post pics/links to awesome jeans. i think this will be my next fashion mission in a few weeks.

Of course they're only as "skinny" as the sizing and proportions allow -- I am decidedly not thin and I love my size 10s or 12s in the short length. Also they are under $100 (around $70 retail) and often on sale for around $30.
― Laurel, Wednesday, 18 June 2008 14:28 (seventeen years ago)
Sorry, those are Levis 531 low skinny jeans.
i hate skinny jeans on even the skinniest chix. its the tapering at the ankle that looks kind of stupid to me I guess. im all pro-flare though so its not that surprising.
― sunny successor, Wednesday, 18 June 2008 14:45 (seventeen years ago)
Yeah, we're going to have to agree to disagree about that, I don't do flared.
― Laurel, Wednesday, 18 June 2008 14:54 (seventeen years ago)
<3 flared. these are mine:
http://www.brandjunkie.com/images/products/765%2000%2003%20back_3461192723870.jpg
this is where you tell me that flares on guys are a baaaaaaad idea.
― Upt0eleven, Wednesday, 18 June 2008 15:01 (seventeen years ago)
haha it depends!
i love levis
― Surmounter, Wednesday, 18 June 2008 15:02 (seventeen years ago)
I also don't do boys who do flared, but, y'know, that could be no great loss.
― Laurel, Wednesday, 18 June 2008 15:03 (seventeen years ago)
flared is essential
― Curt1s Stephens, Wednesday, 18 June 2008 15:32 (seventeen years ago)
oh, i love these jeans so much...

Me too!!!
I have been living in wide-legged jeans since about Januar but I really don't like flares or boot cut jeans. The wide-leg ones I have kind of look similar to the above only a little less tight in the thighs. I guess they're kind of like sailor pants. Maybe.
― ENBB, Wednesday, 18 June 2008 16:00 (seventeen years ago)
Sort of like this although the pockets are totally different:

yeah, it's awesome.
― ENBB, Wednesday, 18 June 2008 16:05 (seventeen years ago)
I have a very similar (cheaper) bag in kelly green from Matt & Nat. :)
― Laurel, Wednesday, 18 June 2008 16:18 (seventeen years ago)
i've read that those are JBrand "lovestory" jeans here on nordstrom's website but am not at the pain threshold for spending that much on jeans, i think.
― colette, Wednesday, 18 June 2008 16:38 (seventeen years ago)
skinny jeans all the way for me - found a pair of calvins years and years ago and they're still kickin! skinny jeans are best jeans for bike riding too
there is a store here and near my house even called JEANS JEANS JEANS they totally size you up and find the jeans that're right but i still haven't gone there for myself yet. i mean, i haven't bought new jeans in a really long time

