Got 25 ballots total, most included album rankings as well. I'll begin today with the top 5 albums and maybe some tracks depending on what goes down at work. My rollout timing might be a little sporadic so apologies in advance. I will have this wrapped up by Friday around lunch time.

emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Monday, 9 June 2014 17:28 (ten years ago) link

there was such a massive gap between the top 5 and the rest that it wasn't even worth posting them.

The albums results were pretty predictable really.

Strictly EZ Snappin' Nhex (Spottie), Monday, 9 June 2014 18:16 (ten years ago) link

this reminds me that I have never seen that 24-page comic that came w original pressing of ATLiens. I don't really like the cover art itself but I do like records that come with comic books just on principle

Οὖτις, Monday, 9 June 2014 18:33 (ten years ago) link

w b-nel in coming to appreciate the debut a whole hell of a lot more as a result of this poll. prob underrated it in my rankings as a hardwired result of having given it too little attention over the last two decades, but it's def up there w their best.

also, while i still love TLB, it's more the love for a cool, weird, longtime friend than for a consistently great collection of songs. cuz yeah the latter not so much. hindsight.

sci-fi looking, chubby-leafed, delicately bizarre (contenderizer), Monday, 9 June 2014 18:42 (ten years ago) link

Yeah I've never seen that either xp!

I had to buy the ATLiens cd three times cos the first one got scratched up from over use and the next one got stolen. Third time I bought it my friend and I (we were 16) had a 45 minute drive to meet these girls and we needed supreme confidence and I hadn't replaced the stolen one yet. The music store was out of the way so all there was close was a Blockbuster Video that happened to sell a few albums. Bought it for like $20 didn't even care it was overpriced and the clean version. Still remember not saying a word that whole drive just soaking it up at extreme volumes feeling like badasses. Do not remember anything about the girls tbf.

Their most g funk sounding song?

Strictly EZ Snappin' Nhex (Spottie), Tuesday, 10 June 2014 17:43 (ten years ago) link

I love how the bass line bounces around with the drums on Neck Uv Da Woodz. Classic hook too

Strictly EZ Snappin' Nhex (Spottie), Tuesday, 10 June 2014 17:46 (ten years ago) link

the groove on "neck uv da woodz" is so great, it sounds like it's always moving away from you

emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Tuesday, 10 June 2014 17:50 (ten years ago) link

there's some more good Mystikal/Earthtone III stuff on Let's Get Ready, love hearing those kinds of combos of different strains of southern rap

some dude, Tuesday, 10 June 2014 17:53 (ten years ago) link

I can't rank the top 5 listed. Huge artistic achievements with all of them and play them all about equally. ATliens probably had the least progressive jump out of them but had the ridiculous groove and atmosphere. Speakerboxx somehow madly underrated too considering how much it sold, I guess that could be why? Stankonia might be their apex moment, in a culmination of sounds type way, and probably achieving all their goals as a group.

Raccoon Tanuki, Tuesday, 10 June 2014 18:07 (ten years ago) link

hell yeah! i mean just the rollout in general. thanks, spottie. vote counts would be nice, though, and not just for the occasional.

"babylon" the only track i wanna call out as too low. love outkast best in high-bpm freakout mode or when they're rolling smooth & slow, at the extremes. in that spirit, hope "return of the gangsta" places real damn high.

Strictly EZ Snappin' Nhex (Spottie), Tuesday, 10 June 2014 18:24 (ten years ago) link

Strictly EZ Snappin' Nhex (Spottie), Tuesday, 10 June 2014 18:26 (ten years ago) link

Another great track, but the appearance of these ATLiens deep cuts make me regret not voting for "Wailin'"

voodoo chili, Tuesday, 10 June 2014 18:32 (ten years ago) link

i wish i got to vote. i'm sure "reset" didn't make the cut :(

billstevejim, Tuesday, 10 June 2014 18:37 (ten years ago) link

Liberation points strongly towards tthe next couple Badu albums imo; the extended piano outro is so similar to the ending of "Cleva" thatI almost expect Erykah to start singing "alright alright alri-ight"

xp

nova ydal (Drugs A. Money), Tuesday, 10 June 2014 18:43 (ten years ago) link

Great stretch of tracks here! "Liberation" was a tough cut for me, glad it made it.

Jazzy Belle the only thing that seems really low to me so far.

Millenium is really good and barely missed my ballot

Those ATLiens tracks snuck up on me in the last week.

Funk autocorrect (cryptosicko), Tuesday, 10 June 2014 19:24 (ten years ago) link

I found it really hard not to fill my ballot with the whole of ATLiens. Voted for Millennium and 13th Floor/Growing Old. Jazzy Belle was one of the last songs I cut.

