Does anyone have a pair of Toms shoes? I want to get a pair to wear to work (so I don't have to take off my socks in the office when I change into heels) and I really don't want to walk in to work wearing flip flops like most girls seem to do in the morning. I need a pair of slip ons that are comfortable to wear without socks and will be able to contain my wide ass feet.

Do you really need brown? I used to try and match brown things in my wardrobe with brown shoes but it's SO HARD to have things in the right shade of brown, because there are #infinity different possibilities. I gave up and started wearing brown clothes with colored shoes, ie cream, yellow, blue, etc.

Oooh or metallics: I have 3-4 different pairs of shoes in silver, bronze, etc.

I'm soon going to need this thread's help to reconcile my need for good solid dress shoes with my compulsion to get shoes with lots of details on them. (Answer = wingtips, I think?)

shoes.. opening ceremony grey oxford flats abt $200 figuring in shipping.. i think before sale were $320 or so? but they fit really well and i'll wear them for a long time. i don't think i have any that cost more than that, though probably some would have if i hadn't bought them in europe early 2000 when the dollar was v strong, like i think my fave kenzo heels were over $400 but i got them for maybe around $125 during july sales.. and these basic black delman oxford flats i wear pretty much every other day, i know were abt $325 new but again, thx bluefly major sale.

I actually have a bit of the opposite problem (at least with clothes/shoes)--I have too much impulse control, meaning I'll see something I really really really like but then equivocate for forever until it is too late. Thus I end up with very little in my closet, and getting dressed becomes an exercise in frustration as opposed to a pleasure.

Another downside is when suddenly some sort of event pops up and I end up spending money on something I don't much like in desperation.

Note that I do not seem to have any trouble frittering away money on drinks, travel, and pricey groceries.

I would say though, having worn my cydwoqs all day for a couple of days that they are some of the most awesomely comfortable smart shoes I've ever had and one of the few I haven't had to put insoles in.

Alright ladies, I've spent the whole summer wearing the most ridiculous cheap flipflops (the kind with the fake lace/sequin "closed" toe) because I am sick of blisters and I'm tall enough as it is. Anyway it's getting colder and I realize I have to buy a pair of boots and I am thinking I might have to order online since I have size 11 (ladies') feet.

I am thisclose to just getting some docs. I like my boots black, with some sort of slight heel, and with grip on the bottom because the ice/snow is murder in the winter! I bought a pair last year with almost no grip and spent the whole winter walking....really....really...slowly.. and they were shit material that disintegrated a lot thanks to Toronto's excessive use of salt.

i'm a fan of timberland boots - bought a pair a couple years ago and they're still going strong, might buy a new pair this year. bought a pair of mephisto boots last year, which are really nice looking, but the zipper got stuck/broken halfway up one of the boots by mid-march - it sucked! b/c there was still snow, obv. and i just didn't take them in for repair (i bought them over christmas while on the west coast, so coudln't go back to the store.) but i at least had my old boots to fall back on. they don't have the grippiest bottom but it's made of rubber so it's pretty decent. every winter i saw i'm going to buy those city cleats that you stretch over the bottom of yr boot but then i never do. i mean, b/c they're kinda dorky. maybe this year i will get over their dorkiness. but probably not.

xpost musically, the target shoes are fun for a quick splurge but they destroy my feet (blisters, cramps) because they are not as well built as the more expensive (and durable) ones... I envy you for being able to wear them!

i hate myself for how picky i am about shoe quality/craftsmanship but i destroy a pair of $12 shoes in like 3 weeks.

i have pretty much destroyed a pair of $60 shoes this summer! and i didn't even wear them that much! (they were the pretty teal ones i got a couple of months ago. and which never really accommodated my toes. and which i said i wld stop wearing. and which i am wearing today.)

YES i was dumb to fall for them b/c they were so pretty and cute and i thought the pain was initially mild and wld go away. People who spent too much money on shoes try to justify it by pretending that all non-expensive shoes are death traps that give you blisters and scoliosis when you try them on. Some cheap shoes are bad and not worth the cost, but others are well made and last quite a while.

I could ask if we mean the same thing by "cheap" but I find I just don't care enough.

Besides which a Kenneth Cole sandal is the opposite of cheap so while I do adore Ms Tomato Nation, I'm not totally sure what she's on about except that she likes a shoe company that doesn't make shoes for people with actual feet. Because I've tried on Kenneth Cole ankle straps and they were several inches short of actually going around my ankles.

Finefinemusic, I am HUEGS FAN of Merrell shoes, which are basically the only shoes I've ever owned that I can walk 4 miles a day in and still feel a-okay! Even compared to sneakers!

boots.. I wear size 10.5/11 myself.. I have a pair of charles david boots with prob 3.5" heel and they're actually pretty comfortable, though I wouldn't walk around in the snow with them or anything.

what about frye? they're well made and will last a long, long time. not cheap exactly

I don't know DC very well but women in NY will walk across sheet ice in 4" Costume National stiletto boots. It's kind of amazing.

When I lived in a nabe where lots of people didn't shovel, I promised self I'd buy Army/Navy paratrooper boots the next year, but then I moved. I really really love my Frye harness boots, which are now my winter staple.

oh also with the merrells there are little covers that go over metal snaps on the decorate strap parts on the boot and a few of those covers totally came off. so yeah i am fully skeptical of merrell boots even if they have some cute styles :/

lol @ heels in winter - so common here too. for me, it is like watching magic in action - i have no idea how these women do it. but my walking style is long and heel-focused, or something, and i hate having to take shorter steps or walk slower just b/c of shoe choice and weather conditions. i slip around a lot regardless. and my friends make fun of me for my dangerous winter walking. and so i should just get those unstylish cleat things, eh

yes rrrobyn i think i have the same walking style as you. i am a mega long stride speed walker and hate how heels make me have to take smaller steps.