― felicity, Wednesday, 18 June 2008 17:16 (seventeen years ago)
kelly green and royal blue are definitely 2 of my favorite fashion colors
― Surmounter, Wednesday, 18 June 2008 17:17 (seventeen years ago)
i have a pair of the jbrand 'lovestory' in sort of a washed out grey.. but they were on 50% off or more. feel like i have to lose 5 pounds to wear them so they're still sitting there in the bag, two months later.
― daria-g, Wednesday, 18 June 2008 19:27 (seventeen years ago)
ok, here's my jeans question. i know you're supposed to buy them kind of tight in the store as they'll surely relax. but how tight is tight? i'm always paranoid about getting something that makes my legs look like sausages, and then end up with jeans that are baggier than they should be. i may be trying on fancypants jeans tomorrow, hence the question.
― colette, Thursday, 19 June 2008 16:37 (seventeen years ago)
TIGHT. I buy jeans inappropriately tight as in TOTALLY stuffed into the legs, and wear them around the house a little. Every single time, I think "Wo, am I really still this size? Yowch!" and every time, within 4-5 wearings I need to wet them to shrink them back up.
― Laurel, Thursday, 19 June 2008 16:45 (seventeen years ago)
Bias stretch is an amazing thing.
i buy jeans as comfortable as possible & within 4 or 5 wearings they are falling down around my thighs
thank god 4 belts & water
― deeznuts, Thursday, 19 June 2008 16:47 (seventeen years ago)
ha. thanks laurel - i have the jbrand pair and another solid grey pair (kind of skinny) that are TIGHT and i keep thinking i got the wrong size but haven't worn to stretch out at all yet.
― daria-g, Thursday, 19 June 2008 17:00 (seventeen years ago)
Well, the Levis that I like are around 1-2% spandex (or whatever), depending on the color. So maybe that's part of the effect. But I still think you have to take advantage of the bias stretch of cotton twill and go for it.
― Laurel, Thursday, 19 June 2008 17:57 (seventeen years ago)
daria, where did you come across the cheap jbrands? i looked on ebay and they all seem to be size 0, which i'm not.
― colette, Thursday, 19 June 2008 17:58 (seventeen years ago)
barney's co op sale. they weren't super cheap but i think like $85 instead of $160+?
― daria-g, Thursday, 19 June 2008 17:59 (seventeen years ago)
revolve always has denim on sale, too, but it can be difficult to find anything above a 27w.
― lauren, Thursday, 19 June 2008 18:00 (seventeen years ago)
i'm kind of scared of revolve, after looking at a dress you posted i clicked through to summer tops, and they were all so expensive. i just can't bring myself to spend even $90 on a top, let alone $300, which was probably the average price. i'm not sure when/if i'll get over this, but i guess it's probably for the best, really...
― colette, Thursday, 19 June 2008 18:12 (seventeen years ago)
the jeans that are on sale tend to be drastically discounted, though. i'd say it's worth a look, esp as you're pretty slim - you'll probably have more luck with the sizes than i do.
― lauren, Thursday, 19 June 2008 18:14 (seventeen years ago)
laurel are you quite tall? i find that skinny jeans just don't work on me at all because i have super short legs, big thighs AND big hips, so i just look dumpy in them.
― Rubyredd, Friday, 20 June 2008 01:43 (seventeen years ago)
No talk of raw denim?
― libcrypt, Friday, 20 June 2008 01:49 (seventeen years ago)
I have never tried skinny jeans. I'm tall but not skinny with wide hips but pretty good legs. Maybe I should try but they've always given me the fear!
― ENBB, Friday, 20 June 2008 01:59 (seventeen years ago)
erica you'd probably look super hot in skinnies, esp those ones posted at the top. i still can't figure out what sort of jeans i should get. i have these awesome grey cotton pants i bought years ago for like $15 in australia and i love them: they're really fitted through the leg, with a really narrow bootcut, and they are the perfect length! didn't have to take up the hems! but the seams on the inner thighs are finally wearing through so must find a replacement.
― Rubyredd, Friday, 20 June 2008 02:09 (seventeen years ago)
I think I'm gonna try the ones Laurel keeps praising (those pictured upthread) once I have more $.
Why do jeans have to be so complicated? Grrrr.
― ENBB, Friday, 20 June 2008 02:12 (seventeen years ago)
ps RR - I got your FB message and address has been noted. :-)
Uniqlo has some super cute jeans right now. I didn't try any on though, because last time I tried on their jeans they ran very very small.
― Virginia Plain, Friday, 20 June 2008 03:38 (seventeen years ago)
My go-to jeans are G-Star Raw in cigarette (super skinny) cut.
I love, love, love them now even though I only thought I was buying them because they were cheap. They are a mix of super-dark black and blue in kind of a stripe (I don't know how this is "raw" but it is). Also they were aspirational -- I bought them one size small as they were a bargain.
My only advice on jeans is to buy them as tight and as dark as possible. Then never put them in the dryer, ever.
― felicity, Friday, 20 June 2008 03:39 (seventeen years ago)
i just can't bring myself to spend even $90 on a top
i guess since i started sorta tangentially being involved in the fashion world, my whole concept of the cost/value of clothing has changed dramatically... its like now "ooooh those shoes are only $200!! i should totally get them!" when several years ago i'd be like wtf $200? i just took a peek at whats hanging in my closet and only saw 2 things that were less than $90... oops! i can drop a months rent on a comme des garcons trench coat and a shitload on dinner at gramercy tavern, but i have the hardest time justifying spending ten bucks on a new pillow case when the one i have now is ratty and has holes all over it. seriously, wtf is wrong with me. fucked up priorities....
aaanyways, jeans, i have a pair of tsubi's ive had for a couple years that i loooove, but went to the store and its not as nice anymore... im always daunted by the walls of denim at stores. dunno what to get.
― phil-two, Friday, 20 June 2008 06:08 (seventeen years ago)
this girl i know just spent $2000 (with her discount) on this lanvin bag
http://www.aloharag.com/highseas/assets/images/english/store/women/ln/bags/aw0r4mnvy/a.jpg
$2000.. (!)
― phil-two, Friday, 20 June 2008 06:12 (seventeen years ago)
oh that meant to go in the post pics of bags thread, but i guess relevent to my last post
― phil-two, Friday, 20 June 2008 06:15 (seventeen years ago)
Hahahahahhaah oh god no, I'm 5'3" and hippy. But once I decided to love my thighs my perspective just kind of...shifted, and skinny jeans made me proud of my figure, whereas all the longer, boot-cut jeans I used to wear with heels seemed like I was trying to fool people.
― Laurel, Friday, 20 June 2008 13:42 (seventeen years ago)
Not that I want this head-to-toe look, but I don't think this girl is feeling apologetic about her ass:
http://mybabyjo.com/clothes/capridenim_lg.jpg
― Laurel, Friday, 20 June 2008 13:45 (seventeen years ago)
it might also be a problem that i don't have nice ankles, otherwise i think i might be able to pull of this look.
― Rubyredd, Friday, 20 June 2008 13:48 (seventeen years ago)
Well, you don't have to wear capris. I do prefer the skinny jeans short-ish, just around the ankle bone, but that's just me.
― Laurel, Friday, 20 June 2008 13:58 (seventeen years ago)
My only advice on jeans is to buy them as tight and as dark as possible.
I agree with this!^^^^ Except now that it's summer Levis thinks we all want light blue, instead of dark denim. Bastards.
― Laurel, Friday, 20 June 2008 14:00 (seventeen years ago)
Wear them in a thinner material, you just need to try the texture, some jeans are made thicker than others and are hotter. I mean I could go into extreme detail about how every shape can wear those skinny jeans/capris look if you know how to do it but basically wear jeans in the summer but make sure the material isn't one thats too heavy. You'll know, trust.
― VeronaInTheClub, Friday, 20 June 2008 14:04 (seventeen years ago)
I ain't worn jeans in over two years, I think? I might never wear them again. This is just me, but I don't think that jeans are very flattering on fifty-something year-old guys. Pair them with sneakers and it gets truly blecch. I want to look dignified in my old age, ffs.
― dell, Friday, 20 June 2008 14:26 (seventeen years ago)
so you're telling us you're not paul newman or robert redford eh
― rrrobyn, Friday, 20 June 2008 14:30 (seventeen years ago)
guess so!
― dell, Friday, 20 June 2008 14:50 (seventeen years ago)
But basically I think I just don't like jeans. Period.
The revival in recent years of designer jeans with stupid embroidery on the back pockets really rankled me. I forgot to complain about that on the "Nineties Fashion" thread...
― dell, Friday, 20 June 2008 14:53 (seventeen years ago)
I respect your position on jeans, dell. It's good to have standards.
― Laurel, Friday, 20 June 2008 14:59 (seventeen years ago)
Thanks, that's a kind way of putting it!
― dell, Friday, 20 June 2008 15:01 (seventeen years ago)
laurel, are the wrangler jeans you like the slim-fit cowboy cut?
― lauren, Friday, 20 June 2008 15:04 (seventeen years ago)
i ask because i was just looking around at various jeans online and found a wrangler style that looked decent: mid-rise, slim fit, straight leg.
― lauren, Friday, 20 June 2008 15:05 (seventeen years ago)
Wrangler? I've never bought Wranglers...? I went through 2 or 3 pars of Lee Dungarees but they stopped making the ones I loved.
― Laurel, Friday, 20 June 2008 15:06 (seventeen years ago)
oh, ok. i mixed up lee and wrangler.
― lauren, Friday, 20 June 2008 15:13 (seventeen years ago)
ok you guys, i bought the jbrand jeans. i was meeting my mom at nordstrom anyway, so figured i would try them on which would immediately stop all my longing because they looked so stupid. but they didn't, i really like them.
only trouble is-- they're way more low rise than i'm used to (this is partly because i have a natural urkel waist so everything feels too low rise to me), and i have a tiny bit of muffin top hanging over. they are tight (and very dark), so i don't know if that will improve as it stretches out over the next few wears? i never ever wear tops that bare the midriff, either, so think it shouldn't matter because it will be completely covered. but if it does, please tell me and i will go get my $200 back, that would be OK.
― colette, Friday, 20 June 2008 20:17 (seventeen years ago)
Ladies:
Take a look at A.P.C. New Cure or Hipster model jeans.
IMO these are the best jeans in the women's market.
― Steve Shasta, Friday, 20 June 2008 20:41 (seventeen years ago)
Steve Shasta please advise as to jeans that accommodate 5'11' girls with high hip-to-waist ratio.
― quincie, Friday, 20 June 2008 21:02 (seventeen years ago)
Someone told me Joe's Jeans Muses but I'm not sure???
apc jeans are relatively short inseam, right? hudson i think are v long, i haven't tried any myself
― daria-g, Friday, 20 June 2008 22:03 (seventeen years ago)
shasta, please help me with A.P.C. jeans sizing. i tried on the new cure this weekend in a size 29. in levi's or whatever i usually wear a 27. the 29 was too small to even button and just barely made it over my hips. now, looking at their website i see that 30 is the largest size they even offer. is APC trying to tell me that i am a fat?
― bell_labs, Monday, 23 June 2008 13:57 (seventeen years ago)
now everything i'm reading about APC jeans says to go several sizes down from your usually size? what the hell?
― bell_labs, Monday, 23 June 2008 14:28 (seventeen years ago)
Guys, my company's CEO sent out an email on Friday saying we can all wear jeans through Labor Day. Woo! And I was about to buy some summer work pants. jeans and $$$ saved.
― sunny successor, Monday, 23 June 2008 15:32 (seventeen years ago)
A.P.C. are true to size. They will shrink if you wash in hot water and machine-dry, so I'd rinse in cool water when you need to clean the garment.
The seat and yoke of most jeans are constructed via using chainstitching to make double-interlock flat seams. This means is that jeans in their native state will give a little in the seat(butt)/lower back. With a pair of A.P.C.s that will last at least 10 years, you should try to find the most snug fit possible because they will "stretch" (ie, due to seam construction as opposed to fabrication components). I would go for the 29 (with effort) and if that's too uncomfortable try the 30. Raw denim is very coarse and stiff at first, it will begin softening immediately with wear.
Many US companies began "vanity sizing" in the 80s, convincing people that they wore a smaller size than what the garment measures out to be (eg, a size 27" garment measures to a true 29"). Some brands (like Levi's) resisted this trend for over a decade until they saw their sales decrease because those brands "didn't fit" the consumer. European and Asian companies do not vanity size which may explain the variance.
― Steve Shasta, Tuesday, 24 June 2008 23:24 (seventeen years ago)
Vanity sizing is the worst - size small became size large pretty quickly as everyone stopped exercising and started eating like shit. It's crazy, buy a size small from 1980 and it fits like ... a small. You need to get an XXSmall to get an actual small these days.
― burt_stanton, Wednesday, 25 June 2008 03:05 (seventeen years ago)
so APC IS saying i'm a fat oh well at least their voluminous dresses fit.
― bell_labs, Wednesday, 25 June 2008 13:58 (seventeen years ago)
wtf is a voluminous dress
― Surmounter, Wednesday, 25 June 2008 14:06 (seventeen years ago)
i was using it to mean smock dresses/non-fitted silhouettes
― bell_labs, Wednesday, 25 June 2008 14:11 (seventeen years ago)
oh i thought they were designed to like give your body more volume =P
― Surmounter, Wednesday, 25 June 2008 14:12 (seventeen years ago)