Kitchen Person, Tuesday, 10 June 2014 19:34 (ten years ago) link

Liberation reminds me of first hearing Aquemini when I got given a copy. Didn't really know who Outkast were, didn't have high hopes based on the cover, and it blew my mind. I wasn't sure if it could keep up the quality till the end and then it came to Liberation and suddenly they were my new favourite hip hop act.

What is wrong with songs? Absolutely nothing. Songs are great. (DL), Tuesday, 10 June 2014 19:50 (ten years ago) link

"Liberation" reminds me of Super Metroid, has the same chill but unsettling groove used throughout that game. Love 'em both.

Vinnie, Tuesday, 10 June 2014 20:11 (ten years ago) link

The cover is amazing tho. xp

uppers epilepsy sh@kedown (The Reverend), Tuesday, 10 June 2014 20:15 (ten years ago) link

uppers epilepsy sh@kedown (The Reverend), Tuesday, 10 June 2014 20:15 (ten years ago) link

Yeah I came around to the cover.

What is wrong with songs? Absolutely nothing. Songs are great. (DL), Tuesday, 10 June 2014 21:05 (ten years ago) link

I think for me, the cover was an immediate "I must have this". I didn't even really know their deal, I'd only heard "Elevators" (which kind of went completely over my head when I was 10 tbh) and "Rosa Parks", which I loved because it didn't sound like anything else on the radio

uppers epilepsy sh@kedown (The Reverend), Tuesday, 10 June 2014 21:07 (ten years ago) link

Huh, I just remembered this but the other song radio here picked up on was "Skew It on the Bar-B" but nothing else from Aquemini other than those two.

uppers epilepsy sh@kedown (The Reverend), Tuesday, 10 June 2014 21:08 (ten years ago) link

And then the CD (which I had to go behind my parents' back to buy cause of the PA sticker!) blew my mind wide open.

uppers epilepsy sh@kedown (The Reverend), Tuesday, 10 June 2014 21:09 (ten years ago) link

may be the only one, but i don't really like "jazzy belle"

sci-fi looking, chubby-leafed, delicately bizarre (contenderizer), Tuesday, 10 June 2014 21:58 (ten years ago) link

yeah i assumed it would be much higher but i've never gotten into it

Strictly EZ Snappin' Nhex (Spottie), Tuesday, 10 June 2014 21:59 (ten years ago) link

Strictly EZ Snappin' Nhex (Spottie), Wednesday, 11 June 2014 07:06 (ten years ago) link

"Ova Da Wudz" the 2nd song i voted for to place, and of particular interest to me because Big Boi's hat tip to Frank Ski's "Whores In This House" is afaik the first time a Baltimore club record was referenced on a big mainstream rap album (and the Frank Ski record had only come out 3 years earlier in '93).

some dude, Wednesday, 11 June 2014 10:09 (ten years ago) link

oh wow that had never occurred to me, although you could cite "1, 2 Shit" as a predecessor if you wanted, even though it was tucked away on a 12" b-side and I guess both "Whores in This House" and "Funk Dat" are kind of at the nebulous point of being straight up house vs club starting to develop into its own thing. caveats, caveats, caveats.

uppers epilepsy sh@kedown (The Reverend), Wednesday, 11 June 2014 10:44 (ten years ago) link

also my second to place, btw :)

uppers epilepsy sh@kedown (The Reverend), Wednesday, 11 June 2014 10:46 (ten years ago) link

oh man we're getting into a real tangent now but i don't think of "Funk Dat" as a club song even if it is a housey rap song from Baltimore -- also never thought about this before but "One Two Shit" was a year before "Funk Dat" so i guess Sagat was biting Phife!

some dude, Wednesday, 11 June 2014 11:04 (ten years ago) link

"Ova du Wudz" one of mine too and the second best ATLiens song imo.

Strictly EZ Snappin' Nhex (Spottie), Wednesday, 11 June 2014 14:56 (ten years ago) link

kinda surprised that that placed so highly, didn't know people cared about it beyond it being a solid intro

Strictly EZ Snappin' Nhex (Spottie), Wednesday, 11 June 2014 14:57 (ten years ago) link

thanks for that bit about Whore In This House. Didn't know any of that, hadn't ever heard that track.

