The albums results were pretty predictable really.

this reminds me that I have never seen that 24-page comic that came w original pressing of ATLiens. I don't really like the cover art itself but I do like records that come with comic books just on principle

w b-nel in coming to appreciate the debut a whole hell of a lot more as a result of this poll. prob underrated it in my rankings as a hardwired result of having given it too little attention over the last two decades, but it's def up there w their best.

also, while i still love TLB, it's more the love for a cool, weird, longtime friend than for a consistently great collection of songs. cuz yeah the latter not so much. hindsight.

I had to buy the ATLiens cd three times cos the first one got scratched up from over use and the next one got stolen. Third time I bought it my friend and I (we were 16) had a 45 minute drive to meet these girls and we needed supreme confidence and I hadn't replaced the stolen one yet. The music store was out of the way so all there was close was a Blockbuster Video that happened to sell a few albums. Bought it for like $20 didn't even care it was overpriced and the clean version. Still remember not saying a word that whole drive just soaking it up at extreme volumes feeling like badasses. Do not remember anything about the girls tbf.

I love how the bass line bounces around with the drums on Neck Uv Da Woodz. Classic hook too

the groove on "neck uv da woodz" is so great, it sounds like it's always moving away from you

there's some more good Mystikal/Earthtone III stuff on Let's Get Ready, love hearing those kinds of combos of different strains of southern rap

I can't rank the top 5 listed. Huge artistic achievements with all of them and play them all about equally. ATliens probably had the least progressive jump out of them but had the ridiculous groove and atmosphere. Speakerboxx somehow madly underrated too considering how much it sold, I guess that could be why? Stankonia might be their apex moment, in a culmination of sounds type way, and probably achieving all their goals as a group.

"babylon" the only track i wanna call out as too low. love outkast best in high-bpm freakout mode or when they're rolling smooth & slow, at the extremes. in that spirit, hope "return of the gangsta" places real damn high.

Liberation points strongly towards tthe next couple Badu albums imo; the extended piano outro is so similar to the ending of "Cleva" thatI almost expect Erykah to start singing "alright alright alri-ight"

I found it really hard not to fill my ballot with the whole of ATLiens. Voted for Millennium and 13th Floor/Growing Old. Jazzy Belle was one of the last songs I cut.

Liberation reminds me of first hearing Aquemini when I got given a copy. Didn't really know who Outkast were, didn't have high hopes based on the cover, and it blew my mind. I wasn't sure if it could keep up the quality till the end and then it came to Liberation and suddenly they were my new favourite hip hop act.

"Liberation" reminds me of Super Metroid, has the same chill but unsettling groove used throughout that game. Love 'em both.

The cover is amazing tho. xp

I think for me, the cover was an immediate "I must have this". I didn't even really know their deal, I'd only heard "Elevators" (which kind of went completely over my head when I was 10 tbh) and "Rosa Parks", which I loved because it didn't sound like anything else on the radio

And then the CD (which I had to go behind my parents' back to buy cause of the PA sticker!) blew my mind wide open.

"Ova Da Wudz" the 2nd song i voted for to place, and of particular interest to me because Big Boi's hat tip to Frank Ski's "Whores In This House" is afaik the first time a Baltimore club record was referenced on a big mainstream rap album (and the Frank Ski record had only come out 3 years earlier in '93).

oh wow that had never occurred to me, although you could cite "1, 2 Shit" as a predecessor if you wanted, even though it was tucked away on a 12" b-side and I guess both "Whores in This House" and "Funk Dat" are kind of at the nebulous point of being straight up house vs club starting to develop into its own thing. caveats, caveats, caveats.

also my second to place, btw :)

oh man we're getting into a real tangent now but i don't think of "Funk Dat" as a club song even if it is a housey rap song from Baltimore -- also never thought about this before but "One Two Shit" was a year before "Funk Dat" so i guess Sagat was biting Phife!

That's how I thought of "myintro" as well, but after revisiting SPCM I realized what an awesome lead-off track it is. Great intense beat, excellent verses from both Dre and Big Boi. Ended up getting onto the end of my ballot.

Think my previous thoughts were influenced by "Intro" being in the title, when really it's a full-on song with two verses and a hook, not only an "introduction to the album" track.

Sure did! I dunno about you guys but I heard "The Way You Move" far more than "Hey Ya" around here by a factor of 20. "Hey Ya" basically disappeared on radio in Miami around January '04 while TWYM just kept going through the year and into 2005.

I liked it on first listen: it has aMidnight Love-era Marvin Gaye vibe, which can't be copied enough.

My enjoyment of "The Way You Move" has definitely been diminished by overexposure, but gotta say that it has a great bridge.

"The Way You Move" is more Pepsi to me than fool's gold - tastes great when I get one sip, but hard to drink a whole bottle of it. I didn't relisten to that album when making my ballot and I forgot how much that hook gets run into the ground

"Lap" was actually one of two Love Below tracks I almost voted for. great beat, even if the spoken Rosario part may be one of the most cringe-inducing moments on the whole exhausting album.

chonkyfire..that was kast really taking it to people at the end of the lp. That track had bare confident anger dripping from it, crazy kick and snare simply dressed with a buzzed out guitar,finished with their Source awards speech, Kast were doing something so simply in this song that no one else was or capable of in a really simple and confident way. dres wailing before bigs verse,dre just snappin on the hook...man, incredible.

"Crumblin' Erb" my favorite debut song.

"ghetto music" never quite worked for me. it's a wonderful idea, sure, but as music it just doesn't come together. and holding it up as a one-track triumph over the love below seems a bit odd, as dre produced it.

I love the way the beat subtly shifts to accommodate each MC. Dre enjoys the full blast of the sample, without the drums, Pimp gets the hi-hat heavy snap, Bun gets extra kicks and handclaps and Big Boi destroys the breakdown.

I worked an event recently where Lady Antebellum performed, and their rhythm section jammed on the "So Fresh, So Clean" riff for a good 5 minutes in soundcheck. I'm a little over it though, and I still can't believe the Anne Frank line on that song.

Love spottieottie, put it at #4 in my poll. I find it somewhat strange as a #1, because it's an uncharacteristic track in certain ways--7 minutes long, spoken word instead of rapping. Like if I was introducing someone to Outkast, I probably wouldn't play this song.

But on the other hand, it's such a clear thesis statement of what Outkast was all about throughout their existence, so it's also a perfect number 1.

I flipflopped between it and SPCM as my #1 and I finally relented and made it #1 for all the reasons you mentioned - 7 minutes, spoken word, etc.