― bell_labs, Wednesday, 25 June 2008 14:13 (seventeen years ago)
I really wish dresses cut like that wouldn't invariably look like a potato sack on me. They look so chic and comfy :(
― quincie, Wednesday, 25 June 2008 15:01 (seventeen years ago)
same here. i suspect its a chest size prob.
― sunny successor, Wednesday, 25 June 2008 16:07 (seventeen years ago)
YES that is clearly why i can wear them horray for the 1 dress that looks good on the flat of chest
― bell_labs, Wednesday, 25 June 2008 16:08 (seventeen years ago)
To learn more about vanity sizing, take a tape measure and your favorite jeans and measure the waist and compare to the stated size.
― Steve Shasta, Wednesday, 25 June 2008 17:30 (seventeen years ago)
ignorance in this matter is preferred
― rrrobyn, Wednesday, 25 June 2008 17:33 (seventeen years ago)
yeah i don't want to get even more depressed
― bell_labs, Wednesday, 25 June 2008 17:34 (seventeen years ago)
tho truth is that i do measure my waist. b/c it is for me the best indicator of weight gain reality and when to do something abt it...
p.s. let us pls not start a diiet thread on i love style unless it is a thread abt an all-lobster diet and what restaurants have cute bibs
― rrrobyn, Wednesday, 25 June 2008 17:40 (seventeen years ago)
yes plz no diet threads
― horseshoe, Wednesday, 25 June 2008 17:43 (seventeen years ago)
Or unless it's the "Popular" diet, in which the lunch kit consists of a carrot stick and a cigarette -- and you vomit up the carrot stick.
― Laurel, Wednesday, 25 June 2008 17:43 (seventeen years ago)
Pass the lighter, please.
― Laurel, Wednesday, 25 June 2008 17:44 (seventeen years ago)
the thing is, jeans don't sit on my waist. the waist is the narrowest part, by definition, right? even the highest cut jeans go just about to my belly button and then the waist is 2-3 inches above that.
but it still pisses me off that a.p.c. makes only up to a 30 waist (by shasta's math, a 28 to vanity sizers)
― bell_labs, Wednesday, 25 June 2008 17:47 (seventeen years ago)
i mean that's kind of ridiculous right?
i get 34 in waist & they are down around my hips by around a weeks worth of wears
but that is my STYLE
― deeznuts, Wednesday, 25 June 2008 17:49 (seventeen years ago)
Yeah, bell, I agree it seems ridic. I've never even tried on APC jeans but I don't think a Levi's 12 is going to translate so well. (I did try Uniqlo once but since I couldn't even fit into their 14 and I think that was their largest size, uh fuck 'em).
― Laurel, Wednesday, 25 June 2008 18:10 (seventeen years ago)
lol srsly there's like nothing that's an actual size 30 or size 10 or whatever, it's either vanity sizing or under-sizing or patterned all wrong. so weird. i tend to these days just hold things against my body and guess. sometimes an 8, sometimes a 12 who freakin knows
― rrrobyn, Wednesday, 25 June 2008 18:27 (seventeen years ago)
uniqlo jeans fit so weirdly on me - extremely low-riding, like they only went about 2/3 of the way up my ass.
― bell_labs, Wednesday, 25 June 2008 18:31 (seventeen years ago)
I don't care about the number (witness my posting my jeans size here), I just think it seems extreme for me not to fit into any of the available sizes. Like, I am not a very big person, all things considered? How can I be too big for your line of clothing? Ditto the 30-inch waist etc.
― Laurel, Wednesday, 25 June 2008 19:14 (seventeen years ago)
laurel, aren't uniqlo clothes UK sized? which means a 14 is a US 10...
i think i'm going to take the J brand jeans back, maybe think about tracing them and trying to find a tailor that will make something similar but that fully covers my butt.
― colette, Wednesday, 25 June 2008 19:43 (seventeen years ago)
I don't know if it's necessarily vanity sizing as just.. resetting the median of the range according to the size of the average customer. this blog has some thoughts on it..
― daria-g, Wednesday, 25 June 2008 21:43 (seventeen years ago)
I love you and I am going to read that entire series, just not tonight.
― Laurel, Wednesday, 25 June 2008 21:55 (seventeen years ago)
that blog is 100% wrong btw. trust me.
― Steve Shasta, Wednesday, 25 June 2008 22:21 (seventeen years ago)
whatevs i am down for the vanity sizing trend please keep it up so i can keep that ass fat
― bell_labs, Wednesday, 25 June 2008 22:33 (seventeen years ago)
where does one get apc jeans anyway (in loldon)
― warmsherry, Thursday, 26 June 2008 21:52 (sixteen years ago)
Any of you know about the APC New Cure/Very Tight Jeans thing? I'm a 30.5 waist (muscle, big ass, package sticks out), and I decided on a 31 waist since I'm a 31 in other "skinny" fits. Good idea? I read those jean dork messageboards and they always say to size down ... though these jeans I'm buying don't happen to be raw denim.
Anyone know?
― burt_stanton, Friday, 25 July 2008 00:29 (sixteen years ago)
package sticks out
ha.
― ENBB, Friday, 25 July 2008 00:33 (sixteen years ago)
why dont you go to the apc store and try em on burt_stanton
― max, Friday, 25 July 2008 00:40 (sixteen years ago)
It's the new stuff on the website that sells out in a day, and the store in SoHo is always sold out of my size range. I can always just return 'em.
Here's some Levis 514s I sold last year. If the jeans are any tighter it looks like I shoved a grapefruit down the front and I'm wearing some kind-of ass implant like in I'm Gonna Git You Sucka. http://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j251/mzing12/Picture025.jpg

P.S. in response to this picture from Colette way upthread --
Am I the only one who intensely dislikes this habit with women's jeans to have the hem swallow the shoe entirely? It bugs me even without total swallowing, like when jeans are worn with heels and the back hem drops almost to where the heel meets the ground.
― nabisco, Friday, 8 August 2008 17:48 (sixteen years ago)
so basically, you do not like a trouser cut/fit.
― tehresa, Friday, 8 August 2008 17:50 (sixteen years ago)
i think on the right person it is very elongating/slimming, though i do not like too much flare.
― tehresa, Friday, 8 August 2008 17:51 (sixteen years ago)
I don't care for it on jeans, especially when the jeans fit up top not in a trousery way, but in a low/tight regular-jeans way. But maybe I just associate it too much with over-made-up women standing outside downtown bars on Saturday nights, or whatever.
― nabisco, Friday, 8 August 2008 17:56 (sixteen years ago)
i agree, if you have a trouser leg, you should have a more normal waist. honestly, i don't think anyone should be wearing the low low waist muffin top butt crack thong showing shit, and that's not just bc i can't pull it off.
― tehresa, Friday, 8 August 2008 17:58 (sixteen years ago)
It's a very fashionista look, and therefore much copied by the weekend crowd. Unfort for the weekenders, the original fashion-plate wearers are more like the woman who crowed about being too small for the clothes at Jil Sander: People who think a 6 is time to go on a diet.
― Laurel, Friday, 8 August 2008 18:05 (sixteen years ago)
i like the look -- and the bag in that photo!
― Surmounter, Friday, 8 August 2008 18:06 (sixteen years ago)
I don't like when the whole show is swallowed very much either but I love wide-leg trouser style jeans in general. I want that bag soooo much.
I am so confused by Katies jeans. Is this going to become a thing? I don't know if I'm ok with that.
― ENBB, Friday, 8 August 2008 18:08 (sixteen years ago)
i actually like a tight pant that swallows a lot of the shoe. is that outlandish?
― Surmounter, Friday, 8 August 2008 18:10 (sixteen years ago)
Honestly I think the safest way to wear wide-legged pants is with flats. I can imagine lots of good versions of pants with heels but there's always the risk crossing the line into what Nabisco is talking about. If you're not sure or you're chubby and happy about it or etc, safest is go to with nice pointy low shoes that will peep out but not make you look like you're disguising another 4 inches of height under there.
Also I have several times caught a heel in deep trouser cuffs, once resulting in my falling down the PATH stairs at Grove Street. No thanks! Not after last time!
― Laurel, Friday, 8 August 2008 18:12 (sixteen years ago)
i would like the bag w/out that fringe
― tehresa, Friday, 8 August 2008 18:12 (sixteen years ago)
UGH i know, so true. those royal blue leather bags have been making the rounds in the last few years.
― Surmounter, Friday, 8 August 2008 18:13 (sixteen years ago)
i keep seeing lots of awesome bags but there will be one or two details, like random bits of fringe or a chain hanging off, that are deal-breakers for me.
― tehresa, Friday, 8 August 2008 18:14 (sixteen years ago)
That happens to me all the time with shoes, too! Being picky keeps my expenditures down, though. Phew.
― Laurel, Friday, 8 August 2008 18:15 (sixteen years ago)
oh, yeah i got a whole slew of these kinds of jeans in photos at Paris fashion week in feb 08...

― Surmounter, Friday, 8 August 2008 18:16 (sixteen years ago)
Honestly I think the safest way to wear wide-legged pants is with flats.
^^^
Yes. I've only ever worn mine with flats. Also the pants in question are proper trouser style up top too. None of that "low waist muffin top butt crack thong showing shit." Yuck.
― ENBB, Friday, 8 August 2008 18:16 (sixteen years ago)
Flats or let's say, a nice 1-2" wedge heel like an espadrille. But obv that's way more summery, not for the whole tight-tight-tight-FLARED thing like Ms Blue Bag up there.
― Laurel, Friday, 8 August 2008 18:18 (sixteen years ago)
i dunno, i always feel sexy w/ a trouser leg and heels/heeled boots. i find that w/ flats, you have to hem them, and they lose some of the cool shape created by the trouser leg.
― tehresa, Friday, 8 August 2008 18:18 (sixteen years ago)
re: the katie photo: i think that's an example of the "boyfriend" jean.
― lauren, Friday, 8 August 2008 18:20 (sixteen years ago)
ftr i do not like how the lady in phil's 2nd pic is wearing those jeans.

haa yes and i love her for it xp
― Surmounter, Friday, 8 August 2008 18:21 (sixteen years ago)
i hate the pants-swallowing-the-shoe look when the pants in question are tight flares, like in that original photo. with wide-legged, high-waisted jeans/trousers, it's not as bad.
― lauren, Friday, 8 August 2008 18:22 (sixteen years ago)
yeah me neither so much, but damn i love that Margiela coat... i like the first lady though. xp
― phil-two, Friday, 8 August 2008 18:22 (sixteen years ago)
also, at this point, i hate jeans with heels (not heeled boots, mind you). hate hate hate.
xp yeah, margiela coat - swoon.
Boyfriend jeans. Yeah. I guess it's the california cuffing that really has me baffled. Middle school flashbacks etc.
^^ Me too.

hott
Yeah, exactly, Lauren. I like wide-legged pants in the '30s-40s movie way with a higher waist, very Coco/Garbo. (Almost a palazzo pant without looking like you used a whole drawing room curtain to for each leg.)

yeah, as long as the gloves are off... gah, she is SO tacky! she's like the cheap stripper version of the 40s pin-up girl.
xp - and we love you for it, of course
― lauren, Friday, 8 August 2008 18:32 (sixteen years ago)
I ALMOST like so many things about that -- the lipstick with the gloss of an auto-body wax, the red heels, the hair all in pieces -- but somehow she just looks like she tried and failed, to me. Would like her jeans better if they were shorter, ankle-bone length.
of the '40s pin-up girl Exactly.

