's posts itt are prob a good way to get in. That said this is likely Sky Valley vs. Deliverance for me though I suspect World of Demise merits another listen before this partic lever gets pulled...

"Low" isn't in my top 3 (or arguably, even my top 5) of Testament albums but damn if it doesn't have some fantastic tracks. The first three are pretty sizzling.

also that Bolt Thrower is pretty great but I didn't vote for it as I only just got into it last year.

I've always felt CoC's Deliverance was bested by Wiseblood, but don't listen to either much anymore.

I've heard precisely six of these albums, so keep on posting your personal favorites, I'm just picking up recommendations for later.

nah no way, thats the album where i jumped off the bus. saw them in 1996 when that album was out when they supported metallica at the barrowlands (capacity 1900)
Pepper, who i never cared for, was really annoying that night but the band were tight.

I might give it a listen again though

Harvey Milk. No question. Despite this being an amazing list, that HM album still knocks me out every time I ever listen to it, it somehow stays surprising and smart and packed with soul and heart and riffffffffs.

By the way, it's also a great record to beat up "meh you just want to believe vinyl sounds better" jerks with because it's great on cd/mpwhatever because the tunes yo, but on vinyl it's O_O spacious and crushing, it seriously brings out all of the best arguments against limiting etc.

For me it came down to Nightside Eclipse and Dream Theater, so I guess I literally held the deciding vote for the tied 1st. Now I definitely want to hear that Harvey Milk album.