I am also a really fast walker and hate the little steps in heels. Oddly enough, I can run really well in heels though! (for the bus, etc) I never ever run in the winter though due to stupid ice phobias/mental blocks.

i got the high arches. i think that is part of why i have such a difficult time finding flats i like! i have some 3 1/2" or so wedges. i can walk ok in them, it's just you have to take really tiny steps bc the surface area of the bottom of the shoe is cut in half or something!

Opinions? I wanted to go for pink but it's a light pink and that + salt + slush sounds like a bad combination, these I would like to think would at least wear it better... they are customizable from Timberland's website for $180 (eep) but look warm and walkable. Anyone own Timberland boots of any design, who can comment on warmth of shoe?? I go to North Bay sometimes in the winter, where it's not unheard of to see 5-6 feet of snow!!

guys i had a mini-breakdown the other days when i realized i have ~three pairs of "nice" shoes that aren't falling apart bc they're cheap. and one of them is too big for me, as i realized when i was walking to the party i was going to. i felt slightly ridiculous about it; my sister kept very reasonably suggesting that we turn around so i could change my shoes and i was all dramatically like, "I HAVE NO OTHER SHOES!" and for some reason i was almost in tears? v. embarrassing.

I'd have to go with "Ebony Vintage" as it will look better in an interview. Having said that, I'm no authority, as the only shoes I own are a pair of black M&S lace-ups that pinch, it's like wearing a couple of crabs.

Current pair are some discreet-but-rugged Timberland shoes, that I can't find a picture of. Very tough, with the consistency of a boot but the shape of a sturdy shoe. Precisely the sort of thing I'd recommend.

I suppose it comes down to the shape of your feet. For me, the centre seam on those "cajun treks" would be irritating. Unfortunately neither is an option in IT, where you're scrabbling around all day in a comms cupboard but still expected to wear shoes that look like they belong to a minor member of the royal family...

Justine I tried on those Clarks recently and they're lovely. I had a certificate for a free pair of Clark's shoes and ended up going with different ones but those are ace.

Those triple-button Clarks boots are the cutest things ever, for real. I have so many nice boots but I'm not yet convinced it ever gets close to being cool enough here in Tucson to wear such things here. Maybe a few weeks in January, we'll see.

i used to wear the hell out of them when i was a kid, and i haven't seen them even though boat shoes are obvs here to stay

My loafers came today, which is YAY because I thought it would be another WEEK.

However the BOOOOOOOO is that they're CRAZY narrow. Serious. This is supposed to be "M", and M(edium) is the only width Bass makes for women, and they are TINY. I have extra room in the toes, but even with bare feet my insteps are wedged under steel bands in these things.

No seriously I think I figured it out: they're not horribly narrow in the soles, but the vamps are cut assuming you have very flat arches. Like, there's no VERTICAL room in the band where the pennies go. It has no arch.

I'm stretching them at my desk with a large cone-shaped spool of thread and a staple remover jammed under it.

scored a pair of allen edmonds captoe oxfords yesterday for $7! in great condition except for a small gouge in the leather which i hope is repairable, but even if not, awesome thrift score. cordovan color but i don't think they are actually proper cordovan

How much do you have to kind of subvert your own style to the tastes of snooty residents at this point in your medical career? (Like, it's just a given that even the hippiest of hippie lawyers have to own and wear a plain suit w/ sensible shoes sometimes, regardless of our style/preferences, so I don't know if that's how it works for doctors, too.)

Jealous! If I tried to wear them I'd be a) over 6 feet tall and b) crippled in approx 5 mins.

Well I'm short. But also the heels on them aren't all that high once you subtract the basic platform? Plus the leather is really soft and conform-y and you're well strapped in so there's no wobbling or things coming off or cutting in. All of which makes them surprisingly great.

Probably not! I have a pair of black Via Spigas in that range but hardly ever wear them. These shoes and the other pair of more formal platforms I bought this wkend were inspired by walking around Soho with Rrrobyn and looking at all the fashiony girls wearing improbable shoes.

Aww! I can't remember the name of the others, will find out tonight. Basically both pair are more contemporary/run the danger of being trashier than I would normally hazard. But I was in the mood, I guess.

The thing with the warm tan ones above is that they're close to skin color, so they blend in as more of a neutral. The same shoe in black would cut my ankles up visually and probably make me seem even stubbier.

Depends on the shoes. If they are not something I'm going to be able to wear regularly (anything with much of a heel, anything pointy, anything I can't put a custom orthotic in), then I don't want to spend much since I'll probably end up selling them on Ebay or giving them away. :/

Probably not any statement jewelry. Maybe a pin, depends on the buttons. Most likely scenario will be silver hoop earrings.

Re: price, don't worry about that too much. My normal shoe buying criteria are extremely practical, and I tend to shell out $$$ for a pair of shoes that I wear almost exclusively for a year or two, so I don't really know how to buy shoes for occasions. I'm mostly looking for style and color ideas, and then I'll take that information and use it to buy something that is orthopedically and financially appropriate.