The ScarJo photo that everyone hated with the really high jeans and the black tank top was SO much better.

You love those jeans so much!!! :-)

― Surmounter, Friday, 8 August 2008 18:37 (sixteen years ago)
I could never never wear them cos I don't like having things around my waist. Also high-waisted jeans are so not the answer to sitting at a desk all day with the tummy bunched up. But I like that photo of her and I thought the disapproval when it came out was terribly unfair. :)
― Laurel, Friday, 8 August 2008 18:37 (sixteen years ago)
The ScarJo photo that everyone hated with the really high jeans and the black tank top was SO much better. oh yeah, from the imitation of christ show? that was not so good

I can't remember what it was for but I think she was modeling. Maybe Imitation of Christ or something like that? I just know that I've seen Laurel post about that pic/those jeans a bunch of times before. They're like her holy grail jeans.
― ENBB, Friday, 8 August 2008 18:39 (sixteen years ago)

Yes! Phil beat me to it -- like I said, I couldn't wear them either, but that's about the only way I like jeans with heels.
― Laurel, Friday, 8 August 2008 18:41 (sixteen years ago)
i think the cigarette is kind of what makes the pic even moar laurel-y!

I do actually have a pair of pointy red '50s stilettos and I have been known to wear them with very tapered ankle-length jeans. Mostly to like garage rock shows, though. Guilty as charged.
― Laurel, Friday, 8 August 2008 18:45 (sixteen years ago)
my friend's reaction to that look -- friend: that takes a certain kind of woman but it is gorgeous
― Surmounter, Friday, 8 August 2008 18:46 (sixteen years ago)
Ha, weird, I totally accept the shoe-swallowing on those proper trousers, but there is still a tiny part of my brain that has guy standards and is confused by the lack of feet/shoes and wonders about ease of walking and generally associates shoe-swallowing with
As for the ScarJo 50s-style high-waist tapered-leg heels thing, I know not many people are going to have the body type and inclinations to really pull that off, but I hope that fact will encourage those who can to run with it.
― nabisco, Friday, 8 August 2008 18:55 (sixteen years ago)
i am just checking in to say, Surmounter, i am on the same side of the tacky fence as you.
― horseshoe, Friday, 8 August 2008 19:22 (sixteen years ago)
whoah, what happened there? "generally associates shoe-swallowing with ... sloppy teenage boys and ravers," was most of what I was going to say, I think

whew, horseshoe, i'm glad i'm not alone :D

Will have to add that to the vocabulary thread. HORSEMOUNTER (adj.): things that look nice but a bit more "fabulous" than Laurel or Lauren would be likely to enjoy

the finish is atrocious though, esp. the way the outseam is totally ribboned up. total no-no.

WHY IS SHE WEARING A SCARF IN AUGUST?
― tehresa, Wednesday, 13 August 2008 20:50 (sixteen years ago)
hmm... that outfit is kind of a mash-up of katie and v. beckham , actually. a few preppy chic items, nice but possibly a bit boring/too "old" for her, thrown together with ugly ultra-premium denim and vaguely takcy stilettos.
― lauren, Wednesday, 13 August 2008 20:54 (sixteen years ago)
er, tacky.
haha i love those shoes.
― horseshoe, Wednesday, 13 August 2008 20:56 (sixteen years ago)
those shoes are a little beckham, yeah
― tehresa, Wednesday, 13 August 2008 21:07 (sixteen years ago)
i kinda like it except not the color of the jeans. brings back memories of spending like an hour trying to cuff my jeans properly every time there was dress-down day (eg didn't have to wear uniforms) in middle school.
― daria-g, Wednesday, 13 August 2008 21:36 (sixteen years ago)
last night on the train i saw, in real life, a man wearing the jeans rolled up like katie holmes. i had to write this down so i didn't forget bc it was so o_O but he was also wearing dirty white keds (the old school lace up kind, not the slip ons like vans), a keffiyeh, and a vest. also carrying what seemed to be a womens leather tote/purse.
woah.

fuck em! i have a friend who i've NEVER seen in jeans. it's strange.
― Surmounter, Thursday, 14 August 2008 20:01 (sixteen years ago)
I took the advice on this thread and bought my last two pairs of Levis as tight as possible and I'm not sure it is the right decision. One pair fits around the waste but is a bit tight around the thighs, so much so that when I walk up the subway stairs I feel very conscious of working against the stiffness of the material. The other pair fits throughout the leg but is a bit tight around the stomach. When i come home I have to undo the top button so that I can be comfortable. Did I follow your advice too literally?
― Virginia Plain, Thursday, 20 November 2008 19:31 (sixteen years ago)
laurel, please explain this 'bias cut cotton twill' thing and how to spot it, since i know nothing about fabric.
― i hope you don't pray to jesus with that mouth (Rubyredd), Thursday, 20 November 2008 19:41 (sixteen years ago)
Uh. Denim is a twill. It stretches "on the bias" that is, around your round parts (as do many other woven fabrics to some degree, the gradual stretch and fiber "memory" is just a quality of cotton in general). Which is pretty much everywhere, since jeans are constructed as flat items but have to go on non-flat bodies. You don't have to know anything about fabric! :D
Mary, I'm wearing a new pair of jeans right now that I bought on...last Thurs? One week and about 4 wearings later, they are still a little too tight but still stretching gradually. Personally, that's the tightness I want over the life of the jeans. If they stretch too much now, they'll be baggy in three months. The first few wearings are def not comfortable!
― One Community Service Mummy, hold the Straightedge Merman (Laurel), Thursday, 20 November 2008 19:47 (sixteen years ago)
ahh ok i thought it was some kind of special fabric-cut, like a bias-cut skirt! gah, and i work in a clothing store!
― i hope you don't pray to jesus with that mouth (Rubyredd), Thursday, 20 November 2008 19:51 (sixteen years ago)
I've had these jeans for a couple months. Maybe I need to distinguish between jeans that look good and jeans that are comfortable to wear around the house? Or maybe I really did buy both pairs a size too small.
― Virginia Plain, Thursday, 20 November 2008 20:25 (sixteen years ago)
virginia plain, have you worn them much since? i got a pair of levis that seemed a bit snug when i bought them and now they are totally stretched out.. but i wore them around quite a lot during the summer..
― T-PALIN (daria-g), Thursday, 20 November 2008 20:26 (sixteen years ago)
oops, xpost. i also notice maybe the darker washes are harder to stretch, my earlier pair were pretty light blue.. also i guess i bought the cheap kind of levis, i know they make a better quality style that would take longer. (had a pair like that in a beautiful dark wash that were $$$ since bought in europe, and went and gave them away for being too short.. not thinking that soon enough rolled up jeans would be back in style!! damn)
― T-PALIN (daria-g), Thursday, 20 November 2008 20:28 (sixteen years ago)
I only buy the darkest wash that isn't black, and yeah, the fabric is a little stiffer and harsher than the lighter colors, and it was DEFINITELY not cooperative last week! It's just getting kind of wearable as of today.
― One Community Service Mummy, hold the Straightedge Merman (Laurel), Thursday, 20 November 2008 20:38 (sixteen years ago)

I wear both pairs on the weekends, but kind of only outside the house. Inside, I change into something more comfy. The waistline can't really stretch that much though can it? Both jeans are a kind of stiff, lacking in stretch fabric.

I just scored some APC jeans from their 50% off sale today.
Wait a minute, from the back room of the store? I asked if the jeans were on sale as well and the sales girl unceremoniously guffawed at the naivety of my question.
The boy trying them on looked really good though, but he was afraid his tailor would not be able to create a good line upon hemming.