Strictly EZ Snappin' Nhex (Spottie), Wednesday, 11 June 2014 14:59 (ten years ago) link

That's how I thought of "myintro" as well, but after revisiting SPCM I realized what an awesome lead-off track it is. Great intense beat, excellent verses from both Dre and Big Boi. Ended up getting onto the end of my ballot.

intheblanks, Wednesday, 11 June 2014 15:18 (ten years ago) link

Think my previous thoughts were influenced by "Intro" being in the title, when really it's a full-on song with two verses and a hook, not only an "introduction to the album" track.

intheblanks, Wednesday, 11 June 2014 15:19 (ten years ago) link

Always thought that one got really boring really quick like. keeps repeating the hook over and over and over

Strictly EZ Snappin' Nhex (Spottie), Wednesday, 11 June 2014 15:40 (ten years ago) link

"Myintro" was very high on my ballot, I basically consider it a great standalone song more than an intro on a "Dreams & Nightmares" tip

some dude, Wednesday, 11 June 2014 15:43 (ten years ago) link

Always thought that one got really boring really quick like. keeps repeating the hook over and over and over

― Strictly EZ Snappin' Nhex (Spottie),

Sure did! I dunno about you guys but I heard "The Way You Move" far more than "Hey Ya" around here by a factor of 20. "Hey Ya" basically disappeared on radio in Miami around January '04 while TWYM just kept going through the year and into 2005.

I liked it on first listen: it has aMidnight Love-era Marvin Gaye vibe, which can't be copied enough.

not a huge fan of either "all in the way you move" or "she lives in my lap". both good songs, but both wear thin quickly. the latter before it's even over. i think "she lives" could have worked with, like, cee-lo on the hook.

glad that "decatur psalm" did so well! think it's the first of my votes to show up today.

Catching up now, a couple that I voted for. I'm pumped that Decatur Psalm made it, beat is more Memphis than ATL, which is a cool contrast from the rest of the album.

Love how dense with rhymes Raekwon's verse is.

intheblanks, Thursday, 12 June 2014 19:57 (ten years ago) link

top three dre verse on Return

everything is is so perfectly placed in the production. so cinematic

Strictly EZ Snappin' Nhex (Spottie), Thursday, 12 June 2014 20:00 (ten years ago) link

Didn't include this on my list, and then listened to Aquemini on the way to work this morning and felt like an idiot for not doing so.

intheblanks, Thursday, 12 June 2014 20:08 (ten years ago) link

Missed Royal Flush, must have been when I wasn't paying attention

Skew It is great obviously.

voodoo chili, Thursday, 12 June 2014 20:08 (ten years ago) link

yeah, return is all-time. been running through my head for days. smoky as fuck.

Strictly EZ Snappin' Nhex (Spottie), Thursday, 12 June 2014 20:31 (ten years ago) link

yeah i figured we were getting to that portion of the poll but i figured player's ball was a lock for top ten

balls, Thursday, 12 June 2014 20:33 (ten years ago) link

hmmm, was my vote for "Player's Ball" Remix (that piano!) included with the other "Player's Ball" votes?

uppers epilepsy sh@kedown (The Reverend), Thursday, 12 June 2014 20:33 (ten years ago) link

Reminder that the So Fresh So Clean remix with Snoop is really great and apparently only exists on the internet as a blown out and low qual Youtube

rev, nope

Strictly EZ Snappin' Nhex (Spottie), Thursday, 12 June 2014 20:39 (ten years ago) link

would've only bumped it 4 points ahead of So Fresh anyway.

Strictly EZ Snappin' Nhex (Spottie), Thursday, 12 June 2014 20:41 (ten years ago) link

man the keyboards on "so fresh so clean"... could listen to that melody alone for hours

le goon (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 12 June 2014 20:41 (ten years ago) link

with Player's Ball placing out of the top 10 and so many jams left to go, I'm beginning to worry that SPCM's title track didn't make the poll. Only time will tell I guess.

intheblanks, Thursday, 12 June 2014 20:42 (ten years ago) link

damn, I haven't had time to keep up with this in the past two days, but I won't stand for this Stankonia slander. It's so outlandish and colorful and vibrant and full of life. It might not be my favorite Outkast album but it's the one that I have the most fun when it's on.

No way "Myintroletyouknow" makes it but the title track doesn't.

voodoo chili, Thursday, 12 June 2014 20:47 (ten years ago) link

Stankonia feels like the least "perfect" of their four classic records, but that's something I like about it.

intheblanks, Thursday, 12 June 2014 20:48 (ten years ago) link

i pray you're right, voodoo chili

Strictly EZ Snappin' Nhex (Spottie), Thursday, 12 June 2014 20:49 (ten years ago) link

Wow voting it 1st place seems perverse

, Thursday, 12 June 2014 20:50 (ten years ago) link

Much like "Black Ice", I feel that's a better UGK song than Outkast song. I mean, everyone's mama likes Pimp C's verse best, right?

The Reverend, Thursday, 12 June 2014 20:52 (ten years ago) link

All-time great beat and video, one of my favorite horn charts in all of music.