Denim is the infantile uniform of a nation in which entertainment frequently features childlike adults ("Seinfeld," "Two and a Half Men") and cartoons for adults ("King of the Hill"). Seventy-five percent of American "gamers" -- people who play video games -- are older than 18 and nevertheless are allowed to vote. In their undifferentiated dress, children and their childish parents become undifferentiated audiences for juvenilized movies (the six -- so far -- "Batman" adventures and "Indiana Jones and the Credit-Default Swaps," coming soon to a cineplex near you). Denim is the clerical vestment for the priesthood of all believers in democracy's catechism of leveling -- thou shalt not dress better than society's most slovenly. To do so would be to commit the sin of lookism -- of believing that appearance matters. That heresy leads to denying the universal appropriateness of everything, and then to the elitist assertion that there is good and bad taste.

styling details such as abrasions, blasting, whiskering, webbing, tacking... all are designed to specs. on the low-end, production facilities have prefab samples for examples, but on the mid- to high-end, you bring your specs at the design stage and need to be signed off on during the sample approval process.
for vintage/worn looks, absolutely... collection pieces are analyzed for their wearing. i have routinely wear tested many samples and then gave them back to the designer for analysis. i've also had a pair of original vintages borrowed for inspiration. I never accepted money for this, but then again, I was approved on buying trips to R&D competitor's garments, most of which were returned to me.

my worst pet peeve about jeans is when people wear pre-stressed jeans where the original pair was obviously worn by someone very tall, so the fading on the back of the knee ends up being around the person's mid-calf or lower
― ain't no thang but a chicken γ (dyao), Wednesday, 31 March 2010 14:58 (fifteen years ago)
They're called whiskers on women's jeans, don't know for sure if also on men's. On us girls, they radiate more or less out from the crotch, which is what I REALLY hate about them: like neon sign arrows pointing to incipient camel toe.
― Ask foreigners and they will tell you the gospel comes from America. (Laurel), Wednesday, 31 March 2010 15:07 (fifteen years ago)
if you ever look at a pair of vintage jeans, they usually will have patterns of wear and whiskering. for consumers who want to wear "vintage looking" jeans, these patterns and whiskering are designed to emulate what happens to a pair of normal jeans over time.
it has nothing to do with raw denim, it has everything to do with time and wear.

You don't need magic to conjure up the perfect pair of jeans - they're right here! Everything you'd wish for in a pair of pants, these on-trend, lightweight 'chief of all jean-ies' feature a pleated front, hip pockets, slightly tapered leg, and sleek, pocketless back. Craft an astonishingly amazing look by pairing this great garment with a puff-sleeved chiffon blouse, bejeweled sandals, and as many bangles as you wish, and people will have to blink to make sure they saw you right!

― progressive cuts (Tracer Hand), Wednesday, 1 September 2010 17:36 (fourteen years ago)
1) there are no pockets on the butt, which frequently leads to the appearance of a flat butt, esp. with such high waisted pants2) pleats are like a little cave for poochy stomachs (ie normal stomachs). if a person has even the smallest pooch, pleats are basically an advertisement for that pooch. little fabric arrows pointing at one's pooch.
conclusion -- these pants are unflattering if you do not have a perfectly flat stomach or a perfectly round rear.
to the 3-4 people on whom this would be flattering, enjoy your high waisted pleated chambray jeans

we aren't so far from those. if the cycle of fashion repeats 70-80s move from slim hip-hugger flares to high waisted pleated tapered poufy jeans repeats, skinny jeans having almost finished their run surely means you'll see someone wearing those without irony any day now.
― sunny successor, Wednesday, 1 September 2010 19:12 (fourteen years ago)

The girls are already wearing the shorts version of those jeans: high-waisted and pleated and possibly with cuffs, worn with oxford shoes of some kind probably mousy brown -- very "studenty". As soon as fall hits I'm sure the long versions will make the scene.

Zimbabwean cotton yarn is dyed using the labor intensive, classic rope dyeing technique involving a series of dips into indigo vats followed by sun drying (dipped 19 times). While most jeans makers today use right-hand twill denim, KMW denim is made in a selvedge 13.5 oz. left-hand twill. KMW fabric is woven on pre WWII American built wooden shuttle looms.

I want to buy some APC jeans but unfortunately nowhere sells them here so I can't try them on. this wouldn't ordinarily be an issue except... I recently bought some 32" waist zara jeans that fit nice however I picked up some 32" cos cords and though I can get them shut they're unbearably tight.
should I just go with the 32" in the APC knowing that I'll size down a bit as we come out of winter and they'll stretch out a bit?

anyone have any tips for sealing in jean color? I bought these AE flares on ebay and while they're surprisingly bitchin in color and form they are a saturated dark wash and I find my hands blue after wearing them for an hour or two. I really don't want them to fade.
― calling planet dearth (sunny successor), Monday, 3 January 2011 14:18 (fourteen years ago)
coz:sounds like apc 32" will be comfortable, shouldn't be as unbearable as your Zara cords.uniqlo denim are probably the best value jeans out there, in partic. if you are seeking japanese selvage denim.
ss:you are describing "crocking" where the dye isn't set properly and causes bleedage. a quick rinse in (very) cold water should get most of the dye to bleed out but should not damage the richness of the denim. the key to keeping the dye set is to avoid washing/drying. neither cotton nor indigo are very colorfast so minimize the time in the wash/dryer to avoid fading.

actually found somewhere in town that does APC today and tried on the 32. were fine (but black) so going to cop some indigo online

w/ my last pair of colour-bleedy jeans i took the internet's advice and put them on a short cold wash, inside out, no detergent but half a cup of white vinegar, then hung them to dry indoors. it seemed to work - the colour's still dark and doesn't rub off on white bags any more.

measure the actual waist of a pair of jeans that fit correctlyAPCs run two inches larger in the waist than tagged size, and can stretch another inch or two beyond that
so if your actual waist = 36" you probably want a 33 in APC

ehhh, this is gray territory as everybody's idea of "fit" is not the same, some people enjoy an ultra skin tight girdle effect, others like to sag around their knees. APC use unsanforized denim that is "true to size" (ie, not ShrinkToFit), although there was a trend a few years ago to really undersize which would make for people squeezing into the smallest jeans possible, but that's a separate sport. I've owned about 10 pairs of APCs and they've all fit in the comfortable range of the size spectrum. YMMV.
― i love you but i have chosen snarkness (Steve Shasta), Tuesday, 4 January 2011 00:12 (fourteen years ago)
My size 36 APC New Standards measured 38" unworn and stretched rapidly to where they were downright baggy (if I'd known more then, I would have gotten a 35). Online shop measurements generally back that up - add two inches to tagged size to get the unworn waist. (and the denim is sanforized)
That's why I figure matching the actual waist size of some comfortable jeans to the actual waist of some APCs minus an inch or two (so that it would ultimately stretch to equal the other jeans, since the APCs won't be constantly washed like most people's Gap/etc. jeans) is the safest route.

I am so fucking fed up with jeans. I just bought a pair that fit like a glove in the store and the first time after being washed but after a couple hours they're too loose and bagging out in places.
Also, was it Levis that would make you jeans in your exact proportions? How much is that. I think I'm about at that point. Do they still do that?
also lol
More than half of women (54 percent) try on at least 10 pairs of jeans to find one pair they would buy.
Maybe this is my problem. I hate clothes shopping and trying on clothes in particular. I don't have the patience.

I just wear whatever version of a Levi's low-rise skinny jean I can find in my size and in Short for not more than $60. Maybe 2% stretch or so certainly doesn't hurt.

So upthread, someone mentioned about apc's lasting 10 years or whatever. Do people wear these (or other expensive, high quality jeans) to do yard work or otherwise live an active outdoor lifestyle? Or are they primarily just worn as urban casual wear?
― how's life, Sunday, 20 May 2012 14:31 (thirteen years ago)
I can't afford expensive, high quality jeans (bitter) so I just get Tommy Hilfiger skinny jeans at Macy's. Honestly, they have been the fitting jeans I have ever owned. That isn't saying much though.
I have a really bad relationship with jeans. At a year old I was given my dad's old, vintage baby pair of Levi's that my mother later cut (mutilated and killed) and turned into shorts. UGH! Would love that pair now for my little girl. Also, because it was the first and last time I was ever in and owned a cool pair of jeans.
At 7 my grandmother bought me a pair with a huge parrot embroidered all the way down the right pant leg and had a matching vest with parrot. Then at 9 I had a pair of Del Rio Jeans, ugh! Made in Del Rio, TX and they had a huge faux leather tag stitched on the back that broadcasted I was proudly wearing poorly designed jeans made in the armpit of Texas. They were snug at the waist with really wide legs that never tapered, just BIG all the way down. I got made fun of when I wore them to school on the day we didn't have to wear uniforms.
Wore 501's most of my adult life. Sad story, me and jeans. Always wanted a nice, selvedge pair that fit perfectly and yes, that were mega pricey. Oh, before Macy's, bought my jeans at Target! How's that for fuckin sad :(

these jeans are not losing their shape, so far so good, and i've worn them several times with lots of walking and dancing and sitting down, yknow, the stretch-'em-out activities. i hate jeans that stretch out after one or two wears; they are so over for me.

You would be crazy to wash raw denim for at least 6 months, maybe a light hand washing. Quality jeans will grow into their shape the more you wear them without washing, especially if you buy the right fit. Although I have a friend who is serious about jeans and bought a very pricey pair of japanese jeans and climbed into the bathtub filled with hot water with them on. He said they are the best fitting jeans he owns now.

no no no
you should always soak your raw denim for 30 minutes or so in cold water (no soap) and then hang-dry them. this will remove the starch, open up the denim a bit and get any shrinkage out of the way. if they're well-dyed jeans you should hardly notice any loss of color, though they will lose that crispy shiny look.
then you can go ahead and do what jacob is saying.

― obliquity of the ecliptic (rrrobyn), Tuesday, 5 June 2012 21:53 (thirteen years ago)
i actually disagree w/ jacob, after like 10 years of collecting fancy fancy jeans (up to like $400) i've eventually realized that no matter how you wash and wear them (within reason) you will eventually get denim-nerd fades and creases. the key is to keep putting wear on the jeans. i know people who've worn non-fancy diesel jeans for five or six years and have machine-washed and dried them monthly, and they look more or less like the hot jeans on denim forums. similarly i know people who've ended up w/ that look after a year, machine washing and drying every month, but they rode their bike a couple miles every day in their jeans.
the one thing that jacob's approach actually does well is that it gets the fades and creases in before you go through that awkward medium-blue "mom jeans" color.
but mark my words, the craze for super-dark denim and is dying and i bet you just like terminally unhip shit like crazy pattern shirts and sweaters are suddenly trendy the mom jean denim color (not the fit) will be back soon.
― the late great, Tuesday, 5 June 2012 21:54 (thirteen years ago)
robyn in your case it doesn't matter since your jeans are a stretch blend, so soak or no soak they're not going to change shape.
― the late great, Tuesday, 5 June 2012 21:56 (thirteen years ago)
my greatest concern here is just that they don't lose their shapexpokay good!
so do i have to stick to the no-washing for 6-months thing or ?
― obliquity of the ecliptic (rrrobyn), Tuesday, 5 June 2012 21:58 (thirteen years ago)
that has to do w/ the color and fading, not the shape
the thinking is that moving in your jeans causes the cotton fibers to bend and flex which weakens the bond between dye and fabric. similarly parts of the jeans rub up against things which also weakens the bond.
indigo is quite water soluble, so the parts that have been weakened by wear will fade faster. denim heads do the "wash every six months" thing w/ the idea that parts that get a lot of wear (like around the kneesΒ and pockets) will develop cool creasing patterns as they fade.
the problem with that thinking is that if you're not actually moving around a ton in your jeans, the effect of the wear will be minimized. i've seen great results from jacob's method and i've seen pretty weak ones. it seems to have to do w/ a lot of variables ... i've seen people beat the fuck out of their jeans and not wash for a year and get terrible fades because whatever they did put wear much more evenly on the jeans. in my case, i had jeans that i wore dancing for a long time and rarely washed and they didn't turn out so good because i think sweating through the jeans kinda put wear on the entire fabric.
on the other hand my gf has some crappy j crewΒ dark denim jeans that got great fades, but that has to do w/ the fact that she wears them ass-tight and spends a lot of time kneeling to help middle school students and running around after them.
so yeah, long story short is ... i don't know.
― the late great, Tuesday, 5 June 2012 22:04 (thirteen years ago)
ah it's like jeans fashion science/religion or somethingi'm just like to have found a pair of jeans that look cool, hold their shape and don't flatten my ass
― obliquity of the ecliptic (rrrobyn), Tuesday, 5 June 2012 22:07 (thirteen years ago)
i suppose you will not be too surprised to learn that there are big forums pretty much devoted to your jeans and how often to wash them
TBH though despite all the hoopla about fading and whatnot, the reasons not to wash your jeans often are: 1) as long as you're not pooping your pants, pants develop odors much more slowly than shirts, and jeans in general are a pretty loose breathable cotton weave so that helps w/ odor too.
2) jeans are rugged wear so they tend to actually look better when they're more beat up than when they're clean and pressed
3) if you like having jeans dark it will keep them dark much longer
like i said i think dark jeans are overexposed and i'm getting more and more into natural shades of jeans
so like, this is what denim heads are trying to do
but what i'm saying is i think as much fun as it is trying to get your jeans to look like that, i'd rather have something more natural like this (that's what i mean by mom jeans color)
― the late great, Tuesday, 5 June 2012 22:11 (thirteen years ago)
Yeah unless you have denim that is dyed with natural indigo the no washing is sort of pointless, I think. The reason I don't wash mine is like valid said, to get the creases and wear before the bottom legs start fading as well. But really I love my jeans just as much before the creases start setting in, I sort of like the process. I've never tried Nudie or many of the designer jeans that say they are raw denim because I don't believe them. My favorites were a pair of dead stock Big E's I used to own that I think we're from the 50's. I bought them in the early 90's before the denim craze came around to the states. Wish I hadn't sold them. I also had a pair of Evisu that I washed and dried and eventually they looked awful, I guess like Mom jeans, so I've never dried my jeans now and rarely wash them.

Man, people are super serious about jeans! I wear them more than any other item of clothing so it's time to invest instead of just repeatedly buying $50 once they inevitably start to sag and lighten too much. So I guess you'd recommend buying them on the tight side?
― wolf kabob (ENBB), Tuesday, 5 June 2012 22:24 (thirteen years ago)
My friend who got me into jeans in the 90's even buys vintage hand soap and using a wash board on his really expensive vintage Levis and other japanese jeans. There was a line of replica Levis in the early 2000's that I really liked. I don't really keep up with jeans like I used to but they lasted longer than any other denim I had. The problem I always have is the holes that form on the but near the back pocket or a hole in the pocket from my wallet. If the denim is very thick like real raw denim or old Levis this rarely happens.
― JacobSanders, Tuesday, 5 June 2012 22:26 (thirteen years ago)
If you're buying 100% cotton jeans that aren't pre-shrunk you want to buy them tight otherwise they will stretch out and not have a nice form a year from now. even slightly shrunk raw denim with loosen up after wearing.
― JacobSanders, Tuesday, 5 June 2012 22:29 (thirteen years ago)

― obliquity of the ecliptic (rrrobyn), Tuesday, 5 June 2012 22:31 (thirteen years ago)
e if you like how a pair of jeans fits, buy one size smaller in the waist because it'll stretch an inch in the waist
if one size smaller is too tight anywhere but the waist you need a different cut (otherwise even at the bigger size it's going to end up disproportionate - you will either have comfortable waist and too tight everything else or baggy waist and everything else ok)
if they're stretch blend (not 100 percent) they won't really stretch so just buy your size
― the late great, Tuesday, 5 June 2012 22:35 (thirteen years ago)
actually jacob i think you're off there
unwashed unshrunk jeans (unsanforized) are "shrink to fit" so you buy one or two sizes bigger and then rinse because they'll shrink an inch or more
then as you wear them, they stretch and you when they're too stretched you wash again.
― the late great, Tuesday, 5 June 2012 22:42 (thirteen years ago)
Doesn't it depend or whether you washed jeans in hot or cold water? The more I think about this the more confused I'm becoming. I think I was off.
― JacobSanders, Tuesday, 5 June 2012 22:50 (thirteen years ago)
no, the fibers contract when they dry. hot water will shrink fabrics if it's as hot as the air in your dryer but in general i don't think that's true for most washers (even on hot)
like boiled wool is shrunk but it's literally boiled for hours.
evaporation also shrinks jeans, which is why they'll shrink even if they dry on a line, but the faster you set them the more they'll shrink.
tbh though i don't think clothing shrinkage is well understood at the molecular level
― the late great, Tuesday, 5 June 2012 23:10 (thirteen years ago)
er faster you dry them
like i keep reading stuff like this
Moving from one state to another requires crossing an energy barrier. It even takes energy to get back to the lowest-energy, most disordered state. Hot temperatures in laundering give the fibers the energy that allows them to change state so that the long polymer chains scroll back up again.
which is basically the same as saying "HEAT MAKES IT GO"

My jeans always wind up needing a belt after a while, even if they fit nicely elsewhere. All I want is a nice slim pair of jeans that will fit in the waist :-(

belts are part of wearing pants imo

― obliquity of the ecliptic (rrrobyn), Wednesday, 6 June 2012 21:47 (thirteen years ago)
(sometimes me)
belts are def part of wearing jeans and in fact early jeans were designed to be worn with suspenders
― the late great, Wednesday, 6 June 2012 21:53 (thirteen years ago)
I bought this belt almost 15 years ago and I still wear it almost everyday, one of the best investments I've made. Nothing hardly last 15 years.
― JacobSanders, Thursday, 7 June 2012 00:06 (thirteen years ago)
Haha, me! I never wear a belt! Because where my jeans go to is not my waist, and my hips are too padded to hold things up unless they scrunched me way in.

i think it really depends on what shirt you're wearing. and what kind of pants/jeans. tucking in or not tucking in. high-waisted or low-waisted. will belt make a weird line in yr shirt or what. i have different belts for different purposes. i do know that a lot of women don't wear belts though. but i just feel it pulls the look together. even if the belt is worn outside, as an accessory rather than a utilitarian device.