RIP Pimp C.

voodoo chili, Thursday, 12 June 2014 20:53 (ten years ago) link

the andre intro is really what made it timeless tho

°ㅇ๐ْ ° (gr8080), Thursday, 12 June 2014 20:53 (ten years ago) link

xxp didn't vote for it for that reason, even though Big and Dre contribute two of my favorite verses they've ever done.

voodoo chili, Thursday, 12 June 2014 20:54 (ten years ago) link

Fine with it placing because they did contribute classic verses but didn't feel the need to vote for it.

Strictly EZ Snappin' Nhex (Spottie), Thursday, 12 June 2014 20:56 (ten years ago) link

I love the way the beat subtly shifts to accommodate each MC. Dre enjoys the full blast of the sample, without the drums, Pimp gets the hi-hat heavy snap, Bun gets extra kicks and handclaps and Big Boi destroys the breakdown.

voodoo chili, Thursday, 12 June 2014 20:56 (ten years ago) link

yeah just a perfectly constructed song on all fronts.

Strictly EZ Snappin' Nhex (Spottie), Thursday, 12 June 2014 20:57 (ten years ago) link

I love the way the beat subtly shifts to accommodate each MC

^^^this. spun my head around when I heard this song. and all the MCs kill it

Οὖτις, Thursday, 12 June 2014 21:18 (ten years ago) link

I worked an event recently where Lady Antebellum performed, and their rhythm section jammed on the "So Fresh, So Clean" riff for a good 5 minutes in soundcheck. I'm a little over it though, and I still can't believe the Anne Frank line on that song.

some dude, Thursday, 12 June 2014 21:37 (ten years ago) link

Wow voting it 1st place seems perverse

― 龜

This was me. It's one of my favourite songs of all time. Return of the "G" was going to get my number one until I saw I could vote for it.

Kitchen Person, Thursday, 12 June 2014 21:48 (ten years ago) link

As much as I love Outkast nothing they've done comes close to bringing me the same amount of joy International Players Anthem has.

Kitchen Person, Thursday, 12 June 2014 21:53 (ten years ago) link

it is a very joyful and triumphant track.

Stankonia is so weird; it's a bit impenetrable and feels like it builds its grooves and momentums in fits and starts. I p much had to pore over it to get it.

Southernplayablah was such a find, listening to the debut for the first time. I've been playing that one a ton since. Outkast has sweet title tracks

Yes, great chorus

, Friday, 13 June 2014 15:58 (ten years ago) link

It's been at the back of my mind how their choruses stayed wordy through Stankonia but got so weird/bad that they almost became good - like compare that from Aquemini, to "We just can't be amazed, even if you pulled the pin from your hand grenade" or w/e

"Whole World" really sounds like the moment where Andre is so fed up with rapping that he's going to spend as little of the next 5 years as he possibly can doing it"

idk I dig his verse there. but then I don't think he could do much wrong around that time

nova, Friday, 13 June 2014 20:53 (ten years ago) link

Gotta take another moment to say awesome job on the pictures, spottie! Laughed out loud a number of times.

think both dre and big boi have really deadpan, severe deliveries on "the whole world" but i see what some dude's getting at

Strictly EZ Snappin' Nhex (Spottie), Friday, 13 June 2014 20:58 (ten years ago) link

Love spottieottie, put it at #4 in my poll. I find it somewhat strange as a #1, because it's an uncharacteristic track in certain ways--7 minutes long, spoken word instead of rapping. Like if I was introducing someone to Outkast, I probably wouldn't play this song.

But on the other hand, it's such a clear thesis statement of what Outkast was all about throughout their existence, so it's also a perfect number 1.

intheblanks, Friday, 13 June 2014 21:03 (ten years ago) link

I flipflopped between it and SPCM as my #1 and I finally relented and made it #1 for all the reasons you mentioned - 7 minutes, spoken word, etc.

, Friday, 13 June 2014 21:06 (ten years ago) link

Which is also why this:

I'm also pulling for Elevators, which is their most singular track. Who else could have possibly conceived of it?

thanks for the thanks, all! This was a fun poll to run.

'Kast is probably my favorite music act when all is said and done. Changed the way I listened to music when I first heard ATLiens in 96. Started paying attention to detail in sound and overall production. Still consider it a top 5 sounding hip hop album. Put me down a totally different music listening path than I was on. Opened me up to the world of southern rap.

so i guess my non placers were Speedballin, Call of Da Wild, Slum Beautiful and Vibrate
21 out of 25 makes me a typical fan i guess

tbf the top 50 makes up like a third of their whole catalog (and a good number of the rest is skits/interludes) so it's prob kinda hard to vote for too many songs that didn't place, even when i kinda willfully avoided some singles and popular songs.

the diametric opposite of traditional rap: vulnerable, expressive, and willing to explore new things.

These were the kind of questions that The Love Below brought about—questions about what constituted “real rap,” and whether emotionality and exploration could exist within that conception.