Re: belts being de rigueur for wearing jeans - are there any stylish stretch-band jeans? Or are stretch-band waists hopelessly mom-jeans/dad-jeans?
(also, TS: the comfort of not having an inflexible leather belt sticking into your back or stomach vs. a belt's lack of constant squeezing of your thigh)

I need new jeans! I'm thinking of trying shrink-to-fit 501's, but I have rly skinny legs. Will it look like I'm swimming in them? Does anyone have tips on shrinking them?
― Yo! MTV La Tengo (Stevie D(eux)), Monday, 28 January 2013 20:13 (twelve years ago)
yow what the hell is going on with the outfit of the second girl i posted? i didn't look too closely at that one. still like the first outfit.
you have two options stevie: you can get spendy and buy the 1947 501s which are slim fit or you can forego shrink to fit and just get 511s. you might be tempted to buy your regular size and shrink those but you'll get something awkward thatΒ won't be as flattering as buying a slim cut in the first place.
― the late great, Monday, 28 January 2013 23:30 (twelve years ago)
yeah i think the thing with 501s is even when you're done shrinking them, they're not going to be skinny jeans
if you look around then 501xx can be had for v cheap (sub 50$ on amazon, even less if you get lucky with a sale), so it's not the end of the world if you think they look a bit mom jeans in the end. i am old and i have a big bum, so i like 501xx.
― caek, Tuesday, 29 January 2013 03:23 (twelve years ago)
Yeah, even spending like $40 on jeans is a lot of money for me right now. I'm past the phase of wearing, like, crustpunk-skinny but the fact that I've got chicken legs and nonexistent thighs/butt means that normal sized jeans look baggy on me.

I have been unsuccessfully jeans shopping myself. All I can say is that it was a shitty enough endeavor when I had $$$ to spend; now that I'm on a tight budget, it is BEYOND SHITTY.
Got a pair of madewells rail straight in dark blue wash on sale; not terrible but not great--stretched out quite a bit (2% elastane) and gapes at the waist.
Gonna try Levi's "Bold Curve" straights when I hit up a Levi's outlet.

511s forever
by the way is there truth to the notion that levi's prices its american jeans so low as to lose money, and makes up for it with extortionate prices in the rest of the world? my anecdotal experience seems to back it up but i wonder if someone could bring the knowledge on this subject (i.e. STEVE SHASTA)

― δΉδΉ, Tuesday, 12 March 2013 16:08 (twelve years ago)
levis were pretty expensive in hong kong but so were a lot of american brands
With women's jeans, Levi's seem to offer each cut and color for like 2 seasons or something. Like, they have not made the 531 Low Skinny since the season when I first bought two pairs of them, which is a crying shame. I did just check ebay, which seems like it might be fruitful eventually.

have any of you ever done the shrink to fit thing? any tips? does it work? for levi's, i'm thinking
i have a few pairs of 501s but damn if the fabric is not up to the role of being a jean. and/or the dimensions are just subtly off for my body. they fit just fine but the panels around each "quadrant" of the intersected seams at the crotch wear out in like less than a year. i've had a couple repaired and they still get shredded.
i feel like if i did this cowboy alchemy fit process, they wouldn't be stressed in this spot and would last longer. true? bullshit?

― marcos, Friday, 27 March 2015 19:54 (ten years ago)
I think the fashion forward thing to do is have it pre-emptively applied on top of the denim so the suede wears out first. Of course I never do this, instead I put the leather inside after there's already a hole, and machine-applique it into place.
― Orson Wellies (in orbit), Friday, 27 March 2015 19:55 (ten years ago)

Then buy a wheelchair or segway to transport yourself around because you won't be able to move your legs
― ιΎ, Friday, 27 March 2015 20:00 (ten years ago)
tbh goole i was strongly considering doing the levis shrink-to-fit 501s and even ordered a pair but i ended up with a few pairs of their other styles that fit me great immediately. i didn't trust the sizing estimates for buying STF 501s and didn't want to waste the money with a pair that didn't fit right after going through a whole tedious process.
lots of myths imo around "the perfect jean" that requires doing all kinds of silly things to get "the perfect fit" on a pair that "will last forever", idk maybe i just got lucky w/ the off-the-shelf pairs of the other levis or maybe they don't really fit me well and i'm just ignorant. anyways it just didn't seem worth the trouble. i am definitely not a jeans connoisseur though
― marcos, Friday, 27 March 2015 20:10 (ten years ago)
I think my permanent jean routine is going to Uniqlo or H&M and buying a pair that I will about 5 or 6 days out of the week until a hole develops in the bottom of my back pocket where the corner of my wallet is.
All of my jeans get holes here first :-/

Also fuck a front wallet so don't even try
Women's Levi's jeans are not cheap enough to consider them disposable like that! They're like $80! There are web sales sometimes, but then if you buy a different color than before and the fabric has 1% more or less spandex or w/e, suddenly they don't fit anymore.

Felt for the first time I needed better jeans, so I hunted a bit and I've just won a pair of 'only worn 3 times' Iron Heart 634s on ebay for less-than-half-price (quite lazily listed so it got no real action). A bit nervous - not many photos & I hope I've got the sizing right β but intrigued to try good denim for the first time.
― woof, Saturday, 28 March 2015 18:56 (ten years ago)
Actually what I tried to type was '16 pairs of jeans' made over the last year. They're not that difficult to do. Might be easier with a better sewing machine too.
― Stevolende, Saturday, 28 March 2015 19:07 (ten years ago)
i do shrink to fit 501s, one pair per year, they fit fine. they fade to a nice colour imo. they are cheap. there is some variation in how much i can get them to shrink, e.g. i got a pair of 1947s on sale and they barerly shrunk, but the regular line 501s shrink more. the +1" in the waist, +2-3" in the inseam rule of thumb is probably about right for those.

I was LEGIT DENIM MAN for a short period and also had some of the repro 1947 501s that I didn't wash for six months, then did a shrink-to-fit thing, and then washed again at some point and overshrunk them a bit. they were really too warm for the summer, especially pre-washing
now I gave up and have these super-comfortable uniqlo things that claim to be jeans but have space age materials in them and they're very comfortable and idgaf
― mh, Wednesday, 1 April 2015 19:46 (ten years ago)
I wear topman jeans almost exclusively, as I mentioned before anything else and I have loads of bulky fabric swimming around ankles. Quality is p good, I get about a year's wear out of a good pair.
I'd like to get into better denim but I suspect even the skinniest selvedge cuts would be way too wide for me, maybe acne studios or apc might have a thin enough cut.

Prob still too big, it's not like I'm mega skinny generally, I just have fairly stick insect ankles and judging by the size of jeans, my thighs are skinny also, I reckon those apc jeans would be v sloppy on the ankles.
I wear topman super spray on and they just seem well fitting to me.
even when it looks on the model like they're skinny the jean will arrive and be flapping everywhere.
I could try women's jeans I guess, tho my waist is 32 so, shrug emoticon.

You shouldn't get anything with the word 'slim cut' in them if you want skinnies
― ιΎ, Wednesday, 1 April 2015 21:46 (ten years ago)
Yeah I know, they just looked skinny though in the pics. Slim is a word with a wide meaning in men's fashion, for every 40 you spend on trousers the cut gets wider.
I am p sure though that all slim jeans look shit on me, joking aside, think as I said, most are a bit too long but also baggy.
I wear these, like a 15 yr old emo, but I'm confident they look well: http://www.topman.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?beginIndex=0&viewAllFlag=&catalogId=33056&storeId=12555&productId=17435337&langId=-1&categoryId=&parent_category_rn=&searchTerm=TM69D12JBLK&resultCount=1&geoip=home
In summer I'll wear a slim chino cos rolling it up tidies up the lower leg. Trousers are just a prob for me.

as someone with short and skinny legs i would rep for nudie's tight fits. i have a pair of their tight long johns with a 27 waist that i love and are by far the best fitting jeans i've ever had. i'm probably just going to buy another pair in a different colour because i can't be bothered to hunt around for ages for a pair that fit ok and then i inevitably get altered a month later when i'm fed up with them.

soo the 'official' levi's suggesch is to size up 2" waist and more on inseam (they only make inseams on the even numbers too); i read a bunch of blogs etc and found this one that seemed to have some clue what was up:
http://thighsbiggerthanyourhead.blogspot.com/2010/12/how-to-shrink-to-fit-stf-your-levis.html
and followed his process: +1" waist, +2" inseam
i wasn't able to wear them until dry, so i just hung 'em up overnight. and they didn't shrink that much! my normal size for pre-shrunk 501s is pretty snug, which i'm down with, and the shrink didn't get them close. the waist fit much higher, too. i wonder if the cuts aren't subtly more generous on the STFs to begin with?
about a week later, i gave the same pair a second soak (with a couple full pours of boiling water from my elecric kettle to goose the weak temp out my tub) and an overnight to dry and they were still a bit loose. that was about 5 days ago.
i think since then they've continued to tighten up tho; i'm wearing them now and they seem a little less roomy and didn't absolutely need to be cuffed.
so idk about cowboy alchemy but we'll see; in another month or so they could be my fave. i've also seen some people recommend doing STF w/o sizing up at all, maybe i'll give that a shot

Getting into babycord jeans for the summer. Got some really nice designs in fabric. & they're pretty unique. Just wish I could get more choices about fabric.Wonder if there are still caches of psychedelic babycord lying around anywhere or if they've all already been found.Just remember reading Anne-Marie of Sweet Charity talking about finding stuff in the early 80s. & I'm stuck with whatever I can locate now.

So the "stretch selvedge" jeans (98% cotton 2% spandex) I got at UNIQLO less than a year ago already have a huge hole in the back pocket where my wallet is! I refuse to carry my wallet around anywhere else and it seems kinda nuts these got a hole in less than a year. I'm avoiding this not-100%-cotton selvedge in the future :/

― marcos, Monday, 15 August 2016 19:32 (eight years ago)
Gustin is annoying bc orders take so long to come and returns are a pain. The one thing I got from them, a pair of blue-blacks, was nice but their "slim" fit was way tighter than other slims the same size, and after I started lifting a little they no longer fit. I may eventually try again and get a straight fit.

I also have a feeling their waist sizes are a little truer to size than the typical manufacturer, because the waist was always very tight even though in every other brand the same waist size fits me fine.

waists on jeans stretch out really fast ime. i've been a 31 for years, but tried on a bunch of 31s recently that felt really tight and at first thought "oh i guess im a 32 now." after a day of wearing them they felt totally normal though.

The great lie of designer jeans is that jeans have ever, or ever will be, cool
They are utilitarian leg coverings that attempt to balance durability with all-season comfort while being in the price range of the wage-earner
So if they hit all those marks you should be confident in your choice, not concerned

hopefully still improving my technique but have had seams at the pocket come undone on the turquoise and the white/red/beige striped ones so still have some way to go. Have fixed both and they're wearing ok but must be something I still need to perfect.Orange ones are very comfortable

― calstars, Tuesday, 21 February 2017 12:52 (eight years ago)
Yeah have made a load based on the same pair of old wrangler cords that wore out on me a few years ago.Still perfecting things though and probably should get around to drafting a pattern. I tend to take them in a lot on what the original design was, which was pretty loose.
Shirts there are all me too.
― Stevolende, Tuesday, 21 February 2017 13:33 (eight years ago)
I wear some black jeans but I'm the only one wearing locally so w/e
but yes for most of my life it was dark blue or nothing
― mh π, Tuesday, 21 February 2017 15:42 (eight years ago)
black jeans or no jeans for me
― marcos, Tuesday, 21 February 2017 15:44 (eight years ago)
I do not understand that stance
― mh π, Tuesday, 21 February 2017 15:46 (eight years ago)
blue is the color of jeans, if you are deviating from that color, there should be a distinct need or ideological stance if you're replacing blue as the default color. highlight colors, such as a deep red or novelty white are allowed under certain circumstances
feel like if they're black 501s you're required to wear a cowboy-style shirt and black sombrero
― mh π, Tuesday, 21 February 2017 15:50 (eight years ago)
apc new standards are like 200 bux now? feel like just a few years ago they were ~120-140. some bullshit.
― circa1916, Tuesday, 21 February 2017 15:51 (eight years ago)
black jeans fwiw are like the second most common common, they are pretty standard ime
― marcos, Tuesday, 21 February 2017 16:06 (eight years ago)
common colorcommon
there should be a distinct need or ideological stance if you're replacing blue as the default color
i just have an extremely limited color palette, i only wear like 3 colors
― marcos, Tuesday, 21 February 2017 16:07 (eight years ago)
yeah i'm just prodding you to see if my own ideas are any good
wearing black jeans right now tbh
― mh π, Tuesday, 21 February 2017 16:09 (eight years ago)
is black a color? i really shifted to buying a disproportionate amount of black clothing in the last few years and i'm going to say "i don't wear colors, just black/white/grey" is a stance
― mh π, Tuesday, 21 February 2017 16:11 (eight years ago)
correct
― r|t|c, Tuesday, 21 February 2017 16:12 (eight years ago)
i don't.... see colors. just clothing.
― mh π, Tuesday, 21 February 2017 16:14 (eight years ago)
i wear black or stonewashed jeans now. the 21st century has burned me out on dark navy jeans

I had always been averse to black jeans I suppose on an anti-aging rocker/goth basis but have come to love my first pair. however, my primary love remains the grey jean

I think the saving grace for her blue jeans is the careful, clever cuff folding. Or it might be the vertical lines of the wash. Or that she wears them so low

there quickly comes a point when the new jeans eclipse the old; what was once broken-in and trustworthy begins to feel sloppy and loose

y'all I am craving a pair of simple slim-cut dark blue indigo jeans w/ yellow stitching, I used to love 511's but now they're all stretchy w 1% elastene which makes me think they won't last more than a year. I also used to love UNIQLO's but they only make 100% cotton jeans in straight cut now. Can I get jeans like this for under $100???? I'm reading that Unbranded is decent???
― vision joanna newsom (Stevie D(eux)), Tuesday, 14 August 2018 23:19 (six years ago)
or can anyone convince me that stretchy jeans ARE actually durable?
― vision joanna newsom (Stevie D(eux)), Tuesday, 14 August 2018 23:21 (six years ago)
i like unbranded if the fit works for u
― call all destroyer, Tuesday, 14 August 2018 23:23 (six years ago)
or Gustin maybe???
― vision joanna newsom (Stevie D(eux)), Tuesday, 14 August 2018 23:27 (six years ago)
ugh i wish i could go try Unbranded jeans on but they don't sell them in my state or any states near me
501s?
― calstars, Tuesday, 14 August 2018 23:30 (six years ago)
i love gustin, big fan. be very confident in yr measurements if you go that route tho.
― call all destroyer, Tuesday, 14 August 2018 23:40 (six years ago)
I love the idea of 501s and how they look on a lot of other ppl but I donβt think they work well w my skinny twig legs
― vision joanna newsom (Stevie D(eux)), Tuesday, 14 August 2018 23:45 (six years ago)
the thing is that you canβt tell how big the legs are unless you roll em up because theyβre wide enough
― mh, Tuesday, 14 August 2018 23:52 (six years ago)
I think the Levi's 514s ( i have to double check) are pretty good for tall dudes with thin legs. They aren't stretchy but there is definitely a little variability in softness depending on the wash. Plus levi's always has some type of sale going on online.
― Yerac, Tuesday, 14 August 2018 23:57 (six years ago)
those were my go-to for years before the whole selvedge madness
― mh, Tuesday, 14 August 2018 23:59 (six years ago)
https://www.paulsmith.com/uk/men-s-slim-fit-11-8oz-super-soft-cross-hatch-indigo-jeans i can't find exactly the right ones on the website, the ones i like are just paul smith jeans, black patch, made in japan but don't carry the premium price of whatever the japanese denim line is, just under a hundred bucks... but i recommend those
― XxxxxxxXxxxxxxxxXxxxx (dylannn), Wednesday, 15 August 2018 00:13 (six years ago)
I'm a fan of 511sLee also used to have some nice slim fit jeans, at least in the UK
― illegal economic migration (Tracer Hand), Wednesday, 15 August 2018 00:54 (six years ago)
Edwins rule, for me. I just bought a pair of organic cotton slim fit for not much money (I think $A80) on eBay. Dyed, woven, made in Japan too. Their selvedge denim ones, and the "sen" denim (kind of ashy indigo) are great too.
― an incoherent crustacean (MatthewK), Wednesday, 15 August 2018 02:46 (six years ago)
i'm all about 501s these days once i figured out how to wear them. they now make both a skinny and a tapered version which may work better for your legs. they're always on sale so they can be had quite cheap. in fact, i bought two this weekend for $30 each
― diamonddave85ββ (diamonddave85), Wednesday, 15 August 2018 03:01 (six years ago)
yea i switched to 501s a couple years ago and now that's all i wear. they are cheap and levis always puts out different washes that I like. the button fly grew on me a lot now I love it
